A Queensland-bred “super plum” is set to earn the Queensland Government millions of dollars in royalties in the next 20 years.

“Interest in the high antioxidant plum is coming from every major stone fruit growing country in the world,” Nutrafruit’s Hugh Macintosh said.

“We’ve had calls from Romania, Spain, South America, South Africa, the UK, the USA, across Europe and China, everywhere.”

Nutrafruit has the exclusive licence to market and produce the Queen Garnet plum, which was bred by the Queensland Department of Primary Industry.

The plum has very high levels of anthocyanins, which are believed to provide a range of health benefits.

In a trial run by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), researchers were shocked when obese rats fed the dark red plum returned to their normal body weight, despite staying on a high calorie diet.

“We actually bring everything back to normal. Blood pressure, heart function, liver structure and function, hormone changes, the obesity, all of these come back to normal, despite this incredible junk food diet,” said USQ Professor Lindsay Brown.

“What we saw in the tissues of these animals there were no more inflammatory cells after treatment. Inflammatory cells cause long term damage to any tissue they are in. We are seeing this incredibly effective anti-inflammatory action.”

After Australian media reports about the fat rat trial results were picked up by the international media last year, Nutrafruit was inundated with calls from around the world.

“People wanted to know how they could get trees and where they could buy the fruit and the juice,” Mr Macintosh said.

“It reminds me of the baby formula crisis. People are saying we can’t find it where can we buy it?”

‘I don’t think anyone could have imagined the reaction’

Nutrafruit is a consortium of Queensland agribusiness mates which bought the rights to the plum from the Queensland Government in 2010.

The company sub-licences tree nurseries to produce the trees, and has handpicked orchardists in each state to grow them.

The company has just hosted a delegation from Spain, which will be one of the first overseas countries to plant Queensland Government orchards.

Mr Macintosh predicted there would be several million trees in the ground within five years, half a million of those in Australia.

The first and biggest orchard in the country with 75,000 trees is near Inglewood in south east Queensland, owned by woolgrower Bim Goodrich, who said he was shocked by the worldwide interest.

“I don’t think anyone could have imagined the reaction. It’s just amazing,” he said.

At $12 a kilogram, Queen Garnet plums are twice the price of normal plums.

Mr Macintosh has heard reports of some fruiters charging $18.

Brisbane fruit wholesaler Viny Byrne struggled to meet demand for the fruit this summer, and said in 20 years he has never seen such strong interest in any fruit or vegetable.

“It’s very exciting for the industry, and the potential for export is huge.

“This will kill it in Asia. The market there has an insatiable appetite for things like this.”

He said everyone was waiting to see if trials on humans mirror the results seen in the fat rats.

“If we get proof of that, the sky is the limit.”

Early human trial results ‘amazing’

Insatiable consumer demand and high fruit prices means Australian farmers are keen to plant Queen Garnets, but only those approved by Nutrafruit will be licensed to grow the trees.

“Thirteen orchards are currently being planted. We have an organic grower in Swan Hill who has put in 40,000 trees, there are 20,000 going in around Shepparton and a similar number in WA,” said the Goodrich Fruit Co’s orchard manager, Rowan Berecry.

“A fellow in Tasmania is going to put some in, and in New South Wales we have a grower putting in 50,000.”

Meanwhile, a clinical trial to see how the plum affects humans is being run in Victoria.

Professor Brown said early indications were “amazing”.

“We are getting really good results on blood pressure,” he said.

“It’s a fairly short trial so weight [loss] might be a bit much to hope for within 12 weeks in humans, as eight weeks in rats is something like two years to humans.”

The leader of USQ’s Functional Foods Research Group is pleased more research into the Queen Garnet plum is being done.

The University of Wollongong is testing the Queen Garnet on elderly participants in a dementia trial, and the Queensland Government has awarded a three-year research fellowship to Dr Sunil Panchal who worked with Professor Brown on the “fat rat” experiment.

“Sunil will try and develop some of these products with industry. I think that is really exciting, and certainly the way forward,” Professor Brown said.

“Treating chronic diseases or delaying their onset would make a tremendous change to the health care budget.”

