‘A laundry list of own goals’: Tony Abbott certain to lose job to Malcolm Turnbull, says Lisa Wilkinson

untitled

Malcolm Turnbull’s widely-lauded performance on the ABC’s Q&A last night did little to defuse tensions over the Liberal party leadership and fellow panellist Lisa Wilkinson says he is “absolutely” primed to take over from Tony Abbott.

Wilkinson sat alongside the Communications Minister as he refused to rule out a future challenge to Mr Abbott’s tenure as prime minister while deftly handling questions surrounding recent crises within the party.

Detailing Mr Abbott’s “laundry list of own goals”, the TODAY host said she felt the prime minister was no chance of making it to the next election as party leader.

“Tony Abbott was a very effective opposition leader,” Wilkinson said on TODAY this morning.

“He made it to the prime minister’s position but I think the problem [he] has is he’s just been making so many mistakes.

“There’s been so many situations where he’s just put his foot in it.”

When asked directly by 9NEWS Finance Editor Ross Greenwood if Mr Turnbull would lead the party to the polls, Wilkinson replied, “absolutely. No question.”

Last night, Mr Turnbull said he had not been consulted on the sudden decision to axe veteran MP Philip Ruddock as Chief Party Whip.

“Tony is the one who has to explain it,” he said.

“He is the boss. He is the captain, he can make a captain’s call.”

Mr Turnbull has publicly supported Mr Abbott since being deposed as leader of the Liberal Party in 2009.

Wilkinson said while Mr Turnbull played his cards close to his chest, his leadership ambitions remained obvious.

“I think he was being a little cautious,” Wilkinson said.

“He would have known everybody was hanging on his every word to see if he was going to ‘go’ Tony Abbott.

“He never ‘went’ him, he chose his words carefully but the message was clear.”

Mr Turnbull also delivered an impassioned plea to Indonesian president Joko Widodo to spare the lives of Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the Bali Nine ringleaders on death row.

“It is the sign of the strongest love and the greatest mercy when you extend it to those who least deserve it,” he said directly to camera.

“It is not a sign of weakness … to have a bigger love, a greater mercy than any of their crimes.

Melbourne Victory’s Kosta Barbarouses has lost respect for Sydney FC’s Sebastian Ryall following controversial penalty

In-form Melbourne Victory winger Kosta Barbarouses said he has lost respect for Sebastian Ryall and queried Sydney FC’s culture following the defender’s controversial penalty on the weekend.

Ryall fell to the ground on Saturday night and earned a spot kick during the Sky Blues’ 3-3 draw with the Victory in what was a case of “blatant simulation”, according to Barbarouses, who was still seething about it on Tuesday morning.

“You lose a bit of respect for him,” Barbarouses said of Ryall, who cheekily flicked Gui Finkler on the back of the head immediately after being awarded the penalty.

“His reaction wasn’t great as well, so hopefully karma will come around but that’s out of our hands and it’s something that they have to deal in their culture of their team, not ours.”

Barbarouses said Ryall should have come clean on Saturday night and told referee Strebre Delovski that the incident didn’t warrant a penalty.

“There’s going be instances in the box where you feel a slight nudge or you’ve been clipped a little bit where you’re going to fall down to try and maybe make the decision easier,” Barbarouses said. “But that was a blatant simulation from my eyes and that’s got to be stopped as well.”

Barbarouses was adamant that video reviews of decisions should be introduced to assist referees in those situations.

“If they can get it going and make the decision within 20 to 30 seconds, there’s going to be stoppages with arguments and stuff like with decisions anyway so why not,” the 24-year-old said.

“I’m sure if he [Delovski] looked at the big screen in the stadium he would’ve reversed it, but that’s not going to happen.”

Barbarouses believed the standard of A-League referees was not good enough but that it would improve if the officiators were made full-time employees.

The Victory have been on the wrong end of refereeing decisions on more than one occasion this campaign and Barbarouses said it was helping the team foster an “us against the world” mentality as they strive for the championship.

“I’d rather go on and win the league with decisions going against us than having everything handed to us,” Barbarouses said.

“Everyone backs us as title favourites or a team that’s playing some of the best football but when things don’t go your way, it only makes you want to work harder.”

The Victory’s next engagement is with the Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

And while most of the build-up will surround star striker Besart Berisha’s return to his former club, assuming he isn’t suspended for allegedly making offensive gestures to Sydney fans, it will also be a homecoming of sorts for Barbarouses, who played in the Roar’s 2010-11 championship side.

“It’s obviously a special occasion for me as well because I had a great year there and we achieved so much in that year that I was there,” he said.

“The fans over there have always been great to me and it’s not as publicised as when ‘Bes’ comes back into town so I’m happy to fall under the radar and just appreciate the moment and the game.”

