Pope Francis to travel to the Greek island in an attempt to raise awareness on migrant crisis.

The Vatican Leader announced on Thursday that he will make a lightning trip to Lesvos, the Greek island on the frontline of Europe’s migrant crisis.

”Accepting the invitation from his Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, and the president of the Greek Republic, his Holiness Francis will travel to Lesvos on April 16, 2016” where he “will meet with refugees,” the Vatican said in a statement.

Francis, who has made the defense of the world’s downtrodden a cornerstone of his papacy, will visit the Aegean Sea island for a few hours to draw the international community’s attention to the suffering of asylum seekers, many of them on the run from a devastating war in Syria.

Greece’s islands are the point of first arrival in Europe for hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who make the perilous boat journey from Turkey.

“It’s very clear that the pope recognizes that there is a significant emergency going on,” said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi.

“Just as he went to Lampedusa, which was then the front line of the Mediterranean route, now that there is this difficult, dramatic situation on the Aegean front, he naturally wants to be present to show a sense of solidarity and responsibility.”

Lombardi said the pope’s trip to Lesvos was “a joint initiative” that will “show that various Christian churches are united when faced with great emergencies”.

The pope, who will set off from Rome mid morning and return at the end of the afternoon, will visit a refugee centre before making a stop at the port of Lesvos, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told the press.

Pope Francis in 2013 visited the Italian island of Lampedusa, where large numbers of migrants were arriving from conflict-hit Libya.

In March, the EU signed an accord with Turkey setting out measures for reducing the continent’s worst migration crisis since World War II, including the shipping back to Turkish territory of migrants who arrive in Greece.

But on Thursday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the EU that Ankara would not implement the key deal if Brussels failed to fulfil its side of the bargain – which included six billion euros in aid for Turkey for the over 2.7 million Syrian refugees it is hosting.

The first transfer of over 200 migrants from Greece took place on Monday but the process has been stalled by a last-minute flurry of asylum applications by migrants desperate to avoid expulsion.

Michalis Dimitrakopoulos awarded first place at World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship.

For the second year in a row, Greece has taken out first place at the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (CIGS).

The winning barista was Michalis Dimitrakopoulos from The Underdog, a back-to-back win for the Athens-based cafe/bar following George Koustoumpardis’ win in 2015.

Dimitrakopoulos took to Instagram to express his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to compete.

“I would like to thank all the people supporting me for my first time [competing at the worlds],” he posted.

Four world coffee championship events took place from 29 March to 1 April at Hotelex in Shanghai, China, where more than 70 baristas competed from around the globe.

In Dimitrakopoulos’ category, competitors were required to spin a wheel to determine which ingredients they would use, followed by a 10 minute window to produce two identical coffees and alcohol-based designer drinks, along with two Irish coffees.

The winning barista attributed the achievement to his great love of coffee and a commitment to learning as much as he can about the products in use.

In second place was Slovakia’s Martin Hudak, followed by Berg Wu from Taiwan in third.

Από την Νότια Αφρική για την αποφυγή λαθροθηρίας

Ένα νέο σχέδιο ακτιβιστών προβλέπει την αερομεταφορά ρινόκερων από τη Νότια Αφρική στην Αυστραλία, ώστε να δημιουργηθεί μία «βιολογική δικλείδα ασφαλείας» ενάντια στην αυξημένη λαθροθηρία.

Οι οργανώσεις προστασίας του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος έχουν δοκιμάσει διάφορες προσεγγίσεις για την προστασία των ρινόκερων, όπως περιφράξεις, περιπολίες, ακόμα και προληπτική κοπή των κεράτων τους.

Τα κέρατα είναι δημοφιλή ως φάρμακα και σύμβολο κύρους στην Ασία, κυρίως στις μεγάλες αγορές της Κίνας και του Βιετνάμ, και με την τιμή τους να φτάνει τα 80.000 δολάρια ανά κιλό, οι λαθροκυνηγοί συνεχίζουν να κυνηγούν τα απειλούμενα ζώα. Γι’ αυτόν το λόγο ένας Αυστραλός κτηματομεσίτης και ακτιβιστής εμπνεύστηκε το καινοτόμο σχέδιο για τη μεταφορά των ρινόκερων στην Αυστραλία.

