Συνέχεια στην 3η αγωνιστική της Σούπερ Λιγκ με ενδιαφέροντα παιχνίδια, αν και την προσοχή κλέβει το παιχνίδι του Παναθηναϊκού στη Μυτιλήνη κόντρα στην Καλλονή (20:30).

Νωρίτερα ο Πανιώνιος υποδέχεται τον Αστέρα Τρίπολης (16:00), ενώ στις 18:15 έχουμε τρεις αγώνες, με τα βλέμματα να είναι στραμμένα στο Περιστέρι και τα Γιάννενα, όπου ο Ατρόμητος και ο ΠΑΣ Γιάννινα φιλοξενούν Παναιτωλικό και Skoda Ξάνθη, που μπορούν να κάνουν τη ζημιά μακριά από την έδρα τους.

Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao could make their Old Trafford debuts as a new-look Manchester United take on Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

United have banked on Argentina winger Di Maria, who was signed for a British transfer record of £59.7 million, to inspire a fresh era of success in Manchester. Much is also expected of striker Falcao, who has joined on a season-long loan from Monaco.

Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo have been brought in together with Di Maria and Falcao, and all eyes will be focused on how manager Louis van Gaal can best use the players at his disposal. The Dutchman is confident the arrivals will help United recover from a poor start to the campaign.

“We bought five players and one player is on loan here and maybe we can buy him next season, and that’s Falcao,” Van Gaal said. “We let go [of] 14 players. How to fit in these players is not so difficult, I think, when you let go 14 players and only six players come in.

“They have to perform our philosophy [against QPR] and that philosophy is not so easy to perform. We have seen it already. But the players we have selected [in the transfer window] shall do that better.”

United have yet to win this season, with two Barclays Premier League draws and a loss to Swansea City having been registered together with a shock 4-0 League Cup loss at MK Dons.

The defeat to Swansea came at Old Trafford and Van Gaal, who is without Phil Jones (hamstring), Marouane Felliani (ankle), Chris Smalling (groin), Michael Carrick (ankle) and Ashley Young (knock), will be desperate to avoid a repeat.

Despite the sale of Danny Welbeck to Arsenal, United will expect goals to flow for the remainder of the campaign, with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Falcao available.

QPR sit two places higher than United in the table after a 1-0 win over Sunderland last time out lifted them to 12th. The Loftus Road club are underdogs this weekend but manager Harry Redknapp has urged his side to take the game to United.

“Manchester United [have] got a formidable front-line,” Redknapp said. “It will be interesting to see how they gel.

“They’ve got a top, top team now. We’ve got to go up there and make sure we work hard and give them a really good game. We will be ready for it.”

Joey Barton could miss out with a hamstring problem but QPR, who are set to start former United defender Rio Ferdinand, could hand debuts to new signings Eduardo Vargas and Sandro.

Neymar came off the bench and produced two exquisite finishes from brilliant Lionel Messi assists to give Barcelona a 2-0 win at home to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday and maintain their perfect start to La Liga.

Barca dominated at a sun-drenched Camp Nou but were unable to make a breakthrough until Neymar ran clear onto Messi’s threaded pass and dinked the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz for a 79th-minute lead. Five minutes later, Messi made one of his scintillating runs down the right and clipped the ball across to an unmarked Neymar, who had time to steady himself before sidefooting clinically into the bottom corner.

The Brazil captain is coming back from an ankle injury and the new Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, held him back until the 63rd minute, when he replaced the teenage Spain forward Munir El Haddadi.

Barça, seeking to improve on last season’s second-placed finish to Atlético Madrid, were the only team to win their opening two games and top the table with a perfect nine points and no goals conceded. Atlético play at city rivals Real Madrid later on Saturday in a repeat of last season’s Champions League final, which Real won 4-1.

With just over 80,000 fans thronging Barça’s stadium, Messi was in the starting lineup having shaken off the muscle injury that prevented him joining up with Argentina for international duty this month. The Argentina captain was joined in attack by Pedro and Munir, while playmaker Andrés Iniesta also returned from injury to captain the side.

