NSW Police and firefighters have provided residents with 11 tips to safeguard their homes against thieves and fires during the holidays.

NSW Police Force’s Corporate Sponsor for Crime Prevention, Superintendent Brad Shepherd, said criminals were often opportunists.

“They are well aware that many people leave their homes at this time of year – to visit relatives and go on holidays,” Superintendent Shepherd said.

“Don’t make it easy for them to target your place.

“When away from home, never advertise your travel plans on social media – a Facebook photo showing you on holiday is an open invitation to thieves.

“You might also consider using a timer to activate an internal light or radio to give the impression someone is home.”

Superintendent Shepherd said residents could also ask a trusted family member, friend or neighbour to keep an eye on the property, collect mail, mow the lawn and put out garbage bins.

He said this advice was in addition to everyday measures including fitting security doors, windows, locks and alarms; keeping trees and shrubs trimmed to improve visibility; and not leaving spare keys outside.

Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW)’s Superintendent Ian Krimmer said many people cooked large meals for their family and friends at this time of year and some became distracted while cooking.

“Kitchen fires account for more than half of all home fires, and we see an increase in the number of fires involving barbecues at this time of year,” Superintendent Ian Krimmer said.

“More often than not, the cause of those fires is due to cooking being left unattended, so the message is clear this festive season – keep looking when cooking.”

Superintendent Krimmer said fires could also happen in unoccupied houses and units. He said people going away should switch off and unplug electrical appliances and make sure their alarms are working.

Home safety and security tips:

Let a trusted neighbour or family friend know your whereabouts and contact details. Ask them to watch your home, empty your mailbox, mow your lawn and, most importantly, call Triple-Zero if they notice anything suspicious or if the smoke alarm activates.

Dispose of Christmas wrapping and delivery/goods packaging carefully. Don’t advertise your new valuables to would-be thieves.

Lock away your handyman/gardening tools, which may be used to force open doors or windows, and any item that may be used to gain access to the property or cause damage.

Record descriptions, models and serial numbers of your valuables and then put them somewhere safe.

If you live in a bushfire-prone area, prepare your home properly – a full preparation checklist can be found at http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au

Switch off and disconnect non-essential electrical appliances and IT equipment.

Ensure any electrical items you decide to leave on continuously, or on timer circuits, are in good working order – that includes lights left on to deter thieves both inside and outside.

Test your smoke alarms and change batteries, if required, to ensure they function.

Before you leave, close all internal doors to help contain any fire that might occur.

Then, check your doors, windows and garage are locked securely, and remove spare keys from hiding places. As you leave, check everything again.

If you have a home security alarm, activate it.

Στη σύλληψη δύο ακόμα ανδρών προχώρησε η αστυνομία της Αυστραλίας, στο πλαίσιο επιχείρησης για αποτροπή επίθεσης από τζιχαντιστές.

Στους 13 έχει ανέλθει ο αριθμός των συλληφθέντων σε μια επιχείρηση που συνεχίζεται στην Αυστραλία και έχει αποτρέψει μια ενδεχόμενη επίθεση από εγχώριους ισλαμιστές μαχητές πέρυσι, σε στόχους που περιελάμβαναν μια ναυτική βάση.

Σήμερα Τετάρτη (23/12) ανακοινώθηκε από την αναπληρώτρια Επίτροπο της Αστυνομίας της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας, Κάθριν Μπερνότι, ότι συνελήφθησαν στο Σίδνεϊ δύο άνδρες, ηλικίας 24 και 20 ετών.

Νωρίτερα τον Ιανουάριο, η αστυνομία απήγγειλε κατηγορίες σε βάρος πέντε προσώπων, ανάμεσά τους και ενός 15χρονου, για τη συνωμοσία αυτή που φέρεται να αφορούσε στον σχεδιασμό επίθεσης σε στόχους όπως το αρχηγείο της αυστραλιανής εθνικής Αστυνομίας στο Σίδνεϊ και μια ναυτική βάση στην ίδια πόλη.

«Δεν υπάρχει συγκεκριμένη απειλή, δεν υπάρχει τρέχουσα απειλή, δεν υπάρχει επικείμενη απειλή και αυτήν την εποχή του χρόνου καθώς οδεύουμε προς τα Χριστούγεννα και την Πρωτοχρονιά, παρακαλώ βεβαιωθείτε ότι οι δουλειές σας συνεχίζονται κανονικά», δήλωσε σήμερα η Μπερν.

