This year marks 101 years since the landing of our troops at Gallipoli and 75 years since the Battle of Crete.

St Spyridon Church at Kingsford in Sydney was dedicated as a House of God by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos and as a War Memorial church by the Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler VC, AK, in 1975.

For the past 38 years we have honoured all those who fought for Australia and Greece in the Two World Wars and in other Conflicts around the world by conducting the Trisagion Service for Anzac Day.

This year’s ANZAC commemoration will be especially honoured by the participation of the Evzones from the Greek Presidential Guard in Athens.

The Evzones are in Australia, invited by the Hellenic Club in Sydney. They are coming to Spyridon Church due to the advice given by the Consul General for Greece in Sydney, Dr Stavros Kyrimis, who recognizes the importance of Anzac Day

Οι Εύζωνες παρήλασαν σήμερα στην εθνική επέτειο των Αυστραλών ANZAC Day και καταχειροκροτήθηκαν

Η επέτειος των ΑΝΖΑΚs, που τιμάται σήμερα έχει πολύμεγάλη σχέση με την Ελλάδα και τον Ελληνικό. Κατά τον πρώτο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, ήταν από την Λήμνο που αναχώρησαν οι Αυστραλοί και Νεοζηλανδοί στρατιώτες για την Καλλίπολη. Κατά τον δεύτερο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, οι ANZACs πολέμησαν και στην Ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα και στην Κρήτη. Οι επιχειρήσεις αυτές έχουν φέρει τις δύο χώρες και τους δύο λαούς πιο κοντά.

Σήμερα η πρωινή δέηση στο κενοτάφιο του Martin Place του Σύδνεϋ, σημαδεύτηκε από την παρουσία των έξι Ελλήνων Ευζώνων και του υπολοχαγού τους, που είναι αυτές τις ημέρες την πόλη.

Οι Εύζωνες έλαμψαν με την παρουσία τους και καταχειροκροτήθηκαν στη συνέχεια όταν παρήλασαν κατά μήκος της κεντρικής οδού George Street.

Χθες, Κυριακή των Βαΐων, το άγημα της Ελληνικής προεδρικής Φρουράς εκκλησιάστηκε στον ναό των Αγίων Πάντων του προαστείου Belmore, όπου τιμήθηκε και η επέτειος της ηρωικής εξόδου του Μεσολογγίου.

Οι Έλληνες Εύζωνες είναι να παρουσιαστούν σήμερα και στην διάρκεια του αγώνα ράγκμπι ανάμεσα στους Roosters και τους Dragons (στις 3 το μεσημέρι), ενώ ολοκληρώνουν την επίσκεψή τους στο Σύδνεϋ την Τετάρτη το βράδυ, οπότε και αναχωρούν για την Ελλάδα.

BLESSED with clear skies and an unseasonably balmy morning, Hunter people flocked to the popular seaside Anzac Day dawn service at Nobbys on Monday to mark the 101^st anniversary of the start of the Gallipoli conflict.

A crowd estimated by organisers to be up to 50,000 stood solemnly on the beach, across the sprawling lawns surrounding the stage and and silhouetted atop the Fort Scratchley hill to pay respects to men and women who have served in all theatres of war.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with veterans and serving personnel were families who had roused young children from their beds hours before dawn, dignitaries, schoolchildren and a number of players from the Knights and Manly-Warringah rugby league teams, who sacrificed a sleep-in ahead of their match at Hunter Stadium later in the day to attend the ceremony.

Newcastle RSL sub-branch president and master of ceremonies Ken Fayle said the unique elements of the Nobbys service, with its beach location and the firing of cannons from the fort overhead, gave it a sense of theatre and reverence that continued attract large crowds. 

“There is something about standing here, just before dawn. It’s quiet, in that minute of silence, you can hear the surf breaking – it just resonates with people,” he said. 

“It gives you a real buzz when the sun goes up to see that sea of faces. You know that all the work you have put in for 12 months has come to fruition, and to see the young people come out is just terrific.”

Rebecca Longfield, of Cessnock, who woke at 2.30am to attend the service with her extended family, including rugged-up six-month-old baby Flynn, agreed the Nobbys ceremony offered a special Anzac Day experience. 

“To have the sound of the waves in the background, and the cannons firing, it’s very realistic. You can imagine it is just like it would have been at Gallipoli,” she said.

Also among the early starters in the crowd were Sharon and Marc Lane, of Wallsend, with children Courtney, 13, and Jordan, 20, attending their first Nobbys service. Mrs Lane’s grandfather served in the Light Horse and the family makes a point of attending a dawn service together each year.

“It’s nothing to get out of bed early one day a year to remember those who made sacrifices,” Jordan said.

Knights coach Nathan Brown, who laid a wreath on behalf of the club, was clearly moved by his first Nobbys dawn service. 

“Well, it’s a great location, for starters, and the man upstairs produced some beautiful weather for us, which made it even better,” he said. 

Brown said it was a very early start on a game day for he and the players who attended, but justified by the occasion. 

