Υπό την απειλή της τρομοκρατίας, η χώρα ενισχύει τους ελέγχους στα σύνορα.

Αυστραλία εξετάζει το ενδεχόμενο να τροποποιήσει τη νομοθεσία της και να καταργήσει την διπλή υπηκοότητα για πολίτες της που υποψιάζεται ότι εμπλέκονται σε τρομοκρατικές πράξεις.

Όπως είναι γνωστό η Αυστραλία αναγνωρίζει τη διπλή υπηκοότητα. Για παράδειγμα, οι Έλληνες μπορούν να είναι συγχρόνως κάτοχοι ελληνικού και αυστραλιανού δολαρίου.

Σε μια προσπάθεια, όμως, η αυστραλιανή κυβέρνηση να ελέγξει τους εγχώριους τζιχαντιστές, σκέφτεται να τους αφαιρέσει την αυστραλιανή υπηκοότητα.

Αυτό θα είναι ένα από τα πολλά μέτρα που αναμένεται να ανακοινωθούν σύντομα.

Όπως ανακοίνωσε ο πρωθυπουργός, Τόνι Άμποτ, οι Αρχές θα ενισχύσουν τους ελέγχους στα σύνορα προκειμένου να αντιμετωπίσουν την τρομοκρατική απειλή.

O πρωθυπουργός έκανε τις δηλώσεις του λίγες ημέρες μετά την αποκάλυψη ότι αποτράπηκε άλλη μία τρομοκρατική επίθεση.

Δύο νεαροί άνδρες που φέρεται να προετοίμαζαν επιθέσεις στο όνομα της οργάνωσης Ισλαμικό Κράτος συνελήφθησαν την 10η Φεβρουαρίου και έχουν προφυλακιστεί. Και οι δύο είχαν φθάσει στην χώρα τα τελευταία χρόνια. Πρόκειται για τους Ομάρ αλ Κουτομπί, 24 ετών, από το Ιράκ και Μοχάμεντ Κιάντ, 25 ετών, από το Κουβέιτ.

«Για εμένα είναι ξεκάθαρο ότι εδώ και πάρα πολύ καιρό, εμείς αναγνωρίζαμε σε εκείνους που αντιπροσώπευαν μία εν δυνάμει απειλή για την χώρα μας το πλεονέκτημα της αμφιβολίας» επισήμανε ο Τόνι Άμποτ σε μία ανακοίνωση.

«Εφαρμόζαμε το πλεονέκτημα της αμφιβολίας στα σύνορά μας, το πλεονέκτημα της αμφιβολίας για τις άδειες διαμονής, το πλεονέκτημα της αμφιβολίας για την εθνικότητα και το πλεονέκτημα της αμφιβολίας για (την αρχή κοινωνικής προστασίας) Centrelink» προσέθεσε ο επικεφαλής της κυβέρνησης της Αυστραλίας.

Ο Κουτομπί, που φέρεται να εισήλθε στην Αυστραλία με πλαστά έγγραφα το 2009, έλαβε την αυστραλιανή υπηκοότητα το 2013. Ο Κιάντ ήρθε στην χώρα το 2012.

Ο αυτουργός της ομηρίας του Σίδνεϊ, Μαν Χαρόν Μονίς, ένας ισλαμιστής με ψυχολογικά προβλήματα και καταγωγή από το Ιράν, είχε λάβει το 1996 μία βίζα παρά τις προειδοποιήσεις της Τεχεράνης για το βαρύ ποινικό μητρώο του.

«Είμαστε ένα ελεύθερο και δίκαιο έθνος. Όμως αυτό δε σημαίνει ότι μπορούμε να επιτρέπουμε σε πρόσωπα με κακές προθέσεις να μας θεωρούν ανόητους όπως γίνεται πολύ συχνά». «Αυτό θα σταματήσει» τόνισε ο Άμποτ.

«Μπορώ να σας διαβεβαιώσω: ως χώρα δεν θα επιτρέψουμε σε επικίνδυνους ανθρώπους να εκμεταλλευτούν την ελευθερία μας».

Ο πρωθυπουργός δεν παρουσίασε λεπτομέρειες για τα νέα μέτρα, ενώ υποσχέθηκε ότι θα προβεί σε ανακοινώσεις την 23η Φεβρουαρίου.

Το 2015 είναι αφιερωμένο στη διεύρυνση της βάσης των μελών του ΑΙΜΣ με στόχο την εγγραφή εκατοντάδων μελών στις τάξεις του.

