Greek smoking ban widely flouted

smoking_ban_web-thumb-large

Greece’s smoking ban for indoor public spaces, first introduced in September 2010, has all but gone up in smoke. Despite government pledges of vigilance and fines, smokers continue to light up in the vast majority of restaurants, bars and cafes.

Anti-smoking laws are only respected in public transport, medical facilities (though not always) and a small number of good, and usually pricey, restaurants. The ban appears to be completely ignored in the country’s tavernas, cafes and bars. Inspections by state authorities have eased dramatically.

“Since the municipal police force was disbanded, inspections have only been carried out if someone makes a complaint to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO),” Attica Regional Authority officials told Kathimerini.

Meanwhile, a four-digit telephone hotline where people could make complaints about alleged ban violations or get information is long out of order.

Currently, a body of public health inspectors set up to carry out on-site inspections only act upon complaints regarding ban violations in hospitals. Recently, a unit visited the Metaxa Cancer Hospital in Piraeus on two occasions to stop visitors from smoking on the premises of the clinic.

Of course one can find exceptions to the rule, as a small minority of smokers choose to respect the official restrictions, even if those are largely breached.
“Our venue was recently booked for an engagement party. We left it up to the guests to decide whether they would light up inside the hall. To my surprise, everyone would pop out for a smoke,” a restaurant-owner in Piraeus told the newspaper. “When I asked why, they said there were kids inside the room and that it would not be fair for non-smokers to put up with cigarette smoke,” he said.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry officials are examining ways to enforce the existing restrictions. “We need to bring the issue back into focus,” Ioannis Baskozos, general secretary of public health, told Kathimerini. “Different priorities may be put forward because of the state that the nation is in, but protecting [public health] from smoking is important,” he said.

Baskozos met last week with Panayiotis Behrakis, chairman of the National Steering Committee for Tobacco Control and president of the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention, to discuss the issue.

An action group will be set up in the coming weeks with the participation of KEELPNO, the National School of Public Health and the Hellenic Cancer Society.

Masked swordsman posed for photos before killing two people and wounding others at Swedish school

A masked man brandishing a sword broke into a school in Sweden, walking from classroom to classroom to stab students as they opened the door, killing two people and seriously wounding two others before being shot by police and later dying in hospital.

Local media showed what it said was a picture of the assailant carrying a sword and dressed in a black trench coat and helmet, posing for pictures with students shortly before the attack.

“We thought it was a joke, a Halloween prank or something, but it wasn’t,” one witness student told TV4.

The attack took place in the south-western town of Trollhattan at a school for children aged between six and 15, shocking a nation where such violence is rare.

Media reports said the assailant was wearing a mask, and school children initially thought it was a prank or a Halloween costume.

One teacher was found dead at the school, while a second victim died in hospital several hours later.

Swedish media reported the second victim was a young boy.

“We cannot confirm the second victim’s identity yet as the family is in the process of being informed,” hospital spokesman Nicklas Claesson said.

Hospital staff had previously confirmed that two boys, aged 11 and 15, were in critical condition with stab wounds, while another teacher who was seriously wounded in the attack was also being operated on.

The assailant, a 21-year-old man from Trollhattan who was shot by police at the scene, later died in hospital.

Police were alerted about the incident at 10:10 am local time and have already identified the attacker.

However, his identity has not been disclosed and the motive for the attack remains unclear.

“When we first saw him, we thought it was a joke. He was wearing a mask and black clothes and [carrying] a long sword. Some students wanted to take their picture with him and feel the sword,” one unidentified student told news agency TT.

When the man started attacking people, he quickly realised it was not a joke and fled as the assailant went from classroom to classroom looking for victims.

TT reported several knives were used in the attack.

Police said there was “a lot of confusion” at the school, saying there were still pupils and teachers inside more than two hours after the attack.

Several media outlets said the masked man had a YouTube account where he posted material glorifying Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, and critical of Islam and immigration.

‘A black day for Sweden’: Swedish PM

According to its website, the Kronan school has around 400 pupils, including many newly-arrived immigrants.

Swedish media described it as a “problem school”.

It had been criticised by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate for its lax security and on account of a number of disruptions which prevented the pupils from learning.

Teachers had complained to the inspectorate about the school library and cafe being open to the public and creating an insecure environment for the children, TT reported.

Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven was expected to visit the town later on Thursday, parliament’s Twitter account said.

“This is a black day for Sweden,” Mr Lofven said in a statement.

“My thoughts go to the victims and their families, the students and staff, and the entire community. No words can describe what they’re going through right now.”

