Nigel Farage has been heckled in the European Parliament after telling its members they were “in denial”, and predicting Britain would not be the last country to leave the EU.

He said Britain’s vote to leave the EU had been “remarkable” and “seismic”, “not just for British politics, for European politics, but perhaps for global politics too”.

“What the little people did, what the ordinary people did, what the people who have been oppressed over the last few years and seen their living standards go down … they rejected big politics, and they said ‘actually, we want our country back’.

“I make one prediction this morning: The United Kingdom will not be the last member state to leave the European Union.

The UK Independence Party leader, who was a key supporter of the Leave campaign, was booed as he told Parliament: “I know virtually none of you have ever done a proper job in your lives or worked, worked in a business or worked in a trade.”

Earlier, European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker asked the UKIP leader why he had attended the session.

The UKIP representatives had applauded after Mr Juncker had told Parliament: “We must respect British democracy and the way it has expressed its view.”

“That’s the last time you are applauding here … and to some extent I’m really surprised you are here. You are fighting for the exit. The British people voted in favour of the exit. Why are you here?” Juncker said, breaking from his speech text.

Juncker said he would make no apology for being “sad” at the result of the British vote. “I am not a robot,” he said, “I am not a grey bureaucrat.”

He urged Britain to explain quickly what it wanted from the EU in terms of a new relationship but insisted he had told his staff to engage in no preliminary talks with British officials until London engages the two-year mechanism for leaving the EU.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Britain the union would not tolerate “cherry-picking” in upcoming negotiations on their future relations.

“The EU is strong enough to withstand Britain’s withdrawal,” she told Parliament ahead of a crisis summit of the 28 member states in Brussels.

“It is also strong enough to successfully defend its interests in the world in future.”

She expressed her regret that Britain had voted in a referendum last week to quit the bloc, but underlined that it would not be able to dictate the terms of its ties to the EU.

“We will ensure there are no negotiations based on the principle of cherry-picking,” she said to applause.

“There must be and will be a noticeable difference between whether a country wants to be a member of the European Union family or not.

“Anyone wishing to leave this family cannot expect to lose all the obligations but keep the privileges.”

Ms Merkel also said access to Europe’s common market depends on “accepting Europe’s fundamental freedoms and the other rules and commitments that go with it”.

“This applies to Britain as it does to everyone else,” she said.

A non-EU country can join the common market if its accepts the freedoms of people, goods, services and capital, she added, mentioning the example of Norway.

Three in four Greek university graduates have left the country in the past six years in search of better job prospects abroad, and most intend to settle down in their new place of residence for good, a new study looking at past and present trends has found.

The path of migration has never been easy, though, and many educated Greeks may spend several months in a foreign country without a job, relying on support from their parents back home, a trend that was even more marked before the start of the crisis in 2010. Moreover, the profile of the migrating Greek has also changed dramatically today compared to the massive migration waves in the first two decades after World War II.

According to a recent study conducted by the University of Macedonia and supervised by Lois Labrianidis, a professor of economic geography and Greece’s general secretary of strategic and private investment, of the 185,388 Greek university graduates who departed the country from 1990 to 2015, 139,041 have left since 2010. Also, up until the late 1980s, the majority of migrants left only with their middle school diploma, while in the 1990s most had a high school diploma, and from the start of 2000 to the present, almost 75 percent had at least one university or technical college degree.

The study, which was funded by the London School of Economics, found that in the 2010-15 period, wealthy Greeks constituted 9 percent of the total number who migrated abroad, even though this category of household made up just 2 percent of the sample surveyed. Migration, experts stress, is an expensive process that requires funds. However, the decline in incomes and the rise in unemployment over the past few years has led to a spike in migration by low-income Greeks, who constitute 28 percent of outflows since 2010.

Moreover, while the unemployed made up only a small percentage of outflows before 2010, this has now shot up to 50 percent.

The majority of emigres find a new job relatively quickly abroad, the study found, with 81 percent securing employment within the first six months of moving. One in five, however, were unable to find work and either returned to Greece or stayed in the hope that something would come up.

For 72 percent of Greeks who moved abroad, their new jobs were based on their academic qualifications, while 21 percent have found work in unrelated fields.

