Η Τότεναμ ξεπέρασε την ήττα-σοκ από την Κρίσταλ Πάλας και με το 4-2 επί της Μπέρνλι στο Κύπελλο, οι «Σπερς» πέρασαν στην επόμενη φάση των «32» χάρη στην ρεβάνς του «White Hart Lane». Πλέον, ο μέχρι πρότινος αντίπαλος του Αστέρα Τρίπολης στο Europa League, θα αντιμετωπίσει τη Λέστερ.

Ten-man PAOK performed a stunning comeback to beat host Kalloni Lesvou 2-1 on Wednesday and stay within reach of the top, while third-placed Panathinaikos scored its second home win in four days.

With leader Olympiakos securing three points without having to play against Niki Volou that has withdrawn from the Super league, PAOK had to beat Kalloni at Mytilini to stay in touch with the Reds.

However at half-time things looked bleak for the Thessaloniki giant as it trailed 1-0 to a Nikos Kaltsas goal and was a man down due to the red card shown to Ergys Kace. Facundo Pereyra, the influential Argentine, turned things around for PAOK, through scoring twice in eight minutes before the hour mark to give the visitors the lead which their goalkeeper, Charles Itandje preserved by a saving a penalty eight minutes from time.

PAOK has therefore stayed two points behind Olympiakos, while Panathinaikos remained a further four points behind through its hard-fought 1-0 win over Levadiakos, courtesy of a Mladen Petric spectacular header.

PAS Giannina came from 2-0 down to snatch a 2-2 draw at fourth-placed Asteras Tripolis, while OFI was happy just to play the game at Panetolikos that the host won 3-1: The Iraklio team was threatened with expulsion from the league unless it withdrew its case from civil courts against the Super League and arranged to pay its dues to three players. It did and the game went ahead.

The game that did not take place after all was that between Ergotelis and Panionios. A part of the Pankritio stadium’s roof at Iraklio was removed by the fierce winds on Tuesday, forcing the postponement of the encounter. The Super League has not yet announced when and where the match will take place.

In other games on Wednesday, Panthrakikos downed visiting Kerkyra 1-0 and Xanthi shared an entertaining 2-2 draw with Veria.

On Thursday Platanias hosts Atromitos.

IT’S meant to be the Titanic clash of the group, but Robbie Kruse has warned that the Socceroos’ game with South Korea on Saturday could be sabotaged by a “disgrace” of a pitch at Brisbane Stadium.

Fresh from a man of the match display in Australia’s 4-0 win over Oman on Tuesday that secured qualification from the group, Kruse warned that Korea will give the Socceroos their sternest test yet at the Asian Cup as both sides vie to finish top.

Returning to Suncorp Stadium for only the second time since quitting Brisbane Roar in 2011, Kruse said he was keen to play for a third time in eight days in front of his extended family as he bids to make missing the World Cup through injury “a distant memory”.

Concerns before the tournament about the Suncorp surface have been realised on a patchy and uneven field, and Kruse said it had long been substandard.

“I’ve seen the pitch, it’s a disgrace and not up to the standard it should be,” Kruse said.

“Brisbane has never had a good surface for as long as I can remember and I don’t understand why.

“Melbourne was very good (at AAMI Park) — obviously rugby league plays hard on that (Suncorp) surface, they have Test matches and a lot of concerts as well but it’s not good. It makes it difficult to play football.

“It’s the same for both teams, we’ll both be wanting to play football on it which will be difficult but it’s no excuse in the end.”

South Korea have been far less convincing than Australia so far, beating both Oman and Kuwait by just a single goal each — though their squad was heavily affected by a virus that left several players incapacitated in Canberra on Tuesday night.

But Kruse said he knew first-hand what a threat they would pose, especially having to beat Australia to leapfrog them in the group.

“Obviously Korea are one of the strongest teams in Asian so it’s going to be very tough,” he said.

