Liverpool beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge

cq5dam_web_235_137

Two goals from Philippe Coutinho and a Christian Benteke strike allowed Liverpool to come from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. It marked Jurgen Klopp’s first league win since taking over as manager of Liverpool and made it six defeats in the Barclays Premier League for Jose Mourinho this season.

A Ramires header had given Chelsea the lead after four minutes, but Coutinho fired Liverpool level in style just before half-time.

Oscar came close with a long-range chip, but chances were few in the second half until another Coutinho effort clipped John Terry and flew past Asmir Begovic. Benteke then made sure of the points with a composed finish in the closing minutes.

Ramires, who signed a new four-year deal this week, gave Chelsea the perfect start. Diego Costa’s back-heel gave Cesar Azpilicueta time and space to cross from the left and the Brazilian arrived to power a header across Simon Mignolet and into the bottom corner.

Liverpool responded well. Nathaniel Clyne dragged a snapshot wide from 18 yards before Adam Lallana tested Begovic from close range, as Chelsea showed an improved rearguard resilience against the visitors’ possessional dominance.

But they were undone by a moment of brilliance from Coutinho in the dying seconds of the half. The Brazilian twisted away from Ramires on the edge of the box before curling a brilliant left-foot finish beyond Begovic and into the far corner.

Chances were scarce in the early part of the second half but Kenedy almost made an immediate impact after replacing Eden Hazard, driving into the area past Clyne before scuffing a shot wide of the near post.

Oscar almost lit up Stamford Bridge with a brilliant effort from close to halfway but a retreating Mignolet reacted well to tip the ball wide, a save that proved pivotal as Liverpool snatched the lead moments later.

Following Benteke’s knockdown, Coutinho picked up the loose ball on the edge of the Chelsea box and his right-footed shot took a deflection off Terry and nestled high in Begovic’s net.

Alberto Moreno almost made it three two minutes later as he surged into the area on the break but Begovic stuck out a leg to deny him at the near post. Then Jordon Ibe’s deflected effort after cutting in from the right had the Chelsea goalkeeper scrambling across goal.

Liverpool made sure of the victory soon after as substitute Benteke turned into space in the penalty area before slotting a composed finish across Begovic into the bottom corner with seven minutes to play.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: “What I see from my players was good until a moment where they felt it was impossible to do better. The fight goes on but sometimes there are fights that are very impossible to win. I can play against any team, against any manager, win, lose but more than this…”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “We had not the best start, that’s the truth. We had our moments, our build up with short passes was very good. We had control of these situations. We made a goal and deserved the draw at half-time. The second half was open and we made our goals at perfect moments for us. I feel it’s deserved. We have worked hard but it’s normal if you want to win in Chelsea.”

What happened to Flight KGL-9268

skynews.img.1200.745

Flight KGL-9268 crashed just 23 minutes after take-off.

As investigators reach the wreckage Sky News looks at what we know and what may have caused the disaster.

:: What happened?

– See more at: http://www.skynews.com.au/news/top-stories/2015/10/31/what-happened-to-flight-kgl-9268.html#sthash.wKhcIaSg.dpuf

The Airbus A321, operated by a small Russian airline bound for St Petersburg, took off from the holiday resort of Sharm el-Sheikh at 5.58am local time carrying 224 people – mostly tourists.

At 6.20am it vanished from radar screens while flying at an altitude of 31,000ft over the mountainous area of Arish and went into a “rapid descent”.

:: Who was on board?

Egyptian authorities say the plane was carrying 217 adults, 17 children and seven crew.

:: Is the A321 safe?

According to former head of flight operations at the Civil Aviation Authority Mike Vivian, the aircraft has an “excellent safety record”.

:: And the airline?

It’s a small airline, with only around six jets, that mainly operates internal flights and some holiday flights to Turkey and Egypt.

It is not on the EU blacklist of Russian airlines banned over European airspace and has had only one serious incident – in 2011 there was a problem with an aircraft on the ground which caused an accident killing three people.

:: Was it mechanical failure?

