Below-par Olympiakos succumbs to Efes

Below-par Olympiakos succumbs to Efes

Not at his best on the night: Olympiakos captain Vassilis Spanoulis

On Wednesday PAOK suffered a 102-68 drabbing at the hands of Khimki in Russia for the Eurocup.

The winning streak of Olympiakos in the second group stage of the Euroleague ended on Thursday in Turkey, as Anadolu Efes outclassed the Reds in the second half to win 84-70.

Olympiakos had the upper hand for most of the first half, which it finished on top (40-37), but the Turkish defense, well prepared by former Olympiakos coach Dusan Ivkovic, strangled the Greek attack on a bad night for Olympiakos captain Vassilis Spanoulis: The Reds’ guard notched up just two points, with 0/6 field goals.

Othello Hunter was the top scorer for the Greek team with 12 points, while former Olympiakos player Stratos Perperoglou scored eight points for Efes.

The result leaves Olympiakos on a 4-1 record and on the second spot of the table.

However the Greek colors were better represented on Thursday by former Greece forward Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who scored 17 points on the night to lead holder Maccabi Tel Aviv to a 90-86 home win over Real Madrid.

Xanthi upsets 10-man Panathinaikos in Cup

Xanthi upsets 10-man Panathinaikos in Cup

Notably, the lineup of the last eight includes four teams from the second division.

Panathinaikos had snatched a 1-1 draw at Xanthi in the first leg, but was outplayed in Athens throughout the second leg.

Xanthi dumped holder Panathinaikos out of the Greek Cup on Thursday, to leave Olympiakos as the big favorite for the tournament that will enter its quarterfinal phase with the draw on Friday. Notably, the lineup of the last eight includes four teams from the second division.

Panathinaikos had snatched a 1-1 draw at Xanthi in the first leg, but was outplayed in Athens throughout the second leg. When David Mendes left the Greens with 10 men at the hour mark Xanthi upped its pressure and eventually scored the game’s only goal through Thodoris Vasilakakis two minutes from the end, to win 1-0.

Olympiakos had no problems with lowly Tyrnavos, winning 8-0 in Piraeus on Wednesday to advance on an 11-0 aggregate score. Jimmy Durmaz scored a hat-trick, Luka Milivojevic added a brace and Dimitris Diamantakos, Andreas Bouchalakis and David Fuster scored one each, on Argentine Franco Jara’s debut for the Reds.

Panionios grabbed a 1-1 draw at Veria to advance on a 3-2 aggregate score, and cash-strapped OFI completed a 5-0 aggregate victory over Panthrakikos with a 1-0 win in Iraklio on Tuesday.

Friday’s draw will also feature AEK and three other second division teams that managed to overcome top-flight opposition over two legs: AEK beat Kerkyra 2-0 on Thursday after drawing 1-1 on Corfu, Hania cancelled out PAS Giannina’s 2-1 win on Crete by winning with the same score away from home and then triumphing in the shootout, Iraklis Thessalonikis upset Asteras Tripolis with a 1-0 win in the Peloponnese, and Apollon Smyrnis trounced host Levadiakos 4-1 at Livadia.

It will be very interesting indeed if Olympiakos draws AEK in the Cup, to relive past contests between two of the country’s giants.

Angry Gulf nations leading charge to kick Australia out of Asian Football Confederation

On the eve of the Socceroos battling it out in the Asian Cup final, Football Federation Australia is about to face an even bigger battle after a movement mobilised among some Gulf nations to have Australia expelled from the Asian Football Confederation.

Speaking to a newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, AFC president Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa revealed he was aware that momentum for Australia’s removal from the confederation continued to strengthen among Gulf nations after rumours began swirling in recent months, and that “Arabs are not the only ones” seeking Australia’s removal.

The problem of Australia’s membership stems from several factors, all of which have been simmering since Australia joined the confederation in 2006. The belief among the agitators is that the relationship sees Australia benefiting hugely from Asian involvement without giving much in return.