“I’m very familiar with the team — I play with possibly their best player at Bayer Leverkeusen, Heung-Min Son, he’s fantastic. He got rested along with a number of players (v Kuwait) and I heard they were lucky to scrape through with a win.

“Kuwait hit the post, the same as Oman, and people say these teams are no good but they pushed Korea all the way. They’ll be fresh for this game, and I’m sure there’ll be more changes to face us.

“First and foremost we’re through to the next round and now we can focus on a good performance in Brisbane. I’ve heard it’s close to sold out and I’ve had to get so many extra tickets for my friends and family. It will be a great occasion for me and hopefully I can back up and play again.

“But that’s two games for me in four or five days so we’ll have to see. My whole rehab I was focusing on the Asian Cup. If the team does well then the World Cup will be a distant memory for me, that’s my goal.”

Μπορεί να βρέθηκε να χάνει από το 7′, μπορεί έμεινε με 10 παίκτες από το 37ο λεπτό, όμως ο ΠΑΟΚ δεν τα παράτησε, έκανε την ανατροπή στη Μυτιλήνη απέναντι στην Καλλονή (Καλλονή – ΠΑΟΚ 1-2) και συνέχισε να κυνηγάει τον Ολυμπιακό από το -2.

Νωρίτερα ο Παναθηναϊκό πήρε μια… επαγγελματική νίκη απέναντι στον Λεβαδειακό (Παναθηναϊκός – Λεβαδειακός 1-0) στη Λεωφόρο.

Στους υπόλοιπους αγώνες αν και προηγήθηκε με 2-0 ο Αστέρας παραχώρησε ισοπαλία στον ΠΑΣ Γιάννινα (Αστέρας Τρίπολης – ΠΑΣ Γιάννινα 2-2) στην Τρίπολη.

Η Ξάνθη αν και αγωνίστηκε με 10 για πάνω από μια ώρα αγώνα κατάφεραν και ήρθαν ισόπαλοι (Ξάνθη – Βέροια 2-2) με τη Βέροια στα Πηγάδια.

Εντυπωσιακά συνέχισε ο Παναιτωλικός, ο οποίος κέρδισε με σχετική ευκολία τον ΟΦΗ (Παναιτωλικός – ΟΦΗ 3-1). Ο Πανθρακικός νίκησε… στα πέναλτι την Κέρκυρα (Πανθρακικός – Κέρκυρα 1-0).

Νίκη – ανατροπή του ΠΑΟΚ με 10 παίκτες από το 37′ στη Μυτιλήνη

Με 10 παίκτες από το 37′ (κόκκινη ο Κάτσε) και μεγάλη ανατροπή στο δεύτερο μέρος, ο ΠΑΟΚ επικράτησε 2-1 της Καλλονής στη Μυτιλήνη, στο πλαίσιο της 18ης αγωνιστικής του πρωταθλήματος της Σούπερ Λιγκ. Ο Καλτσάς στο 7′ έβαλε μπροστά τους γηπεδούχους, αλλά οι Θεσσαλονικείς «γύρισαν» το ματς με τα δύο γκολ του Περέιρα στο 50′ και 58′. Μάλιστα, ο οι γηπεδούχοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να ισοφαρίσουν στο 81′ όταν κέρδισαν πέναλτι, αλλά ο Ιτάνζ νίκησε τον Μανούσο από την άσπρη βούλα.

Μετά από 3 ήττες στα 4 τελευταία ματς που έδωσε μακριά από την Τούμπα, η σημερινή αναμέτρηση ήταν «χωρίς αύριο» για τον ΠΑΟΚ. Η ομάδα του Αναστασιάδη έδειξε χαρακτήρα στο δεύτερο μέρος και με τη βοήθεια του Ιτάνζ, έφυγε με το «τρίποντο», χάρις στο οποίο έμεινε «ζωντανή» στη μάχη του τίτλου (-2 από την κορυφή), ενώ αντίθετα η Καλλονή εξακολουθεί να απογοητεύει. Μετά το εξαιρετικό της ξεκίνημα η ομάδα του Ματζουράκη παρουσιάζει μία άκρως πτωτική πορεία, η οποία εάν συνεχιστεί δεν αποκλείεται να φέρει και πρόβλημα παραμονής στην κατηγορία!