The Chairman of Summerfruits Australia said the Queen Garnet was the most exciting development in the stone fruit industry in living memory.

Andy Finlay said the plum’s extraordinary success showed the value of government investment in research and development.

“I think it’s a real shame this project closed down when you have something like this which comes out of it now being hailed as a world super food,” he said.

“There is value in R&D and it does not always pay off on the day you spend the money. It’s something for the future and that’s what we’ve seen with this variety.”

As a tribute to Pandelis Pandelidis

Let me first begin by expressing our deep appreciation and gratitude to the Greek Australian community for your heartfelt condolences and the respect and patience you have afforded us in this time of great tragedy and bereavement. You should all be commended and I sincerely thank you.

After many discussions and deliberations with Antonis Remos, we have decided to go ahead with all scheduled Australian performances this May. Remos was not only Pantelidis’ idol and mentor but also one of his most beloved and respected friends. Remos is of the strong belief that Pantelidis would have wanted us to continue with the show in his honour and as a celebration of his life and immense talent.

The concerts will be held as a tribute to this great man who passed away so tragically and all too soon. Unfortunately, we will never hear his angelic voice and soul-wrenching lyrics again but, as a tribute to him, we announce there will be at least two other artists joining Remos on stage to honour his memory and help us say goodbye. The identities of the artists will be announced within the next 48 hours. Although Pantelidis can never be replaced, you can be sure that these artists are among the best in the industry and will do his memory and his music the justice it deserves.

This is going to be an amazing, emotional and befitting way to commemorate an artist who touched all of our hearts and souls. One of the greatest talents the Greek music industry has ever known.

Με αυτό τον τρόπο, ίσως κάποια στιγμή να επιτρέψει σε ασθενείς με σημαντικά προβλήματα κινητικότητας ή επικοινωνίας να ελέγξουν κάποιο βιονικό προσθετικό μέλος ή την αναπηρική τους καρέκλα.

«Η μεγάλη πρωτοπορία αυτού του συστήματος έγκειται στο ότι έχουμε αλληλεπίδραση εγκεφάλου – κομπιούτερ με έναν τρόπο ελάχιστα παρεμβατικό, έναν τρόπο που μπορεί να αποδειχθεί μακροπρόθεσμα χρήσιμος», τόνισε ο δρ Τέρι Ο’Μπράιαν, επικεφαλής του τμήματος Ιατρικής και Νευρολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Μελβούρνης.

«Σήμερα για να διαβαστούν τα εγκεφαλικά σήματα απαιτούνται βαριές και πολύπλοκες ανοιχτές χειρουργικές επεμβάσεις στον εγκέφαλο, ενώ έπειτα από μικρό χρονικό διάστημα μερικών μηνών το σύστημα καθίσταται αναποτελεσματικό, γι’ αυτό και σπάνια εφαρμόζεται», τόνισε ο Αυστραλός ειδικός. Αντιθέτως, το stentrode είναι λιγότερο παρεμβατικό, καθώς μπορεί να εμφυτευθεί στον οργανισμό μέσω ενός αιμοφόρου αγγείου στον αυχένα του ασθενούς και να τοποθετηθεί σε ένα μεγάλο αγγείο κοντά στον εγκέφαλο.

Τα πειράματα που πραγματοποιήθηκαν σε ζώα είχαν ως στόχο την εξακρίβωση της αποτελεσματικότητας του εμφυτεύματος, όσον αφορά στην αιχμαλώτιση των νευρωνικών σημάτων, και όχι τη μετατροπή τους σε σήματα που θα κινήσουν το βιονικό μέλος, κάτι που είναι τεχνολογικά εφικτό, όπως επισημαίνουν οι ειδικοί.

