Nick Kyrgios is faced with the world number 21 Mikhail Youzhny in the opening match of the US Grand Slam, while Thanasi Kokkinakis still vies for a spot.

Tennis wonderboy Nick Kyrgios will have to face tough competition straight away in the US Open.

The 19-year-old will be up against 21st-seed Russian Mikhail Youzhny, while his fellow compatriots aren’t in for easier draws either.
Lleyton Hewitt will come up against sixth seed Tomas Berdych, while Marinko Matosevic was handed the toughest fixture, going against former world number one and five-time US Open winner Roger Federer.

Of the other Aussie men, Matthew Ebden faces German Tobias Kamke and Bernard Tomic plays Germany’s Dustin Brown.

First-round match-ups for the Australian women see Casey Dellacqua face Austria’s Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in the first round, Aila Tomljanovic play 15th seed Carla Suarez Navarro and Jarmila Gajdosova up against American Madison Keys.

Kyrgios is now ranked 58th in the world – only 16 places shy of former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt – after his amazing Wimbledon performance beating champion Rafael Nadal.

Kyrgios’ friend and doubles partner, Thanasi Kokkinakis, might also be joining him in the US Open, after he won his first-round qualifying match.

The 18-year-old recovered from a third-set deficit to beat Croatia’s Nikola Mekti 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in New York this week.

He will next face Japanese teen Yoshihito Nishioka, who upset fifth-seeded Argentine Horacio Zeballos.

Fellow Australians James Duckworth and Arina Rodionova also advanced to the second round after scoring three-set victories.

Baghdatis to make ninth appearance at US Open

Marcos Baghdatis is hoping to progress past the third round in the US Open after fantastic performances in the ATP American rounds.

He won his second ATP Challenger Tour title in as many weeks last week as he defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the final of the Cal Open Tennis Championships in Aptos.

“It’s been a long run the past two or three years with injuries. Winning last week and this week is a good sign,” Baghdatis admitted.

Standing in his way will be 12th seed Marin Cilic. The 25-year-old was banned last year to compete in the US Open after a drug test came back positive, but he will be eager to return to the grand slam.

Last year, Baghdatis enjoyed his best showing at the US Open when he reached the third round, beating Kevin Anderson before falling to Stan Wawrinka.
The US Open begins on August 25, finishing on September 8.

Super League returns with Kerkyra and Niki Volos

Greek football fans will be able to fill their post World Cup blues with an exciting first round fixture for Greece’s Super League.

Returning to keep their title, Olympiakos will be up against newly promoted Niki Volos on Sunday. Niki Volos returns to the top tier after 48 years.

Also promoted to the top is Kerkyra, who will play Panthrakikos on Sunday.

PAOK has a simple fixture on Monday, welcoming fans back to the Toumba when they play Kalloni.

Greek Cup winners, Panathinaikos will hope to attest their Champions League failure and start the season with a win against Levadiakos on Monday.

An interesting match to watch will be PAS Giannina and Asteras Tripolis on Monday, while all eyes will be on the season opener of OFI and Panaitolikos.

THE Premier League is underway, and the feast for football fans continues on the weekend when the 2014-2015 La Liga season kicks off in Spain.

If the title race in England is going to be compelling, then it’s all-out war in Spain to arrest the competition’s top prize from Atletico Madrid.

Real have just enjoyed a slight, ahem, flurry on James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Keylor Navas, while they haven’t let go Sami Khedira and Angel di Mari yet either.

1. LUIS SUAREZ

Barcelona- Barcelona was undeterred by Luis Suarez’s infamous bite of an Italian opponent at the World Cup that further tarnished his reputation and will keep him sidelined until October. The Catalan club paid Liverpool $108 million for the Premier League’s leading scorer last season. The 27-year-old Uruguay forward signed for five years.

2. JAMES RODRIGUEZ

The midfielder was the revelation of this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. His tournament-leading six goals for Colombia earned him the Golden Boot trophy and the attention of Real Madrid. The European Cup winners paid Monaco $108 million for the 23-year-old, who signed for six seasons.