The Barça players were wearing the yellow and red of the Catalan flag to mark the region’s national day on 11 September and there was a festival atmosphere as the home side carved out much the better chances in the first half. Iraizoz pulled off three fine stops to deny Pedro, Ivan Rakitic and Munir, while at the other end Ander Iturraspe’s low shot in the 28th minute was the first on target against Barça in La Liga this season.

The second half was more of the same, with Iraizoz again doing well to deny Jordi Alba before an unmarked Munir, who earlier had the ball in the net but was ruled narrowly offside, headed straight at the goalkeeper when well placed.

Bilbao have not won at the Camp Nou since the 2001-02 season and were looking good for a point until Neymar gave Barça some extra zip in attack. His connection with Messi did not function as well as hoped in his debut season in Spain but on the evidence of Saturday’s game the South American pair are starting to gel in an ominous sign for Barça’s rivals.

Atletico Madrid gained a measure of revenge for their defeat by Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League final with a derby win away to their rivals.

Reigning La Liga champions Atletico took an early lead at the Bernabeu as Tiago headed in from a corner.

Cristiano Ronaldo, on his return from injury, scored a penalty he had won to bring the teams level soon after.

But Atletico, who had to resist plenty of home pressure, won the game courtesy of Arda Turan’s neat finish.

Prior to the game, Atletico boss Diego Simeone had downplayed his side’s chances of defending their league crown following a summer exodus that saw five key players from last season’s La Liga-conquering team depart the club.

While his current crop of players may lack some of the attacking flair of their predecessors they appear to have quickly picked up the tactical nous and spirit that have become the hallmark of their manager’s teams.

Like the 2013-14 side, this Atletico team are also physically imposing, which they demonstrated throughout and notably in the 10th minute when Tiago made his way to the near post to plant a header into the net from Koke’s corner.

The goal was also further evidence for the critics, whose knives were still sharp from the way they capitulated at Real Sociedad two weeks ago, that this is a Real team who are only quality so long as the ball is heading in the direction of the opposition goal and not their own.

However, this time Real rallied after going behind and with the returning Ronaldo included in their attack they had the firepower to respond.

As he has done on so many occasions, the Portuguese forward created his own scoring opportunity, by tumbling in the box under minimum contact from Guilherme Siquiera, before converting it by sending goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya the wrong way.

Ronaldo was also the supplier of two subsequent chances for Karim Benzema, the first of which the Frenchman ruined with a heavy touch when through on goal, the second a header which drew a superb save from Moya.

Unfortunately, Ronaldo is clearly not fully fit – as demonstrated by the way he faded as a threat – while his attacking companions were woefully off colour.

Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez – combined cost £156m – were peripheral figures throughout, while Toni Kroos was poorly-deployed as a holding midfielder.

But to focus on Real’s inadequacies takes away from Atletico’s performance, which was a master-class in containment and counter-attack.

As the game wore on and Real’s frustration grew, so did the visitors’ belief and after Turan had flashed one shot past the post in the 73rd minute he went one better three minutes later by sweeping home a neat finish past Iker Casillas.

Real huffed and puffed for the remaining 14 minutes, but the Atletico held firm.

Ο Ολυμπιακός χωρίς να ξοδέψει πολλές δυνάμεις, επικράτησε με 3-0 του ΟΦΗ στο “Γ. Καραϊσκάκης” για την 3η αγωνιστική της Super League. Γκολ για highlight από τον “Τσόρι” Ντομίνγκες. Ο Κώστας Μήτρογλου έκανε την επανεμφάνησή του με την ερυθρόλευκη φανέλα.

Με 4-2-3-1 και τους Μιλιβόγεβιτς και Αυλωνίτη να κάνουν το ντεμπούτο τους στη SuperLeague παρέταξε την ομάδα του ο Μίτσελ. Μπροστά ξεκίνησαν οι Ντουρμάζ, Αφελάι και “Τσόρι”, ενώ στη θέση του φορ αγωνίστηκε ο Διαμαντάκος. Ο τεχνικός του ΟΦΗ, Τζενάρο Γκατούζο, επέλεξε ένα αμυντικό 3-4-2-1 προσπαθώντας να θωρακίσει την άμυνά του και να κρατήσει τον Ολυμπιακό μακριά από την εστία του Λόρια.