Το stentrode, επίσης, μπορεί να έχει και άλλες χρήσεις, όπως παραδείγματος χάριν, την καταγραφή των εγκεφαλικών σημάτων ανθρώπων που πάσχουν από επιληψία, ώστε να υπάρχει προειδοποίηση για μία επικείμενη επιληπτική κρίση. Επιπροσθέτως, ο καθηγητής Κλάιβ Μέι από το Ινστιτούτο Νευροεπιστημών και Ψυχικής Υγείας Φλόρεϊ, επισημαίνει ότι μία ακόμα χρήση του πρωτοποριακού εμφυτεύματος είναι η επικοινωνία του ασθενούς με έναν ηλεκτρονικό υπολογιστή. «Ωστόσο, αυτοί που θα χρησιμοποιήσουν το εμφύτευμα θα πρέπει να εκπαιδευθούν πώς θα σκέπτονται σωστά προκειμένου να λειτουργήσει το σύστημα. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο είναι μία διαδικασία που θυμίζει τη μουσική διδασκαλία. Πρέπει να εκπαιδευθείς. Ίσως μάλιστα στην αρχή να είναι λίγο δύσκολο, αλλά τελικά τα καταφέρνεις και γίνεται κάτι φυσικό».

Το πρωτοποριακό εμφύτευμα αναπτύσσεται από το Πανεπιστήμιο Μελβούρνης, από το Βασιλικό Νοσοκομείο Μελβούρνης και από το Ινστιτούτο Νευροεπιστημών και Ψυχικής Υγείας Φλόρεϊ και συγχρηματοδοτείται από την κυβέρνηση της Αυστραλίας και τις ένοπλες δυνάμεις των ΗΠΑ, που βλέπουν τα μελλοντικά οφέλη που θα μπορούσε να έχει για τους παραπληγικούς βετεράνους.

Δύο φιλικούς αγώνες θα δώσει, τελικά, η Εθνική Ελλάδας με την Αυστραλία, αφού μετά το παιχνίδι στις 4 Ιουνίου στο Σίδνεϊ, η «γαλανόλευκη» θα αντιμετωπίσει την ομάδα του Άγγελου Ποστέκογλου τρεις ημέρες αργότερα στη Μελβούρνη.

Η σχετική ανακοίνωση έγινε το Σάββατο το πρωί και την επιβεβαίωσε ο πολιτειακός πρωθυπουργός, Ντάνιελ Άντριους, το ίδιο βράδυ στο Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ της Lonsdale Street.

Malcolm Turnbull has elevated trust and economic competence as the key requirements in a changing economy just as real estate overtakes mining to become Australia’s most profitable industry.

Real estate produced $8.6 billion of taxable profit in a quarter, ahead of the old mainstay of mining, which produced just $3.6 billion.

Speaking at a Canberra-based, hi-tech defence company, CEA Technologies, the Prime Minister returned to his favoured territory of agility and innovation, in a noticeable change of rhetoric after a week in which he had been widely criticised for being too negative about Labor’s negative gearing plans.

“You see for us to succeed in the 21st century, we have to transition from an economy that has built around a mining-construction boom, to a new economy. That is an economy based on innovation, on technology, on opening markets,” he said.

But he did not entirely leave Labor’s policy alone, continuing to deride its implications for an economy still looking for all of the growth available.

The latest figures, from the Bureau of Statistics, came as Mr Turnbull called for the transition away from mining to “technologies of the future”.

“We have seen the biggest mining boom in our history,” he told Parliament later in the day. “The economy has been driven by a massive level of mining construction investment. That is tailing off.

“What is Labor’s tax policy going to do? Undermine confidence, undermine the value of the largest asset class, the family home. ”

The figures show rental, hiring and real estate service companies made $14 billion before tax in the second half of 2015 while mining companies made only $9.8 billion.

Real estate profits were twice those of the retail and construction industries and way in excess of those of the finance and insurance industries, which recorded a combined loss.

Two years earlier, mining profits were five times those of real estate.

The turnaround means the fortunes of the real estate industry are now more important to the budget than those of the mining industry.

In Parliament, Treasurer Scott Morrison said Labor’s policy of halving the amount of each capital gain exempt from tax would lift the tax rate on capital gains by 50 per cent.

“At a time when we’re trying to encourage investment in the transition of our economy, their policy is one big fat tax on investment.”

As both men wrestle with tax reform options, including a possible crimping of negative gearing tax breaks, at least one backbencher, John ‘Wacka” Williams, believes the facility should be expanded to encourage wealthier Australians to invest in productive assets in the bush.