«Δεν υπάρχει ασφαλές μέρος στην Αφρική για τους ρινόκερους σήμερα», δήλωσε ο Ρέι Ντίαρλοβ, ο οποίος έχει καταγωγή από τη Νότια Αφρική. «Έχουν σχεδόν εξαφανιστεί στην ήπειρο εκτός από τη Νότια Αφρική, όπου παραμένει κατά πάσα πιθανότητα το 85 με 90% των λευκών και μαύρων ρινόκερων του νότιου είδους» πρόσθεσε.

Το σχέδιο του Ντίαρλοβ είναι να μεταφέρει 80 ρινόκερους στην Αυστραλία, 20 ανά έτος για τα επόμενα τέσσερα χρόνια. Τον Μάιο, οι πρώτοι έξι λευκοί ρινόκεροι θα μπουν σε καραντίνα στο Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ της Νότιας Αφρικής. Στη συνέχεια, τον Αύγουστο, θα μεταφερθούν στην Αυστραλία όπου θα περάσουν ακόμη δύο μήνες σε καραντίνα στο ζωολογικό κήπο Ταρόνγκα προτού φτάσουν στον τελικό προορισμό τους, το πάρκο σαφάρι Μονάρτο, έξω από την Αδελαΐδα.

Η αερομεταφορά ζώων βάρους δύο τόνων μπορεί να φαίνεται σαν μια υπερβολική αντίδραση, ωστόσο οι πρόσφατοι αριθμοί λαθροθηρίας δείχνουν ότι απαιτείται επείγουσα δράση. Σύμφωνα με επίσημα στοιχεία, ο ρυθμός θανάτωσης ρινόκερων έχει υπερβεί για πρώτη φορά το ποσοστό γεννήσεων. Το 2007, μόνο 13 ρινόκεροι σκοτώθηκαν στη νότια Αφρική. Το 2013 ο αριθμός αυτός ανήλθε στους 1.004, το 2014 στους 1.200, και το 2015 σε περίπου 1.500.

Με αυτό το ρυθμό, οι νότιοι λευκοί ρινόκεροι απειλούνται με εξαφάνιση μέσα σε δέκα χρόνια. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο ο Ντίαρλοβ αποφάσισε να ξεκινήσει άμεσα την αερομεταφορά των ρινόκερων, με κόστος περίπου 75.000 δολάρια ανά ζώο. Η Αυστραλία επιλέχτηκε ως ένα από τα ασφαλέστερα μέρη στον πλανήτη με κατάλληλες καιρικές συνθήκες, όμως με την ενδεχόμενη πρόθεση επαναπατρισμού των ρινόκερων στην Αφρική, όταν λυθεί το πρόβλημα της λαθροθηρίας.

Greece has condemned the use of tear gas and rubber bullets by FYROM police against migrants at a border camp as ‘dangerous and deplorable’.

Dozens of migrants and refugees were wounded when FYROM police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at crowds on the Greek side of the border, aid workers say, an act Athens called “dangerous and deplorable”.

More than 10,000 migrants and refugees have been stranded at the Greek border outpost of Idomeni since February after a cascade of border shutdowns across the Balkans closed off their route to central and western Europe.

An earlier attempt by a large group of migrants to cross the border fence had resulted in Sunday’s confrontation, a FYROM official said.

Greece said police on the FYROM side of their joint frontier used tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades to push back the migrants. FYROM authorities would only confirm they had used tear gas.

A deputy field coordinator with medical charity Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) told Reuters that, of around 300 people treated, more than 30 had injuries caused by rubber bullets.

A news release issued by MSF quoted one doctor with the charity saying three children had been taken in to its field clinic with head injuries caused by rubber bullets.

Police in Skopje said three officers were also hurt.

The European Union is implementing an accord under which all new arrivals to Greece will be sent back to Turkey if they do not meet asylum criteria.

A FYROM official who asked to remain anonymous said that a large group of migrants left Idomeni camp on Sunday morning and surged towards the fence.

