Ένα βήμα πιο κοντά στην αναγνώριση των γηγενών φυλών, βρίσκεται η κυβέρνηση στην Αυστραλία, αποφασίζοντας τη διεξαγωγή δημοψηφίσματος το 2017, με σκοπό την αλλαγή του Συντάγματος. Η πρώτη αλλαγή έγινε το 1967, προκειμένου να αρθούν οι διακρίσεις ενάντια στους Αβοριγίνες. Φαίνεται, όμως, ότι δεν επαρκεί και χρήζει αναθεώρησης, καθώς διατηρεί μια αποικιοκρατική λογική αποκλεισμού των ιθαγενών.

Μεταξύ άλλων, εν έτει 2015, υφίσταται άρθρο το οποίο δίνει τη δυνατότητα να απαγορευθεί το δικαίωμα ψήφου ή να εφαρμοστεί οποιοδήποτε άλλο ειδικό μέτρο επιθυμεί η κυβέρνηση σε μια ολόκληρη φυλή, εφόσον θεωρηθεί απαραίτητο. Με το δημοψήφισμα επιθυμείται να κατοχυρωθούν οι Αβοριγίνες ως ο «πρώτος πληθυσμός» της χώρας. Γεγονός για το οποίο μιλούν ελάχιστα οι Αυστραλοί πολιτικοί με ευρωπαϊκή καταγωγή και έχει χαρακτηριστεί από την πρώην πρωθυπουργό, Julia Gillard, ως η «μεγάλη αυστραλιανή σιωπή».

Η Gillard, το 2013, είχε προσπαθήσει να κάνει κάποιες αλλαγές και είχε αναφερθεί στο πόσο σημαντικό είναι το ζήτημα, λέγοντας ότι αποτελεί «μια ανοιχτή πληγή στην ιστορία του έθνους». Παλαιότερα, είχε προηγηθεί η δημόσια απολογία άλλου πρωθυπουργού της χώρας που ζήτησε συγγνώμη για τις βάναυσες πρακτικές των Ευρωπαίων απέναντι στους Αβοριγίνες.

Τον τελευταίο καιρό σε αυτό τον τομέα δραστηριοποιείται το κίνημα «Recognise», που αποσκοπεί στην ενημέρωση των πολιτών για τις αντιξοότητες που βιώνουν οι ιθαγενείς, καθώς και την ανάγκη να αναγνωριστούν ιστορικά, αφού η ιστορία του αυστραλιανού Κράτους ξεκινά από την εποχή που έφτασαν εκεί οι πρώτοι άποικοι και παραγκωνίζονται τα 50.000 χρόνια παρουσίας των πληθυσμών που ζούσαν ήδη εκεί.

ΑΟΡΑΤΟΙ ΚΑΙ ΠΕΡΙΘΩΡΙΟΠΟΙΗΜΕΝΟΙ

Οι Αβοριγίνες στη σύγχρονη Αυστραλία αποτελούν μόνο το 3% του συνολικού πληθυσμού, δηλαδή 470.000. Ζουν αόρατοι και περιθωριοποιημένοι από το κράτος, είτε σε πόλεις είτε σε μικρές και απομονωμένες κοινότητες. Όσον αφορά τη δημόσια υγεία, παρατηρείται ένα τεράστιο κενό ανάμεσα στις παροχές προς τον λευκό πληθυσμό και το γηγενή. Οι Αβοριγίνες έχουν χαμηλότερο προσδοκώμενο όριο ζωής και υψηλότερα ποσοστά παιδικής θνησιμότητας. Σε δυσμενέστερη θέση βρίσκονται και στα εργασιακά και στον τομέα της εκπαίδευσης. Επίσης, ενώ πλέον αποτελούν μόνο το 3%, οι έγκλειστοι σε φυλακές είναι δυσανάλογα πολλοί. Η παραβατική συμπεριφορά μεγάλου ποσοστού Αβοριγίνων σχετίζεται με το ρατσισμό που αντιμετωπίζουν (υπάρχουν ακόμη τέτοια κρούσματα) από το αστυνομικό σώμα, αλλά και λόγω των ανεπαρκών κοινωνικών παροχών του Κράτους, που δεν φροντίζει να ασχοληθεί με τη φτώχεια και τα προβλήματα που τους μαστίζουν.

