EPL: Stoke scalp Manchester City 1-0

1285760_AMN

Diouf causes shockwaves in the EPL by putting Stoke 1-0 up at Man City

Visiting teams don’t win at the Etihad. Especially not visiting teams like Stoke City. But Manchester City’s first loss of the season does indeed come at home, and it does indeed come at the hands of former boss Mark Hughes and his rather industrious side.

It’s a shock result for the defending champions, who only lost one Premier League match on home turf last season, and it means a very early shakeup in the title race.

Stoke, as expected, put up fairly stiff resistance in the first half, flying into tackles and looking to pick off their hosts on the counterattack. And the Potters might have considered themselves unlucky not to go into halftime with the lead — they were denied what looked like a clear-cut penalty after Aleksandar Kolarov felled Mame Biram Diouf.

But that was perhaps the only real moment of promise from the visitors’ perspective, and Manchester City were suffering from their share of bad luck as well. Star striker Sergio Agüero went down with a knock within the first two minutes, and although he bounced back Fernando wasn’t so fortunate, pulling his groin around the half-hour mark and being substituted for Fernandinho shortly thereafter.

City had their chances, too. Samir Nasri forced Asmir Begovic into a decent stop at the near post after Bacary Sagna found the midfielder with a smart cutback early on, and Yaya Touré clipped the crossbar just before the break following superb work from Agüero and Kolarov to tee him up.

The hosts continued to pour on the pressure, and they came very close to making the breakthrough after a Victor Moses clearance was deflected back into Touré’s path. The Ivorian’s snapshot was just about parried onto the roof of the net by a flying save from Begovic — and from the corner it was Stoke who took the lead.

It was a classic counterattack. The ball popped out to Diouf on the run, who shrugged off Kolarov, he powered up the pitch, did Fernandinho with a clever move and, finding himself free on goal, slotted past the unfortunate Joe Hart to give the Potters a shock 1-0 lead. And Diouf might have doubled their advantage just seconds later — halftime substitute Peter Odemwingie’s cross barely escaped the striker in the six-yard box after Martín Demichelis lost his run.

Manuel Pellegrini responded by throwing Edin Dzeko and Jesus Navas and switching into a more traditional-looking 4-4-2. That opened the game up, and the two sides began exchanging chances. Agüero shot into Marc Wilson’s arm at one end; Peter Crouch nodded wide at the other. But the momentum was mostly with City, and Stoke were forced into ever-more-desperate defending.

Miraculously, it held, although it needed some help from referee Lee Mason, who booked Touré for getting kicked by Marc Muniesa in the 87th minute when a penalty looked more likely. A pair of speculative efforts across the face of goal later, and the Potters had a memorable — and immensely surprising — three points.

Manchester City starting lineup (4-2-2-2): Joe Hart; Aleksandar Kolarov, Martín Demichelis, Vincent Kompany, Bacary Sagna; Yaya Touré, Fernando (Fernandinho 38′); Samir Nasri (Jesus Navas 63′), David Silva; Stevan Jovetic (Edin Dzeko 63′), Sergio Agüero.

Stoke City starting lineup (4-4-2): Asmir Begovic; Erik Pieters, Marc Wilson, Ryan Shawcross, Phil Bardsley; Victor Moses (Marc Muniesa 80′), Steven Nzonzi, Glenn Whelan, Jonathan Walters (Peter Odemwingie 45′ (Charlie Adam 65′)); Peter Crouch, Mame Biram Diouf.

Goals: Diouf 58′.

EPL: Burnley – Manchester Utd 0-0, the misery continues

1285470_AMN

Manchester United’s wait for a first win of the season continues after a 0-0 draw in the Barclays Premier League against newly promoted Burnley at Turf Moor.

Louis van Gaal was able to field Angel di Maria for the first time following his £59.7 million move from Real Madrid, but United failed to impress despite occasional flashes of brilliance from British football’s most expensive signing.

Having failed to beat Swansea City or Sunderland before a midweek League Cup exit at the hands of MK Dons, Van Gaal’s men could have few complaints with the result despite having late penalty claims turned down when substitute Ashley Barnes appeared to handle a shot from Ashley Young.

Burnley had opportunities to emulate the 1-0 victory they secured when the sides last met at Turf Moor in August 2009, with David Jones coming the closest to a goal when striking the crossbar early on. Sean Dyche’s side will take heart from claiming a first Barclays Premier League point of the season, following defeats to Chelsea and Swansea.

