Επιστολή Ταμβάκη στον πρωθυπουργό Αλέξη Τσίπρα

Ο επίτιμος πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας Αλεξάνδρειας και πρώην πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Απόδημου Ελληνισμού, Στέφανος Ταμβάκης, έστειλε την ακόλουθη επιστολή στον Έλληνα πρωθυπουργό:

«Εξοχότατε κύριε Πρωθυπουργέ

Αγαπητέ κύριε Τσίπρα,

Με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον και συγκίνηση παρακολούθησα στην τηλεόραση, τις προγραμματικές σας δηλώσεις

Αισθάνθηκα υπερήφανος ως Έλληνας, που έχω γεννηθεί και ζω στο εξωτερικό, στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αίγυπτου

Όσο η ώρα περνούσε, παρακολουθώντας να αναλύετε και να τεκμηριώνετε με ποιο τρόπο η Ελλάδα μας, η Πατρίδα μας, θα ξεπεράσει τις «Συμπληγάδες Πέτρες» και το πως o υπερήφανος Ελληνικός λαός θα πάψει πια να τρομάζει, από τους «τους Λαιστρυγόνες και τους Κύκλωπες», αισθάνθηκα έντονα την αγωνία, τον δυναμισμό την θέληση και την συγκίνηση σας, να διαχέονται από την άψυχη οθόνη της τηλεόρασης προς όλους εμάς που σας βλέπαμε και σας ακούγαμε.

Αισθάνθηκα τις μεγάλες προσπάθειες που χρειάζονται από εσάς από την Κυβέρνηση και από το πολιτικά Κόμματα, που πρέπει να γίνουν, για να υλοποιήσετε τους δύσκολους άλλα πρακτικούς, «γήινους» στόχους, που θα μπορέσουν να αναμοχλεύσουν και να βγάλουν την Ελλάδα, τον λαό μας, μέσα από το οικονομικό και όχι μόνο, τέλμα που βρίσκετε τα τελευταία χρόνια.

Στην προσπάθεια σας αυτή, θα ήθελα να σκεφτείτε ότι έχετε δίπλα σας και άλλους συμμάχους, συναντιλήπτορες και συναγωνιστές. Έχετε δίπλα σας ακόμα μια Ελλάδα.

Να είστε βέβαιος ότι όλοι εμείς που ζούμε εκτός Ελλάδος, αγαπούμε και πονούμε την χώρα μας, το ίδιο με εσάς, ασχέτως χρωμάτων και κομμάτων, ασχέτως πιστεύω και κομματικών πεποιθήσεων και για αυτό είμαστε έτοιμοι να βρεθούμε έμπρακτα δίπλα σας, σε ότι μας χρειαστείτε.

Αξιοποιήστε μας, αγαπητέ κύριε Πρωθυπουργέ.

Αξιοποιήστε μας και δραστηριοποιήστε μας, βγάζοντάς μας από την «χώρα των λωτοφάγων και της λήθης» που κάποιες προηγούμενες κυβερνήσεις (άθελα τους;), μας τοποθέτησαν.

Μπορούμε και πρέπει να προσφέρομε για την Μητέρα Πατρίδα, ιδιαίτερα αυτό το συγκεκριμένο χρονικό διάστημα, που και τον πιο μικρό και τον πιο ασήμαντο άλλα αληθινό πατριώτη Έλληνα χρειάζεται δίπλα της η Ελλάδα.

Είμαστε εδώ. Είμαστε παντού. Έξι περίπου εκατομμύρια Έλληνες σκορπισμένοι άλλα και ταυτόχρονα ενωμένοι, ζούμε και δραστηριοποιούμαστε επιτυχώς σε όλο τον κόσμο

Μπορείτε να μας αξιοποιήσετε, αρκεί εσείς να πράξετε το διαφορετικό, το τολμηρό.