Από τα πρώτα κιόλας λεπτά φάνηκε ότι ο Ολυμπιακός θα έχει τα ηνία του αγώνα. Οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” είχαν δύο πολύ καλές ευκαιρίες με τον Ντομίνγκες στα πρώτα 15 λεπτά, με τον Λορία να κρατάει το 0-0. Ωστόσο στο 22′ η εστία του ΟΦΗ παραβιάστηκε από ένα δικό του παίκτη. Στη σέντρα του Μαζουακού από τα αριστερά, ο Αντελέγε έκανε μια στραβοκλωτσιά στην προσπάθειά του να διώξει, η μπάλα πήρε ύψος και κατέληξε στο “παραθυράκι” της εστίας του Λορία.

Λίγο πριν το τέλος του ημιχρόνου, οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” διπλασίασαν τα τέρματά τους, με τον Ντουρμάζ να σκοράρει. Ο Μαζουακού και πάλι έκανε την σέντρα από τα αριστερά, ο Λόρια πραγματοποίησε κακή έξοδο και ο Σουηδός με το αριστερό έστειλε την μπάλα στα δίχτυα, ανοίγοντας “λογαριασμό” με την ερυθρόλευκη φανέλα.

Στην επανάληψη, ο Ολυμπιακός συνέχισε στο ίδιο τέμπο. Ο Λόρία “έβγαλε” δύο πολύ καλά σουτ του Κασάμι, όμως δεν μπόρεσε να κάνει το ίδιο στο φανταστικό σουτ του “Τσόρι” Ντομίνγκες στο 54ο λεπτό. Δύο λεπτά αργότερα, ο Κώστας Μήτρογλου μπήκε ως αλλαγή στη θέση του Διαμαντάκου, γνωρίζοντας την αποθέωση από τους φιλάθλους που βρέθηκαν στο “Γ. Καραϊσκάκης”.

Η υπεροχή του Ολυμπιακού ήταν τέτοια που δεν άφησε σχεδόν σε καμία περίπτωση τον ΟΦΗ να απειλήσει την εστία του Ρομπέρτο. Ο “νεοφερμένος” Μπενίτες λίγο έλειψε να χριστεί σκόρερ στο 63ο λεπτό, όμως το σουτ που επιχείρησε σταμάτησε στο κάθετο δοκάρι.

Από το σημείο αυτό και μετά οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” κατέβασαν ταχύτητα, έχοντας στο μυαλό τους και το ματς της Τρίτης για το Champions League κόντρα στην Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης. Κάποια σουτ του Κασάμι και του Μπουχαλάκη (πέρασε ως αλλαγή) δεν κατέληξαν στα δίχτυα, με τον κίπερ των φιλοξενούμενων να λέει “όχι”. Ο Κώστας Μήτρογλου έφτασε δύο-τρεις φορές κοντά στο γκολ, ωστόσο δεν κατάφερε να στείλει τη μπάλα στα δίχτυα.

Τα τελευταία λεπτά στο φαληρικό γήπεδο ήταν διαδικαστικά με τον Ολυμπιακό να έχει “κλειδώσει” το τρίποντο και να φτάνει στους επτά βαθμούς.

Ο Αρτούρ Μαζουακού ήταν για ακόμη ένα ματς σταθερός, τόσο αμυντικά, όσο και επιθετικά. Ο νεαρός αριστερός μπακ του Ολυμπιακού ανέβαινε συνεχώς από τα αριστερά και οι “φαρμακερές” του σέντρες αποτελούσαν κίνδυνο στην περιοχή του ΟΦΗ. Στο αυτογκόλ του Αντελέγε, ήταν ο παίκτης που έβγαλε τη σέντρα, ενώ του πιστώνεται και η ασίστ στο δεύτερο γκολ του Ντουρμάζ.

