Greece:Wage cuts without competitive gains

GR-Thierry-Tressel-IMF%20story

Senior economist Thierry Tressel is one of the co-authors of the IMF report on Greece and other deficit countries.

International Monetary Fund research highlights troika’s failed policies in Greece.

According to an analysis produced by IMF (International Monetary Fund) researchers, drastic wage cuts in Greece have failed to improve competitiveness and contributed to a fall in productivity as domestic demand collapsed.

The conclusion is presented in the released Staff Discussion Note titled ‘Adjustment in Euro Area Deficit Countries: Progress, Challenges and Policies’ produced by Thierry Tressel, Shengzu Wang, Joong Shik Kang, and Jay Shambaugh. This analysis, though, does not necessarily represent the official views of the IMF itself.

The document makes it clear that the adjustment approach demanded in particular by European institutions for Greece has largely failed so far, achieving little other than soaring unemployment and a collapse in domestic demand.

According to the authors, the main ‘deficit economies’, namely Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Greece, have seen their current account deficits narrow (the balance of exports to imports). However, and particularly in the case of Greece, this is largely due to a fall in imports due to a collapse in domestic demand rather than an improvement in exports. Indeed, the Greek manufacturing sector remains smaller than before the crisis.

As the paper puts it, “a large share of the decline in current account deficits is related to slumping activity. Thus, progress with respect to reducing external imbalances and rebuilding competitiveness has been associated with large internal imbalances, notably very high unemployment”.

In Greece unit labour costs have dropped thanks to large wage cuts. However, the huge slump in output means that productivity has actually fallen despite widespread job losses.

Furthermore, the analysts conclude that the reduction in labour cost has not led to a significant improvement in competitiveness for Greece’s exports despite the many bold predictions that the opposite would occur. This is in part due to weaker demand in surplus eurozone countries.

Overall the report makes depressing reading, concluding that high levels of unemployment are likely to remain in struggling periphery countries for a very long time. The authors stress that moving forward structural reforms would be more beneficial than further wage cuts.

The report also goes on to state that: “Further monetary easing can also play an important role in supporting demand and facilitating internal rebalancing, by boosting demand everywhere, especially in the surplus economies with healthier financial systems, and supporting relative price adjustments, which are easier to obtain with inflation rates close to 2 per cent than at the lower levels that are forecast to prevail over the short to medium term.”

Finally, the IMF analysts recommend initiatives to increase lending to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), completing the process of creating a banking union, and greater fiscal union.

Bvlgari returns to its Greek roots

bulgari

The shop that started it all: Sotirio Bulgari’s Old Curiosity Shop in Rome’s Via Sistina.

The jeweller is showcasing a new MVSA Collection of fine jewellery that is inspired by the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne.

It was in Rome in 1884 that the Greek silversmith Sotirios Bulgari (Voulgaris) opened a single jewellery store, S. Bulgari Old Curiosity Shop in Via Sistina.

Over a century later, now amongst the most luxurious Italian goods designers, Bulgari hasn’t forgotten its Greek heritage, with its latest MVSA Collection of fine jewellery drawing on its Greek roots for inspiration.

Comprised of 26 one-of-a-kind pieces, including rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings, the line is inspired by the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne who, according to ancient Greek legend, became the muses of all art forms.

Nine of the pieces, each representing one of the nine Muses – Calliope, Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia and Urania – bring together emeralds, amethysts, tourmalines, rubies, spinels and diamonds from all over the world in eye-catching designs destined for the red carpet.

Bulgari chose former French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy for the specific ad campaign that features the high jewellery with a backdrop of Rome where the brand was founded 130 years ago by a Greek immigrant.

The name of the collection MVSA is a play on Bulgari’s use of the Roman V instead of the U and is pronounced ‘moo-sa’, the Greek word for muse.

Athens deporting far more immigrants

A shortage of space at migrant detention centres is forcing Greece to deport more and more illegal immigrants.

A shortage of space at migrant detention facilities near Athens has prompted Greek authorities to intensify deportations.

According to Greek Police data, the Attica Aliens Bureau deported 332 undocumented migrants in June compared to 185 during the same month last year, an increase of 79 per cent.

