Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC in talks with FFA to play derby games at ANZ Stadium

Football Federation Australia are in discussions with Western Sydney and Sydney FC to play one of the three annual Sydney derbies at ANZ Stadium from next season.

FFA chief executive David Gallop is negotiating plans with both clubs to help maximise the potential of the cross-town rivalry, in a deal that could enable both clubs to split $500,000

At least 30,000 fans will be denied a chance to watch this Saturday’s Sydney derby at Pirtek Stadium, with the Wanderers opting to play in familiar surroundings in front of 19,000 fans rather than moving the game to Sydney Olympic Park to attract a larger crowd.

The FFA don’t have the authority to over-rule the Wanderers during the regular season, but they are in talks with Western Sydney and Sydney FC to work out an arrangement that could bring 70,000 people to a neutral venue.

The Wanderers and Sydney FC play three matches each season and the FFA hopes both clubs can host one game at their respective home grounds, with the third game to be played at ANZ Stadium.

The logistics of the exercise are still unclear. A gate-sharing option has been discussed for the clubs to split the profit from what is fast becoming the hottest show in town. Members of both clubs would have reciprocal rights if the match goes ahead at the Sydney Olympic Park venue.

“If we’re leaving people outside the stadium or they are unable to get a ticket, then we need to be looking at making sure they can see the game and maximise the potential that the game creates,” Gallop said on Monday.

“Subject to their contractual commitments, the [Wanderers] are also keen to explore those options. It’s certainly something we need to explore and make sure that both club’s financial positions are protected

“ANZ obviously has the capacity to allow more fans to see the games and is something we are keen to look carefully at.”

This year the Wanderers have two of the three games in their backyard, meaning Sydney FC might have to give up a financial gain next season for the long term benefit of both the club and the game in Sydney.

At the first Sydney derby on October 17 at Allianz Stadium a sold-out crowd of 41,213 turned out to watch Sydney FC’s come-from-behind 3-2 win.

It was the third consecutive 40,000-plus crowd for the derby at Allianz Stadium. Six of the seven contests have been sold out.

It is believed a game at ANZ Stadium could attract 70,000 but their has been some resistance from the Wanderers given the club’s priority is for an upgrade of Pirtek Stadium.

“I think the people of Western Sydney, whether it’s the Wanderers or another sport, I think the region deserves to be given the respect in terms of its infrastructure on a number of fronts,” Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas said.

“They deserve to have the same opportunities as everyone else. We’re not saying we need a 50,000-seat stadium but we need to do something more reflective of Parramatta being the second CBD. We’re focused on Parramatta Stadium. We maintain that the stadium needs to be significantly upgraded and, if not, a new stadium built on that site.

“We’re currently around the 19,000 mark in terms of memberships, which is phenomenal. But if we had a stadium that caters for 32,000 we’d be comfortable with that and we’d like to test the theory as to how big we can get.”

Gallop reiterated the importance of upgrading Pirtek Stadium for football in Sydney.

“We’ve said for a long time the Wanderers are going to bust out of Parramatta, if they haven’t already,” Gallop said.

“Parramatta needs to be renovated. We don’t believe that anything less than a 30,000 to 35,000-seat stadium is going to be anything other than a Bandaid solution.

“We support the general upgrade of stadiums across the city but we’ve certainly said for some time that Parramatta is a priority as far as the Wanderers are concerned and therefore for football.”

Madrid megastar Cristiano Ronaldo not coming Down Under for holiday, John Aloisi says

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t coming to Australia for a holiday.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t coming to Australia for a holiday.

CRISTIANO Ronaldo will go “full throttle” on his first visit to Australia, when Real Madrid headline an all-star international tournament in July, according to John Aloisi.

The former Spain-based striker predicts Real Madrid will splurge on at least one more megastar before they play at the MCG next July for the Australian leg of the 2015 International Champions Cup.

It was revealed that Real Madrid will hold a week-long training camp at AAMI Park, after the Spanish giants were on Monday confirmed as the first of the three participants.

MCG will host the three games, on July 18, 21 and 24, with Manchester City and Inter Milan set to follow.

