When the news that South Melbourne had finally secured the NPLV title came to light, the club’s board was conveniently in a meeting.

President Leo Athanasakis says all the meeting’s agenda went out the door very quickly when they discovered the Knights had scored a late goal against second on the ladder, Oakleigh Cannons.

Their 1-0 loss to the Melbourne Knights on Wednesday meant there weren’t enough games for the Cannons to catch up and overtake South. It was game over for the Cannons.

“We had no expectations, because Melbourne had just won the Cup on Sunday and they really had nothing to play for, but to their credit they’re a fighting team,” Athanasakis tells Neos Kosmos.

“Straight away my phone started and Twitter went into overload, I got inundated.

“The players wanted to celebrate, so we went out into the city till five in the morning.”

One person absent at the celebrations was the commander-in-chief of the team, coach Chris Taylor. Always keeping his mind on the next match, Taylor says he switched his phone off to avoid the spotlight and keep his mind clear for Sunday’s match.

“I had my phone switched off, I switch off from games, I can’t change what the result is unless we’re playing, it’s just business as usual,” he tells Neos Kosmos. “Rather than over celebrate we need to focus on what we need to do.”

South Melbourne can proudly say their change of fate is thanks to Taylor’s philosophy.

Coming in to what was a flatlining team, Taylor instilled a new culture in the club and recruited players he knew would aspire for greatness, not choose the club to end their careers.

“He raised the Titanic,” Athanasakis says. “When he arrived, we had hit rock bottom as a team and in the space of 18 months he’s turned a fledgling team into a championship winning team.

“He’s shown us what type of culture it takes for a football team to win a championship.”

Taylor felt that ego had to be absent from the pitch to make the club competitive again.

“Obviously South Melbourne has a very proud history, we’re used to having top players, we just tried to change that a little bit, to make sure no one is bigger than the club, that the club comes first,” he says.

Now with a young team moulded to his philosophy, he’s seeing players striving for greatness, striving to get a chance at the A-League and beyond.

Top goalscorer for the NPLV is South Melbourne’s own Milos Lujic, keeping his family’s legacy proud.

He’s hoping to get picked up for the A-League next season and has definitely done a lot to get noticed.

But despite the championship, the job isn’t done.

Two games still remain, with the blockbuster against Oakleigh Cannons looming on Sunday.

It’ll be a tough match for Miron Bleiberg’s boys, but toppling South Melbourne on the night they get their silverware might be reason enough to get the team excited.

Instead of a finals series, South Melbourne will now enter into the NPL playoffs with the other state champions.

Their first match on the weekend of September 20-21 will be against South Hobart.

Taylor is now setting his sites on the NPL finals series, using all his upcoming matches to prepare for the best of the states.

Even with the cup almost in his hands, Taylor isn’t content with just one title.

“I’d like to be national champion, not Victorian champion,” he admits.

“If we focus on it we’ve got a good chance of going all the way.”

Getting the players to come to the same conclusion might not be so easy.

They will be going up against some of the best teams outside of the A-League so they can’t afford complacency.

After their Hobart match, South Melbourne will most likely face a NSW or South Australian team.

It’s the Sydney sides Taylor is more worried about.

“You’ve got to respect the sides from Sydney, they’ve got a few players who have played for Sydney FC, ex-A-league players,” he says.

“We’re a fairly young side, you’ve got to say that they’re probably more experienced.”

But as a South Melbourne faithful, hope never fades for Taylor.

“I’d back us any day on any team,” he says.

Now secure at Lakeside Stadium for another 40 years, the future looks bright for the Greek Australian team.

They have another trophy to go along with their four national titles and nine state ones.

Good thing they’re building a new museum to house everything.

Η εκτίμηση που έχει ο Κλαούντιο Ρανιέρι στο πρόσωπο του Γιώργου Σαμαρά είναι δεδομένη. Εννοείται πως τον πιστεύει σαν ποδοσφαιριστή, αλλά και σαν άνθρωπο αφού ξέρει τι χαρακτήρας είναι και πως λειτουργεί μέσα στην Εθνική ομάδα.

