Athens (AFP) – Two thousand people joined a rally in Athens Saturday organised by the far-right Golden Dawn Party to mark the anniversary of the 1996 Imia crisis that brought Greece and Turkey to the brink of war.

Black-clad party members held torches and waved Greek and party flags, shouting ultra-patriotic slogans, as they marched from the Golden Dawn’s main office in northern Athens to the nearby Ministry of Defence.

In central Athens, meanwhile, counter-demonstrators gathered in defiance of a government ban on gatherings in the centre of the city.

Police put the number of people at the Golden Dawn rally at 2,000 with around 500 counter demonstrators in central Athens.

In January 1996, Greece and Turkey clashed over the sovereignty of a handful of rocky islets, called Kardak by Ankara and Imia by Athens, situated a few miles from the Turkish mainland.

The two countries sent marines to two neighbouring islets in a sign of an imminent armed confrontation, but then withdrew their troops after heavy diplomatic pressure by the United States.

Greek authorities on Friday announced a ban on all public gatherings in central Athens to avert any clashes between far-right activists and anti-fascists counter-demonstrators.

Police concerns were also raised after 12 Germans, thought to be members of a far-right group who arrived in Athens to take part in Saturday?s event, were attacked on Thursday by anti-fascists.

NSW Liberal Premier Mike Baird will make a final attempt to break the tax reform stalemate with a GST proposal that would give the federal government about $100 billion up front to dramatically cut income taxes while looking after the states’ growing health and education costs over the longer term.

With talks between the federal and state governments on the brink of collapse, and the Turnbull government all but resigned to going it alone on major tax changes, Mr Baird will propose on Monday that the GST rate be increased from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, with no expansion to the base, a move that would raise about $32.5 billion a year and more.

In the three years from 2017-18 to 2019-20, the federal government would keep all of the revenue except for $7 billion, which would be given to the states to make up for funding cuts to schools and hospitals in the 2014 federal budget. The federal government would be able to use the revenue windfall on large cuts to corporate and personal income tax and compensate welfare recipients and low-income earners.

For example, NSW suggests that of the $32.5 billion in extra revenue in the first year, the federal government could spend $8 billion in cutting the company tax rate from 30 per cent to 25 per cent, $16 billion to reduce all income tax brackets by 7 percentage points and about $8 billion on compensation.

Then, in 2020, the states and the federal government could renegotiate the redistribution of the revenue to fund health and education over the long term, taking into account how much was being generated by the GST, efficiencies in health costs that the states had been able to make and the extra revenue being driven by the economic growth generated by the tax cuts.

A PwC report in November calculated that the economy would be about $100 billion larger by 2025 if corporate tax was cut to 25 per cent.

“This modified proposal can place a secure foundation under our health and education systems, while boosting national productivity and competitiveness and providing extra support for the most vulnerable,” Mr Baird writes in today’s The Australian Financial Review.

“These reforms could adjust both our income tax and corporate tax burdens so they more closely match those of our international competitors.

“And, at 15 per cent, our GST will still remain low by OECD standards.”

When Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and state and territory leaders last met in December, there was no progress towards reaching a consensus on changing the tax system. The federal government insisted any GST increase must be fully spent on tax cuts and compensation and said tax cuts alone would generate growth and revenue.

Mr Baird and South Australian Labor Premier Jay Weatherill said proceeds of a GST increase must be used, at least in part, to fund hospitals and schools, while other premiers remained opposed to any GST increase.

With a final Council of Australian Governments meeting scheduled for late March or early April, before the Turnbull government goes it alone, Mr Baird will call his state and territory counterparts together for a meeting in about a month in a bid to try and take a united position to that final COAG.

Attempt to break deadlock

Late last year, Mr Weatherill tried to break the deadlock by proposing the federal government keep all proceeds from a 15 per cent GST rate while the states in return received a guaranteed 17.5 per cent of the income tax take. Income tax revenue grows faster than the GST. Mr Weatherill and Mr Baird agree that the states need funding stability over the longer term rather than a short-term cash burst.

