Η κυβέρνηση Abbott μεθοδεύει παράλληλα και επιστροφή στην αποικιοκρατία.

Κοινωνική έκρηξη έχει προκαλέσει η επιδοκιμασία του ρατσισμού από το Γενικό Εισαγγελέα της Αυστραλίας, γερουσιαστή George Brandis, στην κοινοπολιτειακή Γερουσία και από τον πρωθυπουργό, Tony Abbott, στη Βουλή.

Απαντώντας σε παρατήρηση της ιθαγενούς συναδέλφου του, Νova Peris, ότι η αλλαγή του Άρθρου 18C του Νόμου περί Ρατσιστικών Διακρίσεων, που προωθεί η κυβέρνηση, θα ενθαρρύνει τις ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις, ο κ. Brandis νομιμοποίησε τη ρατσιστική συμπεριφορά με την εξωφρενική δήλωση, «people have the right to be bigots” («οι άνθρωποι έχουν δικαίωμα να είναι ρατσιστές»).

Το «δικαίωμα» των πολιτών να συμπεριφέρονται ρατσιστικά επιδοκίμασε και ο πρωθυπουργός, κατά τις απαντήσεις του στις καταιγιστικές επιθέσεις της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, ισχυριζόμενος, μάταια, σε κάθε απάντηση, ότι οι προτεινόμενες αλλαγές του Νόμου «προστατεύουν από τις ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις» ενώ «διασφαλίζουν το δικαίωμα ελεύθερης έκφρασης».

Μέλη της κυβέρνησης, η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση, τα άλλα πολιτικά κόμματα, οι ηγεσίες 150 και πλέον των μεταναστευτικών κοινοτήτων Αυστραλίας, μεταξύ των οποίων και η ελληνική παροικία, και οργανισμοί προστασίας ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, καταδίκασαν απερίφραστα τη δήλωση του Γενικού Εισαγγελέα και προειδοποίησαν για «ανένδοτο αγώνα» κατά της αποδυνάμωσης του Νόμου περί Φυλετικών Διακρίσεων.

Η νομιμοποίηση του ρατσισμού είναι, προφανώς, στοιχείο της αναχρονιστικής πολιτικής που προτίθεται να εφαρμόσει η κυβέρνηση Abbott, αιχμές της οποίας είναι ο διαχωρισμός των πολιτών σε αγγλοσάξονες και μη και η αναβίωση των αποικιοκρατικών σχέσεων της Αυστραλίας με «τη μητέρα» Αγγλία.
Σαράντα οκτώ ώρες μετά την κατάπτυστη δήλωση του Γενικού Εισαγγελέα, ο πρωθυπουργός, Tony Abbott, ανακοίνωσε την επαναφορά των βρετανικών τίτλων ευγενείας Knight (σερ) για Αυστραλούς ευπατρίδες και Dame για Αυστραλές, μέλη της κοινωνικής ελίτ, που προσφέρουν εξαιρετικές υπηρεσίες στη χώρα.

Η ανακοίνωση του πρωθυπουργού προκάλεσε σκωπτικά σχόλια της αντιπολίτευσης, χλευάστηκε από το κίνημα των ρεπουμπλικάνων και απορρίφθηκε ως «γελοία» από τη μερίδα του αυστραλιανού λαού, που διαφωνεί με οπισθοδρομικές αποφάσεις και ενέργειες που ενισχύσουν τη σχέση της Αυστραλίας με το παλάτι της Αγγλίας.
Η συντηρητική παράταξη είχε δεσμευτεί προεκλογικά να καταργήσει το Άρθρο 18C, βάσει του οποίου ο αρθογράφος του «Herald Sun», Andrew Bolt, καταδικάστηκε τo 2011 για «ρατσιστική επίθεση» σε Αυστραλούς ιθαγενείς. Με το διάτρητο επιχείρημα ότι το Άρθρο 18C στην παρούσα μορφή του «περιορίζει την ελευθερία έκφρασης» ο Γενικός Εισαγγελέας σχεδίασε αλλαγές, οι οποίες θα καταστήσουν τους μετανάστες μη αγγλοσαξωνικής καταγωγής –ιδιαίτερα τους μετανάστες από τη Μέση Ανατολή και την Ασία– εύκολους στόχους των ρατσιστών.