“My dad is Vietnam war vet and I know how all these wars can have effects on people, but it’s a great occasion and obviously very well supported,” he said.

Also in attendance was Commander Mark Sirios, of the HMAS Newcastle, who led a contingent of about 40 of the ship’s company. He, too, found the service very moving, and was particularly impressed by the Maori translation of the Ode of Remembrance, a feature introduced last year.

“Just being by the ocean, being a Navy member, hearing the waves go by … it’s very moving,” he said.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, who addressed the service, said Anzac Day for her evoked memories of her “pop” Ted Tillman, who served in Laos and Papua New Guinea in WWII, and her husband’s great grandfather, Arthur Reginald Nelmes, who served and died in Gallipoli.

“This Anzac centenary continues to be a time to honour the service and sacrifice of our original Anzacs and the generations of Australian servicemen and women who have defended our values and freedoms in wars, conflicts and peace operations through a century of service,” she said.

A 16-year-old boy will appear in a Sydney court later today charged with planning a terrorist attack at a Sydney Anzac Day event.

Counter terrorism police arrested the teenager in his home in Auburn, in Sydney’s west, yesterday afternoon.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the age of the suspect was concerning.

“Now, the age of the individual is of significant concern. Sixteen years of age. A boy,” NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione told reporters this morning.

Mr Scipione said the boy had been charged with one count of acts in preparation or planning a terrorist act. The offence carries a maximum penalty of life in jail.

“Police will be alleging it was linked to the Anzac commemorations today,” he said.

The arrest was the result of an investigation by Operation Vianden officers. Police believe the boy was acting alone and the threat had been “thwarted”.

It appeared he had been radicalised online, Mr Scipione said. He was known to security services.

Officers had been monitoring the boy’s online activities and were forced to act yesterday. The 16-year-old was arrested alone on a street near his Auburn home.

“We had to do that to ensure the safety of the community. Clearly we have taken that action with community safety on the eve of the sacred day, which is Anzac Day. I want to assure the community here in NSW that our counter-terrorism capability is such that we are able to move very quickly to prevent harm and on this occasion we have done that,” Mr Scipione said.

“But the threat that was being dealt with was one that caused us to move and to move yesterday. At this stage, this particular young person has been bail refused.”

The teenager’s home was searched but Mr Scipione refused to say what was found, or what sort of attack was planned.

More details would likely emerge later today, including what Anzac Day event was targeted.

Asked if it would have been a devastating attack, he said it was difficult to know. “You don’t know what you don’t know, but what we do know is there was intent clearly where we were satisfied we needed to move and we needed to move swiftly.”

Australian Federal Police Sydney commander Chris Sheehan urged people to attend Anzac Day events today.

“I want to assure the NSW community that our counter terrorism capability is such that we were able to move quickly to prevent harm,” he said.

“Anzac Day should be observed by all in our community free from fear and I would encourage everyone to enjoy this special day.”

Despite that police weren’t leaving “anything to chance” and security at Anzac events today had been upgraded and would be noticeable.

The arrest did not deter Sydneysiders from marking the special day. Thousands attended dawn services from Palm Beach to Penrith.

At the Cenotaph at Martin Place, a third generation veteran and former Royal Australian Air Force pilot officer Gary McFarlane told The Daily Telegraph there was “a striking atmosphere”.

“My father fought in WWII and my grandfather in WWI so today is very much a family tradition.”

Across the country, crowd numbers were down compared to 2015, which was marked by massive turnouts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings.

About 55,000 gathered in the chill Canberra pre-dawn at the Australian War Memorial for the national service, well down on last year’s 120,000-strong crowd.

Memorial director Brendan Nelson said Anzac Day was not about war, but about love and friendship and honouring the men and women who devote their lives to their fellow Australians.

He said it was tempting to settle for the broad brushstrokes, headlines and shallow imagery of our history.

Our comfortable lives bred easy indifference to the individual sacrifice made in our names, he said.

“102,700 Australians are named on the roll of honour. Like us each had only one life, one life to serve others and our nation. They chose us,” he said.

In Brisbane, Governor Paul de Jersey urged a 25,000-strong crowd to show sensitivity to modern-day soldiers carrying the psychological scars of service.

“We must not forget veterans whose war wounds are not readily visible,” he said.

A youth vigil, involving representatives from about a dozen groups including the Scouts, SA Surf Lifesaving and St John Ambulance, was a highlight of Adelaide’s dawn service at the city’s war memorial.

Thousands also gathered at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance and the Auckland War Memorial to pay their respects.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull attended a dawn service at North Bondi RSL club in Sydney and is heading to Canberra for the national Anzac Day ceremony.

Thousands of Tasmanians braved the cold to take part in Anzac Day dawn services around the state. The biggest crowds were at the Cenotaph in Hobart and at Kingston Beach, south of the city, as well as the Cenotaph in Launceston.

RSL Tasmania President Robert Dick said he was glad to see Anzac services so well attended.