Last week, Labor leader Bill Shorten announced plans to provide the $4.5 billion in slashed school funding that Mr Baird seeks.

Federal Labor opposes a GST increase and will fund its promises from the proceeds of increases to tobacco taxes, a crackdown on multinational tax minimisers, tax hikes for wealthier superannuants and cutting government spending in a new baby bonus and abolishing its budget-driven direct action climate policy.

On the weekend, Mr Weatherill was unconvinced this was a sustainable way to fund health and education – which earned him a swift rebuke on Sunday from opposition spokesman for finance Tony Burke.

“It’s a comment drowning in ignorance. Completely drowning in ignorance,” Mr Burke told Sky News.

“I accept with that one, the government’s held a gun to his head with the [2014 budget] cuts. So I can understand why he is in a desperate situation in trying to find money. On the characterisation of claiming that we haven’t funded our promises, it is just so demonstrably wrong that it needs to be called out.”

In an interview with the Financial Review, Mr Weatherill criticised a lack of policy leadership by both federal Labor and the Coalition on tax policy.

He said he would “continue to speak honestly about the issues we face until we reach agreement about sustainable solutions and I won’t be deflected”, a reference to growing attacks from federal Labor colleagues.

It’s a revenue, not spending, problem

He argued that, despite the federal government slashing $80 billion from state health and education budgets, “we’ve still been seeing a doubling of the federal budget deficit.

“We have a problem to be solved. Instead the Treasurer [Scott Morrison] is misleading voters saying that it is a spending problem, when it’s a revenue problem. We need to be more honest. Federal Labor has shut down debate about solutions.”

He said both sides of politics lacked the willingness to be honest about the problem.

“The Treasurer doesn’t want to be driven to a solution that will destabilise the government. Labor doesn’t want to concede there is a revenue problem”, because of the implications of that for the politics of the federal election campaign.

Mr Weatherill said he entered the tax debate after Mr Baird called out the need to increase the GST.

While Mr Morrison kept repeating a “jobs and growth” mantra about tax, Mr Weatherill said he “hasn’t demonstrated any correlation between change in the tax mix and jobs growth.

“The other dimension of the federal argument seems to be that the states should be raising more of their own taxes”, he said.

“But this seems to run contrary to their arguments about the correlation between growth and tax change, since they are effectively advocating an increase in inefficient taxes.”

China has strongly condemned the United States after an American warship deliberately sailed near one of its islands in the hotly-contested South China Sea to exercise freedom of navigation and challenge Beijing’s vast territorial claims.

The missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island in the Paracel chain “to challenge excessive maritime claims of parties that claim the Paracel Islands”, without notifying the three claimants beforehand, defence department spokesman Mark Wright said in Washington.

China, Taiwan and Vietnam have overlapping claims in the Paracels and require prior notice from ships transiting what they consider their territorial waters.

The latest operation was particularly aimed at China, which has increased tensions with the US and its south-east Asian neighbours by embarking on massive construction of man-made islands and airstrips in contested areas.

In October, another US warship sailed in the nearby Spratly Islands near Subi Reef, where China has built one of seven artificial islands.

Mr Wright said the attempts to restrict navigational rights by requiring prior notice were inconsistent with international law. US officials said such ship movements would be regular in the future.

China responded swiftly, with defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun saying the US action “severely violated Chinese law, sabotaged the peace, security and good order of the waters, and undermined the region’ s peace and stability”.

Chinese warned armed forces would take whatever measures “necessary to safeguard China’s sovereignty and security, no matter what provocations the US side may take”.

Foreign ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said the Chinese side conducted surveillance and “vocal warnings to the US warship”.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea and its islands, reefs and atolls on historic grounds. The area has some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and US officials say ensuring freedom of navigation is in American national interests, while not taking sides in the territorial disputes.

