Real Madrid want Arsenal star Laurent Koscielny to replace Man Utd target Sergio Ramos

laurent koscielny

REAL MADRID want to sign Arsenal star Laurent Koscielny in a £21.5million deal this summer, according to reports.

Koscielny only signed a new Arsenal deal last summer but, according to France Football, has apparently been targeted by Rafa Benitez as the man to improve Real’s defence as Sergio Ramos heads for the exit.

The Spain international is believed to have told Los Blancos he wants to join Manchester United after failing to negotiate a lucrative new contract.

Veteran Pepe has also been linked with a move away from Real this summer, while Chelsea maintain interest in France international Raphael Varane.

And Arsene Wenger could have a battle on his hands to keep Koscielny at the Emirates should Madrid come knocking.

Manchester City will green light £50m Raheem Sterling bid, sources say

images
Manchester City’s hierarchy have given the green light for the club to make a £50 million offer for Liverpool and England star Raheem Sterling, sources have told ESPNFC.

City have already seen two bids rejected for Sterling by Liverpool with their first offer of £25m plus add ons rejected earlier this month before their improved bid of £40m was turned down last week.

Liverpool are thought to be holding out for a fee in the region of £50m before they would consider selling Sterling and, after talks at the highest level, City are ready to go to £50m to try and steer the 20-year-old away from Anfield, sources said.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said earlier this month that the club were planning to heavily invest in new players this summer as they looked to regain and make an impression in the Premier League.

Sterling would add versatility to their attacking options and would also boost their homegrown player quota which has been hit hard by the departures of James Milner, Frank Lampard, Micah Richards and Dedryck Boyata.

Sterling’s future at Liverpool has dominated this summer’s transfer window with the forward turning down the club’s offer of a new £100,000-a-week deal in April.

The player’s representatives have made it clear that Sterling will not sign a new deal at Anfield, no matter what is on offer from the Merseyside club.

Liverpool have said they would not be forced into selling the unsettled star with Sterling having still two years to run on his current deal, but it City are edging closer to agreeing a suitable fee to enable Liverpool to reluctantly allow the forward to move on, the sources said.

City are looking to get their summer rebuilding plans underway and see Sterling’s signing as a major signal of intent at home and abroad, sources said.

Sterling is also determined to have his future resolved as soon as possible and should City seal the signing for a fee of £50m it would make the former Queens Park Rangers youngster the most expensive English player of all time.

Man United demand £46m Ramos in Real Madrid swap deal for De Gea

untitled

Van Gaal eyes shock Ramos swoop

Something is rotten in the Community of Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti was jettisoned just one season after winning La Decima at Real, and Los Blancos now appear to be paying the penalty for a perceived lack of support in their Galacticos.

AS reports that Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo is “[annoyed] at the ongoing treatment of two of his closer friends at the club: Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos,” and is currently “agitated” at the Bernabeu.

The 30-year-old netted a personal record of 61 goals last season but was overshadowed by Barcelona’s Treble-winning side — a bitter blow to the Portugal captain’s pride, and one that may test his patience having won just one La Liga title in his six seasons at Madrid.

With the forward reportedly unhappy at the uncertainty surrounding Sergio Ramos‘ future, it is no surprise to see AS also stating that the 29-year-old defender wants to leave Real this summer.

The Spain international is said to be perturbed after Real were slow to act over Barcelona presidential candidate Jordi Majo’s claims that Ramos was offered to him as a campaign sweetener, as well as the club letting his contract run down to within two years of expiry.

The Guardian reports that Manchester United will exploit Ramos’ desire to leave by demanding the defender as part of any deal that sees David De Gea leave Old Trafford this summer, with the paper saying representatives from Real sent to sign De Gea were met with a counter-bid: “You want De Gea, we want Ramos.”

ESPN FC’s Rob Train argues that Real would regret losing Ramos over a wage dispute, and although the centre-back’s official buyout clause stands at an eye-watering €180 million (£128m), the Mail reports that Real will instead ask United for around €65 million (£46m) instead.

The Sun reports that the Red Devils want Ramos included in any new offer for De Gea, while the Independent suggests that Real would want a cash-plus-De Gea deal for Ramos — although all outlets agree that United could easily match the defender’s demands of a €10-million-a-year (£7.1m) salary, which equates to a cool £140,000 a week.

United strike duo to depart?

Although much of today’s Transfer Talk drama concerns Manchester United’s defence, there’s plenty of gossip further up the field.

Yet another United player may be departing Old Trafford for Madrid, but AS reports that this deal concerns Real’s bitter rivals Atletico. The Spanish paper suggests that Diego Simeone is interested in bringing Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez to Spain given the impending departure of Mario Mandzukic to Juventus.

