Chelsea believe Juventus are now ready to do business over Paul Pogba

pg-64-pogba-1-getty
Chelsea will push to the end of the transfer window to sign Paul Pogba and John Stones, with the Premier League champions now convinced that there is a willingness on the part of Juventus and Everton to sell as long as the transfer fee is right.

The club’s director in charge of transfers, Marina Granovskaia, remains in contact with Juventus over Pogba, rated at £70m by the Italians. That the Italians are still entertaining negotiations has given Chelsea belief that there is a willingness on the part of the club to sell their most prized asset this summer rather than wait to sell him to Barcelona when they emerge from their transfer embargo next year.

The deal for Pogba, 22, would break the British transfer record by more than £10m and, while its success is by no means guaranteed, sufficient encouragement has been given to Chelsea that they will pursue the deal this week.

The pursuit of Stones was advanced by the player’s official transfer request to Everton on Tuesday, which Chelsea believe was key to any transfer this summer. The 21-year-old Englishman, who is to be named in Roy Hodgson’s next full England squad, has demonstrated his determination to join the champions and there is belief that Everton are prepared to do a deal at the right price.

On Tuesday afternoon, Everton were formulating a response to the latest development in the Stones saga. It is understood that the player made his manager, Roberto Martinez, aware of the request before training on Tuesday. Last week Martinez said that a transfer request would not change the club’s official policy on Stones’ availability, that he is not for sale. There has always been an underlying acknowledgement that once the offer climbed beyond £30m serious consideration would have to be given.

Everton play Stones’ former club Barnsley on Wednesday in the Capital One Cup at Oakwell. It is a game Martinez might well have excused the player from, given he has started all three Premier League games so far this season.

Chelsea agreed for the £23.3m former Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado to go on loan to Juventus on Tuesday, although the deal is not understood to be financially related to their pursuit of Pogba. Signing Pogba will come down to whether Chelsea are prepared to meet the financial demands of the Italians, who have already sold his midfield partner Arturo Vidal this season for £28m to Bayern Munich.

Cuadrado came in to replace Andre Schürrle, sold to Wolfsburg, in January but since then the Colombian has failed to have any serious impact on the first team. He started just four Premier League games, and the last of those, against Sunderland in May, came after the title had been won. At first Mourinho said the player needed to adjust, but appeared to lose faith in him quickly.

Cuadrado’s place in the squad has been taken by Pedro and there is still the possibility that more could leave if Chelsea make further acquisitions. The club have been clear that they would not consider including Willian or Oscar in any deal for Pogba.

Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool: Petr Cech saves the day for Arsenal

Petr Cech saves the day for Arsene Wenger’s side by denying Christian Benteke and Philippe Coutinho as Aaron Ramsey has early effort wrongly chalked off  | r Cech saves the day for Arsene Wenger’s side by denying Christian Benteke and Philippe Coutinho as Aaron Ramsey has early effort wrongly chalked off.

It is three games and no goals conceded now for Liverpool. What was it Brendan Rodgers said about defence being easy?

The eventual champions may be elsewhere, but five into four doesn’t go – and five into three even less so if English clubs do not buck up their ideas in Europe – so at least one elite team is going to miss out on the Champions League again next season. That considered, this was a strong performance all round from Liverpool, and Rodgers will have been happier with the result.

Indeed, before the game, with captain Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana missing from midfield, and Jordan Ibe considered in need of a rest, there were some inside the travelling party who admitted they would have gladly shaken hands before kick-off on a 0-0 draw.

Looking at the shakiness of Arsenal’s defence, however, by half-time 5-1 to Liverpool might have been a fairer outcome. Arsenal were all over the place. They were very unfortunate to have Ramsey’s goal erroneously disallowed in the ninth minute, but after that they fell apart.

To be fair, the pessimists in the Liverpool camp were not to know that Arsenal’s two first-choice centre halves, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, would be ruled out prior to the game; or that Callum Chambers had seemingly forgotten how to defend since leaving Southampton. These factors then combined to create 45 minutes of mayhem.

Liverpool hit the bar, a post, were kept out by at least one wonderful save from Petr Cech and several last-ditch tackles, one of which could have resulted in a booking, or worse. Chambers and his partner Gabriel had never played together in a competitive fixture before, but that was no excuse.

