Ready to sign

gkokas%20Vasileios

Vasileios Gkokas, Greek Consul for Education Affairs in Melbourne.

Greek diplomats in Australia have been given the go ahead to sign, on behalf of the Greek Ministry of Education, an updated Memorandum of Understanding on Educational Cooperation, concerning the future of the Greek language in Victoria, the Consul of Education Affairs in Melbourne Mr Vasileios Gkokas told Neos Kosmos. The agreement with the Department of Education of Victoria will be based on the almost completed Memorandum of 2011, which was not signed at the very last moment because of the political developments in Greece.

“We have the approval of Greece to sign,” says Mr Gkokas, referring to the attempts of the Greek side to improve the terms and conditions of the Memorandum. Greece contributed and continues to contribute teachers to Victorian schools to teach Greek. “Now that Greece has some problems, it will be good if Victoria accepts part of the financial burden for the salaries of those who come to teach Greek in Victoria, we have noticed that this is happening with the teachers of other languages”, he says.

In this upcoming Memorandum, the emphasis will be on the need for a permanent institutional dialogue at regular time intervals on the state of the Greek language. “All these years we have appointed a teacher that works closely together with the Department of Education in Victoria and the Victorian side does the same with us” states the Consul of Education.

“Greece is working to sign updated Memoranda of Understanding on Educational Cooperation with the state governments of New South Wales and South Australia, while at the same time we have done preparatory work with the government of the Northern Territory”, said Mr. Gkokas. The future of the Greek language in Australia is in the hands of the Greek Australian Community, believes the Consul of Education who goes on to say that there is no point using arguments from a bygone era in order to map a course of action for the future. “We no longer have the first generation who spoke and nurtured the language”.

The Australian Government through the national curriculum gave the Greek community the opportunity to be able to learn its own language in the state school system, but “It is the law of supply and demand”, as Mr. Gkokas states. “If the community is insular and does not get involved in school councils, if it does not make it a priority to learn the language, we will fall behind, and this is what is happening in the last few years in Victoria”. It takes a lot of individual and well-coordinated collective effort to support the Greek language he added and of course, we need to spend money to advance our cause Australia wide and on a tertiary level.

“We have the largest number of ethnic schools across Melbourne, about 40. The Chinese have almost 13 to 14 .These schools do their job, whether religious, private, or community they do their job, but we need to coordinate our actions”.

The Ambassador of Greece to Australia Mr Haris Dafaranos and the Consul General in Melbourne, are contemplating calling a meeting of all the Greek language stakeholders in the near future. “We wish to help establish a Foundation to fund the learning of Greek and we also need to map a common course of action” the Education Consul says.

The Greek state will play its institutional role, as expected by the community, and it will continue to help says Mr Gkokas. “The number of Greek teachers from Greece becoming available to teach Greek to the three Greek Colleges to the Universities (Monash, La Trobe, RMIT) in Melbourne, the State School system or to the recognised afternoon Greek schools, might have declined, due to the crisis, however, Greece continues to support the teaching of the Greek language in the Antipodes”, he says.

Greece will continue to train teachers of Greek in Australia through the University of Crete. “We might not be able to invite teachers to Crete anymore, but within the next few days Greek academics from the University of Crete will be arriving in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, to conduct a number of Seminars specifically for teachers of the Greek language in Australia,” he said.

There is also the Australian federal government sponsored teacher training program ‘Endeavour’, run in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. “Hopefully, the Australian wide application of a Crete University web based pilot program in the near future, that will supply schools, teachers and students with everything they need in order to teach and to learn Greek, will also become available;” said Mr Gkokas, stressing that the future of teaching Greek in Australia is ultimately in the hands of the community.