“They threw rocks at the FYROM police. The police fired tear gas in response,” the official said.

“The migrants were pushing against the fence but standing on the Greek side of the border. The fence is still there, they have not broken through.”

Reuters witnesses said a small group of migrants attempted to talk to FYROM border guards, asking for them to open the border. After given a negative response, they and other migrants started walking towards the fence.

FYROM police fired tear gas, and some migrants hurled back some gas canisters and rocks, they said.

In an unusually strong statement, George Kyritsis, a spokesman for migration coordinators in the Greek government, said the use of force was unacceptable.

“The indiscriminate use of chemicals, rubber bullets and stun grenades against vulnerable populations, and particularly without reasons for such force, is a dangerous and deplorable act,” Kyritsis said.

More than 50,000 refugees and migrants are stranded in Greece as a result of the border shutdowns.

Achilleas Tzemos, MSF deputy field coordinator, told Reuters more than 300 people had been treated at the makeshift camp.

In addition to more than 30 treated for rubber bullet injuries, over 30 had open wounds and 200 had respiratory problems from tear gas exposure. “Among those with breathing difficulties were quite a few women and children,” he said.

Free TV Australia has written to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull requesting an urgent meeting with the lobby group and metropolitan television network bosses amid fears the government is about to ignore their calls for a cut to their $173 million-a-year licence fees.

Fairfax Media understands the letter, sent late last week after a Thursday telephone conference arranged by Free TV Australia, asks the Prime Minister to meet Seven West Media’s Tim Worner, Nine Entertainment’s Hugh Marks, Ten Network Holdings’ Paul Anderson and Free TV chairman Harold Mitchell.

Networks bosses were alarmed last Monday by  a Fairfax Media report that the chances of a dramatic cut in licence fees, from 4.5 per cent to 1 per cent of broadcasters’ revenues, have weakened as the Turnbull government prepares to hand down its pre-election budget next month.

There was intensive lobbying last week as a profit warning by Nine sent sector share prices plunging, underlining investors’ fears about the structural threats facing free-to-air television from unregulated foreign services such as Netflix, which do not pay licence fees or have content obligations.

Bosses are ramping up pressure, apoplectic that the licence fee issue, their shared top priority, is likely to be ignored again. Last March, when he was communications minister, Mr Turnbull killed hopes of a near-term licence fee cut as the government prepared a tough 2015 budget.

But within two months then-prime minister Tony Abbott, who had stymied Mr Turnbull’s attempts to loosen media ownership restrictions, agreed to review licence fees after he met the chief executives of Seven, Nine and Ten and their regional affiliates. 

As revealed by Fairfax Media, that review found broadly in favour of the broadcasters’ case and hopes had grown for a significant cut, which could spark a rerating of the sector.

But with the government again facing tight fiscal restraints, some Canberra sources predict a more phased reduction, and others saying it is likely there will be no cuts to licence fees in the budget on May 3.

One TV executive expressed dismay at such a possibility, saying: “Turnbull, before he was Prime Minister, was saying ad nauseam that the whole regime was outdated. He’s been the proponent all along so it’s a bit baffling why there’s no action; but maybe that’s indicative of how this government is going.”

It is understood a final decision has yet to be made by the government. A spokesman for Mr Turnbull declined to comment.

DETECTIVES investigating the alleged murder of home invader Ricky Slater-Dickson are identifying a significant number of burglaries committed by him in the weeks leading up to his death, including a violent attack on a young woman after she woke to find the suspect in her bedroom.

The terrified 22-year-old woman was repeatedly punched during the home invasion at The Junction just one week before Slater-Dickson lay unresponsive in a neighbouring suburb after allegedly being choked by home owner Ben Batterham after he found the convicted rapist inside his house.

The victim identified Slater-Dickson as her attacker after seeing reports of his death, and her suspicions were confirmed when a mobile phone taken during her attack was found at the alleged murder scene in Hamilton.

Her attack only ended when her screams were heard by other residents, Slater-Dickson running from the house after a door was opened by a person running to rescue the woman.