They have both been at the club long enough to adjust to Arsenal’s style of play, and the speed and physical presence of elite Premier League forwards. By the end, Gabriel had found his feet, however. Not so Chambers, who was by turn bullied and beaten by Christian Benteke, at one stage contriving to lose a challenge in the air, before being nutmegged on the flat. It really wasn’t his night.

Full credit to Liverpool for earning the point, though. They were a significant attacking force early on, and resilient in the later stages as Wenger introduced fresher, quicker legs in the form of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

For a team that many tipped to be plunged into the first crisis of the season, seven points from nine, including visits to Stoke and Arsenal, is a hugely positive start. Yes, Liverpool were clinging on by the end but that was to be expected. Having lost their first home game of the season to West Ham, Arsenal were always going to throw the kitchen sink at victory here. That they came so close to defeat was a worrying sign, even with a makeshift defence. It was 1949 when Arsenal last lost their first two home games of the league season. Wenger wasn’t even born then.

Rodgers’ team announced its intention after just three minutes when a fine run by Emre Can ended with a pass to Benteke and a shot just wide. A minute later, Benteke found space on the right and his cross was lashed towards goal by Philippe Coutinho – striking the underside of the bar and somehow staying out with Cech beaten.

There then came an all-too-brief spell in which Arsenal could have taken the lead. Alexis Sanchez came close with a header from a Nacho Monreal cross and then Martin Skrtel and James Milner got into a terrible tangle trying to clear, before Sanchez poked the ball wide. The next chance should have been the opening goal, Ramsey played onside by at least one Liverpool defender, and possibly two, when he sped through to slide the ball past Simon Mignolet. Linesman Simon Bennett raised his flag for offside, an atrocious decision considering the benefit of doubt should go to the attacking player. After events against Bournemouth last week, it must be said Liverpool are also riding their luck right now.

Although not for the remainder of the first half. It was Liverpool, Liverpool and more Liverpool, all the way to half-time, Arsenal’s uncertainty clear from the 15th minute when Chambers struck a simple pass out from the back to Coutinho, who was clear on goal but rendered off balance at the vital moment by pressure from Francis Coquelin.

There was less to admire about Coquelin’s challenge on Benteke in similar circumstances eight minutes later. He didn’t appear to get any of the ball, but referee Michael Oliver didn’t see a foul. If he had, given the lack of defensive cover, the Frenchman could have been in serious trouble.

It was Gabriel’s turn to intervene in the 25th minute, after a fabulous ball to Milner from Coutinho, and the defender was needed again nine minutes later, when first Can then Benteke won headers and Coutinho sped on goal only to collapse under the pressure of Gabriel’s challenge.

In the 39th minute, new signing Roberto Firmino – starting his first game – hit a pass across the face of Arsenal’s goal, met by Benteke at the far post, yet somehow kept out by Cech. Two of the 10 points he is meant to be saving them this season right there, one thinks. From the resulting corner Cech had to be equally alert, saving a low shot by Firmino with his feet, late and unsighted. With the final attack of the half Coutinho left Hector Bellerin bedazzled from a wide position before curling a shot which struck the far post.

And then it was Arsenal’s turn.

The second half belonged to them, but not in quite the same way. They had all the possession, and the lion’s share of chances, but not as many that were as clear-cut as Liverpool’s. Sanchez shot just wide after Olivier Giroud laid the ball back in the 60th minute, and Dejan Lovren did enough to put Giroud off as he readied to shoot from close range nine minutes later, Mignolet clawing the ball clear. Liverpool’s goalkeeper made fine stops from Ramsey and Oxlade-Chamberlain, the last in the 90th minute. Nine goals have been scored in the final minute in the last 11 meetings of these sides, but it was not to be. Rodgers also took off the brilliant Coutinho for a defender, Alberto Moreno. See, easy.

Liverpool dominated the remainder of the opening 45 minutes and, if they failed to maintain that momentum, it was only because Arsenal came out with renewed vigour having no doubt seen Arsene Wenger’s less professorial side in the home dressing-room at half-time.

