Socceroos coach admits his regret for not taking Josh Brilliante to the World Cup.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he may have erred in leaving out former Newcastle Jets defender-midfielder Josh Brilliante from Australia’s World Cup squad in Brazil.

Brilliante signed on for Italian Serie A side Fiorentina during the offseason, and Athens-born Postecoglou admitted dropping him from the 30-man squad was one of the toughest decisions of his life.

“Josh was extremely unlucky to miss the World Cup squad,” Postecoglou said exclusively on FFA TV. “Probably in retrospect I might have even erred in not taking him.”

Postecoglou said he was impressed with the form the 21-year-old is showing for his new club, and it is expected that Brilliante will be settled into a Socceroos squad which will take part in the AFC Asian Cup, when it features on home soil in January.

“It’s great. He’s hit the ground running [at Fiorentina] at a big club in a tier-one competition in Serie A,” Postecoglou said.

“He’s made a breakthrough which is fantastic. And we’ll certainly move that along by giving him some international exposure … importantly it’s great for us.”
Brilliante has been named in a 20-man squad set to play Belgium and Saudi Arabia in Europe next month.

Kyrgios defeats 21st seed to progress in US Open

kyrgios%20US%20open

Tennis young gun Nick Kyrgios has defeated world number 21 Mikhail Youzhny to make it into the second round of the US Open.

Teenage tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios came within a rant of US Open disqualification in a stormy first round win over Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny.

Kyrgios, the man who famously sent Rafael Nadal careering out of Wimbledon this year, picked up three code violations in his gruelling 7-5 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-1) over the 21st seeded Youzhny, a semi-finalist in 2006 and 2010.

When he collected his third early in the fourth set after a series of rowdy outbursts, he was just another warning away from being kicked out.

He smashed a ball out of the stadium in frustration in the second set, then dropped the F-bomb before the chair umpire issued a game penalty for another audible obscenity.

“I guess it was just heat of the moment,” said world No 60 Kyrgios, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon.

“I was frustrated the way I was playing, and, yeah, it was just all that sort of stuff. It was just an outburst, and hopefully I will be able to control that the next time I play.”

Kyrgios fired 26 aces and 68 winners against Youzhny and next meets experienced Italian Andreas Seppi.

He said his outbursts on court are all part of having high expectations. “I have been an emotional player most of my career. Maybe I will be able to manage it in the future. It’s a work in progress. It’s something that’s always been there.”

Youzhny had beaten Nadal and fellow former Open champions and world No 1s Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt in past visits to Flushing Meadows and only two weeks ago stopped the extraordinary giant-killing run of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Cincinnati.

But the world No 23 had no answer to Kyrgios’s awesome firepower as the Australian crunched 26 aces and 68 winners in the four-set demolition job on Show Court 17.

Apart from overcoming Youzhny’s class and vast experience, Kyrgios defied searing heat, a nagging left arm injury and three code violations to join fellow Australians Matt Ebden and Anastastia Rodionova in the second round.

Ebden beat German Tobias Kamke 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-2), while Rodionova surprised rising Italian Camila Giorgi 1-6 7-5 6-3 on a superb three-from-three opening day for Australia.

But 19-year-old Kyrgios stole much of the attention with his antics but had to seek treatment in both the first and third sets to have the forearm that supports his two-handed backhand vigorously rubbed.

But somehow he still managed to prevail against one of the most seasoned players on tour.

Kyrgios took the opening set after claiming the only service break in the 11th game.

After nervously coughing up his first two double-faults of the match when serving for it at 6-5 and 40-love, Kyrgios steadied to close out the set with an unreturnable serve.

Australia’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist unleashed a stinging backhand return to break Youzhny in the first game of the second set and had two further chances points to seize a double break at 3-1.

The let-off could have been costly as the Russian reeled off three straight games to lead 5-4, only for Kyrgios to calmly recover from 15-30 down to level at 5-5.

Kyrgios took control of the tiebreaker, opening up a 5-1 advantage before pocketing the set for a two-sets-to-love lead with a massive ace followed by another unreturnable delivery.

The youngster lapsed to drop serve twice as Youzhny grabbed the third set and then appeared poised to push the match to a deciding fifth set.

But after digging in to save set points serving at 4-5 in a marathon 10th game, Kyrgios broke the Russian for a third time with a clean backhand winner down the line.

