Είναι μια περίεργη χρονιά για τους καρχαρίες. Τουλάχιστον, έτσι ισχυρίζονται οι επιστήμονες και οι ωκεανολόγοι.

Είναι όμως και μια εξίσου παράξενη χρονιά για τους εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες λουόμενους, σέρφερ και αυτοδύτες στην Αυστραλία, που πλέον μπαίνουν στο νερό άκρως υποψιασμένοι, αλλά και θορυβημένοι από την πρόσφατη έξαρση των κρουσμάτων επιθέσεων από καρχαρίες.

Μέχρι στιγμής, για το 2015 έχουν καταγραφεί στην Αυστραλία 29 επιθέσεις καρχαριών, με δυο νεκρούς και 18 τραυματίες.

Μόνο στην Νέα Νότια Ουαλία (την πολυπληθέστερη αυστραλιανή πολιτεία), έχουν ήδη καταγράφει 13 επιθέσεις, με επτά τραυματισμούς κι έναν νεκρό σέρφερ.

Μάλιστα, εξαιτίας του διπλασιασμού των επιθέσεων τα τελευταία χρόνια, οι αρχές της Αυστραλίας έδωσαν πριν από καιρό εντολή σε ψαράδες να περιφρουρούν τις τουριστικές παραλίες θανατώνοντας κάθε καρχαρία άνω των τριών μέτρων.

Είναι ένα νούμερο πολύ μεγαλύτερο του συνηθισμένου, με τους επιστήμονες πλέον να αναζητούν τις αιτίες πίσω απ’ την αλλαγή -προς το επιθετικότερο- της συμπεριφοράς των καρχαριών.

Όπως τονίζει σε σχετικό του άρθρο το BBC, μια πολύ πιθανή αιτία μπορεί να εδράζεται στα θαλάσσια ρεύματα. Δηλαδή, οι καρχαρίες αποπροσανατολίζονται από ζεστά ρεύματα, ακολουθώντας τα μέχρι που συχνά παρασύρονται κοντά σε ακτές.

Όπως εξηγεί ο Ντέιβιντ Πόουτερ, ωκεανολόγος από το πανεπιστήμιο του Νιουκάσλ στην Νέα Νότια Ουαλία, «σίγουρα, τα θερμά θαλάσσια ρεύματα παίζουν το δικό του ρόλο [σε αυτήν την αλλαγή συμπεριφοράς], καθώς παρασύρουν σμάρια από μικρά ψάρια, τα οποία στη συνεχεία ακολουθούνται από τους μεγάλους θαλάσσιους θηρευτές. Όμως στην πραγματικότητα έχουμε να κάνουμε με έναν συνδυασμό παραγόντων».

Άλλες συχνές αιτίες της αύξησης των επιθέσεων κατά τους ωκεανολόγους είναι η αύξηση της θερμοκρασίας εξαιτίας της κλιματικής αλλαγής αλλά και η συχνότητα του ψαρέματος σε τουριστικές παραλίες, με τους καρχαρίες να οσφραίνονται τα δολώματα από χιλιόμετρα.

«Πράγματι, ο αριθμός νούμερο των επιθέσεων από καρχαρίες για φέτος ήταν αξιοσημείωτα υψηλό, ειδικά αν λάβουμε υπόψη μας πως ο πληθυσμός τους έχει πέσει σε ιστορικά χαμηλά επίπεδα», τονίζει με τη σειρά του ο θαλάσσιος βιολόγος Μάρτι Γκάργουντ.

«Ωστόσο, πολλοί λάτρεις των θαλάσσιων σπορ συχνά παρασύρονται στα ανοικτά, εκεί όπου είναι πολύ πιο εύκολο να δεχτούν επίθεση από έναν καρχαρία», καταλήγει ο Γκάργουντ.

Στην Καμπέρα η επίσημη πρώτη της διακομματικής ομάδας βουλευτών φίλων του Παρθενώνα

Σε μία σπάνια επίδειξη υπέρβασης των κομματικών ταυτοτήτων, μία ομάδα ομοσπονδιακών βουλευτών παραμέρισαν τις πολιτικές τους πεποιθήσεις και ένωσαν τις δυνάμεις τους στο όνομα του φιλελληνισμού.

