Greek derby and A-League club battle in FFA Cup tonight

olympic%20fc

Sydney Olympic and Bentleigh Greens will go one on one for the FFA Cup, while Olympic FC takes on the behemoth of Central Coast Mariners.

A Greek derby and an A-League battle faces the Greek sponsored teams still left in the FFA Cup tonight.

Queensland’s Olympic FC will take on the toughest competition, when they come up against A-League 2012/13 champions Central Coast Mariners, while Sydney Olympic and Bentleigh Greens will get the NSW Greek community fired up in their match.

Sydney Olympic have the worst fixture of the bunch, with coach Grant Lee having to pick his team up after a NSW NPL grand final loss to Blacktown City.

He’s only had 48 hours to get his team up and ready, a situation Bentleigh Greens will be sure to use to their advantage.

Brothers Harris and Michael Gaitatzis, who helped dispose of Manly United in the last round, will again be vital to Olympic’s hopes while Ryan Keir and Go Shirai are key contributors in midfield.

Bentleigh Greens didn’t manage to get their final win for the NPL, after they were bested 2-0 by Melbourne Knights on Friday.

Being the travelling team gives them a handicap, but John Anastasiades’ side has proven itself capable, beating the same team Sydney Olympic failed to beat this Sunday, in their last FFA Cup match.

Jim Bellas’ Olympic FC have a mammoth task going up against Central Coast Mariners, but the Olympic coach has been doing his homework.

The A-League royalty will be bringing their best, but still in pre-season form, Olympic will be going against them at the best time possible.

Olympic has its own A-League secret weapon, ex-Brisbane Roar striker Tim Smits. He will be crucial in Olympic’s match hopes.

Socceroo’s insider tips on Seoul dangers

ACL Quarter Final - Western Sydney v Guangzhou
K-League-based Socceroo defender Alex Wilkinson has revealed the blueprint for victory when Western Sydney Wanderers FC face FC Seoul in their Asian Champions League semi-final.

The Wanderers flew out of Sydney this morning (Monday) ahead of Wednesday night’s semi-final first leg against the K-League giants at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Wilkinson, a World Cup Socceroo who plays for current league leaders Jeonbuk Motors, knows all about the threats FC Seoul possess and was happy to pass on his advice to Tony Popovic’s troops.

“Asian teams in general tend to struggle against really well-organized teams,” Wilkinson told www.a-league.com.au

“In Asia it’s a lot less tactical and a lot more gung-ho, get the ball forward and you rely on individual talent.

“They (FC Seoul) tend to struggle against teams like the Wanderers who are very well organized.

“It will be an interesting match-up. They (FC Seoul) tend to play three at the back as well a lot of the time, that’s something the Wanderers can exploit as well if they get numbers forward quickly.

“If they (Wanderers) can come over here and grab a goal going back to Australia they would have to be pretty confident. They are pretty strong at home and will have a huge crowd there.

“The Asian teams probably aren’t as used to travelling for 10 hours as the Aussie teams are so that could be a huge advantage as well.”

Finalists in last season’s ACL, FC Seoul possess a squad full of Korean internationals as well as some gifted imports, including Colombian playmaker Mauricio Molina and Spanish utility Osmar Barba.

“Molina is a dead-ball specialist who can play up front or out wide and any free-kick around the box is very dangerous with him around,” Wilkinson said.

“They’ve got (Japanese international Sergio) Escudero up front whose a small player but quick and very skilful.

“And the big guy in midfield, Barba, he runs the show for them in midfield and is a really important player.

“But the Wanderers are well organized defensively and tough to break down and I think in the Champions League that goes a long way to being successful.

“They (Wanderers) tend to be able to get goals as well wherever they go so if they can pick up a goal they’ll go back home and would have to fancy their chances.”

Wanderers are aiming to become just the second Hyundai A-League club to make the ACL final since Adelaide United did it back in 2008.

But Wilkinson says the success of the Wanderers, and Melbourne Victory’s and Central Coast’s impresses displays in the group stage, means Australian clubs are no longer taken lightly in the region.

