Liverpool executives have opened talks with Inter Milan over a deal to sign Mateo Kovacic.

According to reports in Italy, representatives from the Fenway Sports Group flew to Italy for discussions with the Serie A club over a £12.5million deal for the midfielder.

Kovacic has been a long-standing target for Brendan Rodgers as he seeks a replacement for Steven Gerrard, who left Anfield at the end of last season to join LA Galaxy.

The Croatian international has reportedly already been the subject of a £7.5million bid which was rejected, but Liverpool are now ready to improve on that offer.

The 21 year-old, who has 19 caps for Croatia, started his career with Dinamo Zagreb in 2010 before joining Inter. He has eight goals in 96 games for Inter.