Το βράδυ της Κυριακής, απέναντι στη Ρουμανία, στο άδειο λόγω τιμωρίας “Γ. Καραϊσκάκης”, ο Ελληνας επιθετικός της Γουέστ Μπρομ θα αγωνιστεί με μια σημαντική διαφορά. Αυτή είναι στη φανέλα και αναφερόμαστε στο νούμερο. Το 7 που φόραγε μέχρι τώρα ο Σαμαράς ανήκει στον Φορτούνη. Ο “Sam” θα φορά το “βαρύ” νούμερο 10, αυτό που φορούσε μέχρι να αποχωρήσει από το αντιπροσωπευτικό μας συγκρότημα ο Γιώργος Καραγκούνης.

Η απόφαση ανήκει αποκλειστικά τον Κλαούντιο Ρανιέρι. Ο ομοσπονδιακός τεχνικός ζήτησε τη λίστα με τα νούμερα που φορούσαν οι ποδοσφαιριστές στο πρόσφατο Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο. Μπήκε στο γραφείο του, έμεινε εκεί για αρκετή ώρα και στη συνέχεια βγήκε μοιράζοντας εκ νέου τα νούμερα στους ποδοσφαιριστές που έχει καλέσει για το ματς με τους Ρουμάνους. Ο Ιταλός ενημέρωσε τον Γιώργο Σαμαρά πως θα φορά το νούμερο 10 στην πλάτη, δείγμα της εμπιστοσύνης που έχει στον διεθνή στράικερ, αλλά και στις ηγετικές του ικανότητες εντός και εκτός γηπέδου.

BY HIS own admission Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is no “ray of sunshine” when his team loses, but he is confident of a change of fortune – and mood- when they take on Saudi Arabia in London on Tuesday morning.  

Since he took over the side 11 months ago Australia has recorded just one win and a draw against four losses, with a total score-sheet of five goals for, 12 against.

For a man who hates losing as much as Postecoglou they are not statistics that bring too many smiles and he is not one to hide his frustration, as Belgian journalists found last week.

After Postecoglou reacted badly to his suggestion that the Socceroos might be “afraid” of facing Belgium in Liege, a local reporter asked the Australian media contingent, “your coach, is he always like that?”

Only when his team doesn’t win, came the reply, which is to say, most of the time.

But all going to plan, that should change at Fulham FC’s home ground Craven Cottage, on Tuesday.

Unlike most of the teams Australia has played in recent months, Saudi Arabia is not a world power. In fact, at number 83 they are ranked four spots below the Socceroos.

Asked on the eve of the match whether a win would reduce pressure on him personally, Postecoglou gave a rare insight into his feelings.

“It’s not pressure,” he said. “I’m not happy, I don’t like losing. I don’t have tell you I’m not a ray of sunshine to be around but I’ve got a real focus on what our goals are and come January when we play in the Asian Cup I want us flying mate and that’s what’s driving me at the moment.

“I think I said after the Belgium game, sometimes on the road to success you’ve got to go to some uncomfortable places. That’s where we are at the moment but my job is to make sure we stay the course. If I start thinking about the pressure on me – not that I ever do – what are the players going to think?”

It has been said that sporting coaches are salesmen – they sell belief. It is a word that Postecoglou uses often as he talks about taking the Socceroos in a new direction.

So far they have responded well, but the coach knows that the players need some success on the scoreboard to keep any doubts at bay.

“It’s a balance because when you’re not getting the rewards in terms of wins, it can knock your belief but looking at the players I think the belief is still there,” he said. “They think we are moving in the right direction. I know we are.

“All these games are building blocks to the Asian Cup. Along the way you’ve got to give the players rewards. You can’t just keep not getting rewards in terms of winning games because ultimately that’s where the real belief is.

“At the moment I don’t get a sense that they’re losing that belief.”

Certainly from the outside looking in they appear to be a happy group, eager to buy what Postecoglou and his support staff are selling.

As Mark Milligan, a veteran of three World Cups and five Socceroo coaching regimes put it, “the morale is pretty good”.

“It is difficult,” he said. “We went down 2-nil to Belgium the other night but they are a very, very good side and we still went out there and tried to do things our way so I think the belief in what we’re doing is definitely there.

“I think the structure has been put in place. In previous times where we might have had a few losses, even this time last year when we had a couple of very heavy losses, there was nothing to fall back on.

“We didn’t feel there was a certain structure to get us out of it. Everything now is so structured, the way we want to do things is quite clear. I think we know if we fall back on that and we do it properly that will drag us out of the results we have been having.”