«Το Αυστραλιανό Ινστιτούτο Μακεδονικών Σπουδών (ΑΙΜΣ) συμπληρώνει τριάντα χρόνια προσφοράς μέσα από έναν επιστημονικό και πολιτιστικό αγώνα για τα δίκαια της Μακεδονίας και του Ελληνισμού γενικότερα» τονίζει σε ανακοίνωσή του το ιστορικό σωματείο που ιδρύθηκε τον Αύγουστο του 1986 από Έλληνες επιστήμονες με αντικειμενικό στόχο την προβολή της ιστορίας και του πολιτισμού του Μακεδονικού Ελληνισμού.

Το 2015 είναι αφιερωμένο στη διεύρυνση της βάσης των μελών του ΑΙΜΣ με στόχο την εγγραφή εκατοντάδων μελών στις τάξεις του. Ήδη μέλη του ΑΙΜΣ έχουν ενταχθεί από την Πέρθη, την Αδελαΐδα, το Σίδνεϊ και την Καμπέρα, ενώ η Μελβούρνη παραμένει το κέντρο του φορέα.

Την ερχόμενη εβδομάδα, σε συνεργασία με την Παμμακεδονική Ένωση Μελβούρνης θα προβληθεί η ταινία «Μαντώ Μαυρογένους» και θα συνοδευτεί από σχόλια και ερμηνείες. Η ταινία θα προβληθεί στην αίθουσα διαλέξεων της Παμμακεδονικής που έχει κατάλληλα διαρρυθμιστεί για προβολές. Την 1η Μαρτίου, ως επισκέπτης του ΑΙΜΣ, επισκέπτεται την Αυστραλία ο Έλληνας παιδαγωγός, καθηγητής Μιχάλης Δαμανάκης, για σειρά διαλέξεων σε εκπαιδευτικούς, γονείς και μαθητές. Ο κ. Δαμανάκης θα μιλήσει στην Αδελαΐδα, τη Μελβούρνη και το Σίδνεϊ. Στη Μελβούρνη θα δώσει δύο δημόσιες διαλέξεις στην αίθουσα διαλέξεων του νέου κτιρίου της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης, στις 6 και 9 Μαρτίου στις 7.30 το βράδυ.

Στις 25 Μαρτίου στις 7.30 στην αίθουσα Νίκος Ανδριανάκος του Alphington Grammar, ο πρώην πρωθυπουργός, κ. Jeff Kennett, θα παρουσιάσει το βιβλίο του καθηγητή κ.Αναστασίου Τάμη, με τίτλο «Macedonian Hellenes in Oceania», που ανέλαβε ως έργο της η Παμμακεδονική Ένωση Μελβούρνης και Βικτωρίας με την οικονομική βοήθεια της ΦΑΑΘ από τη Θεσσαλονίκη και Ελλήνων επιχειρηματιών, αλλά και μακεδονικών σωματείων. Την ογκώδη και πολυτελή αυτή έκδοση εξέδωσε ο Εκδοτικός Οίκος Τζιόλα στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Στην τελετή, την οποία θα παρουσιάσει η εκλεκτή παρουσιάστρια της τηλεόραση, κ. Ελένη Κάπαλου, θα παραστεί ως εκπρόσωπος του Εκδοτικού Οίκου από την Ελλάδα, ο κ. Εμμανουήλ Τζιόλας με τη σύζυγό του.

Τον ερχόμενο Νοέμβριο, στο πλαίσιο των Δημητρίων 2015 το ΑΙΜΣ οργανώνει μουσικό κονσέρτο υπό τη διεύθυνση του μουσικοσυνθέτη, κ. Χρήστου Ιωαννίδη, ο οποίος θα μελοποιήσει ποιήματα με περιεχόμενο τη Μακεδονία.

ΣΥΝΤΟΜΗ ΑΠΟΤΙΜΗΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΡΟΣΦΟΡΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΙΜΣ ΣΤΟΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΣΜΟ

– Το ΑΙΜΣ ιδρύθηκε τον Αύγουστο του 1986 στη Μελβούρνη και συμπληρώνει τριάντα χρόνια δράσης και προσφοράς το 2016.

– Αποκτά ιδιόκτητη στέγη το 1988 στο προάστιο Brunswick της Μελβούρνης.

