Hamilton Olympic were held to a 0-0 draw by Lambton Jaffas in Round 13 of the NPL at Arthur Edden Oval.

Despite the 0-0 scoreline and a match in which both sides cancelled each other out, both teams had opportunities to score, particularly Olympic!

After 11 minutes of play Alex Palozzi crossed into the Olympic area, John Majurovski brought the ball down and forced a corner from Danny Ireland.

On the half hour mark Reece Cooper served a delightful ball to Simon Mooney on the left who raced down the line and hammered a shot past Brad Swancott, only for the ball to rebound off the post!

After the break, the first goal scoring opportunity fell to Olympic when Reece Cooper put Kane Goodchild through, only for Brad Swancott to save with his feet!

A little later Reece Cooper tested the Jaffas goalie with a long range shot from outside the box while Michael Bridges did the same with Danny Ireland from a well taken free kick.

Minutes before the end Mason Campbell fired a shot from a good position only for the ball to be  deflected for a corner by the Jaffas defence. From the corner Reece Cooper found himself with only the keeper to beat, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

This draw keeps Olympic in second spot, 4 points behind Edgeworth Eagles who won away at Maitland.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός αντιμετώπισε την Κλαμπ Μπριζ σε φιλικό και έδειξε μέτρια εικόνα στην ήττα με 2-1 εμφανώς κουρασμένος από τις πρώτες ημέρες προπονήσεων στην προετοιμασία της Ολλανδίας.

Ο Καρέλης άνοιξε το σκορ, αλλά οι Ντιαμπί (με το χέρι) και Ντεφό έφεραν τα πάνω-κάτω. Πολλά προβλήματα και κενά στην άμυνα, με τον Κοτσόλη να σώζει σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, «θέμα» και στη δημιουργία φάσεων, όπου ουσιαστικά μετά το 30’ δεν υπήρχε ρυθμός για την ελληνική ομάδα και δεν απείλησε.

Δεν αγωνίστηκαν για τον ΠΑΟ οι Εσιέν, Βέμερ, Νάνο, Στιλ και Κλωναρίδης.

Στο πρώτο του δυνατό φιλικό τεστ επί ολλανδικού εδάφους ο ΠΑΟΚ ηττήθηκε την Τετάρτη με 4-3 σκορ από τη γερμανική Μπόχουμ, φανερώνοντας πολλά προβλήματα στην άμυνα.

O «δικέφαλος» του Βορρά έβρισκε λύσεις στην επίθεση, με τους Πέλκα και Λούκας να βοηθούν πολύ στο επιθετικό κομμάτι, ωστόσο στα μετόπισθεν πελαγοδρομούσε, με αποτέλεσμα να έρθει η ήττα.

Στο πρώτο ημίχρονο τα γκολ έπεφταν σαν «βροχή». Οι θεσσαλονικείς άνοιξαν το σκορ μόλις στο 6ο λεπτό με τον Περέιρα, ωστόσο τέσσερα λεπτά αργότερα οι γερμανοί ισοφάρισαν με αυτογκόλ του Κόστα, ο οποίος σε προσπάθεια του με προβολή να κόψει βαθιά μπαλιά «κρέμασε» τον Όλσεν.

Ο Περέιρα στο αμέσως επόμενο λεπτό με το δεύτερο προσωπικό του γκολ έκανε το 2-1 για τον ΠΑΟΚ, με την Μπόχουμ να ισοφαρίζει εκ νέου με το εξαιρετικό τακουνάκι του Χούγκλαντ στο 31’.

Στο 42ο λεπτό ο Όλσεν, στο ντεμπούτο του με τον δικέφαλο, υπέπεσε σε τραγικό σφάλμα, καθώς σε γύρισμα του Βίτορ δεν υπολόγισε σωστά και η μπάλα πέρασε ανάμεσα από τα πόδια του για να καταλήξει στα δίχτυα.

Η απάντηση της ομάδας του Τούντορ πάντως ήταν άμεση. Στις καθυστερήσεις του πρώτου μέρους μετά από ωραία ατομική ενέργεια του Λούκας, ο Κίτσιου έγινε αποδέκτης της μπάλας και με σουτ έκανε το 3-3, που ήταν και το σκορ ημιχρόνου.

Στο δεύτερο μέρος οι δύο ομάδες έκαναν αρκετές αλλαγές με την Μπόχουμ να πιέζει φτάνοντας στο 4-3 με κοντινή προβολή του Γκρέγκοριτς στο 66ο λεπτό.