The study also found that while the most popular countries for Greeks looking for work abroad in the post-WWII years were Germany, Australia and the US, today they are willing to try their luck further afield, moving to the Middle East and Asia, though European Union countries are the most popular choice.

Up until 2009, the majority of emigres were 30 years old or under and did not have any dependents, meaning it was easier for them to make the move. In the 1970s, in fact, this category represented 95 percent of the total. Since 2000, though, there has been a steady increase in the number of Greeks aged up to 30 leaving the country, making up 46 percent of total departures in 2010-15.

The Greek state pays an average of 95,000 euros for every student who graduates from the Athens School of Medicine, making it the most expensive degree among Greek universities. The cost of studies at the National Technical University of Athens, meanwhile, comes to above 50,000 euros. Moreover, in the 2010-15 period, the number of emigres with costly university degrees shot up compared to the 1960-2009 period, yet just 13.7 percent of the country’s work force is made up of university or college graduates.

“Greece cannot possibly compete with countries with low production costs or with those with a high specialization in technology,” Labrianidis notes. “Therefore, there is a high rate of unemployment among specialized people, particularly scientists, who go on to leave the country. The country’s production model has reached it limits.”

The expert says that much of the present situation can be attributed to structural characteristics of the economy, such as the small size of businesses, the absence of synergies between companies, poor performance in innovation and low exports.

“It will take bold steps and daring decisions to allow the country to produce more complex products and services so it can hold a better spot in the international division of labor,” Labrianidis says. “A growth strategy is set to be completed soon, which will outline the prevalent situation and mainly propose development strategies to help Greece exit the crisis.”

Labrianidis says that the emphasis of the new strategy that will be presented to the government will be a departure from the model of high-intensity, low-innovation sectors and a greater focus on exports.

The study made some more interesting findings, such as the fact that in the 2010-13 period, of the total of 454,177 who left Greece, 223,885 were Greeks and the remaining 230,232 were migrants in Greece. Foreigners, in fact, started the outgoing trend, as in 2010, of the 119,985 people who left, 76,663 were foreign nationals, the majority Albanian.

In the 1960s, moreover, 67 percent of Greeks who had emigrated worked to send money to help their families back home. Today, just 18 percent of Greeks working abroad can afford to send money to their families in Greece.

The match has been scheduled to take place in July, the same month Victory take on Italian Series A champions Juventus

Melbourne Victory has been confirmed to play Spanish giants Atlético de Madrid at Geelong’s Simonds Stadium on Sunday 31 July.

Atlético de Madrid will be in Australia competing in the International Champions Cup Australia, presented by Audi against Tottenham Hotspur, and will play Victory as part of an extended pre-season tour Down Under.

Victory is scheduled to take on Italian Series A champions Juventus in the ICC tournament at the MCG on Saturday 23 July.

The announcement is a major win for football fans in regional Victoria, following the success of Victory’s Hyundai A-League home-and-away matches in Geelong in the last two seasons.

The club is also scheduled to play Newcastle Jets at Simonds Stadium in Round 8 of the 2016/17 campaign.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best club sides in the world,” said Victory CEO Ian Robson.

“We’re thrilled to play this game against Atlético de Madrid in Geelong, a region we’ve had a close association with, particularly over the last few seasons. The people of Geelong have been magnificent in their support of Victory, and we look forward to that continuing.
“We encourage all of our fans to support us in our matches against Juventus and Atlético de Madrid, in what is a rare opportunity to witness some of the world’s best players in Australia,” he added.

The tour match will be the second time Simonds Stadium has featured an international fixture after Victory hosted an AFC Champions League qualifying play-off against Thailand club Muangthong United in 2014.

“Atlético de Madrid is one of world football’s most powerful clubs. It was only weeks ago Atlético was battling out the UEFA Champions League final in Milan, and now Geelong beckons,” said the Hon John Eren MP, Minister for Tourism and Major Events; Sport and Veterans.

“These aren’t just great spectacles, they’re a big boost to the local economy and a rare chance to see the world’s very best in our own backyard.”