“Young people have been attacked. It is terribly tragic,” police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg told reporters.

Crisis teams were at the school assisting parents and students.

But some parents outside were unhappy at the way the school handled the attack.

“No one from the school called me. I found out what happened from a neighbour when I was carrying out the trash. I got into my car and came here,” one father told TT after being reunited with his young daughter.

The girl, who was not identified, said the head teacher had come into her classroom and told them to stay inside and lock the door.

“We didn’t know what was happening,” she said.

Trollhattan is an industrial town of 57,000 and home to the former Swedish carmaker Saab which filed for bankruptcy in 2012.

School attacks are rare in normally-tranquil Sweden.

A 1961 school shooting in Kungalv, in south-western Sweden, left one person dead and six others injured.

No other mass shootings have occurred since then, though at least one attack has been foiled, in the southern city of Malmo in 2004. Other threats have been issued but not followed through.

Remains of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and daughter Khandalyce Pearce to return to Alice Springs after government offer, public help

6873224-3x2-340x227

Photo: Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson (right) and her two-year-old daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce (left) have been identified as victims of crime found five years apart.

The family of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Pearce says the pair will be laid to rest in Alice Springs thanks to funds raised by the public and the help of local government.

A person who identified themselves as family of the pair had been seeking to raise $5,000 to have the pair’s remains brought to Alice Springs.

Ms Pearce-Stevenson is believed to have been murdered and had her body left in Belanglo forest in NSW, while the remains of her two-year-old daughter Khandalyc were found dumped along a South Australian highway earlier this year.

“On the 21st of October 2015 our family was alerted to the devastating news that our beloved Karlie Jade Stevenson and her young daughter Khandalyce Pearce, both of whom had been missing since 2009, had been confirmed by DNA to be the bodies known only as the Belangalo Angel and the Little Wynarka suitcase Angel,” a message on the OzCrowd website said.

The two sets of remains, found more than 1,000 kilometres apart, had been a mystery until a caller gave police a lead that enabled Khandalyce to be identified, with news of the connection made public on Wednesday.

The OzCrowd post said the family had spent the last six years desperately trying to locate the mother and daughter.

“Our family is asking for assistance to help us raise the funds to bring Karlie and Khandalyce’s remains home to Alice Springs so that they can be reunited and laid to rest together with family,” the original post said.

“Help us finally bring them home and lay them to rest in peace.”

But on Thursday afternoon, $1,060 short of the target, the campaign ended after an offer of help.

“With your help this campaign was brought to people’s attention and we have now been offered some assistance from local government with costs,” a post from someone who appeared to be family of the deceased said.

“Together with the funds we have raised through this campaign we should now have enough to bring our angels home and give [them] the funeral and goodbyes they deserve!

“All funds will be used to lay these angels to rest, provide them with a beautiful service and to cover the costs of the memorials, headstones and other funeral-related costs.”

It is uncertain which government decided to come to the aid of the grieving family.

A spokesperson for Alice Springs Town Council was unaware of any offer to pay for the funeral and return of the remains, as was a representative of the Northern Territory Government.

Remains may have been dumped in Belanglo ‘as a ruse’

Meanwhile, SA Police Detective Superintendent Des Bray was asked on 891 ABC Adelaide about suggestions Ms Pearce-Stevenson may have been killed elsewhere and dumped at Belanglo as a ruse.

The forest is notorious as the former stomping ground of serial killer Ivan Milat, who was convicted in 1996 over the murders of seven young people in the area.

His nephew, Matthew Milat, was also sentenced in 2012 for killing his 17-year-old friend with an axe in the forest.

“The forest is infamous and it’s a reasonable theory to suggest the person [murder suspect] could have disposed of the body in the forest to throw us off track,” Superintendent Bray said.

“But it hasn’t, and we’re convinced that Karlie’s death has nothing to do with the previous crimes associated with the forest.”

Movements of Karlie and Khandalyce remain a mystery

Superintendent Bray said Karlie left Alice Springs in 2008 with her daughter to travel and find work.

They were last seen in November of that year, driving on the Stuart Highway near Coober Pedy.

He said their movements after that were a mystery.

Police believe they also travelled to Darwin, Adelaide and throughout the Murray and Riverland districts.

“Karlie and Khandalyce travelled extensively from Darwin through central Australia, Adelaide, probably through Victoria, Canberra and the Riverland,” Superintendent Bray said.

“So what we need is friends and associates to come forward.”

He asked owners of motels, hotels and caravan parks to check their records to see if the mother and daughter stayed at their business anytime since 2006.