An unchanged Burnley came roaring out of the blocks and twice came close to punishing defensive errors in the opening five minutes. Former United midfielder Jones curled a left-footed free-kick against the woodwork after Phil Jones had fouled Lukas Jutkiewicz.

David de Gea was beaten on that occasion, but the goalkeeper made an important stop to deny Jutkiewicz within 60 seconds after a sloppy backpass from Jonny Evans.

The injury-hit visitors, still without Marcos Rojo as the Argentina defender awaits a work permit, gradually settled, with Di Maria offering early glimpses of his talent.

A wonderful ball over the top from the Argentinian led to Robin van Persie being superbly denied by Tom Heaton, who blocked his shot across goal.

Di Maria, who replaced Tom Cleverley in United’s starting XI, played a glorious pass on the spin during another attack that ended with Juan Mata slipping as he looked to shoot.

However, after soaking up some pressure Burnley soon threatened again, with Scott Arfield heading wide from a Jutkiewicz cross and Jones testing De Gea with a powerful half-volley.

Young saw an appeal for a spot-kick waved away before the break, having gone down under a challenge from Kieran Trippier.

The second half started slowly, but Dean Marney was forced to clear a Van Persie shot off the line in the 59th minute following more good work from Di Maria.

Van Persie nodded a Darren Fletcher cross over the bar two minutes later, while Matt Taylor could have done better at the other end as he shot at De Gea.

Di Maria and Van Persie were withdrawn in quick succession thereafter and United were unable to find a breakthrough despite penning their opponents back in the closing stages.

Burnley manager Dean Dyche: “People have a way of looking at teams and how they play.In the Premier League, it’s rare to find even a longer pass. They tend to play all short and sharp.

“That’s for others to decide how productive that can be. I know what I think is productive football, most of you have seen it last season, and we play some fantastic stuff.

“It’s productive, but it’s good to watch, the fans enjoy it and it does get points on the board. It’s a tougher challenge this season but that’s what I believe in, that’s what the players believe in and I think they delivered it very well.

“We come away pleased with a point, but I’m more pleased or as pleased with the performance.”

“The market has moved forward; we’ve got some money for the first time in a long time and yet the market has jumped forward to a level where it’s very difficult,” he added. We’ve been first in and first out to a number of situations, which were ones we thought we could progress.

“I really like the group you’ve seen today, I like the way they operate, but we do want strength in depth and people who can challenge to move us even further forward.”

Manchester United Louis van Gaal: “We were the stronger team, certainly in the second half. Of course the progress is there, but you have to win. A club as [big as] Manchester United have to win. When you have two points [out] of [a possible] nine… that is disappointing.”

“When we play against Queens Park Rangers [after the international break], [Marcos] Rojo shall have a permit.”

Match Preview: Tottenham vs Liverpool

imagesP5QYBBH2

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers does not want Mario Balotelli’s potential debut to divert focus ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Premier League.

The Italy forward is in line for his Liverpool bow at White Hart Lane, having arrived from AC Milan on Monday amid plenty of excitement on Merseyside. Formerly of Manchester City, Balotelli returns to the Barclays Premier League after acknowledging his exit from the English top flight was a “mistake”.

The 24-year-old scored 26 goals in 43 league appearances for Milan and Rodgers will be keen for the striker to boost a Liverpool side yet to hit top gear this season. A narrow 2-1 win over Southampton was followed by a 3-1 defeat to champions Manchester City.

Balotelli scored the winning goal for City the last time he faced Spurs, and Rodgers has been pleased with his latest recruit’s attitude in training this week.

“Mario is fine, he has settled in very well,” Rodgers said. “He has looked fantastic in training and he is a good lad. The focus is very much on his football and he has done very well.

“This is not the Mario Balotelli show. He’s a good player and a talented player but he has a lot of work to do here. We’ve got a number of top-class players. The star of this team will always be the team.”

Adam Lallana is in contention to make his Liverpool debut after recovering from a knee injury. The England midfielder has not yet featured for the Merseyside club since his transfer from Southampton after sustaining knee ligament damage during the pre-season tour of the United States.

Liverpool gave a positive outlook on Lallana’s fitness on Friday, though, revealing that the 26-year-old will be in the squad to face a Spurs side who have made a bright start under Mauricio Pochettino, Lallana’s head coach at Southampton last season.

“Adam will be in the squad, for sure,” Rodgers said. “He has looked fantastic in training. Of course he is well short of match fitness but in training for the last couple of weeks he has been exceptional.”

