Προκαλεί μη αναστρέψιμη βλάβη στις αρτηρίες των παιδιών.

Η έκθεση των παιδιών στο παθητικό κάπνισμα προκαλεί μη αναστρέψιμη ζημιά στις αρτηρίες τους, γεγονός που αυξάνει τον κίνδυνο να πάθουν έμφραγμα ή εγκεφαλικό αργότερα στη ζωή τους, σύμφωνα με μια νέα μεγάλη αυστραλο-φινλανδική επιστημονική έρευνα.

Η μελέτη -η πρώτη που παρακολούθησε τις επιπτώσεις του παθητικού καπνίσματος από την παιδική ηλικία έως την ενηλικίωση- δείχνει ότι οι γονείς πρέπει να αποφεύγουν να καπνίζουν μπροστά στα παιδιά τους, π.χ. όταν κάθονται όλοι μαζί για να δουν τηλεόραση ή μέσα στο αυτοκίνητο. Όταν και οι δύο γονείς καπνίζουν κοντά στο παιδί τους, προσθέτουν κατά μέσο όρο 3,3 χρόνια στην ηλικία των αρτηριών του, οι οποίες έτσι είναι σαν να γερνάνε πρόωρα.

Οι ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής την επιδημιολόγο δρα Σίνα Γκολ του πανεπιστημίου της Τασμανίας, που έκαναν τη σχετική δημοσίευση στο ευρωπαϊκό καρδιολογικό περιοδικό “European Heart Journal”, σύμφωνα με το BBC και το πρακτορείο Ρόιτερ, μελέτησαν από το 1980 σχεδόν 3.800 παιδιά ηλικίας τριών έως 18 ετών, έως ότου όλα ενηλικιωθούν.

Οι ερευνητές κατέγραψαν μέσω ερωτηματολογίων τις συνήθειες των γονέων σε σχέση με το κάπνισμα και επίσης μέσω υπερήχων μέτρησαν το πάχος των αρτηριών των παιδιών κατά την ενηλικίωσή τους. Όπως διαπιστώθηκε, η βασική αρτηρία της καρωτίδας ήταν κατά μέσο όρο 0,015 χιλιοστά πιο παχιά σε όσους νέους είχαν κατά την παιδική και εφηβική ηλικία τους εκτεθεί στο παθητικό κάπνισμα και των δύο γονέων καπνιστών, σε σχέση με τις περιπτώσεις των νέων, των οποίων κανένας γονέας δεν κάπνιζε (τουλάχιστον στον ίδιο χώρο με το παιδί). Η αύξηση του πάχους των αρτηριών συνδέεται με μεγαλύτερο καρδιαγγειακό κίνδυνο για τους ενηλίκους.

«Η μελέτη μας δείχνει ότι η έκθεση στο παθητικό κάπνισμα κατά την παιδική ηλικία προκαλεί μια άμεση και μη αναστρέψιμη βλάβη στη δομή των αρτηριών. Οι γονείς και όσοι σκέφτονται να αποκτήσουν παιδί, θα πρέπει να κόψουν το κάπνισμα. Όχι μόνο θα κάνουν καλό στη δική τους υγεία, αλλά επίσης θα προστατέψουν την υγεία των παιδιών τους στο μέλλον», δήλωσε η δρ Γκολ.

Greece’s unemployment rate fell slightly in December, with 27.5 per cent of the workforce registered as being out of a job, according to the Hellenic Statistics Authority (Elstat).

The figures showed the total number of people employed in December at 3,555,034, the unemployed at 1,349,495 and the economically inactive at 3,388,927.

This means that the country’s unemployment figures have grown by almost one million in five years. In December 2008, as the international crisis was breaking, 434,149 people (8.9 per cent) were recorded as unemployed.

The data showed that the unemployment rate for women (31.6 per cent) is higher than that for men (24.5 per cent).

The region of Epirus-Western Macedonia had the highest unemployment rate (30.4 per cent), while the Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian Islands recorded the lowest rate(22.7 per cent)

In terms of age group, the largest proportion of unemployed was in the under-25 age group, where 55.5 per cent are registered as unemployed, down from 61.4 per cent in the previous month.

German President acknowledges only a “moral responsibility”

President Karolos Papoulias on Thursday raised two controversial issues with his visiting German counterpart Joachim Gauck – Greece’s ongoing demands for WWII reparations from Germany, as well as the return of a forced loan given by the Bank of Greece to the Nazis – but failed to elicit the desired response. Gauck, who met with Papoulias amid high security as protests were banned in the city center, said he was not in a position to differentiate his stance from the official position of the German government, which has repeatedly said there is no case for the reparations Greece is seeking. “I believe the legal course for it is closed,” Gauck said after Papoulias stated that Greece “has not relinquished its claims” relating to WWII reparations.

The German president acknowledged, however, that his country carried a “moral responsibility” for dozens of massacres carried out by Nazi soldiers during the war and offered to set up a special fund to boost German awareness of Nazi war crimes in Greece. Without providing details, Gauck said the fund would “dispense substantial sums to make Germans confront that part of their past.”

Earlier, at a lunch with Gauck, Papoulias is said to have pressed the Greek case for reparations, saying it was “a paradox” that Greeks are saddled with painful austerity measures and commitments while Germany refuses to discuss “responsibilities” arising from WWII. “Your position that ‘there is no issue’ is something that you claim. It cannot be unilaterally projected as a final conclusion,” Papoulias was quoted as saying.

The two heads of state travel to Ioannina yesterday, for a visit to the village of Ligiades, where Nazi forces executed 92 people in October 1943.

Gauck also met on Thursday with SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras and leftist MP and war hero Manolis Glezos, who both also pressed him on the reparations issue. Tsipras stressed that Germany should have a greater sense of responsibility as Europe’s leading economic power, noting that the austerity measures championed by Berlin in Greece and other Southern European countries have “splintered and divided Europe.”
