Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident his side have the battling qualities to overturn a difficult start to the Barclays Premier League campaign.

The Reds go into this Sunday’s visit to Crystal Palace in 11th position after picking up 14 points from their opening 11 fixtures.

A scintillating 11-match winning streak at the tail end of last season helped Liverpool come close to winning their first BPL title, but a loss to Chelsea and Crystal Palace fighting back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 in their last visit to Selhurst Park, meant they finished two points adrift of champions Manchester City.

Rodgers believes his side can rediscover their form and end a run of two successive league defeats this weekend.

“Adverse moments always provide you with the opportunity to go and fight even harder, and that’s something we all aim to do here from the staff to the players – the club is very much together,” Rodgers said. “It hasn’t been a great start for us, but we know we’re only a short distance away from getting a few results that will push us back up.

“We’re also in the quarter-finals of a cup competition and it’s still in our hands in the Champions League, but we’ve just got to focus on moving on from a difficult period. We need to win games and of course, that always changes the outlook.”

Rodgers will now be without striker Daniel Sturridge until the New Year, after he re-injured his thigh during the international break.

New signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have bolstered the forward line but are still waiting for their first league goals for the Reds, and the Italian faces a late fitness test after picking up a hamstring injury while away with his country.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson has a similar problem but should be fit to feature this weekend as the visitors go in search of just their fifth top-flight win of the season.

A run of five matches without a win has left Palace above the relegation zone on goal difference, but Warnock wants his side to take heart from the narrow 1-0 defeat by Manchester United last time out.

“Our defence will have to put in another convincing display like they did at Manchester United, that is vital,” he said. “But we also need to create a bit more ourselves, it is all about finding that happy medium.”

Warnock ruled Kevin Doyle out with a groin injury but is hopeful that James McArthur will overcome a calf problem in time.

Τα νέα στοιχεία

Η Εθνική Υπηρεσία Ωκεανών και Ατμόσφαιρας των ΗΠΑ (NOAA) ανακοίνωσε την Πέμπτη ότι, σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα, ο περασμένος μήνας πήρε τα σκήπτρα του θερμότερου μήνα από τον Οκτώβριο του 2003, με 14,74 βαθμούς Κελσίου.

Σημειώνεται ότι στοιχεία υπάρχουν από το 1880. «Καθίσταται αρκετά σαφές ότι το 2014 θα καταλήξει ως η θερμότερη χρονιά που έχει καταγραφεί» δήλωσε ο Ντέκε Αρντ, επικεφαλής της υπηρεσίας παρακολούθησης του κλίματος της NOAA στη Βόρεια Καρολίνα. «Το ερώτημα που απομένει είναι: Κατά πόσο;» πρόσθεσε.

Μέχρι στιγμής, φέτος, η θερμοκρασία παγκοσμίως είναι κατά μέσο όρο 14,78 βαθμοί Κελσίου. Ακόμα και αν κατά τους δύο τελευταίους μήνες του έτους ο υδράργυρος κινηθεί στο μέσο όρο του 21ου αιώνα, το 2014 θα κλείσει ως η θερμότερη χρονιά. Η ζέστη προέρχεται κατά μεγάλο μέρος από την ασυνήθιστη θερμότητα στους ωκεανούς, όπου τους τελευταίους έξι μήνες καταγράφονται επίσης διαδοχικά ρεκόρ.

Επειδή οι ωκεανοί διακρίνονται για τη θερμοκρασιακή τους αδράνεια, το πιο πιθανό είναι ότι ο πλανήτης θα ζήσει ένα νέο ετήσιο ρεκόρ θερμοκρασίας. Όλα αυτά συμβαίνουν παρά το γεγονός ότι στις ΗΠΑ επικρατεί αυτήν την εποχή αρκετό κρύο. Συνολικά, όμως, οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες αντιπροσωπεύουν μόνο το 2% της επιφάνειας του πλανήτη. Messi has been strongly linked with an exit from Barcelona in the last few days, with his father and agent Jorge refusing to rule out a move.

And despite United being rumoured to be front-runners for the Argentine’s signature, Spanish newspaper Sport says Chelsea or City are the most likely destinations in England.

Indeed, they say only Chelsea, City, PSG or Inter Milan could put together the funds to lure Messi, with United not being considered in the race.

Both Chelsea and City have previously been linked with move for Messi, with both said to have seen bids knocked back in the past.

It’s getting hot. Parts of NSW are heading towards record high tempteratures, with some children’s sporting matches cancelled and Sydneysiders heading for a swim.