Το καλύτερο δυνατό ξεκίνημα έκανε η Εθνική ομάδα Νέων στην τελική φάση του Ευρωπαϊκού Πρωταθλήματος, που φιλοξενείται στην Ελλάδα, καθώς στον εναρκτήριο αγώνα της διοργάνωσης και του 1ου ομίλου επικράτησε στη Βέροια της Ουκρανίας με 2-0 και πήρε προβάδισμα αμέσως στην κατάταξη.

Η πρώτη μεγάλη ευκαιρία της αναμέτρησης ανήκε ωστόσο στους Ουκρανούς, με τον Μπόριατσουκ να αστοχεί από εξαιρετική θέση στο 13ο λεπτό, ενώ στο 17΄ ο Κότσαρης επενέβη αποτελεσματικά στην προσπάθεια του Κοβαλένκο. Τρία λεπτά αργότερα, όμως, ήταν η ελληνική ομάδα που άνοιξε το σκορ με τον Ορφανίδη, ύστερα από ασίστ του Κουλούρη.

Αρκετά επικίνδυνοι και στην επανάληψη οι φιλοξενούμενοι, είχαν νέα καλή στιγμή με τον Κοβαλένκο στο 57΄ αλλά ο Κότσαρης έκανε και πάλι σπουδαία επέμβαση, κάτι που επαναλήφθηκε στο 59΄ με “πρωταγωνιστές” τους ίδιους ποδοσφαιριστές. Τελικά, όπως συνέβη στο πρώτο ημίχρονο η ιστορία επαναλήφθηκε και ενάντια στη ροή του αγώνα ο Καραχάλιος διπλασίασε για την Εθνική ομάδα στο 76΄, ύστερα από πάσα του Ορφανίδη.

Ο Άγγλος διαιτητής Άντονι Τέιλορ είχε εύκολο έργο καθώς τον βοήθησε το παιχνίδι και ως εκ τούτου δεν χρειάστηκε να παρατηρήσει κάποιον ποδοσφαιριστή με κίτρινη κάρτα.

Η Εθνική Νέων της Γαλλίας νίκησε με 1-0 την Αυστρία στο δημοτικό στάδιο της Κατερίνης, στην αναμέτρηση με την οποία ολοκληρώθηκε η πρώτη αγωνιστική στον 1ο όμιλο της τελικής φάσης του Ευρωπαϊκού Πρωταθλήματος, που ξεκίνησε σήμερα στην Ελλάδα. Το μοναδικό τέρμα της συνάντησης σημείωσε ο Μπλιν στο 34ο λεπτό, από ασίστ του Κορνέ.

Ο Βούλγαρος διαιτητής Γκεόργκι Καμπάκοφ απέβαλε (δύο κίτρινες) τον Γκλουχάκοβιτς στο 77ο λεπτό, ενώ παρατήρησε με κάρτες τους Ντιαλό και Κομάν.

Η Χιλή επικράτησε με 4-1 της Αργεντινής στη διαδικασία των πέναλτι (0-0 κανονική διάρκεια) στον τελικό του Κόπα Αμέρικα και κατέκτησε το τρόπαιο για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία της. Με σκυμμένο κεφάλι αποχώρησε από έναν ακόμη τελικό με την “αλμπισελέστε” ο Λέο Μέσι.

Έγραψε ιστορία η Χιλή! Η “ρόχα” επικράτησε με 4-1 στα πέναλτι της Αργεντινής στον τελικό του Κόπα Αμέρικα και κατέκτησε το πρώτο τρόπαιο στην ιστορία της. Δεύτερος συνεχόμενος χαμένος τελικό για το Λέο Μέσι με την “αλμπισελέστε” μετά από αυτόν του Μουντιάλ του 2014.

Η εξέλιξη του αγώνα

Με 4-3-1-2 παρέταξε τη διοργανώτρια Χιλή ο τεχνικός της ομάδας, Χόρχε Σαμπάολι, έχοντας τους Σάντσες και Βάργκας στην επίθεση και τον Αρτούρο Βιδάλ σε ελεύθερο ρόλο στο χώρο του κέντρου. Από την άλλη ο Χεράρδο Μαρτίνο επέλεξε για την Αργεντινή το κλασσικό 4-3-3 με την τριπλέτα Ντι Μαρία, Αγουέρο και Μέσι να δεσπόζει μπροστά.