“It’s great to see the Aussie teams doing so well in the Asian Champions league. We had Melbourne (Victory) in our group and they only missed out on goal difference and the Mariners nearly got through as well,” Wilkinson said.

“It’s interesting because I think in Asia the A-League teams are getting a lot of respect now.

“I know when we played Melbourne (Victory) our coach was really wary of them and hugely respectful of them which was great.”

Olympiacos v Atletico Madrid: Simeone’s men on crest of a wave

atletico
Last season’s runners-up Atletico Madrid will begin their UEFA Champions League campaign on a high after defeating Real Madrid on Saturday.

Diego Simeone’s men were the surprise package of the 2013-14 competition, reaching the final in which they were beaten 4-1 after extra time by neighbours Real.

But the scoreline did not tell the full story of a game that Atletico led 1-0 until the 93rd minute, when Sergio Ramos’ last-ditch equaliser forced extra minutes.

Real took control thereafter with Simeone’s side ultimately denied a remarkable double having won La Liga for the first time since 1996.

A close-season exodus followed when the likes of Diego Costa left the club, although Atletico responded by doing some shrewd business of their own.

And Simeone’s side have not skipped a beat, following up a two-legged Supercopa de Espana win over Real by picking up seven points from their first three La Liga games.

So impressive have their efforts been that some have suggested that this team is stronger than the one that finished last term.

“I had to say if this team is better or worse because we have different players,” said talismanic centre-back Diego Godin.

“Things change but the important thing is that the team continues with the same mentality. That’s the key.”

<a href=”http://adserver.adtechus.com/adlink|3.0|5344|2869401|0|0|ADTECH;loc=300;allowedsizes=300×250;key=footballnews+key2+key3+key4″ target=”_blank”><img src=”http://adserver.adtechus.com/adserv|3.0|5344|2869401|0|0|ADTECH;loc=300;allowedsizes=300×250;key=footballnews+key2+key3+key4″ border=”0″ width=”0″ height=”0″></a&aThe most impressive of those performances came on Saturday, when Arda Turan’s goal secured a 2-1 La Liga triumph at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It is, therefore, with huge confidence that Atletico head to Greece to face an Olympiacos side on Tuesday who have also begun this season with two wins and a draw domestically.

The Spanish side will certainly glean plenty of confidence from last term, when they went unbeaten in all six away games – including eye-catching wins against Porto, Milan and Chelsea.

But Olympiacos are dominant at home, epitomised by them winning 16 of their 17 league fixtures at the Karaiskakis Stadium in 2013-14.

Atletico have concerns over the fitness of Cristian Rodriguez, who missed the Real game through a calf injury sustained when on international duty with Uruguay.

The Greek champions are likely to be without Giannis Maniatis, who has been sidelined since August 30 with a left ankle sprain, although Dimitris Siovas is edging towards a comeback from a long-term injury.

Group A rivals Olympiacos and Atletico last met in the European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finals in 1992-93, when the Spaniards prevailed 4-2 on aggregate.

Football fan dead after clashes in Crete

017b768059aafe96c44ac2d2206a80b8

Police arrested a 27-year-old man and two more people in relation to the attack on a 46-year-old football fan.

A 46-year-old soccer fan was pronounced clinically dead on Sunday evening in Crete as violence between supporters of third division clubs Irodotos and Ethnikos Piraeus came to a tragic conclusion.

As the match at Iraklio was drawing to a close, Irodotos fans reportedly attacked the travelling supporters of Ethnikos at the stands.

One of the Ethnikos fans, who has lived at Hania on western Crete for the last 20 years, received several blows on his head and was carried unconscious to the local hospital, where the doctors pronounced him clinically dead. Two more Ethnikos fans were reported injured.

Police announced the arrest of a 27-year-old man in relation to the attack on the 46-year-old. Two more arrests were made for the clashes.

Ethnikos president Alexis Angelopoulos alleged that the referee insisted on finishing the game after the stoppage from the clashes, even going as far as asking the match doctor to stay at the stadium for the game to go on. Angelopoulos added that it took half an hour for the ambulance to arrive.

