Ισόπαλο έληξε το ματς του Πανιωνίου με τον Παναθηναϊκό στη Νέα Σμύρνη (Πανιώνιος – Παναθηναϊκός 1-1), στο πλαίσιο της 19ης αγωνιστικής της Σούπερ Λιγκ.

Βαριά ήττα γνώρισε ο, «πληγωμένος» το τελευταίο διάστημα, ΟΦΗ στη Βέροια (Βέροια – ΟΦΗ 4-1) από την τοπική ομάδα.

Σε ένα ματς το οποίο θα… ξεχαστεί εύκολα, η Κέρκυρα και Ξάνθη έμεινα στη «λευκή» ισοπαλία (Κέρκυρα – Ξάνθη 0-0).

Άφησε βαθμούς στην Πλατεία ο Παναθηναϊκός

Πολύτιμους βαθμούς έχασε ο Παναθηναϊκός, που αναδείχθηκε ισόπαλος 1-1 με τον Πανιώνιο στη Νέα Σμύρνη, για την 19η αγωνιστική της Σούπερ Λίγκας. Οι γηπεδούχοι προηγήθηκαν με γκολάρα του Μπουμάλ στο 33΄, ισοφάρισε ο Μπεργκ στο 78΄, ενώ ο Στιλ κράτησε -τουλάχιστον- τον βαθμό της ισοπαλίας αποκρούοντας πέναλτι του Κολοβού στο 87΄.

Με ασύλληπτη βολίδα του Σενεγαλέζου, Ολιβιέ Μπουμάν, οι γηπεδούχοι άνοιξαν το σκορ στον στο 33΄. Τόσο πριν, όσο και για το υπόλοιπο του ημιχρόνου, ο Παναθηναϊκός έμοιαζε βγαλμένος από εφιάλτη.

Χωρίς πάθος, χωρίς επιθετική διάθεση, πλησίασε μόνο μία φορά κοντά, όταν ο Μπεργκ δεν κατάφερε να “πιάσει” καλά το σουτ μετά από σέντρα του Μπαϊράμι. Παράλληλα, κινδύνευσε άμεσα και με δεύτερο γκολ, σε κομβικό σημείο, όταν στο 41΄ ο Ιμπαγάσα έχασε μοναδική ευκαιρία να σκοράρει από κοντά με κεφαλιά, μετά από μεταβίβαση του Μπουμάλ.

Η είσοδος του Καρέλη στην ανάπαυλα, έδωσε επιθετική πνοή στον Παναθηναϊκό. Ο διεθνής άσος νικήθηκε από τον Γιαννακόπουλο σε τετ α τετ στο 51΄, ενώ οι “πράσινοι” άρχισαν να πιέζουν ασφυκτικά, αλλά να μην μπορούν να αξιοποιήσουν τις τελικές τους προσπάθειες (Πέτρις 63΄ και 74΄, Πράνιτς 66΄).

Μέχρι που ο Μάρκους Μπέργκ έλυσε το πρόβλημα, ισοφαρίζοντας στο 78΄ μετά από ασίστ του Κλωναρίδη. Στο 87΄ ο Λουκ Στιλ εξελίχθηκε σε μεγάλο πρωταγωνιστή της αναμέτρησης καθώς απέκρουσε πέναλτι του Κολοβού.

Στην παράβαση είχε υποπέσει ο Σίλντενφελντ, που ανέτρεψε τον Γιάννου. Θα ήταν άδικο για τον Παναθηναϊκό, αφού ήταν η μοναδική φάση στην οποία “πάτησαν περιοχή” οι παίκτες του Πανιωνίου σε όλο υο β΄ ημίχρονο.

Την Κυριακή, ο πρωτοπόρος Ολυμπιακός υποδέχεται τον Παναιτωλικό και είναι το λογικό φαβορί για την νίκη, όπως και ο ΠΑΟΚ που θα φιλοξενήσει τον Πλατανιά.

Ο Ατρόμητος θα πάρει «ξεκούραστα» τρεις βαθμούς, καθώς ο αγώνας με την -αποχωρήσασα- Νίκη Βόλου ματαιώθηκε, ο ΠΑΣ Γιάννινα έχει προβάδισμα -λόγω έδρας- για τη νίκη υποδεχόμενος τον Πανθρακικό, ενώ ο Αστέρας Τρίπολης δοκιμάζεται στην έδρα του Λεβαδειακού σε μία δύσκολη αναμέτρηση.