Unlikely, say experts. Mainly because of the the A321’s good performance. Airsafe.com gives it a mid-table ranking with just 0.10 incidents per one million flights.

However, Egyptian authorities have suggested the pilot did contact air traffic controllers saying that there was a technical problem.

:: What else could have caused it?

Weather conditions could have been a factor, but there were no reports of poor weather in the area. In addition it could have been pilot error. Again, experts say this is unlikely.

:: Terrorists?

Mr Vivian said “hostile action” should not be ruled out, but Egyptian authorities were quick to shut down suggestions the plane had been shot from the sky.

Russia last month launched military strikes in Syria against IS and other rebel groups fighting the Bashar al-Assad regime.

IS has control over some Sinai territory and other rebel groups in the region have sworn allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

:: What is key for investigators?

Rescue teams are now at the crash site and will be searching for the black boxes to help them gain greater insight into what happened in the short time before the plane began its rapid descent.

Experts say they will be looking for signs to tell them whether the plane broke up in the sky, which would suggest an explosion at altitude.

:: And survivors?

Rescue teams have said they can hear voices of people trapped in the plane wreckage.

Five children have been found dead, other bodies have been found still strapped in their seats.

Halloween: Spooky holiday has roots in pagan traditions and early Christianity

6291550-3x2-700x467

It is Halloween, the time of year when pumpkin sales go through the roof, children go trick or treating and when those celebrating dress up as witches, skeletons, ghosts and other mythical creatures.

If pumpkin sales are an accurate guide, Halloween is steadily growing in popularity in Australia — a trend many believe is from the US.

Australia’s biggest supplier of jack-o’-lantern pumpkins, Stackelroth Farms near Bowen in Queensland, says it is only 14 years since it planted the very first crop in Australia from seed sourced in the US.

Already this year, in the space of barely four weeks, the farm has sold 500 tonnes of jack-o’-lanterns in Australia (at an average of five kilograms each, that is about 100,000 pumpkins), to customers including the big supermarket chains Coles and Woolworths.

US holiday has Celtic pagan origins

Despite its huge popularity in the US, Halloween is widely believed to have its origins in a Celtic pagan festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sow-en”) that dates back more than 2,000 years.

According to the website Irish Genealogy Toolkit, “Sam” translates as summer, and “hain” means end in the Irish language.

In Celtic times, October 31 was the end of the year and Samhain was the end of summer, when crops had been harvested and the darkest period of the year began.

Even today Samhain is the Irish name for the 11th month, November.

Samhain is historically seen as a mostly Irish festival, but it was also celebrated by Celts in Scotland and other parts of the British Isles and northern Europe.

Because pagan life revolved around the harvest, Samhain was the time of year when the earth was dying. Livestock was either brought in to shelter or slaughtered.

Hence the festival had an emphasis on death. Many Samhain rituals were based on superstition. Celts believed the souls of their ancestors would return to their homes and that malevolent spirits wandered the Earth.

They would light bonfires and burn effigies as a form of sacrifice. Gifts and food were offered to honour the dead or appease evil spirits and ensure a bountiful harvest the following year.

Many Halloween historians believe this custom is the origin of today’s trick or treating.

Similarly, many Celts wore masks or costumes to disguise and protect themselves from the malevolent spirits or stop the dead from recognising those individuals they had disliked during life.

Celtic tales are full of mystical creatures like fairies, demons and pagan gods, often with evil or magical powers. Many historians believe they are the origin of Halloween’s more sinister side.

Christians gave demonic holiday its name

The name Halloween has its roots in early Christianity.

Religious historians say the Roman Catholic Church, in an effort to convert pagans, deliberately chose the first day of Samhain, November 1, as All Saints Day to honour those saints who did not already have a day of their own.

The mass became known as “Allhallowmas” — or the mass of those who are hallowed.

October 31 became All Hallows Eve, and today Halloween.

One Roman ritual was a festival celebrating Pomona — a goddess of fruits such as apples.

Traditional Halloween games such as apple-bobbing are believed to have had their origin in this period. A form of apple-bobbing, called snap apple, is still one of the most popular Halloween games in Ireland.

