Nominated as one of the best youth players of the year, Dimitri Petratos is staying with Brisbane Roar for at least three years

Dimitri Petratos has sunk his shoes firmly into the Queensland soil and will stay with 2013/14 A-League champions Brisbane Roar for three years.

The 21-year-old Greek Australian already signed a contract extension in January, but further extended his time at the Roar this week, meaning he will be at the club at least until the 2016/17 season.

A youth team recruit, Petratos blossomed under the tutelage of coach Mike Mulvey in Brisbane, managing to hold down a regular place in the Roar side since joining the Queensland club in July 2013.

He netted five goals in the 2013/14 campaign and was also nominated for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year in January, after an impressive hat-trick against his former club Sydney FC on Boxing Day.

Petratos said one of the reasons for staying on with the team was to continue learning at a high level.

“I am enjoying my football here in Brisbane which is important but I’m also learning every day from the coaches and other players which is just as important,” he said.

“I’m proud to be a part of this club and I’m really looking forward to the season coming up.”

Petratos helped the team in its FFA Cup qualifications last week, with his assistance, the team managed to score four goals and a clean sheet against
Stirling Lions.

He is also joined by teammate and club veteran Luke Brattan, who signed on till the end of the 2016/7 season.

Brattan has been a part of the Roar set-up since 2008, coming through the Foxtel National Youth League ranks as an emerging talent but only properly finding his feet after head coach Mike Mulvey gave him a starting berth in January 2013.

He said signing on for more time at Roar was not a tough decision.

“It was an easy decision to make, I love Brisbane and I love this club,” Brattan said.

“I want to continue to work hard and bring more success to Brisbane Roar.”

Head coach Mulvey said he was excited to see what the two will do in this season’s premiership and championship as well as their Westfield FFA Cup and AFC Champions League campaigns.

“Luke and Dimi are two players who grew before our eyes last season,” Mulvey said.

“They both made telling contributions to our team’s success and I’m absolutely delighted they’ve decided to extend their time with Brisbane Roar.”

Greece coach Claudio Ranieri has left out six players who helped Greece make it to the World Cup last 16

New Greece coach Claudio Ranieri announced a 24-man squad for the first Euro 2016 qualifier against Romania at home on September 7.

Earning a first-time call up were Olympiakos 21-year-old striker Dimitris Diamantakos and Levante’s 29-year-old defender Nikos Karabelas.

Ranieri left out six players who helped Greece make it to the World Cup last 16. He selected six players from Greek champions Olympiakos and seven players from Italian clubs.

The 62-year-old Italian coach took over from Portugal’s Fernando Santos, who quit after taking Greece to the World Cup.

The Reds enjoyed another impressive display at White Hart Lane, bouncing back from defeat against Manchester City to record a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Liverpool were too strong for Tottenham at White Hart Lane today, exposing inexperience in the Spurs back line on the way to a 3-0 win.

Both teams looked shaky at the back, but when the chances came for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, they were unable to take any of them.

The Reds were much cooler in front of goal, with goals for Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard and new man Alberto Moreno.

The visitors struggled with the pace and power of Daniel Sturridge and Sterling in particular, who will have had England fans salivating with great attacking displays, while Mario Balotelli did plenty of the right things on his debut – hassling, harrying and closing down the ball – even if his shooting was wayward.

5 things we learned as the Reds strolled to victory at White Hart Lane:

1) Balotelli has colourful boots to fill

Mario Balotelli was impressive off the ball, but appeared to have left his shooting boots in Italy.

The Italian took to the field with one pink and one turquoise boot on his debut for Liverpool, but was uninvolved in the goals.

In fact, for all of Liverpool’s new signings this summer, it was some familiar-looking names that combined to give the Reds the lead: Sturridge and Henderson with some nice link-up play, before the midfielder flashed a great ball to the back post where Sterling cooly slotted home.

Liverpool will need big things from the promising triumvirate this year if they are to build on last season and they certainly delivered this afternoon.

Roy Hodgson will hope they can perform this well when they pull on the Three Lions shirt.

Already, the rest of the team look to be sharing the load following Luis Suarez’s departure, and the visitors looked dangerous whenever they came forward.

