Shadow minister Sophie Cotsis is almost certain to return to the Upper House as she will be holding the number one position in Labor’s ticket.

Voters in New South Wales will be heading to the polls on Saturday 28 March; however they are currently witnessing the most sluggish election the state has experienced in decades.

Political commentators have attributed this to the polls, which give the thumbs up for re-election to the Coalition under Premier Mike Baird.

On a two party preferred basis, the Liberals/Nationals are ahead with 54 per cent public support, against 46 per cent for the Labor Party. Labor leader Luke Foley took on the role just three months ago, struggling to become a recognisable face.

Mr Baird isn’t in a much better position, after he took over the role from predecessor Barry O’Farrell after he forgot to report that he received by donation a very expensive bottle of wine worth $3,000 to the public record. But, alternatively he is enjoying the larger share of the popularity – currently the highest of any other political leader in the country. But, if the polls are anything to go by, his government won’t be achieving the same majority they currently enjoy in the parliament.

The loss of seats for the government will be attributed to the corruption allegations against Liberal MPs, a topic that proved costly for the Labor Party four years ago.

It seems that the majority of voters disagree with the government’s commitment to sell off power poles and wires.

The Labor Party is hopeful it can recover a lot of lost ground after being booted out of government in 2011, which was its most severe defeat ever in the state.

The Greens expect to succeed in the Senate, with two MPs predicted to win seats. It’s a much closer battle in the Legislative Assembly, with a number of independents threatening their reach.

There are quite few parties seeking election, some of them campaigning with a hard line on specific issues. As to who will make it to the chamber, it all depends on the mathematical alchemies of the electoral system.

Commentators believe that the Upper House of NSW will mimic what’s been going in the federal Senate for the last 18 months.

The Greek Australian candidates

The Greek Australian community will lose veteran MP and former leader of the state’s National Party, George Souris, who is retiring from politics.

Shadow minister Sophie Cotsis is almost certain to return to the Upper House as she will be holding the number one position in Labor’s ticket.

Steve Kamper has high hopes to occupy the seat of Rockdale for the ALP.

He contested the seat in 2011, but was a victim of Labor’s backlash. It is expected that this time round he will cross the line.

Mr Kamper enjoys the support of federal leader Bill Shorten and if elected, is expected to have an influential role in the party.

In Wollongong, the well known unionist, Arthur Rorris, hopes to win the seat from Labor. As he recently told the Greek Program of SBS Radio, in 2011 Gordon Bradbery, who is now Wollongong’s mayor, ran as an independent and lost by approximately 600 votes.

Other candidates of Hellenic background include Eleni Petinos (Liberal for the seat of Miranda), Patrice Pandeleos (Liberal – Sydney), Nicholas Aroney (Liberal – Kogarah)John Koutsoukis (Liberal – Heffron), Nomiky Panayiotakis (Liberal – Canterbury), Georgia Constantinou (No Land Tax – Maroubra), Chris Stefandellis (No Land Tax – Campbelltown), Anna Stevis (No Land Tax – Castle Hill), George Capsis (Christian Democratic Party – Cronulla).

For the Upper House, apart from Ms Cotsis, Greek Australian candidates include Marika Kontellis (Greens), George Paxinos (Australian Cyclists Party) and Yvette Paxinos (Australian Cyclists Party).

Lastly, there are three candidates whose spouses are Greek Australians. Julie Passas is running for the seat of Summer Hill with the Liberal Party, Giovina Gouskos has put her name at Myall Lakes with the No Land Tax party, and Courtney Houssos is candidate for the Upper House with the ALP.

In a speech made this week in federal parliament, Perth MP Luke Simpkins accused successive Australian governments of taking a “biased” position in relation to the renaming of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and moreover, the Greek government – supported by Australia’s stance – of seeking “instability” in the Balkans.

Alluding to Australia’s long-held position on the FYROM naming issue, Mr Simpkins told the House of Representatives during an adjournment debate that “the failure of successive federal governments to call the Republic of Macedonia by its constitutional name” was because both sides of politics were fearful that a decision in favour of Skopje would “galvanise the Australian Greek community into a block vote against whoever makes this change.”