Those words would no doubt bring a rare smile even to Postecoglou, but he says the Saudis will present their own challenges to a team that has played five of the world’s top ten teams in the past year.

“I’m not foolish enough to think there are any easy games but hopefully this game we will be able to impose ourselves a little earlier and be able to control the game,” he said.

“That produces different challenges because if we’ve got the ball a little bit more and are more comfortable in certain areas, then the expectation is that we have to find more opportunities than we have been able to against the best opposition.

“We’re going to have to lift our intensity in different areas on the park where we haven’t had to in the past because we’ve played against teams that didn’t let us do that.

“I will be interested in seeing how the players respond to that.”

And if they don’t get the result that they and their coach are hoping for? According to Postecoglou, it will be business as usual.

“I’m leading the ship and I’ve got to show that where we are is exactly where we want to be,” he said. “As I said, in time this 12 months period, as challenging as it’s been – and we’ve thrown some ridiculous challenges at a new group of players – will be good for us.”

“Έχουμε πολύ καλές ομάδες στον όμιλο και πρέπει να σεβαστούμε όλες τις ομάδες. Η Ρουμανία ίσως έχει μία διάθεση για ρεβάνς μετά τον αποκλεισμό για το Μουντιάλ. Είναι μία ομάδα πιο προετοιμασμένη σε φυσική κατάσταση και έχει έμπειρους και νέους παίκτες”.

Για την απουσία του Μούτου

“Είναι σαν γιος μου. Είμαι χαρούμενος γιατί είναι ένας ικανότατος ποδοσφαιριστής Μαρικά και  Ρατ είναι πολύ καλοί επαγγελματίες. Όλοι είναι καλοί και έμπειροι παίκτες. Δε θέλω να ξεχωρίσω κάποιον”.

Για το ποιον ξεχωρίζει από τη Ρουμανία

“Είναι μία καλή ομάδα. Έχει έμπειρους ποδοσφαιριστές. Δεν θα έλεγα κάποιον συγκεκριμένα. Είναι δύσκολο να πω ποιος είναι ο καλύτερος. Ήμουν τυχερός που προπόνησα τους Μούτου και Κίβου και δεν μπορώ να πω κάτι παραπάνω”.

Για το αν υπήρχε χρόνος να αλλάξει το στυλ της ομάδας και να γίνει καλή προετοιμασία

“Σε τέσσερις μόλις προπονήσεις είναι δύσκολο να αλλάξεις κάτι, σε επίπεδο τακτικής. Σίγουρα θα προστεθούν στοιχεία, στη συνέχεια. Δε νομίζω ότι πρέπει να αλλάξουν και πάρα πολλά πράγματα. Ρεχάγκελ και Σάντος είχαν μια επιτυχημένη πορεία.”.

Για την εμπειρία του ως ομοσπονδιακός προπονητής

“Είναι μία εμπειρία αυτή του ομοσπονδιακού προπονητή. Δεν έχεις την ευκαιρία να προπονείς καθημερινά τους ποδοσφαιριστές σου, αλλά ήθελα να τη ζήσω αυτή την εμπειρία”.

Για την απουσία του κόσμου

“Πιστεύω ότι η απουσία του κόσμου είναι κακή γενικά για το θέαμα. Οι παίκτες είναι όπως οι ηθοποιοί και θέλουν το κοινό τους. Μπορεί η απουσία του κόσμου να γίνει πλεονέκτημα για τη Ρουμανία αλλά γνωρίζουμε την κατάσταση και θα την αποδεχτούμε”.

Για τη σπουδαιότητα της αναμέτρησης και την ετοιμότητα των ομάδων

“Το πλεονέκτημα ανήκει στη Ρουμανία. Η Ρουμανία είναι πιο έτοιμη από εμάς. Πάντοτε το πρώτο παιχνίδι του ομίλου είναι και το πιο δύσκολο”.

Για το πώς αισθάνεται στο νέο ξεκίνημά του στην Εθνική μας

“Είναι μία νέα ατμόσφαιρα, ένα νέο κλίμα Ήθελα πολύ να είμαι εδώ. Βρήκα μία πολύ καλή ομάδα, που έχει διάθεση να παίξει ποδόσφαιρο. Πρέπει να αξιολογήσω και τα θετικά και τα αρνητικά. Ξέρω ότι οι παίκτες μου θα δώσουν το 120% για να κερδίσουν. θα ήθελα να δω μια ομάδα συμπαγής, που να ακολουθεί τις οδηγίες μου κατά την προπόνηση”.

