Juventus and Borussia Dortmund will meet for the first time since the 1997 UEFA Champions League final when they face off in the first leg of their round of 16 tie in Turin.

• For Dortmund, that final 18 years ago brought their first and only European Cup triumph to date. Two-times winners Juventus will be looking for a different outcome this time and can take heart from an impressive recent home record in Europe.

Previous meetings
• It was in Munich that Dortmund won 3-1 in the 1997 UEFA Champions League final. Substitute Lars Ricken – now Dortmund’s youth co-ordinator – scored their third goal after Alessandro Del Piero had replied to Karl-Heinz Riedle’s first-half double. Michael Zorc, today Dortmund’s sport director, was a late substitute.

• The final lineups on 28 May 1997 were:
Dortmund: Klos, Kohler, Kree, Sammer, Reuter, Lambert, Möller (Zorc 89), Sousa, Heinrich, Chapuisat (Ricken 70), Riedle (Herrlich 67).

• Dortmund have won five of their last seven UEFA Champions League away games. In this season’s competition, they won 3-0 at RSC Anderlecht and 4-0 at Galatasaray AŞ prior to a 2-0 loss at Arsenal.

• Dortmund’s record in Italy is W4 D1 L9. Their most recent visit brought a 2-1 defeat at SSC Napoli on matchday one last season.

• Dortmund last won in Italy in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round, albeit that 2-0 victory over Udinese Calcio (agg 2-2) was followed by a 4-3 loss on penalties. Roman Weidenfeller, Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer, Neven Subotić, Jakub Błaszczykowski, Sebastian Kehl and substitute Nuri Şahin all played. Błaszczykowski had a spot kick saved.

• Dortmund ended 2014 second from bottom in the Bundesliga. They failed to win either of their first two games of the year – drawing 0-0 with Bayer 04 Leverkusen and losing 1-0 at home to FC Augsburg – but have prevailed in their last three and are three points clear of the relegation zone.

• Those victories, including Friday’s 3-2 win at VfB Stuttgart, represent Dortmund’s longest winning run of the season in the league. Klopp’s men won three successive matches, culminating in the matchday one triumph over Arsenal FC, in August and September.

• Aubameyang has scored four goals in his last three outings, the defeats of SC Freiburg (3-0), 1. FSV Mainz 05 (4-2) and Stuttgart respectively.

• Reus extended his contract until 2019 on 10 February, three days before scoring against Mainz.

• Kevin Grosskreutz was ruled out for six weeks after tearing a thigh muscle versus Augsburg on 4 February.

Manchester City’s Samir Nasri said today that his side had shown Barcelona too much respect in last season’s Champions League round of 16 game at the Etihad and would not make the same mistake twice.

With around 650 clubs around Australia having already begun their FFA Cup preliminary rounds, Football Federation Australia (FFA) has announced it will make the competition fairer for the semi-professional and grassroots clubs.

Match scheduling has been condensed from last year, with a round of 32 matches played across three weeks instead of four and the quarter-finals played before the start of the 2015/16 A-League season.

Victorian NPL club Bentleigh Greens, who made it to the semi-finals of the competition, felt like they were unfairly disadvantaged as they were still playing eight weeks out of their season against A-League clubs that were just starting up their season.

“The grassroots clubs will be more match-fit because it’s closer to their season as it allows for a bit more space around the A-League pre-season,” FFA CEO David Gallop said at the Cup launch last week.

The final of the Cup will also be moved to November 7, a Saturday night, and no A-League matches will be scheduled on that weekend, giving the FFA Cup more prominence.

Adelaide United became the first team to win the Cup last year, beating Perth Glory 1-0, but did so on a Tuesday evening, sandwiched in between a full A-League round.

With the new NPL season about to begin, the excitement that surrounds our game will ensure that every player, coach, administrator and supporter will be starting the new season with great enthusiasm.

The game has never been more popular and we are seeing more and more boys and girls wanting to play football and become Socceroos and Matildas. The NPL plays a critical role in providing a pathway for all these boys and girls to realise their dreams. My own football roots lie in this community and my upbringing is full of road trips to the various junior grounds where I first gained my passion for the game.

I want to wish every club a successful and more importantly enjoyable season full of goals and great community and competitive spirit.

I would also like to extend great thanks to the Greek community for their overwhelming acknowledgement of the success of our National Team. Saturday 31 January was a great night for our country and our sport and I feel privileged and proud to have contributed to that achievement. I am very proud of my own Greek heritage and I have been humbled by the messages I have received from here and overseas from people of Greek origin.