World Cup golden boot winner James Rodriguez and fellow Brazil 2014 star Toni Kroos are among Real Madrid’s galaxy of stars, along with Welsh winger Gareth Bale and Croatian midfielder Luka Modric.

Aloisi, who scored 45 goals in six years with Spanish clubs Osasuna and Alaves, said the FIFA Ballon d’Or holder and his superstar teammates will be sharp on the eve of the 2015-16 domestic seasons.

“It’s two weeks out from the season so they’ll come out and Cristiano Ronaldo won’t hold back,’’ Aloisi said.

“In pre-season friendlies maybe the first few games they may rest players, but because it’s so late into their pre-season they need their match rhythm and competition.

“I’ve only touched on Ronaldo but there’s so many other players, including Toni Kroos who starred at the World Cup.

“They’ve come up another level this season and there’s probably only one other team you see competing with them and that’s Bayern Munich.

“They’ve got stars all over the pitch, each year they bring in a new star so I can just imagine come July they’ll have some other star that’s done something unbelievable in world football and they’ll bring him along.

“It’ll be interesting to see who they could sign. There’s no-one bigger than Ronaldo and Messi at the moment, but they seem to get someone every year.

“They could make a bid for Diego Costa for instance, and we could be the first ones to see him line up for Real.’’

The State Government has committed millions to secure the tournament and Sports Minister Damian Drum revealed that the final two teams are close to being unveiled.

ICC tournaments will be played in China and the USA around the same time, but Drum said Real’s arrival will ensure the MCG will be crammed in the heart of AFL season.

“It’s looking very positive with potentially a big EPL team and a big Italian team. It could be days away (from being announced), but certainly within a couple of weeks,’’ Drum said.

“Irrespective of whether they sell out, we’re expecting somewhere in the 70-80,000 crowds.

“There’s going to be 50-60,000 people here just to see Ronaldo.

“There’s been some modelling done on the Liverpool visit two years ago and the injection from there was around the $30m mark, so they’re conservatively saying somewhere between $50-70m, possibly even greater.”

Crystal Palace leave Liverpool reeling

cq5dam_web_235_137

Selhurst Park again proved an unhappy hunting ground for Liverpool as Crystal Palace earned a 3-1 win in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday.

Dwight Gayle, Joe Ledley and Mile Jedinak got the goals to ensure Brendan Rodgers’ side, who let a three-goal lead slip at the ground last season in a match that scuppered their Barclays Premier League title challenge, continued their poor start to the campaign.

It appeared Liverpool would exorcise the demons from last time out when Lambert, afforded a rare starting opportunity since returning to his boyhood team, converted his first goal for the club in the second minute.

But Gayle, whose double in that 3-3 draw proved so pivotal, levelled matters 15 minutes later as Palace found the ideal riposte.

Ledley and Jedinak finished the job with late strikes to heap further misery on Liverpool – whose bottom-half standing makes the lofty heights of 2013-14 seem an increasingly distant memory.

Palace, meanwhile, climbed out of the bottom three on goal difference following a first win in six league outings.

Liverpool flew out of the blocks to take the lead as Lambert, playing in place of the injured Mario Balotelli, justified his selection in the second minute.

It was the striker’s connection with Adam Lallana, so fruitful at Southampton before both completed off-season moves to Anfield, that made the difference as the former picked out the 32-year-old with a lovely ball in behind Martin Kelly. Lambert did the rest expertly, deftly controlling the ball before producing the coolest of finishes.

Thoughts that an easy afternoon might ensue were quickly put to rest, however, as Gayle levelled in the 17th minute.

Yannick Bolasie was the architect, his strike at the end of a driving run rattling the post to gift Gayle a tap-in from the rebound.

The match took on an end-to-end nature thereafter, with Bolasie again threatening when forcing Simon Mignolet into a solid stop with a powerful strike from distance.

He continued to prove the biggest threat, epitomised by him forcing Dejan Lovren into a superb block at the end of a fine counter-attack.

His next chance came just before the break, Bolasie striking just over from a tight angle having collected Jason Puncheon’s through-ball.