Η Καλλονή ξεκίνησε ιδανικά το ματς, καθώς στο 7΄ άνοιξε το σκορ με το σουτ του Καλτσά έξω από την περιοχή που αιφνιδίασε τον Ιτάνζ (η μπάλα βρήκε στο πόδι αμυντικού του ΠΑΟΚ κι άλλαξε λίγο πορεία). Το γκολ των γηπεδούχων «άνοιξε» για τα καλά το παιχνίδι, με τους φιλοξενούμενους να προσπαθούν για την ισοφάριση χωρίς, όμως, να τα καταφέρουν. Καλύτερη στιγμή για τον ΠΑΟΚ στο πρώτο ημίχρονο ήταν η φάση του 19ου λεπτού, όταν από γύρισμα του Αθανασιάδη, οι Περέιρα και Σαλπιγγίδης δεν κατάφεραν να σκοράρουν από κοντά.

Το ματς στα πρώτα 45 λεπτά «σημαδεύτηκε» από τη φάση του 37ου λεπτού όταν ο διαιτητής Μήτσιος απέβαλε με κόκκινη κάρτα τον Κάτσε. Δευτερόλεπτα νωρίτερα ο ρέφερι του συνδέσμου Ηπείρου δεν έδωσε πασιφανές φάουλ – φράγμα του Κειτά στον Αλβανό μέσο του ΠΑΟΚ έξω από την περιοχή της Καλλονής και εκείνος αντέδρασε βρίζοντας (όπως φάνηκε από το τηλεοπτικό ριπλέι).

Η απόφαση του διαιτητή ήταν σωστή, ωστόσο, όλος ο πάγκος του «δικεφάλου» μπήκε στο γήπεδο και ο Άγγελος Αναστασιάδης κάλεσε τους παίκτες και τους συνεργάτες του να κατευθυνθούν στ’ αποδυτήρια. Προς στιγμή δημιουργήθηκε πανικός, αλλά με την παρέμβαση των ψυχραιμότερων οι Θεσσαλονικείς επέστρεψαν στον πάγκο και το ματς συνεχίστηκε.

Η αριθμητική υπεροχή της Καλλονής όχι μόνο δεν φάνηκε στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο, αντίθετα λειτούργησε υπέρ του ΠΑΟΚ που ήταν κυριολεκτικά… άλλη ομάδα. Στα πρώτα 8 λεπτά της επανάληψης ο «δικέφαλος» είχε φέρει τα πάνω κάτω στο ματς με τον Περέιρα, ο οποίος με δύο γκολ στο 50′ και 58′ έβαλε μπροστά τους φιλοξενούμενους (1-2).

Οι γηπεδούχοι ήταν… άφαντοι στον αγωνιστικό χώρο και δύο φορές ο Περέιρα απείλησε την εστία του Χογκ, στο 65′ και 76′ για να «καθαρίσει» το παιχνίδι.

Με όλους τους παίκτες κάτω από τη μεσαία γραμμή ο ΠΑΟΚ δεν απειλήθηκε καθόλου από το συγκρότημα του Γιάννη Ματζουράκη, παρ’ όλα αυτά η Καλλονή είχε τη μεγάλη ευκαιρία να ισοφαρίσει στο 81′, όταν κέρδισε πέναλτι σε ανατροπή του Χουάνμα από τον Κωνσταντινίδη.

Ο Μανούσος ανέλαβε να το εκτελέσει, αλλά ο Ιτάνζ με την επέμβαση του αγώνα, (σ.σ. έκανε το ίδιο και στην Τρίπολη με τον Αστέρα) απομάκρυνε και χάρισε την τεράστια νίκη στην ομάδα του.

