Australia:Humpback whale rescued from shark nets

CKKZolxWwAASteq
A JUVENILE humpback whale that became caught in a shark net in waters off the Gold Coast has been partially freed from the tangle.

Whale-watching tour boats spotted the distressed juvenile on Saturday morning and alerted rescuers at Sea World.

Channel Seven reported rescuers had removed about 80 per cent of the netting from the whale’s body before it swam away.

“It would thrash the lower half of its body to one side as if it was trying to free itself,” Sea World’s Mitchell LeRoy told the network.

“We are notifying the fisheries departments up and down the coast — they’ll keep an eye out and we will get reports as the animal moves forwards.”
Sea World staff were forced to euthanise a humpback whale calf after it repeatedly stranded itself on the Gold Coast last week.

Humpback whale pods migrate from the feeding grounds of Antarctica, around New Zealand and then up Australia’s east coast during winter months.

Passengers on whale watching boats reported seeing the whale trapped in netting.

Jonathan Northall tweeted a photo and video of the whale taken aboard a Sea World whale cruise on which he was a passenger this morning.

10-year-old girl gives birth in Brazil

untitled

Washington: In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old Brazilian girl has given birth after complaining of having a stomach ache at school.

The girl was taken to the hospital by her teachers where doctors discovered she was in the later stages of labour.

The schoolgirl from southeast Brazil was found to be seven months pregnant.

Despite the girl’s age, the baby was delivered safely last week, ‘Metro.Co.Uk’ reported.

It is believed that the girl became pregnant after her 40-year-old stepfather, who has been accused of rape of a child and illegal possession of firearms, allegedly abused her.

The girl’s mother said she was unaware the child was pregnant and had not noticed her daughter’s stomach was larger than normal.

The girl told police that her stepfather had threatened to kill her mother and brother if she ever revealed the abuse, the report said.

Protesters clash across Australia

6631450-3x2-700x467

Hundreds of anti-Islam and anti-racism protesters have rallied against each other in aggressive demonstrations across Australia.

Five people were arrested in Sydney on Sunday, a day after violent clashes in Melbourne. Two people were injured when more than 150 Reclaim Australia protesters marched in Martin Place in Sydney, some wearing ancient Greek army costumes and others with Australian flags draped over their shoulders.

George Jameson, rallying with Reclaim Australia in a replica Spartan military outfit, said they weren’t racists and had come together to stand for freedom of speech.’Both my parents are immigrants,’ he told AAP.

‘They both came from the former Yugoslav Republic, how can I be a racist? I’m a first-gen Aussie.’I’m (here) for freedom of speech and democracy.’Police separated the group from a a loud counter-protest gathering, whose members waved banners with the words ‘no Racism, no Islamophobia’.

Protester Linc Saunders said some in the Reclaim Australia camp had different intentions.’There are people amongst them (who) spout online pro neo-Nazi propaganda – I think that just shows who we are up against here.’

People were nearly trampled in Perth as police kicked out numerous protesters from the Rally Against Racism group. The group shouted ‘Muslims are welcome, racists are not’ through megaphones as they battled with the Reclaim Australia protesters to drown each other out with chants and speeches.

Two dozen police officers on foot and horse maintained a human barrier between the groups.

In Canberra, about 200 anti-racism protesters outnumbered about 50 people marching for Reclaim Australia, with the first group marching to federal parliament while chanting ‘racist scum off our streets’.

Despite the heated tensions, there were no reports of arrests at the Queensland rallies, which were held at Mackay, Brisbane, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Federal government MP George Christensen delivered on his promise to attend the Mackay Reclaim Australia rally, dismissing criticism from Labor. The member for Dawson said the spread of repressive ideologies must not be confused with religion.’

I refer to the slow spread of sharia-style dispensation of justice, which is quietly executed in Australian mosques, unfortunately, on a daily basis,’ he said.’Yet we don’t dare speak of it because we will be instantly attacked as racists.’

Earlier, Labor leader Bill Shorten said the prime minister should not allow his MPs to stir up trouble by attending the rallies. The mood at Sunday’s rallies was at times aggressive but did not reach the level of violence witnessed at a similar rally in Melbourne on Saturday.

Police had resorted to capsicum spray and arrested at least four people in Melbourne as they battled to keep the two sides apart.