But Brendan Rodgers will need consistency from this group over the season – and will be hoping that Balotelli is the big-game player the Reds were missing against City earlier this week.

Not every team will be as generous at the back as Spurs were today.

2) Spurs still have some way to go

Despite an impressive start to the season, Tottenham were all over the place at the back for much of this afternoon – at one point Sterling ghosted past three players in the box like they weren’t even there.

But at least they didn’t lose 5-0 again, even if they could have conceded that many with the chances Liverpool created and the danger they displayed on the counter.

This fixture was a low point for the North London club last year, and represented a nadir for Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked a day later.

Much of the problem for Spurs last season was the managerial instability that hung over White Hart Lane and refused to dissipate.

Today wasn’t great either, but with time Mauricio Pochettino will hope to improve the way that Tottenham handle the league’s stronger sides.

You have to wonder, though, if he has the right players to close the gap on those that finished above them last year.

What Spurs lack is a match winner who can change a game –  the player they lost when Gareth Bale went to Real Madrid.

Today, Eric Lamella was anonymous, while Christian Eriksen struggled to create any incisive openings and Emmanuel Adebayor was more impressive off the ball than on it.

3) Liverpool pressing their case…

Liverpool looked the most dangerous of the two teams for most of the game and a big part of that was down to how they pressed whenever Spurs had the ball, forcing several mistakes and turnovers in dangerous areas of the field.

We know how exciting Brendan Rodgers’ side can be when they have the ball, but a one of the deciding factors in whether they have a good year will be if they can continue to work as hard when they don’t have it.

They looked impressive for large spells today, despite some mistakes at the back (something of which both teams were guilty), but it’s easy to look good in August.

With potentially 60 games on the cards for the Reds this season, a big question mark hangs over whether they will be able to maintain such high intensity while juggling a European campaign on the one hand and inevitable injuries on the other.

4) …but Gerrard is a weak link

Steven Gerrard called time on his international career after a disappointing World Cup in order to save himself for Liverpool. The midfielder is a club legend, no two ways about it, but at 34 years of age, his good performances are starting to appear fewer and further between.

Today, the Reds skipper had a stinker and Spurs appeared happy to let him have the ball. From his deep-lying position, he couldn’t resist attempting the Hollywood balls, spraying it left and then right – and Pochettino’s men were there to pick up the loose ball time and again.

Still, his accuracy was better 12 yards from goal, with the Liverpool captain slotting home his side’s second from the penalty spot.

5) Dier not the finished article yet

Eric Dier has been one of the summer’s most impressive acquisitions at this early stage of the season. Despite his position off to the side and back from the middle of the park, the youngster – who was purchased from Sporting Lisbon for just £4million – has taken centre stage for Spurs so far.

It was he who came up with the last-minute winner at Upton Park on the opening weekend, and the England Youth international also put his name on the scoresheet against QPR.

Today was an altogether-more difficult proposition for the youngster, who struggled – along with the rest of Tottenham’s back line – with the pace and running power of Liverpool’s attack.

He was lucky to escape without a card for a bruising challenge on Balotelli in the first half and temporarily lost his head when he pulled back Joe Allen in the box to give away a penalty, from which Gerrard scored Liverpool’s second.

Σε σόου του Ραχίμ Στέρλινγκ εξελίχθηκε ακόμα ένα ευχάριστο απόγευμα της Λίβερπουλ στο “Γουάτ Χαρτ Λέιν”. Το 3-0 επί της Τότεναμ προήλθε χάρη στις εξαιρετικές προσπάθειες του νεαρού Άγγλου, την ώρα που ο Ιταλός φορ, στο ντεμπούτο του, έχασε σωρεία ευκαιριών.

