Bluffer’s guide

It promises to be another tense and tight evening as the Wanderers aim to become just the second Australian side – since Adelaide United in 2008 – to make the ACL final.

If the scoreless first leg is anything to go by, there is very little between the two sides and goal-scoring chances could again be limited.

It means the first goal on Wednesday night will be vital to deciding the winner of the tie. Seoul, one of the biggest and most successful clubs in the K League, are aiming to make the final for the second straight year.

Route to goal

The Wanderers will be boosted by the return of attackers Tomi Juric and Brendon Santalab, as well as the versatile Shannon Cole.

It will give Tony Popovic a few more options and a great deal more firepower in the front third.

Juric offers a different presence to Labinot Haliti – who started in the first leg – which will allow the home side to be much more direct and put greater pressure on Seoul’s back three.

The first leg was the only time in 11 ACL games the Wanderers have been kept scoreless but with Juric, Santalab and Cole back and a huge home crowd behind them it’s hard to see them not putting one past Seoul goalkeeper Kim Yong-Dae.

Seoul is without Yun Il-Rok, who was injured on Asian Games duty, while Spanish defender/midfielder Osmar Barba is racing the clock to be fit. Sergio Escudero – who wasted a couple of great chances in the first leg – will again be the visitor’s best outlet for a goal while Colombian playmaker Mauricio Molina could be the x-factor.

Who’s been in the spotlight this week?

Wanderers skipper Nikolai Topor-Stanley has been rewarded for his consistent form over the last couple of years by earning a recall to the Socceroos squad for next month’s friendlies against UAE and Qatar.

But before he can focus on grabbing a green and gold jersey he will have his work cut out trying to keep the likes of Sergio Escudero, Everton Santos and Mauricio Molina quiet.

If the Wanderers are to continue their fairytale run to the final, Topor-Stanley and the rest of his defence will need to be at the top of their game.

Mistake or master-stroke?

It could be a master-stroke for Seoul coach Choi Yong-Soo to use Mauricio Molina from the start. The Colombian was only a second half substitute in the first leg but they immediately looked a better side when he was on the pitch.

It would be a mistake for the Wanderers to go all-out for the goal, which would put them through to the final, with Seoul knowing an away goal would put them in the box seat to progress.

Form lines

The Wanderers haven’t played a competitive match since the first leg. With the A-League season still over a week away from starting, Tony Popovic’s squad have been able to focus solely on the clash and they should be physically and mentally fresh enough to produce their best.

Seoul had the weekend off in the K League, allowing them to arrive in Australia early to prepare for this game. The Koreans shouldn’t be short on confidence, currently on an unbeaten run of 13 games in all competitions. They are hitting their straps at just the right time of the season.

Prediction

Result: Wanderers 2-1 FC Seoul

Back in front of a raucous home crowd, the Wanderers will be confident of getting the victory to get them through to the final.

They have been sensational in the knockout stages at Parramatta and, with Juric back in the side, they look a far more dangerous outfit.

It could very much come down to which side gets the first goal. If it’s the Wanderers you would back them do enough to get a victory but if Seoul strikes first the home side might find it hard to break down their defence at least twice.

It will be a cracking atmosphere in Parramatta and that could be what helps get the Wanderers over the line and keep the club’s fairytale run into an ACL final.

Peter Katholos coaching in the Skills Acquisition Program.

Peter Katholos’ tenure might have ended at Football NSW a year ago, but his experience with the Skills Acquisition Program (SAP) was not a happy one.

The former Socceroos and NSL great says there are gaping problems with the program and wants to see more done about the state of coaching in the state and nationally.

“I’m not involved anymore with the program because I don’t agree with its structure,” Katholos told Neos Kosmos.

“The whole thing needs revamping if we are going to be a force in world football, this should be our aim.”

The program trains children aged Under 9 through to Under 12s, promoting itself as an elite program for young footballers. That’s not what Katholos saw.

“When you call it ‘elite’ it means the best,” he says.

“No disrespect to the guys but what I’m saying to you is the leading program in football NSW for all those age groups had inappropriate coaches to teach skill.”

Katholos reveals that although many of the coaches were fully qualified, there was no set curriculum.

“A skills acquisition program had no curriculum and the program was endorsed by Football Federation Australia (FFA).”

“Where is the 40 week program that every coach in Australia follows? Where is the manual so everyone is uniformed to do everything the same in skill teaching?”

Katholos says he tried to contact then FFA technical director Han Berger, author of the curriculum, but he got no response.

Current technical director for Football NSW Alex Tobin declined to comment when Neos Kosmos contacted him, but did say it’s an important issue.