The challenge to grow the game continues in our great country and I look forward to seeing the next generation of boys and girls show what they are made of once the new NPL season begins.

Having struggled badly in the A-League this season, Tony Popovic’s holders will be hard pressed to repeat their 2014 heroics when they embark on a new campaign.

Title-holders Western Sydney Wanderers will begin their AFC Champions League defence with a trip to Japan to face Kashima Antlers on Wednesday.

The Wanderers defeated Al Hilal 1-0 on aggregate in November to become the first Australian club to become Asian champions, and Tony Popovic’s side return to the competition in Group H, which also includes Kashima, Guangzhou Evergrande and FC Seoul.

Western Sydney’s first test is away to the Antlers on Wednesday and, although the Wanderers have been struggling on the domestic front to sit bottom of the A-League, Popovic cannot wait to test his team on the continental stage.

“We go to a fantastic tournament now to defend our title. We’ll go to Kashima and try to repeat that,” he said after the Wanderers’ 2-1 loss at Adelaide United on Saturday.

“We look forward to Japan, look forward to trying to do ourselves proud and trying to do the A-League proud again.

“We’re embracing that challenge. We’re proud to be in the ACL.”

Western Sydney have only claimed one victory in 16 matches in the 2014-15 A-League campaign and are 13 points behind sixth-placed Brisbane Roar, who occupy the last of the competition’s finals berths.

But they will hope a return to Asia might inspired a late-season recovery in the A-League, while with the J.League season yet to begin, Kashima could lack match sharpness.

Western Sydney claimed 10 clean sheets in 15 ACL matches in 2014, and Popovic is likely to focus on defence again this year.

There have been several changes to the Wanderers squad since their historic win in Riyadh, with Daniel Mullen and Vitor Saba, who both featured across the two-legged final, and Kwabena Appiah having since left the squad.

Brendon Santalab meanwhile, who played through the pain barrier in the final before undergoing shoulder surgery, will be back on the sidelines after suffering a recurrence of the same problem in 2-1 loss to Adelaide United on Saturday.

Yusuke Tanaka, Yojiro Takahagi, Sam Gallaway, Nick Kalmar and Kerem Bulut are among the newcomers registered for the Wanderers’ ACL campaign.

“I’ve been training and learning with the team since I’ve signed so I’m very keen to finally get out there and show the fans what I can do,” Bulut said.

Olympiakos goes down 2-1 thanks to Panathinaikos hit.

Panathinaikos downed Olympiakos 2-1 at home on Sunday to get to within three points from its archrival at the summit of the Super League after comprehensively outplaying the champion and only conceding a goal with the last kick of the game.

The Greens took full advantage of the tired legs of their visitors, who were still smarting from their 2-0 loss in Ukraine three days earlier. They outran Olympiakos in the first half and had them exhausted in the second, forcing them to commit serious errors in defense, to the extent that the final score appeared flattering for the Reds.

Four minutes after the interval Danijel Pranjic crossed the ball toward Marcus Berg, when Olympiakos defender Arthur Masuaku tried to intervene only to send the ball into his own team’s net.

Half an hour later it was 2-0 as Mladen Petric was once again the match winner for Panathinaikos with a low shot to the left-hand corner of goalkeeper Roberto.

The only thing Olympiakos could do was to grab a consolation goal through a free-kick by substitute Chori Dominguez two minutes past the time added on.

Olympiakos has a three-point advantage and its run-in appears easier compared with that of Panathinaikos, so it remains the favorite for the title.

Third-placed PAOK scored a 3-1 win at Veria to put previous poor performances behind it and cut the distance from the top to eight points. Facundo Perreira, Miguel Vitor and Cristian Noboa scored for the Thessaloniki giant, all in the first half, while Nicolao Dumitru pulled one back for the host.

Asteras Tripolis is now alone in fourth after thrashing hapless OFI 6-1 at home, as Panetolikos shared a goalless draw with host Panthrakikos at Komotini to drop to fifth.

Panionios scored a precious 1-0 victory over fellow struggling Levadiakos at home to crawl away from the drop zone.

In other games Kalloni beat PAS Giannina 1-0 on Lesvos and Platanias drew 1-1 with Kerkyra at Hania.