Katsidis comeback: behind the gloves

Katsidis comeback: behind the gloves

                                        Michael Katsidis in the ring.

Michael ‘The Great’ Katsidis’ haymaker up for next bout.

The sport of professional boxing is generally very hyped up, with a lot of debate centred around it. However, serious fighters won’t talk themselves up, but will keep in mind that actions speak louder than words, showing respect to their opponents. You won’t see these fighters in the media when they have no game to prepare for. They prefer to remain within their comfort zone; in the gym, training, preparing and calculating their next battle. Hence, it wasn’t an easy task to get Michael Katsidis to talk about his so-called ‘comeback’.

“The word comeback keeps coming about when I am being discussed lately, but I never left boxing. I never will.

“Talk is cheap when the bell rings,” says Australia’s long-time top-rated three-times World Champion Lightweight Professional Boxer – Michael Katsidis.

“A true gentleman of the sport never speaks out of school and remains focused entirely on the job.”

From a very young age, Katsidis took the hardest fights against the best fighters in his division, from all over the world, believing that he was destined to be a world champion boxer. After 20 solid years of extreme hard work, sacrifice, determination, dedication and most of all patience, Michael Katsidis keeps getting back up.

“I have endured many challenges in my professional boxing career in and out of the ring, but I have overcome every single one without a doubt,” Katsidis tells Neos Kosmos.

“I hold no regrets and just keep pushing forward, as I would rather be carried from a ring in pieces knowing I didn’t take the easy fight and gave all I had.”

Katsidis was in the media spotlight, though, not so long ago, in a court hearing that was literally broadcast all over the world, following a charge of burglary.

The case was dismissed as there was no evidence pointing to his involvement.

“To me, the media just wanted to take advantage of the story to increase views and readership based on an allegation,” he says.

“The whole thing was a waste of time and took preposterous dimensions even though neither myself nor my team ever commented on the matter.”

According to Michael, there was nothing to say.

“I do not speak of what I don’t know, so how could I speak of these allegations? I knew the truth would come to light eventually, even though it wouldn’t be an interesting read to discover I was training and boxing as opposed to committing burglary.”

Knowing that this could potentially ruin Michael’s career, especially with a very important international fight coming up and the possibility of it not going ahead due to bad press, Michael pushed through, moved to the UK and immediately went into training camp to continue fight preparations.

“I will be involved in boxing until I can no longer physically fight,” he says defiantly.

“This is my life; I train daily, get offers to fight in the ring every day, but for me it’s about strategy now,” he explains.

Katsidis knows for a fact that his next few fights need to count more than ever, so that he can get back into the Top 10 in the world rankings and cross-paw his way to another world title win.

“I believe that I am capable of doing it all over again, and I am prepared as always to put in the hard work to get the job done,” he says.

So what is next for Michael Katsidis? Another fight on Friday 20 March, at the Melbourne Pavilion.

“I cannot say too much yet but what I will say is that I will be bringing war as always,” he says, bursting with confidence, having put the buckle memories from his last fight aside.

“The last fight I had, that was a setback gone and passed.

“You win some, you lose some. But all in all I’m a good fighter and my trainer is very confident in my ability, too,” he adds.

“I believe my strength is a gift that, along with seeing people happy and pleased with what I do, keeps me going.”

He is, after all, looked upon as one of the most crowd-pleasing boxers of recent times.

“I enjoy pleasing my fans, but truth be told, I never set out to be an entertaining fighter and put on an image. I’m a professional,” he confesses.

“It is simply how I fight; the Greek way. Molon Lave!”

Katsidis makes sure his Greek heritage shows in every fight. He even has a tattoo on his back depicting the Vergina Sun, the symbol of the Greek state of Macedonia, from where he hails.

“My heritage has always been of great importance and pride to me, that is why my tattoo was done, ” he stresses.

“I honour that heritage and my ancestors with my Corinthian helmet and I am inspired by the great original warriors of Greece.”

The fighter acknowledges the support he has been receiving throughout the years from the Greek community as a whole.

“I fight for them as much as I do for myself, my family and Australia.

“One of my proudest moments was being honoured for my achievements in the town from which my family originates in Greece,” Katsidis goes on to add.

The fighter recently moved to Melbourne with his family, to be part of the largest Greek population outside of Greece.

“This is where my daughter’s life is going to be. I’m here because it’s like a little Greece.”

As a fighter though, training itself drives him to get in the gym each morning and perform better than the day before, to develop and change his style – which doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a building process that may take up to a year.

“I’m not a stupid man. If I felt that my health was in danger any more so than for the average guy who goes to work every day and goes to the pub every weekend, I wouldn’t do it,” he insists.