Σε βάρος ενός από τους δύο συλληφθέντες θα απαγγελθεί κατηγορία για την σύνταξη ενός εγγράφου που είναι πιθανό να διευκολύνει μια τρομοκρατική επίθεση. Ο δεύτερος θα κατηγορηθεί για συνωμοσία σε προετοιμασία διάπραξης μιας τρομοκρατικής ενέργειας, δήλωσε η Μπερν.

Σήμερα αξιωματούχοι της αυστραλιανής Συνοριοφυλακής δήλωσαν πως συνέλαβαν και απέλασαν έναν Γάλλο υπήκοο ο οποίος είχε προσπαθήσει να εισέλθει στη Μελβούρνη μερικές μόλις ημέρες μετά τις επιθέσεις ισλαμιστών μαχητών στο Παρίσι τον περασμένο μήνα που προκάλεσαν τουλάχιστον 129 νεκρούς. Ο άνδρας μετέφερε εξτρεμιστικό υλικό σε φορητές συσκευές και τρία δοχεία δακρυγόνων.

Υπερψηφίστηκε από τη συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των κομμάτων και με 193 ψήφους, έναντι 56 κατά, σε σύνολο 249 παρόντων βουλευτών, το νομοσχέδιο του Υπουργείου Δικαιοσύνης για το σύμφωνο συμβίωσης.

Με την επισήμανση ότι μεγάλες αλλαγές προοδευτικού χαρακτήρα χρειάζονται για να προωθούνται και να υλοποιούνται «συστράτευση των δημοκρατικών δυνάμεων και των κοινωνικών κινημάτων», ο πρωθυπουργός Αλ. Τσίπρας προσέδωσε νέες πολιτικές διαστάσεις στην ούτως ή άλλως φορτισμένη κοινοβουλευτική διαδικασία για το Σύμφωνο Συμβίωσης.

Παπαχριστόπουλος) του κόμματος του κ. Π. Καμμένου διαφοροποιούμενοι δήλωσαν πως θα ψηφίσουν θετικά.

Την ίδια στιγμή, διαφοροποιήσεις και μάλιστα ηχηρές καταγράφονται και στην αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση: Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης, Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη, Ολγα Κεφαλογιάννη, Νίκη Κεραμέως δηλώνοντας ότι δεν συμεμρίζονται τις ενστάσεις και επιφυλάξεις που κεντρικά η ΝΔ έχει εκφράσει, αναφέρουν ότι υπερψηφίζουν το νομοσχέδιο. Απέναντί τους, πολλά άλλα στελέχη της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης τάσσονται κατά, ενώ δεν ήταν λίγοι και εκείνοι οι οποίοι για να καταδείξουν την ριζική διαφωνία τους, συνυπέγραψαν αίτημα διεξαγωγής ονομαστικής ψηφοφορίας! Για να ξεπεραστεί το διαφαινόμενο πρόβλημα, φαίνεται ότι θα επιλεγεί η «λύση» της «ψήφου κατά συνείδηση».

Νωρίτερα, αίτημα για ονομαστική ψηφοφορία είχαν, για διαφορετικούς λόγους, καταθέσει δύο άλλες πλευρές: οι βουλευτές του Ν. Μιχαλολιάκου επειδή, όπως λένε, θέλουν να καταγραφεί με ονοματεπώνυμο ποιοί ψηφίζουν «κατά του έθνους», και εκείνοι της Δημ. Συμπαράταξης, ώστε να καταδειχθεί ότι δεδομένης της διαφοροποίησης των συγκυβερνώντων ΑΝΕΛ. Υπενθυμίζεται πως καταψήφισαν επίσης η Χρυσή Αυγή και το ΚΚΕ, ενώ υπέρ του νομοσχεδίου για το Σύμφωνο Συμβίωσης τάχθηκαν η Δημοκρατική Συμπαράταξη, το Ποτάμι και η Ενωση Κεντρώων.

Στο περιθώριο αυτών των διαφοροποιήσεων, καταγράφηκαν και προσωπικές συγκρούσεις που σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις ξέφυγαν από κάθε όριο. Χαρακτηριστικές ήταν οι περιπτώσεις των συγκρούσεων Γ. Αμυρά (Ποτάμι) – Κ.Κατσίκη (ΑΝΕΛ) και Χρ.Καραγιαννίδη (ΣΥΡΙΖΑ) – Γ.Λαμπρούλη (ΚΚΕ). Κριτική ασκείται και για το γεγονός ότι στο νομοσχέδιο έχουν και πάλι συμπεριληφθεί πολλές άσχετες με το Σύμφωνο Συμβίωσης διατάξεις. «Είναι ένα όχημα στο οποίο επιβιβάζονται διάφορες ρυθμίσεις, άσχετες, ορισμένες εκ των οποίων είναι θεσμικά προβληματικές», σχολίασε σε παρέμβασή του ο κ. Ευ. Βενιζέλος.