Βαριές κουβέντες βγήκαν από το στόμα του προέδρου του Ολυμπιακού, Βαγγέλη Μαρινάκη, μετά το τέλος του ντέρμπι με τον Παναθηναϊκό στη Λεωφόρο. Ο αρχηγός αποστολής των Πειραιωτών μίλησε στην κάμερα της nova και εξαπέλυσε δριμιά επίθεση προς τις αρχές του ποδοσφαίρου (κυρίως τη Σούπερ Λιγκ), αλλά και τη διοίκηση του Παναθηναϊκού, χαρακτηρίζοντας τις συνθήκες στο γήπεδο ως… κτηνωδία!

«Αυτά που έγιναν σήμερα στη Λεωφόρο, είχα να τα δω από τότε που… βομβάρδιζαν το Ιράκ. Συλλυπητήρια σε όσους διοικούν το ελληνικό ποδόσφαιρο. Αυτό που ζήσαμε ήταν μια κτηνωδία, ήταν ξεφτίλα. Οι παίκτες μας χτυπήθηκαν και δεν μπορούσαν να παίξουν μπάλα κάτω από αυτές τις συνθήκες. Στο Καραϊσκάκη προστατεύουμε το ποδόσφαιρο και δεν θα γίνουν ποτέ τέτοια πράγματα. Με γκολ των Κουτίνιο και Στέρλινγκ η Λίβερπουλ πέρασε νικηφόρα με 2-0 από την έδρα της Σαουθάμπτον, στον αγώνα με τον οποίο έκλεισε η αυλαία της 26ης ημέρας στην Premier League.

Η ομάδα του Μπρένταν Ρότζερς, που βρίσκεται σε διαρκή αγωνιστική άνοδο, έφτασε στην έκτη θέση και απέχει πια τρεις βαθμούς από την τρίτη Άρσεναλ, ενώ οι «Άγιοι» είναι πέμπτοι με ένα βαθμό διαφορά από τους «κόκκινους».

Δραματικό ήταν το φινάλε του αγώνα στο «Γουάιτ Χαρτ Λέιν» μεταξύ της Τότεναμ και της Γουέστ Χαμ, το οποίο έληξε ισόπαλο 2-2.

Σε ένα ντέρμπι που προηγήθηκαν επεισόδια στη βόλτα του Βαγγέλη Μαρινάκη στο χορτάρι και… κυνηγητό σε Περέιρα και παίκτες του Ολυμπιακού, ένας ανώτερος Παναθηναϊκός, νίκησε τους «ερυθρόλευκους» με 2-1 χάρη στα παιδαριώδη αμυντικά «ερυθρόλευκα» λάθη και μείωσε τη διαφορά από την κορυφή στους τρεις βαθμούς, 9 αγωνιστικές πριν από το φινάλε.

Νέα κακή εικόνα για τους Πειραιώτες σε ντέρμπι, καθώς για άλλη μια φορά δεν δικαιολόγησαν την ποιότητά τους.

Οι «πράσινοι» ήταν οι μεγάλοι νικητές της 25ης αγωνιστικής, χάρη στο αυτογκόλ του Μασουακού στο 49′ και του Πέτριτς στο 78′. Στο 7ο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων ο Ντομίνγκες με σουτ διαμόρφωσε το αποτέλεσμα και χάρισε στον Ολυμπιακό το πλεονέκτημα σε περίπτωση ισοβαθμίας.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός ήταν καλύτερος στο μεγαλύτερο διάστημα του αγώνα, απέναντι σε έναν Ολυμπιακό η εμφάνιση του οποίου δεν είχε πολλές διαφορές με αυτή στο «Ολιμπίσκι» του Κίεβου, το βράδυ της περασμένης Πέμπτης με την Ντνίπρο. Εάν εξαιρέσει κανείς την φάση του Ντουρμάζ στο 47΄, η ομάδα του Περέιρα δεν ανταποκρίθηκε στις απαιτήσεις ενός τόσο μεγάλου αγώνα.

Το τυχερό γκολ με το οποίο προηγήθηκε ο Παναθηναϊκός έδωσε «φτερά» στην ομάδα του Γιάννη Αναστασίου, η οποία έδειξε σε γενικές γραμμές ότι ήθελε τη νίκη περισσότερο από τον αντίπαλό της και τελικά την πήρε, μπαίνοντας για τα καλά στη μάχη του τίτλου.