China seized the unpopulated Triton Island, an area of 0.46 sq. miles, from former South Vietnam in 1974. In May 2014, China parked a huge oil drilling platform off the Vietnamese coast in the area, prompting Vietnam to sent fishing boats and coastguard vessels to harass the rig and nearby Chinese vessels.

Η Μελπομένη Κουτλεμάνη με τον σύντροφο της ζωής της, Δημήτρη

Είδα τη φωτογραφία της με τις κοτσίδες και ρίγησα…

“Ήξερα ότι έπαιζα το μέλλον μου ‘κορώνα γράμματα’. Από την άλλη, όμως, είχα μεγάλη εμπιστοσύνη στην κρίση της μητέρας μου. Ήξερα ότι θα διάλεγε την κοπέλα που μού ταίριαζε για να δημιουργήσω μαζί της οικογένεια. Όταν μου έστειλε τη φωτογραφία της Μελπομένης μου, με τις κοτσίδες, την είδα και ρίγησα”.

“Εγώ δεν τον ήξερα. Είχε φύγει πριν τέσσερα χρόνια μαζί με πολλούς άλλους νέους του χωριού, μόλις άνοιξε η μετανάστευση για την Αυστραλία. Ήμουν 22 χρόνων και δούλευα σκληρά. Τη μέρα στα καπνά και το βράδυ στον αργαλειό. Πάντα σε ξένες δουλειές”.

Αυτή είναι η εισαγωγή στην ιστορία ενός ζευγαριού ομογενών της Μελβούρνης, σήμερα στα 80 τους, που φέρνουν πίσω μνήμες εξήντα σχεδόν χρόνων. Εκείνος μετανάστης του ’50 κι εκείνη μια από τις “αρραβωνιαστικές” που έφτασαν στην Αυστραλία με το Toscana, 9 Αυγούστου 1958, από το Άργος Ορεστικό.

Έναυσμα στη συνάντησή μας έδωσε το δημοσίευμα του “Νέου Κόσμου” την περασμένη Δευτέρα: “Την Πέμπτη, 1 Δεκεμβρίου του 1955 (πριν 60 χρόνια) η εφημερίδα της Ρόδου “Η Ροδιακή” έγραφε μεταξύ άλλων: “Εντός των ημερών αναχωρούν δι’ Αυστραλίαν 60 Κώοι. Σημειωτέον ότι οι περισσότεροι εξ’ αυτών είναι “αρραβωνιαστικές” και σύζυγοι συμπατριωτών μας, οίτινες μετηνάστευσαν ήδη εις Αυστραλίαν”.

Στη συνέχεια, ο “Νέος Κόσμος” που , όλα αυτά τα χρόνια περίπου, πορεύτηκε μαζί τους, ζητούσε να μάθει περισσότερα για την ιστορία αυτή. “Αν κάποια ή κάποιος μπορεί να μας φωτίσει παρακαλείται να επικοινωνήσει μαζί μας”.

MIA AΠO ΤΙΣ ΝΥΦΕΣ

“Ναι, ήμουν μια από τις 60 αρραβωνιαστικές που ήλθαν από το Άργος Ορεστικό, με το ιταλικό υπερωκεάνιο Toscana στην Μελβούρνη τον Αύγουστο του 1958” λέει η Μελπομένη Κουτλεμάνη, στη συνάντησή μας, δίνοντας το λόγο, αμέσως μετά, στον σύντροφο της ζωής της, Δημήτρη. Εκείνος, χωρίς ιδιαίτερη παρότρυνση κάνει το δικό του flashback, στο χρόνο, λιτά, παραστατικά: “Έφυγα από το Άργος Ορεστικό το ’54 σε ηλικία 20 χρόνων. Η γερμανική κατοχή και στη συνέχεια ο εμφύλιος, είχαν ρημάξει τον τόπο μας. Δεν υπήρχε μέλλον. Εγώ ήμουν εισπράκτορας στα αστικά λεωφορεία, όταν άνοιξε η μετανάστευση για την Αυστραλία. Έβαλα το όνομά μου από τους πρώτους, στους καταλόγους, και βάλθηκα να αλλάζω λάστιχα συνέχεια, για να αποχτήσουν τα χέρια μου ρόζους, γιατί αυτό ήταν που κοίταζαν πρώτα. Ζητούσαν αγρότες”.