Ο Πέτριτς έκανε… του κεφαλιού του κόντρα στον Λεβαδειακό

«Ποδαρικό» με νίκη στο δεύτερο γύρο έκανε ο Παναθηναϊκός, που επικράτησε 1-0 του Λεβαδειακού στο «Απόστολος Νικολαΐδης», στο πλαίσιο της 18ης αγωνιστικής του πρωταθλήματος της Σούπερ Λίγκας. Το γκολ των «πρασίνων» πέτυχε ο Πέτριτς στο 29′.

Χωρίς να κάνει ευκαιρίες, ο Παναθηναϊκός ήταν ο απόλυτος κυρίαρχος στα πρώτα 45 λεπτά. Με καλή κυκλοφορία και πίεση ψηλά οι «πράσινοι» δεν επέτρεψαν στους παίκτες του Λεβαδειακού να απειλήσουν την εστία του Στιλ και το σουτ του Μάντζιου στο 26΄ (μπλόκαρε ο γκολκίπερ των γηπεδούχων) ήταν η μοναδική τελική προσπάθεια που είχαν οι φιλοξενούμενοι στο α΄ μέρος.

Από κει και πέρα η ομάδα του Γιάννη Αναστασίου προσπάθησε από τις πτέρυγες να δημιουργήσει ρήγματα στην άμυνα του Λεβαδειακού, αλλά οι σέντρες που βγήκαν δεν ανησύχησαν το Σηφάκη, καθώς οι αμυντικοί του ανταποκρίθηκαν πλήρως. Μία φάση αδράνησαν οι Βοιωτοί, στο 29΄ και το «πλήρωσαν» από τον Πέτριτς, ο οποίος μετά το φάουλ του Πράνιτς σκόραρε με κεφαλιά από ελεγχόμενη θέση οφσάιντ (1-0).

Στο 40΄ ο διαιτητής Λιαχούδης αν και ήταν κοντά στην φάση «έκλεισε τα μάτια» στο πεντακάθαρο πέναλτι που έγινε στο Μπεργκ και το ημίχρονο έκλεισε χωρίς άλλες φάσεις.

«Φτωχό» και το δεύτερο μέρος από πλευράς ευκαιριών. Ο Παναθηναϊκός τον πλήρη έλεγχο του αγώνα, αλλά όσο δεν «καθάριζε» την υπόθεση νίκη, τόσο περισσότερο αγχωνόταν και παράλληλα οι γηπεδούχοι ήλπιζαν ότι θα τους δινόταν η ευκαιρία να ισοφαρίσουν. Η ομάδα του Παντελίδη απείλησε στο 90΄ με το Βούκσεβιτς, αλλά σε γενικές γραμμές είχε παθητικό ρόλο στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του παιχνιδιού, που τελικά κρίθηκε με το γκολ του Πέτριτς.

Ο πρωτοπόρος Ολυμπιακός, θα προσθέσει τρεις «ξεκούραστους» βαθμούς στην συγκομιδή του, καθώς ο αγώνας με την Νίκη Βόλου έχει ματαιωθεί, λόγω της -ουσιαστικής- αποχώρησης των «νεοφώτιστων» από το πρωτάθλημα.

Αναβολή στο Εργοτέλης – Πανιώνιος
Λόγω των ισχυρών ανέμων δεν θα θα διεξαχθεί τελικά σήμερα ο αγώνας του Εργοτέλη με τον Πανιώνιο για λόγους ασφαλείας, στο πλαίσιο της 18ης αγωνιστικής του πρωταθλήματος της Σούπερ λίγκας. Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos are playing the type of football we want to see and growing in belief with each 2015 Asian Cup outing.  

There is a long way to go and it is worth remembering we beat Uzbekistan by six in 2011, before losing in the final to Japan. Nevertheless the performance against Oman, which was never allowed to play, was excellent.