Mr Simpkins went on to suggest that Australia’s position “to stand with a very small group of nations [who] remain committed to the UN-sponsored process that aims to achieve a mutually accepted agreement over the name issue” was “a smokescreen that is good for hiding behind for a perceived domestic political advantage”.

While the Liberal MP’s support for Skopje’s position has been widely known and reported on in recent years, his latest appeal for the Abbott Government to alter its policy in regard to the naming issue was marked by offering his personal insights into Greek Australians.

“Australians of Greek heritage have bigger issues in their lives than [the naming issue] and they vote like any other Australians on issues that really affect them, such as the economy and opportunities for them and their families,” he said, before adding that there were “a handful of Australians of Greek heritage who do contact members of parliament” but that not enough Greek Australian voters would vote only according to the issue.

In a statement that is likely to enrage many in the Greek Australian community, Mr Simpkins said it was “tragic that literally a handful of nationalists can exert such power as to control the foreign policy of this nation.”

“Those of Greek heritage are pretty much like every other ethnic community…they are not locked into some false and paranoiac belief that Australia officially uttering the words ‘Republic of Macedonia’ will somehow lose territory of the Hellenic Republic. ”

Mr Simpkins said that following Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s reported declaration last year that Skopje’s request to the bilateral name change was “fair enough”, Australia should now “do the right thing and recognise the Republic of Macedonia by its constitutional name.”

The MP added that the Australian Government – by being “unwilling to seek progress” on the naming issue – was responsible for hurting FYROM’s economy.

Unsurprisingly, reaction to the Perth MP’s latest comments on the matter has been immediate and robust.

Professor Anastasios Tamis, President of the Australian Institute for Macedonian Studies, described Mr Simpkins’ statements as “superficial and provocative” and that the name issue “has nothing to do with politics and diplomatic recognitions; it is an anthropological and ethnographic one.”

“The Greeks as a nation – both within Greece and the five million of the Hellenic diaspora – will never compromise their historical and cultural rights as Macedonian Hellenes – hence the name of Macedonia will always remain well rooted within their history…” he told Neos Kosmos.

Professor Tamis added: “The entire population of 550,000 Australian Hellenes are committed devotees of the Macedonian Hellenic legacies, and will never compromise their patriotism to offer to another ethnicity – for unilateral usage, a name which is well-related to their national identity and attested with their history and culture over the last 3,000 years.”

“To claim that a small group of Greek ‘nationalists’ are only keen and sensitive on the issue of ‘Macedonia’ is absurd and fallacious”.

Τυλιγμένες μέσα σε μαύρες κάλτσες κάτω από το κάθισμα του αυτοκινήτου του είχε κρύψει 18 ράβδους χρυσού ένας άνδρας από τη Ρωσία.

Τον περσινό Οκτώβριο, ο Ρώσος βρήκε τυχαία κρυμμένες πίσω από θάμνους στην πόλη Ζέγια τις ράβδους μέσα στις κάλτσες.

Δεν παρέδωσε το πολύτιμο εύρημα στις αρχές αλλά προτίμησε να το κρατήσει και να το κρύψει κάτω από το κάθισμα του αυτοκινήτου του.

Η αστυνομία, ωστόσο, ανακάλυψε τελικά τον… κρυμμένο θησαυρό και στις 17 Μαρτίου ρωσικό περιφερειακό δικαστήριο τον καταδίκασε σε φυλάκιση δύο ετών με αναστολή για «παράνομη κατοχή πολύτιμου μετάλλου».

Ο χρυσός τελικά παραδόθηκε στο κράτος.

Κάπως έτσι φαίνεται να γίνεται η «δουλειά» στην Ινδία

Σε 1.000 συλλήψεις προχώρησε η αστυνομία της Ινδίας μετά τη δημοσίευση φωτογραφιών στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης και την προβολή πλάνων στην τηλεόραση που έδειχναν γονείς, συγγενείς και φίλους μαθητών να σκαρφαλώνουν στους τοίχους σχολικού συγκροτήματος, την ώρα που διεξάγονταν εξετάσεις, για να δώσουν χαρτιά με απαντήσεις στους εξεταζόμενους.

Οι περισσότεροι συλληφθέντες είναι γονείς και συγγενείς μαθητών, οι οποίοι κρατώντας το κινητό τους τηλέφωνο στο χέρι, είχαν αναρριχηθεί στο τετραώροφο σχολικό κτίριο στο κρατίδιο Μπιχάρ.