Ο ογδοντάχρονος σήμερα Δημήτρης Κουτλεμάνης εκτιμά ότι στάθηκε τυχερός στη ζωή: “H Αυστραλία μου έδωσε την ευκαιρία να πραγματοποιήσω τους στόχους μου. Να εκπληρώσω τα όνειρά μου με μια γυναίκα που αγάπησα βαθιά και στάθηκε πάντα, όλα αυτά τα χρόνια, στο πλευρό μου”.

Σε λίγο θα διαπιστώσω ότι μιλά, κάθε άλλο παρά μεταφορικά. Οι δυο τους είναι αχώριστοι, σ’ ένα περιβάλλον που μοιάζει παραμυθένιο. Με μια ολάνθιστη αυλή, μοναδική σ’ όλη την περιοχή, με συντριβάνι δίπλα σε μια εξωτερική κουζίνα με μεγάλο παράθυρο “για να βλέπει η Μέλπω μου τα λουλούδια και το τρεχάμενο νερό που τόσο της αρέσουν”.

Φαίνεται ότι η απορημένη έκφρασή μου απαιτεί επεξήγηση: “Στο χωριό θαύμαζε πάντα τον κήπο του γιατρού Ζάχου και ονειρευόταν μια μέρα να έχει έναν δικό της τέτοιο κήπο. Της τον έδωσα. Κάθε μέρα περνούμε ατέλειωτες ώρες εκεί μαζί. Να τον κρατάμε πάντα ολάνθιστο”.

ΤΑΞΙΔΙ ΣΤΟ ΧΡΟΝΟ

Μια πρόσκληση, την Ημέρα της Αυστραλίας, με φέρνει εκεί στον κόσμο τους, και στο ταξίδι στο χρόνο που επιχειρούμε μαζί.

“Είχα δυο χρόνια στην Αυστραλία που για μένα ήταν παράδεισος. Ήμουν νέος, δυνατός, γεμάτος όνειρα, στόχους και όρεξη για δουλειά. Αντίκριζα τη ζωή με αισιοδοξία και πάντα ένοιωθα μέσα μου ότι έχω τη δύναμη να κάνω τα όνειρά μου πραγματικότητα.

Όταν έγραψα “μάνα θέλω να βρεις μια κοπέλα να παντρευτώ”, το ένστικτό μου μού έλεγε ότι θα έκανε τη σωστή επιλογή.

Όταν πήρα την πρώτη φωτογραφία της Μέλπως μου με τις κοτσίδες, συγκινήθηκα πολύ. Ένιωσα ότι ήταν η γυναίκα της ζωής μου”.

“Κι εγώ όταν είδα τη φωτογραφία του, είπα ‘αυτός είναι’. Βέβαια, ήξερα την οικογένειά του και οι δικοί μου επίσης γνωρίζονταν με τους γονείς του. Στο χωριό, εξάλλου, όλοι γνωρίζονται. Και πριν, όμως, συμβεί αυτό, εγώ έκανα όνειρα να φύγω στη Γερμανία ή την Αυστραλία. Είμαστε τρεις κόρες, και ο πατέρας μου δεν είχε να μας δώσει προίκα, όπως ζητούσαν τότε οι γαμπροί, έστω κι αν οι ίδιοι δεν είχαν περιουσία. Έγινε ο αρραβώνας, σε κλειστό κύκλο, με τους συγγενείς μόνο και… χωρίς το γαμπρό. Ήταν, όμως, απαραίτητο για να μπορέσω να φύγω από το χωριό αρραβωνιασμένη” λέει η καλοστημένη γυναίκα που έχω απέναντί μου, με το ευγενικό χαμόγελο και το έξυπνο, λαμπερό βλέμμα, δίνοντας τη σκυτάλη στον σύντροφό της.