– Το 1998 μεταστεγάζεται στο Πανεπιστήμιο La Trobe, και αποτελεί ακαδημαϊκό πυλώνα του Εθνικού Κέντρου Ελληνικών Μελετών και Έρευνας μέχρι το 2008. Το κτίριο του ΑΙΜΣ ενοικιάζεται και το εισόδημά του καλύπτει τα έξοδα των δραστηριοτήτων του μέχρι το σήμερα.

– Στο διάστημα 1988-2007 οργανώνει τέσσερα Διεθνή Συνέδρια για τη Μακεδονία, Αρχαία, Βυζαντινή και Νεότερη και για την ελληνική Μακεδονική Διασπορά.

– Στο διάστημα 1990-2005 εκδίδει με δικούς του πόρους ή σε συνεργασία με εμπορικούς εκδοτικούς οίκους, τέσσερις συλλογικούς τόμους (Macedonian Ηellenism, Ancient Macedonia, Byzantine Macedonia-History, Byzantine Macedonia- Culture and Arts).

– Εμπορικοί εκδοτικοί οίκοι εκδίδουν από μόνοι τους ή σε συνεργασία με το Μουσείο Μακεδονικού Αγώνα, έργα με συγγραφείς του ΑΙΜΣ, συγκεκριμένα ένα συλλογικό τόμο με τίτλο Macedonian Identities (2008) και δύο μονογραφίες, ήτοι History of Immigration and Settlement of Macedonian Greeks in Australia (1994) και Macedonian Hellenes in Oceania (2015).

– Στην περίοδο 1991-2001 οι λειτουργοί του ΑΙΜΣ πρωτοστατούν σε δημοσιογραφικούς αγώνες της Ομογένειας με άρθρα και μελέτες σε αγγλόφωνες εφημερίδες, παραστάσεις στην αγγλόφωνη τηλεόραση, σε επιστημονικό διάλογο με τους Μακεδονοσλάβους σε επιστημονικά και διεθνή φόρα, Amnesty International, Human Rights Commission, σε δικαστικούς αγώνες εκπροσωπώντας την πολιτειακή και την αυστραλιανή κυβέρνηση στο δικαστήριο των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων όπου προσέφυγαν οι Μακεδονοσλάβοι για την ονομασία της γλώσσας τους ως Macedonian Slavonic από την πολιτειακή κυβέρνηση Jeff Kennett. Το ΑΙΜΣ εκλέγεται ως ο οργανισμός που συντονίζει τον διάλογο με τις κοινοπολιτειακές κυβερνήσεις των Paul Κeating και, αργότερα, John Howard, συμβουλεύει τον εκάστοτε Αυστραλό Πρέσβη στην Ελλάδα αναφορικά με θέματα που αφορούν το μακεδονικό κ.ά.

– Με το εισόδημα των ενοικίων από το 1998 και εξής έχει προσφέρει υποτροφίες σε φοιτητές και καλλιτέχνες, στήριξε ερευνητικά προγράμματα, συνέβαλε στη διδασκαλία της Ελληνικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Monash, ενίσχυσε τη συντήρηση των Μακεδονικών τάφων στη Μίεζα, προίκισε συνέδριο για τον Αριστοτέλη και τις Αριστοτελικές Σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης, ενίσχυσε οικονομικά προσπάθειες για τη συντήρηση βυζαντινών τοιχογραφιών σε Ναούς στη Δυτική Μακεδονία, ενίσχυσε τα ελληνικά προγράμματα στο Ημερήσιο Ελληνικό Σχολείο Alphington Grammar, ενίσχυσε οικονομικά την ανέγερση του Κοινοτικού Κέντρου από την Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης.

– Το 2011 υπογράφεται δεκαετής συνεργασία με την Παμμακεδονική Ένωση Mελβούρνης και Βικτωρίας και τα γραφεία του ΑΙΜΣ μεταφέρονται στο κτίριο της ΠΕΜΒ.

– Το 2012 το ΑΙΜΣ γίνεται μέλος του Australian Hellenic Council, το 2013 υπογράφεται Συμφωνία Συνεργασίας με την Εταιρεία Μακεδονικών Σπουδών στη Θεσσαλονίκη και την Ακαδημία Θεσμών και Πολιτισμών. Την ίδια περίοδο (2011-2015) συνεργάζεται στενά με τα Τμήματα Ιστορίας του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, Αθηνών και το Παιδαγωγικό Τμήμα του Πανεπιστημίου της Κρήτης στην έκδοση μελετών και συλλογικών τόμων με αντικείμενο τη Μακεδονία.

