As the national curriculum is set for review, migrant history may not make it past the chopping block.

Migrant history and multiculturalism might be reduced or cut in the national curriculum as the Abbott government seeks to review the program.
The government hopes to clear the way for reforms that could expunge parts of the history syllabus, which Prime Minster Tony Abbott has blasted for favouring leftist views.
The current national curriculum includes quite an extensive exploration of migration and Australia’s multicultural history, and much of the syllabus aims to create intercultural understanding amongst students.
Multicultural history in Australia is taught over six years in the history syllabus, including examining the role people of diverse backgrounds have played in the development and character of a local community, early migration and democracy and citizenship in Australia.
In year seven, students can also take an elective to study ancient Greece and the Mediterranean.
The first stage of the national curriculum introduced in 2011 after two years of consulting. The ACT was the first state to implement the curriculum, and other states have followed to become national curriculum compliant. The curriculum was an initiative the then Gillard Government hoped would centralise education and increase literacy and numeracy test results in the country that have been falling for the past decade. She hoped to include three themes in the curriculum, sustainability, indigenous affairs and Asia.
Many states still haven’t introduced the national curriculum in the syllabus yet, with many hoping to introduce when schools start late January, prompting eachers to argue the review is premature.
Only Mathematics, English, History, Science and Geography are ready to be implemented, while the rest of the curriculum is still being developed. The language program that includes Modern Greek is still being developed and is predicted to be ready in May.
A group of 150 professors, lecturers, teachers and principals have signed an open and highly critical letter to Education Minister Christopher Pyne expressing their concerns about the timing and design of the review announced on Friday.
Minister Pyne wants to see a “balanced” curriculum and says he will implement the suggestions of the review panel when they submit the final report in July 31.
“The review will evaluate the robustness, independence and balance of the Australian Curriculum by looking at both the development process and content,” he says.
Federal president of the Australian Education Union, Angelo Gavrielatos has slammed the review, saying Minister Pyne is “playing politics with the education of Australian children”.
‘The last thing any Australian parent is going to want is for politicians to be deciding which bits of our country’s history their children should learn about, and which bits they shouldn’t,” he tells Neos Kosmos.
For teachers about to start the school year, some teaching from the national curriculum for the first time, the review will be weighing heavily on their minds.
If all recommendations are taken on board and the curriculum changes, many students might be feeling like half the year was a waste.
“Teachers put a great deal of time and effort into preparing class plans, resources and activities,” Mr Gavrielatos says.
“If Mr Pyne takes the whole thing back to the drawing board, there’s no doubt this will have implications for teachers and students when any changes are introduced.”
Minister Pyne has picked Professor Ken Wiltshire and Dr Kevin Donnelly, both vocal critics of the national curriculum to man the review.
Dr Donnelly has previously sited the state curriculums teach ”a politically correct, black-armband view” of the world.
In their letter, more than 150 signatories questioned the credibility and expertise of the two-man panel, saying “we are concerned about whether the panel members will hold the requisite openness to diverse views and perspectives required to produce a balanced and fair review”.
Minister Pyne has voiced he will welcome diverse submissions to the review.