“It goes to show how people are remembering those who served our country,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to see.” More than 90 towns in Tasmania are marking the 101st anniversary of the Gallipoli landing with dawn or mid-morning services.

Overseas, rain greeted Australians and New Zealanders as they trooped in to the Anzac commemoration site to camp out overnight for the service on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove will attend the service at Villers-Bretonneux in France.

Κατακόρυφη αύξηση των λεκτικών και σωματικών επιθέσεων σε βάρος των ανθρώπων με διαφορετικό σεξουαλικό προσανατολισμό παρατηρήθηκε το 2015, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της ετήσιας έρευνας του Δικτύου Καταγραφής Περιστατικών Ρατσιστικής Βίας.

Τα 185 από τα συνολικά 273 περιστατικά που καταγράφηκαν την περσινή χρονιά από τα μέλη του Δικτύου αφορούν περιστατικά με θύματα της LGBTQ κοινότητας (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer), τα οποία κορυφώθηκαν την περίοδο της ψήφισης του συμφώνου συμβίωσης για τα ομόφυλα ζευγάρια, με επιθέσεις τόσο σε ακτιβιστές όσο και σε απλούς πολίτες.

Οι επιθέσεις που καταγράφηκαν περιλαμβάνουν σχεδόν κάθε τύπο εγκληματικής πράξης και έντασης, από πυροβολισμούς που είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα την πρόκληση σοβαρών σωματικών βλαβών και βιασμούς με στόχο την απαξίωση του θύματος και τη «διόρθωση» των σεξουαλικών προτιμήσεών του έως λεκτικές επιθέσεις, οι οποίες είναι συνηθισμένες στην ελληνική κοινωνία.

MΕΣΑ ΣΤΗΝ ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑ

«Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά πρέπει να γίνει στα ενδοοικογενειακά περιστατικά που συνήθως λαμβάνουν χώρα με την αποκάλυψη των σεξουαλικών προτιμήσεων ή της ταυτότητας φύλου του παιδιού στους γονείς αλλά και τα ενδοσχολικά περιστατικά», αναφέρει η έκθεση.

Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι σε 26 περιστατικά το θύμα είχε ηλικία από 11 έως 18 χρονών. «Και όλα αυτά είναι μόνο η κορυφή του παγόβουνου, αφού είναι δύσκολο για τα θύματα να μιλήσουν για όσα τους έχουν συμβεί», τονίζει ο Φίλιππος Παγάνης, πρόεδρος της Colour Youth – Κοινότητας LGBTQ Νέων Αθήνας. Η πέμπτη κατά σειρά ετήσια έρευνα του Δικτύου, το οποίο δημιουργήθηκε με πρωτοβουλία της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τους Πρόσφυγες και της Εθνικής Επιτροπής για τα Δικαιώματα του Ανθρώπου, καταγράφει επίσης αύξηση των επιθέσεων σε βάρος προσφύγων και μεταναστών.

Όπως προκύπτει από τις συνεντεύξεις των θυμάτων, δεν έχει εκλείψει η δράση οργανωμένων ομάδων στις γειτονιές, ενώ συνεχίζονται οι λεκτικές επιθέσεις από μεμονωμένους πολίτες και οι διακρίσεις από εργοδότες. «Καταγράφεται η συνύπαρξη -εντός της ίδιας κοινωνίας- της αλληλεγγύης, που επιδεικνύει ένα μεγάλο τμήμα του πληθυσμού στο πλαίσιο της προσφυγικής κρίσης, με τη βίαιη συμπεριφορά ενός άλλου τμήματος του πληθυσμού», επισημαίνει η Τίνα Σταυρινάκη, βοηθός συντονίστρια του Δικτύου, η οποία επισήμανε ότι ακόμα και στα σημεία εισόδου και προσωρινής διαμονής προσφύγων καταγράφηκαν επτά περιστατικά σε βάρος νεοαφιχθέντων.

ΑΝΗΣΥΧΙΑ

Από την πλευρά του, ο γενικός γραμματέας Διαφάνειας και Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων, Κωστής Παπαϊωάννου, εξέφρασε την ανησυχία ότι «στο μέλλον θα βρούμε μπροστά μας τις καθυστερήσεις των διωκτικών και δικαστικών Αρχών σε αυτό το θέμα».

Κατά τα λοιπά, όπως και τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, σημαντικός παραμένει ο αριθμός καταγεγραμμένων περιστατικών στα οποία εμπλέκονται ένστολοι, ελαφρώς μειούμενος είναι ο αριθμός των περιστατικών με θύτες δημοσίους υπαλλήλους και θύματα άτομα της LGBTQ κοινότητας, ενώ εντοπίστηκαν και τα πρώτα περιστατικά ρατσιστικής βίας κατά ανήλικων Ρομά. Τέλος, και το 2015 υπήρξε έντονη έκφραση αντισημιτισμού, με βεβηλώσεις μνημείων από νεοναζιστικές οργανώσεις.