ΞΕΦΟΡΤΩΝΑΝ ΤΑ ΝΙΑΤΑ

“Την εποχή εκείνη, κάθε βδομάδα, τα καράβια ξεφόρτωναν στο Port Melbourne, κατά εκατοντάδες, τα νιάτα της Ελλάδας. Πολλοί πηγαίναμε εκεί για να δούμε κάποιο γνωστό, φίλο ή συγχωριανό που ερχόταν. Να βοηθήσουμε ο ένας τον άλλον, οι παλιότεροι να δώσουν χέρι βοήθειας στους νεοφερμένους, ή απλά από περιέργεια, γιατί το θέαμα ήταν πραγματικά πολύ ενδιαφέρον και σε πολλές περιπτώσεις δραματικό. Έβλεπες, να περιμένουν εκεί άντρες κατά δεκάδες, με ανθοδέσμες στο χέρι, και να ξετυλίγονται εκεί σκηνές απίστευτες. Κοπέλες να βγαίνουν έξω να βλέπουν τον άντρα που τους περίμενε, να βάζουν τα κλάματα και να γυρίζουν πίσω στο καράβι. Που σήμαινε ότι αυτός που έβλεπαν δεν είχε καμία σχέση με τη φωτογραφία που είχε στείλει για να γνωριστούν. Άλλες φορές πάλι έβλεπες άντρες να βλέπουν την κοπέλα και να το βάζουν στα πόδια γιατί δεν έμοιαζε με τη φωτογραφία που είχαν δει. Το χειρότερο, όμως, όλων, ήταν όταν η κοπέλα που περίμενε κάποιος τα είχε φτιάξει στο καράβι με άλλον. Είχε δηλαδή αποκτήσει άλλον αρραβωνιαστικό. Τότε όλοι αυτοί με τις ανθοδέσμες, έκαναν μεταβολή και το έβαζαν στα πόδια.

Οι σκηνές αυτές σ’ έκαναν να ανατριχιάζεις. Γι’ αυτό και όταν η Μέλπω μπήκε στο καράβι, αισθανόμουν ότι δεν ήθελα να βγει στο Port Melbourne. Έκανα λοιπόν όλες τις απαιτούμενες ενέργειες για να βγει στο λιμάνι του Σίδνεϊ και από κει να έλθει αεροπορικώς στη Μελβούρνη. Έτσι, την υποδέχτηκα στο αεροδρόμιο του Essendon και μαζί, μετά από τρεις μέρες, πήγαμε στο Port Melbourne όπου η Μέλπω ήθελε να υποδεχθεί τις συγχωριανές της που κι εκείνες έρχονταν στην Αυστραλία αρραβωνιασμένες”.

ΘΕΛΕΙΣ ΝΑ ΤΟΝ ΓΝΩΡΙΣΕΙΣ

Πώς νιώθεις, όταν δεν γνωρίζεις κάποιον και διανύεις ωκεανούς για να τον συναντήσεις και να τον παντρευτείς;

“Αισθάνεσαι μια μεγάλη επιθυμία να τον γνωρίσεις πραγματικά. Να μην κλείσεις τα μάτια και πεις ‘αυτός είναι’. Από την άλλη πλευρά λες στον εαυτό σου ότι ο άνθρωπος γεννιέται με προτερήματα και ελαττώματα. Γι’ αυτά δεν μπορείς να κάνεις τίποτε. Φεύγοντας οι γονείς μου, μου είπαν ‘πρόσεξε μη μας ντροπιάσεις. Όπως και να ‘ναι, θα τον πάρεις’. Φυσικά, ήμουν τυχερή γιατί ταιριάξαμε από την αρχή. Εξάλλου, μου άρεσε. Τον είδα και είπα ‘αυτός είναι’. Τα χρόνια που πέρασαν, μας έφερναν όλο και πιο πολύ κοντά τον έναν στον άλλον. Σήμερα είμαστε πραγματικά αχώριστοι. Μακάρι να κλείσουμε τα μάτια μας μαζί. Αυτή είναι η μεγαλύτερή μας ευχή”.