The Liverpool manager stated that Glen Johnson (thigh) is unlikely to be ready for the trip to White Hart Lane and he will monitor the fitness of fellow full-back Alberto Moreno (ankle).

Rodgers also expects more activity in the transfer window ahead of Monday’s deadline, with players set to leave the club rather than arrive.

“There’ll probably be more movement out than coming in, I would say,” he added. “We’ve still got offers for players to go. Every player here knows their situation, so if they’re here after that deadline on Monday then they’ve decided to stay but their game time will be very limited. “At this moment in time, there are not many more to come in, if any.”

Jordon Ibe is one player to have left Anfield on Friday, sealing a season-long loan move to Derby County.

Spurs have demonstrated fine form at the start of Pochettino’s maiden campaign in charge, winning each of their Barclays Premier League matches against West Ham and Queens Park Rangers to reach the summit of the table, while also moving into the UEFA Europa League group stages.

Pochettino is not reading too much into the fact that Liverpool put nine goals past Spurs last season.  A 5-0 defeat by Rodgers’ men at White Hart Lane signalled the end of Andre Villas-Boas’ reign and Tottenham were also well beaten with Tim Sherwood in charge at Anfield.

“It is a new season, I think a different style, different philosophy,” said Pochettino. “Liverpool invested a lot of money this summer and we went another way.

“We believe in our squad and add some players for the balance. Two different ways [of approaching things].”

Kyle Walker (pelvis) and Roberto Soldado (neck) are the only injury worries for Tottenham, who have the option of including new defensive recruit Federico Fazio.

Match Preview: Everton vs Chelsea

everton chelsea

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has not ruled Diego Costa out of the Barclays Premier League visit to Everton on Saturday despite fears over the striker’s fitness.

The Spain international has scored in the league wins over Burnley and Leicester City but Chelsea have confirmed that Costa had a “minor muscular problem” and that he would be monitored ahead of the trip to Goodison Park.

Chelsea manager Mourinho confirmed that Costa has not trained in the past two days, but is set for a light session on Friday and his participation at Everton will depend on how he comes through that work out.

“At this time I can’t say much, we’re trying everything for him to play tomorrow,” Mourinho said. “He didn’t train the last two days but today [Friday] is the last day, so today we must make a decision to select him or not.

“He has to try a light training session to see if the reaction is positive. If the reaction is positive we take him to Everton, to play or to sit on the bench, let’s see. If the reaction is not positive obviously we don’t select him, at this moment I don’t know much.

“It’s a better scenario [than first feared] but what matters now is the match tomorrow not the match in three weeks or four weeks, tomorrow he is a doubt.”

Costa could prove a big miss as Chelsea try to improve on a disappointing record against Everton on the road. The hosts have won four of the last five league meetings between the sides at Goodison Park, including a 1-0 triumph courtesy of a Steven Naismith goal last season.

In contrast to their visitors, Everton received a boost to their attacking ranks this week. Having already secured the services of Romelu Lukaku on a permanent basis during the close-season, Roberto Martinez snapped up another Chelsea old boy in the form of Samuel Eto’o on Tuesday.  And the Everton manager has hinted that the Cameroonian, who retired from international duty on Wednesday, could be thrown straight into his starting XI.

“It is difficult,” he told the Everton website. “I tried to have that conversation and, realistically, I would have liked him to have 10 or 11 sessions before we put him in a competitive environment. But I quite quickly learned that I was wasting my time; he wants to be helpful to the team straight away and he wants to be involved.

“He is working [on Thursday] and everything will go down to what condition he has over the next two or three days to make that decision. He arrives at a good time with the international break and that will speed up his adaptation period.”

Lukaku limped out of Everton’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal last weekend but is in contention to face his former club, while Christian Atsu – on loan from Chelsea – is ineligible.

Bryan Oviedo (broken leg), Arouna Kone (knee) and Ross Barkley (knee) remain sidelined, with Steven Pienaar (groin) also absent.

Everton (from): Howard, Robles, Stanek, Alcaraz, Baines, Browning, Coleman, Distin, Duffy, Galloway, Garbutt, Hibbert, Jagielka, Stones, Pennington, Barry, Besic, Grant, Gibson, McCarthy, McGeady, Osman, Byrne, Eto’o, Hope, Long, Lukaku, McAleny, Mirallas, Naismith.

