Cech fluffs lines as West Ham stun Arsenal, Coutinho stunner helps Liverpool edge Stoke

Petr Cech made a Premier League debut to forget for Arsenal as his errors helped West Ham United to record a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Cech’s arrival from Chelsea has been acclaimed as a signing that could turn Arsenal into title contenders, but he was found wanting as Arsene Wenger‘s side opened their Premier League campaign with a home defeat for the second time in three years.

Cech’s rash charge allowed Cheikhou Kouyate to head West Ham in front from debutant Dimitri Payet’s 43rd-minute free-kick and the Czech international’s slowness to get down saw him beaten at his near post from 25 yards by Mauro Zarate shortly before the hour.

“We were not convincing offensively or defensively,” said Wenger, whose side beat champions Chelsea 1-0 in the Community Shield last weekend.

“The players were maybe too nervous and put too much pressure on themselves. Today we have been hurt mentally and it is a good opportunity to respond.”

West Ham’s win echoed Aston Villa’s 3-1 success at the Emirates on the first day of the 2013-14 campaign and enabled Slaven Bilic to crown his first league game as manager with a famous victory.

“We are all very pleased and it is a great start for us — not only for the three points, but points against a team that are title contenders,” said the Croatian, who is a former West Ham defender.

“If you add to that a London derby, it makes it an even bigger win. This is very special. I am very proud of the second-half performance.”

Bilic named 16-year-old Reece Oxford in midfield and saw the teenager turn in a commanding display as West Ham bounced back from their Europa League elimination at the hands of Romanians Astra Giurgiu last Thursday.

Wenger sent on Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez as Arsenal sought to claw back their two-goal deficit, but the closest they came to scoring was a deflected first-half shot by Aaron Ramsey that hit the bar.

– Coutinho stunner –

Philippe Coutinho scored a stunning 30-yard winner in the 86th minute as Liverpool partially atoned for their 6-1 drubbing at Stoke City on the final day of last season with a 1-0 win at the Britannia Stadium.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers gave starts to new signings Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez, James Milner and £32.5 million ($50.4 million, 45.9 million euros) striker Christian Benteke, while Roberto Firmino came off the bench in the second half.

But the game was drifting to a goalless draw until Brazilian playmaker Coutinho picked the ball up in the inside-left channel, turned, and arrowed a glorious, bending strike into the top-right corner.

Meanwhile, Dutch midfielder Giorginio Wijnaldum scored on his competitive Newcastle United debut as former England head coach Steve McClaren began his St James’ Park tenure with a 2-2 draw at home to Southampton.

After Graziano Pelle had put the visitors in front, goals from Papiss Cisse and £14.5 million new recruit Wijnaldum put Newcastle in front, but Southampton substitute Shane Long headed in a 79th-minute equaliser.

Chelsea opened their title defence with a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea City on Saturday, with Manchester United edging Tottenham Hotspur 1-0.

Manchester City, runners-up last season, travel to West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

Hamilton Olympic steam roll Charlestown City 5-1

images

Olympic attack: 17 goals in 3 games…..!!!

Hamilton Olympic continued their blitz in front of goal, scoring another 5 in round 17 of the NPL, giving no chance to Charlestown City from salvaging any points at Lisle Carr Oval.

On a warm and sunny afternoon, Olympic opened proceedings with their captain Mason Campbell after a scramble in front of the Charlestown goal.
Charlestown are playing open offensive football and every time Olympic break they look very menacing.

Just before the 40 minute mark, Simon Mooney makes a darting run on the right and despite narrowing his angle the closer he got to goal, he had no problem tucking it into the net, 2-0!

Just before half time, Charlestown had a golden opportunity to score, when they fired a shot from close range, and with Danny Ireland beaten, Reece Cooper clears off the line!

From the kick off in the 2nd half, Olympic have two narrow misses from the head of Kane Goodchild and the boot of Cody Lucas.

Ten minutes later, Kane Goodchild spreads the ball wide to Simon Mooney who sends in a perfectly weighted cross to Ben Koina, who in turn, brings it down and places it wide of the Charlestown keeper and into an empty net! With 3-0 up, Charlestown coming forward, Olympic looking very hungry during counter attacks and Kane Goodchild supreme in the air, you just had the feeling more goals would follow.

This is exactly what happened 10 minutes later when a well taken free kick by Simon Mooney from the right into a packed Charlestown box, found the head of Kane Goodchild who in turn had no problem making it 4-0!

Charlestown continue to go forward and Olympic continue to look very dangerous with every counter- attack. On one occasion when the home side made it inside the Olympic penalty area, a scramble ensured and the score was reduced to 4-1!

Seconds before the referee blew the final whistle Simon Mooney passed to Ben Koina who in turn crossed to Reece Cooper who was sprinting into the penalty box from the left and who connected with the ball to make the final score 5-1 for Olympic.

A vintaged Olympic display and an Olympic attack which has bagged 17 goals in three games!

Rodgers: Liverpool can atone for rout at Stoke

untitled

Brendan Rodgers believes his Liverpool side can bounce back from their “incredible” 6-1 defeat at Stoke City, on the final day of last season, when they start the new campaign visit the Britannia Stadium this Sunday.