Περιμένουμε από εσάς την σύσταση ενός Υπουργείου Απόδημου- Απανταχού Ελληνισμού, την αναβάθμιση του Γενικού Διευθυντή της Γενικής Γραμματείας Απόδημου Ελληνισμού σε Γενικό Γραμματέα, την υλοποίηση του από χρόνια ανεκπλήρωτου αιτήματος μας, την ψήφιση του νόμου για την επιστολική Ψήφο των ομογενών και βεβαίως την επαναλειτουργία του Συμβουλίου Αποδήμου Ελληνισμού (ΣΑΕ)

Ο Κ.Π. Καβάφης με τον δικό του τρόπο «αποχαιρέτησε την Αλεξάνδρεια», ενώ εσείς και είμαι βέβαιος για αυτό, δίπλα σας μπορείτε να την επανατοποθετήσετε αυτήν την «Αλεξάνδρεια», μαζί με όλες τις άλλες οπού Γης «Αλεξάνδρειες», που περιμένουν ανυπόμονα να συμμετέχουν, να υποστηρίξουν και να τοποθετήσουν το μικρό τους λιθαράκι στην προσπάθεια σας αυτή, έτσι ώστε να γίνει προσπάθεια όχι μόνο του Ελληνικού Λαού, αλλά ολόκληρου του Ελληνικού Έθνους.

Με δύναμη, επιμονή και υπομονή σας εύχομαι να οπλιστείτε «Περιμένοντας τους Βαρβάρους»

Melbourne Greek schools are starkly different to what many in the community experienced 10 or 20 years ago. Even with a new wave of migration, Greek schools are changing tack and embracing multiculturalism.

Twenty years ago, you might have felt a little out of place at one of Melbourne’s booming Greek high schools if your last name ended in Smith or Jones.
Most first generation Greek Australians were sent to these schools to maintain their culture, faith, language, and traditions, and of course mingle with students who were brought up with the same mentality.

While education was a priority for all of these schools, there was enough emphasis on tradition and culture to make these schools starkly different from your everyday government school.

That defined them for decades, but now, their identity is starkly different.

Their focus is now on delivering a multicultural and global syllabus that prepares their students to enter a world quite different from what their parents met when graduating.

For many schools, the change came when they acknowledged they needed a complete re-branding.

Both St John’s Greek Orthodox College and Oakleigh Greek Orthodox School dropped the ‘Greek Orthodox’ part of their name and in turn started marketing themselves as a school open to all.

The change was a direct reaction to dwindling enrolments.

Principal of Oakleigh Grammar Mark Robertson says the school could have benefited more if the decision to change tack came earlier.

“There’s no doubt that if those changes had come in five years earlier then we’d be in an even stronger position now,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“Back 10 years ago it was primarily a Greek Orthodox background [student] population and today at Oakleigh Grammar we have close to 25 different backgrounds represented in the school.”

In his four years as principal, he’s seen enrolments jump up from 445 to 520. The school has worked hard teaching its students how to navigate a truly global community.

“We’ve embraced internationalism as the theme of the school, our global outlook is extensive, we’re preparing people for a global world, not a microscopic view of a small community,” he says.

“The parents themselves are embracing diversity and the reason for that is that their children will be graduating into a very multicultural, diverse society.”

Dr Vivianne Nikou, principal of Alphington Grammar, says parents have become much more savvy in choosing their children’s schools, after they themselves didn’t get much say in the matter.

“They’re more discerning about education, they ask more questions and they’re not just prepared to go to the closest school,” she tells Neos Kosmos.

“They are interested in results.”

Parents’ changing concerns also forced many schools to lift their game. St Johns College was struggling to keep itself in vogue with Greek Australian parents after its results weren’t strong.

“Three years ago the school was 430th of the 530 schools in Victoria in VCE results, but in three years we’ve managed to raise it to the top 100,” principal Harry Ladopoulos tells Neos Kosmos.

“This is rebuilding trust in the school.”

Mr Ladopoulos also believes the change in student population is down to the fact that the Greek community itself is changing.

Gone are the days that the college was surrounded by Greek residents.

“These schools used to be held up by the Greek population that was in the area,” he says.

“Now the children of these parents have moved to different areas and now we’re seeing that our students aren’t just from Preston or Northcote, they’re from Doncaster, Keilor East, from all areas.”

Alphington Grammar principal, Vivianne Nikou has also seen the shift first hand, and says the school has benefited a lot from the influx of different cultures.

“40 per cent of the students are not Greek. They’ve made a conscious decision to come to a school like this,” she says.

“It automatically changes the flavour of the school. They have chosen it because of the values and the love of a multicultural school.”

Of the Greek students attending St Johns, Oakleigh Grammar and Alphington Grammar teach a student population where more than 90 per cent of its students have a language background other than English.