Στην εισαγωγή ανακοίνωσης – με τις προτεινόμενες αλλαγές του Νόμου περί Φυλετικών Διακρίσεων, ο Γενικός Εισαγγελέας σημειώνει ότι «οι αλλαγές που ενέκρινε η κοινοβουλευτική ομάδα του Συνασπισμού θα ενισχύσουν την προστασία του πολίτη από τον ρατσισμό, ενώ ακυρώνουν τις διατάξεις του Νόμου που περιορίζουν, παράλογα, την ελευθερία έκφρασης».

Ο σκιώδης Γενικός Εισαγγελέας, κ. Mark Dreyfus, σχολιάζει, ότι οι αλλαγές που προτείνει η κυβέρνηση αποδυναμώνουν το Νόμο, διότι αντικαθιστούν τις βασικές λέξεις «προσβάλλω, υβρίζω, ταπεινώνω» με λέξεις περιορισμένης σημασίας. Με απλά λόγια, οι αλλαγές που προτείνει η κυβέρνηση, αν περάσουν από το κοινοβούλιο, θα προστατεύουν τους ρατσιστές και θα αφήνουν ακάλυπτους τους πολίτες-στόχους.

Κατά της αλλαγής του Νόμου τάσσεται και ο πρόεδρος της συμβουλευτικής επιτροπής του πρωθυπουργού για θέματα ιθαγενών, Warren Mundine. O ιθαγενής ακτιβιστής χαρακτηρίζει «παράξενη» τη δήλωση του Γενικού Εισαγγελέα «οι άνθρωποι έχουν δικαίωμα να είναι ρατσιστές» και εκτιμά ότι οι αλλαγές που προτείνει η κυβέρνηση δεν πρόκειται να μετριάσουν ή να μειώσουν τις ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις που δέχονται καθημερινά ο ίδιος και άλλοι συμπολίτες. «Έχουμε μακρά ιστορία ρατσισμού και ρατσιστικών επιθέσεων και ρατσιστικής μεταχείρισης ανθρώπων {…} βρίσκω αστείο το γεγονός, ότι δεν επιτρέπεται να υβρίζουμε σε δημόσιους χώρους, αλλά επιτρέπονται οι ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις. Σας διαβεβαιώνω, ότι οι ύβρεις δεν σκότωσαν κανένα, όμως οι ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις σκότωσαν πολλούς».
Τη δήλωση του κ. Brandis καταδίκασε και η ομογενής γερουσιαστής, Τζένη Μικάκου.

Η ομογενής σκιώδης υπουργός δηλώνει υπερήφανη διότι συμμετείχε στις Εργατικές κυβερνήσεις της Βικτωρίας που θέσπισαν Νόμους κατά ρατσιστικών υποθέσεων και σημειώνει, ανήσυχη: «Τα σχόλα των κ. Abbott και Brandis, ατόμων που καταλαμβάνουν ανώτατα πολιτικά αξιώματα, δεν ενισχύουν τις προσπάθειες διατήρησης της κοινωνικής συνοχής μας. Σε τελευταία ανάλυση, η προστασία των δικαιωμάτων των πολιτών διαφορετικής καταγωγής δημιουργεί το συμπαγές κοινωνικό και κοινωνικό θεμέλιο της Βικτωρίας».