Η Μαρία Βαμβακινού από το Εργατικό Κόμμα, ο Russell Broadbent από το Φιλελεύθερο Κόμμα, ο Adam Bandt από τους Πράσινους και ο ανεξάρτητος γερουσιαστής Νικ Ξενοφών, αποτελούν την ηγετική ομάδα των Κοινοβουλευτικών Φίλων του Παρθενώνα, μίας ομάδας που θα αντλήσει μέλη από όλα τα κόμματα και από τα δύο νομοθετικά σώματα, με σκοπό την αναγνώριση της σημαντικής πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του Παρθενώνα και την προώθηση των ενεργειών για την επιστροφή των μαρμάρων που βρίσκονται στο Βρετανικό Μουσείο του Λονδίνου.

Η κίνηση αυτή, η οποία παρουσιάστηκε χθες σε μία ειδική εκδήλωση στο Κοινοβούλιο, αποτελεί μία πρωτοβουλία της συμπαροίκου, Elly Symons, η οποία βρίσκεται στη θέση της αντιπροέδρου της κίνησης “Αυστραλοί για την Επιστροφή των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα” (Australians for Return of the Parthenon Sculptures).

“Οι Κοινοβουλευτικοί Φίλοι του Παρθενώνα θα ενισχύσουν τις διμερείς σχέσεις Ελλάδας και Αυστραλίας σε μία πολύ κρίσιμη στιγμή και επιπλέον θα βοηθήσουν στην ευαισθητοποίηση για την ιστορική και πολιτισμική σημασία του Παρθενώνα ως εξαιρετικού μνημείου που ανήκει στα θεμέλια του δυτικού πολιτισμού και είναι μοναδικό για την παγκόσμια πολιτιστική κληρονομιά” τόνισε η κ. Symons,

η οποία εξάλλου τον περασμένο Ιούλιο είχε την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσει τις εργασίες της Παγκόσμιας Διακοινοβουλευτικής Ένωσης Ελληνισμού στην Αθήνα.

Εκεί, η κ. Symons είχε την ευκαιρία να απευθυνθεί στους απεσταλμένους, ελληνικής καταγωγής βουλευτές από όλον τον κόσμο και να τους ενημερώσεις για την ιστορία της κλοπής των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα από τον Λόρδο Έλγιν και την εκστρατεία για την επιστροφή τους στην Αθήνα προκειμένου να στεγαστούν στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης. Παράλληλα, τους ενημέρωσε για τις βουλευτικές εκδηλώσεις διαμαρτυρίας απέναντι στην επίμονη άρνηση της Βρετανικής Κυβέρνησης, διαχρονικά, να επιτρέψει την επιστροφή των Γλυπτών στην Ελλάδα.

Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι μόλις τον περασμένο Μάρτιο, η Βρετανική Κυβέρνηση αρνήθηκε να συμμετάσχει σε σχετική συνάντηση με την Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση, με την διαμεσολάβηση της UNESCO, παρά το ότι το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο είναι μία από τις χώρες που υπέγραψαν το 1970 την Σύμβαση της UNESCO για την Πολιτιστική Κληρονομιά.

Ωστόσο, τα επιχειρήματα της βρετανικής πλευράς παρουσιάζονται όλο και πιο αδύναμα, απέναντι στην όλο και αυξανόμενη δύναμη του κινήματος για την επιστροφή των μαρμάρων, η οποία έχει ενισχυθεί σημαντικά από την λειτουργία του νέου μουσείου της Ακρόπολης, το οποίο στεγάζει όλους τους θησαυρούς του μνημείου, με τρανταχτή εξαίρεση τα αποσπάσματα της ζωφόρου, τις Καρυάτιδες και τις μετώπες που απέσπασαν με βίαιο τρόπο το 1801 οι εντολοδόχοι του Λόρδου Έλγιν, τότε Πρέσβη της Βρετανία στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία.