Οι συλληφθέντες τέθηκαν υπό προσωρινή κράτηση και θα πρέπει να καταβάλουν 30 ευρώ τουλάχιστον για να αποφυλακιστούν, όπως δήλωσε ο ανώτερος αξιωματούχος της αστυνομίας του Μπιχάρ Γκουπτεσβάρ Πάντεϊ.

Σε άλλες, μάλιστα, φωτογραφίες διακρίνονται μέλη του προσωπικού του σχολείου καθώς και αστυνομικοί, οι οποίοι παρακολουθούν αμέτοχοι τη σκηνή, αλλά και αστυνομικοί να δωροδοκούνται για να κάνουν τα στραβά μάτια.

Τουλάχιστον 750 μαθητές έχουν αποβληθεί, σύμφωνα με το BBC.

Μόνο στο Μπιχάρ περίπου 1,4 εκατομμύρια μαθητές δίνουν αυτή την περίοδο εξετάσεις για να πάρουν το απολυτήριο Λυκείου.

Two goals from Juan Mata helped Manchester United take a huge step towards UEFA Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield.

The Spaniard struck in each half, his second goal a spectacular shot, as Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the league this year was ended.

Liverpool’s cause was not helped by having to play almost all the second half with 10 men after Steven Gerrard was sent off just 38 seconds into what will likely be his final Liverpool appearance against United. The Anfield captain was left on the bench by Brendan Rodgers before being brought on at half-time, only to be dismissed by referee Martin Atkinson less than a minute after his introduction.

Having contested a full-blooded 50-50 challenge with Ander Herrera, Gerrard saw red for stamping on the leg of the Spaniard, meaning he will serve a three-match ban that will leave him with just five more Barclays Premier League matches in a Liverpool shirt ahead of his move to LA Galaxy.

Herrera had set up Mata for the opening goal with a superb pass as United suffocated a Liverpool side who had not lost a league match since their 3-0 reverse at Old Trafford in December.

The visitors’ task was made easier in the second half thanks to Gerrard’s red card, with Mata subsequently doubling United’s advantage with a goal worthy of being a winner. He found the net with an acrobatic scissor-kick, and Van Gaal’s side were on their way to a five-point gap over Liverpool in the race for fourth.

Daniel Sturridge netted a consolation with Liverpool’s first shot on target with 21 minutes left, but the hosts never looked like mounting a comeback and had Simon Mignolet not saved a stoppage-time penalty from Wayne Rooney, United would have won more convincingly.

After a cagey start, a moment of brilliance from United broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, as Mata silenced the home fans with a goal on front of The Kop. The Spaniard timed his run down the right to perfection to meet a superb through-ball from Herrera and coolly slotted his shot across the face of goal into the bottom-left corner.

Liverpool struggled in midfield, as Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson found it difficult to retain possession. But for all their dominance, United failed to create any further clear-cut first-half opportunities and could have been punished by Adam Lallana in the 35th minute.

The England midfielder was teed up by Sturridge in the centre of the area but he could only turn his shot narrowly wide of David de Gea’s right post.

Gerrard was thrown into the fray in place of Lallana at the break, but was soon making his way off the field in ignominy. He appeared to win the ball in the initial challenge with Herrera, but then stamped on the United man’s leg, leaving Atkinson with little choice but to show a red card.

Liverpool’s task grew harder when Mata finished well from Angel Di Maria’s lofted pass after 59 minutes.

The hosts did rally, and they pulled one back in the 69th minute when De Gea was beaten by Sturridge’s shot from Philippe Coutinho’s pass at his near post.

There was to be no grandstand finish, though, with Rooney denied from the spot by a fine Mignolet stop to his right after Emre Can had brought down Daley Blind.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: “I was disappointed with the first half, our start position was way too deep. They were excellent and deserved their lead. But the players showed incredible bravery in the second half and showed character.

“Without playing great, we still had a good chance. We needed some luck but it wasn’t to be. We will get a reaction after this and finish the season strongly.”

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “We played very well in the first half. Maybe as good as against Spurs [a 3-0 victory] but in second we didn’t play very well.