Αποτέλεσμα αυτών είναι η καχυποψία και ο δισταγμός των Αβοριγίνων να εμπιστευτούν το Κράτος, αλλά και μια τάση να αυτονομηθούν. Μια ομάδα ατόμων, για παράδειγμα, έβγαλε δικά της διαβατήρια και ταυτότητες, στο όνομα ενός Κράτους που δεν υφίσταται νομικά, αλλά ανήκει στους αυτόχθονες, προβληματίζοντας τις Αρχές. Οι άνθρωποι αυτοί δεν θεωρούν ότι πρέπει να συμμορφωθούν με τις Αρχές του αυστραλιανού Κράτους, γιατί δεν αναγνωρίζονται από το Σύνταγμα της χώρας. Από την πλευρά τους, οι υπόλοιποι Αυστραλοί, με βάση πρόσφατη έρευνα πανεπιστημιακού ιδρύματος, συμφωνούν σε ποσοστό 82%, ότι είναι αναγκαία η αλλαγή του Συντάγματος και η απαλλαγή του από κάθε διάκριση που έχει παραμείνει έως τώρα. Επιπλέον, λιγότεροι από ένας στους πέντε Αυστραλούς πιστεύει ότι οι Αβοριγίνες είναι υπεύθυνοι για τα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν οι κοινότητές τους και οι μισοί από τους ερωτηθέντες θεωρούν ότι είναι αποτέλεσμα της κυβερνητικής πολιτικής.

Forty-five-year study documenting the experiences of Greek women launched.

The much-anticipated longitudinal study spanning over 45 years on the migration of young women from Greece to Australia, has been launched.

Black Night, White Day: Greece-Born Women in Australia, undertaken by Emeritus Professor Reginald Appleyard, Anna Amera and Dr John Yiannakis, documents the experiences of 78 women who migrated to Australia in the ’50s and ’60s to counter the gender imbalance of Greek migration.

Hosted at Western Australia’s Kastellorizian House on Sunday 1 November, the event was directed by Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis, with the study officially launched by Dr Ken Michael AC, who also penned the foreword.

“The authors are to be commended for this incredible piece of work, which is not only inspirational to read as an experience in itself, but also leaves the reader with a sense of emotion in sharing the individual and collective journeys of some determined and courageous Greece-born women in Australia in search of a better life,” writes Dr Michael.

This is not the first work published on Greek migrants to Australia by Professor Reginal Appleyard and Dr John Yiannakis, both of whom co-wrote Greek Pioneers in Western Australia, the first definitive history of Greek migrants in the region.

The launch attracted a number of esteemed guests, including the newly-elected Consul of Greece Antonios Koliadis, City of Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, Deputy Lord Mayor James Limnios and president of the Hellenic Community Gary Mitchell.

Junior surf champion Sam Morgan underwent surgery and is currently in an induced coma in a Gold Coast hospital, after being mauled by a shark off Ballina yesterday evening.

The 20-year-old was surfing at Lighthouse Beach between 6.15-6.30pm (AEDT), when the attack occurred. Morgan was bitten on the left thigh but was able to make it back to the beach, where he was assisted by several off-duty lifesavers.

Morgan was taken to Ballina District Hospital, and then airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he was operated on last night in an attemp to save his leg.

Witnesses from the beach reported seeing teeth marks in Morgan’s board. According to biologists, it is likely the attacker was a bull shark, between 2.8 and 3.1 metres in length.

Meanwhile, NSW north coast surfing clubs have criticised the State Government for not applying shark-deterrent technology. It is worth mentioning that there were three shark sightings in the area on Tuesday, and 11 other shark attacks so far this year along the same stretch of coast- two of which fatal.

