FC Shakhtar Donetsk made an impressive start to 2015 as they held FC Bayern München 0-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

The German side went into the encounter riding the crest of a wave after recording their biggest Bundesliga win since 1984 on Saturday. Yet once Shakhtar had blown off the cobwebs accumulated over their long winter break Bayern were increasingly frustrated, culminating in them playing with ten men as Xabi Alonso was sent off 65 minutes into his 100th UEFA Champions League match.

It was Shakhtar’s first outing in ten weeks and early on it showed. Bayern hit the cold ground running and threatened to overrun them – never mind ‘sweeper-keeper’, there were times in the first half when Manuel Neuer was an auxiliary midfielder. The visitors could have been ahead inside two minutes, Bastian Schweinsteiger flashing wide after being found in inexplicable space by Arjen Robben’s lofted pass.

Robben was a thorn in Shakhtar’s left side, picking, probing and always involved in the mesmerising one-touch passing in and around the box. But the incisiveness was not quite there, with final passes just that bit too weighty however much the elastic Thomas Müller stretched. The Pitmen dug deep and, as the game became fractious, they slowly but surely began chipping away.

Even the most tentative incursion upfield was greeted with cries of ‘Ukrayina’ though there was genuine cause for excitement when Darijo Srna won possession and fed Alex Teixeira. Alonso was forced to take a yellow card for his team, an intervention his colleagues would rue. After half-time Bayern’s attacking threat was nullified, too, as Shakhtar adopted a higher defensive line.

An hour came and went – by the same stage on Saturday the German side were 6-0 up against Hamburger SV. Alonso’s second yellow card, in similar circumstances to his first, made that eventual 8-0 victory a distant memory. Shakhtar had fatigue to deal with, so the numerical advantage served more to even things up than anything. There was little equal about the battle between defence and attack, though, and the teams will resume as they were in three weeks’ time.

Paris Saint-Germain staged a second-half revival to earn a home draw against Chelsea FC and leave their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie in the balance.

Chelsea were away-goals victors against Paris in last season’s quarter-finals despite losing in France and, as was the case ten months ago, José Mourinho’s side struck first, this time through Branislav Ivanović. The French champions responded positively after half-time, however, Edinson Cavani heading them level to keep home hopes alive ahead of the London return.

Paris won all three games at the Parc des Princes in the group stage, and are unbeaten in 32 European home matches, and despite injury problems they were first to threaten, Blaise Matuidi and Zlatan Ibrahimović forcing Thibaut Courtois to parry headers in quick succession.

Chelsea then showed their teeth for the first time as Eden Hazard – a scorer in Paris’s 3-1 first-leg success last term – found space down the right; Salvatore Sirigu clung onto the cross-shot. Courtois then beat away Cavani’s near-post header, but it was Chelsea who broke through.

Three of the visiting back four combined to unlock the Paris defence. John Terry retrieved possession on the left and his low cross was flicked on by Gary Cahill; Ivanović reacted smartly to nod past Sirigu, his first European goal since deciding the 2013 UEFA Europa League final.

The goalkeeper came to Chelsea’s rescue moments later, saving with his feet after Ibrahimović had sliced through the away defence. With Courtois prone, César Azpilicueta blocked Ezequiel Lavezzi’s follow-up.

The force was with Paris and, though Chelsea regrouped swiftly, Laurent Blanc’s men looked the likelier scorers. Cavani came close to providing a second goal nine minutes from time as he skipped away from Nemanja Matić; the shot was prodded wide of both Courtois and the far post.

There was to be one last notable chance, Ibrahimović powering through at the far post to apply a fierce downward header to a cross. Courtois clawed the ball over to ensure the teams will meet again all square.

Chelsea manager says rigours of Premier League make his job harder

Jose Mourinho was ruminating on the subject of Paris Saint-Germain today, and their plans for European domination, when he mentioned that he had been the subject of a putative job offer almost four years ago when the Qatari money had first taken grip in the French capital.

His chief contention was that PSG – like Real Madrid or Barcelona in Spain, or Bayern Munich, eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga – have it relatively easy while the English Premier League, with its exhausting, competitive schedule, is the one true test.