Σε περίπατο μετέτρεψε η Τσέλσι την αναμέτρηση του “Λίμπερτι” με την Σουόνσι, καθώς της επιβλήθηκε 5-0. Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ και Λίβερπουλ συνέχισαν νικηφόρα την πορεία τους στην Premier League.

Η Σουόνσι φημίζεται για την ισχυρή της έδρα, όμως αυτό δεν επιβεβαιώθηκε την 22η αγωνιστική, καθώς η Τσέλσι της επιβλήθηκε 5-0 και αύξησε τη διαφορά από την Μάντσεστερ Σίτι (σ.σ. παίζει την Κυριακή με την Άρσεναλ) στους πέντε βαθμούς.

Το ματς άρχισε με τους καλύτερους οιωνούς, αφού μόλις στο 1ο λεπτό, έπειτα από λάθος του Γκίλφι Σίγκουρντσον, ο Οσκάρ άνοιξε το σκορ με σουτ εκτός περιοχής, ενώ λίγα δευτερόλεπτα αργότερα, ο Σίγκουρντσον σημάδεψε το δοκάρι του Πετρ Τσεχ, που προτιμήθηκε από τον Τιμπό Κουρτουά.

Το γεγονός ότι η Σουόνσι άγγιξε ποσοστό κατοχής 80% δεν ήταν αρκετό για να περιοριστεί η δράση των “μπλε” και δη του Ντιέγκο Κόστα, ο οποίος σκόραρε στο 20′ και το 34′, προτού ο Οσκάρ “ξαναχτυπήσει” στο 36′.

Μεγάλος άτυχος της αναμέτρησης ήταν ο Γουίλιαν, αφού σημάδεψε δύο φορές το δοκάρι του Λούκας Φαμπιάνσκι (στο 29′ και το 43′), ωστόσο αυτό που έχει σημασία είναι ότι η ομάδα του Ζοζέ Μουρίνιο έστειλε ένα πολύ αισιόδοξο μήνυμα στους φίλους της ενόψει της συνέχειας, δεδομένου ότι ο Αντρέ Σίρλε έβαλε το κερασάκι στην τούρτα, τρία μόλις λεπτά μετά από την είσοδό του στον αγωνιστικό χώρο (79′).

Κίνηση-ματ έκανε ο Λούις φαν Χάαλ κατά τη διάρκεια της ανάπαυλας, αφού έβγαλε τον Χουάν Μάτα και πέρασε τον Φελαϊνί, ο οποίος έμελλε να σημειώσει το μοναδικό γκολ της αναμέτρησης (στο 58′ με κοντινό σουτ, έπειτα από γύρισμα του Αντόνιο Βαλέντσια).

Μία καλή στιγμή κατέγραψε η ΚΠΡ για την ισοφάριση (στο 75′ με τον Βάργκας), ενώ στον αντίποδα, ο φιλότιμος Φαλκάο έχυσε την καρδάρα με το γάλα εξαιτίας της ανεπανάληπτης ευκαιρίας που έχασε στο 76ο λεπτό, προτού ο Τζέιμς Γουίλσον κλειδώσει τη νίκη των “κόκκινων διαβόλων” στο 94′.

Η επιστροφή του Ραχίμ Στέρλινγκ μετά από τις διακοπές στην Τζαμάικα και η απουσία του Στίβεν Τζέραρντ λόγω τραυματισμού ήταν οι πιο σημαντικές ειδήσεις που αφορούσαν το αρχικό σχήμα της ομάδας του Μπρένταν Ρότζερς.

Το πρώτο γκολ του Φάμπιο Μπορίνι στην Premier από τον Απρίλιο του 2013 (με κοντινή προβολή στο 24ο λεπτό) χάρισε το προβάδισμα στους “κόκκινους”, οι οποίοι απειλήθηκαν ουκ ολίγες φορές στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο, αλλά χάρη στο διαγώνιο σουτ του νεοεισελθόντα Ρίκι Λάμπερτ (στο 79′) κλείδωσαν τη νίκη που τους προώθησε στην έβδομη θέση της βαθμολογίας.

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 17 Premier League visits to Villa Park

Liverpool increased the pressure on Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert by beating his struggling side to secure a third away league win in succession.

The threat of a pre-match protest by Villa fans did not materialise but the home side went behind when Fabio Borini prodded in a Jordan Henderson cross.