Χωράφια, αγροκτήματα και εκατοντάδες μικροί οικισμοί διάσπαρτοι μέσα σε ένα πυκνό δάσος από σημύδες. Με την πρώτη ματιά, η πόλη Σκρούντα στην Κεντρική Λετονία κάθε άλλο παρά εντυπωσιακή είναι. Ελάχιστα ωστόσο χιλιόμετρα μακριά ορθώνονται οι μπρουταλιστικής αρχιτεκτονικής πολυκατοικίες της Σκρούντα-1, μιας εγκαταλελειμμένης μυστικής κωμόπολης της σοβιετικής εποχής.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του Ψυχρού Πολέμου οι Σοβιετικοί κατασκεύασαν περισσότερες από 40 κωμοπόλεις σε μυστικές τοποθεσίες για στρατιωτικούς κυρίως σκοπούς. Συνήθως έπαιρναν το όνομα της πόλης κοντά στην οποία ανεγείρονταν, το οποίο ακολουθούσε ένας κωδικός αριθμός. Αποτελούσαν τόπο κατοικίας εξειδικευμένου προσωπικού -κυρίως τεχνικών σε άκρως απόρρητες εργασίες- των σοβιετικών ενόπλων δυνάμεων.

Η πιο γνωστή από αυτές τις μυστικές σοβιετικές κωμοπόλεις είναι το Πριπιάτ στην Ουκρανία, το οποίο χτίστηκε για να στεγάσει τους εργαζομένους στον πυρηνικό σταθμό του Τσερνόμπιλ. Μετά το πυρηνικό ατύχημα που σημειώθηκε τον Απρίλιο του 1986, το Πριπιάτ εγκαταλείφθηκε άμεσα από τους κατοίκους του, ενώ σήμερα αποτελεί μια πόλη-φάντασμα, θλιβερό κατάλοιπο της σοβιετικής εποχής.
Η μισή στον στρατό, η άλλη μισή σε ιδιώτες

Δεν είχαν όμως όλες οι μυστικές κωμοπόλεις της πρώην Σοβιετικής Ένωσης την ίδια δραματική κατάληξη. Το παράδοξο όσον αφορά αυτούς τους ερειπωμένους πλέον στρατιωτικούς και βιομηχανικούς οικισμούς είναι το γεγονός ότι η ανοικοδόμησή τους είναι τόσο δαπανηρή όσο και η κατεδάφισή τους.

Σήμερα η κυβέρνηση της Λετονίας είναι έτοιμη να πάρει την κατάσταση στα χέρια της και να επαναφέρει τη ζωή στους δρόμους και στα κτίρια της Σκρούντα-1.

Τον Ιούλιο, μετά την εξαγορά της κωμόπολης αντί 12.000 ευρώ από μια ιδιωτική εταιρεία η οποία την είχε αγοράσει το 2010, οι Αρχές της Λετονίας ανακοίνωσαν πως σκοπεύουν να παραχωρήσουν τη μισή από την έκτασή της στις ένοπλες δυνάμεις της χώρας -πρόσφατα μάλιστα υπήρξαν αναφορές για εκπαίδευση νατοϊκών στρατευμάτων στην περιοχή- και την υπόλοιπη μισή, έναντι χαμηλού αντιτίμου, σε ιδιώτες με την προϋπόθεση ότι θα συμβάλουν στη δημιουργία θέσεων εργασίας και θα προβούν στην κατασκευή έργων υποδομής.
Το 1999 κλείδωσε το τελευταίο λουκέτο

Κάποια στιγμή, κατά τη σοβιετική περίοδο, στη Σκρούντα-1 κατοικούσαν 5.000 κάτοικοι οι οποίοι διέμεναν σε 10 πολυκατοικίες. Μεταξύ των οικοδομημάτων που εξακολουθούν να στέκουν όρθια στην πόλη περιλαμβάνονται ένα σουπερμάρκετ, ένα νηπιαγωγείο, ένα γυμναστήριο, ακόμη και ένα νάιτ κλαμπ. Η εγκατάσταση στη Σκούντρα-1 συστημάτων ραντάρ για τον έγκαιρο εντοπισμό πυρηνικών πυραύλων κατέστησε την πόλη κέντρο υψίστης σημασίας όσον αφορά την αμυντική στρατηγική της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης.