Τέλος, το Ελληνικό Συμβούλιο Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας εκφράζει σοβαρές ανησυχίες για τις προτεινόμενες αλλαγές του Νόμου.
Σε δηλώσεις του στο «Νέο Κόσμο» ο αναπληρωτής συντονιστής του Συμβουλίου, Γεώργιος Βελλής, χαρακτηρίζει «απογοητευτικό» το σχέδιο των αλλαγών που έδωσε ο Γενικός Εισαγγελέας για δημόσια διαβούλευση.

«Τελευταία παρευρέθηκα, μαζί με αντιπροσώπους άλλων μεταναστευτικών κοινοτήτων, σε δύο ευρύτατες συναντήσεις με το Γενικό Εισαγγελέα κ. Brandis, και συμφωνήσαμε ότι δεν έχει αιτιολογηθεί επαρκώς από την κυβέρνηση η ανάγκη αλλαγής του Νόμου. Ο ρατσισμός είναι απαράδεκτος και επιζήμιος για μεμονωμένα άτομα και την κοινωνία μας. Οι ρατσιστικές ομιλίες, επιθέσεις και χαρακτηρισμοί πλήττουν την υπόληψη, τον αυτοσεβασμό και την ακεραιότητα ανθρώπων, επειδή είναι αυτοί που είναι. Ο προτεινόμενος Νόμος θα αυξήσει τα κρούσματα ρατσισμού και επιθέσεων και θα υποβαθμίσει τη σημασία των ρατσιστικών επιθέσεων».

Ο κ. Βελλής βεβαιώνει, ότι «το Ελληνικό Συμβούλιο θα συνεχίσει να καταγγέλλει τις προτεινόμενες αλλαγές και θα υποβάλει τις απόψεις του στον Γενικό Εισαγγελέα».

Για τρίτη χρονιά κοινός ο εορτασμός 25ης Μαρτίου στο Σίδνεϊ

Με ιδιαίτερη λαμπρότητα πραγματοποιήθηκε την περασμένη Κυριακή στο Σίδνεϊ ο εορτασμός της εθνικής μας επετείου της 25ης Μαρτίου, με τον πρωθυπουργό, Τόνι Άμποτ, να επισημαίνει στο μήνυμα που έστειλε ότι «η Ελλάδα είναι η πηγή των ιδεών οι οποίες έχουν αλλάξει τον κόσμο».
Από την πλευρά του, ο παριστάμενος πρωθυπουργός Ν.Ν.Ουαλίας, Barry O’Farrell, επεσήμανε ότι οι κυριακάτικες εκδηλώσεις αποτελούν μια καλή ευκαιρία για να καταδειχθεί η ευημερία της Αυστραλίας, που εν πολλοίς οφείλεται στις ελληνική και όλες τις μεταναστευτικές κοινότητες.

Ο γιορτασμός ήταν κοινός με διοργανωτές την Διακοινοτική Επιτροπή της Αρχιεπισκοπής και την Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητας Ν.Ν.Ουαλίας.
Το εορταστικό πρόγραμμα είχε ξεκινήσει το πρωί με Δοξολογία στον καθεδρικό ναό Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου στο Redfern.

Εκεί, εκατοντάδες μαθητές και μαθήτριες και πολλοί ομογενείς παρακολούθησαν την κατάθεση στεφάνων και την επιμνημόσυνη δέηση υπέρ των πεσόντων.
Στη συνέχεια πραγματοποιήθηκε η παρέλαση των μαθητών και των σωματείων, μέσα από κεντρικούς δρόμους της πόλης, με σημείο κατάληξης το Domain Park, πίσω από το πολιτειακό Κοινοβούλιο.

Εκεί, στον ειδικό χώρο και την εξέδρα που είχε στηθεί, έλαβε χώρα το επίσημο μέρος με τις ομιλίες και το καλλιτεχνικό πρόγραμμα από χορευτικά συγκροτήματα της παροικίας.

