Liverpool 2-0 AC Milan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HYr_rxb2l4

Brendan Rodgers will come face to face with the man he rejected at Liverpool, after his side progressed smoothly to the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup.

The Reds boss’ first act even before he had assumed full control at Anfield, was to block the proposed appointment of Louis van Gaal as the Director of Football, as the club’s American owners tried to implement a European model of management.

In talks before he accepted the job two years ago, Rodgers made clear that he would only accept the offer to become manager if he made the decisions at the club…and that scuppered any chance of the Dutchman arriving on Merseyside.

Now boss of Manchester United, Holland’s World Cup manager had said told Reds owners Tom Werner and John Henry he was interested in the role…as he was in becoming manager.

Now he will get an early chance to remind Rodgers of his role in blocking the move, when the two teams meet in what promises to be a spicy showdown in Miami.

The English clubs will meet in the final in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after United made short work of Real Madrid to top their group, and Liverpool then did likewise in overcoming an under-prepared and obviously disinterested Milan.

If this tournament has had set the pulses racing of the surprisingly large American crowds who have flocked to the games with great enthusiasm – and great knowledge too – then the final will be a very different affair, especially with the likely tension between the two rival managers.

Liverpool have seemed laid back about the competition, using it to fine tune fitness and reintroduce international players after the World Cup, while van Gaal has already shown his contempt for such lengthy foreign trips in pre-season, by insisting he won’t allow United to do it again.

That though, was before he knew they were playing the rivals from the other end of the East Lancs Road.

For Rodgers, it is a chance to set down a marker for the season, and he showed he meant business here, by rotating his entire side on the hour mark, but bringing on a full complement of 10 substitutes, to ensure freshness for two days’ time.

By then though, Liverpool had done enough to suggest they can hit the ground running this season, with Raheem Sterling again showing he has taken huge strides over the past year, by terrorising a shaky looking Milan defence.

The England star tormented the Italians with his pace and strength, and was only stopped by some dubious foul tactics…but not before he had created the opening goal for an impressive Joe Allen.

The little Welsh midfielder had burst through the centre after stealing possession from Michael Essien, to fire a shot against the post, and when the lively Sterling’s follow up was blocked, Allen seized on the rebound to volley home in style.

It was no more than a confident, in control Liverpool deserved, and they should have doubled the lead when Rickie Lambert was given the chance to open his Reds account from the penalty spot after Sterling was pulled back in the box by Adil Rami.

The England striker had a 100 per penalty record at Southampton, converting all 34 of his kicks.

It was sod’s law then, that under little pressure in a meaningless friendly with his side already qualified for the final, he saw his effort saved by Christian Abbiati in the Milan goal.

He will no doubt console himself that at least his record of never having missed has been quietly removed from dangling heavily around his neck, but the big forward must still have to wait for his opening goal in the shirt he cherishes.

Not that Rodgers was too bothered. One fine Simon Mignolet save aside, when he spread himself brilliantly at the feet of Mbaye Niang, Liverpool were barely troubled by a poor looking AC side, and they ensured victory in the closing minutes with a fine goal.

It was created by the dancing feet of Philippe Coutinho, who produced a brilliant first touch to send in Suso, and the finish was equally assured, a first time left foot shot from outside the box that had Abbiati floundering.

And so to Miami, where the talk of fitness being importance not results will stop dead in its tracks, and a more serious intent will enter the equation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JZYw0Wnu0o

U.S. Congress approves $225M for Israel’s defenses

obama

The U.S. Congress approved a $225 million package to replenish Israel’s missile defenses Friday, after the Jewish state’s cease-fire with Hamas unraveled and Israeli forces pushed deep into Gaza in search of a missing army officer.

The money is directed toward restocking Israel’s Iron Dome, which has been credited with shooting down dozens of incoming rockets fired by Palestinian militants over 3½ weeks of war. The bill now goes to President Obama, who is expected to sign the bill swiftly into law.

The Israel Defense Forces suspects 2nd Lt. Hadar Goldin, 23, was kidnapped and dragged into a Hamas tunnel during a battle that killed two Israeli soldiers. The abduction risks a major escalation in the nearly 4-week-old conflict, considering the extraordinary lengths Israel has gone to get back captured soldiers.