“Like always, when you play against 10 you forget to press. We had unnecessary ball losses and we brought Liverpool into the game. Most of the players were thinking, ‘Maybe [someone else] can do it.’

“We kept the ball and created a lot of possibilities, not big chances, but a lot of possibilities to score. I said whoever could beat the pressure shall win.”

Η Λεάντρα Μπερέσαν

Βίωσε τη μεξικανική επανάσταση και, όπως έλεγε, γνώρισε τον θρυλικό Πάντσο Βίγια. Πρόκειται για την Λεάντρα Μπερέσαν, που πέθανε σε ηλικία 127 ετών και η οποία δεν ήταν καταγεγραμμένη στις λίστες των πιο ηλικιωμένων ανθρώπων στον κόσμο επειδή δεν είχε επίσημα έγγραφα.

Η Μπερέσα απέκτησε πέντε παιδιά, που έχουν πεθάνει, και 161 απογόνους.

Γεννήθηκε στα βόρεια σύνορα της πολιτείας Ταμαουλίπας, στις 31 Αυγούστου του 1887, και πέθανε το πρωί της περασμένης Πέμπτης στο σπίτι της στην πόλη Ζάποπαν της πολιτείας Γιαλίσκο.

Ο εγγονός της, ένας 70χρονος άντρας, είπε ότι απλά σταμάτησε να αναπνέει, καθώς τους τελευταίους μήνες αντιμετώπιζε προβλήματα στους πνεύμονες.

Ο ίδιος είπε ότι η γιαγιά του συνήθιζε να λέει ιστορίες για την επανάσταση, η οποία ξεκίνησε το 1910, αλλά και για τη γνωριμία της με τον θρυλικό στρατηγό Πάντσο Βίγια.

Μικρά παιδιά που έχουν προσβληθεί από τη “νόσο του ύπνου”, η οποία πλήττει από πέρσι το απομακρυσμένο χωριό Καλάτσι στο Καζακστάν

Αυξημένα επίπεδα ακτινοβολίας, βαρέα μέταλλα στο νερό ή κάτι άλλο, πιο… μυστηριώδες, ευθύνεται για την κατάσταση στην οποία έχουν ήδη περιπέσει 152 από τους συνολικά 600 κατοίκους του χωριού Καλάτσι στο βόρειο Καζακστάν;

Η ασθένεια που έχει ενσκήψει στο Καλάτσι έχει ονομαστεί, επιστημονική αδεία, «νόσος του ύπνου» και είναι μια πάθηση κατά την οποία ένας άνθρωπος αισθάνεται εξάντληση, μετά πέφτει για ύπνο και μπορεί να μείνει ναρκωμένος για πολλά μερόνυχτα –υπάρχουν καταγεγραμμένες περιπτώσεις κατοίκων που ξύπνησαν μετά από μια ολόκληρη εβδομάδα ύπνου.

Επίσης, όταν ξυπνάνε, πολλοί κάτοικοι έχουν μερική απώλεια μνήμης.

Παράδειγμα, ο Βίκτορ Καζατσένκο, ο οποίος μάλιστα είναι… ειδική περίπτωση, καθώς έπεσε για ύπνο ξαφνικά, ενώ οδηγούσε (!) τη μοτοσικλέτα του -από θαύμα δεν τραυματίστηκε σοβαρά ο ίδιος και η συνεπιβάτης σύζυγός του.

«Ο εγκέφαλός μου σταμάτησε να λειτουργεί. Αυτό ήταν. Δεν θυμάμαι τίποτα», λέει στην εφημερίδα Guardian ο Καζάκος που έπεσε σε νάρκη στις 28 Αυγούστου και ξύπνησε στο νοσοκομείο μετά από τέσσερα μερόνυχτα, στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου!

Αφού ξύπνησε, κατόπιν για αρκετά μεγάλο διάστημα ο Καζατσένκο είχε προβλήματα, όπως ισχυρούς πονοκεφάλους κι υψηλή αρτηριακή πίεση.