Liverpool created the first chance of the second period, Martin Skrtel volleying just wide after Palace failed to clear Steven Gerrard’s corner.

Yet Palace grew into the match again following that chance as they pressed forward with menace.

The hosts were unable to take advantage of good openings – something they almost paid for when Javi Manquillo side-footed just wide from 12 yards.

Liverpool were rueing that miss in the 78th minute, Ledley slotting through the legs of Mignolet following more good work from the outstanding Bolasie to send the home crowd into raptures.

Hopes of a comeback were quickly snuffed out, too, as Jedinak produced a stunning 25-yard free-kick that flew into the top corner after Skrtel had brought down Gayle with nine minutes remaining.

The full-time whistle confirmed Liverpool’s sixth top-flight defeat of the campaign and left a rain-soaked Rodgers with plenty to contemplate.

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock: “That was the best performance since I have come back to the club. I thought the weather helped. Our crowd were fantastic

“The first goal was disappointing but you can score too early sometimes. We created some good chances. I’m pleased to get three goals.

“I thought we got rewarded for playing good football. We looked really organised and difficult to break down.”

“I wouldn’t want to play against Bolasie. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do next, so how can the full-back?”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: “We made a really good start to the game – Rickie Lambert got his first goal with a terrific finish. We made the perfect start but failed to manage the game at 1-0.

“We are very, very disappointed with the performance and the result and as the manager it is something I need to take full responsibility for.

“Our confidence is not high at the moment, we do not see speed in the passing and we have to work even harder. It is a difficult moment, a tough time because of the results and we have to make sure we retain one focus – that of getting better and improving and very, very quickly because games come thick and fast.”

Arsenal – Manchester Utd 1-2: We can still do better, says Van Gaal after win over Arsenal

Louis van Gaal praised the performance of David De Gea in the United goal

Louis van Gaal believes there is plenty of room for improvement from Manchester United after their 2-1 Barclays Premier League win at Arsenal.

A Kieran Gibbs own goal and Wayne Rooney’s strike five minutes from time were enough to render Olivier Giroud’s stunning added-time effort a consolation. But United were indebted to goalkeeper David De Gea for keeping them in a first half that Arsenal completely dominated.

Van Gaal identified slack passing as the root of his team’s early problems and also criticised United lacking ruthlessness when they improved after the break.

“I was not pleased with the way we played in the first half but, of course, it was an away game against a top team and we have won,” said Van Gaal, after watching United triumph on the road for the first time in his tenure and move up to fourth place. “It was the right moment to win this game but I have to say that the first 35 minutes, we gave the ball away so easily – that is not possible for a top team.

“Because of that Arsenal created a lot of chances. Fortunately we have a very good goalkeeper and after the first 35 minutes you saw that we were coming back into the game. We created a few possibilities and at half-time I said that when we keep the ball and show confidence then we shall create many, many chances.

“We created at least three big chances – [Angel] Di Maria could have finished the game – but also two times where the [final] pass was easy to give to Di Maria and Wayne Rooney and the pass did not arrive. Those were not very difficult passes in my opinion so we have to improve that.”

United’s struggles during the opening stages were compounded by an ankle injury to Luke Shaw, further stretching defensive resources that forced Van Gaal to field young centre-backs Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair in a 3-5-2 formation.

“I hope there are players coming back from injuries because it is unbelievably difficult to create consistency in the team,” Van Gaal said. “Every week I have to change my line-up. I am the kind of coach who always has the same line-up and maybe changes one or two – not constantly [changing] so much players.

“Not the players but also the formation. That is not always good for the team.”

Wenger frustrated

Arsene Wenger was left to rue his Arsenal side not making their dominance count.

“It’s a game that we dominated for 80 per cent of the time and it’s a long time since we dominated games against Man United like we did today,” said Wenger, whose eighth-place side are 15 points behind leaders Chelsea. “But at the end of the day we were not efficient enough in the final third offensively and made a mistake at the back and they took advantage of it.”

“We had plenty of chances. Their keeper is man of the match. That tells you the story of the game.”