“Διαβασμένη” φάνηκαν να είναι οι Χιλιανοί στο μαρκάρισμα του σούπερ-σταρ της “αλμπισελέστε”, Λέο Μέσι, τον οποίο δεν άφηναν να “πάρει ανάσα”, με δύο παίκτες συνεχώς κολλημένους επάνω του. Το ματς πήγε από νωρίς στη δύναμη, με τους διοργανωτές να μην θέλουν σε καμία περίπτωση να αφήσουν χώρους στην ταχύτατη επίθεση της Αργεντινής.

Η πρώτη σημαντική ευκαιρία καταγράφηκε στο 11ο λεπτό όταν ο Βιδάλ έκανε το γυριστό σουτ μέσα από την περιοχή, με τον Ρομέρο να βρίσκεται σε ετοιμότητα.

Η απάντηση της Αργεντινής στην ευκαιρία του Βιδάλ ήρθε εννιά λεπτά αργότερα. Ο Μέσι εκτέλεσε το φάουλ από πλάγια θέση αλλά την κεφαλιά του Αγκουέρο στο πρώτο δοκάρι απέκρουσε ο Μπράβο.

Άτυχος στάθηκε στο 25ο λεπτό ο Άνχελ Ντι Μαρία, ο οποίος υπέστη τράβηγμα και έγινε αναγκαστική αλλαγή, με τη θέση του να παίρνει ο Εζεκίελ Λαβέτσι. Η τελευταία καλή φάση για το πρώτο μέρος ήρθε στις καθυστερήσεις με τον Παστόρε να στρώνει όμορφα στον Λαβέτσι μετά από ατομική ενέργεια, αλλά το σουτ του τελευταίου απέκρουσε ο Μπράβο.

Η Αργεντινή ισορρόπησε κάπως το παιχνίδι στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο, κρατώντας τη κατοχή της μπάλας. Τα σκληρά μαρκαρίσματα συνεχίστηκαν όμως και στο 70′ ο Βιδάλ λίγο έλειψε να αποχωρήσει αναγκαστικά από το γήπεδο. Ωστόσο ο σκληροτράχηλος μέσος έδειξε να μην “μασάει” και συνέχισε κανονικά το παιχνίδι. Η κορυφαία φάση του δευτέρου 45λεπτου ανήκε στη Χιλή και είχε πρωταγωνιστή τον Αλέξις Σάντσες. Ο επιθετικός της “ρόχα” δέχθηκε μια υπέροχη μπαλιά μέσα στην περιοχή, έπιασε το γυριστό σουτ, όμως αυτό πέρασε ελάχιστα δίπλα από το δοκάρι του Ρομέρο.

Κι ενώ όλα έδειχναν πως δεν θα είχαμε άλλη φάση μέχρι τη λήξη του αγώνα, η Αργεντινή έφτασε μια “ανάσα” από το γκολ στο 92′ με τον Ιγκουαΐν να κάνει την προβολή από πλάγια θέση και τη μπάλα να καταλήγει στην εξωτερική πλευρά των διχτύων της Χιλής. Το 0-0 δεν άλλαξε και το ματς οδηγήθηκε στην παράταση.

Παράταση και πέναλτι

Η κούραση στα πόδια των 22 ποδοσφαιριστών ήταν εμφανής στο έξτρα χρόνο της παράτασης. Ο ρυθμός ήταν αργός με τις δύο ομάδες να κοιτούν πρωτίστως τα μετόπισθεν. Η Χιλή απείλησε πρώτη με τον Ντίας να επιχειρεί ένα σουτ εντός περιοχής στο 97ο λεπτό με τη μπάλα να περνά απελπιστικά άουτ. Στο φινάλε του πρώτου 15λέπτου ο Σάντσες έφυγε ταχύτατα στην αντεπίθεση με καλές προϋποθέσεις, όμως δεν κατάφερε να βρει στόχο.

Μια από τα ίδια και στο δεύτερο μέρος του έξτρα χρόνου. Καθαρό μυαλό δεν υπήρχε, με τους ποδοσφαιριστές να επιδίδονται κυρίως σε ατομικές προσπάθειες. Παράλληλα, οι κράμπες έκαναν κι αυτές την εμφάνισή τους, με το χρόνο να κυλάει χωρίς πολλές φάσεις. Κάπως έτσι λοιπόν οι δύο ομάδες οδηγήθηκαν στην παράταση προκειμένου να βρεθεί ο τελικός νικητής.