People have returned to a roadside shrine near Wynarka where Khandalyce’s bones were found to leave flowers.

A local council has offered to cover the costs of bringing the remains of the mother and daughter home to central Australia and to pay for their funerals.

Police have received an enormous amount of information since revealing the mother and daughter’s identities on Wednesday, including 30 Crime Stopper calls from South Australia and about a dozen from other states.

The Day They Came Home, An International Short Fiction Writing Competition

TDTCH_FacebookCover

The Day They Came Home is the theme of a short fiction writing competition. This title refers to day the Parthenon Sculptures, currently held by the British Museum, are reunited in Athens.

The competition encourages writing that skips over the current polemics associated with reunification. It hopes to free imaginations to examine a terrain that treats the return as an inevitability, to delight in the possibilities of how this day unfolds, and to seek new meanings from their embodiment in a narrative whole at the Acropolis Museum. By rendering the imaginings of The Day They Came Home into short stories, the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures is brought closer to reality.

Stop and imagine that day…

Will it be a Saturday? What type of ceremony: simple and solemn, a cultural spectacle, a jubilant party? Which composer will we engage for the music and who will be asked to write a poem for that day? Will it be a public holiday for Greece? What will be the reactions of people on the street? Will there be official speeches full of rhetoric and emotion? What transport route will the sculptures take from London to Athens? Will there be a new Panathenaic procession? How will we acknowledge the British?
This last question is crucial. How will we describe the integral role the British will play in return of the Parthenon Sculptures and how will we celebrate their gesture?
These are just some of the possibilities for stories about The Day They Came Home. There are many more ways to imagine this day. It will be these acts of imagination that create the act of reality; of the sculptures navigation home.

Competition Details:
• The competition will be held in 2016.
• It will be an open competition and free to enter
• There will be a panel of international judges.
• Works are to be submitted in English with a maximum word length of 2500 words.
• Prize moneys and prize levels are yet to be confirmed.

The competition’s website will provide more information and updates before and during the competition (www.thedaytheycamehome.net)

The Seed of The Day They Came Home
Much of the inspiration for holding a writing competition with the theme The Day They Came Home coalesces around the power of narrative. In a talk given by Tom Kazas at the 2013 International Colloquy ‘Parthenon: An Icon of Global Citizenship’, and in the subsequent paper ‘The Parthenon Sculptures: Narratives of Possibility’, the narrative implications of one word, ‘sculptures’, were explored. He advocated for the use of this word as a replacement for the term ‘marbles’, identifying the dangers of treating these two words as synonymous; “they carry markedly different ideological content, that has had, and continues to have, a direct impact on how the issues of reunification are understood.”
Tom continues: “Imagine then the power of one story that creates a movement forward and away from the current arguments surrounding reunification. This one story becomes that of the day the sculptures return to Athens. Imagining The Day They Came Home allows us to describe a reality where the sculptures have returned, and by doing so we bring their actual return closer to reality. This story, in fact the many stories, have the freedom to investigate and rehearse the civic and personal journeys needed to navigate the sculptures back to Athens, into their home at the Acropolis Museum. This home, bathed in Attic light, vivifies the pentellic marble where the sculptures join in a physical and visual dialogue with the Acropolis hill.”
This writing competition is the result of a team effort by a number of activists who met and discussed the possibilities for action following the 2013 Sydney International Colloquy. The team has developed the The Day They Came Home into an international and collaborative project, one that the team sees as necessary to promote reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures.

AEK coach Dellas tenders resignation

dellas_quits_web-thumb-large

Traianos Dellas has resigned as coach of AEK Athens, the Super League club announced on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old former Greece defender, a key member of his country’s unexpected triumph at Euro 2004, had guided AEK to two successive promotions to regain its top flight status.

Bankruptcy in 2013 had forced the team out of the Super League for the first time in the club’s history.

“AEK would like to announce that the coach Traianos Dellas has submitted his resignation and it has been accepted,” said a club statement.

“Mr Dellas will coach the players for the final time tomorrow. The management of AEK thanks him for his contribution to the team for the past two-and-a-half years and for his part in helping the club return to the Super League.”

AEK’s under-20 coach Stelios Manolas will take up the post on an interim basis until a new coach is found.

Although AEK was thumped 4-0 by leaders Olympiakos Piraeus last Saturday, Dellas’ decision still comes as a surprise after AEK has begun the season in promising fashion. The Yellows are fourth in the standings with 13 points from seven matches, eight points behind Olympiakos.