Except this was no desperate rearguard action. Well, not all of it, anyway. Three points here would not have flattered Liverpool, even though Arsenal placed them under immense pressure in the second half and had a perfectly good goal by Aaron Ramsey disallowed in the first.

arsenal_liverpool2

MVP

NPL Semi-Final: Hamilton Olympic sinks Lambton Jaffas 2-1

20150823_151433

On a waterlogged pitch at Darling St Oval, Hamilton Olympic drew first blood, beating Lambton Jaffas 2-1 in the second semi-final of the 2015 NPL competition.

Jaffas almost opened their account in the first minute when Luke Remington made a darting run into the Olympic box and despite being forced wide by Mason Campbell, fired a shot narrowly wide of the post.

Fifteen minutes later, Simon Mooney sent in a floating ball to the head of Kane Goodchild from a free kick who screwed his header slightly wide of Brad Swancott’s goal.

The opening 20 minutes of play are even but Jobe Wheelhouse, parked in front of Jaffas’ back four, is seeing a lot of the ball and is distributing passes unchallenged!

The first threat from Olympic comes from a long range blast by Ben Koina who forces the outstretched Swanson to fingertip the ball out.

In the 35th minute Simon Mooney curls in a ball to Jacob Bailey from a free kick who sends a powerful glancing header crashing onto the bar and into the Jaffas net! Olympic are up 1-0!

Only seconds before half time another well taken free kick by Simon Mooney forces a great save by Brad Swanson to keep the score at 1-0 by the half time interval!

The game is tough and in keeping with the previous two during the season in which both teams cancelled each other out and which both ended in draws.

Ten minutes into the second half Reece Cooper puts Simon Mooney through wide on the right, who side-steppes past a defender, only to fire over the post.

The warning signs are there and the smell of a second goal is imminent!

On the hour mark, Pat Brown executes a corner from the right and the towering figure of Kane Goodchild sends in another powerful header which ends up into the Jaffas net!

With the score at 0-2, Jaffas push forward in search for a goal which will keep them in the tie. Olympic are pushed back inside their half and behind the ball. It’s a cat and mouse game with Jaffas needing to score and Olympic relishing the prospect of catching them on the counter and scoring a third!

This is exactly what almost happened in the 68th minute when Ben Koina and Matthew Swan counter attacked and with only two defenders in front of them back-peddling, the former unleashed a powerful drive from outside the box which beat the goalkeeper but which cannoned off the bar and back into play instead of ending up at the back of the net!

Jaffas continue to push forward in search of the goal that will keep them in the tie and are unable to create a clear goal scoring chance.

Luke Remington receives the ball on the right but fires wide.

Fifteen minutes from time, a one-two combination between John Majurovski and Peter Macpherson, enables the later to create enough time and space to unleash a shot which ends up at the back of Danny Ireland’s net!

Two further opportunities present themselves through Reece Cooper for Olympic and Luke Remington for Jaffas before the referees final whistle finds Olympic 2-1 victors.

Olympic have drawn first blood but the tie is by no means over for either team. There is plenty of work for both sides next Sunday afternoon at Arthur Eden Oval.

Arsenal v Liverpool: Rodgers looking to dominate space

cq5dam_thumbnail_490_338_margin

Brendan Rodgers is confident he has found the blueprint for Liverpool to record a rare win at Arsenal on Monday.

Liverpool have won once in their 12 visits to Emirates Stadium, a 2-0 Barclays Premier League victory in August 2011, and were beaten 4-1 in last season’s corresponding fixture four months ago.

But Rodgers believes his side, buoyant after beginning the season with successive 1-0 wins over Stoke City and AFC Bournemouth, have what it takes to turn the tables on Arsene Wenger’s men this time around.

“If you assess the games we’ve had against Arsenal, especially at home, we’ve had dominance of the ball,” Rodgers said. “If you assess the last 10 games they’ve lost at home, the teams that have won have had dangerous possession.

“The winners have averaged four shots on target with 43 per cent possession. You can’t dominate the ball, but you can dominate space. Tactically, we arrive with a good mind of how to win it.”

Rodgers’ plans could be affected by the fitness of Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool captain was substituted early in the second half of Monday’s win over AFC Bournemouth due to a foot problem.

“We’re just assessing Jordan by the day,” Rodgers said. “We’ll see how he goes over the next 48 hours and take it from there.”

Liverpool have no new injury concerns, with Christian Benteke, who scored his first competitive goal for the club against AFC Bournemouth, set to lead the line again.