Για το τι περιμένει και τι θα τον άφηνε ικανοποιημένο, πέρα από το αποτέλεσμα

“Θα ήμουν χαρούμενος με τη νίκη. Πέρα από αυτό, θέλω να δω μία ομάδα που να ακολουθεί τις οδηγίες που έχουμε δώσει κατά την προπόνηση”.

Για το χαρακτηριστικό του Έλληνα ποδοσφαιριστή με μία λέξη

“Εδώ μπορώ να μιλήσω μόνο για τους παίκτες μου. Θέλουμε καλή φυσική κατάσταση και να είναι ανθεκτική στην κούραση. Να έχει όρεξη για δουλειά. Αυτά είναι τα στοιχεία που θα ήθελα”.

Για τον αγώνα και τα πλάνα του

“Πρέπει να είμαστε υπομονετικοί. Δεν μπορείς να φέρεις την επανάσταση σε λίγες ημέρες και δε θα ήταν και έξυπνο αυτό. Θα ακολουθήσουμε την πετυχημένη συνταγή”.

Για το αν η Ελλάδα είναι αουτσάιντερ

“Όπως είπα, δεν μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε πολλά. Δεν υπάρχουν παίκτες ο Κατσουράνης, ο Καραγκούνης και τώρα ο Μανιάτης. Η Ρουμανία θα βρει μπροστά της μία νέα ομάδα. Ως εκεί όμως. Πιστεύω πως αύριο θα έχουμε τη θέληση για να κάνουμε μία θετική εμφάνιση”.

Για τους Μήτρογλου και Σαμαρά

“Όλοι οι ποδοσφαιριστές είναι έμπειροι και θέλω να τους έχω. Έχω χάσει ήδη τρεις και δεν μπορώ να χάσω και άλλους. Θα κάνω τις επιλογές μου σήμερα με βάση συγκεκριμένα κριτήρια. Πρώτα από όλα τη φυσική κατάσταση. Ύστερα ποια βοήθεια μπορούν να δώσουν. Είναι νωρίς να μιλήσουμε για αυτό και προσπαθώ να τη βοηθήσω με τον τρόπο που μπορώ”.

Για το τι θα πει στην ομάδα πριν μπει στο γήπεδο

“Όλοι είναι έμπειροι παίκτες . Έχω χάσει τους τρεις που είπα και δε θέλω να χάσω άλλους. Τα κριτήρια για τις επιλογές μου είναι η φυσική κατάσταση, η βοήθεια που μπορούν να δώσουν στην ομάδα και φυσικά ο αντίπαλος. Αυτή ομάδα είναι πολύ ισχυρή. Αποτελείται από πολεμιστές, αντιπροσωπεύουν τον Έλληνα. Πιστεύω θα είμαστε ενωμένοι και αυτό είναι το σημαντικό”.

Για αν ανακοινώνει ενδεκάδα πριν τον αγώνα ή το μαθαίνουν πρώτα οι παίκτες

“Ως αστείο είπα πως θα παίξουν όποιοι προλάβουν να μπουν στα αποδυτήρια πρώτοι. Δεν θα πω κάτι παραπάνω όμως. Έχει ήδη πλεονέκτημα η Ρουμανία. Ας μην της δώσουμε και άλλο”.

Για το αν προσπαθήσει πρώτα απ’ όλα για το μηδέν στην άμυνα

“Μέχρι να γνωρίσω όλη την ομάδα δε θέλω να χάσουμε την ταυτότητα. Έχω μία επιθετική νοοτροπία. Θέλω να προσέξω πως θα κρατήσουμε το μηδέν στην άμυνα, αλλά θέλω να βάζουμε και γκολ. Ως προπονητής και άνθρωπος θέλω να νικάω. Αν καταλάβω ότι δε μπορώ, προσπαθώ να μην χάσω”.