Despite having yet to sign a recognised centre-forward, Louis van Gaal may let another slip away in the surly shape of Robin van Persie. The Netherlands international was tipped to shine for his former Oranje coach, but injuries and a lack of form have seen him linked with a move abroad.

The Mirror reports that Fenerbahce have emerged as front-runners for the 31-year-old’s signature given that his wage demands have effectively ruled Galatasaray, Roma and Lazio out of the race.

Liverpool look to La Liga

Brendan Rodgers has signed four players from English clubs to bolster his Liverpool squad — James Milner, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Adam Bogdan — and now appears to be shifting his attention looking Spain to complete the job.

Marca reports that Liverpool are “pushing hard” for Asier Illarramendi having seen an initial bid rejected, with the Anfield club handing Real Madrid an improved offer of around €22 million (£15m) for the 25-year-old midfielder. The decision appears to be up to Real coach Rafa Benitez, and Transfer Talk isn’t betting against the former Kop favourite doing his old club a solid.

Meanwhile, Rodgers’ pursuit of Sevilla forward Carlos Bacca has hit a snag with the Liga club’s legendary sporting director Monchi stating:“If someone wants Bacca, they have to pay his clause. He’s told us that it’s his desire to stay with the club and I don’t see any other possibility.”

The Colombian’s clause stands at around £21.5 million — a sizeable fee for the 28-year-old despite his impressive goal tally last season.

And what of Raheem Sterling? There could be news soon with the Mail reporting that the forward flew back from his summer holidays on a private jet. That’s either a sign that talks with Manchester City are advancing, or he simply didn’t want to run the risk of sitting next to a Liverpool fan all the way back from Ibiza.

Cech nears Arsenal move

While former Arsenal defender Lauren effectively welcomed Petr Cech to the Gunners on Saturday, Sky Sports reports that a move is “close” and that “only a fee needs to be agreed with Chelsea” for the goalkeeper.

That agreement could be some way off with Arsene Wenger often bidding low on prospective targets, while Chelsea have been incredibly savvy in negotiating high fees for players in recent seasons.

Sky suggests that Chelsea’s request for a homegrown player as part of the deal is “no longer being considered,” with the transfer purely down to cold, hard cash.

But given the Gunners’ embarrassment of attacking riches, The Sun reports that Benfica will finally attempt to prise Costa Rica international Joel Campbell away from North London this summer. That could pave the way for Jackson Martinez to join from Porto, with reports in Italy suggesting that AC Milan are no longer interested in the forward after his come-and-get-me plea to Wenger.

One player the Gunners are definitely missing out on is Geoffrey Kondogbia, with the former Monaco midfielder joining Inter — a real coup for the Nerazzurri.

Southampton thinking big next term

It seems that Southampton haven’t been put off signing Toby Alderweireld despite their initial agreement with Atletico Madrid going up in smoke. The Saints missed out on a cut-price £5.7 million option after Atleti realised they could hawk the defender to the highest bidder, but the south coast club may well stump up the cash.

The Mirror reports that Ronald Koeman is willing to smash the club’s transfer record and spend £18 million on the Belgian defender to fend off interest from Tottenham — a real statement of intent from the Saints after a superb 2014-15 campaign.

Meanwhile, the Express reports that Koeman is also aiming to steal a march on Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Liverpool by landing QPR striker Charlie Austin in a £10 million deal.

Although Newcastle and West Ham are also interested in Austin — with the Mirror reporting that the Crystal Palace board will block Alan Pardew’s attempts to sign him for £15 million — the chance to play regular football at an ambitious club in the south of England to realise his international ambitions could well swing any potential decision in Southampton’s favour.

Tap-ins

Roberto Soldado has struggled to find anything close to the form he showed at Valencia during his two seasons at White Hart Lane, and Tottenham are ready to take a £15 million hit on the Spanish striker.

The Mirror reports that Spurs will let Soldado go for around £11 million this summer, although Galatasaray are ready to test Daniel Levy’s patience by submitting a £9 million offer. The promise of Champions League football could be an intriguing one for the forward, who surely needs a fresh start.

The Sun also reports that West Ham have joined Chelsea in the race for Mousa Dembele, while the same paper suggests that Mauricio Pochettino is intent on keeping Kyle Walker despite the signing of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier.

– The Mirror reports that the Hammers may have better luck with an “audacious” loan move for Inter Milan’s Zdravko Kuzmanovic, with the 27-year-old thought to be available as the Nerazzurri plan a summer rebuild.