And despite the Bureau of Meteorology revising earlier predictions that Sydney would be hit with unusually high November temperatures, people swimming in the eastern suburbs beaches have been treated to another unusual sight – a strange sea fog that has been moving around the Coogee area for much of the day.

A Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster, Peter Zmijewski, said it was hard to know what was causing the fog, as it would usually occur further out to sea where it was not closely observed.

“Most of the time it is what we call a ‘steaming fog’, in other words some warm, moist air moving over cooler water,” he said. “It could also be caused by cold currents coming through”.

Mr Zmijewski said Sydney was being protected from the worst of the heat today by a cooling sea breeze, with Observatory Hill currently just under 26 degrees. It is predicted now to reach 29 in Sydney today.

But further out parts of Sydney are starting to bake, with Richmond hitting 44.8 degreesat 1:38pm – the highest temperature for that area since records began in 1939.

Bourke has reached the highest temperatures in NSW, hitting 45.8 degrees at 1:24pm – the second highest temperature on record for November.

Michael Krahe, a waiter at the Diggers on the Darling in Bourke said the town was feeling the heat.

“It’s pretty hot,” he said from his air-conditioned workplace. “We are just staying inside wherever possible. If you do go outside you do it early, or late at night.”

The record top temperature for November is 46.6 degrees. The last time 45.8 was reached was only this month, on Friday the 14th.

While there have been reports some children’s soccer matches have been cancelled, Eric Myatt, the executive officer for the NSW Discrict Cricket Association, said he had not heard of any children’s cricket matches being cancelled.

“We manage the games and just keep the drinks flowing,” he said. Umpires at each ground would call off matches if it got to hot, as well as using technicques such as sraying players on the field with water, he said.

Tips for staying healthy in the heat

1. Remember the very old, very young, as well as people with chronic health problems or obesity are most at risk.
2. Drink plenty of water. Remember, older people may be less likely to realise they are thirsty.
3. Keep cool-packs in the fridge
4. Pick and east or south-facing room to be your “cool room”.
5. Cover windows with light curtains with pale linings.

Η Διεθνής Αμνηστία κυκλοφόρησε ένα δωρεάν λογισμικό που επιτρέπει στους χρήστες να διαπιστώνουν εάν οι υπολογιστές τους παρακολουθούνται από κυβερνητικές μυστικές υπηρεσίες.

Το πρόγραμμα λέγεται Detekt και σχεδιάστηκε ειδικά για ακτιβιστές ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων και δημοσιογράφους.

“Οι κυβερνήσεις χρησιμοποιούν ολοένα και περισσότερο εξελιγμένη και επικίνδυνη τεχνολογία που τους επιτρέπει να διαβάζουν τα ιδιωτικά e-mail καθώς και να ενεργοποιούν την κάμερα και να τα καταγράφουν” αναφέρει ο Μάρεκ Μαρτσίνσκι, στέλεχος της Διεθνούς Αμνηστίας.

Το Detekt αναπτύχθηκε από τον Κλαούντιο Γκουαρνιέρι και λανσάρεται από τη Διεθνή Αμνηστία σε συνεργασία με την Digitale Gesellschaft, την Electronic Frontier Foundation και την Privacy International.

«Είναι ένας αληθινός στόχος, όχι ένα άπιαστο όνειρο» δήλωσε στον Guardian ο εκπρόσωπος της Shimizu, Χιντέο Ιμαμούρα. Και η αλήθεια είναι ότι η επιχείρηση δεν φείδεται φιλοδοξιών: οι προτάσεις της «που θα ωφελήσουν τις μελλοντικές γενιές» περιλαμβάνουν σχέδια για τις κατασκευές πλωτών πόλεων, ένα ξενοδοχείο στο διάστημα και έναν… δακτύλιο γύρω από το φεγγάρι.

Fitch Ratings retained Greece’s sovereign credit rating at ‘B’ and its outlook as stable late on Friday but warned of a downgrade should snap elections prove inconclusive or negotiations with the country’s creditors fail to result in an agreement.

Among the key conclusions in the Fitch report are that the country’s funding needs for the next six months are fully covered and that talks with the creditors could be extended into next year.

Fitch had upgraded Greece to ‘B’ from ‘B-’ in May, bringing the country’s rating five notches below investment grade. It now says that the 2014 budget will meet its targets thanks to an unprecedented fiscal adjustment and that fiscal figures. are also likely to outperform expectations. Following the stress tests banks need no further capital, Fitch said.

It points out that the economy is bottoming out but warns of the risk that the next government to emerge from possible snap polls in March could be less committed to economic and fiscal reforms.