Για το ότι δεν υπάρχει μεταφραστής στις προπονήσεις

“Σε αυτή τη συνέντευξη ακούσατε κάτι από εμένα ή από τον μεταφραστή; Έχω αρχίσει και μαθαίνω κάποιες λέξεις στα ελληνικά. Οι παίκτες μου, μιλούν αγγλικά και αρκετοί ιταλικά. Ήδη ξέρω κάποιες λέξεις. Παίξε γρήγορα. Κάντε 1-2. Τα ξέρω”.

Φώτης Κατσικάρης και Νίκος Ζήσης μίλησαν για το κρίσιμο παιχνίδι με την Σερβία για τους “16” του Μουντομπάσκετ της Ισπανίας.

Αναλυτικά όσα είπε ο ομοσπονδιακός τεχνικός:

“Το κομμάτι του άγχους και της πίεσης υπάρχει, αν λειτουργήσουμε όμως με τον ίδιο τρόπο θα πάμε καλά. Το άγχος είναι ωραίο αρκεί να μην υπάρχουν αν. Στο τεχνικό κομμάτι, τα παιδιά το έχουν αφομοιώσει. Τα παιχνίδια θα κριθούν από την άμυνα, στις λεπτομέρειες και στα ριμπάουντ”

“Θα πρέπει να λειτουργήσουμε με ομαδικό πνεύμα. Δεν έχουμε τους δολοφονικούς σουτέρ, αλλά έχουμε παίκτες που μπορούν να βάλουν τα μακρινά σουτ. Στα ριμπάουντ επίσης θα χρειαστεί καλή δουλειά. Ό,τι κάνουμε θα πρέπει να το κάνουμε με ταχύτητα. Σε έναν αγώνα μπορεί να γίνουν πραγματικά τα πάντα. Αυτά τα πέντε παιχνίδια που δώσαμε, έγιναν όπως έγιναν”.

“Οι ρόλοι μας δεν είναι εύκολοι, ρωτήστε και τα παιδιά. Αυτό που προσπαθούμε να κάνουμε είναι να προβλέπουμε τις δυσκολίες. Οι ομάδες όμως είναι ζωντανοί οργανισμοί και δεν μπορούμε να τα προβλέπουμε όλα. Το καλό είναι όλοι έχουν την ευθύνη. Όλοι την έχουν ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο παίζει ο καθένας. Πρέπει να είμαστε ψύχραιμοι και έτοιμοι. Δεν είναι ένα παιχνίδι που λες και να χάσω, δεν πειράζει”.

“Οι Σέρβοι έχουν παίκτες με ταλέντο. Ο Τεόντοσιτς είναι απρόβλεπτος, δημιουργός και εκτελεστής. Ο Μπιέλιτσα πολύ επικίνδυνος και στο ένα εναντίον ενός και στο σουτ. Και ο Μπογκντάνοβιτς είναι ένας πολύ καλός σκόρερ. Σαν ομάδα είναι πολύ σκληρή. Οι διαιτητές αφήνουν τις επαφές στα χέρια και αυτό είναι καλό. Είμαστε προετοιμασμένοι”.

“Θα πρέπει να είμαστε προσεκτικοί με την μπάλα. Ο μέσος όρος των λαθών μας είναι ικανοποιητικός. Δεν αποκλείεται οι Σέρβοι να θέλουν να χαλάσουν το δικό μας παιχνίδι. Ο Τζόρτζεβιτς και το τιμ του είναι πολύ ικανοί. Εμείς έχουμε ομάδα που ο καθένας μπορεί να σκοράρει, άλλωστε αυτό το είχα πει. Θα προσπαθήσουν να περιορίσουν τις επιλογές μας στο τρέξιμο”.

Από την πλευρά των παικτών, ο αρχηγός της Εθνικής ομάδας, Νίκος Ζήσης, χαρακτήρισε “τελικό” την αναμέτρηση της Κυριακής.

“Σήμερα ουσιαστικά αρχίζει η προετοιμασία μας μετά από μία μέρα ξεκούρασης. Παίζουμε με μία ομάδα με μεγάλη μπασκετική παιδεία. H προϊστορία είναι περισσότερο για τους δημοσιογράφους. Η Σερβία θα είναι έτοιμη για πόλεμο, θα προσπαθήσει να μας εκνευρίσει και να μας βγάλει από το ρυθμό μας. Είναι ένας τελικός και όλα μπορούν να γίνουν. Οτιδήποτε μπορεί να τον κρίνει”.