Μόλις στο 8ο λεπτό, ο 18χρονος Άγγλος τελείωσε μία ομαδική προσπάθεια από δεξιά και έδωσε προβάδισμα στους φιλοξενούμενους. Κάπου εκεί άρχισε και το κρεσέντο ευκαιριών του Super Mario, που βρισκόταν στην κατάλληλη θέση, αλλά δεν είχε το κατάλληλο τελείωμα. Ο Ιταλός θα μπορούσε να κάνει χατ τρικ εάν ήταν πιο εύστοχος, ενώ θα μπορούσε να κερδίσει και αποβολές αντιπάλων, εάν τα μαρκαρίσματα εναντίον του τιμωρούνταν με κάρτες. Η παρουσία του, πάντως, προσέφερε μία θετική αύρα στην επίθεση των φιλοξενουμένων, που διπλασίασαν τα τέρματά τους με το 43ο πέναλτι του Στίβεν Τζέραρντ για τη Λίβερπουλ (ρεκόρ).

Ο αρχηγός των “κόκκινων” έγινε ο πρώτος παίκτης στην ιστορία τους που σκοράρει για 16 σερί σεζόν, ενώ για… πρώτη σεζόν σκόραρε ο Αλμπέρτο Μορένο με ένα σόλο από αριστερά στο 60ό λεπτό. Άγγλος στο ραντεβού του ο Κώστας Μήτρογλου. Λίγο πριν τις 04:00, ο Έλληνας άσος πάτησε το πόδι του στο «Ελ. Βενιζέλος» προκειμένου να ντυθεί ξανά στα ερυθρόλευκα.

Επί ελληνικού εδάφους βρίσκεται απ’ τις 04:00 τα ξημερώματα ο Κώστας Μήτρογλου! Όπως αναμενόταν, ο Έλληνας άσος ταξίδεψε από Αγγλία με προορισμό το «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος» προκειμένου να ολοκληρώσει την επιστροφή του στον Ολυμπιακό.

Τον ευδιάθετο, αλλά και κουρασμένο απ’ το ταξίδι «Μητρογκόλ» υποδέχθηκε μέλος της διοίκησης των Πειραιωτών, ενώ το «παρών» στο αεροδρόμιο έδωσε και ο NovaΣΠΟΡ FM.

Ο παίκτης αναμένεται την Κυριακή να περάσει από ιατρικές εξετάσεις και στη συνέχεια να ανακοινωθεί και επίσημα η απόκτησή του απ’ τους πρωταθλητές Ελλάδας, με την μορφή δανεισμού, αφού υπάρχει οριστική συμφωνία με τη Φούλαμ.

However, with his antics come goals – Balotelli scoring 26 Serie A goals in 43 appearances for Milan, having put 20 balls in the back of the net for City in 54 league matches.

Rodgers said he has had to curb Balotelli’s ego – informing him that Steven Gerrard will be taking penalties ahead of the Italian, and also denying him a chance to announce himself on Merseyside with a press conference.

“If you’d have seen Mario in training, he’s been out for 45 minutes doing extra work on free-kicks and penalties,” Rodgers said.

“And yes, he has asked who takes the penalties. He’s brilliant at it. And he knows it as well.

“But Steven Gerrard is the penalty-taker. Mario has been told that. He understands the situation.”

Rodgers added: “Mario came in and we were asked about the press conference. I replied: ‘What press conference?’ There wasn’t one for Adam Lallana or Lazar Markovic.

“It was a case of: ‘Get up the stairs, hold the shirt, get your photograph taken and get straight out.’

“You can make them feel as if they are more than what they are. Then the ego goes with it.”

Rodgers continued to chant his ‘team first’ mantra, despite Balotelli’s signing potentially a polarising one for the club whose anthem is ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

“Everything he does off the field gets monitored and looked at,” the former Swansea City boss said.

“He does kind things and, yes, stupid ones.

“He is a guy who I believe can help us. But he’s not the star. The star of the team is the team.”

He added: “But Mario’s a good player, a talented boy, and just 24 years of age. My message to him is: ‘Work your socks off, listen, and then your undoubted talent will come through.'”

Claudio Ranieri has promised to give young players a chance after being officially presented as the new coach of Greece.

The much-travelled Italian signed a two-year deal in July to have his first crack at international coaching after the contract of his predecessor Fernando Santos expired following the World Cup in Brazil.

Under Santos, Greece reached the last 16 for the first time before losing to Costa Rica on penalties.