Ναι στα άρθρα από 1 έως και 14 που αφορούν το σύμφωνο συμβίωσης μεταξύ ομόφυλων ζευγαριών, από τη ΝΔ τάχθηκαν τελικά 17 βουλευτές οι: Θεόδωρος Φορτσάκης, Νίκη Κεραμέως, Βασίλης Οικονόμου, Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη, Όλγα κεφαλογιάννη, Νικήτας Κακλαμάνης (όχι στο 7), Νίκος Δένδιας, Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης, Κώστας Χατζηδάκης, Γιώργος Κουμουτσάκος, Μιλτιάδης Βαρβιτσιώτης Κατερίνα Παπακώστα, Σίμος Κεδίκογλου , Κώστας Τασούλας (εκτός από τα άρθρα 9-10 και 11), Νίκος Παναγιωτόπουλος (εκτός από τα άρθρα 9-10 και 11), Χρήστος Δήμας και Γιάννης Πλακιωτάκης

Gay couples have been granted full marriage rights in a bid to defend people’s right to equality.

Opposition MPs helped the government pass with a wide majority legislation on Tuesday night that grants gay couples full marriage rights even though it did not have the full support of coalition partner Independent Greeks.

Three of the nine Independent Greeks deputies voted for the legislation, which was deemed a significant step toward the country aligning its civil rights with other European Union members. However, the bill passed thanks to the support it received from PASOK, Potami and the Union of Centrists, as well as some New Democracy MPs.

A total of 194 lawmakers voted for the bill and 55 voted against. Just 29 of 75 New Democracy deputies casted their ballot in favour of the legislation.

The conservative party decided not to back the legislation after feeling that its objections to some aspects of the law had not been satisfied. New Democracy had, for instance, asked for the law to make it clear that same-sex couples would not be allowed to adopt children.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said the passing of the bill helped defend people’s right to equality “regardless of gender and sexual orientation.”

“This ends a period of backwardness and shame for the state, which led to our country receiving international rulings against it,” he said. “Instead of celebrating, though, maybe we should apologise to hundreds of thousands of fellow citizens that have been denied their rights all these years.”

Tsipras said that the approval of same-sex civil partnerships, which was fiercely opposed by some Greek Orthodox bishops, showed that “Greek society is not as fearful and mean as some people wish to present it.”

“We have a long distance to cover to continue the daily struggle against every type of discrimination, especially against racism,” he said. “This struggle needs democratic forces and social movements to come together, it requires constant vigilance and political courage so we do not let darkness win.”

The law passed last night seeks to address omissions in 2008 legislation that recognised cohabitation for unmarried, but not gay, couples. In 2013, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that excluding same-sex couples from the cohabitation pact was discriminatory.

The latest legislation grants same-sex couples the option of having civil partnerships, which would offer them full marriage rights but not necessarily the right to adopt children.

The Greek parliament made a unanimous decision on Tuesday to recognise the Palestinian state, coinciding with Mahmoud Abbas’ official visit to Greece.

The Greek parliament has recognised the Palestine as an independent state, during an official visit to Greece by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The unanimous decision announced on Tuesday will see Greece change ‘PA [Palestinian Authority]’ to ‘Palestine’ in all of its official documentation.

While Palestine has been recognised by the Greek parliament, it has yet to be recognised by the Greek state.

The move has quickly received criticism however from the Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely.

He claimed that the decision ultimately “leads nowhere” and has “no practical significance”.

In recognised the independent Palestinian state, Greece joins Sweden who also recognised the state last year with the first embassy opening in Stockholm in January 2015.

Palestinian statehood has also been recognised by France, the UK and the Vatican but with restrictions that do not legally require them to take any action as a result.

While in September, the UN raised the Palestinian for the first time in the headquarters’ history as a symbolic gesture.

George Papandreou says it’s time Europe dealt with the refugee crisis before it gets further out of hand.

George Papandreou has predicted the refugee crisis will continue into the future during his appearance at a press conference at Istanbul’s Bogazici University on Monday.

“We will be seeing more and more refugee problems around the world, and Europe is a destination and will be a destination [for refugees] whether you want that or not,” Mr Papandreou said.

The president of the Socialist International went on to say that fences and walls would not be enough of a deterrent, “no matter how many” are built.