The Newcastle Herald understands it is one of a number of burglaries identified by Strike Force Bedra detectives as they work on the background of 34-year-old Slater-Dickson following his death on March 27, just hours after he was allegedly found inside Mr Batterham’s home and a struggle ensued.

He was then chased outside where a second struggle occurred on Cleary Street before Slater-Dickson was found unresponsive.

Mr Batterham has been charged with Slater-Dickson’s murder.

Slater-Dickson’s recent criminal history remains one of the focuses of Strike Force Bedra, set up to investigate the alleged murder.

His grieving mother, Beryl Dickson, has reportedly told Daily Mail Australia that her 120kg son “had a problem” with ice and confirmed a photograph of a man smoking from a lit pipe was her son from about “four or five” years ago.

It is understood detectives are sifting through burglaries throughout Newcastle and inner-city suburbs near where Slater-Dickson was living in Hamilton South.

They have identified an unknown number where he was a firm suspect.

But it was the attack at The Junction a week before his death which has highlighted his burglary motives.

Before it was known that Slater-Dickson was responsible, the victim had told police the suspect was of Aboriginal appearance and had attacked her after she woke in her bed to find him rummaging through her room.

He began to assault her before another resident was able to startle him into running from the house.

The time of the attack was almost exactly the same time and on a Saturday night – a week before Slater-Dickson was to enter Mr Batterham’s residence.

It is alleged Mr Batterham and a friend found Slater-Dickson inside the house where a confrontation took place before the invader escaped.

But a second confrontation took place down Cleary Street, where Mr Batterham is alleged to have choked Slater-Dickson after being assaulted by him.

Slater-Dickson was sentenced to at least four years’ jail for the rape of a 16-year-old girl inside a Tamworth home in 2007, after he pushed his way inside and bashed her before sexually assaulting her.

He was also jailed for a ram raid on a Nauti & Nice store at Sandgate before being released on appeal last December.

Mr Batterham, who remains in maximum security as his renowned defence barrister Winston Terracini SC prepares a bail application, has also reportedly undergone blood tests for HIV and hepatitis after allegedly being bitten by Slater-Dickson during the altercation on Cleary Street.

More than 50 students have been suspended from Toronto High following a cyber-bullying incident that went viral around the school. 

The Herald understands the incident involved a game in which students’ names were messaged to other students via Facebook with the intention of eliciting negative comments. The Department of Education confirmed more than 50 students had received short suspensions of up to four days and a small number had been given long suspensions of up to 20 days.

In a newsletter sent to parents on Friday, school principal Mark McConville said students who had made negative, abusive or harassing comments about other students on social media had been suspended, as had students who had ‘liked’ the inappropriate comments.

“Toronto High School does not tolerate any harassment of any students,” he wrote.

“Imagine if it was your child who opened up their Facebook account to find over 50 ‘likes’ about a negative/abusive/harassing post about them.”

Mr McConville said all students involved would receive “additional support and guidance in the appropriate use of technology” and appealed to parents to support the school’s actions.

“We want to keep all students safe and support those students subject to disciplinary procedures in improving their decisions and actions in future.”

A Toronto community Facebook page was alight with comments about the incident on Friday, with many supporting the school’s zero-tolerance approach.

Nicole Charlesworth, whose son Nick was questioned but not punished because he had posted a positive comment about another student, said the incident reinforced the dangers of social media for young people.

“My son’s face was white when he came home, he was really shaken up by it.

“I  think the school’s response was appropriate. This sort of thing needs to be nipped in the bud straight away.”

However Donna Stanbury, whose daughter Tanaya faces suspension for posting what she described as an ‘in’ joke about a friend, said the punishment was not justified.

Ms Stanbury said Tanaya made sarcastic comments about two friends who were sitting next to her as she did it.

“It was an ‘in’ joke between them,” Ms Stanbury said. “In my opinion, they all should be punished, but suspending everyone is taking it to extremes.

“I would prefer to see the school bring in an anti-bullying expert to talk to all the kids.

“My daughter is very angry about it. She thinks it is unfair.”