Αδύναμος κρίκος

Ο Τζορτζ ξεκίνησε ως “αιχμή του δόρατος” για την ομάδα του Τζενάρο Γκατούζο, όμως σε καμία περίπτωση δεν τον “ένιωσε” η άμυνα του Ολυμπιακού. Ο Κοσταρικανός επιθετικός δεν κατάφερε σε καμία περίπτωση να απειλήσει την εστία του Ρομπέρτο (η αλήθεια είναι πως δεν τροφοδοτήθηκε και όπως θα έπρεπε), αναγκάζοντας τον προπονητή του να τον περάσει εκτός αγωνιστικού χώρου στο 62′.

Σχόλιο

Ο Ολυμπιακός μετά την κακή εμφάνιση στο Αγρίνιο κόντρα στον Παναιτωλικό επέστρεψε στις νίκες στο “Γ. Καραϊσκάκης” και πλέον πηγαίνει ήρεμος στο ματς της Τρίτης κόντρα στην Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης για το Champions League. Οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” δεν έδωσαν σε καμία περίπτωση το δικαίωμα στον ΟΦΗ να ελπίζει σε κάτι καλό στο ματς, δείχνοντας την υπεροχή του από τα πρώτα κιόλας λεπτά.

Το αυτογκόλ του Αντελέγε στο 22ο λεπτό, “έλυσε” τα πόδια των γηπεδούχων που στη συνέχεια μπόρεσαν να πάνε το ματς εκεί ακριβώς που ήθελαν, χωρίς να χαλάσουν πολλές δυνάμεις. Ο “Τσόρι” Ντομίνγκες έδειξε για άλλο ένα ματς την κλάση του με το γκολ που πέτυχε, ενώ ο Μιλιβόγεβιτς στο ντεμπούτο του ήταν σταθερός στη μεσαία γραμμή.

Με τον Σωκράτη Παπασταθόπουλο βασικό στη σύνθεσή της, η Μπορούσια Ντόρτμουντ νίκησε εύκολα στη Βεστφαλία με 3-1 τη Φράιμπουργκ και πλησίασε την πρώτη θέση στον ένα βαθμό.

Την ίδια ώρα η Μπάγερν «αγκομαχούσε» για να νικήσει 2-0 στο Μόναχο τη Στουτγκάρδη και να φτάσει την πρωτοπόρο Μπάγερ Λεβερκούζεν, που την Παρασκευλή είχε χάσει βαθμούς στην έδρα της από τη Βέρντερ Βρέμης.

Η Γκλάντμπαχ συνέτριψε 4-1 τη Σάλκε στο «Μπορούσια Παρκ» και πανηγύρισε το πρώτο της «τρίποντο» στο πρωτάθλημα. Στον αντίποδα, η Σάλκε παραμένει χωρίς νίκη, μετά την ήττα στην πρεμιέρα από το Ανόβερο και την ισοπαλία με την Μπάγερν Μονάχου στη 2η αγωνιστική.

Ανήμερα της 300ής επετείου της πτώσης της Βαρκελώνης από τον Φίλιππο Ε’ και τους Γάλλους, ο Νεϊμάρ έβαλε δύο γκολ στα τελευταία λεπτά και χάρισε στην Μπαρτσελόνα τη νίκη επί της Αθλέτικ Μπιλμπάο με 2-0.

Η ομάδα του Ερνέστο Βαλβέρδε όχι μόνο είχε κλείσει καλά όλους τους διαδρόμους προς τα καρέ του Γκόρκα Ιραϊθόθ, αλλά θα μπορούσε να προηγηθεί στο 3ο λεπτό με τον Μπενιάτ Ετσεμπερία (ο Κλαούντιο Μπράβο απέκρουσε το σουτ του). Στον αντίποδα η Μπαρτσελόνα απείλησε κατά βάση με τον Μουνίρ Ελ Χανταντί, στον οποίον έγινε πέναλτι που δεν καταλογίστηκε (τον έσπρωξε ο Κάρλος Γκουρπέγκι).

