Greek political opposition parties attacked Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s decision to call a referendum on creditors’ demands for a cash-for-reforms deal, saying the move risked pushing the country out of the European Union.

Socialist party PASOK, the junior partner in the previous coalition government, called for Tsipras’s resignation.

“Since Mr. Tsipras is unable to take responsible decisions, he ought to resign and let citizens vote for their future via elections,» PASOK’s leader Fofi Genimmata said in a statement.

Centrist To Potami party blasted the leftist prime minister for his decision to call a referendum, saying it would fight to keep the country in the heart of Europe.

“Alexis Tsipras and (Independent Greeks leader) Panos Kammenos decided to lead the lobby of the drachma, to take the country out of the European Union and push it over the cliff,» the party’s leader Stavros Theodorakis said in a statement.

“We will fight together for a strong Greece in the heart of Europe.”

Conservative New Democracy said the government brought the country to an impasse, isolating it from Europe, accusing Tsipras for throwing the responsibility he himself could not bear to the shoulders of the people.

“Mr. Tsipras today leads the country to a referendum with a the ultimate question being a yes or no to Europe and he proposes a rift with all our partners and an exit from the euro,» former prime minister Antonis Samaras said.

Few walked the rain-slick streets of Athens in the early hours of Saturday when Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced his shock decision to let Greeks determine their own financial fate – and perhaps Europe’s, as well.

Among the first to react were the cab drivers. They shouted the news from their taxi windows to fellow cabbies and passersby. There would be a referendum. On July 5, Greece would choose whether to accept the latest demands from their creditors – more pension cuts and tax hikes – or face a possible exit from the euro and the economic unknown.

Some headed straight for the ATM to withdraw precious euros, even as Deputy Foreign Minister Euclid Tsakalotos assured them that the banks would open on Monday. Others cheered the chance for Greece to regain control of its finances after more than five years of economic decline and fiscal cliffhangers directed by foreign bankers and politicians.

“They’re trying to kill us, they’re trying to kill us, they’re trying to kill us,” said Ianos Kalivas, eating at a kebab shop near Parliament Square. “It’s like we live in a constant state of fear.”

How Greeks will vote is unclear. More than 56 percent favored retaining the euro, compared with 35.4 percent who preferred default and an exit over a bad debt deal, according to a Mega TV poll released June 16.

That was before Greek leaders denounced euro area negotiators as blackmailers out to humiliate their country and urged people to vote “no” in the referendum. While a negative result could prompt the European Central Bank to cut its financial lifeline to the country’s banks and raise the risk of a Greek default, a “yes” vote could force Tsipras into early elections.

The political atmosphere may only grow more tense over the next eight days, especially if ATM queues become bank runs.

Greeks will be voting under “extremely difficult conditions of national division and extreme economic conditions,” said Nicholas Economides, an economics professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business. “Tsipras is gambling with the future of Greece.”

The future was far from the mind of Lapidos Kontos, a student on his way home from a friend’s birthday party. Dignity was worth more than the euro, he said, supporting a combative approach by Tsipras.

“They treat us like beggars and thieves,” Kontos said. “He should have just said ‘no’ and come back to Athens.”

Greeks have rarely decided something so big since voting in 1974 to become a republic. Nikolas Karagianakis, a pensioner who paused while kick-starting a scooter early Saturday morning to watch a live video feed on his phone, said he hoped his countrymen would consider the consequences of the referendum.

“It’s a horrible idea,” Karagianakis said. “Staying in the euro is going to be tough, but going back to the drachma will be worse. And I am worried that most people won’t know enough about the situation to vote carefully.”

In a surprise move, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced early on Saturday that his government intends to hold a referendum on whether Greece should accept the proposals put forward by lenders.

Tsipras made it clear that he is against accepting the terms offered by creditors but said that he would accept the outcome of any vote.

The prime minister said he would go to Parliament on Saturday to get approval from MPs to hold the referendum on Sunday, July 5.

“After five months of tough negotiations, our partners unfortunately resorted to a proposal-ultimatum to the Greek people,” Tsipras said. “I call on the Greek people to rule on the blackmailing ultimatum asking us to accept a strict and humiliating austerity without end and without prospect.”

The surprise development throws into turmoil planned talks Saturday among euro-area finance ministers on their latest proposal, which would unlock 15.5 billion euros and extend Greece’s program through November, in return for a commitment to pension cuts and higher taxes that Tsipras opposes.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke with European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi on Saturday, who showed “understanding and sensitivity” over a decision to hold a referendum on July 5, the government spokesman said.

Greek banks rely on emergency infusions from the European Central Bank to stay afloat and the liquidity lifeline has been reviewed frequently in recent weeks as Greek savers pulled out money on fears of capital controls.

