Θερμός χαιρετισμός του Bill Shorten στην πρώτη εκδήλωση της ομάδας των Κοινοβουλευτικών Φίλων του Παρθενώνα στην Καμπέρα.

Με μεγάλη επιτυχία πραγματοποιήθηκε η πρώτη εκδήλωση της ομάδας των Κοινοβουλευτικών Φίλων του Παρθενώνα στην Καμπέρα. Περισσότεροι από εξήντα βουλευτές παρευρέθηκαν το βράδυ της Τετάρτης στο χώρο του Κοινοβουλίου, στην πρώτη συνάντηση του ομίλου που προωθεί τον σκοπό της επιστροφής των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα στην Ελλάδα.

Στη συνάντηση συμμετείχαν, μεταξύ άλλων, πολλές πολιτικές προσωπικότητες και εκπρόσωποι των ελληνικών κοινοτήτων της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας και της Περιφέρειας της Αυστραλιανής Πρωτεύουσας. Ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα έδωσε στην εκδήλωση η παρουσία του αρχηγού της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten. Ο αρχηγός του Εργατικού Κόμματος ένωσε τη φωνή του με εκείνη των φιλελλήνων βουλευτών, τονίζοντας στην ομιλία του ότι, ύστερα από 200 χρόνια, “ήρθε η ώρα να γυρίσουν τα Μάρμαρα στο σπίτι τους”, δήλωση που έγινε δεχτή από θύελλα χειροκροτημάτων από τους παρευρισκόμενους, μεταξύ των οποίων ήταν ο Phillip Ruddock, ο Tony Bourke, ο Mark Dreyfus και πρώην πρόεδρος της Βουλής, Anna Burke.

“Από τον Λόρδο Έλγιν, μέχρι τον Neil Kinnock και τον Tony Blair, οι Βρετανοί έχουν σταθεί αποφασισμένοι, αλλά δεν είναι συνετό να υποτιμήσει κανείς τους Φιλέλληνες ανά τον κόσμο και την συλλογική τους έκκληση για τον επαναπατρισμό των γλυπτών”, συνέχισε ο κ. Shorten, χαιρετίζοντας την δημιουργία της ομάδας των Κοινοβουλευτικών Φίλων του Παρθενώνα, μιας πρωτοβουλίας που ξεκίνησαν η Μαρία Βαμβακινού από το Εργατικό Κόμμα, ο Russell Broadbent από το Φιλελεύθερο Κόμμα, ο Adam Bandt από τους Πράσινους και ο ανεξάρτητος γερουσιαστής Νικ Ξενοφών. Ο όμιλος σκοπεύει να αντλήσει μέλη από όλα τα κόμματα και από τα δύο νομοθετικά σώματα, με σκοπό την αναγνώριση της σημαντικής πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του Παρθενώνα και την προώθηση των ενεργειών για την επιστροφή των μαρμάρων που βρίσκονται στο Βρετανικό Μουσείο του Λονδίνου.

ΖΩΝΤΑΝΟΣ Ο ΦΙΛΕΛΛΗΝΙΣΜΟΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΥΣΤΡΑΛΙΑ

Ιθύνων νους πίσω από την πρωτοβουλία είναι η συμπάροικος Elly Symons, αντιπρόεδρος της κίνησης “Αυστραλοί για την Επιστροφή των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα” (Australians for Return of the Parthenon Sculptures). “Οι Αυστραλοί αναγνωρίζουν την σημασία του έντιμου επαναπατρισμού της πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς στους δίκαιους ιδιοκτήτες της και είναι σπουδαίο που οι πολιτικοί μας αναγνωρίζουν επισήμως αυτό το δικαίωμα”, δήλωσε στον “Νέο Κόσμο” η κ. Symons, τονίζοντας: “Η βεβήλωση του Παρθενώνα (από τον πρέσβη της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία, Λόρδο Έλγιν) πριν από 200 χρόνια δεν διαφέρει από τον βομβαρδισμό των αγαλμάτων του Βουδα στο Μπαμιγιάν από τους Ταλιμπάν ή την καταστροφή της Παλμύρας από το Ισλαμικό Κράτος – αποτελούν όλα καταστροφή πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς”. Όσο για την δημιουργία της ομάδας Κοινοβουλευτικών Φίλων του Παρθενώνα, η κ. Symons θεωρεί ότι απηγεί το ισχυρό αίσθημα δικαιοσύνης των Αυστραλών και την περήφανη φιλελληνική παράδοση της χώρας, ως εκ τούτου θα ενισχύσει τις διμερείς σχέσεις Ελλάδας και Αυστραλίας σε μία πολύ κρίσιμη στιγμή.