– Swansea are intent on building a side to really challenge next season, and the Express reports that Garry Monk is planning a raid on Celtic for the £8 million-rated Virgil van Dijk.

– Watford are busy bolstering their squad for the task of staying in the top flight next term, with the Mirror reporting that the Hornets have launched a club-record £7 million bid for Genoa winger Diego Perotti. The catch? The 26-year-old wants to join Valencia instead.

– J-League club FC Tokyo are sounding out the likes of Tommy Oar, Marc Janko and Nathan Burns as replacements for Mainz-bound forward Yoshinori Muto, according to SBS.

Matildas beat Brazil 1-0 to enter Women’s World Cup quarter-finals with Kyah Simon goal

6562292-4x3-940x705

The Matildas have put their Women’s World Cup rivals on notice after securing a place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Brazil in Canada this morning.

Substitute Kyah Simon got the breakthrough goal after 80 minutes in wet and windy conditions against the 2007 runners-up, captained by former five-time world player of the year Marta.

Australia, ranked 10th in the world, is now preparing for a quarter-final clash against either fourth-ranked Japan or the 12th-ranked Netherlands, who face each other on Tuesday (local time).

Australia’s coach Alen Stajcic hailed Australia’s “exhilarating” first finals victory in a World Cup tournament as a “massively historic moment” and issued a warning to other teams.

“We’re a dangerous team, one of the most dangerous teams at the World Cup, if not the most dangerous team in going forward,” he said.

“Our defence was good again today.

“The first ever clean-sheet in history two games ago and now we’ve conceded one goal in three games — we’re an attacking team, you have to play good football to break us down.”

The Matildas have qualified for the Cup quarter-finals on two previous occasions, in 2007 and 2011, but this morning’s game was their first knockout victory.

The World Cup has a last-16 round for the first time as the tournament has been expanded to 24 teams.

Midfielder Elise Kellond-Knight said the team was “super proud” of the historic victory.

“There’s a sense of satisfaction, we’ve worked so hard for this,” she said.

Media player: “Space” to play, “M” to mute, “left” and “right” to seek.

6562286-4x3-940x705

“This is the first time we’ve actually won a sudden death game in a World Cup, so the pride that comes through knowing that is tremendous and I’m just super satisfied of the performance we put out today.”

Goalkeeper Lydia Williams said she and her team-mates were still coming to terms with the magnitude of their achievement.

“All of us are pretty tired and it’s still sinking in what we’ve achieved so far,” she said.

“I think being away in Canada we don’t realise the strength of what we’re achieving back at home in newspapers or anything.

“So right now it’s recharging and getting ready for the next one and making sure that everyone is ready to go.”

Both teams fought to break through in a tight first half, with Marta, Andressina and Formiga all missing the target for the seventh-ranked Brazilians.

Marta missed another chance to add to her World Cup record 15 goals after 62 minutes when she hit wide of Williams, who did well to keep out a Cristiane effort after 78 minutes.

Stajcic brought on Simon after 64 minutes and it paid off with 10 minutes to go.

Captain Lisa De Vanna broke through with her shot punched out by Luciana in the Brazil goal straight into the path of the onrushing Simon, who made no mistake.

It was her third goal of the tournament after her stunning double against Nigeria in the group stage.

6562348-3x2-940x627

It was the only goal Brazil conceded in the tournament but it cost them dearly.

In the group stage the ‘Canarinhas’ won all three of their games without conceding, but when it came to the crunch they failed to create enough problems for a rock solid Australian defence.

Star performer Marta looked far from her best as she was neutralised by Australia’s disciplined marking and ability to close down space.

Footballing giants Brazil, the world’s seventh-ranked team, return home still awaiting a maiden title.

“We controlled the game, the statistics show that, the chances showed that but we lost the game and we are out,” Brazil coach Vadao said.

“Australia were very efficient and clinical when it counted with the goal, congratulations to them.”

In this morning’s other last 16 games, third-ranked France beat eight-ranked South Korea 3-0 in Montreal to set up a quarter-finals date with world number one Germany, while hosts Canada, ranked eighth in the world, downed 19th-ranked Switzerland 1-0 in Vancouver.

Canada takes on Norway or England for a spot in the last four.

Newcastle:The Jets had $21m in debt, $605 in the bank

untitled

A SPIDER’S web of $18million worth of inter-company loans kept Nathan Tinkler’s Newcastle Jets afloat, until the club buckled in May under the weight of more than $21million debt.