One thing shone through which is emerging as a major factor of this home Asian Cup and that is the greater intensity of play from Australia that the Gulf nations, in particular, cannot contend with.

This is where Ange and his coaching staff have read the scenario very well, understanding that Middle East teams play at a speed well below the A-League – becoming of their predominantly hot climate – and struggle when pressed and made to play at a higher speed for the full duration of a match.

Faster thought, faster execution for 90 minutes was a challenge beyond both Kuwait and Oman.

Australia sought to restart play as quickly as possible, to minimise the ball being out of play and to monopolise the ball wherever possible so that, by the second half, the opponents were spent.

Therefore, it was the Socceroos’ work without the ball that was fundamental to the result.

The opening goal was a very well-planned set piece, pulling Omani defenders away from the far post and placing Matt McKay close to the line for the final touch, thereby avoiding having to beat Ali Al-Habsi with a header from an acute angle.

I noticed Postecoglou congratulating Aurelio Vidmar immediately after the goal, which indicates the auxiliary technical staff are contributing in aspects of the game as well.

Well done guys, these are the details that make a huge difference in international football.

With Korea Republic being pushed hard by Kuwait and Oman, there is now a significant decisive physical edge to the Aussies for game three.

Well done also to the Socceroos conditioning staff.

My impression of Korea has been that it is underdone physically, perhaps underestimating the tournament level, with players cramping late in game one and clearly tiring in game two.

This will be a huge factor in Brisbane, and a confidence builder for Australia to know it can push opponents physically right til the last minute.

What is most interesting is that the style of play of the Socceroos mirrors closely the components of play we now see regularly in the A-League, especially the immediate pressing of the ball. This shows that the domestic competition is evolving nicely in line with Australia’s physical and cultural strengths and preparing players for the next level.

From what I have seen, only Iran and Japan can play at this level. We will know a lot more about Korea in a few days’ time. What is clear is the gulf between Asia’s usual World Cup suspects and the rest.

So far, so good. The team system is working very well. The Socceroos have found it easier to break down Kuwait and Oman than the likes of Chile, Spain, Netherlands and Belgium, so the team is showing the confidence gained from playing at a higher level then stepping back to the Asian Cup group stage.

Ange has the team playing the type of football we want to see and growing in belief game by game.

Importantly, he has them the type of football the Australian public will resonate with and that will increase support for the tournament along the way.

Ανακοινώθηκε την Τετάρτη από την ΕΠΟ το πρόγραμμα για τους πρώτους αγώνες της φάσης των «16» του κυπέλλου Ελλάδας. Οι αγώνες στη φάση των «16» είναι διπλοί και τα πρώτα ματς θα διεξαχθούν το διάστημα 20-21 Ιανουαρίου, ενώ οι ρεβάνς μία εβδομάδα αργότερα (27-29/1).

Australia has qualified for the Asian Cup quarter-finals after a scintillating 4-0 win over Oman in Sydney on Tuesday night.

Only days after their 4-1 rout against Kuwait, the Socceroos produced an even better showing to end Oman’s progression hopes and have fans of the host nation dreaming of what may be at this tournament.

The goals came from four sources – Matt McKay, man of the match Robbie Kruse, Mark Milligan and Tomi Juric – meaning all eight of Australia’s goals this tournament have come from different players.

Confidence may have been raised before the match after the convincing result against Kuwait, but Oman, fresh from a tough 1-0 loss against tournament hopeful South Korea, was expected to provide a more substantial test.

As in their first match of the tournament against Kuwait, the Socceroos started slowly as a combination of nerves and a rigid Oman defence made the opening stages scrappy and tense.

The question was whether Australia would stay true to the philosophies of coach Ange Postecoglou under pressure or look for an easy way out – that question was emphatically answered in the first half.

It took a set piece to get the Socceroos up and running, with Trent Sainsbury’s knock-down header providing the easiest of tap-ins for the recalled McKay in the 27th minute.