Since he came back to Chelsea in the summer of 2013 claiming that he has missed the Premier League he has bemoaned what he sees as the non-competitiveness of other European domestic leagues. As for PSG, currently third in Ligue 1, and two points behind Lyons in spite of their massive financial advantage, Mourinho entertained no doubts about their outcome.

“They know they are going to be champions,” he said. “They know the other teams will not resist and Paris even losing a couple of matches, drawing a couple of matches, they know week after week. They draw at home this weekend, but the distance to the leader is still only two points, so I think they know they are going to be champions.

“I know the PSG project well, I know it well because when they start this project with the owner, the president and Leonardo [then sporting director], I was to be the coach. I met them in Qatar. The project was to start dominating in France, to dominate in Europe. The domination in France is there, they are champions, champions, champions. They are in the League Cup final, they are in the quarter-finals of the French Cup, they are two points behind the leaders. So the domination of France is there.”

Later he added: “You see in Germany, for Bayern it’s a promenade. You see in Spain basically they win every game and they are waiting for Real against Barça, Barça against Real, to decide which one is the champion. Atletico was an exception. The Premier League is very strong, it’s very difficult to go to Europe at the maximum of your potential.”

Later in his Uefa press conference, when he was asked about the injury problems facing PSG after Saturday’s game against Caen, in which they had only nine players left on the pitch by the end, Mourinho could barely contain his contempt. “When the French players were on holiday at Christmas, we were playing five games in 10 days,” he said, “so don’t speak to me about game accumulation.”

“We are a different team with him,” Mourinho said. “I’m not saying better or worse, I’m saying different. The team grew up from pre-season with him and the team went in a certain direction with a style of play. Without him, we lose some control, some possession. We become the same team, well organised, good in transition. But with him, we control the game better. We have possession of the ball because of the style of player he is.

“In Europe, it is important to have experience. I’ve always said that the characteristics of the Premier League in every aspect make the Premier League something unique and beautiful.

“But we go to Europe and we find things you don’t find in the Premier League. The style of refereeing is different, the fair play from the players is also different. Sometimes we get more of the guy that dives, the guy that tries to get clever penalties, players with a different football culture. Now we are playing against a French team, but we could play German, Portuguese or Spanish and they all have different cultures.”

Mourinho knows that pressure is on. He consoles himself that he came back to Chelsea at the expense of other choices – like PSG – because this was where he was going to be challenged and tonight, midway through a second season at the club without a major trophy, that challenge is ever more present.

The Socceroos will play in Perth for the first time in over a decade when they kick off their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign in the west later this year.

Australia’s opponent for the clash will not be known until the draw takes place in April, with the date for the game also set to be decided then – with July or September the most likely.

The newly-crowned Asian champions have not played in Western Australia since they beat Indonesia 3-0 in a friendly at Subiaco Oval in 2005 in front of just 13,719 fans.

But Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop said he was confident that the Perth sporting public would support this game – which will be played at nib Stadium, the home of A-League leaders Perth Glory.

The WA government contributed $94.14 million towards the redevelopment of the venue in 2013, while the newly covered Eastern Grandstand and the new Southern Grandstand took the capacity for the venue to around 20,500.

There may be a chance to increase that figure at the northern end, as FIFA rules insist that no standing room areas are permitted for World Cup Qualifiers, so there is uncertainty around what will happen with the infamous “shed”.

“The Socceroos are on a role. They are Asian Cup champions; we know they played well in Brazil without getting results and this a fresh opportunity to see this fantastic young team playing in Australia,” Gallop said. “These opportunities don’t come around very often.

“This game means something; it’s a genuine qualification game, so I would expect fans would want to get out a watch the Socceroos.

“The first time the Socceroos will play in Australia after their Asian Cup win will be in Perth.”

Gallop said that while the FFA was keen to see the Socceroos play games in venues all around Australia, the WA government had made it worth their while to schedule the match in Perth.

“We obviously talked to a number of major event corporations and a number of state governments,” he said. “But it had to be worth our while to do that. It’s also important we make a good commercial return. I’m pleased to say the government has assisted us in that regard.