“My daughter is an enormous drive in life, as she is constantly in my mind and I want her to be proud when she’s old enough to understand my choices.”
Katsidis’ choice to fight again has been a subject of debate several times this year, with many commentators saying he is a palooka, unfit for the ring.

“I am not unrealistic about my age, but age is simply a number,” he says.

“My body is stronger than it has ever been, I am fitter, more focused, and more hungry for fights than I have been in years; I know, as does my trainer, that the best fights are still in me.”

Katsidis insists the media should stop looking at the ‘pen and paper’ and start looking at the positives instead, as Markus Beyer, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are older, but still able to take anyone down.

“I am open to constructive criticism, but what is constructive about certain people saying I should retire because, what, I lost my last fight?

“There’s no constructive criticism at all in this argument,” he underlines.

“I won a world title fight in just my third fight in June since I made a comeback in 2013. How do you win a world title in June when you’re meant to be retiring?”

Stepping out of the ring seems like a long way off for Michael and he feels he has the perfect fit for the long haul.

“I’m very happy training with Ray Giles and Julian Holland, both very well-respected all over Australia,” he says.

“Not to mention how happy I am to be eating ice-cream all day.”

Michael has been trying something new as well, apart from changing his fighting style. An Aussie-made gluten-free, fat-free, lactose and sugar-free ice-
cream protein.

With his next fight on 20 March in Melbourne, he is definitely going the distance.

“I’m on combination mode,” he says.

“I can finally give back to the large Greek family I have here which has been supporting my moves from the get-go.”

Good luck Michael.

Xenophon: Abbott’s failure lies in policies

Xenophon: Abbott's failure lies in policies

Senator Nick Xenophon in Melbourne last week. Photo: Mike Sweet.

On lunch break from a Senate inquiry hearing in Melbourne Town Hall, Nick Xenophon is in a relaxed mood.

The lack of parmesan available to add to his pasta in Brunetti’s cafe momentarily deflates his upbeat bearing, but – on what is due to become a big afternoon in Australian politics – this Senate big cheese takes it in his stride.

It’s the day two Liberal MPs will move the spill motion against PM Tony Abbott, though as Xenophon tucks into his tagliatelle, that’s an hour away. Meanwhile, the antipasti for our 20 minute conversation is the PM’s rapidly mounting troubles.

“The only way around the problem is for him to change his policies,” says the popular independent senator of Cypriot heritage between mouthfuls, “and I don’t know if he’s prepared to do that. To date he’s shown an ideological rigidity that concerns me.”

“As opposition leader Tony Abbott’s mantra was ‘trust in government’, in particular the broken promises of Julia Gillard and the carbon tax, and what happens? He gets into office and he breaks all his promises and people are sick of it.”

With crossbench support in the Senate critical for the Abbott government’s legislative agenda in its first 16 months, Xenophon has been at the centre of the storm – with the major parties regularly appealing for his support.

Close to independent senator John Madigan and with evolving ties to Jacqui Lambie and the Motoring Enthusiasts’ Ricky Muir, Xenophon’s position as a crossbench powerbroker has grown in recent months, particularly after Lambie’s defection from PUP.

The media’s hyperbole over the extent of this influence is something Xenophon says is way over the mark. Annointed ‘King of the Senate’ by some, he’s characteristically dismissive of such a moniker.

“I come from the political centre, if people come to me they know they can speak to me in confidence, and trust me, and I’m never going to breach that trust.

“To be called king of the Senate is embarrassing. Anyway, I’m a republican,” he quips.

Talking of republicans takes us back to the Liberal’s leadership problems. Asked to predict where the Liberals go next, Xenophon shares what must now be Australia’s most widely held view.

“It’s almost inconceivable that Tony Abbott will lead the Coalition in the next election in 2016,” he says, before adding, “I think they can do a lot worse than draft in Peter Costello.”

Volunteering a more likely scenario, Xenophon says Malcolm Turnbull or Julie Bishop will lead the Coalition after Tony Abbott’s eventual resignation.

“The problem is Turnbull believes in an emissions trading scheme, and the party’s against that, even though I think that is a sound policy, he’s politically vulnerable there.”

Above all, it’s the policies that the Coalition needs to transform – the personalities are secondary, says Xenophon, who maintains the Abbott government’s economic crusade to ensure Australia ‘lives within its means’ has been misdirected.

“They haven’t done it in an equitable way,” he says with no small degree of passion. “They’ve let some of the wealthiest people in the country get away untouched, but the single mum with three kids takes more of a hit than someone on $300,000 a year. How is that fair?”

With Nick due back on the Senate panel in the Yarra room in a few minutes we have time for one more topic: foreign affairs. He’s been following the situation in Greece with interest.

“The vote for SYRIZA is a stunning repudiation of the old politics,” says Xenophon.