The straight-talking NSW Nationals senator believes that losses of investors incurred on interest payments on farms should once again be claimable against all primary income for wealthier Australians – that is, those earning gross incomes above $250,000, a group that includes federal MPs.

Currently, under the Higher Income Superannuation Charge, all income is assessed as relevant and once that income exceeds $250,000, then the deduction of losses against taxable income – ie, negative gearing – is not allowed.

The little-known provision was inserted by Labor treasurer Wayne Swan in the 2012 budget and commenced as at January, 2013.

Citing his own experience of purchasing a hobby farm that year, Senator Williams said the acquisition had revealed an anomaly in which he could have negatively geared a relatively unproductive asset, such as an existing house, claiming its interest payments against his income, but not his farm because it is classified as a business.

“Labor always says we got to have open slather to let foreigners buy our farms, they were critical when we tightened those regulations up, but they don’t want Australians to buy farms, obviously,” he said.

He said the rule meant in effect there was no incentive for doctors, dentists, politicians, or anyone else who was well paid, to buy a business in the country, thus taking investment to those regions.

Senator Williams has raised with his colleagues the idea of scrapping the $250,000 salary cut-off, in a move that would amount to widening negative gearing, just as Mr Morrison is believed to be searching for ways of narrowing what he has termed “excessive” use at the top end.

Labor probed the Prime Minister and the Treasurer on what constituted “excesses” in Parliament on Monday but to no practical avail.

The government, however, is now set to release its tax plans prior to the Budget, due to political pressures.

Meanwhile, a backbench group of economic dries remains cautiously hopeful that any negative gearing changes aimed at reducing its use would not pass muster in the Coalition party room.

(Η θρυλική ιστορία της «καρδιάς του Ντιζόν»)

Το βιβλίο, των Greg Callaghan και Ian Cuthbertson Doujons Heart («Η καρδιά του Ντιζόν», εκδ. Allen & Unwin 2015) αναφέρεται στην υπόθεση, που έκανε το γύρο του κόσμου στα πρωτοσέλιδα και τα δελτία ειδήσεων, σχετικά με τη δολοφονία του 20χρονου Αυστραλού από το Σίδνεϊ, Ντιζόν Ζάμιτ. Ο τελευταίος έχασε τη ζωή του τον Ιούλιο του 2008, υποκύπτοντας στις κρανιοεγκεφαλικές κακώσεις που υπέστη μετά από ανελέητο ξυλοδαρμό και χτυπήματα από Έλληνες μπράβους ενός νυχτερινού κέντρου στη Μύκονο όπου βρισκόταν για διακοπές, εξαιτίας μιας αμφιλεγόμενης κλοπής γυναικείας τσάντας από το θύμα. Αυτό όμως που συγκλόνισε περισσότερο την παγκόσμια κοινή γνώμη -ιδιαίτερα στην Αυστραλία και την Ελλάδα- ήταν η απόφαση των βαρυπενθούντων γονιών του θύματος (Όλιβερ και Ρόζμαρι) να δωρίσουν τα όργανα του γιου τους, και μάλιστα σε Έλληνες λήπτες – πραγματοποιώντας έτσι την επιθυμία του αδικοχαμένου Ντιζόν να γίνει δότης οργάνων.

Το παράδοξο αυτής της ιστορίας, που μοιάζει με θρίλερ, είναι το γεγονός ότι την ίδια ημέρα που χτύπησαν θανάσιμα τον Ντιζόν, οι γιατροί του Ελληνοαυστραλού δημοσιογράφου, Κώστα Γρίμπιλα (που έμελλε να είναι ο τυχερός λήπτης της καρδιάς του Ντιζόν) τού ανακοίνωναν στο νοσοκομείο πως, λόγω της σοβαρής του καρδιολογικής ανεπάρκειας, είχε μόνο δύο βδομάδες ζωής, αν στο μεταξύ δεν βρισκόταν κατάλληλος δότης καρδιάς. Καταδικασμένος (από τους γιατρούς) σε θάνατο, ο Κώστας Γρίμπιλας είχε παρακολουθήσει από την τηλεόραση του νοσοκομείου τα καθέκαστα της άγριας δολοφονίας του νεαρού Αυστραλού και είχε ακούσει εμβρόντητος τη σπαρακτική ανακοίνωση του χαροκαμένου πατέρα του θύματος πως η οικογένειά του αποφάσισε να δωρίσει τα όργανα του γιου της σε Έλληνες πάσχοντες που τα είχαν άμεσα ανάγκη.