3. ANTOINE GRIEZMANN:

Atletico Madrid made several signings this season but the biggest investment was in 23-year-old France winger Antoine Griezmann. Atletico spent $40 million for the explosive forward who scored 19 goals for Real Sociedad last campaign.

4. TONI KROOS

Midfielder Toni Kroos helped guide Germany through its brilliant World Cup campaign to be crowned the best team on the globe. He then packed his bags for Real Madrid after it lured him away from Bayern Munich with a six-year contract and paid his $33 million transfer fee.

5. MARIO MANDZUKIC

Needing to replace its leading scorer after Diego Costa’s exit, Atletico Madrid has entrusted its attack to Mario Mandzukic as it seeks to defend its La Liga title. The Croatia striker moved from Bayern Munich on a $29.4-million transfer.

Παρά την πολύ καλή της εμφάνιση για 70 λεπτά και το -μέχρι τότε- προβάδισμα που είχε απέναντι στην Τότεναμ, η ΑΕ Λεμεσού έχασε τελικά 1-2 στην Κύπρο από τους Λονδρέζους που πήραν σαφές προβάδισμα πρόκρισης.

Η ομάδα της Λεμεσού ξεκίνησε ιδανικά το ματς, όταν ο Σαρντινέρο άνοιξε το σκορ στο 14′ με τους παίκτες του Ιβάιλο Πέτεφ να στέκονται πολύ καλά στον αγωνιστικό χώρο.

Τα πάντα ήρθαν «τούμπα» μέσα σε ένα εξάλεπτο, αφού αρχικά ο Σολδάδο (74′) και εν συνεχεία ο Κέιν (80′, είχε δοκάρι στο 71′) έδωσαν το προβάδισμα στην Τότεναμ, που τελικά έμεινε μέχρι τέλους, κάνοντας δύσκολο το έργο των Κυπρίων στη ρεβάνς του «Γουάιτ Χαρτ Λέιν».

Η αδύναμη Ζίμπρου έβαλε σε μπελάδες τον ΠΑΟΚ. Ο Δικέφαλος ηττήθηκε 1-0 και καλείται στη ρεβάνς της Τούμπας σε μία εβδομάδα να πετύχει την ανατροπή και να πάρει το εισιτήριο για τους ομίλους του Europa League.

O ΠΑΟΚ μπήκε αρκετά δυνατά στο παιχνίδι και κατάφερε να απειλήσει την εστία της Ζίμπρου μόλις στο 5ο λεπτό της αναμέτρησης. Ο Στέλιος Κίτσιου έπιασε ένα πολύ δυνατό σουτ, αλλά ο αντίπαλος τερματοφύλακας έδιωξε σε κόρνερ. Οι παίκτες του Αναστασιάδη δεν απειλήθηκαν σχετικά από αυτούς της Ζίμπρου, αφού ήταν πιο αποφασιστικοί και διόρθωναν τα όποια λάθη γίνονταν στον χώρο του κέντρου.

Μπορεί ο ΠΑΟΚ να είχε την κατοχή και την πρωτοβουλία των κινήσεων, αλλά δεν κατάφερε πέρα από τη φάση που αναφέραμε πιο πάνω να απειλήσει με αξιώσεις την εστία των γηπεδούχων. Υπήρχε θέμα στην ανάπτυξη του παιχνιδιού του ΠΑΟΚ. Οι αμυντικοί του “Δικέφαλου” έκαναν βαθιές μπαλιές με αποτέλεσμα να μην βρίσκουν με ιδιαίτερη ευκολία και ευστοχία τους επιθετικούς.

Ο ΠΑΟΚ είχε την μπάλα στα πόδια του, αλλά όταν έφτανε η στιγμή για μία καλή τελική που θα μπορούσε να αλλάξει το σκορ, Σαλπιγγίδης και Μακ, κυρίως, δεν έκαναν τις σωστές επιλογές.

