VIDEO has emerged of the moment a huge shark, believed to be a great white, attacks a group of sea lions in the US, horrifying onlookers and turning the water a menacing red.
The video, posted by YouTube user Meredith Coppolo Shindler, shows a growing red pool of blood in San Francisco Bay off Alcatraz Island, while a crowd of tourists stands on a nearby pier looking on in shock.
The shark can be seen splashing around in the water before parts of the slaughtered animal bob up near the tourists.
“That’s a great white!’ a young boy can be heard saying.
“That’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life!”
David McGuire, from San Francisco-based shark conservation group Shark Stewards, said in a statement: “It definitely looks like a white shark, about 8-10 feet from the phone video sent to us.
“This is the first recorded predation event I know in the San Francisco Bay.
“For me its pretty exciting and a sign that the health is returning to the San Francisco Bay ecosystem.”
While harmless shark species are common in San Francisco Bay, it’s unusual to spot a large, oceanic species such as the great white.