“Είναι μία μεγάλη πολιτισμική και ιστορική αδικία που πρέπει να διορθωθεί”, τονίζει σχετικά ο David Hill, Πρόεδρος του Διεθνούς Συνδέσμου για την Επανένωση των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα: “Μετά από 200 χρόνια, έχει έρθει η ώρα για τους Φιλέλληνες ανά τον κόσμο να ξεκινήσουν εκ νέου την εκστρατεία για την επιστροφή. Η Αυστραλία, ως νέα δημοκρατία με δεσμούς τόσο στην Βρετανία όσο και στην Ελλάδα, μέσω της μετανάστευσης και της κοινής εμπειρίας τον καιρό του πολέμου, βρίσκεται σε προνομιακή θέση να ηγηθεί της κίνησης. Προσωπικά, βρίσκω άξια επαίνου την Κοινοβουλευτική Ομάδα Φιλίας, γι’ αυτήν την πρωτοβουλία”.

PM has smashing time in the Sunshine State

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was the highlight of this year’s Gold Coast Greek Festival last weekend.
The PM paid a unexpected visit to the Evandale Parklands, where he surprised the 20,000 people attending.
Accompanied by Moncrieff MP Steve Ciobo, the pair attracted much of the attention throughout the day, taking selfies and indulging in Greek treats.
Property developer Jim Raptis when opening the festival gave Mr Turnbull a special welcome, saying “we are pleased and fortunate that your visit to our city allowed you to join us”.
Mr Raptis went on to recognise the contribution of Greek migrants on the Gold Coast and the growing number who are still choosing to call Australia home.
“The Greek community on the Gold Coast and everywhere in Australia is proud to be part of this wonderful country,” said Mr Raptis.
Mr Turnbull was later called to the stage, where he praised the Greek Australian community, claiming “I love everything about Greek culture”.
The first Australian prime minister to attend the event in its 12 years, organisers of the event honoured his presence with a plaque.
The PM’s attendance coincided with his trip to the sunshine state to announce a $95 million grant for the extension of the Gold Coast light rail line, expected to be ready in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Η εντολή της επιστήμης για να διασωθούν τα χαριτωμένα μας κοάλα

Ακούγεται ως άκρως οξύμωρο αλλά οι επιστήμονες ξέρουν πολύ καλά τι λένε και μπορούν να το τεκμηριώσουν ανάλογα. Ένας ιδιαίτερα μεγάλος αριθμός κοάλα έχει προβληθεί από τα βακτήρια χλαμύδα και έχουν πάθει στείρωση γεγονός που όπως λένε οι επιστήμονες αν αρχίσει η εξολόθρευσή τους, θα σταματήσει και η περαιτέρω μετάδοση των βακτηρίων στον υγιή πληθυσμό τους και έτσι θα αρχίσουν να αναπαράγονται και πάλι.

Σε σχετικό άρθρο ερευνητικής ομάδας της οποίας ηγήθηκε ο καθηγητής David Wilson από το Ινστιτούτο Kirby του University of New South Wales, στο επιστημονικό περιοδικό Journal of Wildlife Diseases, αναφέρεται ότι αν ακολουθηθεί η συγκεκριμένη πρακτική δηλαδή η εξολόθρευση μεγάλου αριθμού κοάλα, το βακτήριο χλαμύδα θα εξαφανιστεί από τον πληθυσμό των χαριτωμένων αυτών μαρσιποφόρων, σε τέσσερα περίπου χρόνια.

Οι επιστήμονες χρησιμοποιώντας διαφορετικά μοντέλα προσομοίωσης στον πληθυσμό των κοάλα που ζει στις ακτές της περιοχής του Moreton Bay στην Πολιτεία του Queensland, διαπίστωσαν ότι η ελεγχόμενη εξολόθρευσή τους σε συνάρτηση με την χορήγηση φαρμάκων σ’ αυτά μπορεί να αποδειχθεί η πιο ενδεδειγμένη λύση για την διάσωσή τους.

Να αναφέρουμε ότι αυτή δεν είναι οι πρώτοι φορά που οι επιστήμονες προτείνουν αυτήν την «ριζοσπαστική» μέθοδο για την διάσωση των κοάλα. Πριν από λίγο καιρό άλλη επιστημονική ομάδα πρότεινε την εξολόθρευση μεγάλου αριθμού κοάλα που ζούσαν στο νησί Kangaroo Island, επειδή λόγω της αύξησης του αριθμού τους, τα δέντρα είχαν σχεδόν εξαφανιστεί από το νησί με συνέπεια όλα τους να λιμοκτονούν.

The family of convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has been awarded nearly $1 million in defamation damages over claims father Mick operated a drug syndicate.