Wenger is eager for Arsenal to kick-start their campaign at home following a shock 2-0 defeat there by West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season.

“If you want to have a successful season you want to be strong at home,” said the Arsenal manager. “Normally we are strong at home. This is an opportunity to show that.

“We missed our first game and we had to look at ourselves, and we responded very well [with last Sunday’s win at Crystal Palace]. Now we need to come back to our usual strength that we have at home.

“This is a very important game where the result will of course be vital. It’s not a result that will decide [our title chances] but in our heads we know it’s very important.”

Alexis Sanchez made his first start of the campaign in the 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park, and Wenger expects the Chilean to be close to full fitness for Monday following his extended post-Copa America break.

Wenger also has no new injuries to contend with, although Jack Wilshere (ankle), Danny Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky (both knee) remain sidelined.

Pedro strikes on debut as Chelsea edge thriller

Pedro played a starring role but John Terry was sent off as Chelsea claimed their first win of the Barclays Premier League season with a thrilling 3-2 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Chelsea signed Pedro from Barcelona on Thursday and the Spain forward made an instant impact at The Hawthorns.

The 28-year-old opened his account for the champions with a deflected 20th-minute strike, but only after the returning Thibaut Courtois had saved James Morrison’s penalty six minutes earlier.

Jose Mourinho’s men made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark when Pedro set up Diego Costa for his first goal of the campaign, before Morrison redeemed himself by pulling one back.

Cesar Azpilicueta’s maiden BPL goal then re-established Chelsea’s command of the match as they went in 3-1 to the good at half-time.

However, Chelsea captain Terry, who was substituted at half-time of last week’s chastening 3-0 loss at Manchester City, saw red early in the second period for impeding Salomon Rondon as he raced towards goal.

West Brom, without striker Saido Berahino in the squad, took advantage soon after through a superb Morrison header, but could not complete the comeback as 10-man Chelsea held on.

Costa dragged an early effort wide but Chelsea looked set to fall behind when Nemanja Matic tripped Callum McManaman just inside the area.

Morrison stepped up, but Courtois was equal to the midfielder’s low spot-kick, which was directed straight down the middle, and turned the ball over the bar with his legs.

And West Brom were punished six minutes later as Eden Hazard flicked the ball into Pedro, whose left-footed shot from the edge of the area took a deflection off Jonas Olsson and into Boaz Myhill’s bottom-left corner.

Chelsea then doubled their advantage with a superb counter-attack rounded off by Costa.

Willian fed the ball to Pedro and his shot across goal was turned in by international team-mate Costa from point-blank range.

A sloppy spell of Chelsea possession presented the hosts with a way back into the game as Rondon acrobatically turned James McClean’s deep cross into the path of Morrison to lash a shot past Courtois.

More good work from Pedro was wasted as Willian passed up a clear chance to make it 3-1, but Chelsea did restore their two-goal advantage through Azpilicueta’s composed 42nd-minute finish after Costa had cushioned a ball over the top to the onrushing full-back.

Any hope of a comfortable second half for Chelsea evaporated with Terry’s dismissal, and Tony Pulis’ men capitalised five minutes later.

Morrison rose highest to head McManaman’s excellent cross from the left in off the crossbar and set up a frantic finish.

Costa and Rondon went close at either end before McManaman spurned the best chance to earn a share of the spoils as Chelsea held firm to collect a hard-earned three points.

West Bromwich Albion head coach Tony Pulis: “The goals we’ve conceded have been disappointing.

“You have to be very resolute when you haven’t got the ball and have that flair when you have got the ball. I thought we got 50 per cent of it right.

“We looked good in possession and we looked like we were going to create opportunities and chances but we’ve got to be more resolute.”

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: “Fantastic performance. With 10 men, the spirit, the organisation, the fight in defensive areas, and the intelligence to keep the ball, I am very happy.

“We deserved it. It was difficult but we deserved it.

“3-1 was short with 11 against 11, and with the chances we created, the space we found, and the way we attacked their defensive line.

“Then with one player less – we are getting experience of that – we adapted well but they scored to make it 3-2. We had the best chances to score the next goal.

“I’m happy we controlled the game well, and I’m happy with the spirit because the players really wanted to win.”