At a White House news conference earlier Friday, Obama reiterated his support for Israel’s right to self-defense while urging greater protection for Palestinian civilians. He called for the immediate release of the soldier believed to be captured by Hamas and said it would be hard to put together another cease-fire after a 72-hour humanitarian truce collapsed almost immediately after going into effect Friday morning.

He also cited Iron Dome as a concrete way the U.S. is helping “make sure that Israel is able to protect its citizens.”

At least 140 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed Friday. Fighting near the border with Egypt continued into the night, with residents reporting airstrikes and heavy tank and artillery shelling. The Israeli military said it was searching for the missing soldier and sent automated calls or text messages to residents to stay indoors.

Three years ago, Israel released more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for a captured soldier.

In 2006, the capture of 19-year-old soldier Gilad Shalit during a raid near the Gaza border started an intense, five-year campaign to win his freedom that gripped the nation.

During his five years in captivity, Israelis commemorated each of his birthdays and the anniversaries of his capture with mass demonstrations. His image was plastered on posters and TV screens across the country. Israel called in negotiators from Egypt and even former U.S. president Jimmy Carter for help.

In 2009, the Israeli government released 20 Palestinian women prisoners just for video proof that Shalit was alive and well. His release in 2011 was finally secured after Israel released 1,027 prisoners.

Within hours of his capture Friday, Goldin’s family pleaded for the same kind of efforts to win back their son.

“We urge our soldiers to leave no stone unturned in your search for our son,” Simcha Goldin, Hadar’s father, said outside his home in Kfar Saba, a suburb of Tel Aviv.

A longtime friend of Hadar Goldin’s told the Associated Press he is engaged to get married and that he studied at a religious Jewish seminary in the West Bank settlement of Eli. Goldin has a twin brother who is also in the military on the Gaza front-lines, said the friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he did not have the family’s permission to discuss Goldin’s personal details with the media.

Goldin’s apparent abduction is kindling concerns about how many prisoners Israel has handed over to secure the release of so few hostages, especially after many in the USAquestioned whether the government gave up too much when it released five Taliban prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay to win the release of captured Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that, unlike Americans, most Israelis are required to serve in the military.

“There’s not a separate class of Israelis who serve in the army. They see the army as the pre-eminent national institution because so many have served in it,” he said. “Therefore, when a soldier is kidnapped, it is not an abstract idea. It’s a very personal event.”

Alterman cautioned that the practice of hostage-for-prisoner swaps has led to Israel stockpiling prisoners in anticipation of the next soldier being captured, creating a constant incentive for Hamas or other groups to capture more hostages.

“That’s the dangerous dynamic, because it leads both sides into a place they don’t want to be,” he said. “It’s undesirable on both sides, but it seems unavoidable on both sides.”

The Iron Dome defense system has emerged as a game-changer in the current round of violence with Israeli officials citing a success rate as high as 90%. It uses radar, advanced tracking technology and anti-missile batteries to follow the trajectory of an incoming rocket or mortar and determine if it is headed for a major population center.

Created by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Iron Dome has enjoyed strong U.S. technological and financial support. Throughout its history, the U.S. has provided more than $700 million to help Israel cover costs for batteries, interceptors, production costs and maintenance, the Congressional Research Service said. The total now appears set to climb above $1 billion.

Tony Abbott’s paid parental leave scheme deferred with no due date in sight

abbott

Legislation for Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s prized $5.5 billion paid parental leave scheme has been quietly shelved and is unlikely to be put to Parliament this year, sources have revealed.

The move is aimed at quelling backbench dissent on the issue and is also a recognition it may be voted down by rebel government senators if put to the test.

Treasurer Joe Hockey said in June that PPL legislation would be introduced ‘‘soon’’ and described as ‘‘absurd’’ suggestions the policy had been stalled due to internal unrest.

But a government source said the scheme had been placed in the “too-hard basket” because the Coalition was fighting on too many fronts and struggling to get its basic budget measures passed by the Senate.

Illustration: Matt Golding.Illustration: Matt Golding.

Several other sources said a message had been discreetly sent to Mr Abbott that his pet policy could face an embarrassing defeat in the Senate.