ΤΗΝ ΒΙΑΣΑΝ ΚΑΙ Η ΜΗΤΕΡΑ ΤΗΣ ΤΗΝ ΠΙΕΖΕ ΝΑ ΣΩΠΑΣΕΙ

Ένα περιστατικό αφορούσε «διορθωτικό βιασμό» λεσβίας από άνδρες. Το θύμα, σε άσχημη κατάσταση, επέστρεψε στο σπίτι του. Εκεί διηγήθηκε το γεγονός στη μητέρα της, η οποία χτύπησε το θύμα και της απέδωσε την ευθύνη του συμβάντος λόγω του σεξουαλικού προσανατολισμού της. Η μητέρα του θύματος ζήτησε να μη μάθει τίποτα ο πατέρας της και η γειτονιά για να μην «ντροπιαστούν». Επίσης της είπε πως θα το ξεπεράσει με τον καιρό και γι’ αυτό να «βάλει μυαλό», να «αλλάξει μυαλά», αλλιώς θα τη σκοτώσει για την ντροπή που πιθανά να περάσει η οικογένειά τους.

ΠΛΑΤΕΙΑ ΒΙΚΤΩΡΙΑΣ: ΕΒΑΛΑΝ ΦΩΤΙΑ ΣΕ ΣΚΗΝΗ ΑΛΛΟΔΑΠΟΥ

Το θύμα διέμενε σε σκηνή στην πλατεία Βικτωρίας, περίπου το τελευταίο δεκαήμερο του Δεκεμβρίου. Ομάδα Ελλήνων πήγε στην πλατεία και άρχισε να φωνάζει κατά των ανθρώπων που είχαν κατασκηνώσει στην πλατεία για να φύγουν και να αδειάσουν την περιοχή. Σύμφωνα με το θύμα, ενώ φώναζαν και έσπρωχναν τους άλλους, στοχοποίησαν και έβαλαν φωτιά στη σκηνή του. Η σκηνή έπεσε πάνω του και υπέστη εγκαύματα δευτέρου βαθμού στο δεξιό μέρος του σώματός του. Δεν έλαβε θεραπεία για τα εγκαύματα και σύμφωνα με τον γιατρό της Praksis στην Ειδομένη μολύνθηκαν, οπότε χρειάστηκε αντιβιοτικά. Το θύμα μοιάζει πολύ ευάλωτο και δυσκολεύεται να δείξει εμπιστοσύνη σε οποιονδήποτε.

Ο πρόεδρος των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, Barak Obama, και η πρώην γενική κυβερνήτης της Αυστραλίας, Quentin Bryce, έχουν ένα κοινό: Έχουν στην συλλογή τους σκαλιστά αυγά των αυστραλιανών πτηνών emu φιλοτεχνημένα από έναν Έλληνα.

Δεν είναι οι μόνοι. Πολλοί άνθρωποι και πολλές διασημότητες έχουν αυγά που σκάλισε ο συμπάροικος Σταύρος Μαργαρίτης, ο οποίος, όμως, έχει χαρακτηριστεί «μοναδικός» από τους Αυστραλούς. 

Η ζωή του “unique” man -όπως έγινε γνωστός μέσα από το βιβλίο του συγγραφέα, Kevin Hallewell, στο βιβλίο με τον τίτλο «Stavros – A Unique Man»-, όχι μόνο έχει καταγραφεί μα έχει γίνει βίντεο και τραγούδι στην Αυστραλία.

Και τι δεν έχει κάνει στη ζωή του ο Σταύρος Μαργαρίτης! Μεταξύ άλλων, υπήρξε πυγμάχος, παίκτης ράγκμπι, αλλά και φονέας καγκουρό!

Ας πάρουμε, όμως, τα πράγματα απ’ την αρχή σε μια «κατάθεση» του ίδιου στο «Νέο Κόσμο», όπου λέει:

«Έτυχε να γεννηθώ το 1937 μέσα στη φοβερή και δύσκολη εποχή του Β’ Παγκοσμίου και Εμφυλίου πολέμου, «την εποχή του ξυπόλητου τάγματος», που αν δεν καταφεύγαμε να γλυτώσουμε στα μακρινά και απάτητα μέρη στα βουνά, στα βράχια και τις σπηλιές, θα μας σκότωναν ή θα πεθαίναμε από την πείνα.