Spaniard Manolo Jimenez, who coached the club to success in the Greek Cup in the 2010-11 season, is the front runner among potential candidates to replace Dellas, local media reported.

«Όταν πρέπει να περιγράψει κανείς το αεροδρόμιο Τσανγκί, δεν ξέρει από πού να πρωταρχίσει εκθειάζοντάς το: από το ότι είναι τόσο κοντά στο κέντρο της πόλης και η μετάβαση γίνεται σύντομα;

Ithaca-born scientist receives award for excellence in Medical Biological Sciences.

Acclaimed neuroscientist Professor George Paxinos AO is among ten leading researchers who were honoured for their work in this year’s NSW Premier’s Science and Engineering Prizes.

The award ceremony took place at Government House in Sydney on 7 October.

Professor Paxinos claimed the top prize in the category of Medical Biological Sciences (cell and molecular, medical, veterinary and genetics).

Newcastle’s laureate engineering professor Scott Sloan won Scientist of the Year, receiving a trophy and a $55,000 cash prize, while eight other esteemed professionals were recognised for excellence in their fields of specialisation and each awarded a prize of $5,000.

Held annually since 2008, the purpose of the institution is to honour science pioneers for their contribution and raise the community’s awareness of their work.

“The Premier’s Prizes for Science and Engineering are about celebrating our incredibly talented scientists and engineers, who, through their innovation, collaboration, resourcefulness and impact, have contributed to major advances in our well-being and economy,” said NSW Premier Mike Baird.

After finishing high school in Ithaca, Professor Paxinos received his BA in Psychology at the University of California and his PhD at McGill University, followed by a postdoctoral year at Yale University.

In 1994 he moved to Australia and continues his academic work as Senior Principal Research Fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia and Professor of Psychology and Medical Sciences at the University of NSW.

The 70-year-old neuroscientist has won numerous accolades and has been a member of the Academy of Athens since 2012, as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia since 2009.

The first book he authored, in collaboration with Charles Watson, titled The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates holds a place among the most cited scientific texts of all time.

He has since then published 160 research papers and 45 books on the structure of the brain and spinal cord of humans and experimental animals.

‘Modern day McCarthyism’: Labor angry at royal commission member request

The Labor Party has accused the trade union royal commission of “modern day McCarthyism” and has forced it to back down on a call for the personal details of thousands of members.

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus said the royal commission had issued a notice to produce records of up to 9000 members of the ALP Victorian branch.

Lawyers representing the ALP challenged the request, which was then withdrawn by the royal commission.

“This is modern day McCarthyism,” Mr Dreyfus said. “It’s a chilling intrusion into the personal affairs of thousands of ordinary Australians simply on the basis of their political affiliation.”

Mr Dreyfus said it was one thing for the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption to be attacking trade unions and another for it to be intruding into the private affairs of ordinary Australians.

Labor spokesman for employment and workplace relations Brendan O’Connor said the royal commission was seeking the names, birth dates, telephone numbers, credit card details and home addresses of thousands of ALP members.

The commission sent a notice to produce to the Victorian branch of the ALP on Wednesday asking for membership applications and renewal forms, including payment details, for two months to May 31, 2013.

Mr O’Connor said this request had left Labor in no doubt about the royal commission being tainted.

“Labor has said all along that this has been a tainted commission, spending $80 million of taxpayer money, a biased commission insofar as the way it’s treated the witnesses,” he said.

“We’ve talked about the kid gloves used to deal with [former Health Services Union official] Kathy Jackson. We’ve talked about the fact that the commissioner [Dyson Heydon] himself made admissions about him accepting an invitation to a Liberal Party fundraiser.

“And then of course presided over that conflict of interest, and found himself not in conflict of interest.

“But if there was ever any doubt that this is a tainted commission, today with the efforts to invade so outrageously in the lives of 9000 Victorians, I think that doubt can be put to an end.”

The notice to produce was issued as part of the commission’s inquiry into Victorian Labor MP Cesar Melhem’s operation of a slush fund known as Industry 2020.

Responding to Labor’s challenge on Thursday against the notice to produce, counsel assisting the royal commission Jeremy Stoljar, SC, said it would be withdrawn.

In objecting to the demand, Labor pointed out the notice to produce would involve the retrieval of thousands of documents.

Mr Stoljar conceded this could be “oppressive to the recipient of the notice” and that notice would not be pressed “and is withdrawn”.

Noel Hutley, SC, who appeared on behalf of the Victorian ALP, argued the notice to produce went beyond the terms of the commission’s inquiry.