Katholos isn’t convinced that they are committed to change.

“It’s all talk. It has never being put properly into action,” he said.

He has seen many parents take their kids out of the elite system in Australia and go through private academies.

One such example is recent Udinese signing Panos Armenakas. Armenakas bypassed the elite set up in NSW to train at the AC Milan Academy.

Katholos says that academies are now an option for parents because they offer something different.

Katholos wants to see a national approach to building academies.

“There should be training centres of excellence around the country funded by the federations with top coaches coaching our best footballers. They don’t exist.”

Pay disparity also means the best coaches are leaving Australia.

“Clubs collect $1,500 per kid and you pay the coach $3,000-$5,000 per year. How are you going to attract the best coaches?”

There has been promising steps at least to see a better national curriculum implemented.

The FFA has just appointed Belgian youth coach Eric Abrams as their new technical director to oversee the elite youth player development and coach education strategies of Australian football.

Abrams will be leading all of the elite pathway and youth development structures in line with the national curriculum that has been in place since 2009.

He will also take responsibility of the coach education program.

The new structure follows a review of the FFA’s technical structure by FFA head of national performance Luke Casserly, which highlighted youth technical development as a key area for improvement.

Under the new structure, Socceroos head coach Ange Postecoglou will oversee all the underage and senior national men’s team and Westfield Matildas head coach Alen Stajcic will oversee all the underage and senior women’s national teams.

Το «γάντι του μποξ» που σήκωσε λίγες ώρες νωρίτερα, ο τεχνικός της Μάλμε, ‘Αγκε Χαρέιντε, υποτιμώντας ξεκάθαρα τον Ολυμπιακό, «φόρεσε» με τη σειρά του ο προπονητής των «ερυθρολεύκων», Μίτσελ, ο οποίος στη συνέντευξη Τύπου εν όψει της αναμέτρησης του Champions League την Τετάρτη στη Σουηδία, ανταπέδωσε τα «πυρά» και τις ειρωνείες.

«Δεν μας επηρέασαν όσα είπε ο προπονητής της Μάλμε. Το λέω ειλικρινά, εγώ δεν έχω επηρεαστεί καθόλου. Ισα-ίσα μας διασκέδασε» και συνέχισε:

«Συμφωνώ απολύτως με όσα είπε. Δείχνει ότι γνωρίζει καλά την ιστορία μας και σέβεται το σύλλογό μας, άρα συμφωνούμε μαζί του. Συμπληρώνουμε 100 ματς στην Ευρώπη. Είμαστε περήφανοι που είμαστε Έλληνες, που μετέχουμε σε διοργάνωση με τις κορυφαίες ομάδες Αγγλίας, Ισπανίας.

Συμφωνούμε λοιπόν μαζί του, θα προσπαθήσουμε αύριο αν και είμαστε χειρότεροι. Αν είναι τόσο πετυχημένος στο γήπεδο όσο και στις αίθουσες Τύπου, τότε θα έχουμε λίγα πράγματα να κάνουμε», ήταν το καυστικό σχόλιο του Μίτσλε, ο οποίος θέλησε να απαντήσει στον συνάδελφό του.

Σε ερώτηση που του τέθηκε στην συνέχεια για τον Τζίμι Ντουρμάζ υποστήριξε πως: «Θα το γνωρίζει σίγουρα ο προπονητής της Μάλμε αυτό. Το εάν θα παίξει ή όχι (σ.σ. γέλια). Μας έχει μελετήσει και διαβάσει πολύ. Ξέρει για εμάς. Οπότε μπορείτε να τον ρωτήσετε. Θα ξέρει. Από τότε που ήμουν μικρός και λυπάμαι που θα το πω, το πρώτο που με δίδαξαν ήταν να σέβομαι τον αντίπαλο.

Ενημερώνω τον προπονητή της Μάλμε ότι αυτό το έμαθα στη Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης! Ίσως αν ο προπονητής της Μάλμε είχε παίξει στη Ρεάλ ή είχε προπονήσει τον Ολυμπιακό θα καταλάβαινε καλύτερα. Η δική μου εποχή της δόξας έχει περάσει γιατί αυτό ήταν όταν ήμουν παίκτης. Και πρωταγωνιστές είναι οι παίκτες. Ξέρουμε ότι ο κάθε προπονητής έχει τον τρόπο του, όμως εγώ βλέπω την Μάλμε ακριβώς όπως είχα δει την Ατλέτικο», ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά.