Should Australia win the Asian Cup final against South Korea at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, it will mean they are the region’s reigning champions of club and international football, as well as being past female Asian champions. Australia has also proven a dominant force at World Cup qualification time, twice qualifying for the global showpiece event – and is thus seen to be “taking away” a spot from the rest of the confederation. Aspirational Middle East nations, already behind the likes of Japan and South Korea in their football development, and also concerned by the rise of China and eventually India, see their international exposure being affected by Australia’s involvement.

“Australia joined the AFC before I was elected as the president. At that time, the AFC general assembly made no resolution about re-assessing Australia’s membership to determine whether it will stay or be evicted,” Salman told the Dubai-based newspaper Al-Ittihad. “There are indications that prove that such desire exists among the confederations of west Asia to evict Australia. But I also know that the Arabs are not the only ones who are not convinced that Australia’s membership in Asia’s football is feasible.”

Salman added that while he was content with Australia’s involvement, the Gulf nations agitating for Australia’s removal could raise the issue at this year’s general assembly. But speaking to Fairfax Media, FFA chief executive David Gallop was taken aback by the revelations. “We were extremely surprised to hear of these press reports from west Asia. We are newcomers to AFC but our commitment to participate in competitions, membership of important AFC committees and general sharing of ideas and programs increases every year,” he said. “We celebrate the diversity of the Asian region and this tournament has shown our contribution can go beyond football to create and foster social and political bridges between key trading partners in the region.”

Gallop said Australia also contributed to the AFC economically and said membership of Asia would pave the way for broader links in the future. “Importantly, Australia is also in the top five markets for television rights in the entire confederation,” he said. “It has been educational for Australians and Australia’s multiculturalism has been on show. We have educated over 50,000 children about Asia through our Asian Cup primary school course.”

The FFA hosted a lunch on Thursday to celebrate the ties between Australia and Asia and to highlight  future networking opportunities. The  key speaker, federal Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb, said football had created connections which hadn’t existed until now.

“The more things we’ve got in common – especially on top of what we’re already there for – creates relationships and builds familiarity, trust and an appreciation for cultural attitudes,” he said. “We’re seen as part of the west by many of those countries and there’s barriers to break down but sport has a significant contribution to make.”

Asian Cup local organising committee chief executive Michael Brown said Australia had to do more to embrace its neighbours. “Asian communities about are face-to-face relationships and building trust. We’ve gone a long way with the Asian Cup but it’s a long journey,” he said. “This [tournament] is a small step.”

Asian Cup 2015: Ivan Franjic will get every chance to play final

SOCCEROOS defender Ivan Franjic has been cleared of a serious injury and is still a chance of playing in tomorrow’s Asian Cup final against South Korea at ANZ Stadium.

The right-back has been under an injury cloud since a hip problem late in the 2-0 win over the United Arab Emirates in Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Franjic was left in much pain and struggled to finish the match. He was forced to play out the last few minutes on the wing.

Coach Ange Postecoglou confirmed that the right-back had undergone scans yesterday that cleared him of a major problem, though the former Brisbane Roar defender is still in some doubt.

“He’s definitely still a chance. He had some scans but nothing really came up,” Postecoglou said yesterday. “Of course, he’s sore but post-game he was less of a chance than he is now.

“It’s nothing serious. If it was a normal break (between games) he’d be fine. But, with the quick turnaround that’s an issue.

“But, balanced against that, it’s such a big game and I’m sure he’ll give himself every chance of playing.”

Postecoglou said he was unsure what the injury was and was non-committal when asked if he would set a certain amount of time for Franjic, who has played every minute of Australia’s five games in the tournament, to prove his fitness.

“I’m not an expert, I just ask the doc if he’ll be available or not,” he said. “He’s tweaked his hip or groin or something in that area overstretching. It’s nothing serious. There’s time pressure, but sitting here now he’s a good chance to play.”

Postecoglou said he had not considered a Plan B if Franjic were forced out. There are suggestions Mark Milligan could shift from midfield. It is a position he played many times in his early days but hasn’t done so in the past six or seven years.

The other option is to shift the in-form Trent Sainsbury from central defence, but that is highly unlikely given he has had an exceptional tournament playing alongside Matthew Spiranovic in the heart of the defence.

“Today’s a recovery day, tomorrow we’ll have a session, so we’ll see how everyone pulls up,” Postecoglou added. “But I wouldn’t envisage too many changes.