Το πρώτο ημίχρονο “έκλεισε” όπως άρχισε. Με τον “Δικέφαλο” να χάνει μια σημαντική ευκαιρία για να κάνει το 0-1. Ο Μακ εκτέλεσε το κόρνερ, ένα από τα πολλά που κέρδισε ο ΠΑΟΚ στο πρώτο μέρος, αλλά η κεφαλιά του Κατσικά σταμάτησε στο δοκάρι του Ρούσου.

Στην επανάληψη τα πράγματα δεν άλλαξαν πολύ. Ο ΠΑΟΚ συνέχισε να έχει την κατοχή της μπάλας, αλλά να μην μπορεί να απειλήσει την εστία της Ζίμπρου. Το πρόβλημα της τελικής πάσας παρέμεινε άλυτο και στο δεύτερο μέρος. Αυτό όσον αφορά στο επιθετικό κομμάτι, αφού αμυντικά ο “Δικέφαλος”… κατάφερε να δεχθεί γκολ στο 79′ όταν ο Μπουργκίου πήρε την κεφαλιά μετά από μονομαχία με τον Σκόνδρα και ισοφάρισε για τη Ζίμπρου. Ο τρόπος; Μα φυσικά από στημένη φάση, παράγοντας που είχε στοιχίσει στον ΠΑΟΚ και κατά την περίοδο της προετοιμασίας. Αν θέλαμε, πάντως, να δικαιολογήσουμε με κάποιον τρόπο τους παίκτες του Αναστασιάδη, πρέπει να αναφέρουμε ότι πριν από τη φάση του γκολ η άμυνα του ΠΑΟΚ ήταν αποδιοργανωμένη, εξαιτίας του τραυματισμού του Κίτσιου, που λίγα δευτερόλεπτα πριν έγινε αλλαγή. Μάλιστα, ένα λεπτό πριν το τέλος του αγώνα η Ζίμπρου έχασε τεράστια ευκαιρία για να διπλασιάσει τα τέρματά της, αλλά η μπάλα σταμάτησε στο δοκάρι. Το παιχνίδι έληξε 1-0 υπέρ της Ζίμπρου και ο ΠΑΟΚ θα πρέπει να είναι πάρα πολύ καλύτερος στην Τούμπα για να καταφέρει να σπάσει την άμυνα των Μολδαβών που θα κατεβούν στο γήπεδο για να καταστρέψουν το παιχνίδι του “Δικέφαλου”.

MVP:

Ο Ρόμπερτ Μακ όσο αγωνίστηκε ήταν από τους καλύτερους παίκτες του ΠΑΟΚ. Ο Σλοβάκος είχε ταχύτητα και προσπάθησε να δημιουργήσει κινδύνους για τον “Δικέφαλο”. Το κενό του Σλοβάκου φάνηκε ακόμη περισσότερο, όταν έγινε αλλαγή και ο ΠΑΟΚ δεν απείλησε ξανά την εστία της Ζίμπρου, με εξαίρεση μία φάση με τον Αθανασιάδη.

Αδύναμος κρίκος:

Ο Μααρτεν Μάρτενς φάνηκε για ακόμη ένα παιχνίδι πως δεν είναι σε καλή κατάσταση. Μπήκε στον αγώνα για να δώσει μία επιθετικότητα στην ομάδα, αλλά δεν κατάφερε να κάνει την διαφορά στο δημιουργικό κομμάτι.

Σχόλιο:

Η εικόνα του ΠΑΟΚ με δεδομένη την δυναμικότητα της Ζίμπρου ήταν κατώτερη του μετρίου. Επιθετικά έχασε ευκαιρίες, αλλά φάνηκε να έχει πρόβλημα στο κομμάτι της δημιουργίας φάσεων. Αμυντικά φάνηκε για ακόμη ένα ματς πως αντιμετωπίζει σοβαρό πρόβλημα στις στημένες φάσεις.