Atlético de Madrid, the 2013/14 La Liga champions, recently overcame the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona to reach the UEFA Champions League final for the second time in three years.

This followed an impressive La Liga campaign where the club finished third behind Barcelona in one of the strongest competitions in world football.

Melbourne University’s Dr Petronella Nel will present a lecture on ‘Ancient Cypriot Pottery – Analysis and Preservation’

Melbourne’s University’s Dr Petronella Nel will be presenting a lecture on ‘Ancient Cypriot Pottery – Analysis and Preservation’ this week as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Greek History and Culture Seminars.

Set to take place at the Greek Centre on Thursday 23 June, the presentation will explore a Cypriot pottery collection excavated in the early 20th century.

Since its discovery, it has been used in exhibitions and as a reference in training archaeology students and archaeological research.

More recently however, the collection has found a new role in the field of cultural materials conservation, given that many of the reconstructed vessels feature old repairs, which are now failing, making vessels difficult to store or handle, and unavailable for exhibition.

Since the advent of the masters program in cultural materials conservation in 2004 at the University of Melbourne’s Grimwade Centre for Cultural Material Conservation (GCCMC), the collection has been used to train conservation students.

The lecture will also reflect on the collection’s role in an ARC funded project, which illustrated how use of the collection has evolved over time, and how conserving objects complements research into adhesive testing, potentially altering the types of adhesives used on archaeological pottery.

Given her role as a lecturer, researcher and objects conservator at the GCCMC, Dr Nel’s presentation will give greater insight into the Cypriot collection and its continued benefits in the modern world.

The lecture will take place on Thursday 23 June at the Greek Centre, Level 3, 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, VIC at 7:00 pm. Attendance is free of charge.

Ένα δεύτερο χάλκινο δόρυ με την αιχμή, σε συνέχεια του πρώτου που εντοπίστηκε το 2014, τέσσερα θραύσματα μαρμάρινων αγαλμάτων, η απόληξη ενός ποδιού από ξύλινο έπιπλο με χάλκινη επένδυση, θραύσματα από γυάλινα αγγεία και άλλα από φυσητό γυαλί τύπου millefiori, αμφορείς, μία λάγυνος, μία οινοχόη και ένα χρυσό δακτυλίδι είναι μερικά από τα περίπου 60 ευρήματα που ήλθαν στην επιφάνεια στη διάρκεια της ερευνητικής αποστολής στο Ναυάγιο των Αντικυθήρων.

Επίσης, προέκυψαν ευρήματα που δείχνουν την ύπαρξη και δεύτερου πλοίου. Πρόκειται για ένα μολύβδινο σωλήνα διαφορετικού διαμετρήματος, καθώς και διαφορετικού τύπου καρφιών, κεράμων αλλά και διαφορετικών τύπων αμφορέων και λαγυνών.

Η έρευνα διεξήχθη από τις 22 Μαΐου ώς τις 11 Ιουνίου, από την επιστημονική ομάδα της Εφορείας Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων και του αμερικάνικου Ωκεανογραφικού Ινστιτούτου Woods Hole.

Σε πρώτη φάση συνεχίστηκε η συστηματική ανασκαφή, η οποία ξεκίνησε το περασμένο φθινόπωρο. Παράλληλα διενεργήθηκαν δοκιμαστικές τομές σε διάφορα σημεία, σε μια προσπάθεια να εντοπιστούν τα όρια του χώρου, όπου βρισκόταν η κύρια συγκέντρωση του φορτίου και πιθανόν λείψανα του ίδιου του πλοίου.

Η μεγάλη διασπορά της κεραμικής, το μεγάλο βάθος καθώς και η διατάραξη, που έχει επιφέρει η ανέλκυσή του 1900 και η ανασκαφή του 1976, κάνουν το έργο αυτό δύσκολο. Εν τούτοις, με τη δυνατότητα της ακριβούς τοποθέτησης κάθε πληροφορίας στον εξαιρετικά λεπτομερή ψηφιακό χάρτη του χώρου (GIS), η κατανόηση των ορίων του ναυαγίου γίνεται όλο και καλύτερη. Σε αυτό συμβάλλει και η μηχανική ανίχνευση στοιχείων κάτω από την επιφάνεια του πυθμένα, τα οποία δίνουν την εικόνα της διασποράς του κεραμικού φορτίου, αλλά και των μεταλλικών στοιχείων του ίδιου του πλοίου, όπως καρφιά, σκωρίες σιδήρου, τμήματα της επιμολύβδωσης, κ.ά.

Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν τα στοιχεία του ίδιου του πλοίου, όπως καρφιά διαφόρων τύπων, μάζα ρητίνης, φύλλα από την επιμολύβδωση του σκάφους, τυλιγμένα ή διπλωμένα μολύβδινα ελάσματα, ένας μολύβδινος σωλήνας, πιθανόν από την αντλία υδάτων (σεντίνες) του πλοίου και ένα μολύβδινο βάρος (αντίβαρο;) 100 περίπου κιλών. Στην ίδια κατηγορία ανήκουν πιθανότατα και οι μάζες από σκωρίες σιδήρου, οι οποίες διατηρούν στο εσωτερικό τους το σχήμα του αντικειμένου.

Η έρευνα, η οποία τελεί υπό την αιγίδα του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας Προκόπη Παυλόπουλου, διενεργήθηκε υπό τη διεύθυνση της προϊσταμένης της Εφορείας Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων Δρ. Α.Σίμωσι.

Ten members of our community honoured in the Queen’s Birthday awards

Last weekend’s Queen’s Birthday Honours saw ten Greek Australians acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the community.

More than 100 Australians received honours in recognition of their achievements and service to others, among them, ten members of the Greek Australian community who made a difference, achieving their best.

Three were awarded the AM title, which stands for ‘Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia’:
Professor Vicki Bitsika Coolangatta, QLD.
For significant service to tertiary education in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders, as an academic, and as a supporter of people with disabilities.

Associate Professor Vicki Kotsirilos, VIC.
For significant service to integrative medicine, to health practitioner standards and regulation, to medical education, and to the environment.

The Honourable George Souris Singleton, NSW.
For significant service to the people and Parliament of New South Wales, and to the community of the Upper Hunter.

Six Medals (OAM) of the Order of Australin in the General Division went to:
Mrs Catherine Alexopoulos Glen Iris, VIC.
For service to the Greek community of Melbourne.

Giannis Maniatis scored a sensational goal from inside his own half to light up a scrappy game as Greece defeated Australia 2-1 in Melbourne on Tuesday.

The Socceroos beat their European opponents 1-0 in the first game of a two-match series, Mathew Leckie netting the winner in stoppage-time at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on Saturday.

But Michael Skibbe’s visitors gained revenge at Etihad Stadium, where Petros Mantalos opened the scoring.

An ill-tempered match will be remembered for Maniatis’s 20th-minute goal, the midfielder having embarrassed Australia goalkeeper Adam Federici with a goal worthy of the likes of David Beckham and Xabi Alonso.

The hosts, coached by Greek-born Ange Postecoglou, got one back though Trent Sainsbury after a goalmouth scramble just before the hour mark, but they proved unable to claim an equaliser in an unusually incoherent display from the reigning Asian champions.

Greece started strongly and deservedly took the lead in the eighth minute.

Apostolos Vellios stole possession from Mark Milligan and found Andreas Samaris, who slid in Mantalos. The midfielder advanced into the area unopposed and dispatched a simple finish past Federici.

The visitors doubled their lead in spectacular fashion 12 minutes later. Maniatis, picking up possession inside his own half, spotted Federici off his line and dispatched a perfectly-weighted lob over the stranded AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper to score a remarkable long-range goal.

The Socceroos could muster little in response, threatening only sporadically and rarely calling Greece goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino into action.

Australia began the second half with more purpose, but Greece were inches away from making it 3-0 in the 56th minute as captain Vasilis Torosidis smashed a hooked attempt from a corner against the upright.

Two minutes later the disjointed hosts finally hit the back of the net, when Aaron Mooy swung in a corner that was met by the head of Tim Cahill. Milligan steered a header of his own from Cahill’s attempt on to the crossbar, before Sainsbury nodded the rebound into an unguarded net.