Διαμαρτυρίες για το μη καταλογισμό πέναλτι δικαιούται να έχει και η Αθλέτικ Μπιλμπάο, αφού ο Χαβιέρ Μαστσεράνο έσπρωξε εντός περιοχής τον Άριτς Αντούριθ. Εντούτοις, από τα μισά του δευτέρου ημιχρόνου κι έπειτα ο Λιονέλ Μέσι ταλαιπώρησε ουκ ολίγες φορές την αντίπαλη άμυνα και ο Νεϊμάρ βρήκε δύο φορές δίχτυα (στο 79′ και το 84′), με συνέπεια ο καταλανικός σύλλογος να πανηγυρίσει την τρίτη του νίκη σε ισάριθμες αναμετρήσεις.

Το γρήγορο γκολ του Γκάμπριελ Αγκμπονλαχόρ στο “Άνφιλντ” έδωσε το προβάδισμα και μαζί τη νίκη στην Άστον Βίλα (1-0 την Λίβερπουλ). Με απόλυτο πρωταγωνιστή τον Ντιέγκο Κόστα η Τσέλσι επικράτησε 4-2 της Σουόνσι κι έκανε το “τέσσερα στα τέσσερα”, ενώ ισόπαλο 2-2 έληξε το ντέρμπι μεταξύ της Άρσεναλ και της Μάντσεστερ Σίτι. Ντεμπούτο ο Γιώργος Σαμαράς με τη φανέλα της Γουέστ Μπρομ.

Κατώτερη των περιστάσεων αποδείχθηκε η Λίβερπουλ στην αναμέτρηση του “Άνφιλντ” με την Άστον Βίλα και, βέβαια, οι απουσίες (Ντάνιελ Στάριτζ, Εμρέ Τσαν, Τζο Άλεν) δεν αποτελούν άλλοθι για την ήττα με 1-0.

Δύο τελικές προσπάθειες του Λάζαρ Μάρκοβιτς στα πρώτα λεπτά κι άλλα δύο σουτ εκτός περιοχής από Άνταμ Λαλάνα, Μάριο Μπαλοτέλι ήταν οι καλές φάσεις των “κόκκινων” στο πρώτο ημίχρονο, ενώ στο δεύτερο ο Φιλίπε Κουτίνιο σημάδεψε το αριστερό δοκάρι με δυνατό πλασέ από το ύψος της μεγάλης περιοχής.

Η Άστον Βίλα κατέγραψε πολλές λάθος πάσες και μόλις τρεις αξιόλογες προσπάθειες, ενώ δεν κράτησε μπάλα, αλλά η Λίβερπουλ βρέθηκε σε τραγική μέρα και η δεύτερη εντός έδρας ήττα της στις τελευταίες τρεις αναμετρήσεις με τους “χωριάτες” χαρακτηρίζεται φυσιολογική.

 Το αυτογκόλ του Τζον Τέρι στο 11ο λεπτό έβαλε δύσκολα στην Τσέλσι, η οποία όμως ευτύχησε να έχει σε δαιμονιώδη μέρα τον Ντιέγκο Κόστα και εν τέλει να πανηγυρίσε τη νίκη με 4-2 επί της Σουόνσι στο “Στάμφορντ Μπριτζ”.

Οι φιλοξενούμενοι απείλησαν ουκ ολίγες φορές για δεύτερο γκολ, αλλά ο Ισπανός επιθετικός ήταν ασταμάτητος και με τρία γκολ (στο 45′, το 56′ και το 67′), έβαλε σε θέση οδηγού τους “μπλε”. Όταν, μάλιστα, ο νεοεισελθών Ρεμί (είχε αντικαταστήσει τον Κόστα) σκόραρε στο 81′, η σεμνή τελετή έλαβε τέλος, παρά τη μείωση από τον Τζόντζο Σέλβεϊ στο 86′.

Ισόπαλο 2-2 έληξε το ντέρμπι του “Έμιρεϊτς” μεταξύ της Άρσεναλ και της Μάντσεστερ Σίτι για την 4η αγωνιστική της Premier League. Ένα δοκάρι οι γηπεδούχοι, δύο οι φιλοξενούμενοι.