Sins of the Father, a book released by Fairfax journalist Eammon Duff in 2012, claimed Schapelle’s sister, brother and mother were part of a drug syndicate.

The book alleged Mick regularly bought marijuana from a drug syndicate in South Australia and also that Queensland police received a tip off Mick would be smuggling drugs into Bali in the weeks before Schapelle Corby was arrested.

Schapelle’s mother Rosleigh Rose has been awarded $190,000, coming after daughter Mercedes received $175,000 and son Michael received $150,000 in separate cases.

But Rose told Sunrise on Friday morning she wasn’t happy with the settlement and wanted publishers Allen & Unwin and Duff to face criminal charges.

“I didn’t want what the publishers and Eammon Duff have done to be swept under the carpet,” she said.

“There’s over 60 years of experience between them and they can do this and no charges are laid?

“How come this person, a maggot I’ll call him, I don’t like to say his name, could write this book of lies and get it printed with these publishers?” she asked of Duff, who she claims never contacted the family.

Allen & Unwin was forced to pay close to $400,000 in legal costs and remove the book from shelves.

“This book was riddled with incorrect facts about my family – facts that could have been easily checked but were not,” Mercedes said after being awarded $175,000 last year.

“Had my father been alive, this book would never have been published. There is no legal avenue for the family of a dead person who has been defamed to vindicate their loved-one’s reputation.

“My father was a good man who worked hard in the mines most of his adult life before succumbing to cancer. The allegations made about him in this book are false and were devastating to his family.”

Woman dead after semi-trailer hits her car on M1 near Lake Macquarie

A woman has died after her car was hit by a semi-trailer on the M1 at Killingworth, just north of Lake Macquarie, on Friday morning.

Police believe the 29-year-old woman’s Ford Falcon sedan was stationary on the highway, about 8.5 kilometres north of the Ryhope interchange, at the time of the crash.

The crash occurred about 4.30am, closing the highway and causing traffic chaos for morning commuters.

The male truck driver was not injured the crash, police said. He has been taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

The Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit is examining the circumstances of the crash.

One northbound lane of the M1 is closed and motorists are being escorted past the crash site by police, according to an RMS spokesman.

Motorists should expect significant delays and heavy traffic approaching George Booth Drive on the highway.

Όλα ξεκίνησαν όταν ο βουλευτής της Χρυσής Αυγής κατηγόρησε το ΚΚΕ ότι δεν δέχεται έλεγχο στα οικονομικά του και χρησιμοποίησε σκληρούς χαρακτηρισμούς.

Τους φώναξε: «Όταν οι σύντροφοι του ΚΚΕ δεχθούν να γίνει έλεγχος στα κομματικά τους ταμεία τότε συζητάμε. Που είναι τα λεφτά από την πώληση του 902;», είπε ο κ. Λαγός. Αυτό προκάλεσε την αντίδραση των βουλευτών του ΚΚΕ οι οποίοι σηκώθηκαν όρθιοι και άρχισαν να φωνάζουν «Μαχαιροβγάλτες! Φονιάδες!» Τότε εκείνος ανταπάντησε και επικράτησε πανδαιμόνιο.

Όταν δε τους αποκάλεσε “τσιράκια του συστήματος” εκείνοι αποχώρησαν σε ένδειξη διαμαρτυρίας.

Ο προεδρεύων Γιώργος Βαρεμένος μάταια προσπαθούσε να επιβάλλει την τάξη αφού και οι βουλευτές της Χρυσής Αυγής είχαν σηκωθεί όρθιοι και φώναζαν και χειροκροτούσαν. Μάλιστα κατευθύνθηκαν απειλητικά μέχρι τα υπουργικά έδρανα και απειλήθηκε σύρραξη. Εκεί βρίσκονταν ο Πάνος Σκουρλέτης και η Θεανώ Φωτίου και διαμαρτύρονταν έντονα.

Τότε ο κ. Βαρεμένος αναγκάστηκε να διακόψει την συνεδρίαση για λίγα λεπτά και να καλέσει τον φρούραρχο.

Neighbour cooperation would be very ‘useful’ to control refugee arrivals

A day after the Greek Foreign Ministry ruled out conducting joint patrols in the Aegean Sea with Turkey, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday called on Athens to reconsider, noting that the refugee crisis is “a European issue, it’s not an issue of Greek-Turkish relations.”