A slew of substitutions typical of non-competitive internationals slowed the tempo as the match wore on, with neither side creating an opening of note in the closing exchanges.

Greece begin their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign at home to Cyprus in October, while Australia kick-off the fourth round of AFC qualifying against Iraq on 31 August.

Θερμή υποδοχή της Εθνικής στην Ελληνική Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης

Θερμή υποδοχή επεφύλαξε χθες η Μελβούρνη στα μέλη της Εθνικής Ελλάδος Ποδοσφαίρου σε ειδική εκδήλωση που διοργανώθηκε από την Κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας σε συνεργασία με την Ελληνική Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης, στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο.  

Εκατοντάδες άτομα κατέκλυσαν την αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων του Ελληνικού Κέντρου για να καλωσορίσουν τα μέλη της Ελληνική αντιπροσωπείας ενόψει του σημερινού φιλικού αγώνα με την Εθνική Αυστραλίας στο στάδιο «Ετιχαντ».

Παρόντες οι υπουργοί Αθλητισμού και Πολυπολιτισμού της Βικτώριας κ.κ. Τζον Εριν και Ρόμπιν Σκοτ, οι πολιτειακοί υπουργοί κα Τζένη Μικάκου και κ. Φίλιπ Δασκαλίδης, ο πρόεδρος της Γερουσίας της Βικτώριας κ. Μπρους Ατκινσον, ο πρόεδρος της Βουλής της Βικτώριας κ. Τέλμο Λάνγκουιλερ, η ομοσπονδιακή βουλευτής κ. Μαρία Βαμβακινού, η Γενική Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στη Μελβούρνη κα Χριστίνα Σημαντηράκη, η πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Πολυπολιτισμικών Υποθέσεων Βικτώριας κ. Ελένη Καπάλου, ο πρόεδρος της Ποδοσφαιρικής Ομοσπονδίας Βικτώριας κ. Κίμων Ταλιαδόρος, επιχειρηματίες, πλήθος παροικιακών παραγόντων, ευεργέτες και μέλη της Κοινότητας, καθώς και πολλά Ελληνόπουλα.

Οι ομιλητές καλωσόρισαν τα μέλη της ελληνικής αντιπροσωπείας, εξήραν τη συμβολή των Ελλήνων στη Βικτώρια και την Αυστραλία και εξέφρασαν τη βεβαιότητα ότι σύσσωμος ο ποδοσφαιρόφιλος κόσμος της Μελβούρνης θα βρίσκεται αύριο βράδυ στο «Etihand» για να παρακολουθήσει «έναν μεγάλο αγώνα».

Τα μέλη της ελληνικής αντιπροσωπείας, τους επισήμους και όλους τους παρευρισκόμενους καλωσόρισε ο πρόεδρος της Κοινότητας κ. Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης, λέγοντας πως η  Μελβούρνη είναι λογικά η πιο ιδανική πόλη για να γίνει ο αυριανός αγώνας, διότι είναι η αθλητική και πολυπολιτισμική πρωτεύουσα της Αυστραλίας στην οποία ζουν πάνω 300.000 Έλληνες.

Υπογράμμισε επίσης τις στενές σχέσεις της Αυστραλίας με την Ελλάδα, όχι μόνο λόγω της μετανάστευσης εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων Ελλήνων, αλλά και για το γεγονός ότι ήταν σύμμαχοι στον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. 

Ο κ. Παπαστεργιάδης τόνισε ότι η παρουσία του ελληνικού στοιχείου στα ποδοσφαιρικά δρώμενα της Αυστραλίας ήταν πάντα έντονη, καθώς οι Έλληνες δημιούργησαν ορισμένες από τις μεγάλες ομάδες ποδοσφαίρου, όπως την Ελλάς Μελβούρνης και τον Αλέξανδρο.  Επισήμανε επίσης και ορισμένα χαρακτηριστικά στοιχεία αυτής της παρουσίας αναφερόμενος στην Εθνική Ποδοσφαίρου Αυστραλίας:

– Ο προπονητής της Εθνικής Αυστραλίας Άγγελος Ποστέκογλου έχει γεννηθεί στην Ελλάδα.