“Είμαστε χαρούμενοι που συνδυάζουμε τις νίκες με ωραίο μπάσκετ. Αν χάσουμε όμως κανείς δεν θα το θυμάται. Θέλουμε να ζήσουμε το παρόν. To καλύτερο κίνητρο είναι η Εθνική και το νοκ άουτ της αναμέτρησης. Υπάρχει τεράστια θέληση ειδικά μετά τις πρόσφατες αποτυχίες”.

Greece will play its first qualifying match for the UEFA Euro 2016 competition against Romania on Sunday.

Not qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2016 competition would be a huge failure, Greece coach Claudio Ranieri has said.

“Not making it to the finals would be a disaster – it’s that simple,” the coach said when naming his squad for the qualifiers.

Greece’s history with the competition is enough to put a heap of pressure on the players and the coach, and Ranieri has been very honest about the situation.

“My predecessors did a great job with Greece,” he says.

“Now it’s up to me. It won’t be easy.”

He faces his first test as a coach when the newly minted team goes up against Romania on Sunday.

Last time Greece played Romania, it was qualifying for the World Cup. It came out with an aggregate of 2-4 thanks to Kostas Mitroglou’s goals and secured their spot. Romania on the other hand will be vying for blood as it hopes to forbid Greece from getting another spot from them.

The national basketball team finished top of its World Championship pool with a perfect record scoring its fifth win in as many games as it downed Argentina 79-71 on Thursday in Seville. Its next game will be in the round of 16 against Serbia.

The players of coach Fotis Katsikaris kept the Argentineans at bay throughout the game, leading by as many as 19 points in the third period (52-33) with a great all-around display that was based on dominance in rebounds and a great shooting rate.

Even when Argentina made a last-gasp effort in the final quarter and reduced its arrears to just two points (70-68), Greece responded and made the game safe to top its pool two points ahead of Croatia and Argentina.

The Greeks grabbed 16 more rebounds than Argentina (41 to 25) and produced eight blocks to zero against a team that was brimming with experience from the NBA.

Nick Calathes was the top scorer for Greece with 18 points, but Yiannis Bourousis was amazing, scoring 16 points and collecting 15 rebounds.

Serbia will now be Greece’s opponent in the round of 16 in Madrid on Sunday, in the first knockout phase, as the Serbs finished fourth in their group.

Η Ελλάδα έκανε τα εύκολα – δύσκολα απέναντι στην Αργεντινή, αλλά στο τέλος ήταν αυτή που πανηγύρισε τη σπουδαία νίκη (71-79) και μαζί την πρώτη θέση του ομίλου.

Η Εθνική ομάδα στις αρχές του τέταρτου δεκαλέπτου είδε τους Λατινοαμερικάνους να μειώνουν ακόμα και στους τρεις πόντους (63-66), αλλά σε εκείνο το σημείο… ξύπνησε ξανά. Πάτησε το πόδι στο γκάζι, έσφιξε στην άμυνα και έκοψε τα όνειρα των Αργεντινών για ανατροπή.

ΤΕΛΙΚΟ ΣΚΟΡ: 71-79

Την αήττητη πορεία της στο Μουντομπάσκετ της Ισπανίας συνεχίζει η Ελλάδα, η οποία επικράτησε 79-71 της Αργεντινής και πήρε την πρώτη θέση στον Β’ όμιλο! Η «επίσημη αγαπημένη» πανηγύρισε για πέμπτη φορά σε ισάριθμα παιχνίδια και στη φάση των «16» θα παίξει την Κυριακή απέναντι στη Σερβία.

Η Εθνική ξεκίνησε ιδανικά το παιχνίδι και κατάφερε να αποκτήσει γρήγορα προβάδισμα δέκα πόντων. Μετά το 2-0 από τον Σκόλα, οι Μπουρούσηε και Παπανικολάου έφεραν το παιχνίδι στο 4-2, για να ακολουθήσει ο Καλάθης με πέντε πόντους και να διαμορφώσει το 9-6. Μετά τη μία εύστοχη βολή του Νοτσιόνι η «επίσημη αγαπημένη» πήρε μπροστά και με επιμέρους σκορ 12-4 έφτασε στο 21-11. Το δεκάλεπτο ολοκληρώθηκε με το σκορ στο 28-16.