From that point on, Australia completely took over.

Massimo Luongo, fresh from a man-of-the-match performance against Kuwait, was dazzling in midfield, turning opponents and seeking out team-mates with an ease not seen in a Socceroos shirt since the pomp of Harry Kewell.

It was an exquisite lofted through pass in the 31st minute from Luongo that found Kruse for Australia’s second, with the Bayer Leverkusen man doing the pass justice with a fantastic touch with his thigh, before holding off a defender to convert underneath Ali al Habsi.

The chances kept coming for Australia. Tim Cahill would go close on a number of occasions and would be a constant horror for the Oman defence, while the wing combination of Mat Leckie and Kruse was at its dynamic best.

The third seemed inevitable, and so it proved – despite a slight delay thanks to some bemusing refereeing.

Luongo and Kruse combined again down Australia’s right flank, with the latter delivering a delightful cross accross Oman’s six-yard box, finding an umarked Milligan who hammered home on the volley just seconds before the half-time whistle.

It would not count though, with the referee ignoring the obvious advantage to award the Socceroos a penalty for a clear foul on Cahill in the lead up.

The mistake would matter little though, with Milligan himself converting the spot kick to completely kill off the game before the half-time whistle sounded.

Little changed in the second half, despite Australia taking off two of its stand out performers in Cahill and Luongo early.

The fourth came in the 70th minute and to nobody’s surprise, with another Leckie breakaway this time producing a precise, outside-of-the-boot cross to the awaiting Juric who made no mistake.

Australia was fast, physical and frighteningly unrelenting and Oman had no answer. There is no doubt Australia has bigger challenges ahead of it, but at present the Socceroos fear nobody.

Ο Λιονέλ Μέσι, νικητής την τετραετία 2009-2013, ήταν στην τριάδα, αλλά στην κρίση των αρχηγών και προπονητών εθνικών ομάδων, καθώς και των δημοσιογράφων που μετείχαν στην ψηφοφορία, έπαιξε σίγουρα ρόλο το γεγονός ότι δεν κατάκτησε κάποιον τίτλο.

Ο Μανουέλ Νόιερ στέφθηκε Παγκόσμιος Πρωταθλητής με την εθνική Γερμανίας, πήρε και το νταμπλ στην πατρίδα του με τη Μπάγερν, όμως δεν κατάφερε να επικρατήσει του Ρονάλντο και να γίνει ο πρώτος τερματοφύλακας μετά τον θρυλικό Λεβ Γιασίν (1963) που κατακτά το βραβείο.

Battling A-League club Newcastle Jets has suffered two off-field blows, with chairman Ray Baartz and chief executive Robbie Middleby both resigning.

The club is owned by the Hunter Sports Group, who are looking to sell it and are conducting a mid-season review. They plan to complete the review before the Jets resume their campaign on January 24 against Adelaide, following the break for the Asian Cup.

Middleby, who will stay until the end of January, said in a statement: “I will use the next few weeks to support the mid-season review process. Making this decision now will allow me to give an honest and independent appraisal of where the club is at and provide recommendations of how it could best move forward.”

Middleby, who was born in Newcastle, described his time at the club as challenging.

“This decision has been a very difficult one but one that I have made in the best interest of the club and especially my family,” he said.

“I have, and will always support this club and wish the members, staff and players all the best for the future.”

“I hope that this decision can aid the transition to new ownership and allow the club to start a new chapter.”

The club will now begin the process of appointing a new CEO.

Former Socceroo Baartz, who was also born in Newcastle, is also working on the review.

“Football in the Hunter region has always been a major part of my life and it has been a privilege to be involved with the Jets,” Baartz said.

“I wish the fans and everyone involved at the club all the best for the remainder of the season and in particular the ongoing future of this great club.”

The Asian Football Confederation’s biggest tournament runs throughout January, with Australia providing the platform for this year’s competition.