In July, more than 400 community organisations will see $11.5 million cuts in the funding they were already granted under the Building Multicultural Communities Program by the former Labor government in May 2013, in order to provide one-off funding to community groups and local government bodies in 2013-14.
Amongst the organisations that will suffer the budget cuts are South Australia’s Greek community, which has been left devastated after the Liberal government decision.
The Greek Orthodox Community of Saint Spyridon, in Unley of South Australia, is the most affected, with $68,576 in cuts. The Greek Orthodox Communities of St Raphael in Athelstone and of Nativity of Christ in Port Adelaide will lose $10,000 each, while the Greek Orthodox Community Parish of Norwood will be short $9,800.
Following a review of the Federal Budget, the Abbott government has decided to reduce the scope of the program, with the multicultural grants scheme in the firing line, as the federal government confirmed the grants will be axed in July this year.
Nearly $5 million has already been allocated to the program for 2013-14; the amount later increased to about $14 million. The Mid-year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) shows the Coalition government has cut more than $11 million out of the program for the current financial year, with no plans for it to continue into 2014-15.
The Building Multicultural Communities Program offered up to $160,000 to community organisations and local government bodies for small infrastructure projects, with the purpose of enhancing social cohesion.
The axing of the $15 million Building Multicultural Communities Program will directly impact 400 ethnic organisations, with many of those entities already in a difficult financial situation.
Relying on the promised funding by the former Labor government, numerous community groups have already undertaken small projects which will now have to be covered with their own funds.
“From the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia, we would like the government to actually be very clear on this and to explain to the communities what its plans are and the reasons behind it. We don’t believe that this should be done just by a letter. Of course it’s appropriate that the organisations that have put in and believed they would be funded receive those letters, but it’s also important to explain publicly and to the communities why, and the rationale behind it,” the chairman of the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia, Joe Caputo said.
Last year, Coalition senators accused Labor of using multiculturalism grants to ‘pork barrel in the lead-up to the election’, with suggestions the funds were used for things like gym equipment and coffee machines.
However, Father Stavros Psaromatis from the Holy Monastery of Prophet Elias, of the Greek Orthodox Community of Norwood, said the grant was planned for purchasing educational equipment.
“The previous government promised us the funding and it was certain we’d get it. We bought computers and a printer for the needs of the Community Greek School students,” Father Stavros Psaromatis told Neos Kosmos.
As Father Psaromatis explained, the community borrowed money to buy the inventory, relying on the Labor government’s promise for the vital funding.
Now, the infrastructure expenses will have to be paid by the members of the community.
In South Australia, the whole matter will be receiving a greater interest amongst the members of the Greek community as the South Australian state elections are approaching.
Senior state government officials, amongst them Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, Mineral Resources and Energy of the governing Labor party, Tom Koutsantonis, challenged the state opposition leader Steven Marshall and demanded an explanation for what it intends to do to assist Greek organisations and local government bodies that are losing the funding and have already borrowed money to cover their infrastructure upgrades.

A sizeable earthquake has struck the lower half of New Zealand’s North Island, knocking power out for a while in the town of Eketahuna, as well as causing property damage between Wellington and Manawatu.

The US Geological Survey said the 6.2 magnitude quake struck about 3.52pm (1.52pm AEDT), 34 kilometres south-south-east of Palmerston North at a depth of 28 kilometres.

A police central communications spokesman said no major damage was reported in the city.

“It’s just resting there; it’s all completely intact.”

Wellington regional civil defence controller Bruce Pepperell said that, other than the fallen eagle at the airport, he has received no other reports of damage in his area.

“There’s been limited damage in Palmerston North and lower Hawke’s Bay with the odd chimney and things like that,” he told AAP.

“Other than giving us a really good rattle, there’s no damage south of Eketahuna that I’m aware of.”

Tranz Metro has suspended all train services in Wellington.

Heather Gowans and her partner Adrian Tutauha live in Solway, Masterton, about 40 kilometres from the quake centre.

“It was really shaking and rolling – it went on for about 30 seconds. Adrian ran to grab the flat screen TV just in time. It just kept going and going and was swaying really bad. Everything was swaying and the place was creaking and groaning – but luckily nothing is broken.”

William Lane, 57, of Palmerston North, said: “We were just standing, talking to my partner in the hall, and we got a good fright actually.

“I’ve been around for quite awhile and that’d be by far the biggest one I’ve felt.”

Mr Lane said his dog was running in circles, his pictures were knocked askew and he felt his house buckle during the quake. He and his partner were almost knocked off their feet, he said.

Hundreds of shoppers in Lower Hutt’s Queensgate Mall were evacuated following the quake, which left people screaming and ducking for cover as items fell from shelves.

Gas Eketahuna Service Station owner Lisa Seator said power was knocked out for  about 15 minutes in the town, and her business had suffered damage.

“The  microwave’s ended up in the middle of the floor and we had fridges tipped over  here,” she told NZ Newswire.

“We’ve also had reports of a fire at the  substation, which might have been what took the power out.”

Ms Seator  said the forecourt was crowded with people coming to get some  supplies.

“It was very violent and went on for quite a while,” she  said.

“It gave us a good shake, but I haven’t heard of anybody injured as  yet.”

At least seven aftershocks, one as high as a magnitude 4.5, have been recorded  since the main quake.

Sergeant Pete Theobald of police communications  said most calls reporting damage were from around the  Eketahuna area, and they were still assessing how widespread it was.

The New Zealand dollar dropped after the quake, falling as much as 0.3 per cent to 82.32 US cents, the least since January 10. It traded at 82.39 US cents at 4.10pm local time.

New Zealand sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of volcanic and quake activity that circles the Pacific Ocean.