Liverpool were beaten by Stoke City in May as a campaign that promised much for the 2013-14 runners-up ended in a heavy defeat.

Much has changed at Anfield since then, with Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling leaving and Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino and James Milner among the arrivals. Rodgers has also overhauled his backroom staff over the close-season, and the Northern Irishman believes his new-look team are ready for their second successive Barclays Premier League match at the Britannia Stadium.

“We’ll certainly be better than we were last year that’s for sure,” Rodgers said on Friday. “It was a one-off game in terms of the whole experience, it was incredible in every aspect. It’s something that was very surprising and very disappointing.

“We’ll look to return to the level we’ve had over a couple of season in organisation and fight. It will certainly be tougher [for Stoke] than it was last year. When the fixtures came out I felt we couldn’t have had a better fixture, for me it was the perfect away fixture.”

Mark Hughes, meanwhile, believes his Stoke side can give Liverpool just as much of a test as they did in May.

“Liverpool have made a number of signings and strengthened up,” the Stoke manager said. “They will come here feeling they are better equipped to deal with us.

“We feel we can be even stronger than we were last time. All being well we will give Liverpool the same problems they had in May.”

Stoke too have added attacking options to their ranks with the signings of Joselu and Ibrahim Affelay, while Glen Johnson could line up against his former club. Hughes will be without Ryan Shawcross, though, with the captain and centre-back set for surgery on his back.

Marc Wilson may have been in line to partner Philipp Wollscheid in Shawcross’ absence but he has been struck down with an ankle injury, so Marc Muniesa looks set to celebrate his new four-year contract – signed on Friday – with a start.

EPL:Manchester Utd sinks Spurs 1-0 in season opener

cq5dam_web_235_137

An own goal from Kyle Walker ensured Manchester United opened the Barclays Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Spurs right-back stabbed into the back of his own net midway through the first half after a new-look United side had made a shaky start. David De Gea watched on as Sergio Romero made his debut in the United goal, with Louis van Gaal stating that the Spain goalkeeper is not in the right frame of mind.

Romero, the new signing, produced an assured display, making a couple of late saves as Spurs were unable to build on an encouraging start in which Christian Eriksen came close to opening the scoring.

Van Gaal may have seen room for improvement as he aims to turn United into title contenders this season, but will be more than happy with three points after losing at home to Swansea City on the opening day last year.

Romero, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay made their Barclays Premier League debuts for United, while Bastian Schweinsteiger was among the substitutes. Michel Vorm started in goal for Spurs, with Hugo Lloris on the bench, and Ben Davies got the nod at left-back in the absence of Danny Rose (thigh). Toby Alderweireld was the only new recruit in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Romero could have been picking the ball out of the back of the net just four minutes into his United bow, when Harry Kane and Eriksen linked brilliantly to open up the home side’s defence. Kane picked out Eriksen’s run into the penalty area with a clever chip and the Denmark midfielder headed in front of him before lifting a deft lob over Romero, but on to the roof of the net.

Romero was forced to race out once again soon after to save an effort from Walker when the right-back surged forward as Spurs made an impressive start.

Walker had the ball in the back of the net 22 minutes in, but it was at the wrong end to gift United the lead out of the blue.

Nabil Bentaleb’s loose pass was intercepted for United to break. Ashley Young passed to an unmarked Wayne Rooney in the area, and as the United captain prepared to shoot, Walker nipped in but could only poke the ball beyond Vorm.

Schweinsteiger was given a tremendous ovation when he replaced Michael Carrick on the hour following an uneventful start to the second half.

Young, who this week signed a new contract, came close to doubling United’s lead when the ball arrived at the winger’s feet at the back post but Vorm got down to smother his shot.

The agile Romero twice kept out shots from Eriksen in the closing stages and also palmed away a Kane header as Spurs applied late pressure, but were unable to salvage a point.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “It’s always difficult because first time play at Old Trafford and people are very supporting. I said in advance for example to Memphis he doesn’t have to play with too much eagerness or passion.

“I said that also counts for whole team. It’s always the first time you play at Old Trafford is always difficult.

“I like the performance, especially Darmian, he played a good match with and without the ball. Romero kept the zero, he did it wonderful with saving the ball.

“He is only one week with us, this is a process, you have to wait for it.”

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino: “I’m frustrated and disappointed, but very happy with the performance. I think the first 20 minutes we dominated the game, we created chances and you can see that after our mistake we conceded the goal.

“In the second half we played the same way and dominated the game Manchester United, at Old Trafford, only shot once on target. This is good for us, we created more chances and I think we deserved more than to lose 1-0.

“I’m not surprised because we always try to dominate games, this is our style, our philosophy.”

Australia’s milk bar, world first

milk01

With numerous supermarkets springing up in every Australian suburb and town, milk bars are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

But before shopfront windows became abandoned or transformed into the next bustling local cafe, how did the milk bar concept develop? When and by whom?

These are the questions being researched by historian Leonard Janiszewski and documentary photographer Effy Alexakis, who will be presenting a lecture on the international cross-cultural origins of the milk bar.

