On Sunday the 9th of August 2015 at Camp Shortland (the park across from Nobby’s Beach) at 1 pm, representatives of the Greek Orthodox Church and Community of Newcastle, will be attending an official presentation to the Novocastrians, of a unique piece of marble, which comes from the Island of Thassos, Greece, and is considered to be the only pure marble on the planet.
This marble will be used by the well known artist Roger McFarlane, to create a monument, dedicated to the awareness and resilience of people who struggle with mental health illness and their families in our community.
Mr McFarlane, an experienced sculptor, has carved large sculpture s in many parts of the world. His sculptures are in China, South Korea, Brazil and Switzerland.
This “piece” of Hellas which will be situated in the heart of Newcastle is the second such piece to be decorating our beautiful city. The first is a piece of marble from Ancient Olympia which can be found at the Hellenic Community Centre of the Greek Orthodox Church in Hamilton NSW. This was sent by the Greek Government, together with the appropriate certificate of authenticity, as a gift when the Community Centre was built in 2002.
The Consul of Greece, Mr. Geoff Antoniades, the Rector of the Orthodox Church of Newcastle, Fr Nicholas Scordilis, the President of the Community Mr Paul Milonas, and young members of the Community wearing their National Costumes and other distinguished guests will also be attending on Sunday.
