Chris Ikonomidis (L) hopes his Socceroos appearance will boost his first team hopes at Lazio.

Teenager Chris Ikonomidis hopes earning a dream Socceroos debut can convince his Italian club Lazio he’s ready for the big time.

The 19-year-old winger’s late cameo off the bench in Australia’s 0-0 draw with Macedonia in Skopje made him the first player in more than 30 years to debut for Australia before playing a senior club game.

Ikonomidis was a surprise inclusion in Ange Postecoglou’s squad, with the coach rewarding him for his stellar form with the Lazio reserves, where he is top scorer this season with 15 goals.

The Sydney-born attacker has been closing in on a first-team appearance in Italy, having been named on the bench three times.

And he feels the leap of faith shown by Postecoglou – and the lift gained from his international experience – can help him crack the Serie A this season.

“Somebody has to make the first move to give me my debut and Australia have done that,” Ikonomidis said.

“It has helped me a lot and I am really grateful for that because it’s really assured my club.

“If they weren’t 100 per cent sure, now they are definitely 100 per cent sure of my talent and hopefully they can bring me through soon.

“I think I am very close. The manager (Stefano Pioli) seems to believe a lot in me. We have 10 more really important games in the Serie A and hopefully I can get some minutes there, or even in the Coppa Italia.”

Ikonomidis has long dreamed of playing for Australia, rejecting several approaches from Greece – for whom he is also eligible.

Getting a few touches in a scoreless draw in front of just a few thousand Macedonian fans was not exactly what he had pictured, but it did nothing to diminish his pride and excitement.

“It’s incredible. I will always keep this with me,” Ikonomidis said.

“Even if it wasn’t a bicycle kick goal in the last minute, it was still special for me, my family and all my friends back home.

“I have a taste of international football now and it’s spurred me on to go back to my club, push even harder than before and prove to the boss and all the boys that I am worthy to be one of them and to remain in the squad for years to come, hopefully.”

Postecoglou spoke highly of the teen after the match.

“He’s looked pretty confident all week and he didn’t look out of place out there,” Postecoglou said.

“That’s great for us because it gives us another option up front.”

Επίσης, για πρώτη φορά θα δοθούν χρήματα στους συλλόγους που θα… προσφέρουν παίκτες για το EURO 2020 με ποσοστό! Συμφωνήθηκε, λοιπόν, ώστε η κατανομή των εσόδων από το Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ και το Γιουρόπα Λιγκ να γίνεται πιο ομοιόμορφα από την επόμενη αγωνιστική περίοδο. «Η ECA και η UEFA έχουν μαζί αναπτύξει έναν επαναστατικό μηχανισμό διανομής για το Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ και το Γιουρόπα Λιγκ, με στόχο το μοίρασμα της αύξησης των εσόδων από τις διοργανώσεις να γίνεται πιο ομοιόμορφα μεταξύ των ευρωπαϊκών συλλόγων», υπογραμμίζουν ECA και UEFA στην κοινή ανακοίνωση που εξέδωσαν από τη Στοκχόλμη.

«Οι σύλλογοι θα λάβουν το 8% των εσόδων από μεταδόσεις, εμπορικά δικαιώματα και εισιτήρια-φιλοξενία, με το μίνιμουμ να ορίζεται στα 200 εκατομμύρια ευρώ, μια αύξηση 50 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ σε σχέση με το μερίδιο των συλλόγων από τα έσοδα του EURO 2016», ανέφερε η ECA…Με βάση την ανακοίνωση της UEFA, για το Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ η συμμετοχή στους ομίλους θα αποφέρει σε κάθε ομάδα 12.000.000 ευρώ. Κάθε νίκη αμείβεται με 1.500.000 ευρώ, ενώ η ισοπαλία με 500.000 ευρώ. Η πρόκριση από τους ομίλους στη φάση των «16» φέρνει επιπλέον 5.500.000 ευρώ και στα προημιτελικά άλλα 6.000.000 ευρώ. Η παρουσία στα ημιτελικά θα δώσει στους συλλόγους 7.000.000 ευρώ. Στον τελικό, ο νικητής θα πάρει 15.000.000, ενώ ο φιναλίστ θα βάλει τα ταμεία του 10.500.000 ευρώ. Το «market pool» ανέρχεται στα 482.900.000 ευρώ και διανέμεται ανάλογα με τα τηλεοπτικά δικαιώματα και σε κάθε χώρα.Στο Γιουρόπα Λιγκ, η συμμετοχή στους ομίλους της διοργάνωσης αποφέρει στα ταμεία κάθε συλλόγου 2.400.000 ευρώ, κάθε νίκη σε αυτή τη φάση 360.000 και κάθε ισοπαλία 120.000 ευρώ. Η πρόκριση στους «32» δίνει 500.000 ευρώ στον πρώτο, 250.000 στο δεύτερο κάθε ομίλου… Η παρουσία στους «32» αξιολογείται με 500.000 ευρώ, στους «16» με 750.000 ευρώ, στα προημιτελικά με 1.000.000 ευρώ, στα ημιτελικά με 1.500.000 ευρώ. Στον τελικό, ο νικητής θα πάρει 6.500.000 ευρώ, ο φιναλίστ 3.500.000 ευρώ.  Turkish Cypriot soccer officials on Monday vowed to press ahead with attempts to reunite with the Cyprus Football Association, (CFA), triggering a political storm on the ethnically-split island.

