• Last season’s runners-up got the win they needed to guarantee their progress thanks Raúl García’s opener and Mandžukić’s treble.

Group B
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad 2-2 Liverpool FC
• Rickie Lambert and Jordan Henderson put the Reds in front after going behind early on, but Georgi Terziev equalised towards full time.

FC Basel 1893 0-1 Real Madrid CF
• Cristiano Ronaldo’s fourth goal of the group stage was enough for a victory that rubber-stamps top spot for the holders.

Group C
FC Zenit 1-0 SL Benfica
• Danny’s late effort consigned Benfica to a third successive group stage exit and ensured Zenit’s hopes of progress go to the final day.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen 0-1 AS Monaco FC

Champion’s League: Liverpool held 2-2 by Ludogorets

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad had Georgi Terziev to thank after his 88th-minute equaliser denied Liverpool FC what would have been a vital Group B victory in Sofia and earned the hosts a rousing point – although it was still not enough to keep his team in qualifying contention.

Instead of losing 2-1 to a Liverpool side playing catch-up on second-placed FC Basel 1893, with Rickie Lambert and Jordan Henderson having replied to Dani Abalo’s third-minute opener for the Bulgarian title holders, Terziev nodded past Simon Mignolet after Svetoslav Dyakov flicked on a Wanderson corner. The late leveller could not save Ludogorets from elimination but nonetheless damaged Liverpool’s chances as only a home win against Basel – who are two points better off – on matchday six will now suffice.

If the evening started with local fans discussing the merits of coach Georgi Dermendzhiev replacing injured forward Roman Bezjak with midfielder Dani Abalo and not striker Younes Hamza, the Spaniard put a quick end to the debate. Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet could not handle a shot from Marcelinho and the makeshift attacker took his opportunity for 1-0. The 27-year-old Abalo had also scored in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield.

After clearing their heads, Liverpool produced a quick riposte. Ludogorets defended a long ball with fatal hesitancy and Lambert headed beyond Vladislav Stoyanov with two defenders stood watching. It was the England forward’s first UEFA Champions League goal.

The highly motivated hosts reacted positively, belying their bottom ranking in the section, and were nearly rewarded when Kolo Touré almost turned an Aleksandar Aleksandrov cross into his own net. Troubled by Ludogorets’s rapid attacking players, Brendan Rodgers’ men were living dangerously.

However, backed by about 2,000 travelling fans, the visitors resisted, improved and even managed to claim a half-time lead. With 37 minutes played, Raheem Sterling was too fast for the right side of the home back line and put in a perfect pass to Henderson, who did well to squeeze the ball over Stoyanov.

Come the second half Ludogorets attempted to regain the initiative but were not as menacing as in the opening 45. A Virgil Misidjan effort and Fábio Espinho free-kick were their only real chances, whereas the fleet-of-foot Sterling again turned provider for the Reds, only Lambert’s header was blocked and, following up, Henderson fired over from seven metres. Stoyanov also denied the Liverpool winger in a one-on-one situation before, in a late twist to the plot, Terziev conjured the Ludogorets equaliser from a corner.

Club Atlético de Madrid destroy Olympiacos FC 4-0

Mandžukić takes Atlético through in style

Mario Mandžukić struck a hat-trick as Club Atlético de Madrid sealed their place in the round of 16 thanks to an emphatic Group A victory over Olympiacos FC.

Knowing a win would confirm their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with a game to spare, the hosts made a fast start, Juanfran enjoying particular success down the right. The defender twice crossed for Mandžukić in the opening five minutes, although the Croatian was unable to apply the finishing touch, while a Raúl García header brought a smart stop from former Atlético goalkeeper Roberto, who enjoyed a mixed night on his return to the Vicente Calderón.

Last season’s runners-up did not have to wait long to make the breakthrough, however, as Roberto cleared a back-pass straight to Juanfran inside the penalty area. The full-back unselfishly squared for García, who clipped a subtle finish over the sprawling keeper at the near post.

Éric Abidal volleyed over as the visitors offered a rare foray forwards in search of an immediate riposte, but it was Atlético who were turning the screw. Cristian Ansaldi forced a smart Roberto stop from distance before Tiago fired over from the edge of the box. A second goal was not long in coming, Ansaldi sending in a low delivery from the left that was completely missed by Alberto Botía, allowing a grateful Mandžukić to tap in from close range.