– Πάνω από 15 παίκτες Ελληνικής καταγωγής έχουν παίξει με τους Σοκερούς, ενώ στη σήμερα στην Εθνική Αυστραλίας συμμετέχουν τρεις Ελληνοαυστραλοί.

– Πολλές ομάδες του NSL δημιουργήθηκαν από Ελληνοαυστραλούς, για παράδειγμα η Ελλάς Μελβούρνης και ο Αλέξανδρος.

«Μπορεί αύριο ως Ελληνο-Αυστραλοί να έχουμε κρίση ταυτότητας για το ποια ομάδα θα υποστηρίξουμε.  Είμαι όμως σίγουρος ότι ο νικητής από αυτό τον αγώνα θα είναι οι σχέσεις των δύο χωρών και το ποδόσφαιρο.»

Στη συνέχεια απηύθυνε χαιρετισμό ο υπουργός Πολυπολιτισμού της Βικτώριας κ. Ρόμπιν Σκοτ, ο οποίος χαρακτήρισε την Κοινότητα ως «κέντρο του πολυπολιτισμού», επισημαίνοντας ταυτόχρονα τη στενή συνεργασία της Κυβέρνησης με την Ελληνική Κοινότητα. Εξέφρασε δε την πεποίθηση ότι από τον σημερινό αγώνα θα είναι κερδισμένη η Βικτώρια, ιδιαίτερα «λόγω των καλών σχέσεων που έχουμε με τους Ελληνες» που ήρθαν στην Αυστραλία και συνέβαλαν τα μέγιστα στη Βικτώρια. 

«Ο αυριανός αγώνας είναι μια γιορτή για τη συμβολή αυτή, για το πόσο καλή κοινωνία είμαστε. Η κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας είναι χαρούμενη να βοηθήσει σε αυτή την προσπάθεια,» είπε.

Από την πλευρά του ο υπουργός Αθλητισμού της Βικτώριας καλωσόρισε τα μέλη της ελληνικής αντιπροσωπείας λέγοντας ότι αισθάνεται υπερήφανος που ως υπουργός παρευρίσκεται στην εκδήλωση, ενώ τόνισε πως η Μελβούρνη χρειάζεται τη διοργάνωση κορυφαίων αθλητικών εκδηλώσεων, ιδιαίτερα τώρα που έχει ανακηρυχθεί παγκόσμια πρωτεύουσα αθλητισμού.

«Αγαπούμε όλους τους Έλληνες της Μελβούρνης και για την προσφορά τους σε όλους τους τομείς,» είπε, σημειώνοντας ότι ως υπουργός Τουρισμού επιδιώκει την περεταίρω σύσφιξη των σχέσεων με την Ελλάδα.

«Είμαστε πολλοί υπερήφανοι με τους Έλληνες που έχουμε εδώ στην πόλη μας και με όλους αυτούς τους αγώνες ενισχύεται η οικονομία μας. Είμαι βέβαιος ότι αύριο θα είναι μια μεγάλη μέρα όχι μόνο με τον αγώνα, αλλά και με τις άλλες εκδηλώσεις που διοργανώνουμε έξω από το γήπεδο». 

Από την πλευρά της η Γενική Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας κ. Χριστίνα Σημαντηράκη δήλωσε ότι όλος ο Ελληνισμός της Μελβούρνης είναι ενθουσιασμένος από την παρουσία της Εθνικής ομάδας μας και ευχαρίστησε την Κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας που ενίσχυσε την προσπάθεια αυτή και την Κοινότητα που φρόντισε για τη διοργάνωσή της εκδήλωσης.

Απευθυνόμενη στην ελληνική αντιπροσωπεία τόνισε:  «Να σας πω ότι θα είμαστε όλοι στο γήπεδο αύριο, θα φωνάζουμε όλοι μαζί και να σας ευχηθώ καλή επιτυχία και με τη νίκη».

Ο πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Ποδοσφαιρικής Ομοσπονδίας κ. Γιώργος Γκιρτζίκης ευχαρίστησε την κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας και τους πολιτειακούς υπουργούς που παρευρίσκονταν στην εκδήλωση, καθώς και την Ελληνική Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης και τον πρόεδρο κ. Βασίλη Παπαστεργιάδη για την υποδοχή που τους επεφύλαξαν. 