Στην προσλαλιά του ο αρχιεπίσκοπος κ. Στυλιανός, ευχαρίστησε τις αυστραλιανές Αρχές για την  ηθική και οικονομική βοήθεια που προσφέρουν σε ιδρύματα και εκδηλώσεις της παροικίας (Κολλέγια, Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ κ.ά.), αλλά επεσήμανε ότι «με αυτό δεν θέλουμε να φτιάξουμε ένα γκέτο για την ομογένεια. Αντιθέτως, δίνουμε την ευκαιρία να δώσουμε κι εμείς ό,τι πολυτιμότερο έχουμε φέρει σε αυτό τον κόσμο εις ανταπόδοσιν όσων αγαθών απολαμβάνουμε» είπε ο προκαθήμενος της Ελληνορθόδοξης Αρχιεπισκοπής.

Ο πρόεδρος της Κοινότητας, Χάρης Δανάλης, ευχαρίστησε τον κόσμο για την παρουσία του, αναγνώρισε ότι η διοργάνωση και συμμετοχή ενέχει έναν βαθμός ταλαιπωρίας, αλλά όπως τόνισε «είναι αναγκαίο στην Αυστραλία να διατηρήσουμε τη γλώσσα μας, τα ήθη και έθιμά μας, τη θρησκεία μας, και να θυμόμαστε αυτές τις μεγάλες θυσίες που έχει κάνει ο λαός μας στη διάρκεια των χρόνων για να διατηρήσει αυτά τα ιδανικά».

Ο γενικός πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στο Σίδνεϊ, Δρ. Σταύρος Κυρίμης, στάθηκε στον ενωτικό χαρακτήρα του εορτασμού, σημειώνοντας ότι «αυτό το μήνυμα ομόνοιας, είναι αυτή η κινητήρια δύναμη που θα μας κάνει τόσο ως παροικία, όσο και ως Ελλάδα να πάμε μπροστά».

Μεταξύ των παρισταμένων ήταν ο πρόξενος της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας στην Αυστραλία, Ανδρέας Χατζηθεμιστός, η γερουσιαστής και κοινοβουλευτική γραμματέας Κοινωνικών Υπηρεσιών, Concetta Fierravant-Wells, από την ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση, η σκιώδης υπουργός Υπηκοότητας και Πολυπολιτισμού, Michelle Roland, από την ομοσπονδιακή αντιπολίτευση, η υπαρχηγός του Εργατικού Κόμματος και σκιώδης υπουργός, Λίντα Μπέρνεϊ, από την αντιπολίτευση της Ν.Ν.Ουαλίας, άλλοι ομοσπονδιακοί και πολιτειακοί πολιτικοί, δήμαρχοι και δημοτικοί σύμβουλοι από Δήμους του Σίδνεϊ, ο πρόεδρος της Διακοινοτικής Επιτροπής, Παναγιώτης Θεοφίλου, ο πρόεδρος της Ομοσπονδίας Κυπριακών Κοινοτήτων Αυστραλίας και Νέας Ζηλανδίας, Μιχάλης Χριστοδούλου, και άλλοι παράγοντες από την παροικία και ευρύτερα

Political parties asked to respond to seniors’ manifesto.

Victoria’s political leaders have been given notice that pensioners expect answers to a raft of proposals put forward by the Fair Go for Pensioners Coalition (FGFP) – a lobby group determined to protect the state’s most vulnerable and marginalised communities.

The FGFP has put forward a detailed agenda for the state’s political parties to consider in the run up to elections in November, and will present a petition on Wednesday to State Parliament to back their claims.

The group is asking the parties to confirm their positions on five specific proposals: the reintroduction of concessions on vehicle registration; standardising seasonal utility concession rates – to recognise the importance of both heating and cooling for seniors’ welfare; an increase in concession rates for utilities and council fees generally; and free public transport for all concession card holders, at least in off-peak hours.

At the national level, the FGFP is calling on the federal government to increase social security income support over the next four years to 35 per cent of male total average earnings, and for the Newstart Allowance to be raised by $50 per week for single people.