Toronto High School has 980 students. The students suspended were from all years. An assembly was called on Thursday morning and all students who had participated in the posts asked to identify themselves.

Το ημερολόγιο ενός Αυστραλού αξιωματικού στην κατεχόμενη από τους Γερμανούς Κρήτη, πρόκειται να εκδοθεί από το Ιστορικό Μουσείο Κρήτης τον Μάιο.

Σύμφωνα με τον συν-επιμελητή του ημερολογίου, Mike Sweet, πρόκειται για μια μοναδική διορατική ματιά του James De Mole Carstairs στους δεσμούς μεταξύ των συμμάχων στρατιωτών και των Κρητών προστατών τους.

To από καιρό ξεχασμένο ημερολόγιο του υπολοχαγού James De Mole Carstairs, ο οποίος πολέμησε στη Μάχη της Κρήτης και φυγάδευσε έναν μεγάλο αριθμό Συμμάχων στρατιωτών από το νησί προς τα τέλη του 1941, θα παρουσιαστεί στην Κρήτη τον ερχόμενο μήνα, μέσα στο πλαίσιο των εορτασμών της 75ης Επετείου της Μάχης της Κρήτης.

Παραγωγή του Συνδέσμου Ιστορικών Μελετών Κρήτης, στην αγγλική και ελληνική γλώσσα, το έργο είναι αποτέλεσμα της συνεργασίας μεταξύ του Ιστορικού Μουσείου Κρήτης στο Ηράκλειο και των συνεπιμελητών, Ian Frazer και Michael Sweet, οι οποίοι εργάστηκαν με τους Κρήτες ιστορικούς, Κλαίρη Μητσοτάκη, Κώστα Μαμαλάκη και Ντενίς Αλεβίζου.

Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί, ότι το βιβλίο αυτό θα είναι το έβδομο της σειράς “Μαρτυρίες”, που εξέδωσε το Ιστορικό Μουσείο Κρήτης και αναφέρεται σε διαφορετικά περιστατικά της Μάχης της Κρήτης και της γερμανικής κατοχής.

Προηγούμενες αναφορές περιλαμβάνουν και τις μαρτυρίες του αρχαιολόγου και μυστικού πράκτορα από την Tασμανία, Tom J. Dunbabin, και του αγωνιστή της αντίστασης, Γιώργου Τζίτζικα.

Από τις εκατοντάδες των συμμάχων, οι οποίοι κατόρθωσαν να διαφύγουν μετά τη Μάχη της Κρήτης, ελάχιστα ημερολόγια έχουν διασωθεί. Ακόμη λιγότερα στοιχεία έχουν δημοσιευθεί από όλα εκείνα τα οποία αναφέρονται στις διηγήσεις όσον αφορά τους δεσμούς των συμμάχων στρατιωτών με τους ντόπιους που τους περιέθαλψαν και τους αγωνιστές της αντίστασης που έπαιξαν κύριο ρόλο στην απόδρασή τους από το νησί. Το ημερολόγιο του James Carstairs ανήκει σ’ αυτήν την κατηγορία.

Ο Carstairs γεννήθηκε στη Μελβούρνη το 1914, και μετά τη στρατιωτική του θητεία ασχολήθηκε με τη γεωργία στη Βικτώρια, μέχρι το θάνατό του το 2007.

Το 1980 αποφάσισε να γράψει τα απομνημονεύματά του, μέσα στα οποία ήταν και το κεφάλαιο των εμπειριών του στην Κρήτη το 1941, από σημειώσεις που είχε κρατήσει τότε.

Ο ερευνητής Ian Frazer, ήλθε για πρώτη φορά σ’ επαφή μ’ αυτό το κεφάλαιο (ένα από τα πολλά τα οποία αναφέρονταν στις εμπειρίες του πολέμου), στη Βιβλιοθήκη του Anzac House στη Μελβούρνη το 2011, η επιμέλεια εντούτοις του ημερολογίου δεν έγινε δυνατή παρά το 2015, όταν εντοπίστηκε ο γιος του Carstairs.