«Πρώτα από όλα θέλω να ευχαριστήσω την κυβέρνηση της Βικτώριας και την παρουσία των υπουργών και όλων των εκπροσώπων, θέλω να ευχαριστήσω την Ελληνική Κοινότητα και τον πρόεδρό της Βασίλη Παπαστεργιάδη και όλα τα μέλη της Κοινότητας που παρευρίσκονται εδώ, όλους εσάς που αγκαλιάζετε με θέρμη και υποδέχεστε την εθνική μας σήμερα στη Μελβούρνη,» είπε χαρακτηριστικά.

«Είμαι ιδιαίτερα χαρούμενος και συγκινημένος γιατί μου δίνεται η ευκαιρία να βρεθώ εδώ για δεύτερη φορά μετά το 2006 και αυτή τη φορά για να δώσουμε ένα μεγάλο παιχνίδι που θα το χειροκροτήσετε  όλοι και οι Έλληνες και οι Αυστραλοί.

»Η Αυστραλία είμαι πολύ μακρινή χώρα από την δική μας. Αλλά είναι βέβαιο πως βρισκόμαστε πολύ κοντά και ιδιαίτερα με την ομοσπονδία ποδοσφαίρου της Αυστραλίας. 

»Θέλω να τονίσω ότι το ποδόσφαιρο είναι ο καλύτερος πρεσβευτής που ενώνει τους λαούς και τους φέρνει κοντά και ιδιαίτερα εδώ στην Αυστραλία που έχει τόσο πολύ Ελληνισμό.

Και οι δύο ομάδες θα δώσουν ένα πολύ καλό αγώνα αύριο για να μείνουμε όλοι ευχαριστημένοι. Πιστεύω ότι οι προπονητές θα βγάλουν τα συμπεράσματά τους για να προετοιμάσουν τις ομάδες για το Μουντιάλ της Ρωσίας και να δώσουν ένα δυνατόν παρών εκεί και οι δύο χώρες.»

Ο αρχηγός της ομάδας Βασίλης Τοροσίδης ευχαρίστησε με τη σειρά του όλους για την υποδοχή που τους έγινε, λέγοντας μεταξύ άλλων: «Για εμάς σημαίνει πολλά η δική σας παρουσία τόσο εδώ όσο και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο εσείς μας αντιμετωπίζετε από την πρώτη στιγμή. Είναι εκπληκτικό και σας ευχαριστούμε για αυτό με όλη μας τη δύναμη. Δεν μας αρέσει να λέμε μεγάλα λόγια. Ελπίζουμε μόνο να σας κάνουμε χαρούμενους αύριο το βράδυ.»

Στη συνέχεια οι παίκτες της Εθνικής φωτογραφήθηκαν με Ελληνόπουλα και ομογενείς που βρίσκονταν στην εκδήλωση και αποχώρησαν καταχειροκροτούμενοι.

Ο τρόπος της ήττας από την Αυστραλία στο φιλικό του Σίδνεϊ, δηλαδή με γκολ στο τελευταίο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων, δεν άρεσε καθόλου στον προπονητή της Εθνικής ομάδας, Μίχαελ Σκίμπε.

Ο Γερμανός εκλέκτορας παρατήρησε πως οι διεθνείς ήταν φανερά πιο κουρασμένοι από τους αντιπάλους τους, παραδέχθηκε ότι οι socceroos είχαν περισσότερες ευκαιρίες, αλλά έδωσε και σύνθημα ανασύνταξης για τον αγώνα που έπεται, στη Μελβούρνη.

«Θέλω να συγχαρώ την Αυστραλία για τη νίκη στο τελευταίο λεπτό. Δημιούργησαν πολλές ευκαιρίες και μερικές φορές ήμασταν τυχεροί που δεν δεχθήκαμε γκολ νωρίτερα. Από την άλλη, είμαστε στεναχωρημένοι για το γκολ στο τελευταίο λεπτό» δήλωσε ο Σκίμπε.