Man Utd – QPR 4-0:New signings return smiles to Old Trafford

original

A new-look Manchester United recorded their first competitive win under Louis van Gaal with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers.

Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind were handed starting berths by Van Gaal, while Radamel Falcao, who moved to Old Trafford on a season-long loan from Monaco on transfer deadline day, also made his debut as a second-half substitute. However, the show was stolen by another new recruit as Angel di Maria delivered a wonderful display on his maiden home outing for United.

Di Maria opened the scoring with his first goal in a United shirt midway through the opening half before playing a part as Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney made the points safe before half-time.

Rooney’s strike made him the joint-third top-scorer in Barclays Premier League history with 175 goals, and United, using a back four for the first time in the league this season, pulled further clear when Di Maria set up Juan Mata for a fourth after 58 minutes.

Falcao’s arrival in the 67th minute did not prompt the final flurry that United fans hoped, but there is likely to be a renewed optimism that the club can improve upon last season’s seventh-place finish.

United made a fast start to proceedings and threatened in the seventh minute when Mata shot well over the crossbar from the edge of the area.

QPR, with Sandro and Niko Kranjcar in their team for the first time since their deadline-day moves, appeared to have weathered the storm as some of the early intensity vanished from United’s play, but in the 24th minute Van Gaal’s men found the breakthrough their dominance of possession merited.

Clint Hill was penalised for a foul on Herrera and visiting goalkeeper Robert Green was beaten as an inswinging free-kick from Di Maria 40 yards out evaded everyone and bounced into the far corner.

United had clear control of the encounter but Harry Redknapp’s side were almost gifted an equaliser in the 31st minute by David de Gea. The United goalkeeper rushed off his line in an attempt to clear a long ball forward and was grateful for a diving block from Jonny Evans that prevented Matt Phillips from scoring.

QPR went further behind 10 minutes before half-time when former Athletic Bilbao man Herrera drove a low strike beyond the despairing Green to double United’s lead. Di Maria was heavily involved in the goal, surging down the left before slipping a neat pass into Rooney, who laid the ball off for Herrera to open his account after the England striker had seen his initial shot blocked.

Rooney got another in the 44th minute, rounding off a neat move involving Herrera and Mata with a powerful finish.

Redknapp threw on Armand Traore for Hill at half-time and the move almost paid instant dividends as the substitute pulled the ball back for Kranjcar to bring a fine save from De Gea’s foot.

Yet QPR could not prevent United adding further gloss to a superb display. A cross-shot from Di Maria cut out three players and left Mata with the simple task of firing high into the net from close range.

Falcao was brought on to rapturous applause from the home supporters, yet it was one of QPR’s debutants that almost cut the deficit, striker Eduardo Vargas firing narrowly wide after being played through down the right.

A glittering showing from Di Maria came to an end as he was withdrawn with an apparent case of cramp before the Old Trafford crowd were denied a fitting end to an encouraging afternoon when Falcao was thwarted by Green, who also saved from replacement Adnan Januzaj in the 90th minute.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “When you have a result of 4-0 then you can be happy as a coach but you always have points you can improve. I am very happy because of the result and the way we have played. We were very dominant and scored goals and kept a clean sheet.

“In ball possession we have lost the ball too much previously. We were more direct and that I like. Also, we have created a lot of chances, although we didn’t score enough of them. We have always to analyse what we have done. The result is fantastic but we can get much better. This is a good start.”

QPR manager Harry Redknapp: “A few minutes before half-time we were 1-0 down and still bang in the game. To come in at 3-0 down, when our ‘keeper has not had a shot to save…

“If you have ever played in a team 3-0 down at half-time it is very difficult. You have to make sure you don’t get beat by six or seven. [It was] a difficult day, I expected it and we got one.

“Leroy Fer is not fit, Sandro got a bit of cramp where he’s not played many games. [But] I still feel confident we will be OK.”

Sydney Olympic defeated 2-1by Blacktown in NSW premier League final

10590401_823228157709045_1891042335037616248_n

Blacktown City FC were crowned the 2014 IGA National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s 1 Champion after an enthralling Grand Final win over Sydney Olympic in a game that seemed to be right in the balance until the final whistle.