Η πάθηση αυτή ξεκίνησε να πλήττει τους κατοίκους μέσα στο 2013. Αρχικά, από τη «νόσο» είχε χτυπηθεί το 10% των κατοίκων. Πέρσι το καλοκαίρι, άλλοι 60 κάτοικοι πήγαν στο τοπικό νοσοκομείο με παρόμοια συμπτώματα εξάντλησης. Πολλοί μιλούσαν για μια κατάσταση κατά την οποία ο ανθρώπινος οργανισμός αποφασίζει έτσι ξαφνικά να… κατεβάσει το ρελιέ. Άλλοι έκαναν λόγο για αμνησία και παραισθήσεις.

Τα δύο τελευταία περιστατικά καταγράφηκαν στις αρχές Μαρτίου και πλέον ο αριθμός πολιτών που έχουν επηρεαστεί έχει φτάσει τους 152, δηλαδή ένας στους τέσσερις, ενώ αρκετοί κάτοικοι της περιοχής, όπως ο Καζατσένκο, έχουν βιώσει την ίδια κατάσταση περισσότερες από δύο φορές.

Οι γιατροί που εξέτασαν τους ασθενείς διέγνωσαν συμπτώματα εγκεφαλοπάθειας, και συγκέντρωσης υγρού στον εγκέφαλο, χωρίς ωστόσο να μπορούν να βρουν την αιτία της εγκεφαλοπάθειας.

Μέχρι τα τέλη του 2014 είχαν διενεργηθεί περισσότεροι από 20.000 εργαστηριακοί και κλινικοί έλεγχοι στον αέρα, το έδαφος, το νερό, τα τρόφιμα, τα ζώα, τα οικοδομικά υλικά και στους ίδιους τους κατοίκους.

Έγιναν ενδελεχή τεστ προκειμένου να διερευνηθεί αν στην περιοχή υπάρχουν αυξημένα επίπεδα ακτινοβολίας, μονοξειδίου του άνθρακα, ραδόνιο και άλλες τοξικές ουσίες ή βαρέα μέταλλα που θα μπορούσαν να έχουν σχέση με τη «νόσο». Αποφάνθηκαν όμως πως η ακτινοβολία είναι εντός των επιτρεπτών ορίων.

Οι ίδιοι οι κάτοικοι πιστεύουν πως έχουν βρει την αιτία της μυστηριώδους νόσου: το εγκαταλελειμμένο ορυχείο ουράνιου Κρασνογκόρσκι το οποίο βρίσκεται δίπλα στο χωριό, ένας χώρος που εγκαταλείφθηκε σταδιακά από το 1990.

Ωστόσο, κι εδώ οι επιστήμονες σηκώνουν τα χέρια ψηλά, καθώς στην περιοχή γύρω από το ορυχείο, όπου ζουν μερικές δεκάδες οικογένειες, κανένα από τα μέλη αυτών των οικογενειών δεν έχει πληγεί από την «νόσο του ύπνου».

Οι έρευνες συνεχίζονται αφού μέχρι στιγμής δεν υπάρχουν σαφή αποτελέσματα και οι επιστήμονες  αποφάνθηκαν… αδυναμία να βγάλουν μια διάγνωση, με την κυβέρνηση του Καζακστάν να έχει απευθυνθεί στη διεθνή ιατρική κοινότητα για βοήθεια.

The lawyers representing some of the families of MH17 victims say there will be a meeting later this week about Malaysia Airlines’ compliance with an international treaty on compensation.

International aviation lawyer Jerry Skinner is representing a dozen victims of MH17 from Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand.

Mr Skinner said one of his Sydney clients, Tim Lauschet, has been asked to provide financial information about his mother, one of the 298 people killed when the airliner was downed over Ukraine last year.

He said Mr Lauschet — who lost his mother Gabriele Lauschet in the plane crash — had been asked for inappropriate financial documents at this stage of compensation negotiations and payments.

Mr Skinner said initial compensation payments made to families should not be means tested, in line with the Montreal Convention which governs airline liability globally.

“I’m not sure what the next step my clients are going to take is,” Mr Skinner said.

“We the attorneys for that group are having a conference this week and it may be we try and approach Malaysia Airlines and discuss it with them and it may be that we take legal action to try and compel them to comply with the treaty.”

Mr Skinner said means testing at this stage was unfair.

“There may be cases on board the plane where means testing would determine that they’re not even worth the $50,000 that was paid as an advance payment not to mention the $180,000 which is intended as a strict liability payment.”

Malaysia Airlines has been asked for comment.