Showing maturity beyond his years, Kyrgios raced through the fourth-set tiebreaker 7-1 to clinch victory after three hours and three minutes.

While Youzhny is no Nadal, the 32-year-old entered the match with credentials and form.

His recent success over Tsonga came the week after the Frenchman had taken down Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov and Roger Federer in consecutive matches to win the Toronto Masters.

Kyrgios’ impressive victory also came a year after Youzhny denied his Davis Cup teammate a place in the quarter-finals with a dogged five-set comeback win over Hewitt.

Palmer chews his own words…over the Chinese

images0F4ELHMG

THE Palmer United Party has released Clive Palmer’s letter of apology to the Chinese ambassador over his extraordinary remarks about Chinese “mongrels” and “bastards” on ABC’s Q&A program.

The PUP leader says he has realised his televised outburst was “an insult to Chinese people everywhere” and that Australia and China “must work towards a prosperous future by working together”.

Politicians and business leaders from both countries condemned Mr Palmer’s comments last week after he lashed out at Chinese “bastards” and “mongrels”, saying “they’re communist, they shoot their own people, they haven’t got a justice system and they want to take over this country”.

Mr Palmer later tried to clarify that his remarks were directed at a “Chinese company which is taking Australian resources and not paying” rather than Chinese people.

“I most sincerely apologise for any insult to Chinese people caused by any of the language I used during my appearance on the ABC television program Q&A,” he says in his letter to Ma Zhaoxu.

“I regret any hurt or anguish such comments may have caused any party and I look forward to greater understanding for peace and cooperation in the future.

“We must always have an open mind; an open mind allows us to put ourselves in the other person’s position and brings greater understanding and less conflict to the world. An open mind at least helps me understand why people think the way they do and how we can avoid traps for better understanding.

“In keeping an open mind, I now come to the realisation that what I said on Q&A was an insult to Chinese people everywhere and I wish to assure them they have my most genuine and sincere apology, that I am sorry that I said the things I said on the program.”

Mr Palmer reflects on the “long involvement” he’s had with China since first visiting it in 1962 and says it is “in the interest of the whole world” that Australia and China have a good relationship.

Treasurer Joe Hockey welcomed news of Mr Palmer’s letter but said it should have been sent immediately after the outburst.

Dozens of protesters also took to the lawns of Parliament House following the apology, waving Australian and Chinese flags.

They held signs that read “Clive Palmer must step down” and chanted “Palmer must resign”.

In a statement released by the Chinese Embassy, Mr Zhaoxu said “the Chinese people are never to be insulted”.

“Any remarks attacking or slandering China would not gain support and were doomed to failure,” he said. “The healthy and stable development of China-Australia relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, and cannot be overturned by any individual.”

ABC host surprised by Greek resilience

barry casidy

Barrie Cassidy returns to Greece and discovers a people high in morale despite economic woes.

Barrie Cassidy served as an ABC Europe correspondent before taking up his hosting position with the broadcaster’s prime Sunday morning political current affairs program Insiders in 2001. During his time in Europe he had been to Greece on official business, reporting on the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and the state of the booming Greek economy at the time.

“The longest period that I had there I went there for more than a week to do preview stories on the Athens Olympics. I wasn’t there for the Olympics itself but I went there to do previews and did a couple of stories on the economy as it was then.”

Cassidy recently returned from his first trip back to Greece since his time as a correspondent, and told Neos Kosmos that he was anticipating a much bleaker environment, on the back of the economic hardship faced by the country.

“I expected it to be more rundown than it was. I thought that the morale would be lower than it actually is. I did get a sense that despite everything they’re [the Greeks] still getting on with it.”

The Insiders host spoke of Athens as a city still coming to grips with the country’s reformed economic landscape and was surprised by the populace’s resilience, in the wake of controversial social issues that Greeks are contending with.

“It was interesting that the large scale demonstrations that I saw in the streets while I was there were not aimed at their own personal situations or the state of the economy. They were demonstrations against drug traffickers and how they had taken over certain parts of the city, and large squares and shopping centres were the designated areas for these traffickers.

“There was one demonstration where about 25-30,000 people had surrounded this whole area where we were and it was all aimed at that.”

“So they may have their problems economically, and their standard of living is falling, but there’s still a lot of them who are focused on these really important social issues as well.”

New era for Melbourne Greek Community

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria celebrates its 117th anniversary with the official launching of its new building.