“We are sure – which was proven also during the phone call – that Mr. Draghi has the best of intentions on the decision of the Greek government to hold a referendum,” Gabriel Sakellaridis told Greek television.

Greeece’s Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis and Deputy Foreign Minister Euclid Tsakalotos will meet Saturday with European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, a government statement said. Tsipras spoke with Draghi on the phone before announcing his decision to hold a referendum to explain the government’s view, Tsakalotos said in a phone interview.

Germany owes Greece 9 billion euros in reparations from the First World War, according to a report produced by the State General Accounting Office.

The report states that Greece was due to receive 0.4 percent of the total reparations due to be paid after the First World War.

Berlin was due to pay in 37 installments but Greece only received 1.5 percent of the total by the time the Lausanne Conference was held in the summer of 1932, when Great Britain and France decided to suspend demands for reparations payments from Germany due to the onset of the Great Depression.

However, Greece was not a signatory to the agreement so the claims still stand and are now the equivalent of 9 billion euros, the report stated.

Οτιδήποτε τοποθετούμε στις πίσω τσέπες του παντελονιού ασκεί πίεση στην άρθρωση του ισχίου και επιβαρύνει τη μέση. Αρχικά, μπορεί να συμπιεστεί το ισχιακό νεύρο, το οποίο βρίσκεται ακριβώς πίσω από την άρθρωση του ισχίου, με αποτέλεσμα τον ερεθισμό ή τη μερική φθορά του. Εμφανίζεται ακολούθως πόνος στο σημείο αυτό, πόνος που συχνά ακτινοβολεί κατά μήκος ολόκληρου του ποδιού.

Επίσης, διαταράσσεται η φυσιολογική κινητικότητα της λεκάνης κατά το περπάτημα, με αποτέλεσμα να καταπονείται περισσότερο η σπονδυλική στήλη.

Η ικανότητα του παπαγάλου να μιμείται πιστά τους ήχους που ακούει στο περιβάλλον του, μεταξύ των οποίων τις ανθρώπινες φωνές, φαίνεται πως κρύβεται στην μοναδική δομή μιας περιοχής του εγκεφάλου του, που μόλις ανακάλυψαν οι επιστήμονες, ρίχνοντας έτσι φως στο νευρωνικό μυστικό του… παπαγαλισμού.

Οι αμερικανοί και ευρωπαίοι ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής τον αναπληρωτή καθηγητή νευροβιολογίας Έριχ Τζάρβις του Πανεπιστημίου Ντιουκ της Β.Καρολίνα, που έκαναν τη σχετική δημοσίευση στο περιοδικό “PLoS One”, ανακάλυψαν ότι ορισμένα «κυκλώματα» του εγκεφάλου του παπαγάλου έγιναν διπλά εδώ και τουλάχιστον 29 εκατομμύρια χρόνια.

Η εξελικτική αυτή ιδιορρυθμία φαίνεται πως επέτρεψε στον παπαγάλο να γίνει εξπέρ στις μιμήσεις των ήχων γύρω του, καθώς η ύπαρξη δύο πανομοιότυπων περιοχών στον εγκέφαλό του, τού δίνει τη δυνατότητα να αντιγράφει τους ήχους που ακούει και να τους επεξεργάζεται στα νευρωνικά κέντρα του.

Ελάχιστα ζώα στη φύση -κυρίως πουλιά- μπορούν να μιμηθούν ήχους και φωνές όπως ο παπαγάλος. Οι επιστήμονες υποθέτουν ότι η ανάλογη μιμητική δυνατότητα στον άνθρωπο προέκυψε μέσα από μια παρεμεφερή αντιγραφή ορισμένων εγκεφαλικών κυκλωμάτων, αν και παραμένει άγνωστο πώς και γιατί αυτό συνέβη.

Σε εξέλιξη είναι αυτή την ώρα έκτακτο Κυβερνητικό Συμβούλιο στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου, υπό τον πρωθυπουργό Αλέξη Τσίπρα, για την πορεία της διαπραγμάτευσης, προκειμένου να ενημερωθούν όλα τα μέλη της Κυβέρνησης για την πορεία των διαπραγματεύσεων, εν όψει των κρίσιμων αποφάσεων που πρέπει να ληφθούν τα επόμενα 24ωρα.

«Ήρθαμε για την ενημέρωση», ήταν το μοναδικό σχόλιο του υπουργού Παραγωγικής Ανασυγκρότησης Π. Λαφαζάνη όταν ρωτήθηκε από δημοσιογράφους κατά την προσέλευσή του στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου.

«Νομίζω ότι αύριο πάμε για συμφωνία», δήλωσε ο υπουργός Υγείας Π. Κουρουμπλής ενώ ο πρωθυπουργός Αλέξης Τσίπρας και ο αντιπρόεδρος της κυβέρνησης Γιάννης Δραγασάκης προσήλθαν χωρίς να κάνουν δηλώσεις.