Από το 1937 που γεννήθηκα έως το 1953, πριν μεταναστεύσω στην Αυστραλία, όλα μου τα χρόνια τα πέρασα έξω στην ύπαιθρο, στη φύση και, σύμφωνα με τις συμβουλές του παππού μου, ο οποίος με έμαθε τα λίγα κολλυβογράμματα, λέγοντάς μου μυθιστορήματα και ιστορίες από τις περιπέτειες του Α’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Την εποχή του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, το 1943, είχαν καεί όλα τα σπίτια του χωριού μου από τους Ιταλούς κατακτητές. Θυμάμαι που όλοι μας τρέχαμε να γλυτώσουμε στα απάτητα μέρη των βουνών, μέσα στις σπηλιές και, ευτυχώς, επιβιώσαμε από την κτηνοτροφία. Ήμουν τυχερός που μεγάλωσα δίπλα στον σοφό παππού μου παρέα με τη φύση και μακριά από σχολεία, από την πόλη και την πολυκοσμία. Ο παππούς μου μού έμαθε τους τρόπους και τα μυστικά για το πώς να ζω μέσα στη φύση με όλες τις δυσκολίες της και τα λίγα φτωχά γράμματα. Μου διηγιόταν τις περιπέτειές του και τις ιστορίες που βίωσε στον Α’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο και αυτά όλα τα «τύπωνα» μες στο μυαλό μου.

Εγώ και ο παππούς μου το καλοκαίρι ζούσαμε στα βουνά της Βουνιχώρας και τον χειμώνα ξεχειμωνιάζαμε με τα πρόβατα κάτω στις όμορφες και γραφικές παραλίες του Γαλαξιδίου του Νομού Φωκίδας».

Ο Σταύρος Μαργαρίτης, λοιπόν, γεννημένος σε ένα ορεινό χωριουδάκι της Φωκίδας, τη Βουνιχώρα, λίγα χιλιόμετρα έξω από το Γαλαξίδι, το 1937 μετανάστευσε λόγω ανέχειας στην Αυστραλία μόλις σε ηλικία 16 χρόνων. 

Αφηγείται, πάλι, ο ίδιος:

«Δίχως, λοιπόν, σχολική μόρφωση και μακριά από την πολυκοσμία, το Δεκέμβριο του 1953 η τύχη μου με οδήγησε και βρέθηκα στην άλλη άκρη του κόσμου, την Αυστραλία, στο απόμακρο χωριό Saint George του Queensland, όπου έζησα το περισσότερο διάβα της ζωής μου, μόνος μέσα στη φύση».

Και, όντως, μετά από 30 μέρες ταξιδιού φτάνει στο Saint George μια πόλη κοντά στο Queensland όπου εκεί διέμενε ένας θείος του ιδιοκτήτης κάποιου καφέ. Ο Σταύρος δούλεψε πολύ σκληρά, έκανε πολλές και διαφορετικές δουλειές και με πολύ χαμηλό μισθό. Δούλεψε ως ξυλουργός, σερβιτόρος, διετέλεσε παίκτης του rugby αλλά και πυγμάχος. Στην τελευταία του δουλειά ως κουρέας, συνδύασε και το κυνήγι των καγκουρό, Την ημέρα ήταν ένας απλός κουρέας και τα βράδια κυνηγούσε καγκουρό. Υπήρξε τόσο επιδέξιος κυνηγός που στο ενεργητικό του μετρά πάνω από 1.000.000 καγκουρό».

Αφήνουμε πάλι τον ίδιο, με δικά του λόγια, να μας αφηγηθεί τη ζωή του στην Αυστραλία:

«Αναγκάστηκα να επιζήσω και να βγάλω το ψωμί ως κυνηγός, κυνηγώντας καγκουρό, αγριογούρουνα, κουνέλια, άγρια σκυλιά dingo. Και όλα αυτά για το δέρμα και το κρέας τους. Συνέχισα μετά με το εμπόριο πουλώντας κρέατα, δέρματα, γούνες, χρυσαφικά και ό,τι άλλο μου τύχαινε στο διάβα της ζωής μου. Γνώρισα πολλούς ανθρώπους όλων των φυλών του κόσμου ως κυνηγός και έμπορος και συνεργάστηκα με πολλούς επιχειρηματίες και εργάτες.

Με την πάροδο των ετών, κατέληξα τα τελευταία χρόνια να ασχοληθώ με το πολυαγαπημένο μου χόμπι του σκαλίσματος αυγών του πουλιού emu, που είναι σήμερα το μοναδικό άγνωστο στολίδι του κόσμου. Σήμερα διατηρώ μια Gallery (έκθεση) σκαλισμένων αυγών, στο Saint George, όπου προσέρχεται και την επισκέπτεται πολύς κόσμος απ’ όλα τα μέρη της Αυστραλίας και από όλα τα μέρη του κόσμου. Είμαι πολύ υπερήφανος γι’ αυτές τις δημιουργίες μου, οι οποίες αποτελούν το μοναδικό φαινόμενο σε όλο τον κόσμο και τα έργα μου κοσμούν πολλές συλλογές διάσημων ανθρώπων».

Ο κ. Σταύρος Μαργαρίτης είναι παντρεμένος και έχει δυο κόρες. Παρ’ όλη την επιχειρηματική του δραστηριότητα στη δεύτερη πατρίδα του, ποτέ δεν ξέχασε τη μητέρα πατρίδα, την Ελλάδα. Μόλις άρχισε να κερδίζει αρκετά χρήματα, ξεκίνησε τα ταξίδια του στην Ελλάδα. Εκεί συνειδητοποίησε πόσο του έχει λείψει τόσο η πατρίδα όσο κι η οικογένειά του. 