“We missed a few opportunities in the second half, even in the final 20 minutes. You have to be efficient in top-level games and we were not efficient enough in our good periods, but there were a lot of positives in the game today. Even if we are very, very disappointed, we have to keep that and rectify. At the moment defensively we are a bit naive.”

MCG set for Real Madrid soccer showdown

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid are coming to Melbourne as part of a feast of international soccer next July.

The international soccer friendlies, part of the International Champions Cup, will take place at the MCG on July 18-24.

The reigning European champions and FIFA Club of the 20th Century will be joined by an English Premier League team and Italian Serie A side.

Organisers said the other teams, rumoured to be Manchester City and Inter Milan, would be revealed in the next few weeks.

The long-rumoured event was confirmed on Monday morning by the Victorian Sports Minister Damien Drum.

Drum said he expected the three fixtures would generate around $50 million to the local economy.

He thanked AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan for scheduling their season around the tournament. The AFL has rights to the MCG during the winter.

“It has taken some negotiations but the goodwill in which these negotiations have taken place deserves credit,” he said.

The three teams will play in a round-robin tournament, which has been staged predominantly in North America for the last two years.

Ronaldo is the current holder of the FIFA Ballon d’Or handed out annually to the world’s best player.

“I got to play in Spain for six years and experience how big Real Madrid were,” said former Socceroo John Aloisi, who played in the Primera Liga for Osasuna and Alaves.

“They buy the biggest players in the world and make it work.

“Watching them live is another experience. I can’t wait.”

Also in Madrid’s squad is Colombia’s James Rodriguez, who was voted the best player at this year’s World Cup, France striker Karim Benzema, Wales winger Gareth Bale and Spain stars Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos.

Aloisi said he expected soccer to enjoy a year in the limelight, with the matches coming after Australia hosts the Asian Cup in January.

The matches also add to a bumper 2015 for the MCG – which is also hosting the Cricket World Cup final and a State of Origin on top of the AFL grand final.

Australian Socceroos:’Keep the faith’

'Keep the faith'

Tim Cahill has scored nine of the total 13 goals for the Socceroos under Postecoglou. Photo: AAP/Lukas Coch.

As ‘little details’ constricted the Socceroos from a win, the team and coach implore Australian fans to keep the faith.

The Australian media have been quick to sentence Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou’s reign the worst of any Socceroos coach ever, and as the nation’s collective disappointment reaches new heights, its hard to keep the faith.

But that’s exactly what star striker Tim Cahill has implored the country to do in the build-up to the Asian Cup in January.

“Australia just has to believe in what we’re trying to do. At home, in Melbourne, Sydney, we’ll have 40,000, everyone will be cheering us on and it will be a different story,” Cahill says. “These chances will turn into goals.”

Last Tuesday, the Socceroos left their last international friendly before the Cup defeated, with Japan getting two goals past Australia’s one.

Coach Postecoglou admitted little details were the team’s undoing.

“We had an excellent first half and even at the start of the second we were looking really good and comfortable, then we conceded the goal and it gave them the momentum and a little bit of belief.

“It was positive but ultimately we can’t defend like that at set pieces. It’s alright getting that part of the game right then being let down by the details.

“The players worked hard, the football was good but when those details are missing you pay the price.”

Postecoglou chose to keep Tim Cahill on the bench and favour an attacking trio of Greek Australian James Troisi, Robbie Kruse and Mathew Leckie.

While they showed promise, they struggled to create enough chances, which forced Postecoglou to unleash Cahill in the dying minutes of the game.

The decision worked wonders, as Cahill scored the team’s only goal, even if it was too late.

The reliance on Cahill has been worrying for the Socceroos, and Postecoglou would be the first to admit it.

Under Postecoglou, Australia have scored 13 goals. Cahill has nine of them.

Postecoglou will now consider his team’s make up for the Cup as he sends off his players to their respective clubs.

No position is safe on his squad, and Postecoglou has made it clear that players without game time will be the first to be left behind.

The Socceroos are currently rated 94th in the world, the lowest ranking the team has recorded in its history.

Postecoglou’s balance sheet is two wins, two draws and eight losses.