“I never go with Plan Bs. Something else will turn up tomorrow and we’ll need Plan C. We’ve got options in the squad, but in fairness to Ivan we’ll give him the chance to be fit.

“If not, then we’ll look at them. It’s a bit different in tournament mode. It’s probably the biggest game in his life. You want to give people the chance to put their hands up. If you start preparing Plan Bs then it kind of makes it extra difficult for him.

“I’m sure he’s got that in the back of his mind. At this stage I’m not too fussed.”

Postecoglou seemed to suggest he would be prepared to play Franjic even if he wasn’t 100 per cent fit.

Neymar nets 2, Barca beats Atletico 3-2 to reach Copa semis

imagesU6QM0GNY

Neymar scored twice to lead Barcelona past nine-man Atletico Madrid and into the Copa del Rey semifinals with a 3-2 victory in a game that went from pulsating to unseemly at Vicente Calderon Stadium on Wednesday.

Barcelona advanced 4-2 on aggregate to set up a meeting with Villarreal or Getafe after an incident-filled match that saw three beautiful goals, questionable refereeing decisions, an own goal and a sending off at halftime. Not to mention Atletico’s Arda Turan losing his temper and tossing his shoe at a linesman.

Barcelona entered with a 1-0 cushion from the opening leg, but Atletico’s Fernando Torres needed just 39 seconds to score and set off an electric first half.

Lionel Messi started the first of two counterattacks for Neymar to strike right back in the ninth minute.

The match swayed again when Atletico’s Raul Garcia converted a penalty on the half-hour mark, but Miranda’s own goal put Barcelona back in control before Neymar pounced again on another Messi-led break before halftime.

Atletico’s self-destruction continued when Gabi Fernandez earned a second yellow at halftime for arguing with the referee following a scuffle between the teams. Turan was fortunate three minutes after the restart to only receive a yellow for throwing his shoe at the linesman. Mario Suarez then was ejected in the 84th for his second booking.

All that produced a rare sight in the second half: a Diego Simeone-coached Atletico without any fight left in them, down three goals and eventually two men.

“I am proud of my players, they were extraordinary in the first half,” Simeone said. “In the second half the team played as I asked them to, trying to not let them score and without any aspirations to score either. I thought it was the most opportune decision for my team.”

After failing to beat Atletico in six meeting last year, when the Madrid team won the Spanish league and reached the Champions League final, first-year coach Luis Enrique has led Barcelona to three wins over Simeone’s side.

It was Barcelona’s seventh consecutive win since a loss at Real Sociedad had put Luis Enrique under intense pressure to turn things around.

“The season is long with many ups and downs, we are in a good moment, with a lot of confidence and playing well,” the coach said.

Torres stunned Barcelona with his early goal when he skillfully controlled a long ball, used one touch to open an angle around Javier Mascherano before firing a long strike in off the post.

But Barcelona responded with a blistering counterattack when Messi dribbled by Mario Suarez and passed for Luis Suarez, who in turn played Neymar free to beat goalkeeper Jan Oblak with an angled shot.

Juanfran Torres drew a foul by Mascherano that the referee judged inside the area but televised replays showed to be outside, allowing Garcia to score from the spot.

But the home crowd fell silent when Miranda directed Sergio Busquet’s off-target header into his own net in the 38th.

Atletico clamored for another penalty when Antoine Griezmann volleyed Siqueira’s cross into Alba’s arm. The referee was unmoved and seconds later Messi was crossing for Alba to knock the ball down for Neymar to coolly put past Oblak.

After the glut of goals in the first half, the game suddenly descended into a series of ugly incidents.

Messi was booked for booting a ball into the stands. Then Torres and Neymar exchanged heated words as the teams left the pitch at halftime, an argument that sparked a shoving bout between several members of both benches.

Gabi sunk the hosts’ chances with his sending off, and Turan almost followed his captain when his temper boiled over after a tackle left him without a shoe. With no foul call forthcoming, the Turkey midfielder angrily tossed his shoe over the head of the linesman.