“Η Αυστραλία έχει κοινή ιστορία τόσο με την Βρετανία όσο και με την Ελλάδα, οπότε είμαστε σε προνομιακή θέση να ενωθούμε με την διεθνή έκκληση για τον επαναπατρισμό των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα” τόνισε ο βουλευτής του Εργατικού Κόμματος, Kelvin Thompson. Αιτιολογώντας την απόφασή του να γίνει μέλος της ομάδας, ο κ. Thomson εξήρε την σημασία του Παρθενώνα ως παγκόσμιου συμβόλου του κλασικού πολιτισμού που σηματοδοτεί την αρχιτεκτονική και ευρύτερη καλλιτεχνική προσφορά της Αρχαίας Ελλάδας, τονίζοντας ότι είναι αυτή η σημαντική πολιτιστική κληρονομιά που καθιστά σημαντική την εκστρατεία επανένωσης των μαρμάρων. Υπερθεματίζοντας, ο πρέσβης της Ελλάδας στην Αυστραλία, Χάρης Δαφαράνος εξέφρασε την συγκίνησή του που μια τέτοια πρωτοβουλία γεννήθηκε στον ναό της Αυστραλιανής δημοκρατίας, τονίζοντας ότι “είναι πολύ ενθαρρυντικό για τον λαό της Ελλάδας το να κρατηθεί αναμμένος ο πυρσός του φιλελληνισμού στην Αυστραλία”.

Μαγκρόβια δάση στο έλεος της κλιματικής αλλαγής

Τεράστιες εκτάσεις ενδέχεται να εξαφανιστούν πριν το τέλος του αιώνα.

Τμήματα της αυστραλιανής επικράτειας όπου φύονται μαγκρόβια δέντρα θα βρεθούν κάτι από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας εξαιτίας της ανόδου της στάθμης των ωκεανών πριν από το τέλος αυτού του αιώνα.

Σύμφωνα με νέα έρευνα, η εξαφάνιση των δέντρων αυτών, που βρίσκονται στις τροπικές ακρογιαλιές της χώρας, θα μειώσει σημαντικά τον αριθμό των ψαριών στα παράκτια ύδατα, σύμφωνα με την επικεφαλής ερευνήτρια, Catherine Lovelock.

H καθηγήτρια Βιολογικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Κουίνσλαντ, αναφέρει ότι κάτι τέτοιο θα σημάνει ότι θα υπάρξει αύξηση των ποσοτήτων διοξειδίου του άνθρακα που θα παραμείνουν στην ατμόσφαιρα.

Στην Αυστραλία υπάρχουν περίπου ένα εκατομμύριο εκτάρια με παράκτια μαγκρόβια βλάστηση. Η χώρα έχει τη δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη έκταση με τέτοια βλάστηση στον κόσμο μετά την Ινδονησία. Μια πρόχειρη εκτίμηση της αξίας που έχει αυτή η βλάστηση στην αυστραλιανή οικονομία αγγίζει τα $200 δισ. ετησίως!

Οι υπολογισμοί της καθηγήτριας Lovelock και της ομάδας της που αφορούν την περιοχή του Ινδικού και Ειρηνικού Ωκεανού, έδειξε, ότι ακόμη και αν ληφθούν μέτρα για τον έλεγχο των αερίων του θερμοκηπίου, περιοχές κατά μήκος του Κόλπου της Ταϊλάνδης, της Παπούα Νέας Γουινέας και των Νησιών Σολομώντος, θα μπορούσαν να χάσουν την παράκτια βλάστησή τους στα επόμενα 50 χρόνια.

Η κ. Lovelock αναφέρει επίσης ότι η εξαφάνιση της παράκτιας βλάστησης θα επηρεάσει σε σημαντικό βαθμό και την αλιεία, και κατά συνέπεια μπορεί να αποβεί μοιραία για τις κοινότητες των ψαράδων. “Η μαγκρόβια βλάστηση είναι φυτώρια για ορισμένα είδη ψαριών. Σε κάποιο σημείο του κύκλου ζωής τους, πολλά είδη ψαριών θα χρησιμοποιήσουν την παράκτια βλάστηση για να τραφούν”.

Η έρευνα δημοσιεύθηκε στο περιοδικό “Nature”.

Την καθαίρεση του ιερέα που προκάλεσε σκάνδαλο στην Ελληνορθόδοξη Εκκλησία των ΗΠΑ με τα φετιχιστικά όργια στα οποία επιδιδόταν με την παντρεμένη ερωμένη του ζητεί από το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο η Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής.