Abbott and Samaras hail special relationship

A dinner organised this week in Athens by the Hellenic-Australian Business Council (HABC), to mark Australia’s 2014 presidency of the G20 and Greece’s presidency of the EU, heard an unequivocal message from Tony Abbott and Antonis Samaras – that relations between Australia and Greece are as strong as ever, and that both countries will utilise their respective presidencies to help kick-start the global economy.
Whilst neither prime minister could attend in person – specially pre-recorded presentations from each leader were used instead – hundreds of dignitaries who gathered at the Acropolis Museum on Tuesday witnessed both leaders express their confidence in further extending bilateral cooperation.
In his address, Prime Minister Samaras highlighted the bonds of friendship between Australia and Greece, forged through shared sacrifice in war, and described Australia as having always been “a decent and a proper friend” to Greece.
The Greek PM said that he wished to underline the importance of trade relations between Greece and Australia, and that the EU and G20 presidencies brought with them similar challenges.
“In recent days, Australia has assumed the responsibility of the G20 – the 20 most advanced countries of the world – at a point when the whole world must begin the effort of restarting the world economy,” said Mr Samaras.
“Now at a time when the economic crisis has hurt Greece so much, but at the same time it has begun to be overcome, we Europeans are being called upon to take steps towards economic recovery.”
Mr Samaras underscored the “extremely important” role of business relations between the two countries, and the contribution of the HABC in the task of forging closer links and grasping the opportunities on offer for both countries.
“To this end, the important contribution of Greek Australians and the Hellenic-Australian Business Council, is something that unites us in forging extraordinary cooperation opportunities for the future. Opportunities for which, of course, the respective business communities of both countries will have the first say and ultimate responsibility.”
Greece’s Minister of Development and Competitiveness, Mr Kostis Hatzidakis – who gave the event’s keynote speech on Mr Samaras’ behalf – said that Australia’s economic and structural reform experience was a “tangible success story”, and had succeeded in transforming an economy that was in recession in the 1980s, into one of the world’s most open, competitive and outward-looking economies.
Minister Hatzidakis said that Greece was committed to following a similar path – laying the foundations for an open and investment-friendly environment – and that a mark of progress was the OECD’s recent ranking of Greece as the pre-eminent country for implementation of development-focused structural reforms.
In her opening remarks, Australia’s Ambassador to Greece Jenny Bloomfield referred to the close ties between the two countries and thanked those who had contributed to the establishment of the HABC. Before introducing the Australian Prime Minister’s video clip, Ambassador Bloomfield encouraged Greek businesses to further explore trade and investment opportunities in Australia.
Tony Abbott’s video message articulated his strongest comments on the Australian Government’s relationship to Greece since becoming PM.
Mr Abbott said that as both countries began their respective global and EU presidencies, Greece and Australia had similar goals: “To build a stronger, private sector-led world economy, with more trade, more jobs, more growth and better infrastructure”.
The PM added that he welcomed the establishment of the HABC for encouraging bilateral trade. “Greece has been the source of ideas that have changed the world. That’s why people everywhere still look to Greece with respect and affection,” he said.
Mr Abbott’s message concluded by acknowledging “the challenges that Greece has faced in recent times.”
“But Greeks know their history,” said the PM. “And history demonstrates that there will be better times ahead”.
The HABC dinner was hosted by President of the Hellenic Australian Business Council Mr Michalis Bodouroglou and the HABC’s Board of Directors. Also present was
the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Vaggelis Meimarakis who delivered a welcome address.
Over 300 participants attended the event, including Greece’s Minister of Tourism Ms Olga Kefalogianni, Minister of Health, Mr Adonis Georgiadis, Secretary General for International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation (MFA) – Mr Panagiotis Mihalos, as well as foreign ambassadors and Greek and Australian business leaders.

george-michael

His first in ten years

It’s been a ten year wait for George Michael fans, but finally the singer is set to release his first new album ‘Symphonica’ on March 17, 2014. This is George’s sixth solo album.

‘Symphonica’ is the first since 2004 hit ‘Patience’ and is a collection of covers from artists such as Elton John and Nina Simone, and original material. The album was produced by the late Phil Ramone, who counted Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin amongst his credits.

The new album will be released by Virgin EMI/Universal Music Group as a deluxe 17-track CD, standard 14-track album and as a ‘pure audio’ Blu-ray disc on March 17.