“I’m very happy to coach the national team of Greece and, although I had other proposals, I chose this one operating on instinct,» Ranieri told a news conference on Friday.

“I came here to take the team as high as possible. Our immediate aim is to qualify for Euro 2016 in France – it won’t be easy but we have the potential and the talent to succeed.

“It’s a great challenge. I believe in young players and there will be ample opportunities for them to show their potential,» added the 62-year-old former coach of Monaco, Chelsea, Valencia, Parma, Juventus, AS Roma and Inter Milan.

“I am very interested in working with the younger players, who are the future of the team, and I will be in contact with the clubs in an effort to work with them on a regular basis.”

Ranieri’s first match in charge will be a home Euro 2016 qualifier against Romania on September 7.

Εκεί που “γκέλαρε” πέρυσι, γκέλαρε και φέτος ο Ολυμπιακός. Οι ”ερυθρόλευκοι” άφησαν δύο βαθμούς στο Αγρίνιο, μένοντας στο 1-1 με τον Παναιτωλικό. Σκόραρε για δεύτερο συνεχόμενο ματς ο Παϊτίμ Κασάμι, ενώ τραυματίες αποχώρησαν Μανιάτης-Εντινγκά. Το γκολ της ισοφάρισης για τους γηπεδούχους πέτυχε ο Κούσας με κεφαλιά.

Ο Μίτσελ επέλεξε ένα 4-3-3 με του Μποτία και Αμπιντάλ να αποτελούν το αμυντικό δίδυμο, στα φτερά της άμυνας ξεκίνησαν οι Ελαμπντελαουί και Μαζουακού, ενώ στο χώρο της μεσαίας γραμμής βρέθηκαν οι Μανιάτης – Εντινγκά και μπροστά τους, ο Τσόρι Ντομίνγκες. Όσον αφορά τους πλάγιους επιθετικούς, εκεί ξεκίνησαν οι Ντοσεβί και Ντουρμάζ, με τον Διαμαντάκο στην κορυφή της επίθεσης.

Ο προπονητής του Παναιτωλικού, Μάκης Χάβος παρέταξε την ομάδα του με σύστημα 4-2-3-1 και από νωρίς έδειξε διάθεση να “κάνει” παιχνίδι και όχι να κλειστεί στα καρέ της, περιμένοντας τον Ολυμπιακό. Ο ρυθμός από τα πρώτα κιόλας λεπτά ήταν καλός, με τους γηπεδούχους να απειλούν την εστία του Ρομπέρτο σε μία-δύο περιπτώσεις.

Στη συνέχεια ο ρυθμός έπεσε. Ο Παναιτωλικός θέλησε να πάει το ματς στη δύναμη και να κρατήσει στο 0 τον Ολυμπιακό. Κάτι που πέτυχε μέχρι το τέλος του πρώτο ημιχρόνου.

Με το ξεκίνημα του δευτέρου μέρους όμως, ο Μίτσελ πέρασε στο παιχνίδι τον Κασάμι στη θέση του Ντοσεβί. Ο Ελβετός μέσα σε ένα λεπτό κατάφερε να ανοίξει το σκορ με πανέμορφη κεφαλιά, σκοράροντας μάλιστα για δεύτερο συνεχόμενο ματς.

Δύο λεπτά αργότερα, ο Διαμαντάκος παρά λίγο να σκοράρει κι αυτός, αλλά ο τερματοφύλακας του Παναιτωλικού κατάφερε να αποκρούσει. Στα επόμενα λεπτά ο Ολυμπιακός έδειχνε να θέλει να παγώσει το παιχνίδι και να κρατήσει το υπέρ του 1-0. Η ατυχία χτύπησε την πόρτα των πρωταθλητών στο 75ο λεπτό, όταν έγινε αναγκαστική αλλαγή ο Μανιάτης, ο οποίος αποχώρησε τραυματίας.