Roberto then denied Arda Turan on the stroke of half-time as the Group A leaders set a tone that would continue into the second 45 minutes. With Atlético dominating possession, their Turkish winger was allowed space on the right just past the hour, and his precise cross found Mandžukić for the forward’s second goal of the night.

Three minutes later Mandžukić completed his hat-trick, nodding in a Gabi free-kick before departing to a standing ovation. His replacement Antoine Griezmann had an effort disallowed for offside, but not even that could dampen spirits on an excellent night for the Spanish champions.

Melbourne Victory move into line with top overseas clubs with massive youth movement

untitled

MELBOURNE Victory’s admission in to the Victorian National Premier League competition next season will see it open their doors to dozens of talented youngsters.

Both Victory and Melbourne City will play their youth teams in Victoria’s second-tier league in 2015 and Victory announced on Wednesday that it will also field a team in the under 20s competition.

The Victorian season runs from about March to September, while the National Youth League – which pits youth teams from most A-League clubs against each other – traditionally runs from October to late February.

It means that Victory will have up to 46 players training for and playing in competitive matches for 12 months of the year, moving it in to line with clubs from top European and South American countries.

The youth teams will continue to be based at AAMI Park alongside the senior team players and coaching staff, while recruitment – particularly for the under 20s side – will now begin in earnest.

“Entry into the NPL enhances the club’s commitment to providing the best high performance environment we can for the development of some of the most talented young players in Victoria, and the country,” Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said.

“It also provides a defined pathway through an A-League club environment for the advancement of their careers.

“The benefit to young players is they will be coached and educated through the Melbourne Victory system and have the opportunity to work with elite coaches, mentors and conditioning and medical experts throughout their time with us, to be the best they can be.”

No fear at Melbourne City, says Jason Hoffman

City fighting to cut Heart strings

Melbourne City defender Jason Hoffman, left, challenges Ali Abbas of Sydney FC last Saturday. Source: Getty Images

BILLIONAIRE owners, a high profile and top-class signings — they all should add up to a winning culture and therefore greater success on the football field. But it hasn’t quite worked out that way for struggling Melbourne City. Well, not yet anyway.

For whatever reasons — fear has been suggested as one — the team formerly known as Melbourne Heart can’t get it quite right in the A-League this season.

Tipped to be a major player after the City Football Group, owners of Premier League giants Manchester City, bought them, the Victorians have struggled to make an impact.

A paltry return of one win and three draws in their opening seven games has put pressure on coach John van ’t Schip and his players to turn things around, and quickly, leading to unkind comparisons to the mediocre results endured under the Heart moniker.

Last week’s 2-1 loss to Sydney FC brought much introspection, with van ’t Schip saying he believes his team is playing with fear.

“The belief is sometimes not there. Having a bit of fear. With fear, you’re never going to win games,” the coach said in a brutal assessment.

It is not a belief Jason Hoffman shares. Asked if it was wrong for people to think that because Manchester City bought the club that the team would inevitably win every game, the Melbourne City defender said he didn’t agree the ownership change had affected the mindset of the players.

“To be honest, I don’t think we are playing with fear,” Hoffman said. “Yes, there has been a lot of expectation on us but we are not feeling it.

“At the end of the day people will say positive and negative things about us regardless. As far as people outside club … whatever is said about us, good or bad, it is not affecting the playing group.

“We have high expectations anyway to play good football and get the right results. We have played some good football (this season) and we can be better.

“When we continue to get better then the results will come.”

Hoffman, a striker converted to right-back by van ’t Schip, said the players hadn’t dwelled on previous seasons, when the club had struggled for results, although he admitted one win from seven was “unacceptable”.

“We have a few new players this season and they have an extremely positive outlook on how things are going,” he said.

“If the players that were here last year, me being one of them, tend to drift into thinking about, ‘this is how things might have went last season’, then the new players have been excellent in trying to make sure the mentality is strong and that we move forward.

“Of course, one win in seven is nowhere near where we want to be as a club. There is a lot of responsibility on us. I feel we have not played anywhere near what we should and that is unacceptable.

“We have spoken about it and we are working hard to right things. We are not far off but (being) not far off isn’t quite good enough to come up as a response.”

Despite the team leaking silly goals, Hoffman said he was enjoying the switch to defender.

“I feel it has been a great move for me,” the former Olyroo said. “As a centre-forward I felt at times I was not getting the right results for the team. When you feel you are not contributing then you get down on yourself a little.