In a controversy running to the heart of the highly-charged division of Cyprus, the Cyprus Turkish Football Association (CTFA) told soccer governing body FIFA on Monday they had launched a process to eventually become a member of the Greek Cypriot CFA.

A senior Turkish Cypriot official blasted the move “suicide” for the future of soccer in the isolated Turkish Cypriot breakaway state and urged the association to reconsider.

But CTFA president Hasan Sertoglu told a news conference on the Turkish side of Nicosia, Cyprus’s partitioned capital, they were forging ahead with their reforms.

“Today an era in Turkish Cypriot football is closing, and we are doing what we believe is right,” he said.

Turkish Cypriot sports minister Serdar Denktash was quoted in local media on Monday as describing the move “outrageous.” He threatened to cut funding to soccer clubs if they went ahead, media reported.

But Sertoglu responded: “This is not a one-man show. I have the full support of the (CTFA) executive committee.”

“This is not a political issue, we are doing this for the future of our youth,” he said, referring to the present isolation of Turkish Cypriot soccer.

Ethnic Greeks and Turks have lived separately for decades with the football authorities splitting in 1954 and Turkey invading the island 20 years later.

The Turkish Cypriot breakaway state is recognized only by Ankara, while a Greek Cypriot government effectively runs only the south and is internationally recognized as the sole legal authority on the island.

Without any formal affiliation to FIFA, the CTFA cannot compete in international competitions, reflecting the political isolation of the breakaway state.

The CTFA’s decision to change its statutes, and put them for ratification to its members “as soon as possible” comes 17 months after an initial agreement was signed in Zurich in November 2013 with CFA chairman Costakis Koutsokoumnis in the presence of FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini.

Under the terms of the Zurich agreement, the CTFA is to apply to be a member of the CFA, which will now mean Turkish clubs and players coming under the jurisdiction of the CFA which would then recognize the CTFA as one of its associate members.

“This is another clear confirmation of the CTFA decision, to regain our place, with all rights and obligations in the

CFA,” Sertoglu said in a letter to FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke on Monday

IN the lead-up to this morning’s tepid 0-0 draw between the Socceroos and FYR Macedonia in Skopje, the Football Federation of Macedonia website offered free tickets to the game.

One reply translated along the lines of, “If it was being played in my backyard I’d close the curtains.”

It was hard to disagree. With support for the Macedonian national team at an all-time low after a 2-1 loss to Belarus last week, the cavernous 33,500 Philip II Arena was less than 10 per-cent filled.

Add in the chilly night and six changes to the Australian starting side that drew 2-2 with Germany last Thursday, and the result was a game lacking in atmosphere and excitement.

It wouldn’t be fair to say that the Socceroos took a step back from the great progress that they have been making in recent months – they didn’t lose after all – but they didn’t make any further strides either, despite a start that showed plenty of promise.

As they inevitably do under Postecoglou’s coaching, the Socceroos began full of intent, Aaron Mooy, Mathew Leckie and James Troisi employing a slick interchange of passing to take play down Australia’s left side from the kick-off.

In the early stages it seemed just a matter of time before Leckie would get free down Australia’s left side and engineer the first score, but perhaps because of the number of changes, the Socceroos appeared to lack cohesion and, surprisingly, given the way Postecoglou has drilled them over the past year, desperation.