Ο Ολυμπιακός κυκλοφορούσε καλύτερα τη μπάλα στα πρώτα λεπτά και στο 8΄ είχε την πρώτη του προσπάθεια προς την εστία των «πρασίνων», με το σουτ του Μανιάτη να κοντράρει στο Ζέκα και να μπλοκάρει ο Στιλ. Η «απάντηση» των «πρασίνων» ήρθε στο 12΄ με το φάουλ έξω από την περιοχή, που εκτέλεσε ο Νάνο κι έστειλε τη μπάλα λίγο άουτ.

Το ντέρμπι είχε ένταση, πάθος και δυνατά μαρκαρίσματα, αλλά ποιοτικά ήταν τραγικό με πολλά λάθη από τους παίκτες και των δύο ομάδων και καμία σημαντική φάση στην περιοχή των Στιλ και Ρομπέρτο.

Μετά το ημίωρο οι γηπεδούχοι πίεσαν περισσότερο και προσπάθησαν να δημιουργήσουν προβλήματα στην άμυνα των Πειραιωτών, που προτίμησαν στο διάστημα αυτό να μη ρισκάρουν μιας κι έβλεπαν ότι ο αντίπαλος δεν ήταν ιδιαίτερα απειλητικός και το μηδέν στην άμυνα δεν τους… ενόχλησε διόλου.

Στο 34΄ ο Καρέλης βγήκε στην αντεπίθεση, αλλά λειτούργησε ατομικά και αντί να γυρίσει στο Μπεργκ που ήταν μόνος του στο ύψος του πέναλτι προτίμησε να τελειώσει την φάση με αδύναμο σουτ που μπλόκαρε εύκολα ο Ρομπέρτο. Τρία λεπτά αργότερα, ο Ζέκα βρέθηκε σε καλή θέση στην περιοχή και πλάγια, έπιασε το σουτ που κατέληξε ψηλά άουτ.

Το δεύτερο μέρος ξεκίνησε με τεράστια ευκαιρία για τον Ολυμπιακό. Ο Ντουρμάζ βρέθηκε απέναντι από τον Στιλ στο 47΄ και με σχεδόν εξουδετερωμένο το γκολκίπερ των «πρασίνων» έστειλε τη μπάλα άουτ! Κι ενώ οι Πειραιώτες ήταν αυτοί που «άγγιξαν» το γκολ, ο Παναθηναϊκός ήταν η ομάδα που προηγήθηκε στο 49΄, με το αυτογκόλ του Μαζουακού μετά το γύρισμα του Πράνιτς (1-0).

Το παιχνίδι μετά το γκολ… άνοιξε για τα καλά και στο 50΄ το σουτ του Λαγού βρήκε στο πόδι αμυντικού του Ολυμπιακού και κατέληξε κόρνερ. Δύο λεπτά μετά ο Μήτρογλου βρέθηκε σε καλή θέση στην περιοχή, αλλά το τελείωμά του ήταν τραγικό. Το γκολ έδωσε την ευκαιρία στους «πράσινους» να οπισθοχωρήσουν και να «χτυπήσουν» στην κόντρα. Σε δύο φάσεις, 63΄ και 69΄ οι γηπεδούχοι απείλησαν με τους Πέτριτς και Μπεργκ (κεφαλιά άουτ).

Η κεφαλιά του Μήτρογλου στο 70΄ βρήκε το πάνω μέρος της οριζόντιας δοκού κι έφυγε άουτ, στην πρώτη ευκαιρία των Πειραιωτών μετά το γκολ που δέχθηκαν. Το ντέρμπι ουσιαστικά τελείωσε στο 78΄, όταν μετά τη λάθος συννεόηση ανάμεσα στους Σαντάνα και Μιλιβόγιεβιτς, ο Πέτριτς πήρε τη μπάλα και με μονοκόματο σουτ «έγραψε» το 2-0.

Τελικά, στο 7ο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων ο Ντομίνγκες με δυνατό σουτ μείωσε σε 2-1, αλλά δεν υπήρχε χρόνος για τίποτα περισσότερο και το «τριφύλλι» πανηγύρισε την 11η συνεχόμενη νίκη του.