Εκεί οι Χιλιανοί ήταν εύστοχοι, εν αντιθέσει με τους Αργεντίνους και έφτασαν στην κατάκτηση του τροπαίου για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία τους. Να σημειωθεί πως ο Αλέξις Σάντσες που ανέλαβε την τελευταία εκτέλεση, δεν δίστασε να την κάνει αλά πανένκα!

Edgeworth Eagles put an end to Hamilton Olympic’s unbeaten run this season after recording a 3-1 victory in round 12 of the NPL competition.

In the opening minutes both teams struggled to control the ball as the match was played on a very heavy and bumpy Jack McLaughlan Oval.

The first good opportunity fell to Olympic when Pat Brown received the ball from the right, only to fire over the post.

Edgeworth gradually took control of the game with Olympic looking dangerous only on the break.

During a period of sustained pressure from the home side, Brody Taylor fired a shot onto the Olympic post, the rebound found another Edgeworth player whose shot was parried onto the other Olympic post by Danny Ireland and the rebound from this, fell in front of Ayden Brice who opened the score with a simple tap in.
Olympic replied shortly afterwards with Pat Brown firing over the crossbar from a fine cross by Simon Mooney.

Thirteen minutes before half time Bren Hammel received the ball outside the area and put in a defence splitting ball to Brody Taylor who, with only Danny Ireland to beat, had no problem making the score 2-0 for the home side.
A great save by Danny Ireland and a shot wide from a good position by Brody Taylor ensured the score remained 2-0 by the half time interval.

Olympic appeared to be giving the home side too much time and too much space in the first half.

At half time Ben Koina replaced Pat Brown and Cody Lucas took the place of Jason Korotkich.

Whatever was said by Michael Bolch at half time, Olympic came out firing in the second half. They looked hungrier, were first to the ball and won most 50-50 balls.

Within a minute, a well taken free kick by Simon Mooney resulted in Ben Smith being unable to hold the ball and the rebound was hammered into the Edgeworth net by Jacob Bailey.

Before the Olympic supporters could recover from their celebrations a great pass by Jacob Bailey to Kane Goodchild enabled the later to break from the right and with only the keeper to beat, fired his shot onto the Edgeworth post.

Simon Mooney then rounded half the Edgeworth defence from the right and after sending a low cross across the face of the home side’s goal, Michael Swan fired over the post.

By now, Olympic took control of the game and dictated play, while Edgeworth were reduced to simply counter attacking football.

During one of these counter attacks, a good cross from the right found the head of Ayden Brice who buried it into Danny Ireland’s net for a 3-1 lead!

The rest of the game was spent with Olympic pressing for a second goal and Edgeworth counter-attacking and looking for a fourth. The best clear cut chance for Olympic fell to Ben Koina who collected the ball from a poor clearance by Ben Smith but was unable to fire it into an empty net.

After this result, Olympic slips to second place on the table, 2 points behind Edgeworth.

Hamilton Olympic were held to a 2-2 draw by a spirited Adamstown Rosebud side in Round 11 of the NPL competition.

The home team made its intentions known to Adamstown in less than a minute of play when Matt Harper sent in a perfect cross from the right for Mathew Swan to fire over the crossbar. Simon Mooney had a shot blocked two minutes later and the Adamstown goalie saved a well taken free kick by the same player from outside the box, after Owen Littlewood brought down Rhys Cooper.
After twenty minutes of play Rhys Cooper found space from the left to curl a shot which narrowly missed the far post. Simon Mooney intercepted a poor clearance by Scott Carter three minutes later, and with only the keeper to beat, fires into the hands of Scott Carter.
Sustained pressure by Olympic with a free kick from outside the box and two consecutive corners leave the home crowd convinced that the match wasn’t going to be any easy afternoon for the home side. Adamstown appear to be playing with guts and determination and are definitely not sitting behind the ball to soak up pressure.
On the half hour mark Rosebud’s Daniel Clement sees a yellow card for a clumsy foul on Andrew Swan. Seven minutes later, a second poor clearance by Scott Carter is intercepted by Jacob Bailey who sees the Adamstown goalie off his line and sends a perfect curler from outside the box into an empty net to open up the score for Olympic 1-0!
Five minutes from the interval Rhys Cooper has the chance to make it 2-0 but with only the keeper to beat, is denied by a brilliant save from Scott Carter.
Seconds before half time, Adamstown break on the left with Nick Bale who is denied initially by Danny Ireland, but whose second shot finds the back of the net, to ensure that both teams go into half time locked at 1-1.
The second half resumed with Olympic going on the attack and Adamstown threatening on the break.
After four minutes of play Rhys Cooper received a cross from the left and riffled in a shot past an outstretched Scott Carter to put Olympic in front yet again, 2-1.
A shot wide from a good position by Kane Goodchild and a double save by Scott Carter from an effort by Rhys Cooper, denied Olympic from increasing the score.
Adamstown refused to crumble and increased the intensity of the game in search of the equaliser. Mathew Paul tested the Olympic defence with a free kick form outside the box, with the later stretched to clear the ball. Two consecutive corners by Adamstown force great saves by Danny Ireland.
Midway through the 2nd half, Adamstown appeal for a penalty claiming a hand ball inside the area with the referee awarding only a corner. From The corner Mathew Paul sends in a curling shot to the near post which Danny Ireland is unable to clear and Adamstown equalise 2-2.
The game continued to be in the balance with goal mouth action until the end. Despite a numerical advantage by Olympic after a red card was shown to Daniel Yaxley for his challenge on Pat Browne, the home side was unable to score for a 3rd time.
The draw finds Olympic still in 1st place but with only 1 point in front of Edgeworth who collected an away victory at Broadmeadow Magic and who Olympic play in Round 12!
Earlier in the day Olympic U22s beat Adamstown 5-3 and U19s 4-0.