Μακάβρια δήλωση σ’ ένα παραμυθένιο περιβάλλον, σε κήπο ολάνθιστο, με τα πουλιά να τιτιβίζουν στα δέντρα και το γάργαρο νερό να περνά από τον βραχόκηπο τραγουδιστά έξω από το παράθυρο της εξωτερικής κουζίνας που έχτισε με τα χέρια του ο Δημήτρης για την αγαπημένη του. “Όσο περνούν τα χρόνια δενόμαστε πιο πολύ. Αλήθεια ξέρεις γιατί χωρίζουν τόσο εύκολα τα ζευγάρια σήμερα; Πώς γίνεται, πολλές φορές, να γνωρίζονται χρόνια, να παίρνονται από έρωτα και μετά να χωρίζουν;” ρωτά η Μελπομένη, μια από τις “νύφες” που το ταξίδι της στην Αυστραλία είχε αίσιο προορισμό.

Στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων για την Ημέρα της Αυστραλίας, έγιναν σε όλη τη χώρα και εκατοντάδες τελετές πολιτογράφησης Αυστραλών πολιτών.

Απ’ άκρη σ’ άκρη της Αυστραλίας γιορτάστηκε την Τρίτη, με διάφορες εκδηλώσεις, η Ημέρα της Αυστραλίας. Μία ημέρα κατά την οποία οι Αυστραλοί σε όλο τον κόσμο, εορτάζουν και τιμούν τα ιδανικά και τις αξίες που τους ενώνουν ως έθνος.

Στους εορτασμούς δεν συμμετείχαν οι Αβορίγινες, καθώς θεωρούν την επέτειο «Ημέρα Πένθους», αφού τέτοια μέρα έφτασαν οι πρώτοι άποικοι από τη Βρετανία.

Μάλιστα, οι αυτόχθονες και οι υποστηρικτές τους έκαναν και μαζικές εκδηλώσεις, όπως γράφουμε ξεχωριστά.

«Αυστραλός της Χρονιάς για το 2016» ανακηρύχθηκε ο πρώην επικεφαλής του Πεζικού, Ντέιβιντ Μόρισον, που ηγείται της εκστρατείας για την ισότητα των φύλων, αλλά και για την κατάργηση της μοναρχίας στην Αυστραλία. (Γράφουμε χωριστά και για το θέμα αυτό).

Στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων για την Ημέρα της Αυστραλίας, έγιναν σε όλη τη χώρα και εκατοντάδες τελετές πολιτογράφησης Αυστραλών πολιτών.

Την Τρίτη πολιτογραφήθηκαν Αυστραλοί 16.000 άτομα, από 175 διαφορετικές χώρες, ανάμεσα στις οποίες η Ελλάδα και η Κύπρος.

Είθισται, την Ημέρα της εθνικής εορτής, να αναγνωρίζονται εκείνοι οι Αυστραλοί που με το ήθος, την προσφορά και το έργο τους, αποτελούν λαμπρό παράδειγμα των αρχών και των αξιών που πρέπει να διέπουν την αυστραλιανή κοινωνία.

Φέτος τιμήθηκαν περίπου 800 Αυστραλοί με ειδικές διακρίσεις. Επιστήμονες, φιλάνθρωποι, καλλιτέχνες, αθλητές κ.ά. Ανάμεσά τους και επτά ομογενείς.

Με την ΑΟ, τιμήθηκε ο ομογενής καθηγητής, Μηνάς Θεόδωρος Κορωναίος, από τη Νέα Νότια Ουαλία, για τη διακεκριμένη προσφορά του στην Οφθαλμολογία και την έρευνα και ανάπτυξη καινοτόμων τεχνολογιών χειρουργικής. Επίσης, τιμήθηκε για τα όσα έχει κάνει υπέρ της υγείας των ματιών στην περιφερειακή Αυστραλία και τις κοινότητες των Ιθαγενών.