FGFP – a broad coalition of community-based organisations and volunteers that formed in the late 1990s – has recently widened its campaigning to include single-parents and the unemployed.

To help pay for higher income support to the less well-off, the pensioners coalition has also appealed for tax loopholes to be sewn up, with the FGFP asking for tax superannuation concessions for high income earners (earning $100,000 or more a year) to be abolished.

Helping those on low-incomes increase their superannuation savings is another intervention the group would like to see the federal government adopt, by re-instating the low-income super contribution abolished last July. With deep concerns over seniors being forced to take out reverse mortgages in an effort to stay afloat, the FGFP is calling for regulations to be introduced to protect people from embarking on such a drastic course of action.

FGFP Victoria spokesman George Zangalis told Neos Kosmos:

“We’re trying to influence both the federal budget and the state budget, and with the state election later in the year, we’ve asked the leaders of all the main parties to meet with us to outline their policies and respond to our claims”.

“It’s hard for pensioners and it’s becoming even harder, with concession rates not keeping up with real costs,” said Mr Zangalis (83), who is a member of FGFP Victoria’s steering committee.

Speculation that means-testing formulas may be changed to make family homes qualify as an asset in the calculation of federal social security payments is a further concern, says Mr Zangalis.

“The federal government is about to descend upon social security payments, and they’re looking to pensioners and other retirees as a means of reducing further whatever inadequate services they provide. We’re extremely concerned.”

FGFP plan to hold a public rally outside the State Library of Victoria on May 21 to promote their ongoing campaign.

After a five year break applications are now open for the summer camping program of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad.

With the Hellenism of the diaspora being demographically almost half Greece’s population, the Secretariat General for Greeks Abroad, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have been cooperating closely for years to ensure that the Greek diaspora remains connected and the ties with the motherland strong.

For the first time after a five year long break due to the economic struggles of Greece, annual summer camps, for children of the Greek diaspora to get a first-hand experience of the country of their ancestry, will begin again this year. The camps are hosted in Malesina, Fthiotida and in Epanomi, outside of Thessaloniki.

The camping program has often been praised as one of the most successful programs run in the more than 30 year history of the Greek Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was thanks to these summer camps that tens of thousands of children of Greek ancestry from all over the globe have visited Greece, including numerous Greek Australians.

The General Consulate of Greece in Sydney has now invited teachers and parents of children of Greek origin from New South Wales, between 9-13 years old, to participate in 2014 summer camps.

A group of nine children from NSW will be selected, based on the criteria that one of the parents is of Greek origin, the applicant is 9-13 years old, and that parents are not employees of the Greek State abroad.

Alongside their application forms and other required documents, the applicants can also include a certificate that the child is attending Greek language lessons, a certificate by Greek Associations that the child participates in activities relevant to Greek culture or a reference for good or excellent grades in the Greek language.

Children who are close to the age of 13 will be prioritised, as they won’t have the chance to participate in the future.

Based on the expression of interest for the last summer camp, in 2008, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth have been allocated two positions each, while nine positions will be available for applicants in both Melbourne and Sydney.

This year, the participants from Australia will take part in the summer camp in Malesina. The expenses of the camping program are covered by the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad. The GCSA will also be responsible for the children’s transportation from the airport of Athens or Thessaloniki to the camps, while the flight costs to and from Greece will be covered by the parents.

The camps, specially designed for the needs of children of the Greek diaspora and featuring lessons of Greek language and history, excursions and visits to historical and archeological locations, will be held from 15 to 29 July 2014, in Epanomi, outside of Thessaloniki, and from 7 until 21 August 2014 in Malesina, Fthiotida.

The deadline for applications for the Epanomi summer camp is 11 April, and 15 April for Malesina summer camp.

The Education office in Sydney is only responsible for NSW applications. Information for any other state’s program can be requested from the Consulate of Greece in the respective state.

The family of a Queensland couple who were on board MH370 have spoken of their heartbreak.