Ακολούθησε η ανάγνωση των χειρογράφων από το Ιστορικό Μουσείο Κρήτης, το οποίο έκρινε ότι ήταν μία πολύτιμη ευκαιρία να παρουσιάσει μία αξιόλογη ιστορική πτυχή. Μία πτυχή η οποία όχι απλώς παρουσιάζει τις καθημερινές περιπέτειες και οδύνες ενός στρατιώτη των συμμάχων στην Κρήτη, αλλά φωτίζει και τους στενούς δεσμούς που δημιουργήθηκαν με τους αρχηγούς της Αντίστασης, καθώς επίσης και το βάρος της ευθύνης που επωμίστηκε για τη φυγάδευση άνω των 80 αντρών, γεγονός που οφείλεται αποκλειστικά στην επινοητικότητά του.

Το ημερολόγιο του Carstairs είναι μοναδικό για πολλούς λόγους. Κατ’ αρχήν είναι η μόνη λεπτομερής αναφορά ενός αξιωματικού ο οποίος ήταν υπεύθυνος για τη φυγάδευση ενός μεγάλου αριθμού στρατιωτών που είχε οργανωθεί από τις μυστικές υπηρεσίες της Βρετανίας. Είναι, επίσης, από τα λίγα ντοκουμέντα που αναφέρονται σε συγκεκριμένους αγωνιστές της Κρητικής Αντίστασης στους οποίους βασίστηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της πορείας η οποία ξεκίνησε στη Χώρα Σφακίων, αμέσως μετά την αιχμαλωσία των Συμμαχικών Δυνάμεων και τελείωσε σε μια ερημική παραλία, νότια του Ηρακλείου, πέντε μήνες αργότερα.

Το να κρατά κάποιος ημερολόγιο κάτω από τέτοιες συνθήκες, ήταν πάρα πολύ επικίνδυνο και ο Carstairs ήταν ιδιαίτερα προσεκτικός στο να κρύβει τις σημειώσεις και τα σκίτσα του (ήταν ένας ταλαντούχος καλλιτέχνης) όχι μόνο από τους Γερμανούς, αλλά και από τη Βρετανική μυστική υπηρεσία πληροφοριών στο Κάιρο, μετά την απόδρασή του.

Από όλους τους κρυψώνες που καταγράφονται στο ημερολόγιό του, τα πιο δυνατά και αποκαλυπτικά σημεία είναι εκείνα που αναφέρονται στο χωριό Βαφές, 20 χλμ. από τα Χανιά, και την προστασία που δέχτηκε εκεί από την οικογένεια Βανδουλάκη.

Η φιλία η οποία αναπτύχθηκε με τον Βανδουλάκη, Έλληνα στρατιώτη ο οποίος αμέσως μετά την ήττα των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων κατατάχθηκε στην Αντίσταση, εξελίχθηκε σε στενό δεσμό στο διάστημα των τριών μηνών που έμεινε ο Carstairs στο χωριό.

Να σημειωθεί ότι ο “Vi”, όπως τον αποκαλούσε ο Carstairs, συνέχισε να στηρίζει τους συμμάχους, ακόμη και όταν οι κάτοικοι του χωριού είχαν στραφεί εναντίον τους. Η στήριξη του Βανδουλάκη στον Carstairs και τους άντρες του ήταν το ίδιο δυνατή μέχρι την απόδρασή τους από το νησί.

Το Σεπτέμβρη του 1941, ο Carstairs, πριν φύγει από το Βαφές, άφησε τα πολύτιμα χειρόγραφά του στον Βανδουλάκη, ο οποίος έσπευσε να τα κρύψει επιμελώς και να του τα στείλει στην Αυστραλία μετά το τέλος του πολέμου.

Η αναφορά του Carstairs στη σχέση με τον Βανδουλάκη, εκτός του ότι είναι σημαντική, συνάμα είναι αξιόλογη και για το γεγονός ότι φωτίζει μερικές από τις πρώτες ενέργειες στην αντίσταση μιας οικογένειας η οποία έπαιξε αργότερα βασικό ρόλο στη στήριξη Βρετανών μυστικών πρακτόρων, όπως ήταν οι Xan Fielding και Guy Turrell οι οποίοι είχαν τη βάση τους στο Βαφές το 1942 και 1943.