“We are likely to play eight or nine times. So it’s a home-away system, so we are likely to be in Australia about four times. First time will be here in Perth.”

If Perth football fans can fill nib Stadium for the World Cup qualifier, they may be rewarded with a Socceroos return in 2018 – the year that the Final will be played in Russia – to play the opening event of the new stadium in Burswood.

“Every time we play it’s an opportunity for people to vote with their feet and come out and sit in the seats,” Gallop said.

“We’re very confident about where the Socceroos are at in terms of the national following they’ve got.

“We said last week we’d very much like to be part of the opening of the new stadium. The Socceroos are the team we think represents the diversity, the multiculturalism of the country. And it would be fitting for the opening of that new ground to have the Socceroos playing.”

The Super League has turned into a two-horse race, with a favorite (Olympiakos) and an outsider (Panathinaikos). They both beat their opponents from Iraklio over the weekend and are set to meet at Panathinaikos’s home ground next Sunday. The third title hopeful, PAOK, slumped to yet another bad away loss on Sunday, at Atromitos, to get to 11 points from the top.

For 70 minutes relegation-threatened Ergotelis somehow managed to keep an impressive Olympiakos in check in Piraeus on Saturday.

Seeing that his players kept firing blanks, Olympiakos manager Vitor Pereira introduced two super-subs, and Jimmy Durmaz and Costas Fortounis (twice) scored in the last 20 minutes to gift the Reds a 3-0 win, five days before their return to Europa League action against Dnirpo in Ukraine.

Panathinaikos led 1-0 at OFI Crete on Sunday through NIkos Karelis, OFI ended the first half on top (2-1) via a Manolis Moniakis free-kick and a Giorgi Merebashvili penalty, but the Greens emerged victorious with a 3-2 score courtesy of second-half strikes by Danijel Pranjic and Karelis.

Δύο πολύτιμους βαθμούς στο «κυνήγι» της πρωτοπόρου Γιουβέντους απώλεσε η Ρόμα, μετά την ισοπαλία της (0-0) με την ουραγό Πάρμα στο «Ολίμπικο», σε αγώνα για την 23η ημέρα του ιταλικού πρωταθλήματος.

Η Μπράντφορντ έκανε ξανά το θαύμα της! Η μοναδική εκπρόσωπος της τρίτης κατηγορίας (League 1) συνεχίζει στους «8» του κυπέλλου Αγγλίας, καθώς μετά την Τσέλσι, απέκλεισε και τη Σάντερλαντ.

Την Κυριακή νίκησε 2-0 τις «Μαύρες Γάτες» στο «Βάλεϊ Παρέιντ» και θα αγωνιστεί στους προημιτελικούς για πρώτη φορά μετά από 39 χρόνια!

Τότε, μάλιστα, ηττήθηκε 1-0 από τη Σαουθάμπτον που στη συνέχεια κατέκτησε το τρόπαιο. Ο Τζόναθαν Στεντ που πέτυχε το δεύτερο γκολ στο 61΄ (το πρώτο ο Κλαρκ στο 3΄), έχει σκοράρει εναντίον όλων των ομάδων που έχει αποκλείσει η Μπράνφορντ και είναι πρώτος σκόρερ του θεσμού με 5 τέρματα.

Η κατάρρευση του ΠΑΟΚ συνεχίστηκε αυτή την Κυριακή στο Περιστέρι, με τον «δικέφαλο» του Βορρά να μένει με δέκα παίκτες από το 42′ όταν και αποβλήθηκε ο Κλάους Αθανασιάδης και τελικά να χάνει δια περιπάτου από τον Ατρόμητο (Ατρόμητος – ΠΑΟΚ 4-0).

Ο Παναθηναϊκός αν και βρέθηκε προ μεγάλης ανατροπής, τελικά κατάφερε να φύγει νικητής από την έδρα του ΟΦΗ (ΟΦΗ – ΠΑΟ 2-3) και να μειώσει ξανά στους 6 τη διαφορά από τον πρωτοπόρο Ολυμπιακό. Επεισόδια στο Ηράκλειο μετά το τέλος του αγώνα.