Οι ίδιες πηγές αποδίδουν επικοινωνιακά χαρακτηριστικά στην φράση “game is over” που απηύθυνε χθες o πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου Ντόναλντ Τουσκ στον πρωθυπουργό Αλέξη Τσίπρα. Χθες, σημειώνουν κυβερνητικές πηγές στο Eurogroup και στην Σύνοδο Κορυφής, «κατέστη σαφές ότι η Ελλάδα πρέπει να απαντήσει στο κείμενο των θεσμών εντός 24 ωρών . Η πρότασή τους, προσθέτουν, είναι ένα σκληρό μνημόνιο που προβλέπει σκληρά μέτρα, υψηλό ΦΠΑ κ.α. και υπογραμμίζουν ότι:

«Όσο βέβαια η Ελλάδα δεν υποχωρεί οι απειλές υποχωρούν και κερδίζει η λογική» , ενώ το Κυβερνητικό Συμβούλιο που ξεκινά σε λίγο την συνεδρίασή του, αναμένεται να εξετάσει την κατάσταση που έχει διαμορφωθεί και να χαράξει την τακτική των επομένων 24 ωρών που θεωρούνται ιδιαίτερα κρίσιμες για την επίτευξη ή όχι συμφωνίας.

Demands for tax increases and pension cuts that Greece’s creditors are setting as conditions for the disbursement of aid are putting the country in an impossible position, its Finance Minister said on Friday.

“I am against increasing the corporate tax, but then again I am against raising the tax on hotels and against cutting the pensions of people who live below the poverty line,” Yanis Varoufakis said on Irish national radio RTE.

“These issues are putting me and my government in an impossible position, having to make a bad choice among really hard, difficult bad choices.”

On Thursday, Greece again failed to clinch a cash-for-reforms deal with creditors, setting up a last-ditch effort on Saturday to avert a default next week or start preparing to protect the euro zone from financial turmoil.

Varoufakis said that, while Greece was determined to remain part of the eurozone, it would not sign any agreement with creditors that he considered “unviable”.

Asked whether Greece was still facing demands that he could not agree to, Varoufakis said “Absolutely, absolutely.”

“The Greek side has bent over backward to accommodate some rather strange demands by the institutions. It is now up to them to come to the party,” he said.

The austerity package being imposed on Greece would destroy its chance of growth and make it much harder for the country to repay its debts, he said.

“So when I am asked to put my signature at the bottom line of an agreement which is clearly unviable, I am not going to do this,” Varoufakis said.

Με ένα ζωντανό παράδειγμα θα δώσει την υποστήριξή του στους αστέγους της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας ο ομογενής βουλευτής Barton, Νικόλας Βαρβαρής. Σε ομιλία του στο πολιτειακό κοινοβούλιο, ανακοίνωσε ότι στις 11 Ιουλίου, ο ίδιος, η σύζυγός του και τα δυο παιδιά τους, θα κοιμηθούν στο ύπαιθρο και κάτω από τα αστέρια στο WIN Jubilee Oval, την επίσημη κατοικία του St George Illawarra Dragons.

“Επιθυμούμε να ενισχύσουμε την ευαισθητοποίηση του κόσμου στο θέμα των αστέγων και να συγκεντρώσουμε κονδύλια για το πρόβλημα της έλλειψης στέγης της νεολαίας. Για εμάς είναι εύκολο να σκεφτόμαστε πώς θα περάσει η νύχτα μας, αλλά για πολλούς συνανθρώπους μας είναι μία σκληρή πραγματικότητα και κοιμούνται έξω στο ύπαιθρο κάθε βράδυ” είπε ο κ. Βαρβαρής.

Μάλιστα, ο 41χρονος πολιτικός και ομοσπονδιακός βουλευτής των Φιλελευθέρων προχώρησε πιο πέρα λέγοντας ότι θα προσπαθήσει να αποδείξει ότι η στέγαση είναι κάτι περισσότερο από προσιτή για τους νέους ανθρώπους, μία αναφορά που, εμμέσως πλην σαφώς, καυτηριάζει τη δήλωση του ομοσπονδιακού Θησαυροφύλακα Joe Hockey, όταν δήλωσε ότι η στέγαση είναι προσιτή όταν οι νέοι βρίσκουν καλοπληρωμένες δουλειές.

Ο ομογενής βουλευτής αναγνώρισε τις άοκνες προσπάθειες του Κέντρου Κοινοτικών Υπηρεσιών του Kogarah και του Κέντρου Γειτονιάς για αυτή την πρωτοβουλία. Το κέντρο αυτό είναι ένας μη κερδοσκοπικός κοινοτικός οργανισμός που παράσχει υπηρεσίες σε επαρχιακές περιοχές εδώ και 40 χρόνια.