“One of my biggest attributes is getting up and down the line, so playing right-back gives me that option. I owe a lot to John van ’t Schip. He has given me a lifeline.”

ΜΑΛΜΕ: Olsen; Tinnerholm, Johansson, Helander, Ricardinho; Eriksson, Adu, Halsti, Forsberg; Rosenberg, Kiese Thelin.

ΓΙΟΥΒΕΝΤΟΥΣ: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Padoin; Marchisio, Pirlo, Pogba; Vidal; Tévez, Llorente/Morata.

Μετά την Ρεάλ… ποιος;

ΛΟΥΝΤΟΓΚΟΡΕΤΣ: Stoyanov; Júnior Caiçara, Terziev, Moţi, Minev; Dyakov, Fábio Espinho, Alexandrov, Abalo, Marcelinho; Hamza.

ΛΙΒΕΡΠΟΥΛ: Mignolet; Manquillo, Škrtel, Lovren, Johnson/Moreno; Lallana, Gerrard, Henderson; Coutinho; Lambert, Sterling.

ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΑ: Vaclík; Schär, Suchý, Safari; Xhaka/Degen, Frei, Elneny, Gashi; Gonzalez, Zuffi; Embolo.

ΡΕΑΛ: Casillas; Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Varane, Marcelo; Kroos, Isco, James; Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema.

ΖΕΝΙΤ: Lodygin; Anyukov, Garay, Lombaerts, Criscito; Witsel, Javi García, Rondón, Shatov, Danny; Hulk.

ΜΠΕΝΦΙΚΑ: Júlio César; Maxi Pereira, Luisão, Jardel, André Almeida; Samaris, Enzo Pérez, Niko Gaitán, Eduardo Salvio; Anderson Talisca, Lima.

ΛΕΒΕΡΚΟΥΖΕΝ: Leno; Hilbert, Toprak, Spahić, Boenisch; L Bender, Rolfes; Bellarabi, Çalhanoğlu, Son; Kiessling.

ΜΟΝΑΚΟ: Subašić; Fabinho, Carvalho, Raggi, Elderson; João Moutinho, Toulalan, Kondogbia; Ferreira-Carrasco, Berbatov, Dirar.

ΑΡΣΕΝΑΛ: Martínez, Chambers, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Gibbs; Arteta, Ramsey; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sánchez, Santi Cazorla; Welbeck.

ΝΤΟΡΤΜΟΥΝΤ: Weidenfeller; Piszczek, Ginter, Subotić, Durm; Kehl, Gündoğan; Grosskreutz, Kagawa, Mkhitaryan; Aubameyang.

ΑΝΤΕΡΛΕΧΤ: Proto; Vanden Borre, Mbemba, Deschacht, Acheampong; Defour/Kljestan, Tielemans; Najar, Praet, Conté; Mitrović.

ΓΑΛΑΤΑΣΑΡΑΪ: Muslera; Alex Telles, Chedjou, Semih Kaya, Tarık Çamdal; Felipe Melo, Hamit Altıntop, Selçuk İnan; Sneijder, Yekta Kurtuluş, Burak.

Champion’s League: Preview Ludogorets v Liverpool

Preview: Ludogorets v Liverpool

While PFC Ludogorets Razgrad have “no pressure and can play freely” according to Georgi Dermendzhiev, Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool FC must recover lost confidence.

Georgi Dermendzhiev says Ludogorets have “no pressure”
Home coach describes it as “one very tough game”
Liverpool have not scored in Group B since beating Ludogorets 2-1 on matchday one
Liverpool have failed to qualify from the group stage twice in eight previous campaigns
Brendan Rodgers: “If we play well, we’ll get a result”

Permutations: Ludogorets (3pts) v Liverpool (3)
Ludogorets will be out of Europe with a loss, and cannot finish in the top two if they draw or Basel win.
Liverpool can ensure a top-three finish with victory, but even then they will definitely need three points against Basel on 9 December to have a chance of coming second.

Possible lineups
Ludgorets: Stoyanov; Júnior Caiçara, Terziev, Moţi, Minev; Dyakov, Fábio Espinho, Alexandrov, Abalo, Marcelinho; Hamza.
Out: Bezjak (hernia)
Doubtful: none

Liverpool: Mignolet; Manquillo, Škrtel, Lovren, Johnson/Moreno; Lallana, Gerrard, Henderson; Coutinho; Lambert, Sterling.
Out: Sturridge (thigh), Balotelli (hamstring), Flanagan (knee), Suso (groin)
Doubtful: Sakho (thigh)

Georgi Dermendzhiev, Ludogorets coach
This will be one very tough game for us and I hope the fans will enjoy it. There will be no pressure on us, we’ll play freely and give our best to win. We have already gained a lot of experience, we now have a serious routine [at this level]. It won’t be fatal for us if we lose.