Villarreal visits Getafe with a 1-0 lead on Thursday, while Espanyol visits Sevilla up 3-1. Athletic Bilbao also hosts Malaga after their scoreless draw.

Nathan Tinkler wants $5m for Jets bail out

images3UDZ7K2H

OWNER and chairman Nathan Tinkler believes Football Federation Australia still owes him $5million for bailing the Newcastle Jets out more than four years ago.

After sacking five Jets players and three members of the coaching staff on Wednesday, Tinkler told the World Game website on Thursday that he would meet the FFA’s January 31 deadline to settle the club’s debts – which he estimated were about $500,000 – but only on his terms.

The former billionaire maintains he paid a $5 million fee when he acquired the Jets’ A-League licence and replaced Con Constantine as owner in September 2010.

The Newcastle Herald reported in May 2012 that Tinkler had paid FFA a $3.5 million acquisition fee, not $5 million, when he took the controls from Constantine.

‘‘Is there also a deadline for me getting my $5 million back from the FFA. Is that a deadline too?’’ Tinkler told the World Game.

‘‘That would be good. That would really help. FFA is at me for about $500,000, and I am at them for $5 million.

‘‘If they want to set a deadline to resolve those two issues, then I will be more than happy to resolve it by Saturday.’’

Australia and South Korea set to serve up classic final

1385938-29715144-1600-900
The first Asian Cup held in Australia has already exceeded expectations and now the stars have aligned to produce what promises to be a classic final.

Both sides will feel confident of emerging victorious in Saturday’s clash between the host nation and South Korea at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium when the best attack in the tournament comes up against the best defence.

The delicious contrast in styles is the perfect ending to a tournament that has been full of unexpected twists and turns from the world’s most populated and diverse region.

For the Australians, the final represents a chance to finally win a major international soccer title, an anomaly for a sports-mad country that has succeeded in almost every other sport in the world.

“It is a massive game. We made the final four years ago which was great for our nation,” the Australian coach Ange Postecoglou said.

“We have been in Asia for a while now and we haven’t won anything in the men’s game, but this gives us an opportunity at a national level to achieve something.”

Victory for South Korea would give the Taegeuk Warriors their first Asian Cup title since 1960 and the country something to celebrate after a grim year on and off the sporting field.

“The players are desperate to win this tournament,” defender Park Joo-ho said. “A lot of people at home really want us to win this tournament after 55 years.”

Despite reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2002, South Korea have struggled to reproduce that sort of form since.

They were eliminated in the group stage at two of the last three World Cups and before this year, had not made an Asian Cup final since 1988.

BEST IN ASIA

However, with the recently recruited Uli Stielike now in charge of an ambitious team, things are starting to look up.

The former German international is looking at a longer-term goal of restoring South Korea as Asia’s best team and has started by plugging up holes in the defence.

In their five matches at the Asian Cup, South Korea have yet to concede a goal, with first-choice keeper Kim Jin-hyeon keeping four clean sheets.

They won each of their three group games, against Oman, Kuwait and Australia by a solitary goal but found their range in the knockout matches, beating Iraq 2-0 in the semi-finals after star forward Son Heung-min netted twice in the 2-0 quarter-final win over Uzbekistan.

Stielike, in an attempt to reduce the pressure on his young squad, said Australia were favourites, playing down the significance of their pool match win because both teams had already qualified and the Socceroos rested several key players.

“We will have to work to be the same Korea. This is our target,” he said.

“For the rest, we have to take whatever is coming and try our best. We are realistic enough to understand that in the first game we didn’t play the best Australia team.”

Australia’s goals are more immediate. For all the progress they have made since ditching Oceania and joining Asia in 2006, the trophy cabinet remains bare.

They’re also trying to win over an Australian public that mostly prefers other football codes, so have adopted an all-out attacking style.

With Tim Cahill leading from up front, the Socceroos have piled on 12 goals in the tournament, four each in the group matches against Kuwait and Oman then two more in the quarter-final against China and semi-final with United Arab Emirates.

“It’s going to be special moment for all of us,” Cahill said. “But the mindset is to win, and to win the right way and by playing football and what we believe in. It’s going to be a big night.”

Live από το sports.in.gr