Christian Benteke had a chance to level but his powerful strike was saved.

Liverpool survived a number of other scares before Rickie Lambert arrowed in an 18-yard shot to secure victory.

The Reds have lost only one of their last 10 league games and earned the three points without captain Steven Gerrard, who had not been risked after going off with a tight hamstring during last Saturday’s win at Sunderland.

Villa, who improved after the break, failed to score for a fifth league game on the trot and they are now three points above the relegation zone, with their next two top-flight games against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Some Villa fans had threatened a protest by boycotting their seats in the Holte End for the first eight minutes of the match to mark each year that Randy Lerner had owned the club.

Villa’s Lambert had urged against such action and the supporters appeared to have listened to his request with hardly an empty seat to be seen.

However, the home side found themselves behind after striker Borini guided home an inviting Henderson cross to score his first goal of the campaign.

Villa could have fallen further behind but Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling failed to take two promising chances for the Reds.

Keeper Brad Guzan also kept Villa in the game when he tipped a Martin Skrtel header against the post.

Carles Gil, signed by Villa this week, came on to make his debut and his arrival signalled a spell of pressure from the home side.

However, Benteke had a well-struck half-volley saved by fellow Belgium international Simon Mignolet, while Baker headed a corner just over.

Benteke also volleyed wide before Lambert gave Liverpool the breathing space they needed by scoring his third goal of the season with a low shot into the bottom corner.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

“It was always going to be a difficult game. Aston Villa are a hard team to try to break down but we were very complete in our performance.

“We passed the ball around really well at times and our counter-attack was very good and we probably should have exploited that more than we did.

“Importantly, when we had to defend at important moments of the game we stood up to the challenge.”

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert:

“The second half I thought we were excellent. I didn’t think there was too much in it in the first half.

“We lost a poor goal but the second half was relentless pressure from us and their goalkeeper has probably kept them in it with the save from Christian Benteke.

“I don’t think anyone could fault us for the way we played in the second half.

“We just have to keep doing what we did today, keep getting the chances and they will go in.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is planning to throw out the history books ahead of his side’s Barclays Premier League match at Manchester City on Sunday.

The north London outfit suffered a 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium last term and have struggled against the clubs who have finished among the BPL’s top four in recent seasons. But Wenger believes Arsenal are approaching a turning point, and says the past will matter little against City, who lie two points adrift of leaders Chelsea, this weekend.

“You have many games when you know you will be judged on your potential,” he said. “Manchester City is one of them. Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are other games that people have a close eye on to judge your potential.

“The history will not play a big part in this game. It’s the performance of the day that will play the biggest part and the only important part. I believe we have consistency. Last year, we did not win the championship only for that reason. We did not perform in the top games away from home. I believe we have the potential now to be much more stable and to show that we can do it.

“For many years [our record in the biggest games] was our strength and, in the last two years, it is true that it has been a weakness. I think we are mature enough now to rectify it.”

Manuel Pellegrini, who added to his squad with the signing of Wilfried Bony from Swansea City this week, could be boosted by returns to the starting XI for Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero. But Samir Nasri has been ruled out for up to a month with a calf problem and Edin Dzeko (thigh) remains a doubt.

Bony is at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast, along with Yaya Toure, but it is Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez who is foremost in Pellegrini’s thoughts ahead of this weekend.

“Alexis is a very good player,” the City manager said of his Chilean compatriot, who scored twice against Stoke City last weekend to take his tally of Barclays Premier League goals to 12. “He is having a very good season in England. It is not easy for a player in his first season here to score so many goals.

“Alexis is repeating what he did in the last two seasons at Barcelona and scoring a lot of goals. I am very happy for him because he is a young player and very enthusiastic player and improving.”

Mathieu Debuchy (shoulder), Mikel Arteta (ankle), Danny Welbeck (thigh) and Jack Wilshere (ankle) are all missing for Arsenal, who could welcome back Kieran Gibbs after a heel injury.

Australia suffered a significant setback to their hopes of winning the Asian Cup on home soil after succumbing to a hard-fought defeat to South Korea in Brisbane which puts them on the path to an early date with tournament favourites, Japan.