Asked if he believes if Greece’s new government can live up to expectations and overturn the orthodoxy of austerity in the EU, he’s less sure.

“The people have spoken and that needs to be respected, but I think SYRIZA will be more pragmatic than ideological when it comes to tackling some of the problems.

“All of Europe is looking to see if Greece can pull it off. I wish them well. Greece has serious problems and they need to be tackled.”

A coffee is needed before Xenophon heads back to the Senate inquiry hearing on airports and aviation security, to grill airport authorities, the AFP and ASIO on what they’re doing to keep us safe.

We call into Starbucks. The South Australian senator asks for a takeaway flat white. “What name shall I put on that?” asks the young barista who doesn’t watch a lot of news.

Doesn’t everyone know who Nick Xenophon is by now?

Greek Financing Talks Break Down Amid Wide Gulf Over Bailout

BN-GZ028_eugree_M_20150216063722

Greece Rejects Extension of Bailout Under Terms Offered by Eurozone Finance Ministers

BRUSSELS—Talks among eurozone finance ministers over a new financing arrangement for Greece broke down abruptly Monday, demonstrating a wide gulf between Athens and its official creditors and triggering a period of heightened uncertainty about the country’s future inside the currency bloc.

The breakdown came after Greece rejected an extension of its current €240 billion ($272 billion) bailout program under the conditions being offered by other ministers, even after warnings that the country’s financial situation is deteriorating rapidly.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, oppose the terms of that rescue deal, which expires at the end of the month, saying they are hurting its economy and society.

If the bailout ends without some kind of new accord in place with the eurozone, the new left-wing Greek government will lose access to the rescue loans that have sustained it for almost five years, potentially leaving it unable to make debt repayments looming in March. That could, in the worst case, trigger a series of events that would force Greece out of the eurozone.

“The general feeling [among ministers] is still that the best way forward would be for the Greek authorities to seek an extension of the current program,” said Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch minister who presides over the regular meetings with his counterparts. “We simply need more time,” he added.

After the meeting, Mr. Varoufakis said he had been ready to request a four-month extension to the existing bailout, but not under the conditions that Mr. Dijsselbloem and the other ministers were offering. “Our only condition for doing this was that we should not be asked to impose measures that are clearly recessionary and clearly uncalled for in the state of humanitarian crisis we have in Greece,” he said.

In particular, Mr. Varoufakis said, he was unwilling to accept further reductions to the pension of low-income retirees and an increase in the value-added tax.

The rupture between Greece and the rest of the eurozone is a question of hard financial figures—but the confrontation has also exposed a deep cultural rift between the two sides.

The Greek government, led by the far-left Syriza party following a landslide election victory last month, has brought a confrontational style to the rule-bound and clubby meetings of eurozone finance ministers, not apparent even in the depths of the bloc’s financial crisis. It also, according to European officials, appears ready to court serious risks that other bailout recipients have shied away from.

“It’s not a bluff, because it’s the only option we have,” Mr. Varoufakis said of his government’s position after the meeting. “It’s plan A, there is no plan B.”

During the meeting, ministers and other officials tried to convince Greece that the risks of leaving its rescue program behind without a new financing deal are too big. Mario Draghi , the president of the European Central Bank, warned ministers that the situation of Greece’s banks was deteriorating, as citizens and businesses withdraw deposits and economic growth slows, according to an official present at Monday’s talks.

The official said that Mr. Draghi didn’t say when the ECB may cut off liquidity support from Greece’s own central bank, but “it was clear from what he said that this is becoming an issue.”

Ministers from several countries, meanwhile, complained that Greece had failed to show what steps it was prepared to take in return for continued aid, the official said.

As ministers were holding talks in Brussels, they received press reports of Greek officials in Athens rejecting a statement that had been prepared by Mr. Dijsselbloem earlier in the day. The statement committed Greece to seeking a six-month extension to its bailout deal, but giving it some leeway on the budget cuts and economic reforms it has to implement in return.

Greek officials in Athens called the proposals “absurd and unacceptable,” adding that “there can be no agreement [on new financing] today.”

“That contributed to the [already negative] atmosphere,” said the official present at the Brussels talks. Shortly after, ministers decided to end the meeting.

In a news conference, Mr. Dijsselbloem said finance ministers were ready to hold another round of talks Friday, provided that the Greek government commits to a number of principles set out by the ministers.

Those principles included a promise by the Greek government not to roll back unilaterally already-implemented budget cuts and reform measures and to take any new measures only in coordination with the European institutions and International Monetary Fund. The government must also commit to repay all creditors, ensure the stability of the country’s financial sector—and conclude its existing bailout program.

As he left the building, Malta’s finance minister, offered a gloomy summary of Monday’s talks. Without an extension, “there won’t be anything,” said Edward Scicluna. “It would be a disaster.”