Η σημερινή «μάχη» της Λεωφόρου ανάμεσα στον Παναθηναϊκό και τον Ολυμπιακό (19:30, Novasports1), εκτός από την γνωστή… αιώνια αντιπαλότητα, έχει και ιδιαίτερο βαθμολογικό ενδιαφέρον καθώς οι «πράσινοι» σε περίπτωση νίκης θα παραμείνουν στο κυνήγι των «ερυθρολεύκων» πλησιάζοντας τους μάλιστα στους τρεις βαθμούς. Από την άλλη η νίκη δίνει στους φιλοξενούμενους το πρωτάθλημα (εκτός απροόπτου) καθώς η ψαλίδα θα ανοίξει στους 9 βαθμούς.

Τα πλάνα του Αναστασίου

Ο Γιάννης Αναστασίου αναμένεται να παρατάξει με 4-4-2 την ομάδα κόντρα στους «ερυθρόλευκους». Συγκεκριμένα, κάτω από τα δοκάρια θα καθίσει ο Στιλ, ο οποίος μπροστά του – από δεξιά προς αριστερά – θα έχει τους Τριανταφυλλόπουλο, Ταυλαρίδη, Σίλντενφελντ και Χουχούμη.

Ως αμυντικό χαφ θα αγωνιστεί ο Λαγός, με εσωτερικούς μέσους τους Ζέκα και Πράνιτς. Ο Πέτριτς ως «δεκάρι» θα αγωνιστεί πίσω από τους Καρέλη και Μπεργκ.

Την αποστολή συμπληρώνουν οι Κοτσόλης, Νάνο, Μπούρμπος, Μέντες, Νίνης, Ατζαγκούν, Μαυρίας και Κλωναρίδης. Εκτός έμειναν οι οι Χρήστος Δώνης, Γιώργος Δώνης και Θανάσης Ντίνας.

Τα πλάνα του Περέιρα

Στο καθαρά αγωνιστικό, ο Περέιρα τεχνικός σκοπεύει να παρατάξει με σύστημα 4-2-3-1 τον Ολυμπιακό στο «Απόστολος Νικολαΐδης». Κάτω από τα δοκάρια θα καθίσει ο Ρομπέρτο, ο οποίος μπροστά του – από δεξιά προς αριστερά – θα έχει τους Ελαμπντελαουί, Σαντάνα, Σιόβα και Μαζουακού.

Στον άξονα θα είναι ο Μανιάτης με τον Μιλιβόγεβιτς, ενώ στα άκρα θα παίξουν ο Ντουρμάζ και ο Ντοσεβί. Ο Φορτούνης θα αναλάβει οργανωτικό ρόλο, ενώ ο Μήτρογλου θα αγωνιστεί στην κορυφή της επίθεσης.

Την αποστολή συμπληρώνουν οι Μέγιερι, Χάρα, Εντινγκά, Ντομίνγκες, Σαλίνο, Κασάμι και Αφελάι. Εκτός έμειναν οι τραυματίες Μποτία και Φουστέρ, όπως και οι Διαμαντάκος, Μπουχαλάκης, Γιαννούλης, Αυλωνίτης και Μπενίτες για λόγους τακτικής.

Τα μέτρα ασφαλείας

Ούτε καρφίτσα δεν θα πέφτει στο αποψινό ντέρμπι της Λεωφόρο και ο κόσμος του Παναθηναϊκού θα επιχειρήσει να σπρώξει την ομάδα του σε μία μεγάλη νίκη. Στο «τριφύλλι» είχαν συνεχείς επαφές τις τελευταίες μέρες με τους οργανωμένους κι έχουν ζητήσει αυτοσυγκράτηση και προσοχή, προκειμένου να μην τιμωρηθεί η ομάδα, αφού εκτός από αγωνιστική θα είναι και οικονομική η ζημιά.

Το μεσημέρι είναι η τελευταία σύσκεψη κορυφής ανάμεσα στους παράγοντες των δύο ομάδων και την Αστυνομία, ώστε να διευθετηθούν οι τελευταίες λεπτομέρειες και να μην υπάρξει το παραμικρό «παρατράγουδο».

Προϊστορία

Είκοσι μία νίκες μετράει ο Παναθηναϊκός ως γηπεδούχος με αντίπαλο τον Ολυμπιακό σε όλες τις διοργανώσεις. Από εκεί και πέρα, 26 ματς έχουν λήξει ισόπαλα και 18 έχουν πάρει οι Πειραιώτες. Στα τελευταία πέντε πρόσφατα παιχνίδια, ο Παναθηναϊκός έχει μόλις μία νίκη, άλλος ένας αγώνας έχει λήξει ισόπαλος και οι «ερυθρόλευκους» έχουν τρεις επιτυχίες.