Μάλιστα στο χωριό του εγκατέστησε και ένα λυόμενο σπίτι από την… Αυστραλία!

ΤΑ ΕΡΓΑ ΤΟΥ

Ο κύριος Σταύρος έχει καταφέρει να εξελίξει τα αυγά του πουλιού emu, που έχει πολλά κοινά με τη στρουθοκάμηλο, σε έργα υψηλής τέχνης. 

Τα εξαιρετικά και μοναδικά έργα τέχνης του με την απίστευτη τεχνοτροπία, έχουν εκτεθεί σε φημισμένες γκαλερί σε όλο τον κόσμο. Αξίζει να επισημανθεί ότι όλοι οι τουριστικοί οδηγοί στην Αυστραλία αναφέρονται στο μουσείο ως ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα αξιοθέατα της περιοχής. 

Το βαθυπράσινο αυγό του emu έχει ύψος 15 εκατοστά και περιφέρεια 33 εκ. και μετατρέπεται από τον κυρ-Σταύρο σε έργο τέχνης με το σκάλισμα γεωμετρικών σχημάτων και παραστάσεων.

Όπως λέει, σκαλίζοντας προοδευτικά το αυγό αποκαλύπτονται 8-10 αποχρώσεις».

Το Ελληνικό Παράρτημα RSL καλεί τα μέλη του να λάβουν μέρος στην παρέλαση του Anzac Day

Το Ελληνικό Παράρτημα RSL καλεί τα μέλη του να λάβουν μέρος στην παρέλαση του Anzac Day στο κέντρο της Μελβούρνης.

Τα μέλη θα συγκεντρωθούν στο Princess Walk (δίπλα από το Federation Square, Swanston Street) στις 12 το μεσημέρι και στις 12.20 θα ξεκινήσει η παρέλαση προς το Shrine of Remembrance.

Υπενθυμίζεται ότι στις 25 του Απρίλη, γιορτάζεται η επέτειος της απόβασης των Αυστραλών και Νεοζηλανδών στρατιωτών και της μάχης που ακολούθησε, στην Καλλίπολη, το 1915. Αρχικά, ονομαζόταν Μέρα της Μνημοσύνης, αλλά επικράτησε η γενική ονομασία ANZAC, που αφορά το εκστρατευτικό σώμα της Αυστραλίας και της Ν. Ζηλανδίας…

Κάθε χρόνο με ευκαιρία αυτής της επετείου γίνεται και μια αποτίμηση για την ιστορική και γεωπολιτική σημασία της Λήμνου, τόσο σε σχέση με τους ισχυρούς δεσμούς της με την δύναμη των Αυστραλών και Νεοζηλανδών (ANZAC, ονομασία που διατηρούν μέχρι και σήμερα) όσο και σαν τοποθεσία στην οποία άφησε ανεξίτηλο ιστορικό αποτύπωμα ο Α’ Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος.

Το κοιμητήριο των εκατοντάδων Αυστραλών και Νεοζηλανδών στρατιωτών, που έχασαν τη ζωή τους τότε, ήταν πρώην στρατόπεδο εκπαίδευσης και ο χώρος όπου στεγάστηκε το 3ο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο των αυστραλιανών δυνάμεων (το κύριο κέντρο περίθαλψης των τραυματιών). Η Λήμνος θα γίνει ένας διαχρονικός χώρος όπου η ανθεκτικότητα, η πάλη, και ακόμη και η αγάπη, θα ξετυλίξουν σε μια τόσο ταραγμένη περίοδο της παγκόσμιας ιστορίας.

Πάνω από 50.000 στρατιώτες της Αυστραλίας και της Νέας Ζηλανδίας πολέμησαν κατά τη διάρκεια της εκστρατείας της Καλλίπολης (1915), μια συμμαχική εκστρατεία με στόχο να κατακτήσει την χερσόνησο της Καλλίπολης για να μπορέσουν οι συμμαχικές ναυτικές δυνάμεις να έχουν πρόσβαση στα Δαρδανέλια. Κεντρικός στόχος τους ήταν να καταλάβουν την Κωνσταντινούπολη, την πρωτεύουσα της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας που ήταν σύμμαχος της Γερμανίας.

Η εκστρατεία στην Καλλίπολη κράτησε οκτώ μήνες στη διάρκεια των οποίων τα στρατεύματα των ANZAC αντιμετώπισαν την αντίσταση των Οθωμανών. Οι συμμαχικές δυνάμεις απομακρύνθηκαν στο τέλος του 1915. Και οι δύο πλευρές υπέστησαν απώλειες και σκληρές κακουχίες, με πάνω από οκτώ χιλιάδες Αυστραλούς στρατιώτες να χάνουν τη ζωή τους και άλλους δέκα εννέα χιλιάδες τραυματίες. 