Ο τελευταίος κάτοικος της Σκρούντα-1 την εγκατέλειψε το 1999. Άφησε ωστόσο πίσω του όλα όσα συνέθεταν την καθημερινότητά του, απομεινάρια μιας προηγούμενης ζωής: κιτρινισμένες φωτογραφίες, παλιές εφημερίδες, ρούχα, παιχνίδια, τετράδια της σοβιετικής εποχής.

Η κατάρρευση της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης το 1991 σήμανε την αρχή του τέλους και για τις περισσότερες μυστικές πόλεις των Σοβιετικών. Αλλά οι Ρώσοι ενδιαφέρονταν ιδιαίτερα για τη Σκρούντα-1, με αποτέλεσμα να καταλήξουν σε συμφωνία για την περαιτέρω εκμετάλλευσή της, ακόμη και μετά την αποχώρηση των ρωσικών στρατευμάτων.

Η πόλη-βάση τελικά παρέμεινε υπό τον έλεγχο της Ρωσίας ώς το 1998, αλλά κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου η κυβέρνηση της Λετονίας, επιθυμώντας να βάλει ένα τέλος στις όποιες βλέψεις του Κρεμλίνου, προέβη στη συμβολική κατεδάφιση του πιο χαρακτηριστικού οικοδομήματος της Σκούντρα-1, του κτιρίου όπου στεγάζονταν τα συστήματα εντοπισμού πυρηνικών πυραύλων.

NK: Is this a real invitation Effie? Are you actually going through with this?

NK: Congratulations then! How are you feeling?
Effie: I’m high as a kite, couldn’t be happier. My day has arrived. Finally getting married.
NK: And you’re a virgin bride?
Effie: Some of us are traditional. There’s not many of us left. I’ll be one of the few that deserves to wear white on her own wedding day.
NK: That’s a huge statement!
Effie: It is. And I’m happy to make it. There’ve been so many women that stood there in white that- perhaps- shouldn’t have. You know what I’m sayin’?
NK: How did this all come about?
Effie: I was desperately seeking love for a long time and I’m a big fan of money. So I wanted this guy to be loaded, too. To have a lot of money with a bit of ‘dosh’. I didn’t want to settle for some ‘gyfto’, some ‘gero’ or anything. It’s OK to have a ‘gero’ for a pappou but not for a husband, you know? But, you know … things got a bit difficult.
There aren’t that many guys out there ‘se ilikia gamou’ who aren’t already snatched up.

NK: Who are you getting married to, Effie? Have you found that good Greek guy you were looking for?
Effie: I was going out with a lot of Greeks, but the problem with the Greeks is that when you go out with the Greek guy, you go out with the mother as well. It’s like his plus one. Everywhere that guy goes the mother isn’t that far away. I ended up with someone I actually went to school with. An Aussie. A skippy, a kangaroo.
NK: Were you two friends all along?
Effie: It was my first kiss. A million years ago. He never got over me and has been addicted since but we lost touch, being focused on business and all … We both went off and became legends. When I thought life had nothing else to offer, ‘kai pos tha meino sto rafi’ he came and found me. Swept me off my feet.
NK: How old are you, Effie?
Effie: It’s not appropriate to ask. I mean, you should know at your age! Ta kryvoun ta xronia oi ellinides, Nelly mou. Se genikes grammes eimai akomi 21.
NK: You do have a baby, though … to claim you’re still a virgin …
Effie: I did. But there was no wrongdoing there. It was an immaculate conception. Did not happen along traditional lines. It was a gift from god and came into this world with a caesarean. My most important asset is my baby but I also had to preserve my cherry. I was born with a rose and I’m not giving it away that easily. I’m Greek. Therefore hard to get.

