Arsenal’s in-form playmaker Mesut Ozil believes his side can complete their comeback from Champions League crisis and secure their spot in the knockout stages, with the German targeting an early goal to overcome Olympiakos.

Defeats in their opening two games left Arsene Wenger’s side on the verge of elimination and, whilst they have dragged themselves back into contention ahead of the final round of games, they need an impressive result in Athens to book their place in the knockout stages.

If they are to pick up the result they need Arsenal will almost certainly need Ozil, with four goals and 12 assists in 19 matches this season, to continue his sparkling run of form and take on further responsibility for his injury-ravaged team-mates.

And the 27-year-old believes that if his team can get off to a fast start they should be able to continue a qualification run from the initial group stage that dates back to 2001.

“We have to be focused on the game; we have to give a really good performance,”Ozil said.

“If we score an early goal, I’m confident that we can win this game and go through. I hope that I can help the team with a good performance on the night.

“We know that we have a lot of quality up front, but our goal is to go into half-time ahead and then we will know that everything is possible. We have to also be careful in defence that we don’t concede a goal.”

A series of calamitous defensive errors by David Ospina and Kieran Gibbs gifted Olympiakos a shock 3-2 win at the Emirates that has allowed them to build a three point advantage over Wednesday’s opponents.

With the Gunners needing to match or better that result to qualify for the next stage Ozil has urged his team-mates not to make the same sort of mistakes that marred the early stages of their campaign.

“Olympiacos can play good football – we saw that in the first match. They want to play on the counter-attack but we can’t concede goals like we did again,” he said.

“We have to be good in defence. If they score a goal then we have to score three goals, although we know that we can score goals.”

Ronaldo, 30, is wanted by Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, while the MLS want to sign him to one of their franchises.

The Portugal international is thought to be eyeing a move away from the Bernabeu – possibly in January – after a fall-out with manager Rafael Benitez.

And Spanish newspaper AS claim Real have already drawn up their list of replacements should Ronaldo quit the club.

Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski, 27, is top of that list and Real are prepared to make him their highest-paid player to prise him away from Germany.

The Poland international boasts 26 goals from 26 appearances for club and country this season – attracting the eye of Real’s president Florentino Perez.

His agent, Cezary Kucharski, was spotted during Madrid’s 4-1 home win over Getafe at the weekend.

Lewandowski is expected to be offered around £300,000 a week to sign for Real, trumping Ronaldo’s £288,000 weekly earnings.

It is claimed United themselves are willing to offer Ronaldo £250,000 a week to bring their former player back to Old Trafford.

That figure would dwarf all but Wayne Rooney’s £300,000 weekly wage in the Premier League – yet is nothing to what Ronaldo could earn at PSG.

The French champions are reportedly willing to pay their top target £26m a season after tax, which is roughly double what he currently earns in Spain.

As for Real, they are also considering their options should they lose the services of Karim Benzema, who is currently involved in a court case over a blackmail scandal.

Georginio Wijnaldum inspired Newcastle to their third win of the season as they beat in-form Liverpool.

The Magpies moved above Sunderland into 18th place in the table after Wijnaldum’s shot was deflected off Martin Skrtel’s knee, before the Dutchman added a second in injury time.

Liverpool, who had won seven of their last eight games, were poor.

Alberto Moreno was wrongly denied by an offside flag as Reds boss Jurgen Klopp suffered a second defeat in 12 games.

But in a scrappy game which lacked quality, Newcastle achieved a much-needed victory for Steve McClaren, who admitted earlier this week that confidence at the club has been “fragile”.

After conceding eight goals in their last two games, the result came courtesy of an improved defensive display from the hosts.

And in Wijnaldum, who took his tally to seven for the season following his £14.5m move from PSV Eindhoven in July, they have a player who has offered the goal-scoring threat they have been previously missing.

Following Liverpool’s 6-1 win at Southampton in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, Klopp’s reputation at Liverpool reached new heights.