O Παναιτωλικός προσπάθησε, πάλεψε και τελικά δικαιώθηκε στο 79ο λεπτό. Μετά από καλή εκτέλεση κόρνερ του Θεοδωρίδη, ο Κούσας σηκώθηκε ψηλότερα από όλους και με κεφαλιά, ισοφάρισε για την ομάδα του. Στο 83ο λεπτό ο Μίτσελ είδε ακόμη έναν παίκτη του να φεύγει τραυματίας, αυτή τη φορά τον Εντινγκά και οι “ερυθρόλευκοι”, οι οποίοι είχαν κλείσει τις αλλαγές τους, τελείωσαν το ματς με 10 παίκτες. Το σκορ δεν άλλαξε μέχρι το σφύριγμα της λήξης και οι Αγρινιώτες πήραν έναν πολύτιμο βαθμό.

MVP

Ο Τσόρι Ντομίνγκες ήταν ο γνωστός… Τσόρι. Έτρεξε, δημιούργησε ευκαιρίες για την ομάδα του, ενώ είχε και μια ευκαιρία να σκοράρει. Σχεδόν όλο το παιχνίδι του Ολυμπιακού περνούσε από τα πόδια του Αργεντινού και όχι άδικα.

Αδύναμος κρίκος

Ο Ολυμπιακός δεν φημίζεται για την αμυντική του γραμμή και το έδειξε και στο ματς στο Αγρίνιο. Οι Μποτία-Αμπιντάλ επέτρεψαν στους παίκτες του Παναιτωλικού να απειλήσουν σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις την εστία του Ρομπέρτο κι αυτό είναι κάτι που θα πρέπει να διορθώσει ο Μίτσελ ενόψει των δύσκολων αναμετρήσεων που έρχονται για το Champions League.

“Δύναμη” του Παναιτωλικού θα αποτελέσει για ακόμη μια χρονιά η καυτή του έδρα. Οι Αγρινιώτες έδειξαν ότι στο γήπεδό τους θα μπορέσουν να κοιτάξουν στα μάτια όλους τους “μεγάλους” του πρωταθλήματος. Στο παιχνίδι κόντρα στον Ολυμπιακό δεν έδειξαν να φοβούνται από τα ονόματα στο ρόστερ των “ερυθρολεύκων”. Οι γηπεδούχοι ξεκίνησαν δυναμικά, απειλώντας μάλιστα να σκοράρουν πρώτοι στον αγώνα.

Οι παίκτες του Μίτσελ ένιωσαν πως το ματς τελείωσε στο 1-0 του Κασάμι και από το σημείο αυτό και μετά κατέβασαν ταχύτητα. Ο Παναιτωλικός το εκμεταλλεύτηκε και με την κεφαλιά του Κούσα πήρε έναν πολύτιμο βαθμό. Ο Ολυμπιακός πάντως θα πρέπει να ανησυχεί περισσότερο για τους τραυματισμούς των Μανιάτη-Εντινγκά παρά για τη γκέλα στο Αγρίνιο.

Ένα ματς που οι λάτρεις του επιθετικού ποδοσφαίρου θα βλέπουν και θα ξαναβλέπουν σε video πραγματοποιήθηκε στο “Γκούντισον Παρκ”, όπου η Τσέλσι επικράτησε 6-3 της Έβερτον. Εννέα γκολ, 29 τελικές προσπάθειες, ο Σάμουελ Ετό σκόραρε στο ντεμπούτο του και, μάλιστα, κατά της πρώην ομάδας του, ο Ντιέγκο Κόστα έβαλε δύο γκολ… Αυτά και άλλα πολλά συνέβησαν στο τρομερό ματς του “Γκούντισον Παρκ”, όπου η Τσέλσι επικράτησε 6-3 της Έβερτον.

Τα “ζαχαρωτά” προέρχονταν από τέσσερις νίκες στα πέντε τελευταία εντός έδρας ματς πρωταθλήματος με τους “μπλε”, εντούτοις το ξεκίνημα ήταν εφιαλτικό για εκείνα, αφού ο Ντιέγκο Κόστα χρειάστηκε μόλις 35 δευτερόλεπτα για να ανοίξει το σκορ κι ο Μπράνοσλαβ Ιβάνοβις διπλασίασε τα γκολ στο 3ο λεπτό.