Speaking at the European Parliament in Brussels ahead of a two-day summit of European Union leaders on migration, Juncker asked Athens to rethink its position as the cooperation of the two countries’ naval forces, “under European auspices,” would be “very useful” in the Aegean.

Describing Turkey is an important but difficult partner, Juncker said joint patrols of the Aegean were crucial as Turkey has become a gateway for hundreds of thousands of refugees. He suggested that Turkish authorities were open to the idea of joint patrols.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert struck a similar tone, stressing the need for a “coordinated situation” between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean and at the EU’s external borders to obstruct the activities of human smugglers.

In a related development, the head of the EU’s task force in Greece, Maarten Verwey, said that the process of identifying and registering migrants and refugees by Greek authorities had improved, noting that officials on the island of Lesvos, a key entry point, were registering up to 3,500 migrants daily.

A teenage terror suspect accused of assisting with the killing of police accountant Curtis Cheng had previously spoken of his “anger” at a perceived war on Islam in Australia.

Raban Alou, 18, spoke to Fairfax Media last year when his family’s Wentworthville home was raided and his older brother, Kawa, was detained as part of a terrorism operation.

“I dunno, I got a lot of anger,” he said at the time. “It’s a war on Islam just because we grow our beards. They want to label us as a terrorist, or supporters of IS [Islamic State], whatever, that’s up to you.”

Mr Alou said he was angry that police had targeted his older brother and several of his friends, who he admitted were being watched by ASIO.

He said his brother, Kawa, had recently served three years in jail for a violent assault and hung around with “hot heads”.

The Alous’ home was raided again last week in connection to the murder of Mr Cheng outside Parramatta police headquarters on October 2.

Mr Alou was detained and charged on Thursday night with the Commonwealth offence of aiding, abetting, counselling and procuring the commission of a terrorist act.

It is alleged he gave schoolboy Farhad Jabar a gun and spent two hours with him in Parramatta Mosque on October 2, before Jabar shot Mr Cheng outside Parramatta police headquarters.

A family friend, 22-year-old Talal Alameddine, was charged on Thursday with supplying the gun to Mr Alou.

Last year, Mr Alou told Fairfax Media that police had come to their Wentworthville home looking for material relating to al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

“They [the police] said it was something to do with terrorist activity. I was like, relax,” he said at the time. “They are searching now but there is nothing to find.”

Hours before the second raid on their home last week, older brother Kawa lashed out at Fairfax Media, saying the killing of Muslims around the world was more important than Mr Cheng’s death.

“Why don’t you do something useful?” he said via Facebook. “And talk about real events occurring in Palestine. The killing of Muslims all ova the world [sic]. The oppressions in Burma, Palestine.”

SINGLETON’S bat problem is not new.

In fact, it has plagued the town for the past 15 years and left residents and the council equally frustrated at the endless bureaucratic hoops in the way of relocating the protected animals.

So when Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen raised the issue in NSW Parliament this week and urged the state and federal governments to remove the red tape – saying the bats should be relocated or eradicated – Singleton folk were pleased but understandably reserved about the outcome.

Mr Johnsen said the latest state government policy offered three ways to control the bats, but if a landholder needed to disperse the colony they also had to meet federal government requirements.

“Let them do it without having both hands tied behind their backs,” Mr Johnsen said.

“Take away the barriers to managing the problem and actually empower communities, don’t just talk about it.”

Singleton residents put up with a permanent bat colony and the thousands of bats that return every year to breed in Burdekin park’s trees.

This year they have also had to cope with an influx of 20,000 bats, which the council suspects have relocated from elsewhere.

Mayor of Singleton, Cr John Martin, said it took more than 20 minutes for the colony to fly away from the park to feed every night, and it was a dramatic parade against the sunset until bat droppings fell on people, or their cars.

“We have been trying to do something for 15 years and have approached the state and federal governments and haven’t got anywhere.

“I support what Michael Johnsen is trying to do and we want an outcome, but we have been down this road many times before and achieved nothing.”

The council has already spent more than $180,000 on lights and noises to “scare away” the bats, and been forced to move Anzac Day and other services usually held in the park.