NK: What have you prepared for the wedding day?
Effie: There’s gonna be a lot of audience/guest interaction. There will be some surprises with relatives and friends that will meet for the first time. There will be a lot of dancing, laughter … It will be a top glendi. There’s also a pre-sale so that the Very Important Peeps get access before the access. You know, the ones that are sorta ‘special’ in a way get to see it first.
NK: Who else will be invited?
Effie: You know what Greek weddings are like. The koinonia is invited. I’m very loyal to my fans. They’ve been worried on my behalf, wondering if this was ever going to happen, so I want them to be there with me, sharing the joy, the music, being part of the celebration.
NK: Will the baby attend the wedding?
Effie: Yes. The baby will attend. It comes with me to most places I go. I’m very active mothering my child but on the other hand I’m public property. It will be present and at that point it will be about four years old.
NK: Wow. They grow quickly these days don’t they?
Effie: They do. Like plants. You turn around and suddenly they’re sprung up. Like Tupperware. They go from one size to the other.
NK: Will your husband be performing on the night as well?
Effie: Well … he’d better be! I can’t give away more. I don’t want to give away the anticipation. I want that suspense. As you know, I’m not one of those people giving away things easily. Alas my cherry.
NK: Do you think your Greek friends and relatives will be upset if they see you get married to an Aussie bloke?
Effie: I’m sure a lot of them will be devastated, but on the other hand, I’ve always been open about my experience with Greek guys. I’ve gone into a lot of detail and hard times with their mothers. I even went out of my own comfort zone to make sure I explored all Greek men. I gave it a good go but sometimes, because they are so spoiled by their mothers, they think you’ll replace her.
I don’t want to be anyone’s slave and saying that I want you to know I’m not old-fashioned. I just want the same dikaiomata. My Aussie lets me be who I am. There’s mutual respect and he’s not trying to steal my limelight. Like it should be. I can’t wait until everyone is there with me. Make sure you come, too. I’ll leave some room on my dress for your hundred dollar bills. I might be marrying an Aussie but I’m going Greek all the way.

Eurozone finance ministers called on the Greek authorities to finalize the financial sector measures ahead of the release of EUR 2 billion of bailout funds.

On the finalization of both financial and legislative measures over the course of the coming week, the European Stability Mechanism would unlock funds.

Ministers took stock of the ongoing recapitalization exercise with Greek banks at the regular Eurogroup meeting on Monday.

Regarding the ongoing recapitalization exercise with Greek banks, Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem said a lot of work has been done and the size of the recapitalization is smaller than expected earlier.

“The next thing to do is to have all the financial sector measures in place before the completion of the recapitalization process,” he said.

The governance of the banks and household insolvency are the two key issues still to be resolved, Dijsselbloem said after the meeting in Brussels.
Around EUR 10 billion has already been put in a segregated account in the ESM, which is ready if needed and when needed for the recapitalization process, but of course the agreed conditions need to be met, he said.

ESM Managing Director Klaus Regling said Athens will likely require less than the originally estimated EUR 86 billion bailout.

Eurogroup mandated the EuroWorking Group that prepares the agenda for the meeting, to reconvene at the latest at the beginning of the next week to assess the status of Greece’s bailout.

Further, Dijsselbloem said the Eurozone recovery will continue despite some global economic issues.

Turkey has been curtailing freedom of expression and undermining the independence of its judiciary, the European Commission said Tuesday, in a highly critical report that could clash with efforts to win Ankara’s cooperation in handling migrant flows.

The report, part of an annual package on progress by countries aspiring to join the European Union, had initially been expected in October.

The commission has been accused of delaying its publication beyond the November 1 elections in Turkey, which delivered a victory to the party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The EU’s executive argued that it was waiting for the most suitable time.