«Η Αυστραλία πίεσε πολύ με το παιχνίδι της, ειδικά στο πρώτο ημίχρονο που η ομάδα μου φάνηκε κουρασμένη. Στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο ήμασταν καλύτεροι και μέχρι το 80΄ ήταν ένα ισορροπημένο παιχνίδι. Στα τελευταία 10 λεπτά υπήρχε αρκετή πίεση και τελικά δεχθήκαμε το γκολ» πρόσθεσε.

«Ο αγωνιστικός χώρος και ο καιρός δεν μας βοήθησαν, αλλά από την άλλη γνωρίζαμε ότι θα υπήρχαν πολλές μάχες. Τώρα συγκεντρωνόμαστε στο ματς που θα γίνει στη Μελβούρνη» κατέληξε ο Σκίμπε.

Μπάρκας αντί του Καρνέζη…

Χωρίς τον Ορέστη Καρνέζη θα παραταχθεί στον δεύτερο φιλικό αγώνα με την Αυστραλία η Εθνική ομάδα, στις 7 Ιουνίου στη Μελβούρνη. Ο τερματοφύλακας της Ουντινέζε, ο οποίος τραυματίστηκε στη διάρκεια του σημερινού παιχνιδιού στη διάρκεια του πρώτου ημιχρόνου και αντικαταστάθηκε από τον Στέφανο Καπίνο, μετέβη σε νοσοκομείο του Σίδνεϊ συνοδευόμενος από τον γιατρό της ομάδας, Οδυσσέα Παξινό, όπου και υποβλήθηκε σε εξετάσεις.

Τα αποτελέσματά τους έδειξαν ότι έχει υποστεί κάκωση των αριστερών πλάγιων κοιλιακών από χτύπημα που δέχθηκε, κι ως εκ τούτου δεν μπορεί να συμμετάσχει στις προσεχείς υποχρεώσεις του αντιπροσωπευτικού συγκροτήματος. Ο ομοσπονδιακός προπονητής, Μίχαελ Σκίμπε, απηύθυνε πρόσκληση στον τερματοφύλακα του Ατρόμητου, Βασίλη Μπάρκα, ο οποίος θα ταξιδέψει από την Αθήνα για την Αυστραλία αύριο και θα ενσωματωθεί στην αποστολή της Εθνικής το απόγευμα της Δευτέρας 6 Ιουνίου.

Striker Apostolos Giannou said he expects “mixed emotions” if he plays for Australia in Saturday’s friendly against Greece – six months after briefly representing the Greek national team.

China-based Giannou, who was born in Greece but grew up in Australia, played for the former European champions in November but was allowed to switch to the Socceroos because his appearance was in a friendly.

Giannou represented both Greece and Australia at youth level but he was persuaded to commit his future to the Asian title-holders by a visit from Greek-born Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou.

“I guess, it’s mixed emotions for me,” the 26-year-old Guangzhou R&F forward told Australian broadcaster ABC.

“When Ange came to Greece to talk to me about playing for Australia he didn’t want to force me to do anything.

“I have a few friends in the Greek national team that’s for sure. It will be fun.”

Giannou made his Australia debut in March but his lone appearance for Greece, a 0-0 draw with Turkey, was shrouded in controversy.

The Greek FA was later fined and forfeited the match 3-0 for not submitting the required paperwork for Giannou, who made his Australia debut in the 7-0 win over Tajikistan in March.

Greece captain Andreas Samaris, a former national youth team-mate of Giannou, said he rated the striker highly from his days in Greek domestic soccer.

“I really like him as a player. He’s strong, he’s tall, he’s fast. I believe he was one of the best strikers in the Greek league and [now] for China,” Samaris said on Friday.

Giannou’s emergence comes at a time when Australia are searching for a successor for their record goal-scorer Tim Cahill, who is in the twilight of his career at 36.

Postecoglou has forwards Cahill, Nathan Burns, Matthew Leckie and Giannou available after they missed the 2-1 loss to England in Sunderland last month.

Greece, who failed to qualify for Euro 2016, have no injury concerns but coach Michael Skibbe left Benfica striker Kostas Mitroglou out of his squad.

The two sides will also meet in Melbourne on Tuesday.