Another late winner seals three points for Brisbane

00084889-leadimage

Central Coast Mariners were unable to hang on against a Thomas Broich-inspired Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, with a late Besart Berisha goal sealing a 2-1 win for the home side.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead into half time thanks to a Mile Sterjovski penalty, despite Brisbane controlling the majority of possession, but after the break the Roar threw everything at the visitors and eventually broke them down with goals from Henrique and Berisha.

Broich assisted both Brisbane goals to in what was a masterful second-half display.

The win sees the Roar take an imposing seven point lead at the top of the Hyundai A-League table.

The tempo of the game was slowed early on by a series of fouls from both sides, with Nick Montgomery and James Donachie the most frequent offenders.

A dinked through ball from Liam Miller gave Berisha half a chance, but the Albanian’s shot from a tight angle on the left was deflected out for a corner.

Josh Rose forced a sharp save from Michael Theo when he was released into acres of space on the left by a Montgomery pass, with the Brisbane keeper getting down well to his right to deflect the ball wide.

Brisbane might have had all the momentum but it only took an instant for the Mariners to turn the match on its head after a shocking Berisha miss.

The Roar number nine took an air-swing at a low Shane Stefanutto cross before Central Coast broke quickly down the other and Sterjovski, despite a heavy first touch, managed to draw a foul from Theo as he went past him and earn his side a penalty.

The keeper was yellow carded and the striker duly dispatched the penalty to give his side the lead.

Brisbane almost evened the ledger seconds after the half time break when Dimitri Petratos somehow missed a close-range header from a perfect Broich cross.

Petratos had the ball in the net moments later after more brilliant work from Broich down the left, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

Roar right-back James Donachie blazed an effort past the far upright after Broich played a low ball across the Mariners area.

Mariners keeper Reddy had to turn away a firm Petratos shot from wide on the right after a slick passing sequence from the Roar, who had shown real attacking intent after the interval.

The equalising goal eventually came, with Broich instigating the move with an evasive run before the ball went through the feet of Berisha and Petratos before recent substitute Henrique finished with precision into the far corner.

Broich had the Mariners defence mesmerised for much of the second period, and he almost got his name on the scoresheet in the 75th minute when he created space for himself with a clever back-step before unleashing a shot which dipped just over the crossbar.

Berisha, who overall did not play one of his better games for the Roar, latched onto a Broich pass in the 90th minute and fired a shot which Reddy could only parry into the top of the net.

Mariners substitute Mitchell Duke added even more late drama when he skimmed the upright with what was the last kick of the game.

Γκέλα η Λίβερπουλ, κορυφή η Άρσεναλ

liv

Barcelona 2-3 Valencia: It’s advantage Madrid as Barca’s 31-game unbeaten run

VALENCIA

Shock win: Valencia celebrate after scoring their third goal through Alcacer on 58 minutes

Barcelona’s run of 31 games unbeaten in the league at home came to an end on Saturday when they were beaten 3-2 by Valencia.

Having won their last 26 domestic matches at the Camp Nou they paid the price for squandering first half chances and allowing defensive frailties to be exposed.

Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini might be watching this game a few times between now and February 18 – it contained so many of the weaknesses he will hope to expose when the two meet in the Champions League this month.

As well as conceding three Barcelona  also suffered their first sending off of the season with Jordi Alba  dismissed against his former club.

And they cannot complain about refereeing decision in a game where they  were thrown a second half lifeline by a generous penalty against Ricardo Costa.

Barça should never have needed lifelines after dominating the first half.

The players gathered in the centre-circle for the minutes  silence for Luis Aragones before kick-off with four of Barcelona’s  starters having been part of the squad he coached to the European  Championship in 2008.

And  one of those, Xavi, posed the first threat with a corner that Sergi  Busquets headed over. Valencia keeper Diego Alves came out bravely to  stop Alexis connecting with a long ball out from the back. And then  saved again from the Chilean who this time was in an offside position.

On seven minutes the Champions took the lead. The ball fizzed around the  Valencia penalty area and when a wall pass between Fabregas and Pedro  ran to Messi he played it out to Alexis at the back post and from the  tightest of angles he scored over Diego Alves into the roof of the net.