Ankara has been seeking EU membership since 1987, but the negotiations have frequently ground to a halt – mostly because of Franco-German opposition and tensions with Cyprus. The EU has also often criticized Turkey for its questionable human rights record.

“Over the past year, significant shortcomings affected the independence of the judiciary, as well as freedom of assembly and freedoms of expression,” EU Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn said of Turkey, as he presented the report in the European Parliament.

“Reforms in these key areas are an indispensable priority in Turkey’s accession process – in Turkey’s own interest,” he added.

The commission report said that in 2015 “the pace of reforms slowed down” in the country, due in part to “protracted elections and the continued political divide.” The year also saw “an overall negative trend in the respect for rule of law and fundamental rights” in Turkey, it warned.

It also slammed the “increased pressure” on the media in conjunction with the November elections and limitations on the use of the internet.

Turkey passed new laws on the rule of law, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly that “ran against European standards,” the report charged.

It noted that “substantial efforts are needed to restore the independence of the judiciary,” which has been in decline since 2014, noting that “judges and prosecutors have been under strong political pressure.”

The report addressed Turkey’s security situation, after a two-year ceasefire between the state and the armed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) collapsed in July. Hundreds have died in the ensuing violence.

“The escalation of violence in the east and south-east since July gave rise to serious concerns over human rights violations,” the commission wrote.

The report described as “imperative” the resumption of peace talks between Ankara and the country’s Kurdish minority, and lamented Turkey’s “inadequate” track record in the fight against corruption.

The EU has nevertheless been controversially working to secure Turkey’s help in stemming the flow of refugees making their way to Europe. Many transit through Turkey. Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans is expected in the country on Tuesday for further talks.

The other EU membership hopefuls for which the commission issued progress reports are Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

Hahn in particular praised the progress made by Serbia, and expressed confidence that the first negotiating chapters in its EU membership talks could be opened this year. He also warned Macedonia that the start of its accession talks hinged on efforts to resolve an internal political crisis.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said that he does not expect any new countries to join the bloc before 2019.

Με αποστολή αστυνομικών ενισχύσεων έθεσαν οι αυστραλιανές αρχές υπό έλεγχο ταραχές σε αμφιλεγόμενο κέντρο μεταναστών στη Νήσο των Χριστουγέννων.

Τα επεισόδια, τα οποία είχε πυροδοτήσει θάνατος μετανάστη στο κέντρο, οδήγησαν στον τραυματισμό τουλάχιστον πέντε ατόμων και σε εκτεταμένες ζημιές.

Οι μετανάστες -κρατούμενοι στην ουσία- είχαν ανάψει φωτιές και είχαν αναγκάσει τους φρουρούς να αποχωρήσουν.

Σύμφωνα με τις αυστραλιανές αρχές, η επιχείρηση για να τεθεί υπό έλεγχο η κατάσταση ολοκληρώθηκε νωρίς την Τρίτη «σε γενικές γραμμές ειρηνικά».

Η αστυνομία ανέφερε ότι έκανε μεν χρήση βίας, όμως δεν επιβεβαίωσε αναφορές πως είχε χρησιμοποιήσει πλαστικές σφαίρες. Οι πέντε τραυματίες είναι τρόφιμοι του κέντρου και η ζωή τους δεν βρίσκεται σε κίνδυνο.

Το κέντρο στη Νήσο των Χριστουγέννων είναι ένα από τα πιο αμφιλεγόμενα μέτρα στην ευρύτερη σκληρή τακτική που ακολουθεί η Αυστραλία απέναντι στο μεταναστευτικό, ενώ ιδιαίτερα το ζήτημα του ασύλου έχει προκαλέσει έντονη συζήτηση.

Στο συγκεκριμένο κέντρο βρίσκονται τόσο μετανάστες που έχουν φτάσει χωρίς χαρτιά στην Αυστραλία όσο και υπήκοοι άλλων χωρών που αντιμετωπίζουν απέλαση έχοντας καταδικαστεί για παραβάσεις.