It was as if they felt the goals would eventually come, and were in no great hurry to make them happen.

They were the team making all the running, but time and again the final pass went astray and Macedonia was able to go onto the counter.

Against a better side Australia could have been in trouble but the Macedonians were devoid of precision in front of goal. Four times in the first half alone they set a good platform but three times the Socceroo defenders got back in numbers.

On the fourth occasion the Macedonian forward pushed the ball aimlessly over the sideline. It summed up their night.

Sadly, Australia’s finishing wasn’t much better. Leckie, Troisi and Tomi Juric all had chances that came to nothing.

In fact, apart from a bit of excitement late in the first half when Aussie born-and-bred Macedonian Daniel Georgievski engaged in some push and shove with Leckie, and Jedinak received a yellow card following a collision with Dushko Trajchevski, booing their own team was the only thing that kept the minuscule home crowd warm.

Apostolos (Paul) Giannou makes an international appearance for Greece’s national team in the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers.

Former Melbourne player Apostolos (Paul) Giannou was selected for the Greek national team for the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against Hungary this weekend.

Giannou began his football journey at South as an 11-year-old, before being called up by then Australian Under 17 Coach Ange Postecoglou as part of the AFC U-17 World Championship qualifying tournament in 2006.

Currently Giannou plays for Panionios Gymnastikos Sylogos Smyrnis in the Greek Super League, having scored on nine occasions and catching the eye of new Greek coach Sergio Markarián along the way.

FYR Macedonia defender Daniel Georgievski was born and raised in Sydney and stars with Melbourne Victory in the A-League – but he has no divided loyalties at the prospect of facing Australia in Skopje on Tuesday morning (AEDT).

With 21 caps for the country of his parents and with all but one season of his professional career in Europe, lining up against the green and gold isn’t tugging at the heart strings of the left-back, who has been an instant hit since arriving at Victory this season.

However the 27-year-old defender admits it’s more than just any match, explaining: “Being born and raised in Australia this game is going to be more memorable for me.

“To get the chance to play against Australia in my career is good thing. I’ll do my best to look at it like any other game because if I think different I might end up playing badly. You don’t want to get emotions mixed into it.”

Having escaped the attention of the Socceroos set up, Georgievski said: “I don’t think I have anything to prove. I did play in Australia and my parents are there.

“But I moved to Europe really because of Macedonia (playing for the national team).

“I was never contacted by Australia. So it was a one-way decision. The only time there was any contact was when they wanted training compensation for me playing in Europe, which was wasn’t very nice.

“I was waiting for Australia but no call was ever made … and I don’t look back on it.

“By playing for Macedonia I ended up playing Europa League and Champions League (with Steaua Bucharest), and got to where I am now, so I will never look back (with regret) over the decision I made seven years ago.

“I am here now and I am happy representing my country.”

Pressed on whether he thought that he could do a job for Australia in a left-back position which has often been up for grabs, he replied: “The fact you can’t switch national teams, I don’t even look into it.

“People like to have conversations about what if … but why would I waste my time thinking about what ifs when I have been involved in the Macedonian team for so long?”

With just two points from five games in EURO 2016 qualifying, FYR Macedonia suffered a 2-1 home loss to Belarus last week and is already out of contention in a group featuring Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine as it limps into battle with Australia in damage limitation mode.

“We have a lot of young players and a taken few bumps from the game against Belarus, but there is some quality there and hopefully that will shine through against a big country like Australia,” he added.

Georgievski, who has many relatives still in FYR Macedonia including an uncle who owns the hotel in which the Australian team is staying, said that coming from Australia, where he played his formative football with former national League side Marconi Stallions, he had had to rein in his aggression.

“I had to adapt to a lot of things coming to Europe,” he said. “And that was one thing. Obviously, coming back to Australia I have adapted again.”

While far from confident FYR Macedonia can pose a genuine threat to a Socceroos side riding a wave of belief after their 2-2 draw with Germany last week, he said: “It’s going to be an aggressive game. We do what we do and try not to worry too much about the other team.”

Despite his broad Aussie accent and western Sydney roots, Georgievski never devoted much energy to following the national team until the AFC Asian Cup 2015 which he watched with friends, insisting: “There’s no doubt I have  soft spot in my heart for Australia.