Police out in force as more Reclaim Australia, No Room for Racism protests held nationwide

6631450-3x2-700x467

Vocal protesters and police are out in force as more anti-racist and anti-Islamist rallies get underway nationwide, after violence erupted at protests rallies in Melbourne yesterday.

In Sydney’s Martin Place scuffles between Reclaim Australia protesters and anti-racism protesters have been reported despite a heavy police presence including specialist officers.

One man was arrested before the protests over the alleged assault of police, while a group of demonstrators were forcibly removed by police to an area further down in Martin Place which was agreed to by rally organisers.

Police said they had worked with rally organisers to ensure the protests were conducted safely but that officers would respond swiftly to violent or disruptive behaviour.

Reclaim Australia called supporters to gather for what organisers have described as “a public response to the shock of recent atrocities of Islam’s radicals both inside and outside of Australia”.

Hundreds were also expected to protest against bigotry, xenophobia and Islamophobia.

“We will not tolerate any criminal, anti-social or dangerous behaviour,” Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke said in a statement.

“If you choose to do the wrong thing you’ll be removed and dealt with appropriately.

“The same goes for anyone who attempts to cause disharmony or incite conflict with those who may hold opposing views.”

The Sydney rallies are among a number being held in cities across Australia today including Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart and Perth.

In Queensland, a Reclaim Australia rally in Mackay is to be addressed by federal Coalition MP George Christensen, while former federal MP Pauline Hanson made an appearance in Rockhampton.

6631456-3x2-700x467

Ms Hanson told the crowd she was “against the spread of Islam” and that Australia was changing and that she did not like it.

Violent clashes in Melbourne yesterday saw hundreds of police called in and officers used capsicum spray to subdue the crowds.

Bottles were thrown and protesters from both sides were punched and kicked as they clashed.

In Adelaide there were tense scenes as Reclaim Australia and anti-racism demonstrators converged at Parliament House..

Organisers of today’s Rally Against Racism in Perth say they want to challenge Reclaim Australia without resorting to violence.

“We’re not going there with any intention of being violent in any way, we are actually there to challenge the violence, the ideological violence of the people in Reclaim Australia,” organiser Miranda Wood said.

“Hate speech is not welcome and we will be there to challenge it.”

Bronwyn Bishop slugs taxpayers $1000 a day for private limo costs

1437259833414

Embattled federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop has revealed a federal department is examining two more charter flights she has admitted could have been used to attend party political events.

The development comes as Fairfax Media can reveal that Mrs Bishop charged taxpayers almost $1000 a day to travel in luxurious private limousines during her $90,000 fortnight in Europe.

The Speaker finally conceded on Saturday that she made an “error of judgment” when she chartered a $5227 helicopter to make the short journey from Melbourne to Geelong for a Liberal Party fundraiser last year.

Mrs Bishop refused to say sorry to the Australian taxpayer over the episode, saying her refund was apology enough. Despite admitting the only reason she travelled to Victoria on November 5 last year was for the party event at a golf club, she dismissed any suggestion she would resign her position as head of the federal Parliament.

“One doesn’t resign for an error of judgment that is within the guidelines,” she said.

Mrs Bishop revealed she had also asked the Department of Finance to look into two other charter flights she had taken since becoming Speaker – one to Young and one to Nowra – for the sake of “completeness”.

“There were certainly public meetings, there could have been a fundraiser as well,” she said.

But the charters are far from the only extravagance in Mrs Bishop’s expense reports.

Fairfax Media can reveal the Speaker racked up a $14,000 limo bill in a little over a fortnight during her European trip in October.

On the same trip, Mrs Bishop’s four fellow delegates spent between $1200 and $2800 each on ground transport. They typically travelled by public transport or in more modest embassy-arranged cars.

“There was a black BMW carting her around like royalty,” said a source involved with the trip. “She wasn’t about to take her eight-inch heels on the subway.”

The Speaker’s chief of staff and spokesman Damien Jones, who was on the trip with another staff member, confirmed the spending on Saturday.

“All presiding officers get their own transport,” he told Fairfax Media. “In fact I think any head of delegations gets their own transport. So yes, that accounts for the $14,000.”