Ο καθηγητής Κορωναίος εξέφρασε στο ελληνικό πρόγραμμα της SBS ικανοποίηση για την διάκριση που έλαβε, παράλληλα, όμως, δήλωσε λυπημένος που δεν είναι στη ζωή οι γονείς του για να χαρούν και εκείνοι, που ήρθαν στην Αυστραλία για μια καλύτερη ζωή και για να μορφώσουν τα παιδιά του με πολλή και σκληρή δουλειά:

Με την ίδια διάκριση, AO, τιμήθηκε και ο πανεπιστημιακός George Pappas, από τη Βικτώρια, για τις υπηρεσίες του στην κοινωνία, μέσα από διάφορους ρόλους, όπως στην ανώτερη εκπαίδευση, την ιατρική έρευνα, τον τομέα των επιχειρήσεων και οργανώσεις άμυνας.

Η διάκριση AM απονεμήθηκε στον ελληνικής καταγωγής από την Κουηνσλάνδη, Dr Vlassis Pitsonis Efstathis,

για τις πολύ σημαντικές υπηρεσίες του στον ιατρικό κλάδο, υπηρετώντας μέσα από διάφορες οργανώσεις και υπηρεσίες.

Διακρίσεις δόθηκαν ακόμα στον κ. Breeders struggle to prevent the extinction of Greece’s rarest horse

The Skyrian pony is one of the rerest horse breeds in the world. This small-bodied native Greek horse is a protected species.

It belongs to the species Equus Cabalus but because of its small size it is considered a different race designated Equus Cabalus Skyros Poni or Equus Cabalus Skyriano.

Less than 152 Skyrian horses live on Skyros island and not even two hundred can be found throughout Greece.

In ancient times, Skyrian horses were an export and lived throughout the then country’s borders.

The Skyrian horses are a particularly friendly, social, robust and intelligent breed with similar body type to that of the normal horse.

Their height, however, does not exceed the maximum of 116 cm and their hooves don’t need shoeing.

Skyrian ponies have slim, strong and wiry legs but large torsos and long, low set tails.

Some horses have a white mark on the face accentuating their dark red or chestnut hue.

Greek breeders are currently struggling to save the horse from extinction.

On a more positive note, the endangered species has found an ally on another island, in Scotland.

Veterinarian Sheilagh Brown, 54, of Overton Bush fascinated by the breed’s unique genetic makeup took over Scotland’s only herd, aspiring to increase the numbers.

“I would like to do some more detailed genetic tests and I have liaised with Greek colleagues to do this, but we have not identified a source of funding yet.”

“I am thoroughly enjoying breeding the ponies and looking after them,” Brown told Horsetalk.

The Skyrian pony arrived in Scotland in 2005, when retired vet lecturer Alec Copland, also an Exmoor pony breeder, imported five breeding animals from Corfu.

Brown went to see him in the middle of last year as she was looking to buy another Exmoor pony. He asked her if she was interested in taking over the Skyrian herd, which then stood at 14, to keep the breeding programme going. She agreed.

The numbers have since grown to 22. Some are now distributed among horse enthusiasts in southern Scotland to ease pressure on Brown’s grazing.

The statues of Artemis and Apollo were recovered in relatively good condition

Archaeologists excavating a Roman-era villa in Crete have uncovered two impressive, small-sized statues depicting the gods Artemis and Apollo, according to a statement by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

Found in the archaeological site of Aptera, a city in western Crete destroyed by an earthquake in the 7th century AD, the sculptures date to the first or second century AD and stand at around 21 inches in height.

The one depicting the hunting goddess Artemis is made of copper, while the other, portraying her twin brother Apollo, is carved from marble.

Once standing on an ornate base also made of copper, Artemis is wearing a short chiton, or tunic, and is ready to shoot an arrow.The statue is described as being in an excellent state of preservation.