Ο Αστέρας Τρίπολης συνεχίζει να εντυπωσιάζει στην Ευρώπη. Αυτή τη φορά θύμα του η Μακάμπι Τελ Αβίβ. Οι Αρκάδες νίκησαν 2-0 και έχουν το πάνω χέρι για πρόκριση στους ομίλους του Europa League. Σε μία εβδομάδα η ιστορική ρεβάνς για την ομάδα του Αστέρα. Μάτσα και Ζησόπουλος τα γκολ του θριάμβου.

Ο Αστέρας απέδειξε και στο πέμπτο του ευρωπαϊκό ματς ότι εφέτος δεν αστειεύεται. Οι Αρκάδες με σοβαρό και πειθαρχημένο παιχνίδι κέρδισαν 2-0 την Μακάμπι και έβαλαν τις βάσεις για πρόκριση στους ομίλους του Europa League.

Με τον Πάμπλο Ντε Μπλάσις να έχει -και πάλι- τρελά κέφια και να κάνει άνω κάτω την άμυνα των ισραηλινών, οι κιτρινομπλέ δημιούργησαν πολλές ευκαιρίες, σκόραραν από μία φορά σε κάθε ημίχρονο ενώ το σκορ θα μπορούσε να ήταν ακόμη μεγαλύτερο αν ο Μπαράλες δεν αστοχούσε σε ανεπανάληπτο τετ α τετ στο 85.

Ο Πάμπλο Μάσα με φόρα από τα δύο γκολ στον αγώνα με την Μάιντς, βρήκε δίχτυα με άψογο αριστερό σουτ μέσα από την περιοχή. Το πρώτο ημίχρονο έκλεισε με τον Θεοδωρόπουλο να πραγματοποιεί δύσκολη απόκρουση σε μακρινό σουτ του Ζάχαβι.

Ο νεαρός τερματοφύλακας του Αστέρα ήταν σταθερός και στο δεύτερο μέρος στο οποίο πραγματοποίησε καλές επεμβάσεις κυρίως σε μακρινά σουτ των ποδοσφαιριστών της Μακάμπι.

Το δεύτερο μέρος άρχισε ιδανικά για την ομάδα του Στάικου Βεργέτη! Ο Ζησόπουλος με κοντινή προβολή μετά από σουτ του Μάσα έστειλε την μπάλα στα δίχτυα του Χουάν Πάμπλο και το Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης πήρε φωτιά.

Η εμφάνιση του Αστέρα ήταν πειστική και αυτό είναι που μετρά περισσότερο από το 2-0 ενόψει της ρεβάνς με την Μακάμπι στην Κύπρο.

MVP:

Πολλοί από τον Αστέρα διεκδικούν αυτή τη θέση. Ο Μάσα, όμως, ως σκόρερ αλλά ο παίκτης που έδωσε την ασίστ στο 2-0, θα κερδίσει στο νήμα.

Αδύναμος κρίκος:

Ο Ζάχαβι της Μάκαμπι ήταν ο ποδοσφαιριστής που στον Αστέρα υπολόγιζαν πιο πολύ από τον αντίπαλο, ωστόσο κινήθηκε σε χαμηλά επίπεδα η απόδοση του.

Σχόλιο αγώνα:

Ο Αστέρας δεν δείχνει να έχει ταβάνι εφέτος. Ουσιαστικό παιχνίδι για ακόμη μια φορά με πολλές στιγμές εντυπωσιακού επιθετικού παιχνιδιού. Το 2-0 θα μπορούσε να είναι και 3-0 ή 4-0… Η μεσοεπιθετική γραμμή των Αρκάδων και το σύστημα χωρίς καθαρόαιμο φορ, αλλά με πολλούς μεσοεπιθετικούς ταιριάζει γάντι στην ομάδα.