“Against Germany, though, I didn’t want them to have a good result because I didn’t want them to face us with too much confidence. But they will come with a lot of confidence.

“I am happy for them but not so much for ourselves right now.”

Adam, who was on Gerrard’s team, graced the Anfield turf alongside the likes of Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres and John Terry for the game in aid of the Liverpool FC Foundation.

Adam made 37 appearances for Liverpool in the 2011/12 season before his move to the Britannia Stadium.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, with Barcelona forward Suarez, who was a half-time substitute for Gerrard’s team, winning a spot-kick off opposing captain Carragher, which his own skipper converted.

Suarez was back at his former home for the first time since his summer move to Spain and was introduced at half-time along with ex-Reds striker Fernando Torres, the two delaying their entrance to appear in unison amid huge roars of support.

While it was unsurprising the Uruguayan garnered such adulation, Torres may not have expected a positive reception four years after he left Merseyside for Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The duo predictably forged a useful partnership for the final 45 minutes and it was Suarez who won the second penalty after he nutmegged Carragher before being hauled down by the television pundit.

It was a pair of strikers still plying their trade in this country who stole the show in the first half.

Liverpool’s own Mario Balotelli broke the deadlock with a vicious, swerving hit from 25 yards and it was from the Italian’s defence-splitting pass that Didier Drogba rounded Brad Jones and made it 2-0.

Gerrard, back on the Anfield turf seven days after his rapid dismissal against Manchester United, made no mistake against Pepe Reina from 12 yards to reduce the deficit before half-time and it was his second penalty in the second period that meant it finished all square.

Suarez could not muster up a winning goal as he headed the game’s final touch into the side-netting, but the biggest cheer was still reserved for him during the lap of honour.

Νίκη για τη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία…

Εντυπωσιακή η Βόρεια Ιρλανδία, νίκησε 2-1 τη Φινλανδία στο «Γουϊντσορ Παρκ» του Μπέλφαστ και έκανε ακόμα ένα βήμα για πρόκριση.

Μεγάλος πρωταγωνιστής ήταν ξανά ο Κάιλ Λάφερτι που σημείωσε τα δύο γκολ σε διάστημα πέντε λεπτών (33΄,38΄), ενώ στη συνέχεια μόνο οι αποκρούσεις του Χραντέτσκι κράτησαν το σκορ σε… αξιοπρεπή επίπεδα για τους Φινλανδούς, οι οποίοι μείωσαν στις καθυστερήσεις (90+1΄) με τον Σάντικ.

Έτσι, η Βόρεια Ιρλανδία έφτασε τους 12 βαθμούς μετά από 5 αγώνες στον 6ο προκριματικό όμιλο, όπου μετέχει η εθνική μας. Όσο για τον Λάφερτι, έχει πετύχει τα πέντε από τα οκτώ γκολ της ομάδας του.

Η Γερμανία έπαιξε όσο έπρεπε και χωρίς να εντυπωσιάσει κέρδισε 2-0 τη Γεωργία χάρη σε γκολ των Ρόις και Μίλερ. Έτσι έμεινε στη δεύτερη θέση σε ισοβαθμία με την Πολωνία, η οποία αν και κρατούσε τη νίκη μέσα στην Ιρλανδία από το 26ο λεπτό, ισοφαρίστηκε στο 90ο λεπτό και «πέταξε» δύο βαθμούς. Παρ’όλα αυτά παραμένει πρώτη μπροστά από τα Πάντσερ.

Εντυπωσιακή η Σκωτία, η οποία επικράτησε 6-1 του Γιβραλτάρ έχοντας σε μεγάλη μέρα τον Στίβεν Φλέτσερ που πέτυχε χατ τρικ.

Παρά το εκπληκτικό γκολ του Μάτιτς που ισοφάρισε προσωρινά, η Σερβία ηττήθηκε από την Πορτογαλία του Φερνάντνο Σάντος. Για του νικητές τα γκολ πέτυχαν δύο αμυντικοί, Καρβάλιο και ο Κοεντράο.