Coalition senator Ian Macdonald had been an outspoken critic of the policy and welcomed the delay.

“I’m pleased that Mr Abbott has listened to the overwhelming majority of Australians in deferring the scheme until the country can afford it,” he said.

Nationals senator John Williams had previously said the scheme should only be introduced when the economy was performing strongly, when there was a “four” in front of economic growth and the unemployment rate.

“Affordability remains the issue and also the problems in the childcare industry need to be addressed,” he said.

Crossbench senators Bob Day and Nick Xenophon urged Mr Hockey to scrap the scheme during budget negotiations in Adelaide last week.

When challenged, Mr Abbott refused to back down on the scheme, saying he did not break his promises and his critics would be the first to attack him for going back on his word if he heeded their calls.

But Senator Day said the “world had changed” since Mr Abbott surprised his party room with the policy in 2010 and “the electorate would not see it as a broken promise”.

“What you never have, you never miss,” Senator Day said.

The Greens were the only crossbenchers supporting Mr Abbott’s scheme but said there had been no negotiations since earlier this year when they demanded the government spelt out the details of how the scheme would work and insisted it be funded entirely by business.

“We’re just waiting to see if it’s still a policy they want to pursue,” Greens MP Adam Bandt said.

Mr Abbott’s “signature policy” would award new mothers their full pay for six months, capped at $50,000, after the birth of their child. It would be partly funded by a 1.5 per cent levy on big companies.

One source said the idea was friendless within cabinet, the exception being Mr Abbott. Business also opposed the scheme. Last week outgoing NAB chief executive Cameron Clyne said it would cost the bank $100 million in extra taxes and would not improve workplace productivity. He also believed the money would be better spent on childcare.

If the paid parental leave bills establishing Mr Abbott’s scheme were passed early next year, it could be running in time for the planned start date of July 1.

Arsenal 5-1 Benfica: Yaya Sanogo scores four goals as Alexis Sanchez makes his Emirates bow

Arsenal-v-Benfica-2014

It was ruthless and it was devastating.

Quite simply, Arsenal demolished Benfica with a scintillating first half at The Emirates which featured a hat-trick from 21-year-old French striker Yaya Sanogo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVMcrV_Rn8k

And the France Under 21 foward went on to add a fourth to his personal tally early in the second half as the champions of Portugal were left reeling on a day when Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger opted to give debuts to three players.

They did not disappoint.

Calum Chambers – the £16 million signing from Southampton – was installed in central defence.

Hector Bellerin, a 19-year-old Spaniard, came in at right back while Costa Rican World Cup star Joel Campbell finally got the wear an Arsenal shirt. In the first team. All looked accomplished.

True, pre-season matches provide a notoriously unreliable barometer to the campaign ahead. But there is little doubt that Wenger has assembled a squad of huge potential and proven class.

The old maxim in football is that the strength of a club can be seen by who occupies the bench.

Arsenal had Wojciech Szczesny, Mathieu Debuchy, Jack Wilshere, Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, Santi Cazorla and £32 million man Alexis Sanchez on theirs. Mesut Ozil is still to come. Enough said.

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus was an immense irritant to the opposing manager on his last visit to North London when his men took Tottenham apart in the Europa League last season.

Tim Sherwood, then in charge at White Hart Lane, was less than impressed with Jesus’s antics and said so. Yesterday there was never going to be a repeat. His verbals were still there. Unfortunately, his team were not.

From the moment Aaron Ramsey left defender Sidnei bemused and baffled with a stunning turn to allow himself space to cross for Sanogo to score in the 27th minute it was over.

In five remarkable minutes, the match was beyond Benfica’s reach.

In the 40th minute, Bellerin crossed for Campbell to score. Three minutes later, Campbell supplied a close range chance for Sanogo and on the stroke of half-time, he completed his hat-trick.

True, Benfica had threatened early when Nico Gaitan hit the bar and then had a shot saved by Damian Martinez in the Arsenal goal.

But when that danger subsided, Benfica folded. Ramsey was imperious, Campbell lively and Sanogo a real eye for a goal.

Come the second half, and there was no respite for Benfica. Jesus even sat down in a resigned manner.