A creditors’ report has revealed that when the company was placed in voluntary administration it had $605.46 cash in the bank, $88 in office petty cash, gym equipment, some outdated merchandise and a 2009 Hyundai i30.

Further investigation revealed the club owed $1.5million in wages and superannuation, $1.1million to suppliers and $2.7million to the tax office.

The club had long been a financial basket-case.

According to Newcastle Jets Football Operations director Donna Dennis, the company failed for a host of reasons including overpaid executives and the inability to attract sponsors. Ms Dennis, who is Mr Tinkler’s sister, said “unfavourable treatment” by Football Federation Australia, “inability to terminate underperforming players” and a “small member base” all contributed to the club’s demise.

She went further to blame “excessive ground hiring costs by Hunter Venues”, “no support from Northern NSW Football”, “no cash flow assistance from FFA”, “close proximity” to Central Coast Mariners and “limited corporate hospitality revenue”.

Northern NSW Football chief David Eland described the claims as a ‘‘joke’’.

See your ad here
‘‘Northern NSW Football absolutely refutes that assertion,’’ Mr Eland said.

According to the company’s administrator, James Shaw, the club had difficulty attracting major sponsors and relied heavily on sponsorship that came from other Tinkler-related companies.

In 2013, when the tax office attempted to wind up the Jets over unpaid debts, Mr Tinkler’s Hunter Ports stepped in and paid a $2.1million bill.

Financial records reveal that sponsorship for the A-League club almost halved from $2.2million in the 2012-13 financial year to $1.2million this year.

At the same time, match day sales plummeted from $720,000 to $366,000, merchandise sales dropped from $320,000 to $158,000 and corporate hospitality income slumped $140,000.

The club was underperforming and was plagued by falling crowd numbers.

When Jets players walked onto Hunter Stadium to face Perth Glory on April 6, they were met by a record-low crowd of 4192. Fans vented their frustration at coach Phil Stubbins and the club’s worst season on record by unveiling a giant banner at half-time that stretched across three bays of the Andrew Johns Stand.

“Enough failure lies and arrogance 10,000 fans demand the muppet gone,” it read.

The only income to increase at the trouble-prone club in the two years to June was FFA’s annual grant to pay player wages that went from $1.9million to $2.7million.

Insiders told the Herald a lack of cash flow spurred the end of the former mining magnate’s reign.

According to company records, executive expenses at the club increased more than 300 per cent from $131,000 in 2012-13 to $469,000 this financial year, while the amount spent on players dropped from $4.1million to $3.3million.

Despite cost-cutting efforts that saw administration expenses slashed and youth league spending cut, the financial losses continued to mountpressure on Mr Tinkler’s crumbling business empire, which was having its own cash-flow problems.

Internal company accounts reveal the Jets recorded a $4.4million loss in the year to June 2013, a further $2million loss the next year and $1.3million this financial year.

Olympiakos owner banned from soccer over corruption probe

Vangelis Marinakis, owner of Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus, has been banned from soccer as an investigation continues into allegations that a criminal organisation is controlling the domestic game.

According to judicial sources, the shipping magnate has also been ordered to report to police every 15 days on strict bail terms.

Marinakis was released on bail of 200,000 euros ($228,240) after giving testimony to Athens prosecutor George Andreadis in a seven-hour hearing.

The Olympiakos president is accused of being involved in and directing a criminal organisation, aiding and abetting blackmailing, aiding and abetting extortion, and aiding and abetting bribery and fraud.

Marinakis must now quit as president of Olympiakos but he can retain ownership of the company that runs the club.

The development has serious ramifications for the Super League winners who are due to take part in next season’s Champions League.

According to media reports, runners-up Panathinaikos and third-placed PAOK Salonika have prepared complaints to organisers UEFA that question whether Olympiakos should be allowed to compete in Europe.

Marinakis’ hearing came 24 hours after former Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) president Giorgos Sarris was banned from football and ordered to remain in Greece as part of his bail terms.

Sarris, president of the EPO from October 2012 to December 2014, was released on bail of 50,000 euros. He denies all accusations.

He faces charges including constituting and directing a criminal organisation, fraud, blackmail and bribery.

The latest Greek football scandal, following the ‘Koriopolis’ match-fixing probe of 2011, emerged in April when a 173-page document was revealed by prosecutor Aristidis Korreas and prompted a nationwide investigation.

Korreas’ document contained transcriptions of telephone tapping operated by the National Intelligence Service.

It is alleged that Marinakis and EPO officials Sarris and Theodoros Kouridis were responsible for directing a criminal organisation since 2011 with the aim of “absolute control of Greek football’s fate by the methods of blackmailing and fraud.