Pique then went off to change his boots after slipping on the wet surface and was not allowed back on at the next stoppage to whistles from home  supporters. It seemed the referee would provide more opposition to  Barcelona than Valencia.

Messi had a shot saved by Diego Alves and then apologised to Jordi Alba who  he should have passed to. Another shot from Messi was turned away for a  corner and from Xavi’s kick Alves shot wide from distance.

Mathieu, who was linked with Barcelona in the summer, then gave the ball  straight to Messi who played it to Xavi. The midfielder picked out Pedro and from his pass to Messi, Diego Alves had to save again. But Barça  could not make their dominance pay and suffered for their squandered  chances.

Valencia first  threatened from a corner which Valdes came for and got nowhere near only for Ricardo Costa to somehow head wide of the empty goal.

Barcelona were then caught three against five at the back when Busquets failed to win the ball in midfield. Dani Parejo surged through and, after  exchanging passes with Feghouli, scored past Valdes.

Three minutes into the second half and Barça were behind; with their weakness in the air exposed. Barragan’s cross was flicked on by Paco Alcacer for Piatti who outjumped Alves to score – Piatti and Alcacer are probably  La Liga’s smallest strikers. The Catalans will have to improve against  Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko.

The lead lasted all of six minutes thanks to Messi and referee Pedro Perez  Montero who pointed to the spot after the ball hit Costa on what  appeared to be the shoulder. Messi ruthlessly hammered home the penalty  into the roof of Diego Alves’ net.

Any thoughts that that might end Valencia’s resistance disappeared when  they scored next. Feghouli got to the byline after Busquets was beaten in  the tackle and his cross found Alcacer who shot past Valdes unmarked.

Barcelona  brought on Andres Iniesta for Xavi and Valencia keeper Diego Alves was  almost caught out trying to dribble around Busquets but Valencia were  holding out and looking very dangerous on the break.

Barcelona’s attempts to get back in the game were dealt another blow when a  deliberate foul from Jordi Alba to block a counter attack earned him his second yellow. That made the difficult impossible though there was  still time for Messi to shoot just wide from the edge of the six-yard  box after Iniesta’s backheel.

‘It wasn’t a penalty,’ said Valencia manager Antonio Pizzi of the kick awarded against Costa. ‘It hit his shoulder. But in the end it did not affect the result.’

Barcelona coach Tata Martino said: ‘If you look at the first half an hour of the game it is very hard to explain the way the match turned. We made mistakes and losses of concentration and they took full advantage.’

Barcelona have now taken just five points in last four games and for the first time in 107 games Messi knows what it is like to score in the Camp Nou and still lose the game. Barcelona could be third by Sunday night if Atletico Madrid beat Real Sociedad and Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao.

Transfer Deadline Day: Liverpool fail in Yevhen Konoplyanka move

ukraine

Liverpool’s deal for Dnipro and Ukraine attacker Yevhen Konoplyanka fell through late on transfer deadline day.

The Reds agreed a deal with the player, who was keen on the move, but Dnipro’s owner did not sign the paperwork.

The 24-year-old, valued at £15m, emerged as the Reds’ main January target after Basel’s Mohamed Salah instead chose to join Chelsea for £11m.

Boss Brendan Rodgers told the club website:  “I’m very optimistic with the group I still have.”

The Northern Irishman admitted he “would like to have strengthened” but said failing to sign Konoplyanka was not “because of a lack of work by the football club”.

“There are lots of people who have worked tirelessly to identify and find the right types of players,” added Rodgers, whose team are fourth in the Premier League.

“If you look at the position that we’re in with 15 games to go, we have shown consistently that we have the squad to compete.

“If we can keep those players fit, and maximise the availability for the rest of the season, we can have a great chance to have a really good finish.”

Konoplyanka, who has 35 caps, scored at Wembley in a 1-1 draw against England in September 2012.

The forward, who can play wide on the left or up front, has scored 25 goals in 125 league games for Dnipro.