Λόγω της γεωγραφικής της θέσης, απέναντι από τις ακτές της Καλλίπολης, η Λήμνος θα χρησίμευσε ως σημείο για την αποβίβαση, την ανάπαυση, τον ανεφοδιασμό και την ιατρική περίθαλψη των χιλιάδων στρατιωτών της Αυστραλίας και της Νέας Ζηλανδίας, με τις εκατοντάδες των Αυστραλών νοσοκόμων που στάλθηκαν να παρέχουν φροντίδα στα στρατεύματα.

Η απόσταση περίπου 80 χιλιομέτρων από τις ακτές της Καλλίπολης, έκανε τη Λήμνο προνομιακή για προσγείωση, ανεφοδιασμό και ανάπαυση: όλοι οι Αυστραλοί στρατιώτες πέρασαν από τη Λήμνο, για να ασκηθούν σε εκφορτώσεις και να αναπαυθούν ή να λάβουν θεραπεία στον ιατρικό καταυλισμό που είχε στηθεί στο νησί. Το λιμάνι της Λήμνου ήταν ένα σημείο αφετηρίας για όλες τις ναυτικές και υποβρύχιες αποστολές στην Καλλίπολη.

Μόνο τον Αύγουστο και τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1915, το αυστραλιανό ιατρικό στρατόπεδο που ιδρύθηκε στη Λήμνο φιλοξένησε σχεδόν 100.000 τραυματίες στρατιώτες. Πάνω από διακόσιες Αυστραλές νοσοκόμες άσκησαν τα καθήκοντά τους στο νησί. Μία από αυτές, η Clarice Daley, παντρεύτηκε τον λοχία Ernest Lawrence στα δυτικά του στρατοπέδου του Μούδρου, τον Οκτώβριο του 1915. Το γεγονός του γάμου τους έστειλε μια αχτίδα φωτός στις χιλιάδες των στρατιωτών που είχαν χάσει τους συναδέλφους τους ή που είχαν τραυματιστεί οι ίδιοι στον πόλεμο.

Ως αποτέλεσμα του ρόλου της στην εκστρατεία της Καλλίπολης, η Λήμνος έλαβε εύσημα των επιφανών προσώπων της Αυστραλίας, όπως ο Albert Jacka και οι στρατηγοί Birdwood και Monash. Τα δύο μεγάλα νεκροταφεία της Κοινοπολιτείας βρίσκονται στη Λήμνο, στις περιοχές Μούδρου και Πορτιανού αντίστοιχα.

Η σύνδεση του νησιού με το σώμα των ANZAC έχει ως αποτέλεσμα να διατηρείται μέχρι σήμερα μια ισχυρή σχέση με την Αυστραλία.

A GRAPHIC film depicting the “horror” of the Port Arthur massacre will go ahead despite the filmmaker anticipating death threats and failing to gain support from those affected by the tragedy.

Australian producer Paul Moder said the script for Bryant — the Port Arthur Massacre was in the advanced stages with filming to start later this year.

Mr Moder said he doesn’t have the blessing of victims’ families, survivors or the Port Arthur community, but that he wouldn’t be deterred.

None of the survivors contacted by news.com.au wanted to discuss the film.

Mr Moder said the story centred around gunman Martin Bryant, who killed 35 people and wounded another 23, in a mass shooting at Port Arthur, Tasmania 20 years ago.

Mr Moder said he was haunted by the tragedy and felt it was time “to examine the event in unflinching detail, free from agenda and bias”.

The Melbourne-based filmmaker is in talks with US-based Australian Michael Rymer (Battlestar Galactica TV series, Queen of the Damned) to direct the film.

He wants to cast an actor who is “not afraid to go there on screen and portray Martin with all his ugliness, complexity and yes, his own pain”.

“This would be a challenging role for anyone to play and may not necessarily be great for their career,” Mr Moder told news.com.au.

“The film will be a drama and I will not shy away from depicting the inherent violence and madness of the tragedy in a graphic manner, to do otherwise, to glorify or sanction the violence would not do the film, nor the tragedy justice.

“I do implore those who would be traumatised by seeing a re-enactment, not to view the film if they feel it will not help their healing process.”

Next week will mark the 20th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre. But time hasn’t erased the horrific memories of the ordeal for the survivors who experienced it. Nor has it closed the holes in the hearts of those who lost loved ones.

Port Arthur massacre survivor John Fidler told news.com.au he was not previously aware of plans to make the film. He said he didn’t want to comment further because his wife Gaye was struggling after recently dredging up the past in a television interview. The couple were in the Broad Arrow cafe when Bryant opened fire. Two of their friends were killed in the massacre.

Walter Mikac, who lost his wife Nanette and two young daughters, Alannah and Madeline, in the tragedy, has long defied the killer and refused to publicly speak his name. Mr Mikac didn’t want to comment on the making of the film.

Mr Moder said he had spoken with some of the survivors and victims’ family members about making the film but had not won the majority’s support.

“I am being warned off by those sympathetic to the desire by many to bury the event in Australia’s collective memory,” he said.