Ωστόσο, ούτε στα πιο άγρια όνειρά του δεν φανταζόταν ότι πρώτος και κύριος ευεργετούμενος λήπτης της καρδιάς του Ντιζόν θα ήταν ο ίδιος! Ιδιαίτερα όταν στις 2 Αυγούστου, έχοντας αποχαιρετίσει για τελευταία φορά (όπως νόμιζε) την αγαπημένη του σύντροφο, την οικογένεια και τους φίλους του, κι έμπαινε στο χειρουργείο από το οποίο αμφέβαλλε αν θα ξανάβγαινε ζωντανός. Κι όμως, την επόμενη μέρα, ο σοβαρά καρδιοπαθής Ελληνοαυστραλός ξυπνούσε από το βαθύ λήθαργο του αναισθητικού άκρως καταπονημένος από την πολύωρη εγχείρηση, αλλά νιώθοντας ξαναγεννημένος με μια νέα καρδιά -αυτή του Ντιζόν- να χτυπά τώρα στο δικό του στήθος, η οποία του εξασφάλιζε μια φυσιολογική ζωή.

Το εν λόγω βιβλίο-ντοκουμέντο (που λανθασμένα χαρακτηρίζεται στο οπισθόφυλλο ως «απομνημονευματικό» [memoir] – αφού απομνημονεύματα γράφονται συνήθως από τους ίδιους τους πρωταγωνιστές και όχι από τρίτους) δεν είναι απλώς ενδιαφέρον αλλά και συναρπαστικό. Όχι μόνο επειδή είναι προσεκτικά φροντισμένο και καλογραμμένο, αλλά και γιατί (παραδόξως για το είδος του) χαρακτηρίζεται από σασπένς και αγωνία σαν να ήταν μυθιστόρημα – εξ ου και διαβάζεται σχεδόν απνευστί. Συχνά, βέβαια, οι δύο συγγραφείς καταχρώνται της ιδιότητάς τους ως τριτοπρόσωποι ρεπόρτερ και ξεπερνούν εαυτούς, καταστρατηγώντας τις ειδολογικές απαιτήσεις του «ντοκουμέντου», με το να συμπεριφέρονται ως παντογνώστες αφηγητές, διεισδύοντας -δίκην ποιητικής αδείας- στις (υποτιθέμενες) σκέψεις και τα συναισθήματα των προσώπων της ιστορίας – σαν να ήταν μυθοπλαστικοί και όχι αληθινοί χαρακτήρες.

Γενικά, όμως, ο αναγνώστης τείνει να παραβλέπει (θέλω να πιστεύω) αυτό το εμφανές ολίσθημα, αν δεν το επικροτεί κιόλας, κυρίως χάρη της ενδιαφέρουσας ιστορίας και συναρπαστικής αφήγησης που τον παρασύρει. Αυτό το ολίσθημα θα μπορούσε επίσης να δικαιολογηθεί ώς ένα βαθμό και απ’ το γεγονός ότι οι δύο συγγραφείς έχουν κάνει μια άκρως ευσυνείδητη κι ενδελεχή έρευνα, συγκεντρώνοντας ό,τι στοιχείο υπήρχε σχετικά με την εν λόγω υπόθεση την οποία και αξιοποιούν στο έπακρο. Από ερευνητική άποψη, πρόκειται για ένα ευσυνείδητο, τεκμηριωμένο, και υποδειγματικό εγχείρημα. Ένα εγχείρημα που δεν διεξάγεται με την αποστασιοποιημένη και ψυχρή επαγγελματική ματιά μιας δημοσιογραφικού είδους καταγραφής κι εξιστόρησης των γεγονότων, αλλά που έχει λάβει σοβαρά υπόψη και τον αντίστοιχο ανθρώπινο παράγοντα. Εξ ου και οι συγγραφείς παρακολουθούν με το οξυδερκές βλέμμα φυσιοδίφη όλες τις συναισθηματικές αποχρώσεις του «ουράνιου τόξου» των εμπλεκομένων – έστω κι αν, συχνά, γίνεται υπερβολή σ’ αυτό το ζήτημα, όπως προαναφέρθηκε. Αξιοπρόσεκτη είναι επίσης και η σωστή κατάρτιση των συγγραφέων για την σύγχρονη Ελλάδα (κουλτούρα, νοοτροπία, κοινωνικο-οικονομική πραγματικότητα).