Μια άλλη οικογένεια στην περιοχή του Ρεθύμνου που έπαιξε ρόλο στις εμπειρίες του Carstairs είναι του Χαροκόπου στον Πατσό, στο βόρειο άκρο του Φαραγγίου Αμάρι.

Τον Οκτώβρη του 1941, δύο εβδομάδες μετά την άφιξή του στον Πατσό, ο Carstairs συνάντησε δύο Βρετανούς μυστικούς πράκτορες οι οποίοι του ζήτησαν να τους βοηθήσει στο να οργανώσουν την απόδραση στρατιωτών των Συμμαχικών Δυνάμεων οι οποίοι κρύβονταν στο Φαράγγι Αμάρι.

Ο Carstairs περιγράφει στο ημερολόγιό του, πώς, μετά από τέσσερις εβδομάδες στον Πατσό, το Νοέμβρη του 1941 πήρε την εντολή να μετακινηθεί στη νότια ακτή. Κύριο ρόλο στη μετακίνηση αυτή έπαιξε ο γνωστός αρχηγός Αντίστασης, Καπετάν Πετρακογιώργης, ο οποίος είχε τη βάση του στο χωριό Μαγαρικάτι και έλεγχε την περιοχή όπου το φαράγγι Αμαρίου ενώνεται με την πεδιάδα Μεσσαρά.

Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί εδώ, ότι η περιοχή αυτή είχε καταστεί ο βασικός χώρος, όχι μόνο για τον Carstairs, αλλά για πλειάδα φυγαδεύσεων που έλαβαν χώρα αργότερα, για ενέργειες μυστικών πρακτόρων και κλειδί εφοδίων για την αντίσταση, συνδέοντας χωριά της περιοχής Αμαρίου με τις ακτές του νότου.

Στο ημερολόγιό του, ο Carstairs, δίνει λεπτομερείς πληροφορίες αναφορικά με τις επαφές του με τον αρχηγό της αντίστασης, φωτίζοντας τον τρόπο με τον οποίο λειτουργούσαν αυτές οι σχέσεις.

Πρόκειται για μια φορτισμένη περίοδο για τον Crastairs όπου οι ηγετικές του ικανότητες έμπαιναν σε φοβερή δοκιμασία. Οι προκλήσεις που αντιμετώπισε ήταν φοβερές. Ξεκίνησαν με την ευθύνη που ανέλαβε να μεταφέρει πάνω από 80 άντρες με ασφάλεια από τον Πατσό στο Μαγαρικάρι (μια διαδρομή τριών ημερών), και μετά όταν έφτασαν εκεί, μετά από τρεις εβδομάδες περίπου, να τους μεταφέρει στην ακτή, μια διαδικασία άλλων τριών ημερών πορείας.

Μετά, έπρεπε να περάσουν το Φαράγγι Μεσαρά, το οποίο περιφρουρούσαν οι Γερμανοί, και στη συνέχεια, διασχίζοντας τα απόκρημνα Αρετούσια Όρη, να φθάσουν στην ερημική ακτή “Τρεις Εκκλησιές”, 60 χλμ. νότια του Ηρακλείου.

Εδώ, η Οδύσσεια του Carstairs φθάνει στο αποκορύφωμά της. Μέσα στο βαθύ σκοτάδι τη νύχτα 26/27 Νοεμβρίου, στο HMS Hedgehog, επιβιβάζονται 90 στρατιώτες, η ομάδα που είχε οδηγήσει εκεί ο Carstairs.

Στην επίσημη αναφορά του ταξιδιού στην Αλεξάνδρεια καταγράφονται 28 Αυστραλοί, 28 Νεοζηλανδοί, 11 Βρετανοί, 11 Κύπριοι, τέσσερις Έλληνες και οχτώ άλλοι.

Ένας από τους άντρες ήταν ο στενός φίλος και συνεργάτης του Carstairs, Ευάγγελος Βανδουλάκης τον οποίο κατάφερε να επιβιβάσει λαθραία.