ΣΥΣΤΗΜΑ ΠΡΟΚΡΙΣΗΣ

Στην τελική φάση που θα διεξαχθεί στη Γαλλία (10/6-10/7 2016) θα συμμετάσχουν 24 ομάδες. Οι δύο πρώτες των εννέα ομίλων προκρίνονται απευθείας, μαζί με την καλύτερη τρίτη. Οι υπόλοιπες οκτώ ομάδες που θα κατακτήσουν την τρίτη θέση στον όμιλό τους, θα σχηματίσουν τέσσερα ζευγάρια που θα αναμετρηθούν σε αγώνες πλέι οφ (εντός-εκτός). Χωρίς προκριματικούς θα συμμετάσχει και η διοργανώτρια, Γαλλία.

Παρά την ανωτερότητά της στο μεγαλύτερο διάστημα του αγώνα, η Εθνική έμεινε στο 0-0 εναντίον της Ουγγαρίας στη Βουδαπέστη και πλέον διατηρεί ελάχιστες ελπίδες τουλάχιστον για την απευθείας πρόκριση στους τελικούς του EURO 2016. Το ματς έγινε στο πλαίσιο της 5ης αγωνιστικής του 6ου ομίλου και η Ελλάδα παραμένει στην τελευταία θέση με μόλις 2 βαθμούς με μοναδικό ρεαλιστικό στόχο πλέον την 3η θέση που οδηγεί στα μπαράζ.

Με δέκα «λεγεωνάριους» ξεκίνησε το ματς ο Σέρχιο Μαρκαριάν, στον ντεμπούτο του στον ελληνικό πάγκο. Ανάμεσά τους και ο Κυριάκος Παπαδόπουλος που επέστρεψε στην εθνική μετά από απουσία 2,5 χρόνων, ενώ ο μοναδικός της ενδεκάδας που αγωνίζεται στο ελληνικό πρωτάθλημα ήταν ο Στέφανος Αθανασιάδης. Παράλληλα, ίσως για πρώτη φορά στην Ιστορία, στο αρχικό σχήμα της Εθνικής δεν υπήρχε ποδοσφαιριστής από Ολυμπιακό, Παναθηναϊκό και ΑΕΚ!

Η εικόνα της «γαλανόλευκης» στο πρώτο 45λεπτο ήταν αρκετά καλή, με εξαιρετική κυκλοφορία της μπάλας και πολλά «τρεξίματα» στο χώρο του κέντρου. Δεν μετουσιώθηκε όμως σε δημιουργία ευκαιριών, αφού η μοναδική επιθετική απειλή για τους Ούγγρους προήλθε από δύο άστοχες τελικές προσπάθειες του Τοροσίδη στο πρώτο δεκάλεπτο. Από την άλλη πλευρά, ο Καρνέζης στο 19΄ πραγματοποίησε δύσκολη απόκρουση σε σουτ του Τζούτζακ, ενώ στο 24΄ σε αντεπίθεση ο Γκέρα βρέθηκε σε θέση βολής και από το σημείο του πέναλτι έστειλε τη μπάλα ψηλά άουτ.

Εντυπωσιακά μπήκε η Ελλάδα στο δεύτερο μισό του αγώνα, με πλαγιοκοπήσεις από Τοροσίδη, Σταφυλίδη και ένα καλό σουτ του Φετφατζίδη στο 51΄, δίνοντας δείγματα ομάδας αποφασισμένης να κυριαρχήσει. Με την κατοχή να πλησιάζει το 70% για την Ελλάδα, το μόνο που έλειπε ήταν το γκολ. Μετά το 65΄ κατάφεραν οι γηπεδούχοι να διαφύγουν από την ασφυκτική πίεση, χωρίς ωστόσο να προκαλέσουν την παραμικρή απειλή για την εστία του Ορέστη Καρνέζη.

Οι αλλαγές του Κατσουράνη (επανεμφάνιση μετά το Μουντιάλ 2014) και του Γιαννιώτα (ντεμπούτο) ένα τέταρτο πριν από το φινάλε, ήταν το τελευταίο χαρτί του Μαρκαριάν για να «αποδράσει» η Ελλάδά από το γήπεδο της Φερεντσβάρος. Στο 88΄ η τύχη χαμογέλασε στην εθνική, όταν ο Νίκολιτς μέσα από τη μικρή περιοχή… κατάφερε να στείλει τη μπάλα στις κερκίδες. Ακόμα κι αυτό, όμως, δεν ήταν αρκετό. Το 0-0 αφήνει την Ελλάδα στην τελευταία θέση, να ελπίζει πλέον σε ένα θαύμα.