Κατά την Ιερά Επαρχιακή Σύνοδο της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Νέα Υόρκη υπό τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αμερικής Δημήτριο στις 13 και τις 14 Οκτωβρίου, αποφασίστηκε μεταξύ άλλων το «ξύρισμα» του ιερέα Γεωργίου Πασσιά, ο οποίος έχει ήδη παραιτηθεί από την ενορία του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα στη Νέα Υόρκη όπου ιερουργούσε από το 2006.

«Η Ιερά Σύνοδος συνεζήτησε επίσης καί θέματα πειθαρχικής φύσεως κληρικών, καί συγκεκριμένως μεταξύ άλλων καί τήν περίπτωσιν του π. Γεωργίου Πασσιά, διά τόν οποίον καί απεφάσισεν ομοφώνως νά εισηγηθεί τήν καθαίρεσιν αυτοού εις τήν αρμοδίαν αρχήν του Οικουμενικοού Πατριαρχείου» αναφέρει χαρακτηριστικά το ανακοινωθέν που εξέδωσε η Σύνοδος.

Ο 67χρονος ιερέας, που είναι πατέρας τεσσάρων παιδιών, έχει εξαφανιστεί μετά το ξέσπασμα του σκανδάλου, παρακαλώντας μάλιστα με ανακοίνωσή του που φρόντισε να διανεμηθεί στο ποίμνιό του να μην τον αναζητήσει κανείς γιατί θα φροντίσει να αφοσιωθεί «στη μετάνοια». Αντιθέτως, η ερωμένη του Έθελ Μπουζάλας, την οποία εμφάνιζε ως βαφτισιμιά του, με e-mails που στέλνει στους ανωτέρους του ιερέα ξεδιπλώνει με όλες τις λεπτομέρειες την σκανδαλώδη πολυετή σχέση τους, κατά την οποία όπως υποστηρίζει είχε μείνει και έγκυος.

Η παράνομη σχέση απασχόλησε έντονα τον ομογενειακό Τύπο, αλλά και την εφημερίδα «New York Post» στις αρχές του μήνα, όταν διέρρευσε το οπτικοακουστικό υλικό που έστειλε στην Αρχιεπισκοπή ο ομογενής εν διαστάσει σύζυγος της 45χρονης Περουβιανής καλλονής, στο οποίο ο ιερέας φαινόταν, μεταξύ άλλων, να παρακολουθεί σε σεξουαλική έξαψη την ερωμένη του να διαλύει κεκάκια με τα οπίσθιά της.

Hobart Hellenes offer advice to Middle Eastern newcomers.

With Australia about to take the highest number of refugees since the early days of mass migration from southern Europe, two elderly Greek Australians in Tasmania this week reflected on their own experiences and offered advice to the latest wave of migrants.

Responding to the crisis in Syria which has left over seven million people homeless, in his last days as prime minister Tony Abbott announced an additional 12,000 refugees fleeing the Middle East will be able to call Australia home.

The policy shift will see the total number of migrants under Australia’s refugee and humanitarian programs rise to 25,750 in a single year. Tasmania has committed to doubling its usual annual intake of refugees this year to about 1,000. Victoria will take four times that number and NSW is scheduled to receive about 7,000.

As the nation reflects on the imminent arrival of the refugees, the ABC sought the advice of a previous generation who migrated Down Under in the years immediately after World War II.

With just a few shillings in his pocket when he arrived in Melbourne in March 1950, Nick Anagnostis left his family in Lesvos in search of a new life in the southern hemisphere.

“I was 15 years of age, I came on my own, without knowing anyone, and without knowing the language,” he told the ABC.

“I wasn’t feeling well at all, I was in tears sometimes, because I was really, really on my own.”

His first job was in a family friend’s milk bar in Sydney. At 17 he bought his first business, a restaurant in Port Stephens. Soon after he sold up and moved to Tasmania where he bought a second restaurant which he owned until the mid-sixties.

In Hobart, where he later ran a successful corner store, he met his wife Helen, and three children and 10 grandchildren followed.

Nick says he feels for those displaced by the Syrian conflict, thousands of whom have sought refuge in his ancestral island on their journey to western Europe.

“The island I come from is very close to Turkey, and every day there are hundreds and hundreds arriving there,” he said.

“We should help those people. They should leave their problems behind and start a new life. Forget where they came from because this is paradise, in every way. If there is paradise then this is where we’re living,” says Nick, who adds that Australia’s island state has only one down side. “The only thing in Tasmania is, we’ve got beautiful beaches and the water’s a bit too cold.”

Fellow Tasmanian John Anagnostoru came to Australia in 1951 when he was 26 with a young wife and child.