Η Μίντιλαντ πάγωσε τη Λεωφόρο, αλλά ο μέγας Μάρκους Μπερκ έκανε χατ-τρικ σε 24 λεπτά και χάρη στο τελικό 4-1 ο Παναθηναϊκός πήρε σαφές προβάδισμα πρόκρισης στα πλέι οφ του Europa League.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός παρατάχθηκε σε διάταξη 4-3-2-1 με τους Νίκο Καρέλη-Θανάση Ντίνα πίσω από τον Μάρκους Μπεργκ και τον Νταβίντ Μέντες σε ρόλο στόπερ εξαιτίας της απουσίας του Γιώργου Κουτρουμπή.

Οι παίκτες του Γιάννη Αναστασίου μπήκαν φορτσάτοι και πίεσαν για το γρήγορο γκολ, το άγγιξαν στο 5ο λεπτό όταν ο Καρέλης ολιγώρησε απέναντι στον Γιάκομπ Χάουγκαρντ, αλλά η ομάδα που σκόραρε πρώτη ήταν η Μίντιλαντ.

Συγκεκριμένα με τη συμπλήρωση 13 λεπτών αγώνα, ο Γέσπερ Λάουριντσεν εκτέλεσε ένα μακρινό φάουλ, η μπάλα έσκασε στον αγωνιστικό χώρο, πέρασε απ’ όλους, αιφνιδίασε τον Στέφανο Κοτσόλη και κατέληξε στα δίχτυα του “τριφυλλιού”.

Το γκολ αυτό λειτούργησε αφυπνιστικά για τους “πράσινους”, οι οποίοι ενέτειναν την πίεσή τους και χάρη στους Καρέλη-Μπεργκ ανέτρεψε τα δεδομένα μέσα σε λίγα λεπτά. Στο 20′ ο πρώτος κέρδισε πέναλτι κι ο δεύτερος ισοφάρισε, στο 24′ ο Κρητικός επιθετικός έκανε το γύρισμα από αριστερά κι ο Σουηδός “ξαναχτύπησε” με εξ επαφής πλασέ.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός δεν άφησε το γκάζι, προκειμένου να κλειδώσει τη νίκη και δικαιώθηκε. Ο Μπεργκ βρέθηκε σε πολύ καλή μέρα και η χαμένη ευκαιρία του 41ου λεπτού δεν τον πτόησε. Αντ’ αυτού, εκμεταλλεύθηκε με τον πλέον ιδανικό τρόπο μία υπέροχη σέντρα του Κώστα Τριανταφυλλόπουλου από αριστερά και έκανε χατ-τρικ.

Εξίσου φορτσάτοι ήταν οι Κυπελλούχοι Ελλάδας και στις αρχές του δευτέρου ημιχρόνου, αλλά ούτε ο Καρέλης ούτε ο Μπεργκ κατάφεραν να βρουν δίχτυα στα τετ-α-τετ τους. Τα πράγματα έγιναν ακόμη καλύτερα για τους “πράσινους” στο 58ο λεπτό, όταν αποβλήθηκε με δεύτερη κίτρινη ο Έρικ Σβιατσένκο (η Μίντιλαντ ξέμεινε από κεντρικούς αμυντικούς αφού και ο Φράνσις Ντίκο συμπλήρωσε κάρτες)

Μία απερίσκεπτη ενέργεια του Τριανταφυλλόπουλου στο 81ο λεπτό χάλασε για λίγο τη διάθεση των φίλων του Παναθηναϊκού, καθώς αποβλήθηκε επειδή χρησιμοποίησε άνευ λόγου τον αγκώνα του για να σπρώξει αντίπαλο, αλλά το αυτογκόλ του Λαούριντσεν στο 89′ αποτέλεσε κερασάκι στην τούρτα της εμφατικής “πράσινης” νίκης.

MVP

Ο Μάρκους Μπεργκ. Έβαλε τρία γκολ και είχε συμμετοχή στο τέταρτο. Δεν χρειάζεται κάτι άλλο…

Αδύναμος κρίκος

Ο Έρικ Σβιατσένκο. Υπέπεσε στο πέναλτι που ο Παναθηναϊκός ισοφάρισε και αποβλήθηκε στο 58ο λεπτό.