When, 117 years ago yesterday, 57 Greeks of Melbourne decided to establish the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV), they could never have imagined that their initiative would lead to the creation of the largest Hellenic diaspora organisation in Australia. An organisation that next month will be officially launching its new 15-storey building in the heart of Melbourne.

The new building will house the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, which aims to become the largest of its kind in the Hellenic diaspora worldwide.

The building was completed on time and already most of its space has been rented.

One of its floors, housing the National Bank of Greece and law firms, is already in operation.

“We still have space available for rent and anyone interested can contact us,” said the president of the Community, Bill Papastergiadis, to Neos Kosmos.

Mr Papastergiadis is excited that the Community was able to complete the building on time and within budget.

“It was built in 16 months and costed us approximately 13.8 million dollars,” he said , stating that an amount of approximately $5 million is now in need, if the organisation is to pay off all of its expenses for the building.

“We will make every possible effort to collect as much money as we can,” he said, adding that the Greek Cultural Centre is here to meet the needs not only of the Victorian Greek Community but of the entire Hellenic population of Australia.

According to Australian diplomat and author Hugh Gilchrist, the first confirmed presence of Greeks in Australia can be traced back in August 1829, with the arrival of seven sailors from the island of Hydra, who were originally convicted to death for piracy. Later on, after the mediation of the newly independent Greece, their conviction turned to life imprisonment and exile to Australia.

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria was formed on August 22, 1897.

Golden Dawn members coming to Australia

imagesT3L2TBEO

European Parliament MPs Eleftherios Synadinos and Georgios Epitideios will be in Australia in October to ‘raise funds and increase awareness among Greek Australians’

Two Golden Dawn MPs are set to visit Australia in October to address events in Melbourne and Sydney.

According to the far-right political party’s local spokesperson, Ignatius Gavrilidis, European Parliament MPs Eleftherios Synadinos and Georgios Epitideios are coming to Australia ‘to raise funds and increase awareness among Greek Australians’.

According to Mr Gavrilidis, the party has between 60 and 70 “activists” and claims that thousands of “supporters” exist in Australia, a figure he says he has determined from social media use.

He says many of the supporters do not want to be publically identified.

In his interview with the ABC, Mr Gavrilidis denied Golden Dawn was a neo-Nazi party, but acknowledged that some of its members admired Adolf Hitler.

“Yes, they have admired the leadership of Hitler, just like we also admire the leadership of many strong leaders across the world. Vladimir Putin is a very strong leader. He’s got integrity. Benjamin Netanyahu is a very strong leader,” he said.

Former Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, Nicholas Kotsiras says the party has minimal support in the Greek Community.

“I am embarrassed by the existence of Golden Dawn. Golden Dawn does not represent me, it does not represent my family and does not represent the vast majority of Greeks living in Victoria,” Mr Kotsiras said to the ABC.

Late last year the party’s leaders and other MPs were arrested in Greece and charged with being members of a criminal organisation.

Many are still awaiting trial.

If the MPs are to be allowed in Australia, they will first have to pass a character test by boarder control that assesses risk if people have a criminal record.

My beautiful cafe: the Greek tradition that united a town

THE Cafe De Luxe in Brewarrina was one of the last of its kind.

Not so long ago, there were Greek-Australian cafes in every other country town in NSW and southern Queensland. They were an institution, too, in the main streets of the cities. The term “cafe” can be misleading: these had more in common with US diners than coffee shops of today, or the fish-and-chip shops of the 1980s.

On Sunday night the Cafe De Luxe — built in 1926 and run by my uncle Angelo — was razed. The Pippos house adjoining the business was also destroyed. Angelo Pippos said yesterday: “I’m devastated … This is the only home I’ve ever known.”

539570-92f73578-2c33-11e4-9d26-27a42f8e0df0

My grandparents Thalia and George, migrants from the island of Ithaka, owned cafes in Mungindi, Goondiwindi, Dirranbandi and Brewarrina in western NSW. By the late 1970s, only the Cafe De Luxe in Brewarrina was left in the family, and the cafe institution at large was an endangered species.

The Greek-Australian cafes have mostly disappeared because they were never meant to last. The cafes were designed to produce middle-class children, like me. The destruction of the Cafe De Luxe is an unseemly end to this tradition.

The beautiful art-deco interiors, the scales for lollies, the silverware, the saloon doors, the soda fountains, the booths, the jukeboxes, the quirky signs (“Our Motto: cleanliness and civility”) — it’s sad to see these institutions destroyed, first by time, now by fire.