Στην Κέρκυρα, η ομώνυμη ομάδα επιβλήθηκε της Καλλονής (Κέρκυρα – Καλλονή 2-0) που έμεινε από νωρίς με 10 παίκτες, ενώ η Βέροια πανηγύρισε μέσα στη Λιβαδειά (Λεβαδειακός – Βέροια 0-2).

Οι ελπίδες του ΠΑΟΚ κατέρρευσαν στο Περιστέρι

Θριαμβευτικό ντεμπούτο του Νίκου Νιόπλια στον πάγκο του Ατρομήτου, ο οποίος για την 24η αγωνιστική της Σούπερ Λίγκας συνέτριψε με 4-0 επί του ΠΑΟΚ, που από το 42′ αγωνιζόταν με δέκα παίκτες, λόγω αποβολής του Αθανασιάδη.

Οι Δημούτσος (39′), Ούμπιδες (51′), Κατσουράνης (72΄) και Ναπολεόνι (77′) ήταν οι σκόρερ.

Στο ξεκίνημα του αγώνα, ο ΠΑΟΚ έδειξε να είναι καλύτερος και ήταν αυτός που απείλησε δύο φορές στο πρώτο εικοσάλεπτο, αλλά χωρίς επιτυχία.

Στο 9′ ο Περέιρα από κοντά έπιασε το γυριστό σουτ αλλά ο Γκορμπούνοφ απέκρουσε και στο 17′ ο Σαλπιγγίδης έφυγε στην πλάτη των αμυντικών, γύρισε προς τον Αθανασιάδη, αλλά ο Φυτανίδης πρόλαβε την τελευταία στιγμή και έκοψε την μπάλα.

Στη συνέχεια το ματς ισορρόπησε για να έρθει ένα τρίλεπτο όπου ο ΠΑΟΚ βρέθηκε και πίσω στο σκορ και με παίκτη λιγότερο.

Στο 39′ και σε σέντρα του Φυτανίδη, ο Δημούτσος με κεφαλιά έκανε το 1-0 και στο 42′ ο Αθανασιάδης, που ήδη είχε μια κίτρινη κάρτα, πάτησε το πόδι του Πίτου Γκαρσία, δέχθηκε τη 2η κίτρινη και αποβλήθηκε.

Λίγα λεπτά μετά το ξεκίνημα του β’ ημιχρόνου, τα πράγματα έγιναν ακόμη χειρότερα για την ομάδα του Άγγελου Αναστασιάδη, καθώς στο 51′ ο Ούμπιδες ξεχύθηκε μπροστά από κάθετη μπαλιά του Μαρσελίνιο και μπαίνοντας στην περιοχή «εκτέλεσε» τον Ιτάνζ.

Η προσπάθεια των φιλοξενούμενων να βγουν μπροστά και να διεκδικήσουν κάτι καλύτερο στο ματς, τους άφηνε συνεχώς εκτεθειμένους πίσω.

Ετσι στο 69′ σε αντεπίθεση τρεις παίκτες του Ατρομήτου με έναν αμυντικό του ΠΑΟΚ και τον Ναπολεόνι να σουτάρει στο δοκάρι, στο 72′ ο Κούρος βρέθηκε αφύλακτος από αριστερά, σούταρε, ο Ιτάνζ απέκρουσε και ο Κατσουράνης από κοντά έστειλε την μπάλα στα δίχτυα της πρώην ομάδας του και στο 77′ ο Ναπολεόνι μπήκε στην περιοχή από αριστερά και με πλασέ έκανε το τελικό 4-0.

Η ήττα που γνώρισε απόψε ο ΠΑΟΚ δεν είναι μόνο η βαρύτερη στην ιστορία του από τον Ατρόμητο, αλλά ουσιαστικά τον θέτει και εκτός διεκδίκησης του τίτλου, καθώς απέχει πλέον 11 βαθμούς από τον πρωτοπόρο Ολυμπιακό και 5 από τον Παναθηναϊκό.