But his decision to make six alterations, including the omission of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi, who scored five goals at St Mary’s between them, seemed to backfire.

Winger Jordon Ibe was their best outlet going forward but Christian Benteke was left isolated ahead of him and wasted a good chance from a corner, while Roberto Firmino looked a vastly inferior player to the one who tormented Manchester City two weekends ago.

Once Benteke and Firmino were replaced by Sturridge and Adam Lallana after the hour mark, Liverpool found a better rhythm to their play.

However, Sturridge, playing in only his fifth Premier League game of the season after injury, wasted a good chance to equalise and Moreno was denied a wonderful volley from an angle.

The result leaves Liverpool in seventh place, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

José Mourinho has admitted a top-six finish, and its associated qualification for the Europa League, might represent the extent of Chelsea’s lingering Premier League ambitions this season after Bournemouth condemned the ailing champions to an eighth defeat of the campaign to move out of the bottom three.

The Chelsea manager was adamant Glenn Murray’s winning goal eight minutes from time should have been ruled out for offside, and that his own side should have been awarded a penalty just after the hour mark when the ball struck Simon Francis’s arm in the area. Yet his criticisms were relatively downbeat, a reflection perhaps of Football Association sanctions earlier in the campaign, with his mood reflecting exasperation at his team’s inconsistencies.

“Before this game I was still thinking we could finish top four,” said Mourinho, whose team loiter 14th, three points above the relegation zone and a distant 14 from the top four.

“Everyone up there is losing points. Only Leicester are consistent in victories, they keep winning and winning. Every other team, even the top ones, are finding consecutive victories difficult. So before the game it was realistic to think our quality would take us out of this position, but maybe now we have to think about top six.

“I’m concerned, of course. If our players are not able to give the maximum every day, that is a problem. If you analyse match after match, there are a few players who are finding it difficult to be consistent. You think there is an evolution [in their form], but maybe it is just one moment in which they are good. So all I would say is: ‘Let’s think about winning the next game and forget about setting targets.’ To fix targets is impossible with our inconsistency.”

The lack of progress, with each mini-revival pursued by another dismal setback, has undermined Mourinho’s authority, though the manager reiterated his belief that he retains the confidence of the club’s hierarchy. The reality is there have been four losses – to West Ham, Liverpool, Stoke and now Bournemouth – in seven league games since the owner sanctioned a statement issuing a public vote of confidence in the manager in early October.

While Eddie Howe and his players celebrated “the best individual result in the club’s history” with their owner, the Russian businessman Maxim Demin, delighted in the tunnel post-match, Mourinho was left to bemoan his strikers’ lack of bite up front while reiterating he would not petition the board for funds to be spent in January on reinforcements. “Well, we have a good striker in Diego, a good striker in Rémy,” he said. “They proved last season they could score the goals the team needs. I don’t speak about Radamel Falcao because he’s been injured for a long time. The reality is that, this season, they are not scoring enough goals for us.

“But, again, I feel that we don’t have the right to ask the club for new players. I don’t think so. We started the season with this squad. We have to do better. The players have to do better. And it’s more about the players having to do better than the club to go to the market. I think people must feel responsibilities. The owner, the board … they are not responsible for the bad moment. The responsibility of the bad moment is mine and the players.

“We didn’t deserve to lose this game. Our opponent – in the period that they thought only of defence – managed to get a goal and there was a clear mistake from the referee. And I think it is a clear handball and penalty with the score at 0-0. So the referee made a mistake, and the linesman made another mistake, but that’s football. But in the first half we were not aggressive enough, in the second half we arrived in dangerous positions a lot of time with a lot of crosses from the right-hand side, but didn’t score.”