After 120 minutes of exhilarating play, Blacktown City FC just pipped Sydney Olympic at the post after scores were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. It was indeed a fitting way to end the season on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Sydney United Sports Centre at Edensor Park

The opening salvo of the game belonged to Blacktown City who in the fifth minute tried their luck with Mitchell Mallia’s powerful shot from the left, but veteran goalkeeper Paul Henderson was ever alert to parry away the attempt.

In the 10’ minute Sydney Olympic should really have opened the scoring when Dimitri Hatzimouratis very nicely fed the ball to Harris Gaitatzis who turned superbly and fired into the base of the left-hand post with Nenad Vekic well beaten. It was as close as Sydney Olympic got in the first stanza of play.

In the 17’ minute Blacktown City went close when a shot trickled just wide of the post and in the 25’ minute a drive from Ryuji Miyazawa was well blocked by Henderson but possibly it was going wide anyway.

The opening goal came shortly afterwards when a Kearyn Baccus rocket was luckily deflected in by Miyazawa who happened to be standing in the right place at the right time in the box. There was very little that Henderson could do to prevent the goal given the wicked deflection of which Miyazawa, bound for J-League 2 after this game, knew very little about.

In the 42’ minute a Harris Gaitatzis free-kick from the right was just marginally too high for Brendan Hooper who only glanced his header and as such the ball went just wide.

Referee Stephen Lucas brought to a halt the proceedings shortly afterwards. In the second half, the men in blue seemed to have come out of the dressing sheds with a renewed purpose and they were certainly determined to wind back their narrow deficit.

In the 63’ minute Brendan Hooper received a cross after a short corner and, with a header from point-blank range, he found Nenad Vekic who pulled off the save of the game with a delightful punch away. It was very close for Grant Lee’s team as they continued to create space and put pressure on Blacktown City’s defence.

In the 79’ minute Christos Tomaras scored arguably one of the goals of the season with a volley from distance that ended up in the back of the net. It was no more than Sydney Olympic deserved as they had clearly been building towards this equaliser in the second half with their clever play.

In the 88’ minute a blistering free-kick from Hatzimouratis ended up just wide of the intended target and it could easily have been the winner that Olympic were seeking.

In the dying minutes, in time added-on, a blistering shot from Tomaras was spectacularly saved by goalkeeper Vekic and the game then duly proceeded into extra time with a total of thirty extra minutes to be played.

The Grand Final continued under the floodlights and in the 92’ minute Travis Major, the IGA NPL NSW Mens 1 Player of the Year, received a wonderful ball from Sasa Macura and then he proceeded to thread it beautifully in the back of the net past an outstretched Henderson. It in the end it was to be the winning goal and the one that gave Blacktown City the lead once again in this great contest.

In the 97’ minute an incisive run from Baccus on the right was in the end nicely turned over the crossbar by Henderson. However, Sydney Olympic replied in the 103’ minute: a nice cross from Tiaga Soeda was destined for the head of a teammate until Vekic bravely punched the ball away. It was a very good game from the Blacktown City shot stopper.

Early in the second half of extra time Harris Gaitatzis fired just over the crossbar as Sydney Olympic went once again on search of an equaliser.

In the 122’ minute Baccus fired just over the crossbar too at the other end as Blacktown City tried very hard to put the game beyond doubt. Shortly afterwards Miyazawa charged into the box after winning the ball from an opponent, but in the end he pulled the trigger just wide in another close call.

With only minutes left on the clock Taiga Soeda tried an audacious chip from an acute angle and the ball narrowly drifted wide of Vekic’s goal. It would have been another absolutely superb goal from Sydney Olympic.

Right at the death a header from Hooper after a cross from Taiga Soeda ended up on the crossbar and it couldn’t have been closer for the men in blue. However, shortly afterwards, the impeccable referee Stephen Lucas blew fulltime on the season and Mark Crittenden’s team can proudly claim the title in 2014.