Από εδώ και πέρα η Μελβούρνη δεν θα είναι μόνο η πιο όμορφη πόλη του κόσμου, αλλά και η πιο ζωντανή…

Πάνω από 700.000 συμπολίτες μας αναμένεται να συνωστισθούν στο κέντρο της πόλης μόνο το Σάββατο το βράδυ για να συμμετάσχουν στο Φεστιβάλ του Φωτός…

Οι αρμόδιοι έχουν ήδη προειδοποιήσει τους φεστιβαλιστές να είναι προετοιμασμένοι και υπομονετικοί γιατί η πόλη θα κατακλείσει από εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες άτομα που θα αναζητούν λίγο χώρο για να κινηθούν και να περπατήσουν.

Εκτός από το Φεστιβάλ της Λευκής Νύχτας -που έγινε για πρώτη φόρα πέρυσι και ξεπέρασε σε προσέλευση κάθε προηγούμενο- θα υπάρχουν και Φεστιβάλ μουσικής, κονσέρτα καθώς και το Φεστιβάλ των για το νέο έτος των Κινέζων που γίνεται κάθε χρόνο τέτοια εποχή.

Αν κοντά σε όλα τα πιο πάνω προσθέσετε και τον μεγάλο αγώνα κρίκετ για το παγκόσμιο πρωτάθλημα που θα γίνεται στο MCG, τότε πάνω από 900.000 άτομα θα κατέβουν στο Σίτι κατά τη διάρκεια του Σαββατοκύριακου.

Για να κινηθεί πιο εύκολα όλος αυτός ο κόσμος και προκειμένου να μην πάθει ασφυξία το κέντρο της πόλης από τα πολλά αυτοκίνητα, τα τρένα και τα τραμ θα έχουν περισσότερα δρομολόγια και θα κυκλοφορούν όλη τη νύχτα.

Να σημειώσουμε εδώ ότι στην περυσινή Λευκή Νύχτα είχε σημειωθεί το αδιαχώρητο τόσο στο Swanston Street όσο και γύρω από το Federatiopn Square και πολλοί επισκέπτες χρειάστηκαν 20 λεπτά της ώρας να περπατήσουν 100 μέτρα.

Kim Kardashian seems to have no problem going either full frontal or behind-baring, styled by LOVE magazine’s editor-in-chief Katie Grand, dressed entirely in designs by Miuccia Prada.

Kendall Jenner, her subtle supermodel half-sister, managed to steal her thunder once again in the new spring/summer issue of the same magazine.

Nineteen-year-old Kendall is modelling breast and buttock prosthetics, alongside fashion sensations Malgosia Bela, Caroline Trentini, Toni Garn and Lexxi Bowling in the editorial shoot photographed by acclaimed photographer Steven Klein and styled by famous Greek Cypriot fashion director Panos Yiapanis.

Issue 13 of Love magazine hit the stands on 9 February, bringing on the best-selling imagery in 2015, thanks to Panos Yiapanis’ specially commissioned art project, aptly dubbed ‘Boobs’.

The stylist, who grew up in Athens and is one of the most influential people in the industry, created this provocative editorial in order to explore the changing ideals of body shape, using stick-on bums and boobs which were especially created for the shoot by prosthetics experts at Tinsley Studios.

Jenner and the other ‘normal’ body-figure models are sporting their alter-egos’ artificially voluptuous and suggestive personality in an effort to discover whether this obsession with a new fuller body shape is valid for fashion designers or not.

“I kind of wanted to question how valid that is for designers, whether it’s just a stunt or if it’s a true shift,” Panos Yiapanis said.

“We’re so accustomed to the shape that’s been on the runway for the past 20 years that I don’t know how honest this new, more curvaceous figure is as an intention.”

Working with custom made silicone prosthetics wasn’t easy according to Yiapanis.

“They were made of silicone, so after a few hours, they kind of started to droop. We’d have to switch pairs and put them in the fridge. They were huge. They were even bigger than DDDs.”

Yiapanis confessed to not focusing on the actual styling, but on the fact that “the clothes don’t actually fit those bodies”.