Το δεύτερο δεκάλεπτο ξεκίνησε με σερί 6-0 της Αργεντινής (28-22) και την απάντηση του Σλούκα με τρίποντο (31-22). Η παρέα του Σκόλα ροκάνισε περισσότερο τη διαφορά με έξι πόντους του πρώτου σκόρερ του τουρνουά (31-28), όμως η ομάδα του Φώτη Κατσακάρη απάντησε ξανά με λέι απ του Καλάθη και τρίποντο του Μπουρούση (36-28). Η Εθνική κατάφερε να διατηρήσει το προβάδισμα πάνω από τους δέκα πόντους στο 20’, με ένα απίστευτο τρίποντο buzzer beater του Ζήση. Μάλιστα στην προσπάθεια του αρχηγού έγινε φάουλ το οποίο δεν καταλογίστηκε με αποτέλεσμα ο Ζήσης να ξεσπάσει και να επικρατήσει ένταση ανάμεσα στους παίκτες των δύο ομάδων!

Το τρίτο μέρος του αγώνα ξεκίνησε με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. Μπουρούσης, Πρίντεζης και Ζήσης πέτυχε οκτώ αναπάντητους πόντους και προηγήθηκε με 52-33, όμως η Αργεντινή με δικό της 5-0 μείωσε σε 52-38. Τα λεπτά κυλούσαν με την Εθνική να δείχνει να πατά πολύ καλά στα πόδια της και την Αργεντινή να προσπαθεί μάταια να μειώσει. Ο κόπος αποδείχθηκε… μάταιος αφού η Εθνική έκλεισε το δεκάλεπτο στο 64-50 και μπήκε με αέρα… νικητή στο φινάλε του ματς.

Πάντως, ο επίλογος ξεκίνησε με την Αργεντινή να έχει το πόδι πατημένο στο… γκάζι. Στα τρία πρώτα λεπτά η ομάδα της Λατινικής Αμερικής πέτυχε σερί 10-0 και μείωσε σε 64-60, το οποίο έφτασε στο 66-60 με καλάθι του Μπουρούση, που νωρίτερα δέχθηκε τεχνική ποινή. Με καλάθια του Ζήση και του Καλάθη η επιθετική γραμμή πήρε ανάσα, όμως ο Καμπάσο στο 35’ με γκολ-φάουλ μείωσε σε 70-66 και με νέο καλάθι σε 70-68. Κάπου εκεί η καρδιά την ομάδας μίλησε! Δύο εύστοχες βολές του Ζήση, ένα εκπληκτικό κάρφωμα του Παπανικολάου σε αιφνιδιασμό και ένα παλικαρίσιο καλάθι του Μπουρούση με σουτ έφεραν την Ελλάδα και πάλι στο ασφαλές 76-68. Αυτό αποδείχθηκε αρκετό και η Ελλάδα πήρε τη νίκη με το τελικό 79-71.

LIEGE, Belgium – Belgium built on its World Cup momentum with a 2-0 victory over Australia on Thursday in a preparation game for 2016 European Championship qualifying.Belgium turned dominance into a goal in the 18th minute.

First, winger Kevin De Bruyne hit the woodwork and the rebound eventually fell to Dries Mertens, who miscued an angled shot which ricocheted in over goalkeeper Matthew Ryan.

Axel Witsel doubled the score in the 78th with a long-distance drive.Australia played aggressively and was lucky to escape with only one yellow card to Mathew Leckie.”They put (on) a lot of pressure and were very assertive,” Belgium midfielder Steven Defour said.

Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard missed the game because of slight injuries but Vincent Kompany shrugged off a strain and stood at the heart of the Belgian defence, just like he had during the World Cup.

Before the game, Belgium marked the retirement of Daniel Van Buyten, who was the team’s standout defender in Brazil and ended his career at 36.

After four victories, Belgium lost to Argentina in the quarterfinals of the World Cup and coach Marc Wilmots is now looking for a good run at the European Championship in France in two years, when he said he will eye at least a place in the semifinals.

Considering Belgium has a relatively young team and was already ranked fifth in the world, such ambitions are not excessively ambitious.

Belgium was supposed to open its Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in Israel but next week’s game has been postponed until March because of the war in Gaza and the continuing unrest.

Australia lost all three of its group games at the World Cup and has dropped to 79th in the FIFA rankings.