New satellite images have revealed 122 objects in the southern Indian Ocean that could be debris from a Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, Malaysia’s acting transport minister has announced.

The latest images come as searchers step up efforts to find some trace of the flight which had 239 passengers and crew on board, including six Australians.

It is thought to have crashed on March 8 after flying thousands of miles off course.

“It must be emphasised that we cannot tell whether the potential objects are from MH370,” Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference.

“Nevertheless, this is another new lead that will help direct the search operation.”

The images were captured by France-based Airbus Defence and Space on Sunday and showed 122 potential objects in a 400-square-kilometre area of ocean, Mr Hishammuddin said.

The objects varied in size from one metre to 23 metres in length, he said.

Mr Hishammuddin said the new satellite images were passed on to Australian authorities in Perth on Tuesday.

A dozen aircraft from Australia, the United States, New Zealand, China, Japan and South Korea had been scouring the seas about 2,500km south-west of Perth in the hunt for wreckage on Wednesday, after bad weather the previous day forced the suspension of the search.

“The crash zone is as close to nowhere as it’s possible to be but it’s closer to Australia than anywhere else,” Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, before leading Federal Parliament in a moment’s silence.

“A considerable amount of debris has been sighted in the area where the flight was last recorded. Bad weather and inaccessibility has so far prevented any of it from being recovered. But we are confident that it will be.”

Queenslanders Robert and Catherine Lawton, Brisbane couple Rodney and Mary Burrows and Gu Naijun and Li Yuan from New South Wales are presumed to have been killed when the flight crashed.

New Zealander Paul Weeks, who lived in Perth, was also on the flight.

Focus turns to recovering flight recorder

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak this week confirmed flight MH370, which vanished while flying to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

Citing satellite-data analysis by British company Inmarsat, he said there was no doubt the Boeing 777 came down in one of the most remote places on Earth – an implicit admission that everyone on board had died.

Recovery of wreckage could unlock clues about why and how the plane had diverted so far off course in one of aviation’s most puzzling mysteries.

Theories range from a hijacking to sabotage or a possible suicide by one of the pilots, but investigators have not ruled out technical problems.

The US has sent equipment to Perth to help locate the so-called black box that recorded the flight’s data as well as the final two hours of chatter in the cockpit.

Time is running out to find the bright orange-coloured box, which emits a ping in water that can be picked up from a depth of just over four kilometres.

The batteries powering the underwater ping only last 30 days and are due to run out on April 7.

Australia, China and France have all released satellite images over the past week showing possible debris in the same general area as the latest sighting, but no confirmed wreckage has been located.

Meanwhile, aviation disaster compensation lawyers say Malaysia Airlines’ treatment of the families of passengers may increase the likelihood of legal action against the airline, which could reach many hundreds of millions of dollars.

Malaysia Airlines officials have defended the use of an SMS to break the news to passengers’ relatives that they had concluded the plane was lost at sea.

But angry families are demanding answers, with some marching on the Malaysian embassy in Beijing in protest on Tuesday.

Former Leeds and Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has announced he is to retire from professional football.

The Australian made over 250 Premier League appearances for the two English clubs from 1995 until 2008, but has most recently been playing for Melbourne Heart, who confirmed their captain would hang up his boots at the end of the A-League season.

‘On behalf of Harry Kewell, Melbourne Heart FC confirms the Socceroo legend will retire from professional football at the end of the current Hyundai A-League season,’ said a statement.

‘Kewell’s final appearance for Melbourne Heart FC will be against the Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park in the final round of the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 season on Saturday 12 April.’

However, the 35-year-old may be deprived of a swansong as he will miss the Heart’s next two matches against Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United after suffering an abdominal strain in the defeat to the Central Coast Mariners last Sunday.

Kewell returned to his homeland last year in an effort to win a place in Australia’s World Cup squad although he has missed over a third of his side’s matches this season due to injury, while the Heart’s position of second bottom in the table would not have aided his cause.