“Usually with my shoots, there’s an elaborate fashion concept, but not for this one. It was about the body shape that I wanted to create, and maybe slightly, slightly take it to the point of vulgarity as well,” he previously told style.com

Scenes from ‘Ladies Ready for Everything’ – the ladies with their cheating husbands

Modern Greek Theatre company Thiasos Parikia presents a hilarious comedy by playwright George Lazaridis, Γυναίκες Έτοιμες για όλα (Ladies Ready for Everything).

Performing now at the Renaissance Theatre in Kew, audiences will be entertained by this funny, crazy, and at times raunchy play.

Sisters are doing it for themselves in this production. The women, sick and tired of their husbands being unfaithful and cheating on them, are finally ready to teach them lesson.

What is the best way to seek revenge? By being unfaithful right back of course.

The Ladies Ready for Everything are being played by actors Marina Lezou, Fenia Hatzimihail and Suzanna Papadopoulou, while the male cast includes Stavros Arberorois, George Gazetis and Thanasis Makrigiorgos.

A production suitable for all the family, Ladies Ready for Everything will run from Saturday 14 February until Saturday 28 March, with performances taking place every Saturday at 7.30 pm and every Sunday at 4.30 pm.

ERT was pulled from the air in June 2013 and returned as a severely reduced public broadcaster called NERIT.

Many members of the Greek disapora are anxiously waiting for the results of the a bill tabled in Greek parliament aimed at re-establishing the public Greek broadcaster ERT.

The bill will be submitted to the parliament next month, according to Greek minister of state, Nikos Pappas

It will provide a clear and statutory legal framework to ensure the future of the network and that all factors are taken into consideration.

“The government decided to open ERT because the people decided to open ERT. The wound that was created in the body of democracy will heal,” he said.

The minister of state also went on to say that any past employees of ERT who still wished to work for the network could return if they wished.

He clarified that their employment would not burden the state’s budget as it would continue to be funded through a fee levy on every Greek household’s electricity bill.

ERT was pulled from the air in June 2013 by the then government, and was reinstated with a severely cut staff under a new name NERIT (New Greek Radio, Internet & Television organisation).

Currently the channel is on air with six radio channels and two TV channels, a far cry from the three channels and 19 local and five national radio stations.

For the ultimate Anzac Centenary experience with a Hellenic twist, a 12-day guided tour to Greece in April was launched this week, offering deep insights into the remarkable role played by the island of Lemnos in particular in the Gallipoli legend.

Organised by the World Hellenic InterParliamentary Association, the tour, which begins on April 17, will immerse those taking part in every aspect of the island’s relationship to the Dardanelles campaign, with interpretive events at key locations and what will be immensely moving commemorations at the East Mudros Bay and Portianou war cemeteries on the island.

Lemnos, in the northern Aegean, was the principal assembly point and supply-base for the Gallipoli landings in April 1915.

With participants joining official parliamentarians, the tour program will include exclusive access to official events on Royal Australian Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy vessels and attendance at civic receptions.

After four days on Lemnos the tour moves to the mainland, where a second generation of Anzacs fought in April 1941, and will visit the town of Vevi, where Australian forces were defeated in the opening days of the German invasion of Greece.

On Anzac Day itself, the tour will be in the Greek capital in time for the dawn service at Phaleron War Cemetery, followed by a reception held by the Australian Embassy.

An extended five-day tour to Crete beginning on April 28 will take in the main Battle of Crete sites.

Tour organiser John Pandazopoulos told Neos Kosmos that the trip will be a unique opportunity to gain a unique insight into the historic events that took place on the island, and a chance to visit other key ANZAC sites in Greece.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the special relationship forged between Greece and Australia in wartime,” said Mr Pandazopoulous, the former Victorian state MP.

“It is going to be a very special trip. The Australian and NZ embassies in Greece are of course pulling out all the stops to make the official events spectacular.”

Mr Pandazopoulos has been a vocal campaigner in efforts to lobby the Greek state and regional authorities to embrace the concept of an ‘ANZAC trail’ – to promote sites of historical significance – and the many unmarked battlefield sites where Australian and New Zealand troops fought.

The cost of the 12-day tour – organised by licenced agent Anzac Tours in Greece – starts at $3,480 (€2,390) with a single supplement of $860 (€590). The tour fee includes accommodation in four and five-star hotels, coach travel and guides.

The EU is a complex yet flexible institution. That said, it is important that you always have an idea of who you are talking to, who makes the hard decisions and who you can rely on in times of need.