Liverpool have so many quality players, I think their problems are more psychological. Our first game in the group stage was at Anfield and probably our team was unknown. Now it is different. Brendan Rodgers knows us better and will do everything to win the game.

I believe in my players. We made mistakes in our last match against Basel, when we lost 4-0, but I hope we won’t make mistakes this time. The supporters in Sofia have been fantastic to us and we try to make them delighted again.

Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool manager
We have enormous respect for Ludogorets. They were excellent at Anfield in the first game and maybe they should have won more points. They have surprised a lot of people. They are technically a very good side.

We arrive here seriously motivated. We know if we play well, we will get a result. I just need to get us back to a level of confidence that allows you to perform. Losing can be the making of you. You learn from it. That is what we are aiming to do. When you don’t have so much coaching time, it is mostly psychological what you are trying to achieve. If we focus on that too much, there is no way we could play to our level.

Steven Gerrard is a unique case. I judge him on merit. People are expecting him to be the type of player he was ten or 12 years ago and that isn’t going to be the case. He has been slowly adapting to a role I thought would be excellent for him. He is a wonderful, wonderful player, but he isn’t going to get 15 goals and 14 assists a season any more. I can safely say he is the best I have ever worked with in terms of football commitment and intelligence. There is nothing sentimental about me picking him. He’s a unique case as he knows every decision is made with the best interest of Liverpool. He can still contribute to a high level. It is my job to manage that.

Champion’s League: Preview Atlético Madrid v Olympiacos

Preview: Atlético v Olympiacos

Olympiacos FC coach Míchel does not expect “flowers and applause” as he visits his home town but he could earn a hero’s return if his side win at Club Atlético de Madrid.

The teams are first and second in Group A going into matchday five
Diego Simeone is keen to avoid the pitfalls of their last meeting
Atlético have taken maximum points since losing 3-2 at Olympiacos in September
Atlético have won 19 of their last 21 games at home in UEFA competition
Olympiacos coach Míchel’s record against Atlético with Real Madrid: W15 D5 L5

Permutations: Atlético (9pts) v Olympiacos (6)
Atlético will be through with a win – or with a draw if Juventus lose.
Olympiacos can only progress on matchday five if they win and Juventus draw.

Possible lineups
Atlético: Moyá; Juanfran, Godín, Giménez, Ansaldi; Gabi, Tiago, Koke, Arda Turan; Griezmann, Mandžukić.
Out: Miranda (hamstring)
Doubtful: Mandžukić (neck)

Olympiacos: Roberto; Elabdellaoui, Botía, Abidal, Masuaku; Maniatis, Milivojević, N’Dinga, Afellay; Domínguez; Mitroglou.
Out: Giannoulis (abdomen)
Doubtful: Durmaz (thigh)

Míchel, Olympiacos coach
It would be great if we could repeat our display against Atlético in Athens. We will insist on doing some of the things that got us a good result there. If you look at our games in the UEFA Champions League, our game plans are always very similar.

I would be very surprised if Atlético’s fans welcomed me with flowers and applause. It’s normal they pick on me to support their team. Simeone’s work is irreproachable and Atlético are an unwanted rival for any team.

This competition is letting us play at the same level as other great sides. We are playing very well but it is not always enough. We were not expected to be among the best but we are and that means we are doing well. We are playing against great players and even winning matches. I like my players.

Diego Simeone, Atlético coach
Olympiacos are a very strong team at home and our defeat there was no surprise to me. They competed very well in Malmo and Turin too and we expect more of the same. We have to focus on the present, though, and tomorrow’s match is the only thing that matters to us.

With intensity we will have the performance we want. Mario Mandžukić wants to play despite his injury. He is a very brave boy and gives us a lot of strength. It would be very difficult to tell him not to play.

Olympiacos are dangerous from set pieces and we will have to find a better way of avoiding problems [than on matchday one]. It’s important to work on an opponent’s strengths. I appreciate Míchel’s praise. He is doing a very good job in Greece.