Children are blindfolded and have to bite an apple suspended on a string or floating in a basin.

‘Stingy Jack’ may have started pumpkin tradition

So why is Halloween synonymous with the pumpkin?

One English historian Ronald Hutton says “turnips or mangel wurzels, hollowed out to act as lanterns and often carved with grotesque faces”, were used at Halloween, or Samhain, in Ireland and Scotland.

Others say the tradition comes from an ancient Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack, who was condemned to walk for eternity between heaven and hell with only a hollowed-turnip lantern to light his way.

Either way, without doubt the traditions of Halloween spread to the US with the huge waves of Irish immigrants fleeing Ireland during the famine of the 1840s and 1850s.

Since then, America has adapted Halloween and its rituals as a proudly American tradition. Pumpkin pie is a distinctly American dish.

The Irish today also celebrate Halloween with bonfires, costumes and pumpkins. But the traditional Halloween dinner in Ireland is “colcannon” — a dish of potatoes, cabbage and onions.

It possibly originated from an earlier tradition where the poor would go door to door to ask the rich for food or money — another precursor to trick or treating.

Similarly, Barm Brack is a sweet bread eaten at Halloween, containing coins or a small object inside and used to tell fortunes.

Sometimes it is a ring, and whoever pulls the ring from their dinner is predicted to marry within a year.

The Halloween tradition is still relatively new in Australia. One vegetable seller in Sydney says he has sold jack-o’-lantern pumpkins for less than 20 years.

But pumpkin farmers say they have already made changes to adapt the Halloween tradition to the Australian climate.

Jack-o’-lantern pumpkins have grown as a pre-winter crop for generations in the US and northern hemisphere. But in Australia, Halloween falls at the end of winter.

Stackelroth Farms says it has spent years researching and developing a variety of jack-o’-lantern that grows and ripens at the opposite end of year.

Big win for Reds, big loss for Greens

armani_olympiakos_web-thumb-large

Olympiakos made it two wins of three in the Euroleague with victory at Armani Milano on Friday, one day after Panathinaikos got demolished by Barcelona in Spain.

Featuring an improved Vassilis Spanoulis, who notched up 14 points in Milan, Olympiakos won 71-66 in Italy in a tight game where the Reds had the upper hand almost throughout after overcoming an early Armani lead.

The Greek champion had a 62 percent rate in two-pointers, against Armani’s 41 percent, making the most of its attacks at a court where it usually has problems.

Patric Young was the top scorer for the Reds with 18 points.

Barcelona outclassed Panathinaikos on a particularly poor night for the Greens in Spain, scoring a 25-point win (77-52) that has marked a season-low for the Greek league leader to date.

Panathinaikos only tried to match its host in the third period, reducing its deficit to seven points (48-41), before surrendering to the might of the Catalans.

Worse, influential forward James Gist – scorer of 13 points on the night – returned with an injury that is ruling him out for the next couple of weeks.

In the Eurocup on Wednesday Aris scored a precious win at Unics Kazan in overtime (74-73) and AEK beat another Russian team, Nizhny Novgorod 87-70 at home. PAOK lost 100-80 at home to Besiktas.

New refugee drownings in Aegean prompt Tsipras outcry

refugee_father_waves-thumb-large

The rising death toll in the Aegean, where at least 35 people drowned on Friday while trying to reach Greece, prompted Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to lash out at countries within the European Union that he believes are not doing enough to help tackle the crisis.

“I feel ashamed as a member of this European leadership, both for the inability of Europe in dealing with this human drama, and for the level of debate at a senior level, where one is passing the buck to the other,” Tsipras told Parliament.

His outburst came after more boats carrying refugees and migrants sank near Greek islands. There were several children among those who drowned.

More than 100 children and infants have drowned in the Aegean over the last two months. Tsipras accused some European officials of not caring about these deaths and “crying crocodile tears” over them.

He said that Greece would continue to provide assistance and dismissed the idea that his government was seeking something in return.