It was a performance that warranted much more than the end result for Australia who outplayed South Korea for the overwhelming majority of the match but left with little more than pride. A young squad brimming with confidence stumbled at their biggest hurdle yet, one that now puts the Socceroos on course to play the reigning champions in the semi-final and keeps them away from Sydney until the grand final, should they reach it. What is now assured is that Australia will remain in Brisbane to play China on Thursday night in the quarter-final of the competition.

Their first real test of the tournament showed just how strong the Socceroos can become, while it also highlighted a lack of experience that was yet to be exposed this month. South Korea’s tactical discipline – one neither Kuwait or Oman possessed – restricted Australia’s freedom to roam forward with the considerable comfort seen in past games.

Four changes made by coach Ange Postecoglou, including leaving Tim Cahill and Mark Bresciano on the bench, gave a chance for Aziz Behich, Tomi Juric, Nathan Burns and James Troisi to show why first team places are so competitive. Wellington Phoenix striker, Burns, was eager to make his chance count and tested South Korea’s goalkeeper early on before displaying his defensive commitment with a heavy challenge on Park Joo-ho that ended the defender’s evening prematurely.

It was symbolic of Australia’s hunger but also of their defensive discipline. In the 32nd minute, forward Lee Jeongheyop wasn’t tracked as he squeezed between Trent Sainsbury and Matthew Spiranovic and when Lee Keun-ho supplied a perfectly weighted cross, only the most slight of touches was required to score.

It stunned the home crowd but brought out the best in the Socceroos. After dinking past an opponent, James Troisi fired a low shot from inside the box that sat perfectly in the corner of the net. Only, it was the wrong side of the goal. Fans celebrated and so too did the Stadium operators, attributing Troisi a goal on the video screen before realising the conflicting response on the field.

Australia spurned an even greater chance of equalising immediately after the break when Tomi Juric blazed a tap-in over the bar.

While Australia struggled to contain the expansive play of the Koreans, they caused plenty of problems with the speed and power of their attack. The introduction of Matthew Leckie for Troisi added more fuel to their forward line that was growing increasingly confident which each half chance and advances halted only by fouls.

Shots from Leckie, darting runs by Burns, the mobility of Massimo Luongo and the ever-present threat of Juric toyed with South Korea but the final delivery or shot seemed to always be diminished by the structural discipline of their defence. At the other end, the introduction of Bayer Leverkusen star Song Heung-min created a nervous situation for Australia who were more susceptible to conceding than ever before.

Desperation lead to an abandonment of Australia formation as Cahill replaced a midfielder Matt McKay and Robbie Kruse came on for Burns, who almost scored with his last touch of the ball.

His replacement was denied by a superb reflex save by Kim Jin-hyeon who secured South Korea’s win by palming away Kruse’s shot from inside the box.

An equaliser never arrived, instead a blow for Australia when Spiranovic was cautioned for a clumsy foul on Jeongheyop that rules him out of Australia’s quarter final date with China.

In Saturday’s other Group A match Oman beat Kuwait 1-0 in front of 7499 fans in Newcastle.

 Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan or China? Should the Socceroos have any fear of their potential Asian Cup quarter-final rivals from Group B, which crosses over with Australia’s Group A?

Much water has yet to flow under the bridge before the line-ups for the sudden-death ties are determined with virtually all positions up for grabs save China’s.

The Alain Perrin-coached side, having come from behind to defeat Uzbekistan in Brisbane on Wednesday evening, is now guaranteed top spot in Group B even if it falls to North Korea in their final game.

The Chinese have six points, the Uzbeks and the Saudis three apiece after both beat the North Koreans.

The most either could garner would be six, but because both have lost to China (the Saudis 1-0, the Uzbeks 2-1) neither could displace the team from the People’s Republic at the top because the first tiebreaker used in this competition to separate teams on the same number of points is their head-to-head record.

That means that if Australia loses to South Korea in their final group match on Saturday evening (also in Brisbane), they will finish second, and stay in Queensland where they would meet the Chinese.

However, if Australia can beat or even draw with the South Koreans, they would top the group. A win would give the Socceroos nine points to South Korea’s six, while a draw would leave both on seven points.

The Socceroos would be top by virtue of a superior goal difference, which currently stands at plus seven compared to South Korea’s plus two – Australia having beaten Kuwait 4-1 and Oman 4-0, while South Korea could manage only 1-0 wins over the same opponents.

The Uzbeks have had a muted tournament so far. The former Soviet Republic struggled to put away the ultra-defensive North Koreans in their opening game, winning 1-0 in driving rain in Sydney. They took the lead against the Chinese but surrendered the advantage, going down 2-1.