In July the number of deportations fell to 248, still a 41 per cent increase over 2013 when authorities removed 175 people.

“We are trying to raise the rate of deportations… mainly because holding centres in Attica have reached their capacity limit,” a police source that wished to remain anonymous told Kathimerini.

About 2,500 migrants are currently held at detention facilities in Amygdaleza, Elliniko, Maroussi and the Aliens Bureau headquarters on Petrou Ralli Street in Athens. An estimated 500 are in confinement across Attica’s police centres.

Officials say that the spike was a result of accelerating the repatriation process for migrants from North African states such as Libya, Egypt and Algeria.

However, most of the people being sent back were forced to return to Albania, Pakistan, Algeria, Egypt and Georgia.

In addition, a total of 434 migrants left in July via a voluntary program conducted with the help of the local branch of the International Organization for Migration. About 8,500 migrants are expected to return to their home countries using the scheme.

Greek Community backs paid grandparent child care

nicki%2001

Nicki Zougoulos with grandaughter Janna.

The Greek Australian community is all for giving grandparents payment for child care if they are qualified

Payment for grandparents that look after their grandchildren has the community and the government happy.

Paid child care could be branched out to nannies and grandparents if the government agree with the recommendations by the Productivity Commission tasked with overhauling the nation’s child care system.

The commission believes subsidising the payment of nannies and grandparents will be a great way to keep child care waiting lists short and give parents more options in the care of their children without feeling like they are burdening their family members.

The catch is that grandparents must have at least a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education to be eligible for the subsidy and be open to random checks by the national auditor.

The recommendations are still in their draft stages and the government won’t be considering them until October, but Greek Australians are heralding the initiative.

In a poll on Neos Kosmos’ website, 64 per cent of readers agreed qualified grandparents should be paid by the government to provide child care.

For many, grandparents have been a lifeline in giving their children safe and meaningful care while keeping costs down.

Grandmother Nicki Zougoulos says the incentive is a good idea, if the payment is up to par with current wages or acts like an add on to the pension.

“It’s a good idea for grandparents to be getting an income, but simply, it shouldn’t interfere with their pension,” she tells Neos Kosmos.

“It’s because when you look after your grandchildren, there are some costs.”

“It’s the heating, petrol when you take the children out in the car, buying them something like an ice-cream or lollies, they all add up.”

Mrs Zougoulos cares for her two grandchildren, Janna, 1, and Theodore, 2, three times a week, while working part time.

In between visits, her grandson Theodore also goes to child care. Mrs Zougoulos says giving Theodore the chance to have both forms of care is very important.

“Grandparents will be able to offer their grandchildren what they know. For instance, in our culture, they will be able to teach them about their religion, sing them traditional songs or teach them another language,” she says.

“But at child care they are able to play with other children and become more sociable, it’s the other side.”

For many grandparents, their care is sometimes the only option for working parents.

Many parents struggle with huge day care waiting lists and find costs are so high that one income is primarily used to supplement the day care bills.

On average, one day of day care costs families $74 dollars. The commission found that just over 100,000 additional full-time places will be needed by 2026, meaning as day care centres fill up, more grandparents will be asked to pitch in.

Nearly two thirds of the children aged 0 to 12 who usually attended some type of informal care were cared for by grandparents.

The paid grandparent child care scheme will also mean that older people will no longer have to choose between continuing to work or spend time with their grandchildren.

It will also give valuable work for older Australians who struggle to find paid work after the age of 60.

Having to be qualified is another issue that might have Greek Australian grandparents left out of receiving the subsidy.

Obtaining the Certificate III required might be a barrier for those with low English literacy.

Deputy director and manager of family and community services at the Australian Greek Welfare Society, Tina Douvos, says Greek grandparents might hit a roadblock with getting certified.

“If we look at the first generation Greek community, many of them don’t have formal qualification or schooling, particularly in the English language,” Ms Douvos tells Neos Kosmos.

“It might be a difficult concept to consider.”

But for the Greek community, even if the initiative doesn’t get government backing, grandparents will still be playing a major role in the lives of their grandchildren.

“In the Greek community, it’s an important part of raising a family,” Ms Douvos says.

Currently for parents, the government offers two benefits to help with child care costs.