Στην εκπνοή του πρώτου ημιχρόνου ο Κέβιν Μιραλάς μείωσε και ακολούθησε… πόλεμος. Η Τσέλσι πήρε εκ νέου προβάδισμα δύο γκολ με το αυτογκόλ του Σίμους Κόουλμαν στο 67′, ο Στίβεν Νέισμιθ απάντησε άμεσα, ο Νεμάνια Μάτιτς βρήκε δίχτυα στην πρώτη εφετινή τελική του προσπάθεια, ο νεοεισελθών Σάμουελ Ετό “πλήγωσε” τον Ζοζέ Μουρίνιο στο 76′ και ο Ραμίρες έγραψε το 3-5 στο 78′.

Το ματς όδευε προς το φινάλε και όλα έδειχναν ότι τα πολλά γκολ του θα σημειωθούν από ισάριθμους σκόρερ, εντούτοις ο Ντιέγκο Κόστα χάλασε το… γλυκό, αφού έβαλε το κερασάκι στην τούρτα λίγες στιγμές πριν από το τελευταίο σφύριγμα.

Ήττα-σοκ με 1-0 από την Στόουκ γνώρισε η Μάντσεστερ Σίτι στο “Έτιχαντ” και, βέβαια, ο μη καταλογισμός πέναλτι στον Γιάγια Τουρέ (στην εκπνοή) δεν μπορεί να αποτελέσει άλλοθι από τη στιγμή που στο 19ο λεπτό δεν δόθηκε πέναλτι στον Μαμέ Μπιράμ Ντιούφ.

Οι πρωταθλητές Αγγλίας, που άρχισαν με βασικό τον Σέρχιο Αγκουέρο για πρώτη φορά εφέτος, είχαν συντριπτική κατοχή στο μεγαλύτερο διάστημα, άγγιξαν το γκολ στις καθυστερήσεις του πρώτου ημιχρόνου με τον Γιάγια Τουρέ (δοκάρι σε εν κινήσει πλασέ), ενώ στάθηκαν άτυχοι, αφού τραυματίστηκε νωρίς-νωρίς ο Φερναντίνιο.

Η Στόουκ προηγήθηκε στο 58ο λεπτό μετά από τρομερή ατομική προσπάθεια του Ντιούφ, ο οποίος άρχισε την κούρσα του λίγο μπροστά από τη μεγάλη περιοχή της ομάδας του και την ολοκλήρωσε με εύστοχο πλασέ κάτω από τα πόδια του Τζο Χαρτ. Όπως ήταν φυσικό, η Σίτι “εγκαταστάθηκε” στα αντίπαλα καρέ για το γκολ της ισοφάρισης, αλλά πλήρωσε το γεγονός ότι μόλις δύο από τις 16 τελικές της είχαν κατεύθυνση προς την εστία.

Το πολυαναμενόμενο ντεμπούτο του Άνχελ ντι Μαρία (αγωνίστηκε για 69 λεπτά στην τετράδα της μεσαίας γραμμής πίσω από τον Χουάν Μάτα και ήταν μέτριος) δεν έφερε γούρι στην Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ, η οποία ήταν τραγική σε ακόμη ένα ματς και, μοιραία, έμεινε στο 0-0 με την Μπέρνλι.

Τρία μόλις λεπτά μετά τη σέντρα οι γηπεδούχοι είχαν δοκάρι σε απευθείας εκτέλεση φάουλ του Ντέιβιντ Τζόουνς, ενώ οι φιλοξενούμενοι απάντησαν στο 15′ με ένα χαμένο τετ-α-τετ του Ρόμπιν φαν Πέρσι.

Στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο ο Ντι Μαρία προωθήθηκε για να ενισχυθεί η γραμμή κρούσης των “κόκκινων διαβόλων” και στο 59′ δημιούργησε μία καλή ευκαιρία που απώλεσε ο Φαν Πέρσι, αλλά επί της ουσίας δεν άλλαξε κάτι. Ο Αργεντινός ταλαιπωρήθηκε από κράμπες και, μοιραία, αποχώρησε, ενώ στο τελευταίο 20λεπτο οι παίκτες του Λουίς φαν Χάαλ δεν απείλησαν.