Μετά τη λήξη του πολέμου ο James De Mole Carstairs επέστρεψε στην Αυστραλία όπου ασχολήθηκε με τη γεωργία στη Βικτώρια.

Το Μάιο του 1991 επισκέφθηκε την Ελλάδα για την 50ή επέτειο της Μάχης της Κρήτης.

Στην Κρήτη αναζωπυρώθηκαν οι στενοί δεσμοί φιλίας με τις οικογένειες Χαροκόπου και Βανδουλάκη.

Ο James Carstairs απεβίωσε το 2007, σε ηλικία 93 χρόνων.

Το ημερολόγιο του Carstairs ρίχνει φως σ’ ένα ζωτικής σημασίας κεφάλαιο της ιστορίας της Κρήτης στον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.

Πρόκειται για μια πολύπτυχη αφήγηση η οποία αποκαλύπτει το βάθος των δεσμών που δημιουργήθηκαν μεταξύ Aυστραλών στρατιωτών, χωρικών και ανταρτών, καθώς επίσης και τη λειτουργία των βρετανικών μυστικών υπηρεσιών στην Κρήτη.

Πάνω απ’ όλα βέβαια πρόκειται για μια απίστευτα περιπετειώδη ιστορία, βασισμένη απόλυτα στην πραγματικότητα.

Η παρουσίαση του Ημερολογίου Carstairs, θα γίνει στο Ιστορικό Μουσείο της Κρήτης, στο Ηράκλειο την 23η Μαΐου.

Ο Γάλλος πρόεδρος Φρανσουά Ολάντ εγκατέλειψε τον προηγούμενο μήνα τα σχέδια που είχε εξαγγείλει για την αφαίρεση της γαλλικής υπηκοότητας από όσους καταδικάζονται για τρομοκρατικά εγκλήματα. Η εξαγγελία αυτή, είχε γίνει λίγες ημέρες μετά τις τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις του Νοεμβρίου στο Παρίσι, που κόστισαν τη ζωή 130 ανθρώπων.

Οι πολίτες της Αυστραλίας που έχουν διπλή υπηκοότητα και έχουν εμπλακεί σε τρομοκρατικές πράξεις, είναι μέλη απαγορευμένων από το νόμο οργανώσεων ή έχουν καταδικαστεί για αδίκημα που σχετίζεται με την τρομοκρατία, θα χάνουν την αυστραλιανή υπηκοότητα δήλωσε ο υπουργός Μετανάστευσης της Αυστραλίας Πίτερ Ντάτον.

«Υπάρχει ένα σημαντικό τίμημα που πρέπει να πληρώσουν όσοι εμπλέκονται σε πράξεις τρομοκρατίας και έχουν διπλή υπηκοότητα», τόνισε ο υπουργός.

Μια ομάδα κυνηγών στη Φλόριντα των ΗΠΑ έπιασαν και σκότωσαν γιγάντιο αλιγάτορα 4,5 μέτρων και 360 κιλών, ο οποίος έτρωγε τις αγελάδες της περιοχής.

Ο ιδιοκτήτης της φάρμας Lee Lightsey και ο κυνηγός Blake Godwin εντόπισαν το γιγάντιο ερπετό στις 2 Απριλίου. Το περασμένο Σάββατο ο αλιγάτορας έχοντας τρομοκρατήσει τα κοπάδια μιας φάρμας στην πόλη Okeechobee, δέχτηκε το μοιραίο χτύπημα.

Ήταν τόσο μεγάλος που χρειάστηκε εκσκαφέας για να τον ανασύρουν. Στη συνέχεια χρησιμοποίησαν το βαρύ όχημα για να επιδείξουν τη «λεία» τους.

Σύμφωνα με τη «Daily Mail», σκοπεύουν να προσφέρουν το κρέας του αλιγάτορα σε φιλανθρωπικές οργανώσεις κι εκείνοι θα κρατήσουν και θα ταριχεύσουν το κορμί του για να το επιδεικνύουν σε σόου και εκθέσεις.