“It will not be only Syrians. As we know we have many from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Africa,” he said, stating that the next group of refugees would likely come from war-torn Yemen.

“So, we have to sit down and see how to move and really deal with this.”

The 63-year-old went on to praise the refugee action plan agreed upon between the EU and Turkey, stating that it is “a very important step”.

Under the plan, Turkey has promised to assist with the flow of refugees into Greece and the rest of Europe, so long as the EU speed-up membership talks and there is increased visa freedom.

During the conference, Mr Papandreou also touched upon the Cyprus issue.

He said that if a solution between the Turkish and Greek governments was to be reached in the short-term that it “would be an example” to other divided societies.

“We can show that there are other ways which are much better for societies,” he said.

Αυστραλός σέρφερ λαχτάρισε σήμερα όταν ένας καρχαρίας όρμησε πάνω στη σανίδα του στ΄ανοιχτά του Σίδνεϊ

Ο Ντιν Νόρμπερν εξήγησε ότι έκανε σερφ από νωρίς το πρωί μαζί με δύο φίλους του στ’ ανοιχτά της φημισμένης παραλίας Μπόντι Μπιτς.

«Ήμουν ξαπλωμένος μπρούμυτα, ετοιμαζόμουν να κωπηλατήσω, θέλησα να καθίσω πάνω στη σανίδα και τότε ο καρχαρίας προσγειώθηκε στη σανίδα μου. Έπαθα σοκ, όπως μπορείτε να φανταστείτε. Και όσο γρήγορα αναπήδησε ο καρχαρίας, τόσο γρήγορα βούτηξε ξανά στο νερό, κολύμπησε προς την πλευρά ενός από τους φίλους μου, πέρασε κάτω από την σανίδα του και μετά έφυγε. Ήταν αρκετά σουρεαλιστικό. Ήταν η πρώτη μου συνάντηση με καρχαρία και ελπίζω ότι να είναι η τελευταία».

Οι διασώστες στο Μπόντι Μπις επιβεβαίωσαν το περιστατικό και εξήγησαν ότι ο σέρφερ δεν τραυματίστηκε. Ένας από τους φίλους του που είδε τον καρχαρία από κοντά, είπε ότι είχε μήκος δύο μέτρα και ότι ήταν καρχαρίνος βραχύουρος.

Οι διασώστες μίλησαν στους δύο άνδρες, οι οποίοι δεν πρόκειται να ξεχάσουν την περιπέτεια αυτή σύμφωνα με όσα έγραψαν στο Facebook.

Ο Ντιν Νόρμπερν, ένας δεινός σέρφερ, εξήγησε ότι έφθασε στην ακτή, που απείχε 60 μέτρα από το σημείο που βρισκόταν, κολυμπώντας όσο το δυνατόν γρηγορότερα.

Ωστόσο ο δρόμος της επιστροφής του φάνηκε μια αιωνιότητα. «Θυμήθηκα ξανά τα μαθήματα κολύμβησης που είχα κάνει και κολύμπησα όσο πιο γρήγορα μπορούσα μέχρι την ακτή. Ένιωσα τεράστια ανακούφιση φθάνοντας στην ξηρά».

An officer of the police’s DIAS motorcycle squad fainted in court on Tuesday while under cross-examination from the chief judge regarding the events surrounding the murder of musician Pavlos Fyssas by a member of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in September 2013.

Officer Dimitris Bagios told the court he had been dispatched to the scene where the stabbing took place in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini, maintaining the role of “observer” as Fyssas came under attack by a large group of black-clad men.

The assault followed a verbal altercation in a bar, after which the men allegedly pursued Fyssas outside the establishment and were joined by others before attacking him in the street. Witnesses have said that the 34-year-old artist was surrounded by about 50 attackers until Giorgos Roupakias drove up to the scene and delivered the fatal blow several minutes later.

Several police officers who were at the scene of the attack have told the court that they were reluctant to intervene as they were outnumbered by the assailants.

Bagios on Tuesday said that he saw about five or six black-clad men fleeing from the larger group but did not pursue them or call on other officers to take up the chase. He also described how two fellow officers had grabbed Fyssas by the arms after the gang had dispersed, adding that the 34-year-old lifted up his bloody shirt and said: “Not me, guys. He stabbed me.”

When he came under questioning by presiding judge Maria Lepeniotou, who asked why he failed to take action and whether he found his behaviour as a responding police officer justifiable, Bagios claimed he felt unwell and fainted as he was led out of the courtroom. Proceedings were interrupted as he was checked by medics and then postponed until Wednesday.
