Alternate Citizens’ Protection Minister Yiannis Panousis on Tuesday sought to play down a statement earlier in the day during which he said that a 27-year-old man accused of murdering, mutilating and boiling his 4-year-old daughter would likely die soon.
In comments to Real FM, Panousis said the 27-year-old Bulgarian would either take his own life or be lynched in prison. “Such a thing cannot be endured, even by the person who has done it,” he had said, adding that perpetrators of such crimes often commit suicide or fall victim to a violent death at the hands of others. “There is a certain code of honor in prisons,” he said. “And this is why I think… that we will soon have the death of the perpetrator.”
Commenting later in the day, Panousis described vehement criticism of his comments as “absurd and hypocritical, to say the least,” noting that his “assessment as an academic” had been misinterpreted. Panousis is a known criminologist and has lectured at the University of Athens for years.
The 27-year-old Bulgarian national charged with the murder of Ani Borisova was remanded in a prison on Corfu after testifying before an investigating magistrate in Athens. The man, who is said to be a drug addict, was to be confined to a cell alone to avoid reactions from other inmates, sources said. His wife, the girl’s 25-year-old mother, was remanded at Athens police headquarters and is to face a magistrate on Thursday.