Their only hope of qualifying is if they beat the Saudis when they meet at AAMI Park on Sunday, as their goal difference of zero (from a 1-0 win and a 2-1 defeat) is worse than Saudi Arabia’s. After the latter’s 4-1 thumping of North Korea on Wednesday their goal difference is plus two, so a draw would suit the Green Falcons fine as it would mean they go through.

On the evidence of the performances of both those sides the Socceroos should not be quaking in their boots if they come up against them. They should respect them, of course, but certainly not fear them.

Their record against the Uzbeks in Asian Cups and World Cup qualifiers is good – the Socceroos defeated Uzbekistan 6-0 in the semi-final of the last tournament in Qatar – while an experimental Australian side saw off Saudi Arabia 3-2 in their recent friendly in London.

The Saudis squandered a number of chances against the North Koreans and showed plenty of character to come back having conceded the first goal. In the past they might not have had that resolve; they certainly didn’t in the last Asian Cup, when they collapsed after things started going against them and exited winless after the first phase.

This time round new coach Cosmin Olaroiu has got the Saudis playing with self-belief and the Romanian feels that they deserved to have beaten China, not lost, on a Brisbane surface that he and many others have been highly critical of.

That could be an issue for the Australians, as they too would prefer to play on a better surface; at present AAMI Park is in much better condition than Suncorp.

While the Saudi side has no little flair and attacking threat – Nawaf Alabid, Salem Aldawasari and Mohammed Al Sahlawi all caused plenty of problems for the hapless North Koreans on Wednesday evening – it can be flaky at the back.

The North Koreans began brightly, took the lead and for at least 25 minutes looked the team most likely to score as they breached the Saudi rearguard often, forcing goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah to earn his match fee.

But the Arab side finally got on top once they drew level before the break and in the end were worthy winners after tiring out the Koreans, passing up on numerous opportunities to post an even more convincing scoreline.

Olaroiu was delighted with the outcome on Wednesday, but quickly counselled against any complacency.

“I am happy with the game and the performance. We used our spirit, we scored goals. Now we have to forget and think quickly about the next game against Uzbekistan.

“We played better against China. If we scored the penalty things would have been different.

“I was confident because it is difficult to play the way North Korea play the entire game.  I knew our ball possession would make them tired and concede more spaces. We played with two strikers which gave more space in the middle. They were dangerous on counter-attacks.

“The pitch and stadium was excellent, we were the more technical team … but the Uzbek game, it will be a different game, different team, a different way to play.”

North Korea’s final match with the Chinese – the embattled and secretive country’s closest politically ally – is now a dead rubber. But asked whether the North Koreans would essentially cede the game to one of the few countries in the world with which it has relations by playing youngsters and developing players, coach Jo Tong-sop insisted his side would be trying to win.

“Our skills and levels are not high enough. We have to develop as quick as possible to make better players in the future. We have one more match and we will do our best to win this match, it is the spirit of fair play and football,” he said.

“Nobody would be happy with that result. I think the start of the match was okay. Our defensive strategy was working very well until we conceded the second goal.

“The players were not concentrated on the match enough. They had some mental stress for the second goal because it came so easily,” the coach said through an interpreter, also thanking the crowd for calling the name of the nation’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un during the match.

Εμφατική νίκη 4-0 επί του Ομάν

Στους “8” του Ασιατικού Κυπέλλου προκρίθηκαν οι σούπερ-Σοκκερούς του Άγγελου Ποστέκογλου, μετά την εμφατική νίκη του 4-0 επί του Ομάν, στο προχθεσινό παιχνίδι του Σίδνεϊ.

Σε χρόνο-ρεκόρ, ο ικανότατος τεχνικός της Εθνικής μας ομάδας, πρόλαβε να διορθώσει τα -λίγα- αρνητικά στοιχεία του πρώτου αγώνα (4-1 το Κουβέιτ) και με τρεις αλλαγές στην ενδεκάδα, προκρίθηκε με ρυθμούς… Βραζιλίας, στην επόμενη φάση των “8”, όπου θα αντιμετωπίσει το Ουζμπεκιστάν ή την Κίνα.