He can be certain of his place in history, however, having been named his country’s greatest ever footballer in a vote by players, fans and journalists alike in 2012.

Sydney-born Kewell played his part in two World Cup campaigns and was one of their best players as they achieved their best-ever result in 2006, however, he was cruelly forced to miss their loss to Italy in the last-16 due to a foot infection.

He came to the fore much earlier with Leeds and was awarded the PFA’s Young Player of the Year in the 1999-2000 season although he would leave the Yorkshire club in acrimonious circumstances for Premier League rivals Liverpool in 2003.
His time with the Merseysiders was blighted by injury and although he became the first Australian-born player to earn a Champions League winners’ medal in 2005, Kewell was substituted midway through the first half in the final against AC Milan due to an abductor complaint.

He lasted 48 minutes in the 2006 FA Cup final triumph over West Ham before again being withdrawn due to injury, while his time in England ended two years later when he moved to Galatasaray, with whom he spent three seasons.

Kewell then moved on to Melbourne Victory in 2011 and a short spell with Qatar club Al-Gharafa followed before he came back to Australia, this time for the Victory’s city rivals.

Melbourne Heart head coach John van ‘t Schip paid tribute to Kewell, saying: ‘Harry’s record as a footballer speaks for itself.

‘To achieve what he has done as a European player would have been amazing but to do it as an Australian player who needed to leave home as a teenager makes it a very unique and special story.’

Kewell himself said on Twitter: ‘On my way to officially announce my retirement.. Thank you for all the kind tweets you’ve sent so far.

Σύμφωνα με σφυγμομέτρηση που διεξήγε ο γνωστός οργανισμός Newspoll για λογαριασμό της εφημερίδας «The Australian», το περασμένο Σαββατοκύριακο, το στραβοπάτημα του συμπατριώτη μας γερουσιαστή και αναπληρωτή θησαυροφύλακα, Άθα Συνοδινού, δεν είχε τον αναμενόμενο αντίκτυπο στην κοινή γνώμη.
Παρά την ενασχόληση των Μέσων Ενημέρωσης για μια ολόκληρη βδομάδα και το θόρυβο που δημιουργήθηκε για τις δραστηριότητες του Συνοδινού, όταν ο τελευταίος ήταν μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου εταιρίας Australia Water Holdings -στην ιδιοκτησία της οποίας συμμετείχε και ο πρώην βουλευτής του Εργατικού κόμματος, Eddie Obeid, που κατηγορείται για διαφθορά-, η υποστήριξη των ψηφοφόρων στην κυβέρνηση Άμποτ κυμάνθηκε σχεδόν στα ίδια επίπεδα των τελευταίων εβδομάδων.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, ο κυβερνητικός Συνασπισμός συγκέντρωσε το 40% των ψήφων σε σχέση με το 41% που είχε συγκεντρώσει πριν ένα δεκαπενθήμερο, ενώ η δύναμη τους Εργατικού Κόμματος αυξήθηκε κατά μία ποσοστιαία μονάδα από το 35% σε 36%.

Την ίδια χρονική περίοδο η δύναμη των Πράσινων -που υπέστησαν συντριπτική ήττα στις πολιτειακές εκλογές της Τασμανίας πριν μα εβδομάδα-, μειώθηκε κατά δύο ποσοστιαίες μονάδες από το 13% στο 11%.

Μετά την καταμέτρηση και των σταυρών δεύτερης προτίμησης το Εργατικό Κόμμα συγκεντρώνει το 52% των ψήφων και ο Συνασπισμός το 48%, που σημαίνει ότι αν οι ομοσπονδιακές εκλογές είχαν γίνει το περασμένο Σάββατο η κυβέρνηση Άμποτ θα τις είχε χάσει.