Of the 90 per cent, around 70 per cent are still Greek, showing that the schools have been able to keep Greek students coming back in recent years.

Those numbers are also buoyed by a changing demographic in the Greek community.

Thanks to an influx of newly arrived Greek migrants hoping to escape the economic crisis, lots of Greek schools have been welcoming migrant students from Greece.

The Greek schools in Melbourne have proven the best option to integrate newly arrived children into a new life in a new country while still keeping traditions and language alive.

All three Melbourne Greek schools mentioned in this article have opened their doors to newly arrived Greek students.

Oakleigh Grammar has taken in around 60 newly arrived students since 2009, the largest of any Greek School in Melbourne.

The school’s board says it was a conscious decision to offer free tuition to newly arrived Greek’s for the first year to help the families through the major transition.

While the numbers of newly arrived Greek students aren’t at the highs they were in 2009 (only seven new students are enrolled for this year at Oakleigh Grammar), the schools have made huge advances in building the infrastructure to deal with migrant students.

St John’s is embarking on a 10-year building master plan to renew its facilities, while Alphington Grammar takes its year 9 and 10 students overseas to Asia and Europe for an international trek.

What these projects hope to achieve, say their principals, is to keep their schools competitive and globally minded in an ever changing Australia.

Το φαράγγι του Γεκουλσαργκλουφούρ έχει βάθος 100 μέτρα και μήκος 28 χιλιόμετρα (Πηγή: Edwin Baynes)

Το όνομά του μπορεί να είναι γλωσσοδέτης, όμως η ιστορία του ακόμα πιο περίεργη: το φαράγγι του Γεκουλσαργκλουφούρ στην Ισλανδία, στο οποίο βρίσκεται ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους καταρράκτες της Ευρώπης, δημιουργήθηκε σε διάστημα λίγων ημερών από τερατώδεις πλημμύρες.

Τα περισσότερα φαράγγια σχηματίζονται από διαβρωτικές διαδικασίες που διαρκούν εκατομμύρια χρόνια -το νερό των ποταμών σταδιακά διαλύει το γύρω πέτρωμα και κατεβάζει την κοίτη όλο και χαμηλότερα μέσα στη Γη.

Στο φαράγγι του Γεκουλσαργκλουφούρ της βορειοανατολικής Ισλανδίας η διαδικασία επιταχύνθηκε δραματικά λόγω των πολυάριθμων ρωγμών στο βασαλτικό πέτρωμα της περιοχής.

Ερευνητές του Πανεπιστημίου του Εδιμβούργου χρονολόγησαν το φαράγγι εξετάζοντας ισότοπα του ήλιου που σχηματίζονται όταν τα πετρώματα έρθουν στην επιφάνεια και εκτεθούν στις εισερχόμενες κοσμικές ακτίνες.

Η εικόνα που προκύπτει προκαλεί έκπληξη: το Γεκουλσαργκλουφούρ πρέπει να σχηματίστηκε σε τρία επιμέρους στάδια λόγω σαρωτικών πλημμυρών που συνέβησαν πριν από 9, πριν από 5 και πριν από 2 χιλιάδες χρόνια.

Οι πλημμύρες προκλήθηκαν από την ενεργοποίηση ηφαιστείων πάνω στα οποία υπάρχουν παγετώνες.  Διήρκεσαν μόλις μερικές μέρες η καθεμία, ήταν όμως αρκετά ισχυρές για να παρασύρουν γιγάντια βράχια και να σκάψουν τον υποκείμενο βράχο σε βάθος έως και 2 χιλιομέτρων κάθε φορά.

Λόγω της διάβρωσης, το βάθος του φαραγγιού φτάνει σήμερα τα 100 μέτρα και το μήκος του τα 28 χιλιόμετρα.

Στο φαράγγι του Γεκουλσαργκλουφούρ βρίσκεται σήμερα ο καταρράκτης Ντέτιφος, ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους της Ευρώπης. Σύμφωνα με τη νέα μελέτη, η οποία δημοσιεύεται στην ανοιχτή επιθεώρηση PNAS, ο Ντέτιφος δεν βρισκόταν πάντα στην ίδια θέση: κάθε πλημμυρικό επεισόδιο έσπρωξε τον καταρράκτη πιο ψηλά στη ροή του ποταμού κατά περίπου δύο χιλιόμετρα.