«Ελπίζουμε ότι αύριο ο Όλσεν, ο γκολκίπερ της Μάλμε, δεν θα παίξει πάλι τόσο καλά. Αλλά ας μη θυμώσει ο προπονητής της Μάλμε (γέλια…)», ανέφερε κλείνοντας, ενώ μετά το τέλος της συνέντευξης Τύπου στήθηκε πηγαδάκι με τους Σουηδούς δημοσιογράφους.

Ο τεχνικός του Ολυμπιακού τους ρώτησε αν είναι πάντα διασκεδαστικές οι συνεντεύξεις Τύπου όπως αυτή της Τρίτης (30/09), με τους εκπροσώπους του Τύπου να απαντούν καταφατικά. Ο Μίτσελ στη συνέχεια ανέφερε: «Θα θέλατε να αλλάξουμε θέση;», με τον Σουηδό ρεπόρτερ να απαντά: «Να αλλάξουμε και μισθό όμως!», για να σχολιάσει ο Ισπανός τεχνικός ότι: «Θα πρέπει να ρωτήσετε τη γυναίκα μου γι’ αυτό».

Μανιάτης: «Έχουμε καταλάβει τι πρέπει να κάνουμε»

Τη δική του απάντηση στον τεχνικό της Μάλμε, Άγκε Χαρέιντε, έδωσε ο αρχηγός του Ολυμπιακού στη συνέντευξη Τύπου για τον αγώνα της Τετάρτης.

«Εμείς είμαστε εδώ για τη νίκη. Δεν θα κοιτάξουμε να κερδίσουμε μόνο και μόνο επειδή είναι το 100ό ματς στο Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ, Θέλει να έχουμε συγκέντρωση από την αρχή της αναμέτρησης. Θα είναι ένα δύσκολο ματς. Δείξαμε τις δυνατότητές μας με την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης στο Καραϊσκάκη. Αυτό που πρέπει να κάνουμε τώρα, είναι να ξαναπαίξουμε σύμφωνα με τις δυνατότητές μας και να πάρουμε τη νίκη», ήταν τα λόγια του Γιάννη Μανιάτη.

Αναφορικά με τις δηλώσεις Χαρέιντε, ο Μανιάτης ανέφερε: «Σίγουρα κάναμε μεγάλη νίκη με την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης. Κανείς δεν μπορεί να το αμφισβητήσει αυτό. Όλοι είδαν την μεγάλη προσπάθεια που κάναμε και τη νίκη με τη βοήθεια του κόσμου. Πρέπει να δει ο προπονητής τους την ιστορία μας. Εμείς φτάνουμε τα 100 παιχνίδια στην Ευρώπη. Είμαστε συνεχώς στις μεγάλες διοργανώσεις. Δεν είναι σωστό να μην δείχνει σεβασμό στην ιστορία μας».

Όσο για την ήττα στο Περιστέρι, σχολίασε: «Και πριν από την Ατλέτικο δεν είχαμε παίξει καλά στο πρωτάθλημα. Με τον Ατρόμητο δεν ήμασταν καλοί. Δεν είχαμε συγκέντρωση. Πρέπει να αλλάξουμε το αγωνιστικό μας πρόσωπο. Όλοι το έχουμε καταλάβει και είμαστε έτοιμοι να το δείξουμε στον αγωνιστικό χώρο. Εμείς ως παίκτης δεν θα δούμε την προϊστορία. Δεν το κοιτάζουμε αυτό. Θα ακούσουμε μόνο τι θα μας πει ο προπονητής. Θα δούμε την ανάλυση της Μάλμε και θα κοιτάξουμε με την απόδοσή μας να κερδίσουμε το παιχνίδι. Όλοι έχουμε καταλάβει το λάθος στο Περιστέρι. Αυτό είναι σίγουρο. Μας μίλησε ο προπονητής γι’ αυτό. Μας μίλησε και ο πρόεδρος. Όλοι μας έχουμε καταλάβει το τι πρέπει να κάνουμε και θα το δείξουμε στο γήπεδο».

Μετά την αξιόλογη πρεμιέρα στο «Καμπ Νου» (είχε ηττηθεί με τα τιμητικό 1-0 από τη Μπαρτσελόνα), ο ΑΠΟΕΛ πήρε ένα ακόμη πιο θετικό αποτέλεσμα, καθώς στην 2η αγωνιστική του Champions League έφερε το ισόπαλο 1-1 υποδεχόμενος τον Αγιαξ στο «ΓΣΠ».

Από εκεί και πέρα, τη νίκη της βραδιάς πέτυχε η Παρί Σεν Ζερμέν που αν και χωρίς τον Ζλάταν Ιμπραΐμοβιτς, κατάφερε να επιβληθεί με 3-2 κόντρα στη Μπαρτσελόνα.