Wellington’s city centre was temporarily closed after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck on July 21 last year, blowing out windows, throwing goods from store shelves and sending people running from buildings.

A magnitude 6.3 quake in February 2011 in the South Island city of Christchurch killed 185 people, the nation’s deadliest in eight decades.

Οι πυροσβέστες πήραν το «πάνω χέρι» στη μάχη που δίνουν με δεκάδες πυρκαγιές στη Νότια Αυστραλία και τη Βικτώρια, αλλά ο κίνδυνος για νέες φωτιές παρουσιάζεται αυξημένος στη Νέα Νότια Ουαλία.

Στη Νότια Αυστραλία κάηκαν 15 σπίτια, αλλά, σύμφωνα με την Πυροσβεστική Υπηρεσία, θα περάσουν μέρες έως γίνει γνωστό το πραγματικό μέγεθος της καταστροφής. Στη Νότια Αυστραλία κάηκαν περίπου 400.000 εκτάρια δασικής έκτασης ενώ η Πυροσβεστική δεν αποκλείει ορισμένες φωτιές να οφείλονται σε εμπρησμό.  Στη Βικτώρια και, συγκεκριμένα, στα Γκράμπιανς μια γυναίκα έχασε τη ζωή της εξαιτίας της πυρκαγιάς.

Στην περιοχή αυτή η κατάσταση είναι υπό έλεγχο, αλλά θα περάσουν μέρες έως ότου σβήσουν εντελώς οι φωτιές. Πύρινα μέτωπα μαίνονται και σε άλλες περιοχές της Βικτώριας.

Η Βικτώρια και η Νότια Αυστραλία πέρασαν τέσσερις ημέρες εξαιρετικά υψηλών θερμοκρασιών με αποτέλεσμα να καταρριφθούν πολλά ρεκόρ.

$650 εκ. «τσεκούρεμα» στην ξένη βοήθεια

Η ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση θα περικόψει $650 εκ. από τη μέχρι τώρα συνεισφορά της σε παγκόσμιες πρωτοβουλίες όσον αφορά θέματα επιπτώσεων των κλιματικών αλλαγών, υγείας και κρίσης σε αναπτυσσόμενες χώρες.

Το «κούρεμα» στη βοήθεια προς τριτοκοσμικές  χώρες που ανακοινώθηκε προχθές (Σάββατο), θα κόψει σχεδόν ένα τέταρτο του δισεκατομμυρίου ενίσχυσης από την περιοχή Ασίας–Ειρηνικού και Νότιας Ασίας, παρά τις διαβεβαιώσεις της υπουργού Εξωτερικών, Julie Bishop, περί του αντιθέτου. Ο διευθυντής του οργανισμού Plan International, Ian Wishart, θα πει ότι οι περικοπές αυτές έρχονται στο μέσον σχεδόν του οικονομικού έτους, γεγονός που δημιουργεί προβλήματα σε πολύ σοβαρά έργα τα οποία βρίσκονται καθ’ οδόν.

Η υπουργός Εξωτερικών θα πει ότι «τα κονδύλια που διέθετε η προηγούμενη Εργατική κυβέρνηση δεν είχαν συγκεκριμένο στόχο, αλλά και ούτε ήταν δυνατόν να διατηρηθούν. Με $47 δις έλλειμμα στον κρατικό προϋπολογισμό και το κυβερνητικό χρέος να προβλέπεται ότι θα υπερβεί τα $667 δις, είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να βεβαιωθούμε ότι το πρόγραμμα ξένης βοήθειας το οποίο αναλαμβάνει η Αυστραλία διέπεται από υπευθυνότητα και δυνατότητα υλοποίησης».

Πιο αναλυτικά, η Αυστραλία θα περικόψει $75.4 εκατ. από ανθρωπιστικά, άμεσης ανάγκης και προσφυγικά προγράμματα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων $8,5 εκατ. από τον Ερυθρό Σταυρό, $4 εκατ. από δωρεές στον ΟΗΕ για θέματα προσφύγων και $1 εκατ. από τον ίδιο οργανισμό για το ταμείο Peacekeeping Fund. Επίσης, θα περικόψει $23.9 εκατ. από άλλους διεθνείς οργανισμούς, συμπεριλαμβανομένων $6 εκατ. από το Αναπτυξιακό Πρόγραμμα των Ενωμένων Εθνών, $4.2 εκατ. από τη UNICEF και $3.4 εκατ. από τον Διεθνή Οργανισμό Υγείας.