Να καλλιεργήσει το έδαφος προκειμένου στο Eurogroup της 16^ης Φεβρουαρίου να υπάρξει συμφωνία επί ενός προγράμματος – γέφυρα θα επιχειρήσει σήμερα Τετάρτη ο υπουργός Οικονομικών Γιάνης Βαρουφάκης στο άτυπο συμβούλιο υπουργών Οικονομικών της ζώνης της ευρώ που ξεκινά στις 18:30 (ώρα Ελλάδος) στις Βρυξέλλες.
Τόσο ο κ. Βαρουφάκης, όσο και ο πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Οικονομικών Εμπειρογνώμων του υπουργείου Οικονομικών Γιώργος Χουλιαράκης έχουν συντάξει σειρά προτάσεων τόσο για το χρονικό «μήκος» της γέφυρας που ζητά η Ελλάδα, όσο και για τα μέτρα που είναι διατεθειμένη να λάβει η χώρα για όσο θα βρίσκεται στο πρόγραμμα αυτό.

Ο αντιπρόεδρος της κυβέρνησης Γιάννης Δραγασάκης μιλώντας χθες το βράδυ στη Βουλή περιέγραψε τα τουλάχιστον τέσσερα σημεία που πρέπει να περιλαμβάνει η μεταβατική συμφωνία. Όπως είπε θα πρέπει να προβλέπει:

• Επέκταση της δανειακής σύμβασης και εξασφάλιση ρευστότητας για όσο διάστημα η συμφωνία θα διαρκεί.
• Ένα σύνολο μεταρρυθμίσεων και άλλων μέτρων πολιτικής που θα συμφωνηθούν από κοινού.
• Μια συμφωνία για τη διαδικασία και τον τρόπο διαπραγμάτευσης του χρέους, είτε σε πολυμερή είτε και σε διμερή βάση.
• Μια συναντίληψη για τους όρους μετάβασης από το παλιό στο καινούργιο, από το μνημονιακό καθεστώς στη μεταμνημονιακή εποχή.

Με δύο προτάσεις

Η Ελλάδα θα θέσει προς συζήτηση δύο βασικές προτάσεις. Η πρώτη προβλέπει ένα πρόγραμμα – γέφυρα έως τον Ιούνιο ύψους 10 δισ. ευρώ, το οποίο θα χρηματοδοτηθεί από την επιστροφή των κερδών του ευρωσυστήματος επί των ελληνικών ομολόγων που ανέρχονται στα 1,9 δισ. ευρώ, αλλά και από επιπλέον εκδόσεις εντόκων γραμματίων ύψους έως 8 δισ. ευρώ.

Η δεύτερη πρόταση – την οποία η Ελλάδα υποστηρίζει με μεγαλύτερη θέρμη λόγω των λήξεων ομολόγων του Ιουλίου και Αυγούστου- προβλέπει ένα πρόγραμμα – γέφυρα έως τον Αύγουστο 2015. Το σενάριο αυτό προβλέπει την καταβολή της δόσης των 7,2 δισ. ευρώ που αντιστοιχεί στην πέμπτη – εκκρεμούσα – αξιολόγηση της τρόικας, με την ελληνική κυβέρνηση να εφαρμόζει το 70% των μη τοξικών μεταρρυθμίσεων του μνημονίου, αλλά και μια νέα εργαλειοθήκη του ΟΟΣΑ.

Ο παράγοντας Λαγκάρντ

Παρόντες στην κρίσιμη έκτακτη συνεδρίαση του Eurogroup θα είναι  η διευθύντρια του Διεθνούς Νομισματικού Ταμείου, Κριστίν Λαγκάρντ, και ο πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας, Μάριο Ντράγκι.

Ο υπουργός Οικονομικών Γιάνης Βαρουφάκης επενδύει πολιτικά και οικονομικά στην τεχνογνωσία και την αντίληψη του ΔΝΤ για το πώς πρέπει να αντιμετωπίζονται τα προβλήματα και σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες του in.gr θα επιζητήσει την υποστήριξη της Κριστίν Λαγκάρντ στο Eurogroup, τόσο στο θέμα της χορήγησης μεγαλύτερου δημοσιονομικού χώρου (fiscal space) προς την Ελλάδα, όσο και στο θέμα της διευθέτησης του χρέους.