Χρειάστηκαν 90 λεπτά χωρίς γκολ, να βγουν οκτώ κίτρινες κάρτες, αλλά και να εκτελεστούν 14 πέναλτι, για να προκριθεί η Αργεντινή, στα ημιτελικά του Κόπα Αμέρικα 2015.

Έχοντας απέναντί της τον εκπληκτικό Νταβίντ Οσπίνα, η Αργεντινή δεν μπόρεσε να βρει το δρόμο προς τα δίχτυα στην κανονική διάρκεια της αναμέτρησης, απέναντι στην Κολομβία, η οποία αμυνόταν μαζικά και σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις αντιαθλητικά.

The NPL returns this weekend with all the Round 11 fixtures set down for Sunday.

There are some important matchups, which could well decide the fate of several teams pushing for a finals birth and trying to avoid the drop.

NEWCASTLE JETS YOUTH v MAITLAND FC @ Cooks Square Park

Three points is vital for both teams. Maitland is only 2 points from the bottom and need another performance like their 4 nil win over South Cardiff to give themselves some breathing space. Jets Youth have been disappointing this season. To be honest they should be on top or at least in the top half. The Jets last win was in Round 5 against Charlestown City and since that game they have conceded 15 goals. It’s a different story for the Magpies who have won two of their last four including pushing title defenders Lambton and current leaders Hamilton all the way. So Maitland would have to go in as slight favourites, especially with the game at Cook Square Park.

HAMILTON OLYMPIC v ADAMSTOWN ROSEBUDS @ Darling Street

Fresh from a weekend off, Olympic will look to maintain their lead on top of the NPL when they host neighbours and rivals Adamstown Rosebuds. The Rosebuds bowed out of the FFA Cup last Sunday and it was their first loss in all competitions since early May. Hamilton has not suffered defeat in the NPL yet and they will be confident of continuing that trend in front of a strong Darling Street crowd. When these two last met it was a 2 all draw at Adamstown.

CHARLESTOWN CITY v LAMBTON JAFFAS @ Lisle Carr Field

It has been a season of ups and down for theses two clubs, unfortunately for the Blues their has been more downs. A win in Round 9 over then leaders Broadmeadow was followed up with a disappointing home defeat to Edgeworth. Lambton have turned an patchy start to the season around with three wins on the trot and now find themselves in the top 4 for the first time since Round 4. 10 goals in those past three victories has built a nice base for the defending champions to once again be a contender for the title. With Broadmeadow and Adamstown breathing down their neck, a slip up against Charlestown will see all their hard work go out the window. A crucial game for both teams, could just bring a load of goals.

BROADMEADOW v EDGEWORTH FC @ Magic Park

Last week these two showed great form to win their way through to the FFA Cup Round of 32. Edgeworth carried their NPL form into last weekends cup ties whilst the Magic had a form reversal after dropping from first to fifth on the NPL ladder in 3 weeks. Although Broadmeadow has lost their previous 3 NPL games they still boast the best attack in the league with 26 goals. Edgeworth are not far behind them with 21 but it’s there defence which holds the key to victory. When they last met in Round 3, it was a big win for the Magic 4-1. The biggest margin against the Eagles all year, so the Magic know a way past the Eagles defence which makes for an exciting clash at Magic Park this Sunday.