“There is so much anger, frustration and distress 20 years on (and) that says clearly to me, we must look at trying to alleviate this.

“I don’t believe repressing the tragedy will accomplish this.

“I know this is not the belief of all and I will most likely get death threats, be misquoted and taken out of context and ongoing criticism, but I am not afraid.”

He said sensitivities will be taken into account when making the film.

“It is a real event, so the greatest challenge lies in depicting the horrific nature of the crime and eliciting the type of response from audiences we should feel; outrage, disgust and horror,” he said.

“I will try to protect people’s privacy, anonymity and include their viewpoint as best I can.”

According to Mr Moder, he would like the opportunity to meet with more of the victims’ families and members of the Port Arthur community.

“I want to try and reassure them that the film will not trivialise their loss or identity and I’m not afraid to take their flak and condemnation,” he said.

“I plan to visit Tasmania soon and hopefully gain their blessing.”

Mr Moder said he would ideally like to shoot the film in Port Arthur but would use another location, possibly in New South Wales or Victoria, if he didn’t gain support from the community.

“It’s still too raw,” he said.

The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority told news.com.au that permits needed to be obtained to film in the area.

The Port Arthur massacre remains the biggest mass shooting in Australia’s history.

“Like most unpleasant revisitations of traumatic historic, events …(including) Gallipoli … (Australians) don’t need to see a film like this, but they should,” Mr Moder said.

“It is only through courageous and respectful examination of traumatic events that people can reach an understanding of them and then truly be able to move on.”

Mr Moder said he was prepared for backlash over the film but that wouldn’t stop him from making it.

“We should feel angry, traumatised and confronted,” he said.

“Tasmania and by consequence, all of Australia, lost a great deal of its innocence on that day.

“I will never apologise for my decision to make this film, a filmmaker’s charge is to document life and bring understanding to the world through cinema.”

Papiss Cisse and Jack Colback boosted Newcastle United’s hopes of avoiding relegation as the Magpies fought back to draw 2-2 with Liverpool on Rafael Benitez’s latest return to Anfield.

Liverpool had entered Saturday’s Barclays Premier League match in a rich vein of form, including a 4-0 win over Everton on Wednesday, and appeared in cruise control at half time.

Daniel Sturridge scored in the second minute for his fourth goal in as many BPL matches, before Adam Lallana’s fine effort on the half hour made it 2-0.

But Benitez, who knows about comebacks having led Liverpool to UEFA Champions League glory in 2005 after being 3-0 down against AC Milan at half-time, saw Cisse’s header after the break start the revival.

The Newcastle supporters were on their feet again in the 66th minute when Colback’s drive took a huge deflection to leave Simon Mignolet stranded.

Newcastle have five points from their past three matches and are a point from safety, while Liverpool will look to regroup ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg at Villarreal after their four-match winning BPL run came to an end.

Liverpool’s preparations were hindered by the news that Mamadou Sakho would not be considered for selection while UEFA conducts an investigation into a possible doping violation. Sakho watched on as Kolo Toure took his place in one of five changes.

But there was no visible impact form his absence as Liverpool led in the second minute when Alberto Moreno’s long free-kick was chested down by Sturridge, who turned in the area and arrowed a shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

Sturridge was full of confidence and cleared the crossbar with a long-range effort.

Newcastle were second best and there was little surprise when Lallana made it 2-0, the midfielder bending a sublime 20-yard left-foot effort past Karl Darlow.

The visitors created few chances, but Cisse could have done better when he headed Andros Townsend’s cross wide of the right post.

But the Newcastle forward did better with a header shortly after the break, after Vurnon Anita’s deep right-wing cross caught Mignolet in no man’s land.

Sturridge had penalty claims for a trip from Cheick Tiote turned down and a Newcastle counter-attack led to Moussa Sissoko passing up the chance to shoot in a promising position.

Liverpool thought they had regained the two-goal cushion when Roberto Firmino tapped in after Sturridge’s header was saved, but the Brazilian was offside.

Anfield was stunned in the 66th minute when Townsend’s cross was not dealt with and the on-rushing Colback saw his low strike take a huge deflection beyond Mignolet.

Benitez threw on Aleksandar Mitrovic in search of a winner and Liverpool’s defending became more frantic.

The visitors had to remain on guard, though, and Anita made a crucial block from Philippe Coutinho’s goalbound effort to make sure the points were shared.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “No, I’m not angry. It doesn’t feel like we won a point. It feels like we have lost it. It’s not our best day.

“It was an intensive game. Newcastle had two shots and two goals. We had a few more shots and could have scored more goals but didn’t and have to take what we can get.”

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez: “I’m really pleased because of the passion and fight they showed. We changed two or three little things but we were still working hard and believed we could do it. A draw is fine for us at the moment.

“When you are bottom of the table and can still see this spirit and fight you have to be pleased. It’s a bigger step for us because we can keep believing. every game now for us is massive. I have the Geordies and the Scousers on my side.”