Αν εξαιρέσει κανείς ένα μέτριο 10λεπτο στο ξεκίνημα, όπου οι Σοκκερούς έψαχναν ρυθμό και… “εκκίνηση” και ο Ματ Ράιαν με εκπληκτική απόκρουση (3′) κράτησε ανέπαφα τα δίχτυα μας, η συνέχεια ήταν, το καλύτερο ίσως παιχνίδι της Αυστραλίας του Άγγελου και ίσως ένα από τα καλύτερα των πολλών τελευταίων ετών!

Σπουδαία άμυνα, δημιουργικό και κεφάτο κέντρο και μια επίθεση που έβγαζε… “φωτιές”, ήταν τα στοιχεία που συνέθεταν ένα σπουδαίο σύνολο, με τους παίκτες του Ομάν, να παρακολουθούν τους ξέφρενους ρυθμούς μας, ανήμποροι να αντιδράσουν.

Με τον… ελληνικής καταγωγής Τζέισον Ντέιβενσον (γιο του βετεράνου Άλαν και της Ελληνίδας μητέρας Έφης), στη θέση του Αζίζ Μπάιτζ, τον Ματ Μακέι στη θέση του Τροΐσι και τον Μίλιγκαν στη θέση του τραυματία αρχηγού, Μίλε Γέντινακ, οι Σοκκερούς χρειάστηκαν μόλις 27′ λεπτά για να πάρουν προβάδισμα στο σκορ.

Μια κεφαλιά του Σέινσμπουρι, έστειλε τη μπάλα στα πόδια του Μακέι, ο οποίος με πλασέ εξ επαφής έκανε το 1-0.

Μια “μαγική” μπαλιά του Μάσιμο Λουόνγκο στο 30′, βγάζει σε θέση βολής τον Κρουζ, με τον “Γερμανό” μας να δείχνει ότι συνέρχεται μετά την πολύμηνη απουσία του λόγω τραυματισμού, σκοράροντας άνετα για το 2-0.

Στο 45+3′, ο Μίλιγκαν σκοράρει για το 3-0, αλλά ο Ιάπωνας ρέφερι Ριούζι Σάτο, το ακυρώνει γιατί έχει δώσει πέναλτι σε ανατροπή του Καχίλ.

Την εκτέλεση αναλαμβάνει ο αρχηγός της Βίκτορι και το 3-0 είναι γεγονός και.. επίσημο.

Την ωραιότερη στιγμή του αγώνα την φύλαγαν για το 78′ οι Σοκκερούς.

Ο Μάθιου Λέκι φεύγει βολίδα από αριστερά και με απίστευτη σέντρα με το δεξί, στέλνει την μπάλα στα πόδια του Τόμι Γιούριτς για το τελικό 4-0!

Δίκαιο σκορ αποτέλεσμα μιας μεγάλης εμφάνισης.

Η δουλειά του Άγγελου αρχίζει να καρποφορεί και τα στόματα των “ειδικών” κλείνουν το ένα μετά το άλλο…

Αν δεν είχαν βιαστεί να κάνουν αυστηρή κριτική, ίσως να είχαν αποφύγει και το δημόσιο ρεζιλίκι τους!

FEATURE: Goal Australia’s Iain Strachan and Goal Korea’s Yonghun Lee examine the two teams’ prospects ahead of their Group A clash at the Asian Cup on Saturday.

Australia – Iain Strachan

1. How have the team performed in their first two Asian Cup matches?

Going into the tournament, if you’d have offered Ange Postecoglou or any Socceroos supporter two wins, with eight different scorers and only one goal conceded, they’d have snapped your hand off.

Other than a slightly slow start and somewhat shaky defensive showings during the opening stages of both matches, there’s really no criticism that can be levelled at the national team.

They played with energy, intent, created plenty of chances and took a good amount of them, easing the goal-scoring burden on Tim Cahill.

Massimo Luongo has announced himself as a force to be reckoned with, Robbie Kruse looks back to his best and even the absence of injured skipper Mile Jedinak wasn’t felt in the dismantling of Oman.

2. Who was most impressive player in the first two matches?

Luongo has been the driving force behind Australia’s flying start, but right-back Ivan Franjic, attacking midfielder James Troisi and hard-running wide forward Mathew Leckie also deserve plenty of credit, while goalkeeper Mathew Ryan has pulled off some terrific saves.

There’s barely been a bad performance across the two games, but the energy and work-rate of Luongo, Franjic, Troisi and Leckie in particular has been instrumental in the success of Postecoglou’s high-tempo pressing game.