Να σημειώσουμε εδώ κατά τρεις ποσοστιαίες μονάδες βελτιώθηκε και η απόδοση του αρχηγού της αντιπολίτευσης, Μπιλ Σόρτεν, φτάνοντας από 33%, που ήταν πριν ένα δεκαπενθήμερο, στο 36%.

Τέλος να προσθέσουμε ότι, στην ερώτηση ποιον θεωρείτε καταλληλότερο για τη θέση του πρωθυπουργού, ο Τόνι Άμποτ συγκέντρωσε 43% των ψήφων και ο αρχηγός της αντιπολίτευσης 36%.

Greece has experienced more deaths from flu than any other European country this year apart from Spain, whose population is more than four times larger, according to the latest figures measuring the virus’s impact.

Data collected by the European Center for Disease Prevention (ECDC), made public in Greece by the Athens Medical Association (ISA), showed that 155 people had died in Spain by Saturday after contracting flu, while the number of lives lost in Greece to the virus reached 106. Spain, however, has a population of some 46 million, whereas under 11 million live in Greece.

Flu deaths in Greece were considerably higher than in a range of European countries. For instance in France, which has a population six times larger than Greece’s, 52 people died from the virus. In Romania, which has twice as many citizens as Greece, just four people died. There were also only four deaths in Sweden, which has a comparable population to Greece. Britain reported no deaths from the virus.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) said on Monday that flu deaths in Greece had risen to 110 and that another 46 people were receiving hospital treatment. A total of 286 people have received treatment in intensive-care units since the flu season began. However, the number of people contracting the virus has been falling since March 3.

The virulent H1N1 strain and a poor vaccination rate have been blamed for the increase in the number of deaths from the virus compared to last year.

ISA’s president Giorgos Patoulis called for Greece to develop a national vaccination plan for the next flu season. SYRIZA said that the government’s spending cuts to primary healthcare had contributed to the virus’s more damaging impact this year.

The launch of the organisation takes place on March 26.

The Australian launch of The Hellenic Initiative (THE), a United States based global non-profit institution whose vision is to mobilise the global diaspora and the Philhellene community of the world to invest in the future of Greece, is to be launched in Sydney on Wednesday 26 March.

The Australian launch will be hosted, as revealed by Neos Kosmos earlier on this month, by journalist Helen Kapalos and will have as its featured speaker THI’s chairman, Mr Andrew N. Liveris AO, the Darwin born and Queensland educated Greek Australian who serves as chairman and CEO of The Dow Chemical Company.

THI was launched in 2012 in Athens and in New York, is headed by Andrew N. Liveris, and claims as its president and honorary patron the former President of the United States of America Bill Clinton. The board members of the organisation include, amongst others, John A. Catsimatidis, Arianna Huffington, James Chanos, Nicholas Lazares, Drake Behrakis and other prominent Greek American business people.

The Hellenic Initiative aims to provide immediate and vital support in ensuring the prosperity of established and new organisations, as well as to encourage ongoing education, entrepreneurism and investment that will provide a sustainable foundation for Greece’s future.

THI is also answering the call for crisis relief in Greece and offers targeted financial support to Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) that provide help to Greek families.

The SOS Children’s Villages, for abandoned and orphaned children, Apostoli, an organisation that distributes food to destitute families and Praksis, an NGO that operates a network of free health and dental clinics for low-income families, are some of the humanitarian projects supported in Greece.

Only last week, The Hellenic Initiative announced a $300.000 grant to the NGO Médecins du Monde-Greece (MdM) to provide critical childhood immunisations and free dental services for children and adults. MdM estimates that at least 3,500 children and 1,500 adults will receive dental treatments through this program. The vaccination program on the other hand will be centred in Athens, Perama, Thessaloniki, Chania and Patra and is expected to provide more than 7,000 vaccinations to nearly 3,900 children.

The Australian launch of The Hellenic Initiative in Sydney on Wednesday aims to achieve similar objectives by bringing together a select group of industry and community leaders of Greek heritage from around Australia.