“Greece is in crisis. We are a poor people, but we have retained our values and humanity, and we aren’t claiming a single euro to do our duty to people who are dying in our back yard,” Tsipras said.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias also called on the EU to take greater responsibility for the problem.

“Some member-states cannot just think that this is not a European problem but one that five or six countries have to deal with,” he said following a meeting in Athens with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

“Instead of attacking and criticizing each other, it is very important we find common solutions,” said the visiting envoy, who also told Kathimerini that his government favors the creation of a European agency to guard the EU’s borders that would help Greece patrol the Aegean.

Spyros Galinos, the mayor of Lesvos, which has seen the biggest influx of all the Aegean islands, called on European officials to reach an agreement with Turkey for refugees to be processed on the neighboring country’s soil.

“Refugees have to be registered in Turkey so we prevent so many people from drowning,” he said. “Our mortuary is full of dead bodies and we have to get a license to create a new area where the dead can be buried.”

Galinos suggested that if the EU is not able to secure the cooperation of Turkey, then passenger ships have to be sent across the Aegean to pick up the refugees and bring them to Lesvos, where they can be registered.

“We are not talking about managing a problem, we are talking about stopping a crime,” he said.

Man bitten by shark at Bald Head, near Albany

732439-6f7593cc-7edc-11e5-83e9-3a866ec87951
A MAN attacked by a shark near Albany says his speargun saved his life after he escaped with a stomach wound that needed stitches.

Norman Galli, 50, says he was lucky to be alive after being bitten by what he believes to be a great white while spearfishing early on Friday afternoon.

The attack happened at Bald Island, east of Cheynes Beach and about 60km east of Albany where teenager Jay Muscat was killed just after Christmas last year.

Mr Galli, a spearfisherman for 42 years and an experienced diver, told Seven News only his speargun stopped the shark from crushing and killing him.

“(I was) swimming right up next to the island when all of a sudden, without seeing anything, I got hit on the right hand side with a great force,” the Attadale man said.

He alerted two friends he had been fishing with on a nearby boat and presented to Albany Regional Hospital, where he received seven stitches to his stomach.

“Without a doubt the speargun saved my life, it was in my right hand and that’s what saved my life,” he said.

“Spearfishermen, we always say, the shark that is going to bite you is probably the one you don’t see and I can honestly say I did not see this shark at all.

“I’m a very lucky man, i’ve bought two lotto tickets and I’m just really grateful.”

Mr Galli was discharged from the hospital at about 3.30pm.

A worker at Cheynes Beach Caravan Park, who did not want to be named, confirmed the man had been spearfishing off the far end of Bald Island.

She said he was calm after walking out of the ocean and was driven to hospital by a friend.

“He’s got minor injuries,” she said.

“No ambulances were called — nothing like that.

“They just took themselves in. They didn’t even ask for bandage.”

The size and species of the shark has not been confirmed. The Department of Fisheries is continuing to investigate the incident.

No charge over Pearce-Stevenson questioning

b1bf39251dded7fe86067656a4e2fed5

The former girlfriend of the man accused of murdering Karlie Pearce-Stevenson has been questioned by police investigating her death and that of her daughter Khandalyce.

A wheelchair-bound Hazel Passmore attended Adelaide Police Station with her lawyer and partner on Friday, after it was discovered she had photos of the murdered two-year-old on her Facebook page.

The 33-year-old was questioned for several hours, but no charges were laid by the end of the day and she left the station.

The emergence of the haunting photos of Khandalyce is the latest development in the multi-state investigation into the murders.Ms Passmore, of Davoren Park, is the former partner of Daniel Holdom, who has been charged with the murder of 20-year-old Alice Springs mother Ms Pearce-Stevenson.

Holdom remains in custody after appearing before a NSW court on Thursday,Police revealed earlier this week that Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s identity and mobile phone has been used for years after her death to mislead family and defraud social services.

Almost $100,000 was taken from her bank account between 2008 and 2012 and a woman in a wheelchair impersonated her at a Centrelink interview in 2010.

The investigation continues.