Chelsea (from): Cech, Courtois, Schwarzer, Ake, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Christensen, Ivanovic, Luis, Terry, Zouma, Fabregas, Hazard, Matic, Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Salah, Van Ginkel, Willian, Costa, Drogba, Schurrle, Torres.

Del Piero confirms India move

del piero

Former Sydney FC marquee man Alessandro Del Piero will continue his playing career in India, signing a four-month deal with the Delhi Dynamos.

Del Piero left the Sky Blues at the end of the last Hyundai A-League season and despite turning 40 in November declared his desire to play on when in town for the recent Foxtel A-League All Stars clash against Juventus.

And the Juventus legend has found his next challenge, joining the new eight-team Indian Super League competition as a player and also the brand ambassador.

The competition, which runs for 10-weeks and is modelled on cricket’s IPL, has attracted big names like former French internationals David Trezeguet and Robert Pires, ex-England goalkeeper David James and Sweden’s Freddie Ljunberg.

Del Piero took to his official Facebook page to explain his decision and hopes to bring a positive message to India through the sport of football.

“I’m a football player, I will go to India to play football, to honor my sport and doing what’s right now are happy to do: bring a positive message combined with values of sport and to the spread of football in countries far from the traditional routes. Like India with its “Indian Super League”,” Del Piero wrote.

Greek Australian cricketers wanted

cricket%20greece

Greece has a long history with cricket, dating back to the British control of Corfu.

Three positions are open to Greek Australian under 17s to represent Greece in the International School Cricket Premier League in India

The Hellenic Cricket Federation is calling for three Greek Australian cricket stars to join them in the Third International School Cricket Premier League in India.

The federation is looking for under 17s to supplement their national team, with the kit and accommodation provided. All the federation asks is for the players to pay for the airfare.

The League championship will be played from December 19 to December 23 and will be a chance for aspiring cricket stars to play professionally.

Cricket Australia’s Nick Hatzoglou will be taking over the Australian selection and hopes that the three Greek Australian boys will be able to complement the Greek team well.

As a country deeply embedded with cricket, the Australian boys will provide a strong competitive edge to the Greek team.

“In order for them to get to the next level, or to keep working up the ranking they [Greece] need more assistance and they know that there are players in places like England, Australia, South Africa, that have Greek heritage, and they’re very keen on tapping into that, but obviously not taking over, just so they can be more competitive, especially when they go and play in countries like India,” Mr Hatzoglou tells Neos Kosmos.

Being able to compete internationally for Australia might be a dream for many aspiring cricket stars, but with limited spots and fierce competition at home, tapping into their dual heritage might be one of the quickest ways for these players to get a taste of international play.

In the history of the code in Australia, there may have only been 400 players to be given the opportunity to play in the elite national team.

“In the past they [the Federation] have gone for more high profile, senior players but it’s very difficult with the qualifications. With the under age groups, they can get these young kids as part of the pathway, and then get them qualified and hopefully they get a taste of it and in the future, if they’re good enough and willing, during the cricket off season here in Australia they can go to Greece and play in these tournaments,” Mr Hatzoglou says.

Being a part of the Greek team is a great way for young players to raise their profile but also keep competing during the off season.

Despite what many people might think, Greece is quite advanced in cricket. It might not have such a high profile, like football, but every day it gets converts.

Brought to Corfu by the British in the early 1800s, cricket has enjoyed a healthy fanbase in the island for more than a century. Initially started when the Greeks became curious watching the Brits play in local parks, soon the sport became less of an oddity and more of a local sport. By 1835, Corfu locals had set up two teams to play against the British, and when the British left the island in 1864 the island continued to play the sport. Corfu currently hosts eleven of the fourteen clubs in the country.

It has since spread, with major teams in Athens and Thessaloniki.

“Now they’ve got a long history of three, four, five generations of playing cricket,” Mr Hatzoglou says.

The sport has even seen quite a bit of a resurgence with many of the new immigrants from Pakistan, India and the Middle East entering the code.

The federation plays in division two in Europe alongside countries such as Spain, Belgium and Finland.

Being a part of the national team will be a great way for Greek Australians to tap into their heritage, even if it now becoming quite a distant relation, Mr Hatzoglou says.

“The wonderful thing from the parents of these kids is that these are third generation kids who can tap into their Greek heritage and traditions and culture,” he says.

“By going to Greece or being connected in that way it helps promote the understanding of a big part of their heritage.”

Trials to enter the Greek team will be organised shortly. Those interested are asked to contact Nick Hatzoglou via email Nick.Hatzoglou@cricket.com.au as soon as possible.