Η πρώην υπουργός Οικονομικών, γερουσιαστής Penny Wong, θα χαρακτηρίσει τις περικοπές «σκληρές» (heartless), τονίζοντας ότι η Αυστραλία είναι μια γενναιόδωρη χώρα και είναι σε θέση να δώσει χέρι βοηθείας σε εκείνους που έχουν ανάγκη.

Ο Λουκάς Βύντρα έδωσε προβάδισμα στην Λεβάντε κόντρα στην Μπαρτσελόνα και τελικά οι “μπλαουγκράνα” έχασαν δύο βαθμούς στο “Θιουδάδ ντε Βαλένθια”.

Με πρωταγωνιστή τον Λουκά Βύντρα η Λεβάντε υποχρέωσε σε ισοπαλία την Μπαρτσελόνα με 1-1 στο “Θιουδάδ ντε Βαλένθια”.

Από εκτέλεση κόρνερ του Αντρέας Ίβανσιτς ο Βύντρα με κεφαλιά άνοιξε το σκορ στο 10′, ο Ζεράρ Πικέ απάντησε στο 19′, επίσης με κεφαλιά από εκτέλεση κόρνερ, αλλά οι “μπλαουγκράνα” δεν κατάφεραν να φτάσουν στην ανατροπή.

The Socceroos look set to face Croatia in their crucial final warm-up match in Brazil a week before they kick off their World Cup campaign.

The Socceroos will play two international warm-up clashes in Brazil ahead of their World Cup opener against Chile on June 13.

The Croatian Football Federation website appeared to confirm the fixture, however a Football Federation Australia (FFA) spokesman told AAP, while almost over the line, the deal was not yet done.

The FFA is hoping to confirm the fixture in coming days.

“We are in advanced negotiations with Croatia as well as some other nations about matches against the Socceroos in the lead-up to the World Cup,” the spokesman said.

“But the match is not yet confirmed.”

The Croatian FA website reported the fixture as a certainty.

“Croatia and Australia will play a friendly match on 6 June 2014 in Brazil, which will be the final game for both national sides before the World Cup,” the website said.

“The venue will be confirmed at a later date.”

Boasting the likes of Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric, Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic and a host of English Premier League stars in their line-up, Croatia will provide a stern test for the Socceroos.

It is the first time the two nations will meet since the dramatic 2-2 draw in Stuttgart at the 2006 World Cup when Harry Kewell’s decisive late equaliser clinched Australia a berth in the second round for the first and only time.

Croatia play the opening game of the tournament against hosts Brazil in Sao Paulo, a day before Australia meet Chile in Cuiaba.

The Socceroos will then face footballing heavyweights the Netherlands (June 18) and reigning world champions Spain (June 23).

The Socceroos’ next clash will be their friendly on March 5 in Europe with the FFA yet to confirm an opponent.

Australia will then play their farewell game at Sydney’s OIympic stadium in late May before departing for Brazil.

While Scotland and Sweden were initially touted as options, with the Croatia match on the cards, it looks likely Ange Postecoglou’s side will face a non-European team in the send-off match.

A group of 73 whales have stranded on Farewell Spit at the top of New Zealand’s South Island and 20 have  died.

Whales have been stranding at the spit for days – 68 were  stranded on Saturday night, seven of which were dead, the  Department of Conservation (DOC) says.

The whales had floated during the overnight high tide and moved  further along the spit.

A total of 73 whales were found on Sunday morning spread over  about 1.6km.

Rangers were still assessing how many had died, DOC said.

DOC rangers and Project Jonah and other volunteers are working  to keep the whales as comfortable as possible. They are being kept  wet with buckets of sea water.

DOC is appealing for people with wetsuits to help refloat the  whales at Sunday’s 12.17pm high tide.

Anyone who can help is asked to be at Triangle Flat by 11am.

‘As well as bringing wetsuits if they have them, people should  bring warm clothing, water, food and all the gear they need.’

A total of 53 animals, including 13 dead, were discovered at  Triangle Flat at the base of the spit on Saturday morning.

DOC staff and volunteers refloated 40 on the high tide, but  those whales and others beached again.

The whales are believed to be part of the same pod seen off  Taupata Point, south of Farewell Spit, on Tuesday. Later that day,  13 whales stranded on the spit – none of which survived.

Pilot whales regularly become stranded on Farewell Spit. On  January 6, 39 whales stranded there and died or were put down.