Οι ταραχές είχαν ξεκινήσει το βράδυ της Κυριακής, όταν βρέθηκε η σορός ενός ιρανού κούρδου, του Φαζέλ Τσεγκένι, σε γκρεμό. Ο Τσεγκένι είχε προηγούμενως προσπαθήσει να αποδράσει από το κέντρο.

Συμμετείχε στη συμμαχική δύναμη και πολέμησε στην Κρήτη

O λοχαγός Reg Saunders ήταν και παραμένει έως σήμερα ένας από τους πιο γνωστούς βετεράνους αβοριγινικής καταγωγής στην Αυστραλία. Η δράση του Saunders κατά τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο είναι στενά δεμένη με την Ελλάδα, καθώς όχι μόνο πολέμησε στην Κρήτη ως μέλος των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων, αλλά έζησε και την ελληνική φιλοξενία όταν μετά τον Ιούνιο του 1941 και την παράδοση των Συμμάχων στους Γερμανούς, αυτός και άλλοι συστρατιώτες του βρήκαν καταφύγιο στα σπίτια των Κρητικών. Για την ακρίβεια ο Saunders έμεινε στην Κρήτη για ένα περίπου χρόνο μετά την παράδοση των Συμμάχων έως ότου φυγαδεύτηκε με την βοήθεια των ντόπιων εκτός Ελλάδας.

Την Τετάρτη, 11 Νοεμβρίου, Ημέρα Μνήμης ή Ανακωχής (Remembrance Day) -όπως είναι γνωστή-, όπου εορτάζεται η επέτειος λήξης του Α’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, το Αυστραλιανό Πολεμικό Μνημείο (Australian War Memorial) τιμώντας τον θα εγκαινιάσει την γκαλερί του η οποία και θα φέρει το όνομά του. Η Κρητική Αδελφότητα Καμπέρας και Περιχώρων με την ευκαιρία της παρουσίας της κόρης του Glenda Humes, αλλά και άλλων συγγενών του λοχαγού Saunders, στην Καμπέρα, για τα εγκαίνια της γκαλερί, θα συμμετάσχει στην εκδήλωση των εγκαινίων ως ένδειξη σεβασμού και ευγνωμοσύνης της προσφοράς του λοχαγού στον τόπο καταγωγής των μελών της.

Ο κ. Γιώργος Καθεκλάκης, πρόεδρος της Κρητικής Αδελφότητας Καμπέρας και Περιχώρων, τόνισε ότι η συμμετοχή της ομογένειας στην εκδήλωση είναι κάτι παραπάνω από χρέος της καθώς τιμά μία σχέση που χτίστηκε μεταξύ του λοχαγού και του τόπου τους 75 χρόνια πριν.

Να αναφέρουμε, επίσης, ότι η κόρη του λοχαγού Saunders ήταν από τους βασικούς εμπνευστές ενώ έπαιξε και καθοριστικό ρόλο στην δημιουργία του μνημείου της «42ης Οδού» λίγο πιο έξω από τα Χανιά και είναι αφιερωμένο στην μνήμη των Αυστραλών και Νεοζηλανδών που πολέμησαν στην «Μάχη της Κρήτης».

WILLY SAGNOL believes Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola could leave the Bundesliga champions for Manchester City at the end of this season.

Guardiola’s contract with the German champions expires in June and the former Barcelona coach is yet to commit his future at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed he will open talks with the Spaniard during German football’s winter break, but Bordeaux coach Sagnol, who played for Bayern between 2000 and 2009, would not be surprised if Guardiola walks away from the club.

“Guardiola should leave Bayern if he feels that he has done everything he could,” Sagnol told Kicker.

“He should start a new project if that’s the case. Coaches always think about projects.

“I reckon Manchester City would be a bigger challenge for him than Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain. There is still plenty of work to do there. They have not won any major trophies yet.”

Guardiola has guided Bayern to consecutive Bundesliga titles since his appointment in 2013, while also winning the German Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