WESTON WORKERS v SOUTH CARDIFF @ Rockwell Automation Park

Last years runners-up have had a few indifferent performances of late. The Bears fell to Adamstown in Round 10 but had strong wins over Broadmeadow and Edgeworth but are they the real deal?

The Bears host a Gunners side desperate for a win and the lads from South Cardiff will be quietly confident of an upset as they defeated the Bears at Rockwell last season 1 nil. It hasn’t been the fortress in 2015 that Weston would have like either, with only 2 wins from 5 games. A win is vital for different reasons, it could just mean that this will produce plenty of goals.

THE question of where Roberto Firmino will fit in at Anfield – or, more pertinently, who will make way for the Brazilian – can be resolved another day.

Why Liverpool are prepared to spend up to almost £30m on the 1899 Hoffenheim attacker is far easier to answer.

In the past two seasons in the Bundesliga only Robert Lewandowski with 48 goals and assists and Thomas Muller with 46 have contributed more than Firmino, who has either scored, or provided the telling pass, for 44 strikes.

Now, consider that Liverpool have scored 153 league goals in the last two seasons.

Of that haul, 94 have been plundered by Luis Suarez (31), Raheem Sterling (16), Steven Gerrard (22) and Daniel Sturridge (25).

Suarez is long gone and, as it stands, the only player guaranteed to be at Anfield on the opening day of the season will be Sturridge and he will not be fit following hip surgery. In addition, that same quartet also conjured 46 assists.

Liverpool’s lack of attacking threat was all too clear last season as their fortunes flat-lined and the priority for manager Brendan Rodgers remains an out and out striker, with Christian Benteke still top of the wanted list despite a £32.5m buy-out clause.

But goals are also required from elsewhere in the starting XI and while Firmino may seem to be similar to his compatriot Philippe Coutinho, and also Adam Lallana, in favouring a No10 role but able to play elsewhere, his ability to affect games would be a boon to a team that begins the campaign under pressure.

For context, Coutinho has 22 goals and assists in the last two seasons at Liverpool and, in his sole year at Anfield, Lallana boasts eight.

Rodgers is likely to revert to a back four next season and play 4-3-3 with the option of deploying a midfield diamond if he manages to recruit another top class attacker. His first choice midfield seems set to be Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and James Milner.

A front three of Coutinho-Sturridge-Firmino would be a possible permutation, although one which may not leave Lallana enthused let alone Danny Ings, Jordon Ibe or Lazar Markovic.

If Firmino signs and is to perform in an attacking triumvirate, then a willingness to work hard is essential and, here, more number crunching throws up some interesting answers.

As well as scoring goals and conjuring assists, Firmino made 175 tackles in a Hoffenheim shirt over the last two seasons, a tally bettered by only five players in the whole of the German top flight.

He does not need comparisons with Alexis Sanchez, last summer’s Holy Grail, but clearly Liverpool hope he can be something similar.

This may all seem too stat-orientated – marking Firmino potentially out as a ‘typical’ Fenway Sports Group signing, especially at the age of 23.

But then it is worth noting that of the 25 players Bob Paisley signed during his nine years in charge only two were over the age of 25.

One was goalkeeper Bob Wardle (aged 27) and the other? Kenny Dalglish at 26.

Too much emphasis is placed on the machinations of Liverpool’s transfer group because too often the end product has been utterly underwhelming.

Yet the deal for Firmino would begin to address some long-standing questions and concerns about Liverpool’s owners.

Getting the transfer over the line has been no mean feat given there is an element of third-party ownership and chief executive Ian Ayre has moved quickly by flying to Chile, where Firmino is playing in the Copa America, to ensure there are no last minute hitches.

At the same time it would indicate FSG’s willingness to spend money although the millions already lavished should not leave them open to scrutiny on that.

Sterling may well leave and pay for Firmino and a bit more besides, but at this point Manchester City could also walk away.

The deal would also demonstrate a willingness to back Rodgers, who is in the process of freshening up his backroom staff after surviving his end of season review following last season’s travails.

The one question that remains outstanding is whether Firmino can succeed in the cut and thrust of the Premier League and translate the figures that look so impressive in Germany in English football.

Liverpool, cock-a-hoop at pulling off what they believe to be a transfer coup, will be happy trying to find out.