Aston Villa preserved their unbeaten run by inflicting a second defeat of the season on Liverpool, who will have to concentrate harder than this if they are to make progress when Champions League football returns to Anfield this week.

Villa were worth the win, which leaves them with 10 points from their first four games, even if they got lucky when Philippe Coutinho struck a post with a firm drive eight minutes from the end. The visitors never allowed the home side to settle in midfield and defended an early goal well for over an hour, with Nathan Baker giving a heroic impression of Ron Vlaar in the centre of defence.

Liverpool cannot say they were not warned either. In this fixture last season, Villa raced to a two-goal lead before being pegged back to a 2-2 draw, and Steven Gerrard noted beforehand that the Midlands team had a good recent record against Liverpool.

The tone for most games is set inside the first 15 or 20 minutes, according to Gerrard. The Liverpool captain also claimed in his programme notes that his side started so well in their last outing at Spurs, establishing a solid defensive platform and going on to control the game, that the margin of victory could easily have been greater than three goals.

He would not have been able to say the same about this match. Liverpool started quite poorly, particularly in defence, and were a goal down after eight minutes. First Mamadou Sakho allowed Gabriel Agbonlahor to claim a ball that should never have been his and was forced to concede an unnecessary corner, and a blocked Philippe Senderos header from Ashley Westwood’s cross stood up invitingly for Agbonlahor to poke into the bottom corner. Managers are never impressed when goals are conceded at set pieces, and Liverpool were lucky not to give away another one four minutes later, when Senderos found space to get on the end of a Westwood free-kick, but headed too high.

Villa could only be encouraged, and with Adam Lallana marking his debut with a booking for a rash challenge on Tom Cleverley, and Javier Manquillo having to make a smart recovery after being surprised by Agbonlahor’s pace, there was no doubt which side had bossed the first quarter. Mario Balotelli was struggling to get into the game, though the Italian was hardly helped by the myopic officiating that allowed Senderos to get away with a clear trip after the ball had gone. Balotelli also had reason to feel aggrieved about subsequent challenges by Senderos and Alan Hutton, but limited his reaction to picking himself up slowly and looking balefully at the referee.

Liverpool were missing the pace and penetration of the rested Raheem Sterling, yet that could hardly be offered as an excuse for the difficulty they were experiencing defending set pieces. Villa sensed vulnerability at every free-kick and corner, and could have gone two up before the interval when Hutton glanced on a Westwood corner for Senderos’s first-time shot to clear the bar. Lallana shot narrowly wide as the interval approached and Balotelli was reasonably close with a speculative effort from the angle of the area, but the home side’s clearest break of the first half came in stoppage time, when Alberto Moreno found a way behind the Villa defenders, but Kieran Richardson got back in time to cut out his cross.

Brendan Rodgers watched Liverpool’s attacks being comfortably repulsed by the outstanding Baker and the rest of his defence for 15 minutes of the second half before sending on Sterling, who was welcomed to the game by a scything tackle from Hutton for which the Villa full-back was rightly booked. Sterling beat Cleverley with his first chance to run with the ball at his feet, only to produce a shot that landed in the middle of the Kop.

With Villa barely crossing the halfway line in the second period and Liverpool seeing plenty of the ball, the only question for the final half hour was how long the visitors would be able to last out. Rodgers freshened his attack with Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini for the last 20 minutes, the former replacing the labouring Balotelli and the latter gaining an unexpected chance at the expense of Lazar Markovic, who had actually looked one of Liverpool’s more promising players going forward. None of the changes worked, with Lambert making a mess of his only decent chance. Coutinho almost rescued a point, but Villa deserved the victory for their overall organisation and determined defending.

By the end, it was unmistakable disappointment on Arsène Wenger’s face and a heavy sense of regret engulfing the stands about Arsenal’s failure to capitalise on those goals from Jack Wilshere and, brilliantly, Alexis Sánchez that had turned the game upside down in 11 second-half minutes. Yet they will also know it might have been worse on a day when both sides could easily have won or lost and which culminated in a rare show of temper from Manuel Pellegrini.