“The preservation of the white material used for her eyes is spectacular,” the ministry said.The marble statuette of Apollo is simpler in style, but nevertheless finely carved.

Traces of red paint are still visible on the statue’s pedestal.According to the team led by archaeologist Vanna Niniou-Kindelis, director of excavations at Aptera, both sculptures were likely imported to the island in order to decorate a shrine in the luxury Roman villa in which they were found.

A boat carrying Syrians attempting the short sea journey from Turkey to Greece struck rocks and capsized at dawn on Saturday, causing at least 37 people to drown, among them several babies and young children.

Images of dead children on a beach were another soul-searing reminder that Europe’s migrant crisis keeps destroying lives and families by the day.

They recalled the photo of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi lying face down on a Turkish beach last year. His story put an intimate face on the Syrian refugee crisis for people across the world, prompting many to finally grapple with the magnitude of the suffering caused by the war in the Middle East and the treacherous journeys many risk seeking shelter in Europe.

By contrast, the heartbreaking images Saturday met a muted response, perhaps a sign that many have grown weary of the unending reports about the suffering of migrants even though the number of people dying at sea is rising.

Πρόκειται για ένα πρόγραμμα πρακτικής εξάσκησης για άνεργους Έλληνες αποφοίτους, που ανακοίνωσε το νεοσυσταθέν παράρτημα του διεθνούς κινήματος των Ελλήνων της Διασποράς «Ελληνική Πρωτοβουλία» (The Hellenic Initiative-THI) στην Αυστραλία.

Την όλη κίνηση στηρίζει και η Αυστραλιανή Πρεσβεία στην Αθήνα η οποία την περασμένη εβδομάδα με πρωτοβουλία του Αυστραλού πρέσβη στην Αθήνα, κ. Griffin, αποχαιρέτισε την πρώτη ομάδα των οκτώ νέων που έφυγαν από την Αθήνα για την Αυστραλία.

Gina Rinehart is no longer Australia’s richest person.

In the past five years Ms Rinehart has topped Forbes Australia’s rich list, but this year she has been unseated by another woman – reclusive American heiress and longtime Australian resident Blair Parry-Okeden.

Ms Parry-Okeden’s net worth of $US8.8 billion ($12.5 billion) makes her the country’s richest person (again) while Ms Rinehart has fallen to second place with a net worth of $US8.5 billion ($12.1 billion).

Forbes says Ms Parry-Okeden, who grew up in Hawaii and moved to her ex-husband’s country of birth Australia decades ago, was recently confirmed to be an Australian citizen.

After her mother’s 2007, death she inherited a quarter of US media conglomerate Cox Enterprises, America’s third-biggest cable TV company.

This is not the first time Forbes has named Ms Parry-Okeden as Australia’s richest person. She first took the title in 2009, overtaking mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest for the top spot

Forbes says Ms Rinehart’s wealth has slipped $US3.2 billion in the past year, mainly due to falling iron ore prices and a legal ruling which impacted her shareholding in Hancock Prospecting.

Ms Rinehart’s wealth erosion was the largest in dollar terms, but fellow iron ore miner Andrew Forrest’s wealth took the biggest percentage hit: down 41 per cent, sending him down 12 spots on the rich list to No. 22.

Property baron Harry Triguboff ranks number three on this year’s list, with a net worth of $US6.9 billion ($9.8 billion).

Rising rents and increased demand for his Sydney apartments helped drive up Mr Triguboff’s fortune by $US1.3 billion, Forbes says.

Property sales of his apartment tower development company, Meriton, are expected to rise 70 per cent this year.

The biggest winner on the rich scale in percentage terms was Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes. His wealth jumped 62 per cent to $US1.78 billion after the successful float of the software company on the US sharemarket in December. Atlassian’s co-founder, Scott Farquhar, is right behind him.

James Packer fell two spots to sixth rank with an estimated fortune of $3.5 billion.