Έστω και σε πολύ βαρύ κλίμα στο «Σαντιάγκο Μπερναμπέου», με μεγάλη μερίδα οπαδών της να αποδοκιμάζουν τον Ράφα Μπενίτεθ και αρκετούς παίκτες, η Ρεάλ νίκησε άνετα 4-1 τη Χετάφε, στο ματς με το οποίο άνοιξε η αυλαία της 14ης αγωνιστικής του ισπανικού πρωταθλήματος.

Τα δύο πρώτα γκολ των «μερένγκες» πέτυχε ο Καρίμ Μπενζεμά, ο οποίος αγωνίστηκε για πρώτη φορά μετά την αποκάλυψη της εμπλοκής του στην υπόθεση εκβιασμού του Ματιέ Βαλμπουενά και την απαγγελία κατηγοριών εναντίον του από τις γαλλικές δικαστικές αρχές. Ο Γάλλος επιθετικός αποδοκιμάστηκε από τους «ultras», όπως και ο Μπέιλ.

Αήττητος και με την ψυχολογία στα ύψη ο Ολυμπιακός ετοιμάζεται για τον «τελικό» με την Άρσεναλ στο Καραϊσκάκη, που θα κρίνει την πρόκριση τους «16» του Champions League. Οι «ερυθρόλευκοι» πέρασαν αλώβητοι από την Κομοτηνή (Πανθρακικός – Ολυμπιακός 3-4) με νίκη επί του Πανθρακικού και πλέον μετρούν 13 νίκες σε ισάριθμους αγώνες.

Νωρίτερα, ο Αστέρας Τρίπολης γνώρισε την εντός έδρας ήττα μετά από ολική επαναφορά του Ηρακλή (Αστέρας – Ηρακλής 1-2).

Η Ντόρτμουντ δεν άφησε αναξιοποίητη την πρώτη φετινή ήττα της Μπάγερν (3-1 από την Γκλάντμπαχ), καθώς νίκησε 2-1 στη «Φολκσβάγκεν Αρένα» τη Βόλφσμπουργκ, και μείωσε σε πέντε βαθμούς την απόσταση που τη χωρίζει από τους Βαυαρούς.

Το τελευταίο ματς της ημέρας ήταν συγκλονιστικό, με την αντίπαλο του ΠΑΟΚ στο Europa League να προηγείται στο 32΄ με τον Ρόις και να κρατάει ως το 90΄, παρότι αγωνίστηκε χωρίς τους βασικούς κεντρικούς αμυντικούς της, Παπασταθόπουλο και Χούμελς (αμφότεροι αντιμετώπιζαν πρόβλημα υγείας).

Στις πρώτες θέσεις της βαθμολογίας παραμένει η Χέρτα, που νίκησε 2-1 στο Βερολίνο τη Λεβερκούζεν, εκμεταλλευόμενη και την αποβολή του Μπένις μόλις στο 17΄. Με πρωταγωνιστή τον Ζαϊρο (δύο γκολ και μία ασίστ), η Μάιντς θριάμβευσε 3-1 στο Αμβούργο και «φρέναρε» την ανοδική πορεία της ομάδας του λιμανιού, ενώ η Άουγκσμπουργκ πέτυχε σπουδαίο «διπλό» στην Κολονία (1-0), η οποία έχασε πέναλτι με τον Μοντέστ. Έστω και με πολύ… ζόρι, η Αρσεναλ επικράτησε 3-1 της Σάντερλαντ στο «Εμιρεϊτς», για τη 15η αγωνιστική του αγγλικού πρωταθλήματος, και έρχεται στο «Γ. Καραϊσκάκης» για τον «τελικό» πρόκρισης με τον Ολυμπιακό με καλή ψυχολογία και ως δεύτερη της Premier League.

Οι «κανονιέρηδες» προηγήθηκαν στο 34΄ με γκολ του (πρώην «ερυθρόλευκου») Τζόελ Κάμπελ, μετά από ασίστ του Οζίλ, αλλά στην εκπνοή του ημιχρόνου οι φιλοξενούμενοι ισοφάρισαν με αυτογκόλ του Ζιρού.