Manchester City FC 1-1 AS Roma
Francesco Totti’s first goal in England, and a historic one at that, earned the Giallorossi a deserved Group E draw.

Francesco Totti hit a history-making goal to earn AS Roma a richly deserved draw at UEFA Champions League Group E rivals Manchester City FC.

Totti’s first-half strike cancelled out Sergio Agüero’s early penalty and earned him a place in the record books as the UEFA Champions League’s oldest scorer at 38 years and three days. The result left City still seeking a win in the group and three points behind the second-placed Giallorossi after two games.

The opening minutes were all about Maicon, Roma’s Brazilian full-back, returning to the club where he spent the 2012/13 season. His tug on Agüero in the Roma box was penalised by referee Björn Kuipers and the Argentinian international did the rest, sending Łukasz Skorupski the wrong way with his spot kick. A minute later Maicon very nearly made amends when Totti’s chipped pass put him clear and he smashed an angled shot against the crossbar.

That was a sign that Roma would not be cowed by the early setback and a foretaste too of Totti’s influence. The Serie A outfit looked confident in possession, as would befit a team with six straight wins behind them, and in the 23rd minute they were back level as Totti found the net to usurp Ryan Giggs as the UEFA Champions League’s oldest marksman.

It was a beautifully worked goal. Seydou Keita fed Radja Nainggolan and reading the arc of Totti’s run behind the City defence, he released his captain, who lofted the ball beyond Hart and into the far corner. It was Totti’s only touch in the City box in the first period.

Totti’s next trick was a cute dink that put Gervinho clear only for the Ivory Coast forward’s control to let him down. What Gervinho does bring Roma is raw pace and two minutes before half-time he streaked away from Gaël Clichy and drew a near-post save from Hart.

City had started with two strikers in Agüero and Edin Džeko yet they were being outplayed in midfield. Manuel Pellegrini’s response was to send on James Milner for Jesús Navas at half-time, yet Roma remained on top, Totti flashing a shot wide and Hart keeping out Miralem Pjanić’s close-range attempt. Pellegrini’s next move was to bring on Frank Lampard for Džeko. As a consequence City finished strongly, with David Silva clipping an effort wide from Pablo Zabaleta’s low cross in added time, but for the fourth season running failed to win their opening home game in the competition.

APOEL FC 1-1 AFC Ajax

A highly entertaining encounter in Nicosia ended all square as APOEL FC pegged back AFC Ajax to ensure both sides failed to get their first Group F win at the second attempt.

The visitors signaled their intent with scarcely 100 seconds on the clock. APOEL were still napping as the Dutch side swiftly moved between the lines, working the ball to the feet of Lasse Schöne on the left. The Dane’s delicious cross though was wasted, as Kolbeinn Sigthórsson fired wide from close range. The hosts were looking in trouble as Ajax settled and commanded proceedings comfortably, producing the majority of their attacking moves from the right side.

It did take Ajax 28 minutes to capitalise on their superiority. Schöne beat the offside trap but his shot was saved brilliantly by Urko Pardo. However the ball landed at the feet of Lucas Andersen whose cool finish broke the deadlock. The lead did not last long, however. Three minutes later, Ricardo van Rhijn was judged to have handled the ball in his box and Gustavo Manduca expertly converted the spot kick.

That equaliser shifted momentum as the home side gained metres on the pitch and become increasingly dangerous, while closing down space in their own half. Sensing blood they attacked, and came very close to a second goal three minutes before half-time. Manduca launched a counterattack from the left and produced a great cross, but Cillian Sheridan just failed to make contact, leaving Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen sighing with relief.

After the interval the match gained pace as both sides came out of the dressing rooms determined to exploit their chances, each one making the most of their strongest attributes; APOEL’s experience and Ajax’s youthful vigour. The game could have swung either way – and the 54th minute summed things up. Schöne tested Pardo’s reflexes with a powerful shot and within a matter of seconds, Stathis Aloneftis produced an excellent cross at the other end only for Sheridan to misplace his header by a fraction.

With 20 minutes to go Cillessen stopped Mário Sérgio’s fierce shot before Ajax flew down the other end only for Pardo’s instincts to kick in and deny Sigthórsson. The visitors pushed late on, Davy Klaassen sending a late header just off target, but APOEL held firm and the spoils were shared.

Paris Saint-Germain cast off their recent troubles to lay a significant marker in Group F, edging a thrilling match 3-2 against fellow section heavyweights FC Barcelona.