Σχόλιο

Η άμυνα του Παναθηναϊκού αντιμετώπισε αρκετές δυσκολίες κι αυτό είναι κάτι που πρέπει να ανησυχεί τον Γιάννη Αναστασίου παρά το τελικό 4-1. Guangzhou Evergrande coach Marcello Lippi sensationally stormed out of a media conference following their shock 1-0 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers but not before unleashing a heated attack towards the referee and Wanderers’ midfielder Vitor Saba.

The first-leg quarter-final defeat to the Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium will go down as an historic moment for the 66-year-old World Cup and Serie A winning coach who ran on to the field to protest the dismissal of two of his players in the late stages of the game before erupting in the post-match press conference, attacking Emirati referee Mohammed Abdulla Hassan Mohamed.

The Italian coach did not hide his anger as he ranted to the media about his dismay at the officiating of the match and the behaviour of some of the Wanderers’ players before walking out of the press conference without fielding a single question, leaving his two translators to relay his tirade.

Lippi criticised the referee for missing an alleged hand-ball in the box in the first half that would’ve given the reigning champions an early penalty as well as another foul by Daniel Mullen that he believes should have warranted a second yellow-card. Mohamed awarded Evergrande the foul but gave Mullen a talking-to rather than a dismissal.

“To be honest the first was a little bit far away but the second [red card] was really close to me so I saw it. I also saw that in the during of the match number 33 [Mullen] had to go for a second yellow card…. But I don’t know why the referee didn’t see this. Also in the first half we had a good chance to score and there was a handball in the opening and also the referee didn’t see it,” Lippi said.

“I’ve been in every competition in the world – the World Cup, European Champions League, Club World Championships – everything. I know it’s wrong to go on the field, but at the first moment I just wanted to ask the referee why  – But he talked to me like a child – I also tried to apologised to the ref, I knocked on the door [after the game] and I tried to say it wasn’t in protest, I wanted information on this.”

Lippi was critical of the Wanderers new Brazilian playmaker, Vitor Saba, who he accused of diving. Lippi was seen to have grabbed hold of Saba during a chaotic on-field protest involving the entire Guangzhou Evergrande bench.

“Number 10 with the beard, he played in Italy. It’s not good in football to be falling down and to be so fake, not in the champions league,” Lippi said.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic was puzzled when he heard of Lippi’s tirade, saying his opponent had nothing to complain about.

“I don’t know what he’s upset about,” he said. “That’s his interpretation but the referee has made a decision. Their coaches can not go on the pitch, I’m sure if I went on the pitch I would’ve been sent off so I can’t condone their coaches going on the pitch. We all disagree with decisions that referees make, we voice our opinion from the sideline but we don’t go on the pitch and man-handle a player.”

Meanwhile, the Wanderers are expected to announce their fifth and final visa-player for next year with the signing of Nigerian left-back Seyi Adeleke set to be confirmed on Thursday.

The signing of the 22-year-old defender effectively ends any chances of the club signing a high-profile foreign marquee to replace Shinji Ono.

Adeleke arrives from Serie A club Lazio where he spent three seasons but did not make a senior appearance as he spent the bulk of his career loaned out to smaller clubs. He spent two seasons in the lower leagues of Italy with Salernitana and Pergolettese as well as a season in Switzerland with FC Biel-Bienne.

Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has moved to broaden the base of international players ahead of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup by selecting a group of new faces for the matches against Belgium and Saudi Arabia in September.

The 20-man squad contains four uncapped players in Brad Smith, Chris Herd, Trent Sainsbury and Bailey Wright as well as Hyundai A-League young guns Terry Antonis and Tomi Juric.

Robbie Kruse, Carl Valeri and Josh Brillante have been recalled to the Socceroos squad along with 12 members of the 2014 FIFA World Cup final squad, including captain Mile Jedinak and talisman Tim Cahill.

After naming the squad, Postecoglou declared Socceroos selections would continue to be bold as he builds a broader base of international players in Australia’s pursuit of becoming the best team in Asia.