Mrs Bishop and her staff also spent $42,000 on flights and $25,000 on meals and accommodation. The other parliamentarians – the Coalition’s Nola Marino and Cory Bernardi, and Labor’s Glenn Sterle and Tony Zappia – each spent a fraction of those amounts.

The trip was partly aimed at securing Mrs Bishop a plum new job. She was running for president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a democracy group based in Switzerland. She lost the vote to Bangladesh’s candidate.

Reminded the Treasurer had said the helicopter charter “failed the sniff test”, Mrs Bishop said: “Joe [Hockey] says some funny thing sometimes, doesn’t he? I think he said poor people don’t drive cars or something.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott was standing by his hand-picked Speaker on Saturday. In his first public comments on the expenses scandal, Mr Abbott said he would not ask her to step down.

“No. She’s repaid the money and she does a good job,” Mr Abbott told reporters in Queensland.

“Bronwyn admitted it was probably an error of judgement and she’s repaid the money. She has my confidence.”

Mrs Bishop repaid the $5227 cost of the charter – plus a $1300 penalty – amid intense political and public pressure on Thursday.

Mr Abbott dismissed a suggestion she should stand aside as the department conducts its audit. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to stand aside simply because the finance department might be having a look at something.”

He also dismissed suggestions that Mrs Bishop was being treated differently to former speaker Peter Slipper, who faced criminal charges over his expenses.

Labor has called on the Australian Federal Police to investigate the Bronwyn Bishop expenses scandal without further delay, saying the Department of Finance’s internal audit should not stand in the way of a criminal inquiry.

Opposition waste-watch spokesman Pat Conroy has has written to the AFP for a second time, urging it to probe the chopper episode. The AFP has referred the matter to the finance department under what is known as the Minchin protocol, which allows the department to conduct an audit to determine whether allegations are credible. If it decides there has been serious and deliberate wrongdoing it can refer the case back to the police.

But Labor believes the protocols do not apply if allegations are referred directly to the AFP.

“Refusing to investigate the allegations against Mrs Bishop would be inconsistent with the approach taken in the Slipper case,” Mr Conroy said. “In any event, the Minchin protocol is no impediment to a police investigation into Mrs Bishop’s conduct.”

Labor believes the case hinges on whether Mrs Bishop signed a Presiding Officer’s Charter Certification form. The form requires the Speaker to confirm that a charter is for her “office holder duties” and states that knowingly giving false or misleading information is a serious criminal offence.

Real Madrid v Roma: Serie A side open International Champions Cup with penalty shootout win at MCG

346560-3c3b6242-2d3e-11e5-a522-4b58038690a7
ROMA have won the opening game of the International Champions Cup with a 7-6 penalty shootout win over Real Madrid.

80,746 expectant fans filled the MCG for the first of three glamour friendlies this week, and although it was scoreless at the end of 90 minutes, there were glimpses of quality from each of the cavalcade of stars on show.

Gareth Bale was busy for Los Blancos, while former Arsenal striker Gervinho was dynamic alongside Iago Falque in the opening 45 minutes.

Roma talisman Francesco Totti was given the first 30 minutes, with Roma manager Rudi Garcia giving the club legend, Seydou Doumbia and Mattia Destro a third of the game.

All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, but he was overshadowed by crafty midfielder Luka Modric in the first period, with the Portuguese star showing a bit of pre-season rustiness when presented with a few first half half-chances.

There were a raft of changes made by both sides in the second half, which disrupted the flow of the game as more of the action took part in the middle third of the field.

Karim Benzema and Isco were some of the big names ushered off the bench, while new Real signing Danilo looked lively at right back, replacing another impressive performer Dani Carvajal.

The best second-half chance fell to Lucas Vazquez, although he was thwarted by Roma custodian Morgan De Sanctis.

The keeper then went on to be the match winner in the penalty shootout. After 12 perfect penalties, it was Vazquez thwarted again, with the Roma stopper parrying his spot-kick away.

Roma face Manchester City on Tuesday, while Los Blancos take on Manchester City in a sold-out contest on Friday night.

EARLIER, Manchester City warmed up for their ICC opener against Roma on Tuesday with a late 1-0 win over Melbourne City.

Samir Nasri scored the decisive goal with a wonderful finish, but Melbourne City’s Stefan Mauk made headlines for all the wrong reasons, with an awful miss that made headlines across the globe.