Σημειώνεται ότι η κ. Λαγκάρντ σε πρόσφατη συνέντευξή της στη γαλλική εφημερίδα Le Monde είχε αναφέρει πως η Ελλάδα πρέπει να σεβαστεί τους κανόνες της ευρωζώνης και ότι δεν μπορεί να ζητά ειδική μεταχείριση για το χρέος της. «Υπάρχουν εσωτερικοί κανόνες της Eυρωζώνης που πρέπει να γίνουν σεβαστοί. Δεν μπορούμε να κάνουμε ειδικές κατηγορίες για τη μια ή την άλλη χώρα», είχε δηλώσει.

Σύμφωνα με την ίδια, η Ελλάδα χρειάζεται ακόμη να υλοποιήσει σημαντικές μεταρρυθμίσεις στο ζήτημα του φοροεισπρακτικού μηχανισμού και στον ρυθμό απονομής Δικαιοσύνης. Αυτοί άλλωστε είναι σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες βασικοί τομείς στους οποίους εστιάζουν οι προτάσεις του οικονομικού επιτελείου της κυβέρνησης που θα κατατεθούν σήμερα στο Eurogroup.

Ο ρόλος της Κριστίν Λαγκάρντ, του Μάριο Ντράγκι και του Επιτρόπου Πιέρ Μοσκοβισί είναι σημαντικός, καθώς εάν συνταχθούν καθολικά με την άποψη του Γερμανού υπουργού Οικονομικών Βολφγκανγκ Σόιμπλε ότι δεν υπάρχει πλάνο να συζητηθεί μια νέα συμφωνία ή να δοθεί στην Ελλάδα περισσότερος χρόνος, τότε η διαπραγμάτευση θα κινδυνέψει να βρεθεί σε αδιέξοδο και οι πιθανότητες για μια συμφωνία στο Eurogroup της 16^ης Φεβρουαρίου θα περιορισθούν.

Ο/Η νικητής του περσινού διαγωνισμού τραγουδιού της Eurovision

Η Αυστραλία είναι η νέα προσθήκη στο τηλεοπτικό μουσικό διαγωνισμό της Eurovision, που φέτος συμπληρώνει τα 60 του χρόνια!

Δεν είναι, βέβαια, η πρώτη χώρα που γεωγραφικά δεν ανήκει στην Ευρώπη, αλλά συμμετέχει στο σόου, αλλά είναι σίγουρα η πλέον μακρινή, αφού ανήκει κιόλας σε διαφορετικό ημισφαίριο…

Το γεγονός πάντως φαίνεται πως δεν στάθηκε εμπόδιο, καθώς η λατρεία των Αυστραλών είχε ήδη εκδηλωθεί τα τελευταία χρόνια, με ειδική δημοσιογραφική αποστολή που κάλυπτε το γεγονός και live μετάδοση φυσικά, με ρεκόρ τηλεθέασης.

Έτσι, η Αυστραλία θα είναι η 40ή χώρα που θα λάβει μέρος στον διαγωνισμό, που θα διεξαχθεί στις 19, 21 και 23 Μαΐου στην Βιέννη της Αυστρίας, την πατρίδα της Κοντσίτα που κέρδισε πέρυσι.

Greek Australian Victoria Kokkinos is ten years old, and has been identified by industry professionals as “one of the best junior singers in the country”. Victoria will be singing at the grand final of the FastTrack singing competition (junior division), to be held on the 14th of February this year, after winning her semi-final. FastTrack is the largest non-televised singing competition in the country.

“She has a ‘flair’ and ‘feel’ for music beyond her years. Her intensity and performance level is incredible. Big, big, big hit prediction, her vocal range is incredible and she also sings in whistle tone,” says David Jaanz, of The David Jaanz School of Singing, comparing Victoria to a young Gabriella Cilmi.

When Victoria won the 2014 Kingston Curtain Call, the comment from the judging table was: “That was the best performance we have ever seen from a 10-year-old in our years in the industry.”

Her father, Arthur Kokkinos, was a musician who played in Greek bands for about 17 years.

“Victoria was always exposed to music, I would play the guitar and her mother would sing to her,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“We noticed early on that she had a talent for music and would love listening. When she was two, we realised that Victoria could hold a tune and sing a melody in time.”