Φρονώ ότι το υπό συζήτηση βιβλίο αποτελεί ένα απ’ τα αντιπροσωπευτικότερα κι ενδεχομένως καλύτερα δείγματα του είδους του – κυρίως όσον αφορά το περιβόητο “Greek-Australian connection”. Για τον απλούστατο λόγο ότι οι τραγικά χαροκαμένοι γονείς του θύματος, αντί να μισήσουν συλλήβδην τους Έλληνες (αφού Έλληνες αφαίρεσαν αναίτια τη ζωή του γιου τους) κατέπνιξαν τον αφόρητο πόνο τους, υπερέβησαν εαυτούς, και στάθηκαν υποδειγματικά στο ύψος των περιστάσεων. Έδειξαν το μεγαλείο και της δικής τους ψυχής (ξέχωρα απ’ αυτό της γεναιόδωρης ψυχής του πρόωρα χαμένου γιου τους) με το να χαρίσουν τα όργανα του αγαπημένου τους Ντιζόν σε Έλληνες που τα είχαν άμεσα ανάγκη για να κρατηθούν στη ζωή. Αγάπησαν τους Έλληνες και την Ελλάδα, παρ’ όλη τη σωματική και ψυχική ταλαιπωρία που τους δημιούργησε η αθάνατη ελληνική γραφειοκρατία και το ανάλγητο ελληνικό νομικό σύστημα, το οποίο τελικά και τους αδίκησε κατάφωρα με τις επιπόλαιες ποινές που επέβαλε στους ενόχους του εγκλήματος. Κι ακόμη: Η οικογένεια του Ντιζόν κατάφερε να σφυρηλατήσει στενότατους φιλικούς και ακατάλυτους δεσμούς με την οικογένεια του Κώστα Γρίμπιλα, εξαιτίας αυτής ακριβώς της τραγωδίας, η οποία επισημοποιήθηκε τελικά και με κουμπαριά.

Μέσα απ’ τα σκαμπανεβάσματα αυτής της ασυνήθιστης περιπέτειας, τις ποικιλόμορφες δοκιμασίες και τα παθήματα των πρωταγωνιστών της, οι δυο άγνωστες μεταξύ τους οικογένειες κατάφεραν να γεφυρώσουν την, ούτως ή άλλως, υπαρκτή “tyranny of distance” («τυραννία της απόστασης») που ανέκαθεν καταδυνάστευε τις δυο χώρες (Αυστραλία και Ελλάδα) και τους λαούς τους -γεωγραφικά και ψυχολογικά- φέρνοντάς τες κοντύτερα. Και το σημαντικότερο: Οι δυο οικογένειες – κυρίως ο Όλιβερ Ζάμιτ και ο Κώστας Γρίμπιλας – κατόρθωσαν να ενώσουν τις δυνάμεις τους και να δώσουν (είτε ατομικά είτε από κοινού) σπάνια μαθήματα μεγαλοψυχίας, συγχώρεσης και ανθρωπιάς, αναδεικνυόμενοι ως υπέρμαχοι και πρωταγωνιστές στην καμπάνια για τη δωρεά οργάνων παγκοσμίως – ιδιαίτερα όμως σε Ελλάδα (που υστερούσε απελπιστικά) αλλά και Αυστραλία. Αν μη τι άλλο, κατάφεραν να (απο)δείξουν ότι ακόμη και μέσα από τις πιο αντίξοες και κτηνώδεις συνθήκες μπορεί να ανθίσουν τα ομορφότερα λουλούδια. Διότι η αγάπη είναι η μοναδική δύναμη στον κόσμο που μπορεί να επιτελέσει αληθινά θαύματα: να θριαμβεύσει έναντι του κακού, έτσι που ο θάνατος να ανοίξει δρόμο στη ζωή, όπως συμπυκνώνει επιγραμματικά κι επιβεβαιώνει κατηγορηματικά η δήλωση του Κώστα Γρίμπιλα: «Πώς θα μπορούσα ποτέ να ξεχάσω τον Ντιζόν, όταν ο κάθε χτύπος μου υπενθυμίζει πόσο ευλογημένος είμαι;».