One is the childcare benefit, a means-tested payment for low-to-middle income families, and the other is the childcare rebate, a non-means tested payment that covers up to 50 per cent of out-of-pocket costs.

psaltis

Γιατί είπατε «ναι» στη συγκεκριμένη πρόταση;

Είναι δυνατόν να βιώνεις την ανεργία και να το ξεχνάς;

Αν ήταν πολιτικός στο κοινό τι θα του λέγατε;

Αισθάνεστε παρεξηγημένος;

Δεν είναι καλτ όμως η ατάκα «Κούλα, πολύ κωλόπαιδο ο Κυριάκος» με την οποία έχει ταυτισθεί η κινηματογραφική σας παρουσία;

Τις τελευταίες δύο δεκαετίες εμφανίζεστε κυρίως σε επιθεωρήσεις, αλλά σπάνια σε τηλεοπτικές σειρές. Ο λόγος;

Australia:Monster croc snacks on surprised shark

croc 2

This large bull shark might have thought it was safe to go back in the water. But he didn’t count on Brutus, Adelaide River’s most famous and fearsome resident, who showed the shark who was the true king of the waterway.

The 5.5-metre croc has become an international sensation, one of the Top End’s biggest tourist drawcards and a frequent star of the NT News.

croc 01

Brutus, who is thought to be more than 80 years old, is also known for his missing front leg. The story goes that the limb was lost in a shark attack.

croc 3

Yesterday, in front of about 25 passengers on the regular 11am cruise, Brutus took his revenge. The moment was captured by Sydneysider Andrew Paice, who is travelling around Australia with his wife Nikki Beaumont and their daughter Madison, 6.

“We’d fed Brutus on the bank earlier and were coming back past and we saw something in his mouth,” Mr Paice said.

croc 04

“The shark was still alive. Brutus took the shark back into the water and then started to shake it around a bit.

“He then went back into the mangroves like he was protecting his prey

croc 5.”

The family was delighted just to see the jumping crocs on the cruise, but had no idea that sharks were also lurking in the river.

Cruise operator Morgan Bowman said he’d occasionally spot a shark fin in the water.

“But we don’t see many,” he said.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen one of our crocs catch a shark. It was amazing.

“It just shows for an old croc, Brutus is pretty quick.”

Brutus has graced the front page of the NT News several times during his reign as the undisputed king of the Adelaide River.

Mr Bowman didn’t think the elderly reptile could top some of those classic stories.

“We’ve got all these other crocs, nothing ever seems to happen to them,” he said.

“He’s definitely got a bit of a reputation.”

Cruise passengers had reported seeing the shark, about 1.5 metres long, in the river in recent days.

CROC GOBBLES SHARK

But it didn’t last long. Brutus, who usually feasts on buffalo meat, quickly added some fish to his diet.

The cruise, on Fogg Dam Road, takes place on a section of the river about 80km inland.

Rivers in the Territory are home to several species of shark, which travel hundreds of kilometres inland. The bull shark is the most common and is a voracious predator that can grow to over three metres in length.

Mr Paice said his family had been travelling for four months, but the spectacle on the Adelaide River was a highlight.

is

Panathinaikos knocked out of the Champion’s League 2015

imagesCVN2R39V

French side Lille moved to within a step of this season’s Champions League group stage despite being held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Grasshoppers of Switzerland on Tuesday in the third qualifying round.

Lille held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Zurich and stretched their lead on 19 minutes at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy as Florent Balmont fired in a spectacular 25-yard strike.

Grasshoppers midfielder Amir Abrashi responded with a fine long-range effort of his own just past the half-hour to give the visitors hope before Kahraba volleyed against the base of the post as the Swiss side mounted a spirited challenge.

However, any hopes of a remarkable turnaround were effectively extinguised when Daniel Pavlovic was dismissed with 20 minutes left for a poor challenge on Sebastien Corchia as Lille ultimately advanced 3-1 on aggregate.

Elsewhere Belgian side Standard Liege knocked out Panathinaikos after a 2-1 win in Greece against the 1971 European Cup finalists.

BATE Borisov of Belarus and Slovenians Maribor also moved through to the play-off round, for which the draw will be made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Friday.