John left Greece because of the inability to find work in the country shattered by civil war. After working for NSW Railways at Sydney’s Central Station for a number of years, he moved his family to Tasmania to escape the racism and discrimination they experienced in the NSW capital.

“We were known as ‘new Australians’,” he says. “Very unfriendly, people were. I mean, you’d go in a street for instance and ask someone for directions and they wouldn’t stop to talk to you.”

John says Tasmanians were much friendlier and the family decided to stay. He went on to work for the Post Master General, now Telstra, for 35 years.

He and his wife were blessed with two children and now have three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John’s advice to newly-arrived refugees is to take any job that’s on offer.

“Try to assimilate with the Australian people, and abide by the laws of the country,” he said.

“People should not be in their own corner, they should mix with the local people.”

Federal MPs unite on Marbles reunification

Australian Opposition Leader Bill Shorten joined more than 60 MPs, dignitaries, and leaders of the NSW and ACT Hellenic communities on Wednesday at the launch of the Parliamentary Friends of the Parthenon group.

The group, established to encourage the Australian Government to back international efforts for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, was convened by Victorian MP Maria Vamvakinou, with the Greens’ Adam Bandt and Nick Xenophon as co-convenors.

To rapturous applause, Mr Shorten began his speech by saying that after 200 years it was “time for the marbles to go home” and that Australia, with its “long and healthy links to both Greece and Britain” was ideally placed to lend its voice to the campaign.

“From Lord Elgin, Neil Kinnock and Tony Blair, it’s fair to say the Brits have been resolute, but it would not be wise to underestimate the Philhellenes around the world, and their collective call for the sculptures to be repatriated,” he said.

The Labour leader added that he hoped the Parliamentary Friends group would strengthen the ongoing campaign to bring together the sculptures and see them returned to their place of origin and installed in the Acropolis Museum.

With leaders of the Australian Hellenic Council and a host of parliamentary heavyweights in the audience, including Phillip Ruddock, Tony Burke, and Mark Dreyfus, along with former speaker Anna Burke, Greece’s ambassador to Australia, Mr Haris Dafaranos, said he felt “humbled to be in the cradle of Australian democracy to salute efforts to re-engage Australia” on the issue.

“It is very important to keep up the interest of the Australian public on the sculptures issue, if we are able to keep alight this torch of philhellenism in Australia this is a great encouragement for the people of Greece.”

Former ABC managing director Mr David Hill, Chairman of the International Association for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures, said the formation of the Parliamentary Friends group was a vital landmark for the global campaign.

“There aren’t many wrongs in the world that you can put right, but this is one of them, and with your support we’ll one day see justice done,” he said.

Elly Symons, vice president of Australians for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures, whose efforts were instrumental to the formation of the group, told Neos Kosmos the initiative was key to enhancing Australia’s role as an advocate for the Marbles’ reunification.

“Australians recognise the importance of honourable repatriation of cultural heritage to its rightful owners and its great to have this formally acknowledged by our politicians,” she said.

“The defacing of the Parthenon 200 years ago is no different to the bombing of the Bamiyan Buddhas by the Taliban and the destruction of Palmyra by ISIS – all go by the name of ‘cultural heritage destruction’.

Ms Symons said that Australia’s “strong sense of justice and proud philhellenic tradition” and the new bi-partisan Parliamentary Friends group made the country a potent international voice on the Marbles’ repatriation.

Messi scored twice when the sides last met in Belarus four years ago as Barca cruised to a 5-0 win.

However, the impact of injuries to the Argentine, Iniesta and Rafinha, allied to a one-year ban on registering new players has left Barca with a very stretched squad for a run of six games in 19 days.

A come from behind win against Bayer Leverkusen in their last European outing did at least put Barca back on course for the last 16 after opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Roma.

Enrique’s men will be expected to pick up six points from their two clashes with BATE in the next fortnight with the safety net of knowing Messi will be fit for their final two group games at home to Roma and away to Leverkusen.

“We need to recover well, we have a lot of games in a row and that means we are doing well because you are in all competitions,” added Rakitic.

“We will prepare well for Tuesday (tomorrow) and if something hurts a little you just have to grit your teeth and keep going. That is all we can do.”

BATE go into the game against the Spanish giants full of confidence after sealing a 10th consecutive league title on Friday with 2-0 win over Vitebsk.

The Belarusians are also well in the fight to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in their fifth year in the competition.

A 3-2 win over Roma last time out means Alyaksandr Yermakovich’s side are level with Leverkusen in second place in Group E, just a point behind Barca.

BATE also have Champions League winning experience in their ranks in the form of Alexander Hleb, who was part of the Barca squad that won the competition in 2008/09.