Cazorla came into the action but it was that man Ramsey again who was the menace. His shot from the edge of the area should really have been posed no problem for Moraes Artur in the Benfica goal.

But Artur was having one of those days when the phrase “hands like feet “ was appropriate.

He pushed the Welshman’s effort straight into the path of that man Sanogo who scored his fourth.

Benfica managed to reduce the arrears in the 62nd minute when Gaitan headed home but it was a mere consolation.

And the crowd were treated to a glimpse of what is to come from Sanchez in the last 18 minutes.

Strong, gifted and blessed with a supreme touch, the Chilean star will be a huge asset.

Just like the player who cost nothing in Yaya Sanogo.

Olympiakos 2-2 Manchester City (5-4 pens): Hart heroics not enough as Pellegrini’s men suffer shoot-out defeat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WQl0NGoTQw

The England goalkeeper saved two penalties following goals for Stevan Jovetic and Aleksandar Kolarov in normal time

Micah Richards blazed over the crossbar from the penalty spot as Manchester City’s US Tour ended with a shoot-out defeat to Olympiakos.

Joe Hart saved twice but Richards’ miss allowed Tasos Papazoglou to complete the victory following a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Stevan Jovetic gave City the lead after 35 minutes as the striker beat two Olympiakos defenders before curling an effort into the bottom corner, but the Greek side were level within two minutes as Dimitris Diomantakos found space in the box to beat Joe Hart.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side were back in front prior to half-time as Aleksandar Kolarov finished emphatically from the penalty spot following a foul on David Silva.

But Michel’s outfit were able to force a shootout as Diomantakos broke into the area to slide home an equaliser.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WQl0NGoTQw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LHH2d67Ej4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdsv6XOYfXU

Real Madrid vs. Manchester United

Bt3JporIYAEGzw_

Two of the world’s most popular football clubs will do battle on Saturday, as Real Madrid and Manchester United meet for their final match in the group stages of the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup.

Ann Arbor’s Michigan Stadium (also known as the Big House) will be the venue for this massive clash, and with 109,000 seats available for fans, Saturday’s fixture will truly be a special moment in football history in America.

The ICC may just be a friendly pre-season tournament, but with so much world-class talent gracing the pitch of one the largest sports stadiums in the world on Saturday, this fixture won’t have the feel of your traditional pre-season run out.

Neither club has been perfect during the 2014 ICC so far, but as the tournament is little more than a collection of pre-season friendlies, the managers can hardly be blamed for that.

The summer of 2014 was one of turnover for both clubs, and Louis van Gaal’s impact on the Red Devils has been very noticeable. The Dutchman wasted no time putting his stamp on the squad, and United already look much improved compared to last season, particularly on the defensive side.

Real Madrid have allowed their stars to return to the pitch at their own pace, and they won’t look at how the tournament has played out as a reason for panic. Los Blancos are the reigning Champions League winners, after all.

Real can no longer make the final of the tournament, while the Red Devils are in pole position for the win in Group A. A draw would do the trick, and with the Spanish side likely to keep their stars fresh for the upcoming Spanish Supercup, United will like their chances.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined his teammates in training this week but is yet to play a minute of meaningful action, and fans are understandably hoping he’ll make his return to the pitch against former club United, per the Daily Mail‘s Rajvir Rai.

The Supercup will be a priority for Los Blancos, however, and given Ronaldo’s struggles with injury during the latter stages of last season, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too much.

Van Gaal told the Red Devils’ official website he’s relishing the chance to prove what his team can do against the top clubs in world football:

“We played against AS Roma, who were second in the Italian league, then against Inter Milan, who were fifth in the Italian league  Now we play Real Madrid and it is nice to play against such teams, so you can show you are at least equal”.

Saturday’s match won’t be an easy one for either side, but the Mancunians should be the more motivated squad with an eye on the spot in the ICC final.

Los Blancos have no reason to chase a result against the Red Devils, apart from bragging rights, and while they’ll no doubt wish to give the 109,000 fans quite the show, their top players will be saved for the more important double-header against Atletico Madrid later this month.

Much will depend on the result of the earlier match between Inter and AS Roma, and if said result is beneficial for the Red Devils, the latter fixture could be little more than a showpiece for the fans in Michigan.