Εκείνο που κάνει τους μαθητές του Ελληνικού Σχολείου Ενορίας Αγίας Άννας Gold Coast μία καλή παρέα, είναι το ότι όλοι θέλουν να μάθουν την ελληνική γλώσσα και όλοι προσπαθούν όσο καλύτερα μπορούν να το καταφέρουν. Και, όπως διαπιστώνετε από τη φωτογραφία που μας έστειλε ο πιστός φίλος του «Νέου Κόσμου», Γιάννης Καρράς, η επιστροφή των μαθητών στο σχολείο τους ήταν μία ιδιαίτερα όμορφη στιγμή για όλους. Τώρα, μαθητές και δάσκαλοι προετοιμάζονται για μία ακόμα πρόκληση. Τον Μάρτη, όπως μας πληροφόρησε ο κ. Καρράς, οι μαθητές του σχολείου σε ένδειξη της στήριξής τους στην εκστρατεία «Μιλάμε Ελληνικά το Μάρτη», θα κάνουν αυτό ακριβώς και στο σπίτι τους.

Πληροφοριακά να αναφέρουμε, ότι το σχολείο άνοιξε για πρώτη φορά τις «πύλες» του το 2004 και τελεί υπό την καθοδήγηση του πατέρα Ρωμανού Στεργίου και των διοικητικών υπευθύνων James και Ανθούλας Νίδη, ενώ πολλοί ομογενείς της ευρύτερης περιοχής της Χρυσής Ακτής βοήθησαν και συνεχίζουν να βοηθούν για την άψογη λειτουργία του.

The council already has a series of plans for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

The 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete will be marked in 2016 in Victoria by a series of events planned by the Battle of Crete and Greece Commemorative Council.

The Council was formed recently in Melbourne and is an initiative of the indefatigable leadership of the Pancretan Association of Melbourne and the Cretan Brotherhood of Melbourne, under the guidance of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand.

Its purpose is to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete in Australia in such a way that will preserve and promote the shared history and the links between Australia, New Zealand and Greece, raise awareness of the importance of the Battle of Crete and to remember and honour the fallen and the remaining veterans.

The council has the support of a cross-section of the Greek Australian Communities, the Greek authorities in Australia, veterans’ associations, prominent politicians, researchers and authors and veterans’ descendants.

Some of the events planned include a photographic exhibition, a schools’ competition, lectures and seminars on the Greek involvement in World War II, the Greek campaign and the Battle of Crete, parades, olive tree plantations, plaque and memorial unveilings, commemorative services, wreath-laying ceremonies and book launches.

The Battle of Crete and Greece Commemorative Council welcomes the community’s involvement in the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete and beyond, and would like to hear from any interested parties, especially veterans’ descendants, youth organisations and readers in history with a special interest in military history, Cretan Greek history and WWII history.

THE Bogey Hole is without a confirmed re-opening date, while the NSW Department of Primary Industries waits for the results of a geotechnical engineering report it said would be delivered “soon”.

A department spokesperson said DPI Lands commissioned the report following Newcastle City Council’s concerns about the stability of the terrain above the convict-built swimming pool.

“The results of this report are expected soon and the department will advise the community shortly thereafter on any work required to make the Bogey Hole safe,” the spokesperson said. “Members of the public should respect the exclusion in place and stay away. Attempts to enter the site are highly irresponsible and a potential danger to the public.”
DPI Lands closed access to the landmark in December.