Ο Γάλλος επιθετικός πήρε το… αίμα του πίσω στο 63΄, πετυχαίνοντας με κεφαλιά το δεύτερο γκολ των Λονδρέζων, για να διαμορφωθεί το τελικό σκορ στις καθυστερήσεις από τον Ράμσεϊ.

Η Αρσεναλ ανέβηκε δεύτερη, εκμεταλλευόμενη τα «στραβοπατήματα» των δύο ομάδων του Μάντσεστερ. Μετά τη Σίτι, που νωρίτερα δέχθηκε δύο γκολ στο πρώτο τέταρτο της αναμέτρησης και έχασε 2-0 από τη Στόουκ στο «Μπριτάνια», η Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ έχασε κι αυτή βαθμούς, μένοντας στο 0-0 με τη Γουέστ Χαμ στο «Ολντ Τράφορντ».

Όλα αυτά ουδόλως απασχολούν τη Λέστερ του Κλαούντιο Ρανιέρι, η οποία πέρασε άνετα από το «Λίμπερτι», 3-0 τη Σουόνσι, και έμεινε ξανά μόνη στην κορυφή. Στην αρχή φάνηκε ως κακόγουστο αστείο, αλλά πλέον δεν απέχει και πολύ από την πραγματικότητα. Η Τσέλσι, όχι απλώς δεν είναι σε θέση να υπερασπιστεί τον τίτλο της, αλλά κινδυνεύει σοβαρά να εμπλακεί στη μάχη του υποβιβασμού! Η ομάδα του Ζοζέ Μουρίνιο υπέστη άλλη μία ντροπιαστική ήττα, 1-0, από τη νεοφώτιστη Μπόρνμουθ μέσα στο «Στάμφορντ Μπριτζ», και πλέον απέχει μόλις τρεις βαθμούς από τη «διακεκαυμένη ζώνη». Ο Γκλεν Μάρεϊ πέτυχε στο 82΄ το μοναδικό γκολ του αγώνα, δίνοντας στην Μπόρνμουθ ένα απροσδόκητο -αλλά πολύτιμο- «τρίποντο».

Η Τότεναμ στο μεταξύ, έχασε την ευκαιρία να πλησιάσει τις ομάδες της πρώτης τετράδας, μένοντας στο 1-1 με τη Γουέστ Μπρομ στο «Χόθορνς».

As the first group stage of the Euroleague is nearing its conclusion, with two rounds of games left to play, it becomes ever clearer that Olympiakos and Panathinaikos are growing stronger by the week.

This week Olympiakos came from behind to down Armani Milano and consolidate its place at the top of its group, while Panathinaikos has beaten its group’s leader, Barcelona, and is mighty close not just to qualifying to the second round but also to clinching the third spot in the group.

Olympiakos had a hard time on Thursday beating Armani that led in the first half and threatened Olympiakos with a home loss. However the Greeks won 73-63 as their quality told despite the absence of Vassilis Spanoulis.

The Reds are also sweating over Matt Lojeski who got injured and is likely to sit out the next three or four weeks. They have also agreed terms with forward Shawn James who has left Bilbao Basket.

Panathinaikos broke a nine-game losing streak with Barcelona and beat the Catalans 93-86 on Friday after a spectacular home performance, led by its captain, Dimitris Diamantidis, scorer of 20 points. The Greens led throughout the game and fended off the Blaugrana fightback – that cut the distance to one point (71-70) – to score their fourth win in eight games.

The Greens will host Zielona Gora next and if they win they will probably need to defend a 35-point lead at Zalgiris Kaunas to finish third and avoid entering Olympiakos’s group in the second round.

In the Eurocup on Wednesday PAOK scored a huge win over Besiktas in Istanbul with a 75-73 score, Aris saw off Unics Kazan 76-70 and AEK went down 86-79 at Nizhny Novgorod.