Greece’s bailout governments often ended up in a mess because they misinterpreted the signals coming from abroad. In some cases, they mistook northern European niceties for a nod of approval. There have been ministers who claimed to be certain of the troika’s wants because they had earlier spoken to task force officials in Athens. Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras believed up until October that the European Commission would step in to wrap up the evaluation process on certain mild conditions before he could move on to pursuing an agreement on the Greek debt. We all know what followed.

Those who engage in this endless and exhausting power game are always in danger of committing a very costly mistake. The current government is inexperienced but it has a mandate for a tough negotiation. It has drawn its own red lines but it is important to know the other side’s red lines as well. The European Commission traditionally wants to help reach a compromise solution because it is allergic to anything that could jeopardize the European project. But that is only as far as it can go. The EU’s executive did not want IMF involvement in Europe, yet this was imposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Now it wants a face-saving solution for Athens and Berlin. However, it has become clear that when the Eurogroup gets under way, the Commission and European Parliament play second fiddle.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras questions the decision-making process because, as he said on Tuesday, it does not make sense to hold a Eurogroup meeting and then have one government make the decision. As an experienced leftist he knows a thing or two about the balance of power. He knows that there is no such thing as a southern alliance, a northern alliance, or in fact any alliance that would be there to support Greece ahead of a clash. The Americans would not like to see an accident but there is not much they can do. The same goes for the Chinese. Russia is a strong card that you can only flash once or twice.

Will an accident be avoided? The danger is clear. Tsipras could be vindicated on having warned against the disastrous austerity and of having spoken of Germany’s counterproductive hegemony. But Greece will have still suffered serious damage. Tsipras, and the rest of us, will still be here, in rather unpleasant circumstances. The others will be out playing the blame game about why the Greek case ended in fiasco.

Greece will submit a request to the eurozone on Wednesday to extend a “loan agreement” for up to six months but EU paymaster Germany says no such deal is on offer and Athens must stick to the terms of its existing international bailout.

The move, confirmed by an official spokesman, is an attempt by the new leftist-led government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to keep a financial lifeline for an interim period while avoiding tough austerity conditions in the EU/IMF program.

But it was unclear whether finance ministers of the 19-nation currency bloc, who rejected such ideas at a meeting on Monday, would accept the application as a basis to resume negotiations. A spokesman for the Eurogroup said no request had been received so far.

Hardline German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble dismissed the Greek gambit, telling broadcaster ZDF on Tuesday evening: “It’s not about extending a credit program but about whether this bailout program will be fulfilled, yes or no.”

Greek bond yields fell sharply and shares rallied after government spokesman Gabriel Sakellaridis confirmed Athens would send a formal application on Wednesday.

“Let’s wait today for the request for an extension of the loan agreement to be submitted by Finance Minister (Yanis) Varoufakis,” he told Antenna TV.

Behind-the-scenes talks were continuing to seek common ground and Greece believed it was on the right path, he said.

“We are coming to the table to find a solution,” the spokesman said. «We will not back down on certain points that we consider red lines. The (bailout) memorandum died on Jan. 25.”

That was the day Greek voters elected a government led by Tsipras’s hard left SYRIZA party, which had promised to scrap the 240 billion euro bailout, reverse austerity measures and end cooperation with the hated “troika” of inspectors from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF.

ECB reviews lending

The ECB’s governing council will meet later on Wednesday in Frankfurt to decide whether to continue and possibly increase emergency lending assistance to Greece’s banks, plagued by deposit withdrawals.

The ECB is not expected to pull the plug this week but Germany’s Bundesbank is leading opposition to any increase in the funding by the Greek central bank, people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

Without added liquidity, the banks face a tightening squeeze as savers withdraw money that could force Greece to introduce capital controls if there is no deal.

A source close to the Greek government said the loan extension request would be based on a draft text drawn up earlier this week by EU Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici, which was discarded by eurozone finance ministers when they met on Monday.

The Moscovici draft leaked to reporters would also have committed Greece not to take unilateral steps to reverse measures implemented under the bailout, but Tsipras told SYRIZA lawmakers on Tuesday he would hasten legislation to scrap labour market deregulation.

With the current bailout due to expire at the end of February and several eurozone countries needing parliamentary ratification of any change or extension, time is running short.

Eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem has said Greece must request an extension of the existing bailout by the weekend or the program will expire on Feb. 28.

Greece could then run out of money within weeks since it has to make hefty repayments to the IMF in March.

As the deadline approaches, several European leaders called Tsipras to seek a solution, including Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has also been trying to broker a compromise.