Some historians suggest the Greek-Australian cafe was a “Trojan horse” on the main streets of early and mid-20th century Australia, bringing American food culture to town. There may be something in this, but the mixture of British, American and Mediterranean influences made for a very pointed Australian institution, especially in the bush where cafes were often the only places open seven days a week, 7am until late.

In Brewarrina, the De Luxe was the heart of an often-troubled town. It was a place where everyone — Anglo, indigenous, European, Asian — sat down together for a meal. Customers will remember what the old cafes didn’t offer: there was no Greek food. The mixed grill and T-bone steak were preferred, and everything came served on oversized, oval plates. For dessert, you ordered a sundae.

But at the De Luxe, for Sunday lunch, the extended family pushed tables together and my grandmother would serve the food she loved as a girl in Greece: meatballs in egg and lemon sauce, stuffed tomatoes, fish in currants and vinegar, all the salads — the dishes packed like wedges on the table.

One final memory: at the back of the De Luxe there was an enormous olive tree, about 6m high, which somehow had thrived in the outback soil. As a boy I spent hours in that tree, and if you climbed to the top you could see across the main street of Brewarrina, over the houses, down to the river, where the town returned to the bush.

The olive tree, now dead, is almost too obvious a symbol for the Greek-Australian cafe institution: these businesses nurtured something new in our towns, they thrived, they had their time, and now they are almost all gone.

Μanchester City sink Liverpool 3-1

original

Stevan Jovetic scored twice as Manchester City issued a statement of intent with a 3-1 Barclays Premier League victory over Liverpool on Monday.

The defending champions had to withstand some pressure from the side they beat to the title last season, but underlined their clinical touch in front of goal.

Jovetic opened his account for the season in the closing minutes of the first half with a close-range finish and doubled his tally to cap a flowing City move before the hour.

Sergio Aguero’s first act after replacing the injured Edin Dzeko in the second half was to strike a third goal for the hosts as he slid a low shot out of Simon Mignolet’s reach.

Pablo Zabaleta’s late own goal, which came after Joe Hart had parried substitute Rickie Lambert’s close-range header, was scant consolation for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

With new signing Mario Balotelli watching on after completing his move from Milan, Liverpool gave a debut to Alberto Moreno, while Joe Allen returned for Lucas in midfield.

Zabaleta’s recall for City enabled Gael Clichy to revert to left-back and the 29-year-old was at the heart of the hosts’ good early play.

Dzeko and Yaya Toure both had sights of goal in the opening 15 minutes thanks to Clichy crosses, but neither was able to stretch Mignolet.

Liverpool’s midfield began to dominate possession following a cagey start and Daniel Sturridge finally tested Hart in the33rd minute.

Steven Gerrard executed a perfect pass to find the striker at the back post but, having escaped the attentions of Vincent Kompany, his fierce left-foot shot was pushed away.

Hart’s efforts proved crucial for City as they went on to open the scoring through Jovetic with four minutes of the half remaining.

As Moreno dallied on a knockdown from Dejan Lovren inside the Liverpool penalty area, the 24-year-old nipped in and lashed the ball through the legs of Mignolet.

Rodgers’ side had the ball in the net four minutes after the break but the linesman’s flag denied Sturridge, much to the relief of Kompany who had misjudged a Glen Johnson cross.

To rub salt into the Liverpool wounds City promptly doubled their lead as Jovetic completed a neat one-two with Samir Nasri with a calm finish.

The striker’s flick ran perfectly into the Frenchman’s stride, and Nasri returned the ball to his unmarked team-mate to apply the finish.

The introduction of debutant Lazar Markovic breathed some life back into Liverpool, but a ruthless City outfit extended their lead even further in the 69th minute as Jovetic turned provider.

His pass released Aguero in behind the Liverpool defence and the Argentine confidently fired low into the back of the net, just 23 seconds after replacing Dzeko.

Liverpool, who have now only won once in their last nine visits to City, pulled one back with seven minutes to play as Zabaleta nudged the ball into his own goal.

Sturridge showed good strength on the right and delivered a perfect cross to Lambert, whose header was saved by Hart before the loose ball struck the defender on the knee and dropped over the line.

There was further bad news for Liverpool as Johnson hobbled off after all three substitutions had been made, while Moreno appeared to turn his ankle in injury time but carried on.