Their research has concluded that the humble milk bar was not only an Australian-first, but a first world-wide.

History was made in Sydney in 1932, when a man of Greek origin by the name of Joachim Tavlaridis, also known as Mick Adams, opened The Black & White 4d Milk Bar.

Stylistically influenced by American culture, once people caught wind of the successful concept, in a short five years close to 4,000 milk bars were operating throughout the country, most of which were Greek-run.

It wasn’t long before the idea was picked up abroad; Greeks opened the first milk bar in New Zealand in the mid-1930s, while Great Britain, South Africa and the South Pacific islands also attempted to introduce the idea into continental Europe and America.

Considered now to be an Australian and international food-catering icon, this lecture will provide an insight into the milk bar and its development within Australia, its subsequent distribution overseas, and its role as a vehicle for Americanisation.

Organised by the Royal Australian Historical Society, the lecture will be presented by Mr Janiszewski and Ms Alexakis, who have been researching the historical and contemporary Greek Australian presence both within Australia and overseas since 1982.

This content is a part of their ongoing project and archive In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians, which has been recognised as one of the largest collections of Greek Australian material in the country.

The lecture is a free event and will be presented on Wednesday 5 August at 1.00-2.00 pm at History House, 133 Macquarie Street, Sydney. For more information call the Royal Australian History Society on (02) 9247 8001, email history@rahs.org.au or visit www.rahs.org.au

Refugees cheer, pray, embrace strangers as they reach Greece

syrianrefugees_lesvos_web-thumb-large

The man in a red and white checked shirt gingerly waded through the water holding an infant.

Seconds after shrugging off a life jacket, Syrian refugee Mustafa Mohammad embraced the first person he met in Greece.

A two-hour sea journey from the western shores of Turkey, this bamboo-fringed coastline on the northern Greek island of Lesvos has become the main gateway into the European Union for refugees fleeing conflict in Syria and the wider Middle East.

Others on the inflatable white dinghy whooped and cheered as they hit land. Two men alighted and knelt on the pebble beach, their foreheads touching the stones in prayer. A woman wearing a hijab picked up a pebble and hurled it into the sea.

Within one hour on Thursday, Reuters journalists on the island saw two boatloads of refugees landing on the Greek territory, one carrying roughly 40 Syrians, the other the same number of Afghans.

They are among the tens of thousands who have entered Greece illegally since the beginning of the year, representing what the European Union has described as one of the biggest humanitarian crises since World War Two.

“I don’t care where I go, I’m just so glad to be out of Syria. We all deserve to live,” said a 26-year-old man, travelling with his younger sister. A barber by profession, he would only give his first name, Issa.

“My parents are still in Homs,” he said, a war-ravaged Syrian city which has seen some of the fiercest fighting in the in that country’s conflict.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, estimates that Greece has received more than 107,000 refugees and migrants this year, more than double its 43,500 intake of 2014.

From several accounts of people now in reception centres on the island waiting for papers to move to other European countries, dinghies are the primary means of transport across a sea strait about 20 km between Turkey and Lesbos.

Hundreds daily

Testament to that is the dirt track between the northern Lesvos communities of Mithimna and Skala Sykaminias. It is strewn with debris from inflatable dinghies and life jackets left in piles along the shore.

The dinghies are slashed when refugees reach land. In both of Thursday’s cases, and within minutes, men in double cabin pick-ups arrived on the remote track to retrieve what could be salvaged; the expensive motors, and a wooden and fibreglass base used at the bottom of each dinghy.

Observers say the flow of refugees reaches on average 250 daily. Some make their way to volunteers who make arrangements for them to be fed, and buses to reach the main city of the island, Mitilini, where they are taken to reception centres for identification.

Others walk. Not knowing where they are going, the boatpeople take to the dusty road to reach the nearest community about 10 km away.

Mustafa Mohammad is still elated, but looks confused. “Where do I go now?” he asked, before following the rest of the refugees kicking up dust as they walked up a mountain.

PAOK and Atromitos advance in Europa League

paok_constantinidis_web-thumb-large

Atromitos and PAOK will on Friday afternoon join Panathinaikos in the draw for the Europa League play-offs, as they saw off their third-qualifying-round opponents on Thursday with relative ease.

In a game dominated by a 50-minute stoppage due to a power failure early in the second half, Atromitos beat AIK Solna 1-0 in Athens to advance on a 4-1 aggregate score.

Brazilian star Marcelinho, the hero of the first-leg victory of Atromitos in Sweden with a 3-1 score, capitalized on a defensive error by AIK and after a great solo effort he slid the ball home on the 67th minute for 1-0.

PAOK snatched a 1-1 draw at Spartak Trnava in Slovakia and reached the play-offs courtesy of its 1-0 win at home last week.

The Thessaloniki team missed some good chances to open the score, and the hosts punished the Greeks with a penalty converted on the 35th minute by Erik Sabo.

The Greeks responded in the third minute of the second half as some great footwork and a pinpoint cross by Nikos Korovesis from the left found Dimitris Constantinidis at the edge of the six-yard box and he equalized from close range.

PAOK played the last 24 minutes of the game with 10 men due to a straight red card shown to Yiannis Skondras.
