ΜΕΓΑΣ ο Αλέξανδρος, άτυχη η Ελλάς Mελβούρνης!

heidelberg

Comedians Basile, Mike Marino and Tahir join forces for a side-splitting performance.

Basile (the Greek god), Mike Marino (the Italian American bad boy of comedy) and Tahir ‘Oh my God’ Bilgic are the undisputed kings of ethnic comedy and they’re coming for Australian audiences this September!

Basile is no stranger to Australian shores, having toured Australia to sell-out crowds in 2012 and 2014, and described by the Cleveland Post as “a lovable nut, not nasty!”. He has a special comic presence and a real talent for creating a character. His DVD, Growing up Greek in America, has sold in excess of a million copies and continues to amuse and entertain new audiences around the globe.

Mike Marino (the bad boy of Italian American comedy) is a native of New Jersey and has performed in all major clubs on the Las Vegas strip, and in 2008 was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. If you like The Sopranos you’ll love the charm and razor sharp wit of Mike Marino.

Tahir ‘Oh my God’ Bilgic, a.k.a. Habib from Fat Pizza, has carved a career to make himself one of the busiest comedians on the Australian circuit. Known for his starring roles in Fat Pizza, Housos vs. Authority and Fat Pizza vs. Housos, Tahir is the MC comedian and the glue that binds this hilarious international line up together, in a show that will have your sides splitting with laughter.

The Kings of Ethnic Comedy opens on Thursday 10 September at the Vikings Club in Canberra, before moving around Australia, where the trio will be performing until 27 September 2015.

The 2015 AFL Multicultural Round celebrates the contribution of diverse communities to the game’s history

To fight the marginalisation of players coming from diverse backgrounds, the AFL dedicates Round 19 to the seven most dominant migrant communities in the country.

“Over 14 per cent of AFL players are multicultural, meaning they are born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas,” AFL associate Dr Nikos Nikolopoulos, who will be commentating Round 19 in Greek, says.

“Among the favourite multicultural stars in the AFL are Essendon’s David Zaharakis, Melbourne’s Jimmy Toumpas and Collingwood’s Patrick Karnezis.”

Nikolopoulos believes this initiative will help many first and second generation Greeks who are interested in the sport to enjoy the games in their native language.

“Through sport we have a chance to promote messages like participation, equality, help and fun, through inclusion”, Nikolopoulos adds.

“Via our national sport, we can build bridges with the Australian community at large, which the Greek community is a major part of.”

If you are eager to find out how the word ‘Sherrin’ translates in Greek, the Adelaide v Richmond game at the Adelaide Oval on Friday 7 August is the perfect opportunity.

Renowned community developer, psychologist George Halkias will also commentate on the game in Greek as AFL’s multicultural ambassador.

The 50m lines on the playing field will also be marked in Greek to reflect our community’s contribution to the sport, while the word ‘umpire’ will be translated into seven languages and printed on the back of shirts to be worn during the AFL’s multicultural round in round 19.

The first ever AFL Multicultural Festival celebrating ‘Many Cultures, One Game’ will be held at the MCG in Yarra Park at the Collingwood v Carlton game on 8 August from 11.30 am-5.30 pm.

Meanwhile, from 14 August-31 October 2015 the Immigration Museum will host a photographic exhibition showcasing multiculturalism in Australian Football.

* All matches will be broadcast in the corresponding language on AFL.com.au and the official AFL Live app.

Greek islands go under the hammer

salekatoantikeri

Pirates of the Aegean: overseas investors follow in Johnny Depp’s footsteps.

The Greek government is selling off some of its 6,000 islands to foreign buyers in an effort to pay off the country’s staggering debt.

Earlier this month, Hollywood star Johnny Depp reportedly bought the isle of Stroggyli, near Kastellorizo, for an estimated €4.2m.

The deal was mediated by the UK property agency that supposedly handled Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s purchase of the island Gaia in the Ionian.

Greek newspaper Proto Thema recently revealed that American tycoon Warren Buffett had bought the 300 acre island of Agios Thomas for €15m in partnership with Italian real estate magnate Alessandro Proto.

The two released a statement denying the acquisition, but expressed their intention to invest in the wider region.

With only 227 of Greece’s islands inhabited. Makis Perdikaris, director of Greek Island Properties, told reporters he was unhappy at the prospect of the outright sale of state land.

“I am sad. Selling off your islands or areas that belong to the people of Greece should be used as the last resort,” he said.

But Mr Perdikaris said he was not necessarily against long-term leases.

“The first thing is to develop the economy and attract foreign domestic investment to create the necessary infrastructure. The point is to get money.”

Aside from Stroggyli, Agios Thomas and Gaia, another 16 islands were officially listed for sale this month. Also available are Tragonisi and St John’s in the Gulf of Saronikos, Kythnos Island Parcel in the Cyclades, Omfori, Nissos Sofia and Nissos Makri in the Ionian Sea, Patroklos in Lavreotiki, Vouvalos in Amvrakikos Gulf and Kardiotissa.

Greek U18 basketball team wins Euro championship

charalambopoulos_web-thumb-large

The national Under-18 basketball team is the new European champion, after coming from behind to beat Turkey in Sunday’s final at Volos, central Greece, where the tournament took place.

With Vassilis Charalambopoulos, Giorgos Papagiannis and Dionysis Skoulidas as its biggest stars, the team of coach Ilias Papatheodorou made the most of home advantage and after downing France in the quarterfinals and Lithuania in the semis it defeated Turkey 64-61.

Turkey led for most of the game, by up to 14 points, but four minutes from the end Greece edged ahead 54-51 for the first time in the final.

The Greeks’ inexperience and enthusiasm saw them shoot one three-point shot after another, with only moderate success, although the Turks were also nervous in attack and could not translate possession into points.

This is another golden generation for Greek basketball, as the men’s team is eyeing a place on the podium in next month’s Eurobasket.

This was sent by the Greek Government, together with the appropriate certificate of authenticity, as a gift when the Community Centre was built in 2002.