Victoria started singing in competitions about 18 months ago. The last 12 months she has been coached by Lynn Jaanz (who is also Greek) from the David Jaanz School of Singing. Since then, she has dramatically improved her skill, and her ability to achieve high pitch notes has really accelerated. Victoria over the last 12 months has performed in competitions and festivals, with her achievements including winning Kingston Curtain Call’s Junior division – under 14 and a third place in Ballarat’s Got Talent (Open age group).

Victoria averages two performances per month and is currently booked out until the start of April, with future performances including the Hume Council – Relay for Life, a Box Hill Fundraiser for local radio station 94.1 and featuring on a Wednesday night at Beavs Bar in Geelong, with some prospects at local music festivals throughout the metropolitan area.

She also plays the piano, while excelling in other artistic areas such as drawing and sketching. Her main focus is music though, her piano studies and of course school. Victoria has written several songs – one of which she performed live last year for the first time. The song She Has discusses the issue of “self-belief” and the negative influences that hold us back from achieving our dreams. She wrote it one night after some kids at her school told her she couldn’t make it as a singer. The song talks about a girl who stopped believing in her dreams and struggled; eventually her belief returned and she flew again.

“Victoria has set certain goals in her life and one of those goals is to be signed to a record label and make and perform music that is enjoyed by people all over the world,” Mr Kokkinos adds.

“She loves nothing more than being on stage and performing for people. The bigger the stage and the audience, the better.”

It seems that Victoria knows what she wants and she is committed to getting it. For a ten-year-old to have such clarity, drive and purpose is rare indeed.

“We have raised Victoria with the morals and beliefs of our Greek heritage and she is proud of her Greek roots,” her father explains.

“I would love to sing Greek music and this is something I want to start doing this year,” says young Victoria Kokkinos. “I love making people happy and
entertaining them. Singing helps me express my feelings.”

What is most impressive about Victoria is how truly comfortable she feels on stage. “The more I sing the more at home I feel,” she says.
For her parents, there is no better feeling than seeing Victoria on stage singing and connecting with the audience.

“I can’t explain how proud we are of her, her achievements, tenaciousness, drive and creativity, while she grows and matures into a strong individual,” her father declares.

“I love when she learns a song and then makes it her own – she is creating her own brand. There have been many tears shed whilst we watch her perform.”

Her father believes that Victoria is a very mature ten-year-old, who has experienced both disappointment and elation during her short singing career, therefore able to handle the early media exposure without her delicate personality being affected. Her parents are always by her side, supporting and protecting her.

“Initially she found it hard when things didn’t go her way, but through that she has grown and matured,” Mr Kokkinos says.

“She learns from both the good and the bad experiences and has become a very resilient little girl. She is well grounded and focused on her music and entertaining her audience while enjoying herself.”

Little Miss Kokkinos says her ambition is to become “a world-wide recording artist and be the best singer in the world”. Neos Kosmos wishes her good luck.

*Victoria has been interviewed by Vincent Burkhart (US radio host) and sung live over radio in the USA after coming runner up in the Music Matters International Quest. She received the President’s Choice award at the Stars of the West singing competition in Brimbank Rotary Club and co-hosted the local radio show, Music Matters. Victoria was also the youngest performer in the top level of the final year showcases at David Jaanz School of Singing, while she took part in the 2013 Hairspray musical as well as 2012’s musical version of Annie, at the July Michelle Slater Performing Arts. Victoria also appeared in Shae McCormack’s Old Man North short film.

Victoria attends The David Jaanz School of Singing, the biggest and most successful school in Australasia, operating for more than two decades, with over 1,000 students nationally, including the highest-selling artist ever in Australia, Delta Goodrem.

Manny Stavropoulos earned his place in Australian poker history and first place the 2015 APPT Aussie Millions $10,600 No Limit Hold-Em event early this month.

Considered the largest poker tournament in the southern hemisphere, Stavropoulos claimed victory over 648 contestants and secured his first major title. His winnings all up? A whopping $1,385,500 and 2,100 Card Player player of the year points which moved him instantly to second place in the player of the year rankings.

The battle was not a easy one for the Melburnian. He faced seven other opponents in the final and fought a hard battle against German poker player and runner-up, Lennart Uphoff.

Stavropoulos began the final at fifth chip position and with the same number of chips as Uphoff, but eventually outsmarted his opponent to take home the millions.