Although the pre-match talk revolved around Zlatan Ibrahimović’s heel injury, Paris needed ten minutes to show they could cope without their talismanic forward, David Luiz becoming the first player to score against Barcelona this term. Lionel Messi responded immediately, but the French champions punished Barça from a second set piece via Marco Verratti, before Blaise Matuidi and Neymar swapped quickfire second-half efforts on a famous night for the hosts.

Despite the mood of doubt swirling around the Parc des Princes ahead of kick-off, Paris belied their unconvincing Ligue 1 form with some effective probing, shuffling neat passes around in a style reminiscent of their opponents. They looked neither lost without Ibrahimović nor overawed by the occasion, and turned their early gains into a goal when Luiz controlled and slotted a Lucas free-kick low past Marc-André ter Stegen from close range.

The first goal Barcelona had conceded in 681 minutes stretching back to last season, Luiz’s opener brought a predictably forceful response. Indeed, the home fans had hardly finished celebrating before Messi exchanged passes with Andrés Iniesta and steered a fine left-footed effort across Salvatore Sirigu.

Edinson Cavani then shot over as an electrifying start threatened to become epic, but everyone was allowed time to breathe before the next chance – Sirigu grappling onto an acrobatic Messi attempt. The respite did not last long, however, and, with 26 minutes gone, Verratti headed in a Thiago Motta corner for his first Paris goal.

Having exploited set pieces to devastating effect, Laurent Blanc’s men hit their third on the break, Matuidi sliding in at the back post to slam in a Gregory van der Wiel cross. To Blanc’s supreme frustration, though, his charges were promptly guilty of switching off for a second time, and Neymar finished expertly in off the far post after receiving the ball from Daniel Alves.

Barcelona introduced Munir El Haddadi and Xavi Hernández – making a record 143rd appearance in the UEFA Champions League proper – as they tried to conjure an equaliser. With Paris switching focus to defending their lead, the Blaugrana were allowed to dictate play, and Marquinhos had to react superbly to block Jordi Alba before El Haddadi fired against the post from distance. Η… αρχή των αποδείξεων είναι κόντρα στην Μάλμε για την δεύτερη ημέρα της κορυφαίας ευρωπαϊκής διασυλλογικής διοργάνωσης, όπου ο Ολυμπιακός αναχωρεί το πρωί της Τρίτης (30/9) για την Σουηδία.

Στόχος για το «συγκρότημα» του Μίτσελ είναι η νίκη, ούτως ώστε να αρχίσει η… αντεπίθεση, αλλά και να αποδείξουν πως έχουν λάβει το μήνυμα από τον πρόεδρο της ΠΑΕ.

Ο Μίτσελ ετοιμάζει τα πλάνα του για την αναμέτρηση στην Σκανδιναβία, έχοντας πάρει μαζί του 22 ποδοσφαιριστές, θέλοντας να έχει όλες τις επιλογές στη διάθεσή του. Αντίθετα, εκτός «μάχης» έχουν τεθεί οι Μπενίτεζ, Σιόβας, Φουστέρ, Γκαζαριάν και Ντοσεβί με προβλήματα τραυματισμών.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has chosen his squad for two upcoming friendly matches overseas.

The team will take on fellow 2015 AFC Asian Cup nations United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar in October.

On the squad is half-Greek, half-Italian player and World Cup initiate James Troisi. The former Melbourne Victory player is now on loan to Belgian club S.V. Zulte Waregem.

The 25-year-old was getting offers left, right and centre from other A-League clubs over the past two months, but decided to stick to his contract at Juventus, who decided to loan him out again.

Sydney FC striker Bernie Ibini is the only uncapped player to be chosen, in line with Postecoglou’s philosophy of giving young malleable players a chance.

Postecoglou has made it no secret that he expects to throw him and other less experienced players in the deep end while they have friendlies in the works.

“We are still giving players we’ve identified for the national team an opportunity to experience international football to ensure we create a deeper pool of players to call on for the Asian Cup and beyond,” Postecoglou said.

“These two games give us a few more to throw into the mix with an experienced core group of players to see how they cope with the training intensity and the demands of international football before we start monitoring them all leading into the Japan match.”

Postecoglou also included four players in the A-League, Tomi Juric, Mark Milligan, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Ibini.

With the friendlies being played during the first matches of the new 2014/15 season, Postecoglou says he’ll have to play a balancing act between the local competition and the needs of the national team.

“We were mindful that the matches coincide with the first weekend of the A-League and we tried to not be too disruptive but ultimately this is our national team and everyone agrees this is the highest honour in the game and we will always pick players deserving of that honour,” Postecoglou said.