“The next series of games for us are really important to broaden the base and depth so we’re going to be pretty bold in the way we select our squads and give some people an opportunity,” Postecoglou said.

“After the World Cup campaign we had a break and I had a bit of a chance to think about everything that transpired over the last six to eight months, culminating in the World Cup.

“One thing that came out, that was evident to me, is that we need to broaden our base and get some depth in various positions in our squad.

“From our perspective these games are a chance to expose some young players to international football and hopefully create some depth in areas we’re light on.

“We want a really strong squad for the Asian Cup and we are only going to get that if we have a look at some more players.”

One player that fits Postecoglou’s blueprint to broaden the base is left-sided player Brad Smith, who has been called into the Socceroos squad for the first time after making his English Premier League debut last year for Liverpool.

“Brad’s a player we have been monitoring since I’ve been in the job and he plays in a position where we don’t have a great deal of depth. He plays left back and left side and he’s quick,” Postecoglou said.

“Brad’s a young player who is making his way in the football world. He’s contracted to Liverpool Football Club and obviously been loaned out to Swindon to get some games under his belt.

“Brad’s played for the England U21s as recently as a couple of months ago but he’s very committed to playing for Australia and after having a chat to him we are really keen to get him in the green and gold and give him an opportunity.”

Postecoglou acknowledged injuries ruled out Rhys Williams, Curtis Good, Tom Rogic, Matthew Spiranovic, Matt McKay and Ivan Franjic with experienced campaigners Mark Bresciano and Josh Kennedy still in line for matches in October and November ahead of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.”

Bondi man Cyril Baldock has set the record for the oldest person to swim the English Channel.

The 70-year-old Bondi Surf Life Saving Club member completed the swim between England and France in 12 hours and 45 minutes on Wednesday (local time).

It was his second Channel swim, after first completing the test – considered the ‘Everest of swimming’ – in 1985, when he became the fifth Australian to do so.

After finishing his swim overnight he posted on Twitter: “Support from home has been overwhelming – thanks to everyone for following our journey”.

Mr Baldock told the ABC his dream to break the world record began when his mentor and coach, Des Renford, had a heart attack.

Described as “the king of the channel”, Renford had wanted to be the oldest person to achieve the record.

“Des wanted to have a crack at that but obviously it was never going to be,” Mr Baldock said.

“I told Des that when I got to that age I’d have a go at it. But little did I know over that 30-year period the oldest went up 10 years, so I had to wait a while.”

Mr Baldock said he would not have done the swim again if it was not for the record.

“There’s no way that I’d attempt the English Channel just to swim it a second time. I’ve done it, I was only the fifth Australian to do it back then, but to be the oldest it’s an enormous challenge. It’s something that very few people can ever achieve,” he said.

However Mr Baldock’s record may be short-lived, because 73-year-old Brisbane woman Irene Keel is also attempting the swim this week.

Mr Baldock’s training consisted of around 40 kilometres of swimming each week, including five pool sessions and a long open water swim on a Saturday.

The English Channel is 34km straight across but it is very rare for a swimmer to cover it in under 40km.

Mr Baldock’s coach Vladimir Mravec specialises in preparing people for marathon swims like the English Channel.

This year, 12 of his squad members are attempting the feat.

So far seven have been successful, including Sydney’s Stuart Johnson, who was attempting to be only the fourth person to swim three laps of the Channel continuously.

Johnson managed two-and-a-half laps but decided to retire after 30 hours in the water, tired and close to hypothermia.

“My role as coach is take his momentum and make the momentum live,” Mravec said.

It is this momentum that not only helped Mr Baldock be best prepared for the Channel swim but also in other areas of his life.

“It’s helped my fitness, I’ve got five grandkids and I’m able to do things with them that a lot of 70-year-olds couldn’t do,” Mr Baldock said in the lead-up to the swim.

“Swimming is the ultimate sport for fitness because you’re under pressure all the time, you’re breathing all the time.”

Mr Baldock has lost a number of friends to skin cancer and is raising money for the Melanoma Institute of Australia.