Martín Demichelis’s late header ultimately spared Manchester City a second successive defeat but they still had time to hit the post twice during that wild, chaotic finale when their opponents seemed to be doing everything possible to contrive a way to lose. Samir Nasri, facing his former club, was denied a stoppage-time winner because of an offside flag and City also had justifiable grievances that the referee, Mark Clattenburg, missed Wilshere’s handball inside the penalty area.

Arsenal limped to the finish but it would be unfair to reproach them too heavily when, earlier in the game, they had played as though affronted by their record against the top sides. Wenger and his players had been reminded all week about their sorry run of results in these high-importance fixtures but there was no sense of a side with an inferiority complex. They played with high skill and intensity and, more than that, they had to show considerable personality after going in behind at half-time to Sergio Agüero’s breakaway goal.

To recap, this is an Arsenal team that had taken 26 points out of a possible 90 against the teams they want to consider as bona fide rivals over the past five years. They set off like a team that wanted to show that statistic must be a glitch in the system, but for a long time after Agüero’s goal they found it difficult to get any momentum back. Vincent Kompany was a formidable opponent, as he always is in the big games, and David Silva’s nimble artistry between midfield and attack frequently troubled the home side.

It was a test of Arsenal’s character and, midway through the second half, they passed it with distinction. Wilshere equalised in the 63rd minute after running on to Aaron Ramsey’s pass, eluding Gaël Clichy and clipping a lovely diagonal shot above Joe Hart, and what followed was sensational.

This was one of Sánchez’s better performances from his brief time at Arsenal and it was a majestic volley with which he gave Arsenal the lead, even if Hart might have done better.

It was just a pity for Arsenal that everything started to unravel from that point. Wenger talked of conceding a “cheap goal” and he must have been startled by the carelessness of his team in the moments before and after Demichelis thudded a header past Wojciech Szczesny straight from a corner. “We did something remarkable to come back,” Wenger said. “The only disappointment for me is that we couldn’t keep the lead.”

Instead, there was enough late pressure from City to feel they could have added one final, dramatic twist. Aleksandar Kolarov drove one shot against the upright and then another substitute, Edin Dzeko, was denied by the other post.

Dzeko had been on the pitch, Pellegrini said, because City’s manager was convinced Clattenburg would end up sending off Agüero. Fernandinho and Frank Lampard, two of City’s other booked players, had already been withdrawn and it was rare to hear Pellegrini be so critical of a referee’s performance. Uppermost in his mind was that there were “clear fouls” before both Arsenal goals. That was an exaggeration but, overall, he was justified to say Clattenburg had a “very bad day”.

Lampard had been held back for this game so Yaya Touré could have a break after playing for Ivory Coast in Cameroon on Wednesday but the 36-year-old looked his age on a difficult City debut. His yellow card, for sliding into Ramsey, had exposed his lack of match fitness and the game was played at an unforgiving speed.

To start with, Arsenal had the clear edge but Danny Welbeck, on a debut that showed his good and bad, opted for the lofted shot, the dainty little pitching wedge, when he ran clear early on with the chance to open the scoring and, as Wenger acknowledged, it was almost certainly the wrong choice of club. The ball came back off the post, rebounding into Hart’s arms, and even at that early stage it was tempting to wonder whether the £16m signing might regret that wastefulness.

Sure enough, City broke in the 28th minute. Agüero went for the same ball as Mathieu Flamini in midfield and, as the ricochet spun it to the right, the Arsenal man hesitated, believing it was going for a throw-in. Jesús Navas had read the trajectory of the ball and as soon as he started haring down the line Arsenal were in trouble. His cross was beautifully weighted and Agüero had eluded Flamini to show his expertise in the penalty area.

Arsenal lost Mathieu Debuchy in the closing stages to a badly sprained ankle and they were looking dishevelled in those moments when the champions went searching for the winner. They very nearly found it but Arsenal, on the balance of play, had done enough before that point to think that it would have been unwarranted.