Newcastle Jets go top after stunning Melbourne City 3-2

melbourne-city-v-newcastle-jets_dgnkca7ki9i91q1y4407yglie
A stirring second half comeback has earned Newcastle Jets a remarkable come-from-behind 3-2 win over Melbourne City FC at AAMI Park on Friday night.

City appeared to be cruising after an early strike from Aaron Mooy and a superb team goal from Stefan Mauk gave the hosts a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into the break.

But a header from Ben Kantarovski and a brace from Serbian striker Milos Trifunovic secured the Jets a rare win in Melbourne and sent Scott Miller’s side to the top of the Hyundai A-League.

WHAT THEY SAID

“It was quite a good feeling (to score) and hopefully I can get some more the rest of the season. It’s a good result by the boys, I think we fought hard to get back in the game and slowly fought our way into the lead.” – Newcastle Jets’ Ben Kantarovsji

“I think lapses of concentration let us down. The first one was an unmarked header, same with the third one. The penalty I know it hits his hand but it’s ball to hand it’s not hand to ball. It’s just one of those things we need to improve.” – Melbourne City’s Patrick Kisnorbo

GOALS

1-0 (Aaron Mooy 12’) – The Socceroo midfielder beat David Carney with a neat swivel on the edge of the box before unleashing a rasping drive which deflected past the helpless Mark Birighitti.

2-0 (Stefan Mauk 22’) – The youngster picked up the ball on the halfway line before playing a neat one-two with Ben Garuccio on the edge of the Jets box. Running at the defence, Mauk played the ball to David Williams who produced a delicate flick over the top for the midfielder to chest down and smash home.

2-1 (Ben Kantarovski 58’) – Mateo Poljak was left in acres of space with the midfielder dinking a beautiful cross to Kantarovski who’s pinpoint header nestled into the far corner, leaving Sorensen with no chance.

2-2 (Milos Trifunovic 74’) – Wade Dekker was penalised for a handball inside the Jets box and Trifunovic coolly slotted from the spot to put the visitors back on level terms.

2-3 (Milos Trifunovic 80’) – David Carney whipped in a wicked free kick from a wide position with Trifunovic rising highest before powering a header past the stationary Sorensen.
KEY MOMENT

After struggling to deal with City’s octane approach in the opening 45 minutes, the Jets turned things around in the second half and Kantarovski’s strike gave them belief of a turnaround. But the handball decision against Wade Dekker inside the Jets’ area turned the match on its head, with Trifunovic’s goal handing the visitors all the momentum.

HIGHLIGHTS REEL

David Carney has been the bright spark for the Jets in opening rounds and the former Socceroo was again outstanding for Scott Miller’s side. He was a constant threat down the flank for the Jets and crucially set up the winner for Trifunovic.

COACH KILLER

Bruno Fornaroli has set the Hyundai A-League in the opening month but the Uruguayan spurned a golden opportunity in just the third minute. The striker was all alone at the back post from a corner but he skewed his header wide when it appeared easier to score.
BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

Brazilian playmaker Leonardo was a notable absentee for the Jets and his replacement Mitch Cooper struggled to make an impact in midfield. The youngster toiled hard but the Jets’ lack of possession in the opening stanza didn’t help his cause and was subsequently replaced at half-time by the industrious Cameron Watson.

The Jets’ lack of depth is a concern, especially in the final third but youngsters Brandon Lundy and Andy Brennan are options for Scott Miller in wide areas.

THE FINAL WORD

The Jets have now won three out of their first four and are surprise league leaders, for 24 hours at least. Scott Miller has instilled a new found belief at Newcastle as their stirring second half comeback showed. The Jets will enjoy two home games over the next fortnight which could set them up for the rest of the season.

John van’t Schip would be disappointed with his side’s inability to kill the Jets off in the first half after completely dominating the play. City struggled to run out the game in the second half and substitutes Corey Gameiro and Wade Dekker failed to make an impact. Four points from the opening four games is an average return for one of the title favourites and they will need to regroup ahead of next week’s clash against Adelaide.