3. Who will be the most important player in the game against South Korea and why?

If Troisi, rested against Oman, returns to the starting XI alongside Luongo, the pair will be crucial in ensuring Australia use the ball wisely when they get it. The Socceroos won’t be able to dominate possession in the same way they did against Kuwait and Oman, potentially resulting in fewer chances and a need to be more efficient in the final third.

4. Which opponent is the biggest threat in the game against South Korea and why?

Shutting down midfielder Ki Sung-yueng will be an important task for the Socceroos forwards and attacking midfielders. When the hosts are out of possession, they will need to swarm the Swansea City midfielder and prevent him from pulling the strings and setting the tempo in the middle of the park.

Further forward, a rearguard that has yet to be properly tested in open play must be wary of Son Heung-min, who – as far as Australia and their fans are concerned – will hopefully still be well below his best after picking up the illness that has affected the South Korea camp, forcing him to miss the game against Kuwait.

5. Prediction/Expectation

Expectations are sky high after such a good start to the competition and fans will expect another convincing win on Saturday night. Postecoglou, his coaching staff and journalists, well aware of South Korea being significantly better than Kuwait and Oman, will want to sign off with another victory, although a draw will be enough to secure top spot in the group.
South Korea – Yonghun Lee

1. How have the team performed in their first two Asian Cup matches?

Two wins and two clean sheets are acceptable but the mood is not good because performances have been far below expectations. We can say two wins is a very luck result. Head coach Uli Stielike has led the team for only a few months so it is natural that South Korea haven’t reached their full potential.

They had been better in previous friendly matches, trying to play as Stielike wanted; keeping the ball well and trying to attack.

That hasn’t been the case so far at the Asian Cup. The defence is as unstable as ever and the forwards haven’t impressed either. The condition of players is very poor due to the virus that has swept through the camp. The medical and fitness staff failed to keep the players in peak condition at the World Cup and it is happening again. As a consequence, the media are disappointed and critical.

2. Who was most impressive player in the first two matches?

Ki Sung-yueng absolutely stands out thanks to his precise passing. But with an unstable defence and dull attack, there’s not much he can do on his own. At least they had more of the ball than Oman in the opening game and much of that was down to Ki.

3. Who will be the most important player in the game against Australia and why?

It should be Son Heung-min. He’s in poor condition after picking up the virus but he needs to be at best if South Korea want to score. He was impressive against Oman and his absence was felt against Kuwait as Korea managed only two shots in the first half.

4. Which opponent is the biggest threat in the game against Australia and why?

Robbie Kruse, if he plays. Both teams have already qualified, so this could be played at a slightly slower tempo and Ange Postecoglou may rest the Bayer Leverkusen man. But Kruse, should he feature, will want to keep showing what he can do and his eagerness for goals will be a threat to Korea’s shaky rearguard.

5. Prediction/Expectation

I don’t expect Korea to beat Australia to top the group and it’s not even important now. What they need is a lift from an encouraging performance. A 2-2 draw with an exciting game would be nice.

Ούτε στα πιο τρελά του όνειρα δεν είχε φανταστεί ο Φερνάντο Τόρες τέτοια επιστροφή στην ομάδα της καρδιάς του.

Ο 30χρονος επιθετικός οδήγησε την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης σε άνετη πρόκριση στους προημιτελικούς κυπέλλου Ισπανίας, πετυχαίνοντας και τα δύο γκολ στο 2-2 της ομάδας του εναντίον της Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης, στο “Σαντιάγκο Μπερναμπέου”.

Ετσι, σε συνδυασμό με τη νίκη τους (2-0) στον πρώτο αγώνα, οι “ροχιμπλάνκος” πήραν την πρόκριση που τους φέρνει αντιμέτωπους με τη Μπαρτσελόνα που επικράτησε με 4-0 στην έδρα της Έλτσε και πέρασε στην επόμενη φάση με συνολικό σκορ 9-0.

Ο Τόρες, ο οποίος δεν είχε σκοράρει ποτέ στην καριέρα του στην έδρα της “Βασίλισσας”, βρήκε δίχτυα με γκολ από τα… αποδυτήρια και στα δύο ημίχρονα (1΄,46΄). Τα γκολ της Ρεάλ πέτυχαν οι Σέρχιο Ράμος (20΄) και Κριστιάνο Ρονάλντο (54΄).
